president’s message
Anne joins PAV committee The President Thérèse (Tess) Robinson HELLO everyone and welcome to another edition of the Probian. We are currently working with the publishers to bring you a page dedicated to Club news and information. Hopefully this will be on page 2 of the Probian, so you’ll always know where to look for the latest news. All being well, we will be ready to debut our new, dedicated page in the next edition. I chaired my first Delegates’ Meeting as President in February and, for those of you who attended, I’m sure you will agree the morning was filled with great information and a lot of laughs. Our very own committee member and webmaster, Ernie Brigham, who represents East Malvern Combined Probus Club, gave a presentation on how they took their club from 25 to 90 members and a waiting list of 16. Everyone was glued to the screen and the room was silent whilst Ernie spoke. It was a great presentation and Ernie has since been asked to deliver his presentation to at least 30 clubs. Well done Ernie and thanks for imparting your knowledge for members to take back to their clubs. During the Delegates’ Meeting, I asked for nominations from the floor for another
committee member. Luckily for us, Anne Oughtibridge OAM put her hand up and has agreed to join the PAV Committee. Anne is a past PAV committee member, having served from 2009 and made VP in November 2013. Sadly, her husband died in the December and therefore she resigned. Anne is a Probus Ambassador and comes to us with a wealth of knowledge and years of experience setting up many Probus Clubs. She has worked tirelessly in the development and betterment of Probus Clubs in Victoria and was awarded the OAM in the New Year’s Honours List of 2016. Anne represents Ringwood East Ladies Probus Club Inc., is a member of Croydon Park Probus Club, and is a Life Member of Ringwood Clocktower Probus Club Inc. and Maroondah Probus Club Inc. Anne, along with Robert Renshaw, District 9810 Probus Chair, was instrumental in forming the Melbourne East Probus Group (MEPG) in June 2021, after the passing of Ken Faulkner. Ken formed the Manningham Probus Interest Group (MPIG), which Anne renamed the Melbourne East Probus Group, in order to cover a wider area. The club delegates receive the latest information on speakers, tours and other events to pass on to their clubs. The group is receiving accolades after every meeting. Those who attended the Delegates’

Meeting in February and those clubs who have kept us up-to-date with their email addresses, will have met our new secretary, Fran McLean or have received correspondence from her via email. Fran also comes to us with a wealth of knowledge, having been involved with Rotary and Probus for many years. Fran represents Ringwood Clocktower Probus Club. Rennus Crossley is still doing a great job on committee, having been Acting Secretary whilst we secured a permanent replacement. Since the Delegates’ Meeting, one of our members is stepping down due to family commitments, so we are now looking for one more member to join our committee. So, if you would like to become involved and are comfortable using email and Word and like a challenge, please think about putting your name forward to join us. We work hard at our committee meetings but have a great, light-hearted lunch afterwards. To apply, please email the secretary, Fran McLean at secretary@probusvic. com.au Whilst on the subject of Club Secretaries, please consider having a dedicated club email address for your secretaries, which can be passed on to future members holding that position. That way, there is continuity and no correspondence will be missed when

IN February, the Somerville Combined Probus Club had a lovely night out at the Himalayan Indian and Nepalese Restaurant in Hastings. The food was superb and the staff very courteous and welcoming and are willing to accommodate any special dietary requests. The restaurant was big enough to cater to a large number of people and we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to any club wishing to have an enjoyable meal with friends.
IN line with the Objects of Probus, we honour a very special member of the Ladies Probus Club of Horsham East, Erene Vivian. Erene was one of 32 Foundation Members when the club formed in 1992. Erene was awarded Life Membership due to her valuable involvement. Erene has contributed in so many ways to the wellbeing of the club, and always with a friendly smile and support to others. Erene has diligently been the Club’s Publicity Officer, regularly reporting to the local press on the activities of the club and sending contributions to the Probian. Erene formed a great relationship with the local press, and handled the majority of publicity in general. Erene’s health deteriorated as she struggled with Parkinson’s Disease. Because of her declining health, Erene decided she needed more stimulation by undertaking a personal project of researching and producing a booklet. Erene felt that the club’s 30th year in 2022 was like no other, never before had there been so much upheaval in all aspects of our lives, with Covid on a wordwide scale. Changes, impacts, never before rules and restrictions, that will have implications for years to come. In saying that, while we have experienced events, all enforcing and confining us to limits in all areas. Within our own Probus Club, a walking group was formed, a group email was

Certainly, our 30th Year will be remembered as one like no other. Erene took it upon herself to create a small 30th birthday celebratory booklet, containing member contributions, historical photographs and a brief history of the Ladies Probus Club of Horsham East. Perhaps we can all learn from Erene’s motto: Life is like a camera... Just focus on what’s important and capture the good times... Develop from the negatives and if things don’t work out... State Library through the years COVER STORY A DOZEN members of Melbourne Bearbrass Probus have marvelled at the hidden, secret side of Melbourne’s famous State Library. It’s one of the world’s oldest (from 1856) and still busiest libraries, with its design echoing the Library of Congress and the British Museum Reading Room. The official guided tours “below decks” are rare events From the library’s initial collection of 3800 books, it now has that many books about bridge card playing alone. The total is three million books and items grow at 20,000 a year. If laid end to end the books would stretch 96km. Lots of rooms underground were stashed with odd furniture awaiting repair, as if for a garage sale. But there were also 40-metre rows of card index boxes - Dewey was more valued for his card indexing systems than for his cataloguing. For example, the library via card indexing quickly gave us a sample list of Victorian murders 1949-75, with name of person murdered, where the body was found, date found, who was charged with the murder, when they were charged, and sentencing. We even milled around in an “elephant lift” in working order from the 1920s - the “elephants” referring to “Double Elephant” folios of plant and animal drawings. We discovered one wall of the lift could be slid back for loading biggies. The library’s most famous “Double Elephant” is a John Audubon folio “Birds of America”, from a set of 100 folios (38in by 26in) with each of the 435 birds life-size, hand-coloured and “in action”. A copy on the world market is now worth at least $US16m. The library got its copy from a private-school
owner in Geelong who was going broke, and the library’s founder (and also “Hanging Judge”) Redmond Barry beat him down from 200 pounds to 100 pounds for it. Asked if the library had suffered any thefts, our guide Norman thought a moment and said, “Yes, in 1991 someone stole
one of Australia’s largest gold nuggets that was on exhibition here, the 8kg Pride of Australia. It had been recently found at Wedderburn in 1981. It was worth $250,000 when the smash and grab people made off with it, and I doubt anyone will ever see it again.” If you have it, please return it to the library’s ’lost property’ office.
Our members were thrilled with the tour and are already plotting more Bearbrass trips to this intriguing and beautiful building. Bearbrass joining inquiries: bearbrassprobus.org or bearbrassprobus@gmail.com

