Social get-togethers return THE Ladies Gold Reef Probus Club of Stawell has been enjoying regular meetings again this year after a very topsy turvy two years prior to this. Some of the activities we have all been relishing to get back to, apart from our monthly meetings, are the monthly birthday lunches for those who wish to celebrate their birthdays. Others are always welcome at these lunches. We have an annual weekend at a camping ground out in Halls Gap which was able to go ahead this year. Members who go out there always enjoy the weekend. We have a dine-out group who meet for lunch every alternate month, for lunch, at different venues around the Stawell area. We are slowly rebuilding our club numbers after not being able to meet and induct new members over the past couple of years. Our annual Christmas in July at the Gt Western Hotel was a great function with about 29 Probus members enjoying a fantastic meal and get-together. All in all, it is really good to be able to meet socially again and catch up with everyone, even though that unwanted disease is still hanging around.
The Ladies Gold Reef Probus Club of Stawell are back celebrating social outings.

THE ANSTO Synchrotron at Clayton in Melbourne was visited by 13 members of the Probus Club of Maling. The Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) Synchrotron is a remarkable scientific facility located in a secure building 216 metres in circumference and costing $220 million in 2007. Its operation is similar to the Large Hedron Collider (CERN) in Switzerland. By increasing the speed of electrons in a circular orbit, it produces intense light, filtered and adjusted in 14 separate workstations to explore the molecular and atomic details of a wide range of materials and uses for science and medicine. Each year over 10,000 researchers from around the world are involved in this 24-hour facility. Our Melbourne Synchrotron is the second of only two in the southern hemisphere, from a total of 18 worldwide. Guided tours may be arranged through PrimeSCI at Swinburne University. Email ansto@ swin.edu.au Group tours cost about $15 per person. It’s really worth a visit!

Delightful Christmas in July CHRISTMAS in July was held at the Maroondah Probus Club – a great experience after all the lockdowns due to Covid as well as enjoying outside activities once again. Members really enjoyed this lunch at the Pig and Whistle restaurant in the Dandenong Ranges. The weather was brisk and the food was a delightful Christmas meal.

Time to make more friends! Anne Vick WELCOME EVERYONE, Well here we are once again! This year is going rather fast and by the time you read this, we will be into October, football over for another year. Hopefully we had some happy members who were lucky enough for their team to have won the Grand Final and were able to have celebrated with family and friends.
Once again, many clubs are out and about enjoying varied activities, especially those who choose to join in walking groups. With the weather on the improve, gardens are all starting to show the start of Spring with lovely flowers and bulbs all out in full bloom and colours, and beautiful cherry blossoms and fruit trees. Many clubs are, however, still finding it hard to get all their members back to full capacity after the past two years of Covid. In October we have our Golf Day at Waterford Valley Golf Course in Knoxfield which is promising to be a fabulous day with many clubs attending and great prizes
tor all winners. This event is hosted by Wantirna South Probus Club and supported by PAV. On November 28 we have our Annual General Meeting followed by the announcement of our new committee and hopefully we have lots of members considering to take over for the following year, as all positions are up for renewal. My position as President has been very rewarding for me, making new friends along the way and I would recommend any of the vacant positions worth trying. In December we have the annual cards (500 and crazy whist) Christmas Party, so
get your names in for a great day of playing cards, fun and friendship. Applications are available in the August/ September Probian and don’t forget to wear your Christmas Bling! The Probian has shown lots of clubs enjoying varied and exciting events and get aways , a few I would recommend we all try. It is always good to get new ideas from others. Keep up with sending in your travels and adventures and club activities! Yours in friendship, Anne Vick, President PAV

Celebrating Christmas in July ON a stunning winter morning, a group of intrepid travellers from Benalla Rose City Probus boarded their trusty steed (provided by Benalla Bus Lines) to venture into the high mountains to celebrate Christmas in July. Although faced with travel through thick fog, these undaunted troupers pressed on enjoying the eeriness of the fog as they observed the countryside waking up to a new day. Passing through Myrtleford, the group eventually turned off towards their final destination - The Red Stag Deer and Emu Farm and Restaurant. The travellers were greeted at their destination by a welcoming committee of feisty chickens before partaking of a hot coffee to rejuvenate their tired souls. Rejuvenated, these stalwart travellers toured the farm, meeting its wonderful deer and stags, emus and goats, etc. With snow on Mt Feathertop and
adjoining mountains, the vista from the farm on this crisp sunny winter’s day was just ‘picturebook’. A delicious hot meal was provided, accompanied by some appropriate libations and the obligatory Christmas Crackers and bad jokes that go with Christmas lunch. Daniel, the third generation owner of the establishment, gave an amusing and informative presentation to the group on the history of the Deer and Emu Farm. After evicting a baby goat from their carriage, this band of travellers remounted their trusty steed for their return to Benalla. All arrived safely and content after a wonderful day out with fun, friendship and fellowship. If anybody is interested in joining this band of intrepid travellers of the Benalla Rose City Probus please contact Linda on 0437 724 083 or go to benallarosecityprobus.com

Fellowship and fun times WHAT a lot of fun and fellowship was had at Latrobe Ladies Probus Club’s own little Commonwealth Games. The ladies tried a variety of activities including Javelin, Quoits, Egg and Spoon Races, Bean Bag Toss, Paper Plane making and flying, flag making, jigsaws and Games knowledge. Medals were presented at the conclusion to the winning team and also for the most enthusiastic athlete. If you would like to come along to our club as a guest, please call Barb Greenough on 0427 661 438. Ferry Trip from Sorrento to Queenscliff in glorious sunshine On leaving Traralgon by coach, we had magnificent weather to travel to Sorrento. When we arrived in Sorrento, we had time to have a walk along the bay and enjoy some refreshments before boarding the ferry. Once on the ferry, the group enjoyed a delicious Devonshire Tea as we travelled across smooth waters. On arrival at Queenscliff, the new terminal (which is under construction) looked amazing as it nears completion. The ladies then took the short walk to the historic township to enjoy lunch or a bit of shopping. The lift to the top of the tower at Queenscliff ensured amazing views in the sunshine. The group enjoyed this very relaxing day among friends and look forward to our next outing.

