Labor vows college boost
Piece by piece
Pakenham Secondary College would receive $11.3m to go towards upgrade works if Labor wins the November state election. The $11.3m promise was made on Tuesday 25 October by Pakenham Labor candidate Emma Vulin, Bass MP Jordan Crugnale and Education Minister Natalie Hutchins. The money would go towards a major upgrade to Block A. STORY PAGE 3
Hundreds of thousands of colourful Lego bricks built into various wonderful creations were on display at the Cardinia Cultural Centre over the weekend. Pakenham’s Stephen Reynolds created a Dr Strangethemed streetscape, which took out third prize. “I have a Peter Pan complex - the child in me never grew up,” he said. STORY PAGE 17
Fire concern Firefighters could face delays getting to the Officer brigade when Station Street is blocked off at the train line. Officer CFA captain Robert McCandless said currently, the brigade has easy access north, south, east and west to attend emergencies in Officer and the surrounding areas. The State Government’s plan to permanently block Station Street would mean no direct line south for the brigade. “I think it’s going to impact the community’s needs and definitely impact our capabilities to respond in a timely manner,” Mr McCandless said. Huge hospital oath By Shelby Brooks The Coalition will scrap Labor’s Pakenham Community Hospital project in favour of a $500m second campus of Casey Hospital to address the health care crisis in the South East, if they win this month’s state election.
In June last year, the State Government identified 67-69 Main Street Pakenham as the preferred site for the Pakenham Community Hospital, stating it would provide a range of integrated community health and specialist services. But Mr Guy said Labor’s plan wasn’t ad-
equate for the growing area. “It’s not a real hospital, you can’t stay overnight,” he said. “They will build you a GP clinic, we’ll build you a hospital.” Mr Guy said Pakenham needed its own hospital due to the massive growth in the area.
If they win the election, the Coalition’s hospital plan for Pakenham will include an urgent care centre with a dedicated children’s treatment area, 150 beds and maternity services. They will also look for an alternative site to the old Woolworths building on John Street. STORY PAGE 3