Club brimming with activities ONCE again a wonderful year at Mitchell River Probus - a year full of fellowship, friendship and fun. Many informative and stimulating speakers amazed members with the incredible local talents and Victoria wide places of interest. Our speakers and activities increased our knowledge of the wonderful places to visit within our region. As can be seen from some examples listed it has been a year full of involvement and learning.
An April visit to Orbost to see the impressive Australian Wood Design Exhibition and other points of interest. Rainforests in East Gippsland was the topic of an informative presentation by a Trust for Nature member. Such amazing flora and fauna diversity in our own ‘backyard’. The club’s 30th birthday celebrations in May marked this important milestone. Also in May some members lunched at ‘The Willow’ Buchan followed by a “street walk”. This followed our very interesting
history of Buchan presentation by Rhonda Coates at our May meeting earlier. Examples of the talented businesses in Bairnsdale have been:
· The tasty variety at the Bairnsdale Bakery business
· Lynda Priest’s original unique garments · Samantha Abbott’s fascinating handcrafted glass creations In August members travelled to Sale to step back in time at the ‘Museum of Timeless Memories’.
In November we once again explored our own region with a presentation and a later tour of Raymond Island to view the koalas and be informed of the wonderful work of KoRI members caring for the environment and injured and sick koalas. Our year of shared delightful lunches and dinners culminated with December Christmas festivities at Redcourt Homestead at Lindenow. The club meets at Club Eastwood on the third Wednesday each month and invite new members.

Nostalgic love letter to the city 3AM early morning coffee in Degraves Street to set the mood for the day. East Malvern Combined Probus is out and about again, this time to check out what is left of the Flinders Street Station ballroom as well as to see the exciting exhibition by Rone. After coffee we queued in Flinders Street to wait our turn before entering this magnificent building - which unfortunately has not been maintained in the style that would truly show its best features. Once inside we rode the lift - a modern day addition - to the third floor where we were greeted by the Rone exhibition friendly staff. We were directed to view several smaller rooms before finishing at the ballroom. Each room had a story to
tell and Rone’s expertise was on display in every corner. The windows in the corridor were covered by old newspapers. Many of these referenced the late queen and her travels. The advertisements has many people reliving the past and the difference in pricing of items. When our allocated time was up we crossed the road to Young and Jacksons to enjoy the special lunch menu. This outing is the start of what looks like a promising year of events for our club. East Malvern Combined Probus club meets on the first Wednesday of the month at the Uniting Church in Serrell Street, East Malvern. Enquiries - mobile 0488 419 314.

‘Beach party’ to remember OVER 45 Syndal Combined Probus Club members joined in the fun of a happy night out. We went back to when we were young swingers at beach parties and dressed for the occasion, (no I don’t mean bikinis and budgie smugglers!). The girls in a nice sun frock, sandals and their best sun bonnet. While the guys hunted through their wardrobes for a loud Hawaiian shirt to wear. The stage was set by B1&B2 and their wives. We know we always get a great fish dinner with a glass of wine from the Beluga Bay family restaurant at Burwood One. As the group entered, colourful leis were given to all members. Then the beachcomber music began featuring the
Beach Boys, Elvis, Bobby Darrin, etc. Maldives beach posters were attached to the walls to increase the beach mood. Samantha, the manager added her touch of beach regalia, beach towels, boogie boards etc. The night was full of fun, fellowship and friends with excellent service, fresh fish and plenty of salads. As we all know, Covid hit restaurants badly over the past two years, obviously restaurateurs crave your company and will go to extreme lengths to satisfy your needs. This beach event cost very little to put on and can be replicated in many ways to increase members participation. Thank you, Beluga Bay Restaurant, owners and staff, for allowing us to have a great meal and an interesting night out.

Tunnelling into transport matters THE Combined Probus Club of Syndal had a rewarding visit to the Metro Tunnel Information Centre recently. The centre is located at 125-133 Swanston Street, Melbourne. Our Outings Officer booked for 26 members to attend and was warmly greeted by Metro staff who offered a guided tour of the displays, giving an in-depth explanation to what we
were viewing. We were encouraged to ask if we found difficulty in their responses. The wealth of information we gleaned from this tour made us understand more fully the complexities of building, and awareness of using, modern technology, to enhance the future usage of public transportation. It certainly made you want to
investigate further as Metro have a marvellous web site that adds daily news clips and videos to the promotional video we viewed at the centre. Our Syndal Combined Probus group booking gave us the best outcome for the club and would suggest interested clubs should do the same. A day in the city followed. Our city of Melbourne has so much to offer, enjoy.