All smiles as friends reunite IT is great to be back, able to meet regularly again after the long disruptions of Covid. The first day, especially, hearing the nonstop chatter, and observing all the smiles as friendships were reunited, was very moving at Kerang Probus Club. Unfortunately, our membership has diminished, due to illness, ageing, or hesitancy to venture out again. Last year, we enjoyed a long day out, viewing some of the painted silos. This year, we drove to Bendigo to the Elvis Exhibition, where else! This was fascinating, including photos, documents and keepsakes from his early life of poverty, army life, to his life of fame. Members have also visited the Depot in Deniliquin, a delicious lunch at the Gunbower Pub, detouring home by the Gunbower Creek, stopping to check out the new all abilities playground and beach area at Cohuna. Each month, our guest speakers provide us with something to ponder, learn, or just to appreciate how lucky we are to live in Australia. A local farmer spoke to us of farming experience in Ukraine, assisting local farmers, to now being unable to contact his friends, not even knowing if they are still alive; the local Police Sergeant, who grew up in Kerang, has won a Police Medal, kept us interested explaining how he came to join the Force, and all the accessories that they are required to wear; a speaker warning us to be extra vigilant regarding all the scams, that seem so real; and,

Parktone enjoys a trip across the bay
Happy group during a stop at Donald.
ON 17 August, a hardy group of 19 members from the Parktone Probus Club boarded the Kingston Community Bus at 8.30am for our Winter Day Trip to Queenscliff. We travelled in comfort to Sorrento to catch the Searoad Ferry across Port Philip Bay from the Mornington Peninsula to the Bellarine Peninsula. With the ferry loaded up, we took off across the bay. The whole group felt blessed with a bright sunny day and calm seas. How lucky we were considering the rain on the previous days. Our visit went like clockwork with
morning coffee on board the ferry before a few visits around Queenscliff and time for a bit of shopping. A great lunch was held at the Leopold Workman’s Club in Leopold before heading for Geelong. A stop at the Geelong Botanical Gardens, a coastal drive through Geelong and a visit to the Narana Aboriginal Culture Centre, Surfcoast Highway were all included in a long but very enjoyable day before returning by road to Mordialloc. Thank you to our bus driver Ron, from Kingston Council, who went that extra mile to cover every request.

Beleura House and Gardens IN 1863, Beleura was built for successful merchant James Butchart as a very fine residence for a gentleman who spared no expense in creating a country seat on the edge of the bay away from Melbourne’s bustle. Today Beleura is classified on the State heritage register for its fine architectural features and is completely original to the time of its last owner and resident John Tallis, the musician and composer. It is exceptional to visit a house that captures the history of a family over generations through the family treasures, artworks, books and furniture built over generations. The Tallis family had a deep connection with the J C Williamson theatre company and the world of the stage in Melbourne over many decades. Many visiting performers, dancers and singers from around the world visited the Tallis family at Beleura during the 1920s. Music and performance are an ongoing feature of Beleura, and a vibrant concert program runs with some of Australia’s finest classical and jazz musicians throughout the year. Surrounding the house are three hectares of gardens. Designed as a sequence of garden rooms, they include a Japanese garden and pond, a formal rose garden, a palm garden and classical temples and a faux ruin. You can visit Beleura and learn of its story and tour the gardens and the House. We provide guided tours with Devonshire teas and light lunches. You can choose to come on a morning or spend the whole day to really experience the House. We love telling people about Beleura’s remarkable history and welcome speaker enquiries for Probus groups.

Neville Crowe’s Legacy NEVILLE Crowe played 151 games for Richmond Football Club, captaining the team from 1963 to 1966; he was a three-time best and fairest winner, All Australian, and seven-time Victorian representative. But more than anything, the former Jack Dyer Medalist, Hall of Fame member, and Richmond President just loved his football club. ‘Neville Crowe’s Legacy’ was created at Richmond to recognise Crowe’s dedication and provide a way for lifelong supporters to make an everlasting
contribution to their football club. The bequest program offers generous supporters an opportunity to leave a Gift in their Will, giving their family a chance to keep the roar alive for generations to come. Bequests are invested into an Endowment Fund, building a financially sustainable club and allowing a gift to become a legacy remaining in perpetuity. The future of Richmond Football Club is not just about on-field success but the ability to deliver Community Outreach programs. These include Leadership and

NORA Evans is nervous about getting COVID – but she’s also absolutely fascinated by the virus. She would be. The 92-year-old Wangaratta resident has her doctorate in Microbiology and has a prestigious academic career spanning years of lecturing and research, with her thesis on chronic bronchitis. “The coronavirus is very clever, it was fascinating to watch how the pandemic unfolded,” she explains. Then she laughs. “I don’t tell anyone I’m Dr Evans though. I’m scared they’ll say to me ‘won’t you just check out what’s wrong with my big toe?’” Nora smiles as she recounts her early years as one of the few women academics in the science field. “I was a career girl alright,” she says. “We were few and far between back then. I absolutely loved lecturing and had a great rapport with my students.” It was the call of the currawongs that saw her move to Wangaratta six years ago. Nora was born in country NSW, worked and lived in Tasmania for many years, and then later on moved to Melbourne to nurse her mother and spend time with her brother. She yearned to return to her country roots in the Riverina region of NSW, but settled on Wangaratta instead. Woolstore marks 150 years EXPERIENCE the history of Geelong and the Dennys Lascelles Woolstore through storytelling by those who have walked these halls and street before us. 1 August 2022 marked 150 years since the opening of the CJ Dennys & Co Woolstore, the current home of Geelong’s National Wool Museum. ‘Bluestone: 150 Years of the Dennys Lascelles Woolstore’ is an honest account of the colonisation of the Geelong region and events leading up to the opening of the woolstore. Bluestone tells the stories of those who have walked these halls and
explores the progress of Geelong and those who lived here through the ages. On 1 August 1872, the CJ Dennys & Co Woolstore opened, adorning the corner of Moorabool and Brougham Streets, Geelong. At the time of opening, the basalt bluestone woolstore was the second largest store in Victoria and by many accounts the “most elaborate”. On the day of opening, there was a banquet for 200 people on the third floor that was, of course, followed by a wool sale. When the Woolstore was opened, it was an innovation in colonial architecture,
with advanced design for lighting and ventilation. Bluestone considers the many faces of CJ Dennys. On the one hand, Dennys has been memorialised for his kindness and generosity, but on the other Dennys was a frontiersman who committed acts of frontier violence - a story that the Museum tells in its ongoing exhibition ‘On the Land: Our Story Retold’, and one that will be approached again. Bluestone also explores forgotten stories. Have you ever felt Ganley’s ghost
inside the woolstore? In 1895, Arthur Ganley was decapitated by the bale lift while working in the building. But there are other equally evocative stories, such as young female employees training for their basketball competitions on the top floor of the building. And there are stories we are still excavating, just like the tunnels that used to run under Brougham Street. ‘Bluestone: 150 Years of the Dennys Lascelles Woolstore’ is currently on display at the National Wool Museum, Geelong. Open daily 10am-3pm.

Pat’s rehabilitation journey at Sunset Views HOMESTYLE Aged Care opened the doors in March 2022 to its latest home, Sunset Views Manor, located in Melbourne’s booming outer Western suburbs in Tarneit. This adds to the Homestyle’s portfolio of 11 homes located in metropolitan Melbourne and the Geelong-Surf Coast region. Sunset Views is Homestyle’s second home to offer an award-winning rehabilitation program provided by Concentric Healthcare Services with a specially designed gym on-site. The concept has been successfully pioneered at our Rowville Manor home opened in 2020. We look forward to welcoming more Concentric fully-serviced gyms in our other homes in the following years. Concentric’s rehab packages are tailored to each individual resident to achieve outcomes such as enhanced social participation, increased strength, mobility and balance, and most importantly the program is proven

