“Dave and his family have strong ties to the Grubbers and we’re delighted to welcome him aboard – his experience, enthusiasm and dedication at junior and senior level will be critical as we push hard to invest in our local talent and take the club forward,’’ he said.
Finals fever in the air Local footy and netball finals are in full swing across the Bellarine Peninsula. It’s preliminary final time in the Bellarine Football Netball League, with the opening two weeks of finals held at Portarlington before moving to Newcomb for the final two weekends. All five Ocean Grove netball teams are though the final fortnight while Barwon Heads takes on Drysdale this weekend with the winner to play Torquay in the senior footy.
Bellarine Football League this season, but has a strong junior foundation with the under-14s winning the division 1 premiership this year and the under-16s making the grand final. “I’m fortunate to be stepping into a club that has waves of emerging junior talent coming through – from the Cobras program at under-14s level, through to the Grubbers’ under-16s and under-18s teams,’’ Farrell said. “I’m mindful about balancing expectations – we need to understand that success doesn’t happen overnight, but there are strong foundations in place here and I can’t wait to get stuck into the role.’’ Farrell already had a connection with Ocean Grove. By Justin Flynn Ocean Grove has appointed Dave Farrell as coach of its men’s senior football team for the next three years.

The team lost the grand final, but can hold their heads high after a magnificent showing throughout the tournament. Cori Andrews put his hand up to coach, thinking it would be a one-day gig.
Cori said he was proud of the boys, not only for the way they played, but also for the way they represented their school and town. He said it bodes well for the sport in Ocean Grove for the coming years. “Going forward our junior football program at Ocean Grove Cobras is held in good stead with the under-12s the second-best team in the state, the under-14s the premiership and the under-16s making a grand final,” he said. “The school and myself couldn’t be any more proud of the boys.” Justin Flynn
Portarlington to Docklands Ferry was funded as part of the last state Budget. The 12-month extension to the trial through to June 30, 2023 will enable a better assessment of longer-term options. Works have recently been completed at Portarlington Harbour. Improvements included an all-weather access from the foreshore to the ferry service, a strengthened pier head to enable vehicle access for the aquaculture industry and emergency response, and a new more accessible low landing for improved water access.
“I was thinking it was only going to be a one round carnival, but we won every game quite convincingly and kept three out of four teams scoreless,” he said. “We then went through to the next round and we kept three out of the four teams scoreless again. “I spoke with Lisa (Grigg), the sports coordinator, and said we might have to start taking it a bit more seriously now.”

The Portarlington to Docklands ferry service has been guaranteed by the state government for at least another year. Launched in May 2017 at its pre-Covid peak in 2019 the trial service attracted almost 110,000 users, with a peak of more than 15,000 passengers in January. Although most popular throughout the summer, the service still attracts thousands of passengers during the colder months. The extension of the trial ensures the weekday services to Melbourne will continue.

By Cr Stephanie Asher Electric vehicles (EVs) seem to be a hot topic of conversation lately. Although some people simply love an argument, it’s hard to look past the savings on fuel and running and maintenance costs, contributions to cleaner air (we all love fresh air!) and reductions in carbon emissions. These advantages reflect the aims of council’s Sustainability Framework, which we put in place in 2020, to make sure the city considers environmental, social and economic sustainability in every decision. The framework is backed by a formal action plan and other specific, targeted strategies, such as the Climate Change Response Plan. EVs play an important role in achieving our objective to lower transport emissions and the City is changing the light fleet vehicles to EV alternatives by 2027.

The team has three more EVs on the way and is preparing to order up to 10 more in 2022-23. Our charging stations are juiced up by renewable wind energy through the Victorian Energy Collaboration. You don’t have to go far to feel like you’re a whole world away. Just far enough to leave the crowds behind and find your space. A place where you can reconnect with nature, soak in the scenery and feed your soul. And okay, enjoy some great wine while you’re at it. Go further in
The toy library is made up entirely of volunteers, and opens its doors on Tuesday from 7pm to 8pm and Saturday from 10am to 11am.The library was first opened in 1980 and is now located at the Boorai Centre, 4-50 Shell Road, Ocean Grove. Members pay an annual fee to join and can borrow four toys a fortnight or up to eight toys with a family membership. “A lot of our members are really into the philosophy ‘borrow don’t buy’ – it just makes so much sense from an environmental perspective, not to mention financially,” Anita said. The committee is made up of 10 local mums who volunteer their time between parenting and day jobs, supported by members helping out for a one hour session each term.