Fresh faces Margaret Luxford THE 22nd annual general meeting of the Probus Club of Casey Combined was held on Tuesday 21 March at the City of Casey Old Cheese Factory. There were 59 members in attendance to welcome the new management committee for the year as well as presenting certificates to those who had given extra service throughout the year. After the meeting a picnic lunch was served consisting of freshly made sandwiches, petite cakes and fresh fruit.
A great way to end off a meeting and enjoy the surrounds of the Old Cheese Factory! The club meets on the second Tuesday of each month at the Old Cheese Factory at 9.45am. After the meeting and interesting speakers, members can join the group who are attending the after meeting lunch at one of the many lovely eating places around the area. New members will be most welcome. Call secretary Magda on 0406 468 285 if you would like more information. Margaret Luxford is a member of the Probus Club of Casey Combined.
OPPORTUNITY shops are the heart and soul of every community. When did you last look into your cupboards, your wardrobes or your toolshed and see ‘stuff’ that you know you will never, ever, use again and had forgotten you even had. We all have done it. Or do you have the job of cleaning up an estate? How to get rid of it, that’s the problem. The answer: take it to your nearest op shop! Is it in good enough condition, you ask yourself; would I be ashamed to give it to a friend? If you would, then don’t give it to an op shop either. Op shops accept clothes, nicknacks, books, CDs ,DVDs, records, kitchenware, whitegoods, tools and anything saleable (some take furniture and heavy whitegoods but best to enquire first). Taking items to an opshop is a winwin situation for everyone. The donor gets rid of unwanted items, frees up space and feels good about it going to charity. The customer buys something they want but may not be able to afford to buy new.
Clyde Woods is the president of the Moorleigh Club. The op shop benefits by raising money for a good cause while volunteers, who staff op shops, feel good for serving the community. So everyone benefits. Without you, there would be no op shops, so please support them. They are in urgent need of new stock. Help yourself by helping others. There is a great op shop run by the Salvation Army at 401 High Street, Ashburton. I know, because that’s where I work. See you there.

In her capacity, she performs a diverse range of duties that span from delivering essential care to interacting with the residents in meaningful conversation. She attentively listens to their anecdotes and life experiences, and extends to them the compassion and attention they require. Successful sand sculpture trip Leonie Taylor HELLO everyone from Knoxfield Ladies Probus Club. As the months go by, I must tell you about some fun bus trips we have had and are looking forward to in the coming months. Firstly our bus trip took us to see the Sand Sculptures at Boneo Park. They were pretty amazing and very well done as the details were incredible. It was the Dinosaurs’ show and being a nice sunny day we were all able to wander and enjoy all the sights. The bus then took us to the Rosebud RSL where we enjoyed a very nice lunch and then to “top off” our day out we wandered through the Rosebud Mall and looked at all the shops. Good fun day. Next bus trip was a joint day with Boronia Ladies Probus Club. Morning tea at Tooradin and then the bus took us on to Inverloch where we lunched at The Inverloch Esplanade Hotel. We all enjoy our joint club outings and enjoy new company and friendships as well as sharing the costs. Members are all invited to Tosarias Restaurant again and remember it’s ’self pay’ and drive. I can taste the smashed avocado, and it’s always delicious. A most important date is our AGM where the committee is chosen and the president and vice-president also. Hopefully some members will apply for a committee position as new members

Picnic, top citizens and more THE Probus Club of White Hills commenced 2023 with the annual January picnic in White Hills Botanical Gardens, where about 30 members and visitors enjoyed a pleasant get-together and morning tea. As the January meeting was so close to Australia Day it was decided to celebrate the occasion with an Aussie theme, complete with our own ‘Citizen of the Year’ as decided by a selection panel; Australiana quiz and catered lunch at the clubrooms. The inaugural ‘Citizen’ was awarded to Joy Roy; a lady of much knowledge and so many talents. A very worthy winner! Star of the Month for January was a joint award, presented to Barry and Jenny Rainsford, and in February to Merle Boyd, all of whom make a considerable contribution to the Probus Club of White Hills. Barry is the organiser of a group known as Pot Pourri which meets monthly to play board games, knit, crochet, join in the monthly quiz or simply enjoy a good chat and morning tea. Jenny Rainsford’s contribution is media and she is responsible for promoting our club through radio and local newspapers. Merle Boyd is the friendly face who welcomes visitors on meeting days, also assists with hospitality and the Hillyhoppers caravan and camping group. These three very busy people make a big difference in the life of the White Hills Probus Club. Two new members have been inducted since the start of 2023: Pat Todd and Lynette Patterson were warmly welcomed by the members. These two ladies already have a White Hills connection as Pat Todd is the sister of secretary Maree Walker, and Lynette Patterson a friend of Merle Boyd. There have been several enquiries lately
The members from White Hills and other Probus Clubs who travelled to Rochester. from prospective members who are always welcome to come and enjoy the friendship, fellowship and fun before making the commitment to join our ranks. In February, several members of the Probus Club of White Hills committee of management travelled to Rochester to attend the Rochester Probus Club meeting to offer a show of support to the Rochester locals who have been devastated by recent flooding. In early March, capably planned and led by Wendy Betts and the White Hills tours and outings group, a coach full of members from White Hills and several other clubs in Bendigo travelled to Rochester to spend the whole day in
around the town. Morning tea, afternoon tea, lunch, the Sports Museum, op-shops, the local nursery and other businesses welcomed the visitors who spent a wonderful day out. The Probus Club of White Hills continues to provide friendly company, a diverse program and various activities which are designed to make life as interesting as possible for the retirees of the local White Hills community. All are welcome for a fantastic ride which symbolises the Probus’ ethos of fun, fellowship, friendship and a little frivolity. Visitors always welcome at White Hills Sports Complex, 10am on the fourth Tuesday of the month.
Visitors to Rochester enjoyed some time at Rochester Nursery.