to decrease functional decline. Our Rehabilitation Centres provide leading physiotherapy and allied health solutions with expertise and first class care to each of the participating residents. At our Rowville Manor home, 84-yearold resident Pat who suffers from dementia used to sit in her room all day and knit and wouldn’t engage with anyone or anything. Pat was set in her routines and didn’t join any programs because of the sensory overload. Pat began her Rehab Program with gentle walks and exercises in her room. Slowly over time she was integrated into the group exercise program. Within two months, Pat was not only lifting 2kg weights, riding a bike and walking the treadmill, she also took up totem tennis! This rekindled her enjoyment and happy memories of playing and watching the tennis. Nowadays, Pat can be seen knitting on a swisse ball bouncing up and down! She has a new lease of life at 84, even
recently taking up Pilates. Homestyle’s philosophy of holistic care maximises independence by building on individuals’ strengths and capabilities. The rehabilitation centre at Sunset Views is also open to the public and is offered as an additional service to residents of the home with a choice of Standard and Premium wellness packages available. We aim to challenge the notion of inevitable physical decline in the elderly. To quote Homestyle CEO Tim Humphries: “We understand the importance of a person’s past, their present experience and their future hopes.” The Concentric Programs in our homes support stronger seniors, and the benefits of this are proven in our resident’s function, balance, mobility, strength and cognition, and this in turn supports their social engagement in the community. Baz is fresh at Glengowrie BASU Khanal, or Baz as he is known, joined BlueCross three months ago as Chef Manager for its residential aged care facility Glengowrie in Glenroy, after more than 15 years working in well-known restaurants. He made the shift to spend more time with his family and satisfy his long-term desire to do good for the community. “I decided it was time to use my skills and experience to help older people in our community and make a difference to their days,” Baz said. He heard about the role through former colleague and now Group Chef Manager at BlueCross, Matt Brock. Baz and Matt worked together 15 years ago at popular eatery, Fratelli Paradiso in Sydney. Baz explains that working in Aged Care kitchens is obviously different from restaurants but not surprisingly as elderly people still want to eat good food that is fresh. “They don’t want to eat frozen dinners or food from a can, they want proper fresh food that tastes great and is healthy,” he said. Baz is keen for feedback on his dishes and will take the time to discuss menu choices with residents. “I really enjoy going out into the dining room and asking residents what they like about the food and what they want to eat next,” he said. “Often the request is for my home-made pasta that I make from scratch.” Sometimes residents knock on the

Baz’ Homemade Lasagne. kitchen door and ask him for something without even looking at the menu. “If I have the ingredients, I make it; if not, I will arrange for it to be made next time. That’s what it’s all about and what I enjoy most about working in aged care, it’s personal.” Bon appetit!
Basu Khanal.
Explore glorious gardens in spring ALOWYN Gardens started in June 1997 when the first spadeful of soil was turned in a bare paddock surrounded by vineyards in the beautiful Yarra Valley, next door to the what is now known as the Yarra Valley Chocolaterie and Ice Creamery. After a two-year process of clearing, cleaning and extensive planning, the first trees were planted in the winter of 1999 and many thousands have followed since. Inspiration for the gardens has been drawn from the many gardens John has visited over the years, but two particularly - the Buchard Gardens in Canada and Het Loo in Apeldoorn, Holland, where John was born - hold
special significance. Alowyn Gardens consists of eight distinctly different areas, linked together with one of Australia’s largest Japanese wisteria arbours, flowering in spectacular fashion for two to three weeks in October each year, followed by the rose display. The total area of the gardens is about seven acres, which includes an extensive edible garden, a parterre garden, a silver birch forest, perennial border, casuarina forest, small display gardens and of course the wisteria archway. A fully-stocked extensive nursery is on site and an interesting gift shop sells local produce in season. Our cafe sells delicious coffee and a
range of scones, cakes and toasties. Alowyn Gardens is a must-see for the general garden enthusiastic who is looking for new ideas or for those visitors who wish to view a beautiful garden for just plain enjoyment. The venue is open every day from 10am to 5pm, except Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

The classic Christmas feast HERE at The Black Tie, we love Christmas and know how to create the perfect Christmas celebration! Nestled in the rolling hills of Gippsland’s Warragul, the Black Tie delights both locals and visitors. We are the most trusted name in Warragul weddings, functions, conferences and events with over 30 years of experience. Catering to large and small parties alike, our staff makes sure that every single person is well taken care of. TAKE a journey through the beautiful 19th-century Old Treasury Building. On the tour, your guide will show you details of the building you’ve never considered. Located at the top of Collins Street’s ‘Paris End’, the Old Treasury Building is one of the finest remaining examples of gold rush architecture. It was designed in the Renaissance Revival Style by 19-year-old John James Clark, and was once second only to Parliament House in its importance in the governing of Victoria. Constructed to store the gold arriving in Melbourne from the gold fields of central Victoria, this building now hosts a museum detailing the stories of Melbourne’s history. You will enter via these gold vaults, cunningly hidden from public eye, and discover the treasures and stories the building has to offer. Learn the importance of ‘Birrarung’, or the Yarra River to the area’s First People and the way colonisation transformed the waterway. Witness how the discovery of gold helped Melbourne to evolve from a tiny village in 1835 to Marvellous Melbourne by the 1880s! Exclusive to your tour is access to the Executive Council Chamber, where the Governor of Victoria has given Royal Assent to legislation for over 160 years. Delight in the period furniture, believed to have been in the building since 1862, and the Sir Francis Grant R.A. portrait of
Charles La Trobe, kindly on loan from the National Trust of Victoria. Until the end of 2023, visit ‘Lost Jobs: The Changing World of Work’ to go back in time to the telegraph, linotype and the age of the milkman! For just $10 per person (minimum eight people) this one-hour tour will showcase the best history Melbourne has to offer and bring its stories to life!
Visit the Old Treasury Building to check out the tours until the end of 2023, including ‘Lost Jobs: The Changing World of Work’.
LOVING LIFE NEVER GETS OLD With Home Care Packages or private funding arrangements, BlueCross can provide aged care services in your home so you can continue to get the most out of life and keep living your best you.

Iconic Aussie bush ingenuity THE Stick Shed (previously known as the Murtoa No 1 Grain Store) is the only remaining emergency grain store built during World War Two. This structure is an enduring testament to iconic Australian bush ingenuity and a symbol of the growth and strength of the Australian wheat industry. The method used to construct this very large storage shed demonstrates considerable initiative on the part of its unknown designers. Completed in 1942, the unique and dramatic structure of The Stick Shed has captured the imagination of everyone who has seen its serene and evocative cathedral-like interior. The Stick Shed’s ghostly unmilled tall timber poles and central aisle draw the eye upward towards the roof as light spills into the space through skylights as if through a stainedglass window. For these reasons, The Stick Shed is referred to by some as the ‘Cathedral of the Wimmera’. The Stick Shed (Murtoa No 1 Grain
The Stick Shed under construction. Store) was constructed in 1941 as a solution for grain storage during the World War II wheat glut, when exports were restricted. This monumental structure is the largest surviving in Victoria based on vernacular principles and materials, as well as being the largest timber frame structure and the only one of its type still standing in Victoria. The Murtoa ‘stick shed’ is fundamental to Victoria and Australia’s cultural identity. It is the interior that evokes the strongest response from all who visit it: “It
resembles a giant, serene cathedral of tall unmilled timber poles. From certain angles within, the wooden support poles resemble a forest of trees…” This sense of awe and wonder makes this interior space one of the most impressive in Australia. Work commenced on 25 September, 1941 and the store was ready to receive wheat in January 1942, after an incredible four months construction time. Built from 560 unmilled poles or ‘sticks’ (56 rows of 10) to support the corrugated iron roof of the shed, it was soon dubbed the ‘Stick Shed’. The shed is about 270 metres long, 60 metres wide and about 19 metres high along the ridge. The roof and walls are of corrugated iron painted ferric red, the 1.6 hectare floor is of concrete and a three metre wooden bulkhead runs along either side. The roof angle reflects ‘the natural angle of repose’ of stacked bulk grain. A second, larger shed with a capacity of about 7.5 million bushels, was constructed
at Murtoa in 1942-43 (demolished 1975). A 10-million-bushel shed was also erected at Dunnolly (demolished 1987) and third shed started but never completed in Murtoa. The Heritage Buildings Council issued an Interim Protection Order in December 1989 and it was added to the Historic Buildings Register (now the Victorian Heritage Register) in June 1990. The shed is now No. 101 on the Australian Heritage List, the highest heritage listing in the country. The shed has undergone an extensive conservation program funded by the Heritage Council of Victoria and Heritage Victoria. Located next to the GrainCorp receival facility at the Eastern entry to the town The Stick Shed is open for guided tours and occasional events, such as art shows and art installations, concerts, expos and private weddings. The Stick Shed entry tickets, souvenirs, maps and tourist brochures are available at The Stick Shed Visitor Information and Amenities Building.