The new building will be opened officially in April 2023 when the library has moved in.

Toy library secretary Anita Mullick accepted the funds on behalf of the committee of volunteers during an evening shift and was taken by surprise when Ben Mumberson from CommBank Ocean Grove branch arrived with a cheque.“Icouldn’t believe it, we were absolutely thrilled,” she said. “It’s perfect timing as we need to update our very popular party packs, so this money will go to buying ‘big-ticket’ party toys that will make any birthday event a success.”
Drysdale’s new library will be known as the Boronggook Drysdale Library after Geelonh council voted to approve the official naming on AugustBo-rong-gook23. is the Wadawarrung name for the immediate Drysdale locality and refers to turf, and is reflective of the history of the land. The decision by council comes after four weeks of community engagement, which saw the majority of respondents support the naming of the facility. The construction of the Boronggook Drysdale Library is being funded by council ($8.156 million) and the Victorian government ($1 million) and is scheduled to be completed in February 2023. Located at the Drysdale Town Centre at 10 Wyndham Street, the new library is proposed to house civic and social infrastructure for the community and will provide access to a library service, community spaces, outdoor spaces and an adult changing places facility.

“Libraries are such an important part of our community and provide so much more than books and technology,” Cr Mason said. “They provide a welcoming place to meet friends, learn new skills or attend classes, and I trust the Boronggook Drysdale Library will become a much-loved part of the town for many years to come.”
“We are firmly in an ‘emergency vehicles’ phase at our house at the moment, so the police and firefighter costumes and accessories have been fun,” toy library member Jo Blair said. “And construction toys are always a winner so we’ve borrowed the big dump trucks and diggers quite a few times over.” Visit oceangrovetoylibrary.org.au for more information or to join online.

A new school and a new Corio home –regional Australia is a much more alien place than bustling Sydney. ‘Mr O’Malley takes a breath and says he’s thrilled to have us attend this school; we’re the first African students St Paul’s Primary has ever had. He grins at us like it’s supposed to make us cheerful, but all I want is to disappear into thin Santinoair.’finally leaves, and the kids are broken. Teresai is alone and finds her way, essentially raising the family as a single mother. Akita steps up, parenting while she’s still a child. Santo spirals, his own path littered with landmines in his own neurodivergent mind – the rigidity of life can’t contain him and he explodes into a thousand pieces. Akita’s changing relationship with Santo is emotional. It is devastating, written with great, gentle compassion.Everyday racism in Australia plays out in ways both obvious and covert. From Akita’s discomfort as a child at a white friend’s sleepover to the presence of her white high school boyfriend guaranteeing a path out of trouble for her sister – the things white Australia takes for granted are used as delicate reminders of Throughout, privilege.Teresai’s strength is an ode to mothers, full of insight and power. Winner of the 2021 Dorothy Hewett Award for an Unpublished Manuscript, Hopeless Kingdomis a conjuring, knowing exploration of race, migration, gender and belonging. It is generous. This novel is not just read, but fallen into – to re-emerge is to live with greater knowledge of migrant experiences held inside this country.