Palm Lake Resort Willow Lodge.
Brand new abode for over-50s WE are so lucky, here at Palm Lake Resort Willow Lodge, to be able to offer our newest homeowners their choice of an established home or a brand-new abode. But Vicky and Clare Obren are even luckier again. When Vicky and Clare Obren moved from Paynesville to Palm Lake Resort Willow Lodge, they moved into their dream over-50s home - a brand new abode that was modified, decorated and finished to
their exact requirements. Vicky says she and Clare were referred to Willow Lodge by Vicky’s brother who has been a homeowner at Palm Lake Resort Waterford for 11 years. When the Obrens arrived at Willow Lodge for a tour, they were able to choose their preferred block of land and then, days later, were excited to receive the plans allocated to that block.
“We sat down with Matt, the Site Supervisor, and also (Caretakers) Jan and Brendan and talked about all our ideas for the house, it was really great,” Vicky explains. While the pair had their own ideas, Vicky says Matt’s building expertise meant that he was able to suggest some additional ideas and modifications that suited the pair perfectly. “We’ve extended the back deck and
added a bath to the main bathroom,” Vicky explains. “We were also able to remove the door from the ensuite shower to make it a walkin shower, which is a lot better for me.” Vicky says the whole buy-off-the-plan experience at Willow Lodge has been “absolutely magnificent” for her and Clare - and the purchasing experience has matched the welcome they’ve already received from our community.

The Heir and the Spare BEV Moss - a Public Speaker, Animal Activist and Community Advocate, who is a regular presenter at Probus Clubs sought out the Combined Probus Club of Whittlesea to give her the podium and add to her club collection. She provided a prepared prelude under the banner Buckingham Palace in my Underwear! So it came to pass that Ms Moss was the presenter at Whittlesea’s February meeting. She explained that the banner was an attention grabber and that the correct subject was My Decade of Adventure. She also edited the summary of the meeting: ‘Bev headed up a team of international social workers who were caring for the influx of unaccompanied minors coming from Eastern Europe and Africa. However, Bev’s focus was to entertain us about how she spent her time in Dublin as an older woman when she was not at work. She was determined to make the most of her 12 month contract and wanted to immerse herself in the Irish culture. What better way to do this than have Irish Dancing lessons (Ceili) on Thursdays after work. She also joined the Irish Australia Society which opened up more social opportunities for her - the most significant being an invitation to lunch with the famous
Bev Moss and incoming President Keith Miller. and much loved Irish author Maeve Binchy. Maeve was a loquacious lunch guest who loved to entertain with her stories while the rest of the guests at the table enjoyed the wine. Determined not to waste time Bev
managed to be invited to a Royal Garden Party at Holyrood Palace House where she joined in with the 8000 guests in this wonderful setting with fabulous food and Scottish music. This Garden Party attracted much coverage in the English tabloids

because the Prince of Wales was hosting it and his special guests were his son William at his first official function and Camilla about whom there was much speculation as to a future marital relationship. Bev and a fellow guest, Marion, went over and spoke to Camilla after spotting her coming from the back of the house with a small group of minders. They had a short conversation with her before being surrounded by reporters who wanted to know what they discussed. These were some of the social highlights of a wonderful year. Returning home she remained unsettled and found herself returning to Europe where she worked again in Social Care and also worked at Buckingham Palace in the summer taking visitors on tours of Clarence House, the home of the late Queen Mother. This was a rewarding and educational experience that has stayed with her ever since.’ So the oft used term to describe the ascension to the throne was valid on the day Bev Moss was in company of [then] Prince Charles the heir and Prince William the then spare. Much of the static beauty and adornments of the Royal Palaces that Bev Moss visited were intertwined in the visual slides that she used to reinforce her proficient and sometimes humorous address. In March the club’s Annual General Meeting will be held and the day is dedicated to members to address issues and elect a new committee. April and May presenters are already confirmed and will be advertised after the AGM.

Pruning and propagating Michael Halley MEMBERS of the Combined Probus Club of Whittlesea under the leadership of Marie Mack each month join with the Whittlesea Community Garden (WCG) to visit citizen’s gardens. These visits are planned for the first Wednesday of the month, and generally occur after the Probus meeting on the first Monday. But in March the garden visit came first and 20 allied gardeners learnt about propagating and pruning which seemed appropriate as the same actions were to happen at the club’s annual general meeting. Keith and Bev ‘BJ’ Sutton are the driving force behind the WGC and each month find a blooming good garden for their members to visit. This couple are true examples of how volunteering brings results and satisfaction. The garden visit was to Doreen where an associate of some members welcomed the visitors to a unique landside garden. In 2015 there were many new subdivisions appearing in Doreen. Council was struggling to keep up with all the new areas that needed attention once the sub dividers handed over to them. One was the area which borders on Ivanhoe Grammar Mernda Campus and became Twist Walk. A resident has an illness which cannot tolerate chemicals, approached council
2023 president Keith Miller being appointed. to ensure no weeds were being sprayed along Twist Walk. After much discussion, permission was given to weed and care for the area along with other interested permanent residents who loosely formed Twist Walk Residents Group! As the clay area was not conducive to most of the sub-divider’s plants, over 80 natives were obtained mostly by donation and planted within this area. Many hours of bucket watering during the drought years kept the young new natives growing. Council has also helped by supplying
compost/chip bark for the area every three years. Over the past eight years, many plants have lived and died. The garden has attracted birds, bees and butterfly that mingle with indigenous wildlife. The dog and wildlife water bowl is available beside the path along with bird baths higher up! Due to the 12 beautiful old gum trees along the fence line, water is the biggest issue. The residents have provided three soaker hoses to help. But many of the plants still struggle to meet their full potential!
However, as the years go by, they are adapting and growing with the extra water supplied and as the different seasons change. Visitors enjoy promenading down Twist Walk breathing in the fresh air and enjoying the scent of the native gums, and other plants. The Whittlesea visitors were awestruck to see what had been achieved. The nomenclature of the different plants - both botanical and everyday - was a popular topic.