Probus connections run deep GREENWAYS Retirement Village has taken pride of place in the heart of Seaford since its humble beginnings in 1976. As a pioneer of the industry, close to 500 happy residents have called Greenways ‘home’ over the years. And with such a rich history, it’s not surprising that the Probus connections run deep here - both past and present. “Five of our last seven new residents at the village belong to Probus. They now have the best of both worlds!” manager Lesley Hemingway said. It’s hard to know whether it’s the welcoming community, vibrant environment, great friendships, many activities on offer or the caring and supportive reputation of Greenways that attracts these new residents. For many, they’ve had the chance to experience village life before making the big decision. Like when Greenways hosted joint functions with Probus, including Melbourne Cup Day events and a day with operaextraordinaire John Carlo Bellotti. And the connection works both ways. It is common to see Probus excursions and
events advertised on the Greenways notice board for residents. Whether it be a trip to Lakes Entrance or a Mystery Tour (to Mount Macedon), residents are encouraged to participate. But it’s not only the active lifestyle that’s a draw card. Probus and Greenways committee member Marilyn recalls what influenced her. “I was dropping a Probus newsletter to a friend’s villa at the village. As soon as I walked in, I thought ‘this is perfect’. I knew Greenways was for me.” Probus and Greenways resident Audrey sees the personal touch of Greenways staff as something special. “I was a bit hesitant to move. But the girls (staff) made things so easy. I instantly felt at home.” So, as Greenways celebrates the many connections with Probus past and present, we hope that those connections thrive into the future! Greenways Retirement Village is at 330 Frankston-Dandenong Road, Seaford. Drop by or call 9786 8679 to make an appointment.

OUR pets are precious to us, they are friends and family who walk alongside us in good and hard times. Owners, understandably, worry what will happen to their beloved companions if they’re no longer able to care for them. Usually, a trusted family member or friend will step in, but not all of us have this option. The Lort Smith Pet Legacy Program is designed for those people. Under the program, Lort Smith Animal Hospital cares for bequeathing donors’ pets after they have passed away. Donor and supporter of Lort Smith Animal Hospital, Dr Judith Kinnear, recommends the program with a passion! She has loved and owned cats all her life. “I could probably measure my life in the cats I’ve had, I don’t think I could live without one,” she says with a hearty grin. “Back in uni I lived with a woman who was a bit of a cat lover but she didn’t have one. So, we took in a feral kitten from the university grounds, and from then on I’ve never been without one.” Dr Judith Kinnear was a senior lecturer at Melbourne State College and a graduate of Swinburne University. An impressive woman at the forefront of computer software design, Dr Kinnear taught herself coding and wrote CATLAB, a computer program on cat genetics for her students. A pioneer in her field, she has championed women in management, was
New Zealand’s first female vice-chancellor at Massey University, and deputy vicechancellor for The University of Melbourne. Now retired from academia, Judith has a beautiful and timid tortie named Poppy. “Well, her name is technically ‘Parfait’ but she’s a Poppy in this house,” says Judith. Poppy is in the Pet Legacy Program - as were the two cats before her. Judith also helped a friend who was struggling to decide whether she should get a new cat. “When her cat passed away, I asked her “Are you going to get another cat?” She’s my age and said ‘no’. I told her all about the program so she contacted Lort Smith. She told me the other day that she is so grateful to know that her cat will always be loved and cared for, whatever happens. “She loves her cat, thinks it’s the best in the world. I can assure her that it’s not as good as mine but we’ll agree to disagree!” she smiles. Judith Kinnear is a playful, brilliant, and generous woman who has dedicated her life to people, science, and animals. She is a donor to various cat-caring institutions including the Lort Smith Animal Hospital, and an advocate for their Pet Legacy Program that takes care of their donors’ beloved pets. Helen finds a hidden gem FOR Helen Bretel, having her Lladro Statue valued by an antique collector was a fun and interesting experience that she won’t forget. Helen was one of many St Thomas Community Retirement Village residents in Melbourne’s east who enjoyed their very own Antiques Roadshow event recently, thanks to a Southern Cross Care Community Foundation Internal Grant. “I’ve had this (statue) for probably 29 years and I got it from Spain. At first I was a bit nervous about it being looked at because it’s not the sort of thing everybody likes, but the chap (antique collector) was terrific,” Helen said. “In the last couple years, we’ve all had time to look at stuff in our house and you do ask yourself a lot of questions. “It was very interesting and fun for everyone and just to hear the comments and their stories of where their items came from, it was a very enjoyable day.” Lladró figurines are world-renowned examples of Spanish porcelain that are universally recognised for their unique beauty. The Internal Grants Program is the heart of the Southern Cross Care Community Foundation – turning fundraising revenue into real-world outcomes that improve the lives of people in our community.
Celebrating our seniors Helen Bretel and her Lladro Statue. Through the program, the foundation seeks to provide opportunities for creative and innovative projects to support people in our community to be better for life - free from loneliness and isolation. Residents brought one or two items that were displayed in St Thomas’ Community Centre, which were appraised by Melbourne Antique Collector, Glen Aitken. There were some very unique and interesting items on display, including artwork, silver, jewellery, pottery, ceramics, glass, and textiles. Each item was filmed up close and broadcast to the big screen as residents enjoyed how Glen talked about each item and gave it a valuation.
THERE’S a week of events and excitement for Kew Gardens Aged Care residents, as part of this year’s Seniors Festival. On Tuesday 4 October, a ferry ride from the Docklands to Portarlington and back with lunch provided is a highlight event. The ferry departs from Docklands at 9.30am and travels past Williamstown, Wyndham then onto Portarlington where residents will enjoy a light lunch. Following on the next day (Wednesday 5 October) ‘Animals on the Move’ - a Visiting Mobile Animal Farm - will delight! The farm brings 23-28 baby animals including a lamb or a goat, piglet, ducks, chooks, rabbits, guinea pigs and chicks. The residents can pat and feed the bigger animals and cuddle the rabbits, guinea pigs and chicks.
Thursday 6 October will feature a Gentlemen’s Cheese & Wine Tasting social gathering. It’s something special just for the men! The Lifestyle Department has organised a Wine Guide who will bring in a variety of red, white and fortified wines for tasting. There’s also a selection of delicious, local cheeses that will be paired with the wines on offer. The Lifestyle Department at Kew Gardens is dedicated to making sure residents enjoy life to the fullest. Living with purpose is the core value and care philosophy of the team. Purpose in life and living with a motivated attitude underpins Kew Gardens approach to residential aged care and is fundamental to the creation of a sense of belonging and ultimate wellbeing.

