MPs call for urgent talks Locals have called on Cardinia Shire Council to reconsider plans for the Upper Beaconsfield Recreation Reserve. Last week, South Eastern Region MP Michael Galea and Pakenham MP Emma Vulin sent a letter to the council’s CEO Carol Jeffs. In the letter, the MPs stated the council’s latest draft proposal was inadequate for the community. They also requested an urgent meeting which is expected to be held on Wednesday, 29 March. It follows claims by residents that the council backflipped on its original proposal to redo the facilities at the reserve. STORY PAGE 5
Plans unveiled New designs for level crossing removal works at Station Street in Beaconsfield have been revealed, confirming the old railway house and Bunya-Bunya pine out the front will be retained. For many months it had been a concern of local residents that the State Government would go ahead with removing something they considered heritage. The road bridge will only have an effect on the rear extension of the house, while all else will be preserved. The house will still have to be claimed by the State Government because it will be within the construction zone. STORY PAGE 7

And since the 2021 Census, the housing “crisis” had worsened into a “catastrophe”. On any given night, Wayss has about 35 families, including 80 children, in crisis accommodation in hotels. “The capacity for us to assist is diminishing,” Ms McPhail said. STORY PAGE 3

Cardinia’s homelessness rates have increased by about 50 per cent in five years, according to the latest Census data. When the Census was taken last year, 337 people were experiencing homelessness.
That’s up from 220 in 2016. About half of the people currently experiencing homelessness (177) in Cardinia were crammed in “severely crowded” homes that required a staggering four or more extra bedrooms. There was also the introduction of boarding houses in Cardinia during the last five years.