Bairnsdale continuing to thrive THE Probus Club of Bairnsdale has finished a very successful year. Under the leadership of club president Neville Evans, the club enjoyed many memorable outings. With Covid restrictions behind us, we were able to resume our normal activities for the year. Visits to businesses of interest were obviously severely restricted but the club managed to maintain the Probus motto of Friendship, Fellowship and Fun. Attendances at meetings and activities were excellent - a true indication that our members appreciate the fellowship that the club provides. The club inducted nine new members during the year and as an activity to celebrate Probus Day, we had a promotional stall at the local market which attracted a lot of interest. Guest speakers at the meetings included talks from a local author, the application and use of a defibrillator, Trust for Nature, Landcare, gold in Victoria, Fish Care and the Metung Hot Pools development to name a few. Our guest speaker co-ordinator, Kay Nelson, has many and varied contacts in the community and never fails to produce a very interesting speaker. Many members say that our guest speakers are one of the reasons they enjoy Probus so much. We try to have interesting visits and entertainment days each month. The club never fails to have an outing each month, even if it just a luncheon in a local eating house, which often happens

The club also spent eight days touring the silo art in Victoria as well as visiting many other historical buildings and galleries.

Our Christmas lunch is always the highlight of the year. Members enjoy the hospitality of the Central Hotel in Lakes Entrance and the friendship, fellowship and fun are ever present at this activity. It is always a surprise to see what form the table decorations and gifts take every year. At this year’s lunch the club bestowed life membership on Peter and June Owen in appreciation of the work they have done to help make the club a vibrant and active club. With the new Probus year upon us, we welcome new president Dawn Wallace who after only two years in the club has taken on that role. Dawn is quoted as saying that, “Probus has given me more than I expected”. The group heading into the Basilica.
Visiting one of Geelong’s icons A GROUP of interested members from the Combined Probus Club of Belmont Central discovered the interesting history of St Mary of the Angels Basilica when they took a tour of the Basilica on Wednesday 27 February. They learnt that on 27 November, 1842, a small wooden chapel was erected in Yarra Street, thanks to donations from the Catholic congregation of Geelong. This small structure was one of Geelong’s first churches. Over the next few years, Geelong’s population grew significantly and the wooden building became too small. In 1843, a permanent church with the name St Mary of the Angels was proposed and plans were initiated for a building, 200 feet long, 130 feet wide which was estimated to cost 40,000 pounds. In 1854, the foundation stone of the new St Mary of the Angels Church was laid, however, because of significant delays it wasn’t until 1872 that the new St Mary of the Angels was dedicated. It seated over 1000 people. Work on the church completion was begun in 1931 and completed in 1937. A number of repairs and renovations were commenced in 1969 costing $95,000 and over the years several repairs were carried out and a restoration appeal was launched. Today, it still remains one of Geelong’s icons. The tour of the Basilica was preceded by a lunch at the Lord of the Isles Tavern, Geelong.
Something to smile about.

Ballarat’s beautiful begonias WITH much anticipation of the delights of the Ballarat begonia display, some members of the Combined Probus Club of Belmont Central Garden Group Outing set off for Ballarat on 1 March. Naturally, their first port of call when they arrived at the gardens was the begonia display. Unfortunately, the group discovered that they were a week or so too early to gain entry to the display. The magnificent blooms had to be viewed from outside the glassed-in begonia hot house. Not to be deterred, they sneaked a peep through a partly open doorway which gave them some view of the begonias. A little deflated but not discouraged, the group then set off wandering through the gardens, taking in the beautiful dahlias which were in full display and various other sections of the gardens. The weather presented some mixed blessing with intermittent periods of sun and rain which meant that umbrellas and jackets were always at the ready. Belmont has plenty to offer THE Combined Probus Club of Belmont Inc. meets at the Geelong RSL function room on the first Monday of the month at 10am, except in January. Monday 6 March was our 28th annual general meeting! Sixty members met for the monthly general meeting on 6 March, where retiring almoner, Jill Morgan, was interviewed by Sue O’Shea, our speaker’s officer. What an interesting life she has lived. Next came the treasurer, Graham Heenan who was as quick witted as usual! Then it was time for some very important presentations and change over of president and committee. Assistant secretary Pam Heenan presented a small thank you gift to Judith Hines for her beautiful accompaniment on the piano at general meetings commencing from when we met at the Masonic Centre, Regent Street, and our time at White Eagle House during Covid times. Unfortunately, the RSL doesn’t have a piano or a keyboard or she’d still be playing Happy Birthday and other tunes! Then it was time for a chat whilst members collected a cup of tea or coffee. At 11am, president Marie Benney introduced Robin Cawsey, a twice-times past president, as chairperson for the AGM which followed. All positions were declared vacant. It was a pleasure for Robin to announce that all but the almoner’s position were filled. Presentations were made to the retiring past president, Angela Thompson, and two retiring committee persons - Jill Morgan, almoner, and Maree Quamil, fellowship.
President Chris made presentations to retiring committee members, Jill Morgan - almoner (middle), and Maree Quamil fellowship officer. Chris Craig was introduced as president 2023/2024 and new committee member Pam Heaton was warmly welcomed. President Chris thanked retiring president Marie Benney for her work before presenting her with a past president’s badge. Then the group gathered for the annual photo, taken by Max Henriksen. Footnote: By the end of lunch, Sue O’Shea had acquired Pauline Beechey as an almoner. Thanks Pauline!