Blackburn birthday bash BLACKBURN South Ladies donned their red, white, and blue, as well as pearls and tiaras to get in the mood for our 33rd birthday celebration. The theme for the event was ‘A Right Royal Party’ in honour of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. The event was held before the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. During the meeting, our newest member, Ros, was inducted. She looked very stylish in her Eton boater as befitting such an occasion. We were privileged to have a visitor, Lesley, wearing her headscarf, tartan kilt and scarf. Members’ knowledge of Royal trivia was tested, and the winning team received traditional English sweets as their reward. After Lesley cut the cake, we enjoyed a lavish morning tea provided by the ladies-inwaiting, otherwise known as the committee. Members provided their own fine bone China.

Probus celebrates friendship FUN, friendship and fellowship was the order of the day for five Probus clubs from the East Gippsland area. The Probus Clubs of Lakes Entrance/ Cunningham, Paynesville, Bairnsdale Mitchell River, Orbost and Bairnsdale gathered together at the Caves Hotel, Buchan, to catch up with old friends, make new friends, and have a great time together. Orbost Probus Club invited clubs from East Gippsland to join them for a day of friendship and combined Christmas in July in the festivities. President Lorraine Joiner welcomed everybody and asked for a representative from each club to introduce their group and be prepared to entertain, for approximately two minutes, the whole gathering during the day. Orbost Probus Club began the entertainment with a rendition of “Jingle Bells” assisted by a CD and woofer supplied by members Rhonda Smith and Mavis Rayner and each member rang many small bells drowning out the not so melodious voices. This was followed over the course of dinner with jokes and stories from Mitchell River and Paynesville while Bairnsdale suggested a special game they use often at their meetings. But the top of the chart goes to Lakes Entrance/Cunningham Club for their interpretation of “Little Red Riding Hood”. They brought the house down with much laughter and a great deal of clapping of appreciation. At the end of the day, everybody stood on the hotel balcony with their banners draped over the balustrade for a group photo. It was a wonderful day with beautiful weather assuring that everybody could make the long drive home safely. We regret the loss of our Friendship and Conference Days which used to be held every year in our region and we hope to be able to start these up again. It is very difficult for regional groups to travel to Melbourne for all those events because of distance - not only here in East Gippsland but also for those clubs in the Western District, North East and Mallee. Orbost Probus Club is looking forward to ‘Melbourne Cup Day at Sarsfield’ being held by Bairnsdale Mitchell River Probus Club. Bring on Friendship Days!

The museum was founded in 1962 and contains many impressive exhibits (and in some cases, very rare planes). Restoration of the planes and the running of the museum is by many passionate volunteers, who are also working towards new buildings
The visit concluded with an enjoyable morning with lunch at the Flight Deck Bar and Grill and appreciated the linen tablecloths and napkins (a touch of class, as after all, we were dining in the Captain’s Lounge).

Plenty of buzz about bee session in Whittlesea Michael Halley TWO bees were chatting; one said “I want to cross-pollinate with you”. The other replied “you’ve bee-witched me”. At the September meeting of the Combined Probus Club of Whittlesea, Rob Kerr - secretary of the Victorian Apiarists Association Melbourne Section - gave members an insightful address about beekeeping, both from a commercial and hobby perspective. Bees are crucial for the survival of humans. They pollinate roughly 35 per cent of the world’s food crops and are essential for diverse and healthy plant life. Rob’s visit coincided with the arrival of spring, evident around the district where honey bees were active, pollinating flowers, trees, shrubs and food crops. The presentation was a series of explanatory slides that showed the life cycle of the honey bee. A truly complex yet organised community! Rob’s commentary explained clearly what each graphic contained and linked each to the past and next. The bee colony is an extremely organised, sophisticated society, made up of three categories: a single fertile queen bee, hundreds of male drone bees and thousands of sterile female worker bees. The lifespan of a honey bee depends on the type of bee it is. Drone bees (male bees hatched from unfertilised eggs) live for around four months. Sterile worker bees live for about 12 weeks during summer and five months or more during winter. However,
Rob Kerr.
Not a Martian but Rob in full beekeeper kit. the queen bee, the only fertile bee in the colony, can live for several years. The queen bee has a very important function within the colony. About a week after a new queen emerges from her cell, she goes on several flights in order to mate with as many as 20 drones. The queen bee lays between 1000 and 2000 eggs a day inside the hive. If the queen bee fertilises the egg, that egg will become female - a worker bee or a queen bee. However, if the queen bee does not fertilise the egg, it will become a male drone bee. Adult drones only serve one purpose: to mate with the queen bee! Successful maters die minutes or hours after mating with the Queen and the rest of the drone bees survive only as long as mating conditions continue. At the end of the warm weather, the remaining drones are blocked from the hive by the worker bees.
The first part of a worker’s life is spent working within the hive, while the last part is spent finding food and gathering pollen or nectar. Worker bees also gather water to use to cool the inside of the nest on hot days, and use water to dilute the honey before feeding it to the larvae. It is worker bees who are responsible for pollination. When they land on plants or flowers, they collect pollen dust all over their bodies, and then use their specially adapted legs to pack the pollen into bags on their legs. Lots of pollen on the hairs of the bees is brushed off when visiting the next flower and hopefully (from the plant’s point of view) pollinating the flower. Mr Kerr explained honey bees are as ageless as recorded history as remnant honey has been found in antiquities. Another historical issue was related. A King’s Apiarist wrote his beekeeping book and, with great awareness of the times, said that the hive was ruled by a King even though beekeepers at that time knew that there was no king, but there was a queen! The European honeybee in Australia faces many different plants such as our eucalypts that usually gives much more
nectar per flower than the original European flora. For instance, eucalyptus trees have a lot of pollen and larger flowers but European bee friendly plants usually have small flowers and small amounts of nectar. The navigational skills are to be admired! They use the sun, or light polarised by clouds, to navigate easily to 5km from the hive; even with a full load of nectar, they attain 30 kilometres an hour. The Rev. L.L. Langstroth, a Philadelphia clergyman and private school principal, discovered a way to use bee space to great advantage and designed what amounts to the modern beehive - the modular boxlike structures seen wherever bees are raised throughout much of the world. Mr Kerr brought along a beehive and showed how it all works, stating that each box had a capacity around 50 litres. The Australian honey industry is currently ultra-cautious as Varroa mite has been detected in biosecurity surveillance hives at the Port of Newcastle, NSW. The Varroa mite is best described as the biggest threat to the beekeeping industry across the world. Australia is the only country to not have Varro mite established. Queensland, South Australia and Victoria have all banned the import of any bees from NSW to avoid transfer of the Varroa mite. The initial finding at Newcastle spread to two distant locations through normal beekeeping activity. The source of the Varroa mite infestation is yet to be determined. The session ended with audience applause, and a small token of appreciation delivered by the speaker coordinator, Teresa Carlin. They were seen to share a ‘hive five’!

