The Astrological Year Ahead INSIDE

Road revamp Authorities are working to upgrade three major thoroughfares - Racecourse Road, McGregor Road and the Princes Freeway - as part of the Pakenham Roads Upgrade project. The project will be delivered in three stages, with upgrades to the Princes Freeway the first to get underway. Early works for Stage 1 to upgrade the freeway started in November, with pothole restoration works scheduled to start in early January. In January, 300 tonnes of asphalt will be spread to repair potholes within the project areas on sections of both the Princes Freeway, Racecourse Road, and Healesville-Kooweerup Road as part of the scope of the project. $15k in fines The Fair Work Ombudsman has secured $15,717.60 in penalties in court against the former operators of a burger outlet in Pakenham. The Federal Circuit and Family Court imposed a $13,320 penalty against Benny842 Pty Ltd, which operated a restaurant in Pakenham trading as ‘Burger Boss’ until it ceased trading, and a $2397.60 penalty against former company director Shane Dharmatilake. The penalties were imposed in response to Benny842 Pty Ltd failing to comply with a compliance notice requiring it to back-pay entitlements to a food and beverage attendant, then aged 20, it employed between June and October 2020. Mr Dharmatilake was involved in the contravention.

Drowning tragedy Tributes are continuing to flow for a 17-yearold Pakenham boy who drowned on Boxing Day. Nick Maan was found unresponsive in the water near Mordialloc after an extensive air search but could not be revived. Speaking with Nine News, Nick’s father Maan Maan described him as a “kind person”

and a “hard-working son”. His uncle Peter Arou said Nick was a quiet, kind-hearted young man who had a lot of friends. In an interview with the ABC, Pakenham Lions Junior Football Club president Salv Mileto remembered Nick as a young man who was well respected amongst his peers.

“He always had this beautiful grin on his face and he just had a full zest for life,” Mr Mileto said. “He was well loved by his teammates and virtually everyone in the community and the surrounding areas.” His teammates from the Pakenham Lions Football Club paid tribute to Nick by organis-

ing a get together in honour of his life. “It was overwhelming. I’ve never seen so many flowers and arrangements because what we did, we congregated on our senior oval in a circle and there were over 200 people there,” Mr Mileto said. STORY PAGE 3