Glenys has been walking towards Lake Connewarre early in the morning and has seen the flame robin a few times about halfway down the track, along with other tiny birds in the area. Male flame robins have a bright orange breast and throat, and white plumage on the lower belly and undertail. The top of their head and back is dark grey and there is a white stripe on the wing. The female is quite different from the male, being mostly brown with a pale wing stripe, and a white outer tail feather. Flame robins are altitudinal migrants that spend winter in lowland coastal areas, and when spring arrives they return to mountainous forests to breed. “BCH has been unable to recruit more GPs to grow the clinic in Portarlington which is necessary to provide greater service to the community and keep the clinic viable,” BCH chief executive Garry Ellis said.
By Justin Flynn Ocean Grove is mourning the loss of Jack Murphy, who gave so much to the community. Jack was a much-loved crossing supervisor at Surfside Primary School and gatekeeper for Ocean Grove Football Netball Club. Jack stood down from his 20-year role of ‘lollipop man’ in late 2020 due to ill health, receiving a flood of cards and well wishes from current and former students.

great. All the parents have been fantastic. You couldn’t ask for better people.” Jack volunteered at the footy club for two decades, collecting gate takings and selling the weekly program at Memorial Reserve. Ocean Grove Football Club football director Cam McGregor spoke at Jack’s funeral this week describing him as having an “instant and warm and caring persona”.
Bellarine Community Health (BCH) and Epichealth this week announced a new partnership to provide general practice (GP) services from its Portarlington site. The partnership sees Epichealth take over the day-to-day and financial operations of the GP clinic, while BCH will continue to run the allied health and social support services from the Fenwick Street site.
“How are we looking today, how many kids do we have playing?,” Jack would ask Mr McGregor.“(Hewas) genuinely interested in how we would perform, but making sure we did it with homegrown talent. Talent he had seen years earlier crossing the road outside Surfside Primary, but also including Star of the Sea pupils.”
Extra GP support announced for north Bellarine residents
BCH will work with Epichealth to transition the clinic operations and support patients through the process. Current clients of the GP clinic have been informed of the change of provider and existing clinic staff have been offered ongoing employment with Epichealth.

By Matt Hewson Australian musical theatre star and cabaret chanteuse Queenie van de Zandt brings her award-winning show BLUE:TheSongsofJoni Mitchellto Geelong Arts Centre next weekend. The show, which van de Zandt describes as “a love letter from one melancholy, artistic mother to another”, delves into Mitchell’s often turbulent life to take the audience on a journey to uncover the deeper meanings of the songwriter’s lyrics and music.
“I’ve been inspired by an international residency I did with Frantic Assembly in London in 2019. They’re physical theatre-based and they use group-devised processes as well, and I wanted to explore their methodology of working.”MsCarmichael said it was a special feeling to be supported by the city in which she grew up and began her creative journey.
“It’s definitely not a tribute show; Joni’s such an extraordinary artist and I wanted the show itself to emulate her incredible artistry,” van de Zandt said. “I tell stories of her life and it gives the audience a different experience because they end up really understanding the lyrics. The songs become so much more, hearing them that way.”

Project Connect will focus, as the name suggests, on connection, not just in terms of the themes and issues presented in the final product but also the processes by which Ms Carmichael and her team will create the work.
‘love letter’ to Joni Mitchell
‘Stoked’ at arts grant
The grants provide some level of financial support – $1000 in Ms Carmichael’s case – but even more importantly a considerable amount of in-kind studio access at the Arts Centre. Ms Carmichael said the studio access would be a game-changer for her new work, Project Connect, which will explore group-devised physical theatre performance. “The 38 hours studio space is the key thing, having somewhere inspiring and professional to work in,” she said. “We get access to meeting spaces and PD, which is also really exciting. For networking it’ll be fantastic, we tend to get stuck in our own circles.”
Matt Hewson Stacey Carmichael, pictured onstage with Frantic Assembly in London, has received one of Creative Engine’s second round artist grants. (Supplied)