Lovely lunch date OH well, we are still feeling a few cold snaps but I know the sunny days are on their way. A group of the Knoxfield Ladies Probus members enjoyed a lovely lunch date on 6 September at Zest Restaurant. This is a training restaurant of the Melbourne Holmesglen TAFE situated at the Glen Waverley Campus. The menu is created and the courses prepared by the student chefs in training and served by other students who are training in hospitality service and bar work. Everyone seemed to enjoy the “set” menu and had a chatty and happy time…. with no dishes to do at the end (as that’s good training for the students too... I‘m sure?) Our meeting held on 21 September was followed by a spring/Summer collection by Carole from Postie Fashions. We all enjoyed seeing and purchasing from the new collection and there was some assorted garments from Postie Winter collection reduced for sale also…. just too tempting. Lovely colours and patterns are coming for spring and summer - can’t wait to wear them. Previously at the August meeting our guest speaker was Susan who brought along pots of jam which were made by refugees here. They have called their range “Grandmothers For Refugees” and we hope they have much success in their venture and such a good cause, too. Susan spoke about lots of things from the past years. This was very interesting and funny reminders about items of days

The club has active walking and cycling groups and a monthly dine-out group while its busiest group is the Silver Strings ukulele group. About 20 members continue to be in demand to play at community and private functions. Organiser Edith Whyath said the group was bonus for the community and while giving others pleasure, brought great enjoyment to members through their weekly practice sessions. Their repertoire now included more than 220 songs. Mrs Whyatt also organises games days, barbecues, outings and holidays with a three-night stay at Beachport in SA planned for next month. The club has about 80 members.

October meeting will be followed by Peter Milic, known as “The Honey Man”, who we all hope will have some of his bees’ best honey to sell if they (the bees) are feeling energetic, Peter says. Lots more days out coming up on our calendar, so let’s hope for sunshine days ahead to enjoy, such as our monthly brunch at Tosarios where we have a yummy meal and relax and enjoy our Probus friends, or craft days at Val’s where the ladies are turning out some lovely pieces. We are always hoping to welcome new members, so if you would enjoy our fun and friendship, please call Jo on 0414 491 091 to express your interest. We would love to meet you and include you too.

Successful combined outing WITH the increasing difficulty of filling buses for trips, the Echuca Probus Clubs, of which there are four, are starting to combine outings and it is proving very successful. Echuca/Moama Club helped fill the bus for Combined Twin Rivers’ trip to Emerald Bank in Shepparton and it was a brilliant day. The organisers had arranged for everyone on the bus, including the driver, to have raffle tickets, and this raffle was done on the way over We went first to Emerald Bank which comprises of MOVE (Museum of Vehicle Evolution), Chocolate and Apple Factory, Riverside Gardens nursery, Potwerx, Milestone Cafe, and the Antique Shop. When we arrived, we were given a couple of hours to wander around with a voucher for the museum. The first stop for the majority of us was the cafe for a cuppa. I think everyone managed to see just about everything. The men obviously spent more time in the museum and I guess a lot of the ladies had a good look around the nursery. The Antique Shop was just about full to the rafters with memorabilia. Also in the car museum is a huge room devoted to Loel Thompson’s collection of clothes through the ages. You would have to wonder how those pioneering mothers kept their clothes clean and tidy! It was then back on the bus to the Peppermill Restaurant for lunch. A big hand to the event’s organiser of the Twin Rivers Club; she took all our lunch orders on the bus and rang them through so when we got to the restaurant everything was ready for us. Then, 2pm saw us back on the bus with a stop at SAM (Shepparton Art Museum) on the way home. This is a fairly new project in a massive new building and very interesting. When everyone had their fill of art, it was then “Home James” to Echuca. It was a very enjoyable day.
A enjoyable trip was enjoyed by members of the Combined Twin Rivers and Echuca/ Moama Districts.

‘Great’ trip along the coast FOR the first trip following Covid restrictions being lifted, a sunny and dry morning began, with 50 Probus Club of St Leonards members and friends travelling on the Gull coach trip, to our first stop, Torquay, to enjoy a delicious morning tea of homemade slices, cheese and biscuits. The visit to the world-renowned Australian National Surfing Museum, proved why it is widely cited as hosting the largest surfing and beach culture museum in the world. It is said to be one of “the most significant centres of world surfing heritage” by the international surfing community, who have been and continue to be constant visitors. The Great Ocean Road trip was, once again, an exciting venture to undertake, with the new housing developments being noted as we travelled down the coastline. A biting wind met us at the Lorne Heritage Centre (for our second stop) as we alighted from the coach, where we were joined by Pete, a member of the Lorne Historical Society. He was easy to listen to and gave us some extraordinary information about the Great Ocean Road, some of which was as follows. Construction on the road began on September 19, 1919, built by approximately 3000 returned servicemen, as a war memorial for fellow servicemen, who had been killed in World War One. An advance survey team progressed through dense wilderness at approximately 3km a month. Construction was done by hand using some explosives, pick and shovel, wheelbarrows and some small machinery, and was at times perilous, with one worker killed on the job. The final sections along steep coastal mountains were the most difficult to work on. Anecdotal evidence from ABC archives in 1982 suggested workers would rest

detonators on their knees during travel, as it was the softest ride for them. (This information obtained from Wikipedia!) We all agreed that part of this road should be named ANZAC Highway to remember the efforts of these courageous servicemen! Aireys Inlet (for our third stop) provided us with a pre-order of delicious seafood and a drink which was appreciated by all. Arriving home at 4.15pm was achieved and a great day appreciated.
A happy lunch group.

Big things are happening CONSTRUCTION is well underway on exciting new upgrades to Palm Lake Resort Willow Lodge’s community facilities on the back of a record surge in enquiry from over-50s looking for the security and support that lifestyle resorts like this one offers. Among the resort upgrades currently under construction are improvements to the community hall which will see the installation of a plush 60-seat movie cinema, an exclusive Milon gymnasium system, a heated indoor swimming pool, spa and other new activity rooms. Palm Lake Group managing director Scott Elliott said Palm Lake Resort Willow Lodge was his family’s first foray into over50s community lifestyle resorts, purchased back in 1977. “With 44 years of history in developing and operating over-50s communities, it’s important to our family company to continue to spend money on updating our resorts’ community facilities,” Scott says. “In a nutshell, these upgrades reflect directly on re-sale prices for our homeowners. Our residents also take great pride in their communities and we want to encourage that and make them feel proud to host their visiting friends and family members in their respective resort grounds.” “We are definitely in the business of building impressive homes for modern over-50s but, more so, we are in the
Palm Lake Resort Willow Lodge. business of building great communities. A big part of this comes with providing on-site social and sporting facilities that allow our homeowners to come together and enjoy each other’s company. “It’s important to note that we are always striving to improve and be better, to keep ourselves ahead of our competitors, but our main focus is on constantly completing facility upgrades and improvement projects to keep our property values and investment potential up,” he said.