Looking at the entrance to St Mary’s which was opened for worship (without its slender spire) in 1872 and finally finished in 1937.
St Mary’s Basilica Tour Pamela Duthie OTHERWISE known as St Mary of The Angels, this magnificent bluestone Gothic building has until very recently been the first building one sees on entering Geelong. But now with the recent high rises, the skyline is changing. Thirteen members of the Combined Probus Club of Belmont attended a most informative hour-long tour of St Mary’s Basilica on Wednesday, 15 February, commencing outside in the spacious grounds to hear about the beginnings of the Catholic Church here in Geelong. The tour was organised by Helen Barry. Our guide, Joan West, was excellent! She told of how mass used to be held in homes in Gold Rush times when people first migrated to Geelong. Eventually a small church was opened in 1842. The Presbyterians were the first to build - St Andrews on Church Hill (now known as St John’s Lutheran), followed by the Catholics and later the Anglicans. The bluestone came from Lethbridge Quarry, the sandstone from the Barrabool Hills, the special tiles from Buangor, Ireland, and others from France (because of their colours) and the red marble was imported from Italy. Even rock from the recently visited Big Rock was used! The brass and bronze ten foot spire is of Celtic design and can be seen from many directions at entry to Geelong. The beautiful old Presbytery which once housed the priests was, until 2022, rented by Anum Cara House for their valuable work with cancer sufferers and their families. Now there’s only two priests and they live across the road. Only one gardener is now employed to look after the large grounds. There are still a few staff living across the road who are responsible for the music, the Facebook page and newsletters, etc. Father Dillan organised renovations in 2004 due partly to ground movement. They are still ongoing. There are only five Basilicas in Australia and this is one of them. There are 14 pictures painted in the early 1900s including, I think, The Twelve Stations of the Cross. Originally there were gas lights but in 1911 they were converted to electricity.

Guide Joan West was an encyclopedia of information. Audience: Graham Heenan, Max and Glenise Henriksen, Bob Plowman, Marilyn Kent, Judy Williamson, Pam Heenan, Pam Kilgour, Pam Heaton, Marie Benney, Joyce Fanning and tour organiser, Helen Barry. Heating was added in 2004. There are three choirs. They run a Parish Pantry which opens three times a week using many volunteers. And lots of volunteering work occurs
at Lazarus House (at Geelong Gaol entrance). They also support a church in East Timor. Following the tour, members either walked or drove to The Commo Hotel once
known as the Commun Na Feine on the corner of Kilgour and Bellerine Streets, South Geelong. A variety of meals were enjoyed. Continued page 26 Monday, 17 April, 2023 The Victorian Probian 25

Experience Bendigo’s history BENDIGO was once the richest producer of gold in the world, yielding over 700,000kg during its iconic gold rush, which would be worth a staggering $64 billion in today’s prices. Residents remember Bendigo of their childhood as “streets that literally flowed with gold”. The streets were all dirt back then, and after a good rain, in just about any gutter, you could pan for gold! The grandeur of the gold rush is intrinsically entwined with the city’s identity and is still evident through the imposing architecture, ornate streetscapes, pristine parks and unique cultural experiences. When first arriving in Bendigo, a ticket aboard a Vintage Talking Tram Tour will allow you to get your bearings and see the city’s key landmarks and monuments. As soon as you step aboard your Vintage Talking Tram you’ll become immersed in the artistry of the vehicle. The carefully crafted seats, stain glassed features and intricate details are all indicative of the skilled craftsmen who meticulously built and restored each tram by hand, some of which are over 100 years old. As you sit back and relax you’ll be regaled with fascinating tales of days gone by and discover that it wasn’t just people who used the trams for transportation. Parcels, movie reels and mail bags often found their way onto the trams. Tram Drivers would simply ding their bell to alert businesses expecting a delivery, even the morning and evening papers were delivered by tram. To truly appreciate Bendigo’s golden origins, a visit to Central Deborah Gold Mine is a must, it’s significant as being one of the last commercial mines to cease operations on the wealthy Bendigo goldfield and yielded 929kg of gold from its operations. Kitted-up with a hard hat and light, you’ll descend 61 metres underground with an expert tour guide to explore the honeycomb of hidden tunnels. Whilst underground you’ll discover how gold was unearthed, witness traditional mining

