MP race heats up By Shelby Brooks It’s time for an independent voice to represent the community at a State Government level, current Cardinia Shire councillor Brett Owen has said. After 17 years on the council, Mr Owen has decided to stand in the November election for the new seat of Pakenham. He will be running as an independent candidate. “I think it is time for an independent, I think our community will welcome that,” he said. “A lot of people have been disillusioned with party politics and negativity around that. “My time on council has always been independent thinking not influenced by others, so I’m really proud to stand up as an independent

to truly represent the needs of this electorate without interference by others.” “I love my role on council but it think I have a lot to give in other arenas,” Mr Owen said. “Over the years on council people have asked me, ‘Brett why don’t you step up to the next level, is this something that interests you?’ “And it does - I think I can bring a lot of knowledge and understanding of what people want in our community and definitely it’s something I’ve been considering for a long time.” Mr Owen will be going up against The Greens’ Michelle Maibaum, Labor’s Emma Vulin and the Liberals’ David Farrelly. The oldest property in Berwick is expected to sell for between $4m and $4.4m. The homestead at 31 Quarry Hills Drive covers 1.16 acres and features three bedrooms, three bathrooms, a four-car garage, a pool, a conservatory and views of Westernport Bay. David and Diana Nutter have looked after the home over the past 32 years, making many upgrades over the past decades. “It’s paid off in making the house more liveable - it’s up to date with the 21st-century so we hope it will be lived in comfortably,” Mr Nutter said. “We feel like custodians of the property because of its history and we’ve melded modern technology with the heritage of the old fittings.” STORY PAGE 8

A prominent horse trainer is walking a Melbourne Cup hopeful over a kilometre each day due to the shocking condition of a Nar Nar Goon road. John Leek has decided it is safest to walk Fengarada 1.3km from his home at the end of Mount Ararat North Road to the Princes Highway to load the racehorse on the float because of the potholes and damage to the rural road. “We’ve tried driving down at 2km per hour but by the time we get down the road, the horses are a mess. The danger is the horses could hurt themselves.” It comes amid an influx of pothole reports across the local area. STORY PAGE 5
