$56M for Racecourse Road: Libs Liberal candidate for Pakenham David Farrelly has announced $56 million would be spent on duplicating Racecourse Road in Pakenham, if the Liberal Party is elected this November. Busy roads in town such as Racecourse Road have struggled to keep up with Pakenham’s growing population, he said. Cars on the road are only set to increase as the area’s newest suburb Pakenham East will have 2700 new homes and 22,000 more people living in the area permanently, he added. STORY PAGE 5

Funding will also be used to build a new infant, child and youth mental health and wellbeing centre. Mental health professionals in the region support the council’s call for better mental health services. “One of the issues Cardinia has is the geographical location challenge of being further away from mainstream services that cover the region,” EACH south-east area manager Nicholas Teo said. “We know people tend to travel to services that are closer to where they are so it’s not just the services, the big challenge is the workforce shortages. “We know regional areas have more difficulty than metro areas in attracting qualified staff. Even if you did have the funds to deliver the services, you still have the challenge of recruiting staff.” STORY PAGE 3

Cardinia Council is calling for continued support and funding for the local community, including better access to mental health services to support the growing area. “While council plays an important role in coordinating local public health planning, we require a collective approach and investment from other levels of government to improve the liveability, health, and wellbeing of all Cardinia residents,” Cardinia Mayor Jeff Springfield said. “We’d welcome continued support and funding commitments for projects that give our community more opportunities to seek and receive support when and where they need it.” The funding for better mental health access would be used to develop a new adult and older adult mental health centre that can provide outreach to remote townships.