A huge part of the inspiration for the show was van de Zandt’s experience as a mother and being aware of Mitchell’s own story as a mother.“Joni was forced to give up her daughter when she was three months old, and she said that created a life-long melancholy that never left her and made its way into every single song she created,” van de Zandt said. “I didn’t get pregnant for many years, until I was 47, and I really thought it was something I was going to miss out on. To see that, to feel the impact of that love, and thinking about having to give that up, it’s heartbreaking. “Joni said when her daughter was 30 and they were reunited, she said ‘the songwriting was just something I did waiting for you to come back’. It’s so beautiful and heartbreaking.
The Driftwood
For many creatives, the pressure to produce works that provide some kind of financial return stifles opportunities to engage in purely explorative practice. So when Geelong-based actor, dancer and choreographer Stacey Carmichael found out she had been awarded one of Geelong Arts Centre’s Creative Engine grants she was thrilled to have the opportunity to do just that. “I was really stoked to be selected,” Ms Carmichael said. “I suppose, as creatives, we always feel ‘Is my work valid? Is my work interesting to anyone?’ So being given this kind of support gives it a sense of validation, which is enormous.”
experience“SoIsupposethattopsandtailstheshow, myofalmostmissingoutonthat, and I think that’s kind of what melds our stories together.”Vande Zandt believes that the rawness of both Joni’s story and her own allows audiences to tap into their own experiences of loss and memory.“Oneof the gift’s Joni’s given to the world is to allow people to feel seen in their own pain,” she said. “One of the things I wanted to do with this show was take people and allow them to have that hour of melancholy, which is different from sadness, it’s almost nice. It’s like remembering an old love, it’s tinged with pain and sadness but it’s also lovely to have. “So I say to people at the beginning, I’m popping you all in a little boat of melancholy for the next hour, and we stay in that space. And it has to be intimate, and I allow myself to be very vulnerable with the audience, which then allows them to experience that within themselves.”
“Physical theatre is by its nature about andsetshappensoursheconnection’sconnection,andIthinkcomingoutlockdowns,abigvibe,itseemsprettyrelevant,”said.“It’sabouthowweconnecttoourselves,toworld,toothers,butalsoexploringwhatwhenyoubringallthedifferentskillofthefiveartistsinvolvedintothespace.“That’swhatthisgrantisfor,forustoexploreseeifthere’sanymeritinthisprocess.

Grand Cherokee has become grander, with increased dimensions, seven seats and boosted technology. (Pictures: Supplied)
The flagship Summit Reserve (on test) included Palermo quilted leather, 21-inch wheels, a McIntosh premium sound system, front-seat ventilation and massaging, four-zone climate control and air suspension, while a $5500 Advanced Technology Group, with head-up display, wireless phone charging, night vision camera and front interactive passenger display, was added, taking the price to more than $120 grand, before on-road costs.
A new-generation five-seat model - with the same technology and styling as the seven-seat L - will follow to Australia later this year, with the option of 4xe plug-in hybrid power.

By Derek Ogden, Marque Motoring Some would say, not before time, Jeep has brought back an extra row of seats to its Grand Cherokee large sports utility vehicle range, turning it into a full seven-seat SUV. While at it, the maker has boosted its iconic off-roader with more technology.
Styling For a vehicle so big, at more than five metres long, the Grand Cherokee L Summit is well proportioned - width more than two metres, yet height well under two metres - gives the SUV a bold yet sleek aerodynamic coupe character.Oneonlooker compared the test car looks to a Range Rover, which in this case, was a bit of a stretch, literally. Indeed, at more than 5.2 metres long, the ‘L’ is easy to find in a crowded car park, as it inevitably sticks out from the standard car space. The front consists of an upper metallic grille with Jeep’s trademark seven slots flanked by LED headlamps. Below is a full grille-width air vent incorporating LED daytime running lights. From the rear, the SUV belies its bulk with simple horizontal lines incorporating wraparound tail lights and twin alloy tipped supportalloyexhaustpipes.Sideon,21-inchpolishedpaintedwheels,astandardfitmentonSummit,asportystreetpresence.