Probus Day and Seniors Week promotion ideas THE Combined Probus Club of Syndal Committee decided to get behind the Probus Day Celebrations and investigate options available to get the best results for improving club exposure and membership. As we are all are aware, Covid outbreaks and Eastern States lockdowns have had a serious effect on Probus Club participation amongst retirees. Our members have remained loyal and true to the cause, but participation is down. Fortunately, the City of Monash October Seniors Festival, celebrated in our own meeting hall, gave us the best recruiting opportunities. Our Publicity Officer contacted PSP’s Membership Service and support officer Abigail Walker who quickly arranged for 250 free personalised flyers to be ordered and delivered to the club for circulation. This will enable a local letterbox drop on Probus day.
Budget just over $100. Half price Father’s Day posters 4 x 16 x 20 at $22 each; two $12 cork boards; four $3 laminating Officeworks. These were the main expenses. This table was showcased at our September meeting to make our members aware of the club’s efforts to promote their club and to join in the promotion. President Geoff suggested that before the end of the meeting that as many members as possible could take two flyers and invite a neighbour or friend to our next meeting in October, the remaining flyers to be circulated at the festival. This received a positive response, as our next meeting is a special Melbourne Cup themed event. It is hoped that this event will encourage more active retirees to become involved in Probus Clubs, as it also gives us an opportunity to welcome new members to our club. Our thanks to PSP for their assistance.

Dedicated, experienced team MEET Rebecca Buttner, who started her journey with Regis as a student in 2015. Beginning as a Personal Care Assistant, Rebecca worked her way through multiple positions, including roles within the Lifestyle and Housekeeping teams, before transitioning into management positions. Her broad experience throughout multiple departments led to her career progression to becoming the General Manager of Regis Sandringham in March this year. Rebecca’s introduction into the sector all started because she was “seeking something different” to what she was used to. Having predominately worked in an environmental laboratory as an admin assistant and working part-time in a family business after her third child, Rebecca decided to look for full-time work and chose an aged care course at Care Training Institute. Her career with Regis then began as she completed her placement at Regis Cranbourne. Now working as the General Manager of Regis Sandringham, Rebecca feels lucky to “have some amazing people around me who make up this fantastic team”. The team plays a huge role in making Rebecca’s work all the more enjoyable and rewarding, as everyone is “impressive to be around and learn from on a daily basis”. “They are dedicated and experienced, who only ever have your best interests at heart,” shares Rebecca. Rebecca has found working with the
Rebecca Buttner. elderly extremely rewarding because “you learn something new every day, listening to stories and what some have been through or experiences they have had, which is truly remarkable”. “I absolutely love coming to work each
day... just to be able to put a smile on residents’ faces is an amazing feeling,” says Rebecca. She also expresses that she likes that her work supports families when their loved one is transitioning into aged care, which
is not easy, but “being able to assist in alleviating some of the concerns they may have is a very rewarding part of my job”. For anyone considering a career in the sector, Rebecca strongly believes “you will love it!” “I had no idea what aged care was like when I decided to do a course in my spare time. I am thrilled that I have chosen this as my career. The satisfaction of knowing what you can do for someone, that you are genuinely making a difference and the support around you is amazing at Regis, which truly makes it a wonderful place to work.” When Rebecca isn’t at work, she loves spending her time with her family. She enjoys watching her son’s football games as well as spending quality time with her daughter. Rebecca has also recently become a grandmother, so she adores time with her granddaughter who is only a few weeks old. Home to Rebecca means having a “place where you belong, are comfortable, secure and safe”. Regis offers a diverse range of care options including residential aged care, home care, retirement living, day therapy and day respite. Regis is one of the largest providers of aged care in Australia and cares for more than 7000 residents each year. A festive celebration THE Combined Probus Club of Belmont Central held a Christmas in July Luncheon on 27 July at the Waurn Ponds Hotel, Geelong. Thirty-four members enjoyed a traditional Christmas meal along with all the trimmings. The tables were beautifully set with Christmas decorations and flowers, and background music was played throughout the lunch.
As well as a door prize, quite a number of members also received a lucky ticket prize. There was a lot excitement when Santa appeared all the way from the North Pole, adding extra cheer to the occasion. The club had a full-page photo feature of the function in the local newspaper which the club hoped would help promote Probus in the local community.
A man who disappeared shortly before Santa arrived brought some cheer.
The Mountain Ash named Eucalypt of the year Renee Wood PROBUS Club members in and around the Yarra Ranges are encouraged to go for an adventure and find the Mountain Ash - one of the principal forest trees in the area. Eucalyptus regnans, also known as the Mountain Ash, was recently dubbed the Eucalypt of the Year for 2022 following a national poll by Eucalypt Australia. The competition has been running for five years and the votes quadrupled from last year. Eucalypt Australia Linda Baird said it’s unique in Australia and internationally. “It’s the tallest flowering tree or plant of any description in the world, we actually hold that, that is our native tree,” Ms Baird said. One of the tallest Eucalyptus regnans in the Black Spur stands at 86 metres tall and the tallest known is in Tasmania at 100.5 metres. “The interesting thing is that the tallest isn’t necessarily the oldest – they gain girth.” “So they grow up really tall and 36 The Victorian Probian Monday, 10 October, 2022

They also face growing issues when fire events sweep through their habitat. “They are obligate seeders – when the regnans get fire on fire on fire it’s really difficult for them because their seeds will only be viable once they become mature
and they take around 20 years to become mature. “If you’re getting back to back fire events, that gets really really difficult.“ The poll aims to engage with the public to promote the diversity of Eucalypts, with 988 species, and to grow a greater understanding of what’s in your urban environment. A hotly contested second place went to the Red Flowering Gum, Corymbia ficifolia and the Sydney Red Gum, Angophora costata, came in third. Ms Baird said the poll delivered a healthy competition on social media as those in the West rallied to back the Red Flowering Gum, with a sense of pride growing among voters about what’s in their backyard. For those wishing to see a Mountain Ash, they can be spotted in many areas across the Yarra Ranges including in the Upper Yarra and the Dandenong Ranges. The Ada Tree is also a popular Victorian mountain ash in Powelltown, which stands at around 76 metres tall and is estimated to be over 300 years old. Walking tracks to see the giant Eucalyptus can be accessed by the Ada Tree Picnic Area and car park on Ada River Road, Powelltown.