Vaccinating cats will save lives RSPCA Victoria and Lort Smith Animal Hospital have joined forces to encourage the community to vaccinate their cats regularly, in an effort to curb a recent spike of feline panleukopenia, a serious viral disease detected in the Melbourne metropolitan area. This increase may indicate reduced herd immunity due to a drop off in annual vaccinations which are required to manage the disease. In the past three months, RSPCA has diagnosed twenty cases of feline panleukopenia compared to just one case in the same period last year while Lort Smith Animal Hospital has diagnosed 50 cases. These numbers are not unsubstantial as just one infectious cat has the potential to infect all other cats in a facility. As a result of the recent cases of panleukopenia, the daily operations of both RSPCA Victoria and Lort Smith Animal Hospital have been impacted with additional quarantine protocol required to curb the spread of the disease. Subsequently, this has meant an extended length of stay for some cats before they can be adopted which has increased pressure on both organisations. Due to the infectiousness and severity of the disease, both organisations are concerned for the welfare of Victoria’s cats and urge cat owners to keep track of when their pet’s vaccinations are due. An annual vaccination from a veterinarian is recommended for all cats and provides excellent protection from
feline panleukopenia. Very difficult to treat, approximately 80% of unvaccinated kittens who contract the disease die. Symptoms include loss of appetite extreme tiredness vomiting fever or fluctuating temperature dehydration diarrhoea (sometimes bloody) Cats seen with their heads hanging over their water or food bowls but not drinking or eating RSPCA Victoria’s Chief Veterinarian Dr Bronwyn Oke said feline panleukopenia spreads easily between cats, is extremely difficult to control and can be fatal. “Due to the pandemic, we are all acutely aware of the importance of vaccinations and how they can play an integral role in our health care and the same can be said for vaccinating our cats against diseases such as feline panleukopenia.
· · · · · ·
“It is important to see a vet immediately if you believe your cat may be suffering from feline panleukopenia. A vet will provide treatment for your cat that might include antibiotics and fluids. However, prevention is the best approach which highlights the importance of regularly vaccinating your cat,” said Dr Oke. Lort Smith Animal Hospital Head Veterinarian Inpatients Dr Andrew Kapsis said regular vaccination is key to keeping cats healthy. “We’re seeing a big rise in kittens with panleukopenia coming through Lort Smith’s Hospital and Adoption Centre, and we all need to play our part containing this deadly and highly contagious disease. We encourage everyone who cares for a cat to get them vaccinated – it’s fast and effective and will help us control outbreaks in our feline communities.” ‘’No matter how large or small, every rescue group and shelter across Australia needs to have effective infection control practices in place. This will help minimise and ultimately stop panleukopenia spilling over to the owned cat population,’’ said Dr Kapsis. If cats become unwell, it is important to isolate them from other cats to minimise disease spread and in a shelter environment. This means quarantining cats for observation to test and treat any cats that exhibit symptoms and to stop the spread to other cats. RSPCA Victoria and Lort Smith have seen an increased length of stay for some cats in their Adoption Centres for this reason. Feline panleukopenia can spread easily

through faeces, urine, saliva or vomit of an infected cat. Contaminated surfaces can also spread the disease. Additionally, the disease can spread to other cats through the clothing and shoes of handlers or owners of infected animals. Reducing the spread Disinfect and scrub food bowls, litter trays, bedding and cages. Contaminated surfaces can be cleaned with veterinary grade disinfectants (e.g., F10) or diluted household bleach (1 part bleach to 30 parts water) and left on hard surfaces for 10-15 minutes. Disinfected surfaces should be rinsed or wiped clean so that the residue does not cause any issues for pets. Any potentially contaminated soft materials should be thrown out. Feed and handle unwell pets last in multi-pet households and to be mindful of cross contamination. Keep affected cats away from other animals. Speak with a veterinarian in relation to any concerns about a pet’s health. Feline panleukopenia can survive for at least 12 months after first appearing in the environment, including on the surface of food bowls, bedding and litter trays. It is important to maintain good hygiene to prevent further disease spread. Infected cats can remain contagious and shed the virus for up to six weeks. The best protection for cats against this disease is regular vaccination.

Going strong for seven years WEDNESDAY 8 March was the seventh birthday for the Glen Waverley Combined Probus Club. It started with our normal general meeting where member number 120, Alison Copley, was inducted into the club by president Carolyn Boyd. We have now reached our limit and have 12 people on the waiting list. During the last 12 months, we have inducted 24 new members which is the largest number for any year of the club’s existence. Before we closed the general meeting, we had a revision of the safety procedures and a practice evacuation to ensure members knew what to expect if there was an emergency. It was then coffee and tea and a piece of birthday cake. There were 97 members at the general meeting, morning tea and cake and they
stayed for the annual general meeting with the election of the management committee for 2023 – 2024. The new committee is a mix of new and experienced members, so is well placed to ensure the continuation of the range of activities and functions to keep the members active. After the presentation of the new committee, David Nairn was inducted to be president by Carolyn Boyd and he spoke to the members, thanking the retiring committee members, welcoming new committee members and encouraging all the members to ensure they support club meetings and activities so we maintain the energy and enjoyment that we currently display. After the completion of the AGM, 47 members went to the Burvale Hotel for lunch and there was lots of discussion, with good food and drinks enjoyed by all.
A delicious cake was enjoyed by all.

Spitroast to welcome in 2023 AFTER negotiating the lengthy path to obtaining a permit from Parks Victoria, the Glen Waverly Combined Probus Club held a spitroast at Jells Park as the first function of 2023 to welcome in the New Year. MAK’s Catering set up their tent under a big oak tree and members started arriving at 4pm with their chairs and drinks in hand setting themselves up around the tree and also in the nearby shelter. There were over 80 members at the spitroast and based on the level of conversation there was lots to catch up on since we had our Christmas Lunch. It was soon 6pm and time to sample the spitroast and salads. The line quickly formed and people filled their plates with pork, beef and different salads all of which went down well. There was plenty of room and lots of shade so everyone was able to have their meal in comfort. After the main course everyone enjoyed the cheesecake dessert before continuing with the socialising and catch up in the balmy weather. Everyone agreed this was a great way to start the year and bodes well for another successful year for the Glen Waverley Combined Probus Club.

A trip to Williamstown ON a lovely sunny Friday, nearly 40 members of the Glen Waverley Combined Probus Club boarded a bus at the Burvale Hotel to begin their trip to Williamstown. The trip to Docklands was quick and we were soon boarding the tram boat which was docked next to the ferry wharf. With the lovely weather, the upper deck of the boat was available to the group and a number went up there to take in the view as we moved out of Docklands and down the river past the Port of Melbourne and out under the Westgate Bridge listening to a very informative commentary. Sitting in the boat, we felt very small as a container boat passed us on its way to the docks. A lovely morning tea was served as we headed towards Williamstown. The boat moved through boats at anchor before docking next to the Castlemaine, the naval ship permanently tied up at Williamstown. Everyone got off and walked across the road to the Williamstown shops. Some wandered through the shops while others found a lovely hotel to have a drink and watch the passing traffic. On the way back to the tram boat we took in the lovely park and great view of Melbourne which looked lovely under the blue skies. Once everyone was back on the boat, we were all provided with our personal box of fish and chips to enjoy with a drink you can purchase on the boat. The fish and chips were lovely as the fish was small bite size and the chips were crisp. On our way back to Docklands we were overtaken by another container ship and we all realised how skilful the pilot and ship’s captain are to manoeuvre these huge ships