Safety Top-shelf safety features take the Grand Cherokee L Summit to new heights. Interior The increase in the horizontal exterior allows for a boost to the wheelbase and cabin space in general, something not lost on occupants aboard the test vehicle. In a first for Jeep, the Grand Cherokee L boasts Uberesque seating for a driver and six passengers in space and comfort. All three rows are easily accessed, even the power-operated third row, with the second row tumbling well out of the way, leaving the back to weigh in with adult leg room. Carry-on bits and pieces find a home in a range of storage spaces, including a deep box in the centre console and bottle holders in the centre and doors all round. Rear passengers have the advantage of retractable blinds, just in time for summer heatwave predictions. Luggage is not left behind in the storage stakes, with 487 litres available with all three rows in use, leading up to a cavernous 2395 litres with the two sets of rear seatbacks folded flat. There’s a cabin-wide cubby under the floor where the jack is stored. Apple CarPlay wireless support means an iPhone can be connected without having to plug it into the vehicle. The system brings contacts, audio apps, Apple Maps and more on board, all through the Uconnect system. A 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster looks after sat nav, along with mechanical features such as tyre pressure monitoring and driving aids. There’s a roof-mounted rear facing ‘kid cam’ camera that will police questionable behaviour in the back two rows. It even has a zoom mode.
All models are powered by the tried-and-tested 3.6 litre Pentastar naturally aspirated V6 engine, delivering 210 kW of peak power and 344 Nm of maximum torque to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission. The flagship Summit adds a more advanced four-wheel-drive system with a low-range transfer case.
The replacement for the big five-seater, the long wheelbase L comes in three versions, beginning with the Grand Cherokee L Night Eagle, selling for $82,250, plus on-roads, then the mid-range L Limited ($87,950) and the L Summit Reserve ($115,450).

the Ponds. Grovedale rallied in the final two mixed however, with Marci Sanderson and Dave Meehan getting up 6-2, and Belinda Lee and Jason Schoenmaekers denying Mikaela her third set taking it 6-3, earning them the week off next week. With only two points separating the White and Blue Wandana Heights teams at the end of the season, the Section 3 Mixed first semi was bound to be a good one. Blue started well taking the first two mixed and the men’s, while White rallied to take the women’s.

Nicole Wright and Darryl Mohr sealed the win for Blue in the fifth set, leaving White to face Grovedale next week. Waurn Ponds are hitting their straps at the right time, pushing themselves into second last week, and taking a good win on Saturday over minor premiers Grovedale. The match was even two sets all after the doubles, but the Ponds saved the best to last taking both reverse mixed, to put them straight into the Section 3 Mixed grand final. Section 4 and 5 Mixed played their final home and away matches this week, and with all matches in Section 4 level on sets, and the ladder leaders in Section 5 having good wins, the only change to finals positions was Section 5’s Wandana Heights winning a home final by half a point to Ocean Grove.

It was semi-final week for Tennis Geelong Junior Saturday competition for the majority of sections, and almost half of the first-semi results were tied on sets and decided on games. Section 3 Girls went to Western Heights Uniting whose strong form over the season continued, with a 6-0 win over Centre Court. Wolfe said while most of her players enjoyed playing for the social side of things, the will to win the premiership was very strong. “Lots of them are mums with families, who love getting together and being able to play socially,” she said. “They all have that competitive streak to them. We want nothing more than to win.”
“A few of my players are experienced players so those weeks off are no trouble to us at all,” she said. “It’s nice to rest those older bodies.” Wolfe said it didn’t matter which side the Grubbers play in the grand final. “Either are going to be tough,” she said. “Barwon Heads goal ring have quite a strong holding goal circle. “Geelong Amateur’s centre (Jalen Walsh) won the league best and fairest and is quite a nice little player. They are strong through the middle.”

Ocean Grove pulled off a stunning extra-time win in the D Grade first semi-final on Sunday. Locked at 29 goals each, the Grubbers were faced with two five-minute stanzas against Modewarre to decide which side progressed through to this weekend’s preliminary final. Ocean Grove scored five goals to one in the first period and then four to five in the second to run out winners by three goals. They will now face Geelong Amateur in the preliminary final with the winner to meet Torquay in the season decider. Ocean Grove was soundly beaten in the qualifying final against Torquay, which coach Paula Birch said took its toll. “We were pretty disappointed,” she said. “Torquay hit us hard. They were pumped and ready. They hit the finals running.” With the season on the line at the start of extra time in the semi-final, Birch said her players were exhausted. “It was quite warm as well,” she said.