Pictures: Pamela Duthie
Quiet beauty of Port Phillip Pamela Duthie ON Wednesday, 17 August, the Combined Probus Club of Belmont enjoyed a Queenscliff ferry trip. By 9.10am at Belmont, the number sailing was down to 13 - intrepid and rugged up! They made their way down to the temporary Ferry Terminal in Wharf Street by car. Will it be windy and rough like the last time? Taking shape right beside where the ferry berths is a magnificent new ferry terminal. Drivers allocated for the day parked their cars in the free 12-hour parking area right out the front. The terminal is planned on being finished by Christmas. The group waited inside the heated, temporary terminal waiting rooms made from containers. One could make purchases of eats and drinks whilst waiting and read or chat. Before long, the MV Queenscliff could be seen. It wasn’t long before everyone was on board and queueing for the ferry’s Senior’s Special for the winter months! The quiet beauty of Melbourne’s Port Phillip Bay was experienced on the 40-minute bay crossing to Sorrento and
back amid very comfortable cafe style tables and chairs indoors. Passenger numbers were low so people could move around easily. Finally, the Mornington Peninsula with its magnificent Port Phillip beaches and seaside village of Sorrento came into view. The ferry docked at Sorrento Pier letting off and collecting a few new passengers. During the docking, Kevin spotted a seagull nestled on its nest amid the ropes on one of the concrete pylons. There was plenty of fresh sea air for those who ventured outdoors whilst the more timid used the indoor viewing decks or large windows. No dolphins were spotted during the voyage. Different to the last time this cruise was attempted, it turned out to be a lovely winter’s day with very little movement on the sea. These ferries have been purposebuilt to operate on Port Phillip Bay and therefore are unaffected by rough weather conditions. At worst, a slight rolling motion will be experienced in very rough weather. On the return to Queenscliff around 1pm, they drove to The Rolling Pin Bakery in Hesse Street for a light lunch together, and to celebrate Pam Duthie’s birthday together. - Trip organiser Helen Barry

The Lort Smith-Lyle Hospital.
History of the hospital LORT Smith Animal Hospital is a name that most Melbournians will recognise, but not many people know the fascinating history that lies behind this iconic North Melbourne site. The organisation is named after Louisa Eleanor Lort Smith (nee Montgomery). Born in 1875, Louisa was the daughter of an Irish soldier settler and grew up on a cattle farm called ‘Childhood Heart’ near Sale in Gippsland, Victoria. One 12 children, young Louisa was sensitive to animal welfare and this shaped a lifelong dedication to the prevention of cruelty to all animals. Marriage to the respected Toorak solicitor Charles Lort Smith in 1925 didn’t dampen Louisa’s fierce belief in animal rights and in 1927, she and other advocates formed the Animal Welfare League of Victoria. A true visionary and well ahead of her time, Louisa recognised the need for an animal hospital open to all creatures, whatever their carer’s circumstances. The indefatigable Louisa convinced her friend Lady Frances Lyle, a passionate animal lover herself, to donate £5000 to the project.
The Lort Smith-Lyle Hospital for Sick and Injured Animals opened in Villiers Street North Melbourne in April 1936 and 86 years on is still serving the community from this central location.
Louisa Lort Smith.
Lady Francis Lyle.
Last year, over 20,000 animals were cared for by Lort Smith’s staff and volunteers and thanks to their generous donors, $1.8 million was given in discounts to customers doing it tough. This clear demand has led to a state-ofthe-art redevelopment of the Villiers Street hospital (due to open mid-2023) and the building of a brand-new clinic and adoption hub in Campbellfield that opened in December 2021. A journalist wrote in 1938 that “No one has ever been able to resist Lady Lyle and Louisa Lort Smith” and that’s as true today as it was then. Eighty-four years on, the mission of these formidable women and their progressive ideas about the common good of animals and the people who care for them are as powerful as ever. The original Lort Smith vision of a world where everyone can share the love of an animal is definitely alive and well in the 21st century.

Surprise trip to ‘The Paddock’ Pamela Duthie EXCITEDLY, 27 of the 29 members from the Combined Probus Club of Belmont rolled up on Monday 12 September at the designated spot beneath blue skies and sunshine to see who they were travelling with and to receive their first travel instructions! Then the cars set off, bedecked with the Australian Flag in honour of Queen Elizabeth’s passing. After around 15 minutes everyone arrived at their first destination - ‘The Hub’ Encompass, 21 Apollo Place, Whittington. They were met by Kerry who gave a very informative talk on Encompass and all their many varied activities. They were taken for a tour of the cluster of shops before ending up in the cafe for morning tea where they were provided with platefuls of varied slices! On behalf of the club, Keerie Brown thanked Kerry and also presented her with a small donation to Encompass to continue their wonderful work. ‘The Hub’ is a small collection of shops, an amazing hidden gem, amid parkland. An Op Shop that supports and provides opportunities for people with disabilities. A Furniture Store with pre-loved furniture waiting for some needy person to claim. A cafe where the group were able to purchase a cuppa and something to eat. A craft shop where volunteers and participants turned preloved materials into something useful to sell or give away. An Op Shop sold at affordable prices, pre-loved clothing and footwear, linen, toys, books, DVDs, and other items too numerous to mention. Apollo Place is a training ground for local youth wishing to undertake a work placement in retail. It also offers volunteering opportunities. Following a quick look through the collection of shops or a wander around the parkland it was time for the group to collect the second set of Travel Instructions! And what instructions!! Luckily the last two expected on this trip made it after gaining their Footy Final Tickets via the internet! By 11.40pm, all eight carloads were off travelling out Bellarine Highway towards Leopold, turning right at Melaluka Road and right again at Ohalloran Road. Observant ones spotted the sculptured birds on the left hand side’s landscaped roadside. Before long they had all arrived at their final destination - ‘The Paddock’ at No. 21. What a surprise for the group - well, all except John! Chris Evans, Encompass Community Services ‘The Paddock’, met the group out at the front telling all about its garden, and its problems with rabbits and the work The Paddock does. Rain threatened! Whilst it was fine they were taken out the back to the large well maintained plant nursery where they learnt more about the vegetables they grow for sale to restaurants and other work done there. Quite a number made purchases of native plants and learned how to care for them too. Then it was into the large main building to await the freshly baked pizzas they’d ordered beforehand. Much friendship was shared around the tables as they either watched the making of the pizzas, ordered their drink or talked about their purchases. Before leaving, president Marie thanked Chris Evans and Kim, who was in charge of the pizza making, also Fran who helped in the nursery. The Paddock is Encompass Community Services 7-acre farm that provides a unique setting and offers, in their own words,

I’m told it’s a leader in social and therapeutic horticulture; promoting a ‘paddock to plate’ lifestyle, implementing sustainable living practices in daily life. Produce at the farm is grown spray-free using organic principles and sustainable food production practices. The Paddock grows and supplies seedlings to local farmers, as well as supplying seasonal produce to local restaurants. It has a nursery that provides commercial propagation to several farms in the region, apart from being an accessible and inclusive space for skills development and community skill-sharing. Their nursery is regularly open to the public but not on weekends! You may like to help Encompass continue their wonderful work by donating unwanted furniture (they will come and collect) and bric-a-brac, clothes etc or help them by making donations to this year’s Christmas Appeal. The group was so impressed by their work and commitment they decided to help Encompass in the Christmas Appeal 2022 by helping advertise its campaign (see below). They also bought a number of pot plants for a thank you gift for the club’s next trip. Help Us Help Others - Encompass Christmas Appeal 2022 This year, Encompass are asking for muchneeded donations of non-perishable food items and/or gifts for their 2022 Christmas Appeal. In 2021 they assisted 157 children thanks to the much-needed help of the community. Encompass have already seen an increase in the need for assistance this year so they ask for your help to make this happen. If you wish to help, why not give them a ring on 5248 0498.