along the river to their dock. It is a great view of the city skyline and the Docklands as we head into the dock and onto our awaiting bus. Unfortunately, due to a bushfire on the
side of the Monash resulting in three lanes being closed, our trip back to the Burvale took nearly two hours - much to the driver’s frustration - but gave us all time to discuss the experience we had.
IT was a joyful occasion when the Ladies Probus Club of Glen Waverley celebrated its 35th Birthday in February. The club had its first general meeting on 24/3/1988 when Barbara Thompson, a past city of Waverley mayor, was its inaugural president. Barbara has been an actve club and committee member throughout the life of the club. In addition to Barbara the club proudly boasts four other foundation members who are active in the club today. They are Alma Cargeeg, Nita Fawcett, Lesley Goullett and Jean Horsley. The club also boasts 14 past presidents who remain active members today. It opened with 83 members and has 100 members today. It provides interesting and varied activities which appeal to all interests and tastes. The club really does live up to the probus mantra of Friendship, Fun and Fellowship

Five Warburton adventures 1. Redwood forest Discover the stunning Californian Redwoods, a few kilometres outside Warburton. There are over 1476 trees ranging from 20 metres to the tallest being 55 metres. They are in good condition and as they are planted in a grid are aesthetically pleasing to the eye. You can find this fascinating area by driving through Warburton, following the Warburton Highway until it becomes Woods Point Road. After about 7 km, look for Cement Creek Road on the left. This is unsealed and a little rough in places, but 0.7 km along you will find a small parking area on the right along a fenceline and small gate barrier. Walk through the barrier and there you are! Some great photo opportunities. 2. La La Falls A short distance from the heart of Warburton, are the beautiful La La Falls at 25 Irruka Rd. From town follow the signs from Park Rd along Old Warburton Road, to the start of the track at a small, sign posted car park. Take your time as you walk through lush rainforest protected by a stunning canopy. Look out for snow daisy bush, musk daisy bush, blanket-leaf, bootlace bush, silver wattle and hazel pomaderris, mountain grey gum, mountain ash and manna gum. At a leisurely pace the 1.6km walk up to the falls should take around 20 minutes. 3. Bike or hike Hire a bike, or BYO, and discover the stunning network of trails from Millgrove through to East Warburton. Stroll along the magnificent Yarra River, feed the ducks, criss-cross the town’s landmark bridges. Rug up and warm your hands and your heart with steaming hot fish and chips down by the river. Call in at the Water Wheel Tourist Information Centre for maps and local knowledge of the many walks and trails around the district. 4. Boinga Bob’s House Perched high above the town on Highfield Road, Boinga Bob’s extraordinary house has become a must-see for visitors to Warburton. Bob is passionate about art and people and his love and knowledge of different cultures is showcased in this unique feature of Warburton. View the 32 The Victorian Probian Monday, 17 April, 2023
house from Highfield or from the trail behind the WaterWheel. The walk along Highfield Road offers great view over the town taking you back to two of the town’s iconic examples of brutalist architecture, the old Sanitarium Weet-Bix factory and Signs Publishing. 5. Water park Autumn can still offer up days warm enough for water play. Warburton Water World is a fun playspace and recreation area for people of all ages. There is also a fabulous picnic and barbecue area, brand new toilet facilities and amazing water features, including a drenching bucket. The water play park is located at 20 Woods Point Road, Warburton, next to the Warburton Caravan Park. If driving from Melbourne/Lilydale, the park is on your right after the turnoff to Mount Donna Buang (heading towards East Warburton). Warburton Water World is free to all visitors. Be mindful that car parking is limited and the park may be busy on warm days.

Celebrate everything chestnut Parker McKenzie THE yearly Kalorama Chestnut Festival returns on Sunday 7 May, bringing people all across the Dandenong Ranges and surrounding areas to enjoy delicious roasted chestnuts, food stalls, local craft products and more. The volunteer-ran festival, which is a joint fundraiser for Mt Dandenong Primary School and Mt Dandenong Kindergarten, has been running for over 30 years. Coordinator Victoria Clarke, who is also
an educator at Mt Dandenong Preschool, said the main stage will feature a good line-up of bands as well as the regular festivities. “We’re trying to have a bigger focus on different chestnut things this time, like chestnut soups, chestnut cookies and more,” she said. “It’s a massive community draw and what the hills is really about. It brings everybody together and is run solely by volunteers, there’s a huge amount of work put in.” After Mt Dandenong Preschool was damaged during the June 2021 storm, it was forced to move to a temporary facility while a new preschool is being built on the
Primary School’s grounds. Ms Clarke said the Chestnut Festival is probably the most important fundraiser of the year. “It keeps that tradition and brings the community together,” she said. “You’ve got stalls, different foods, different craft stores and a lot of hard work goes into it.” The festival is supported by local businesses and is held at the Kalorama Oval. Other stalls on the day will include poffertjes, homemade cakes, sausage sizzles, stalls from local restaurants, mulled wine, coffee, tea and chai, and local produce.
Ms Clarke said she often sees previous students from the school return to the festival as adults. “Losing the kinder, it was something that really drove me to step up and start coordinating it,” she said. “I see families that I haven’t seen in a long time come back. The Hills community is very special and it’s really important to come together and celebrate.” Parking on the day at the oval costs $5, with all proceeds going towards the Ferny Creek Club Scouts. · 40g macadamias, finely chopped. · 2 large eggs, at room temperature. · 110g caster sugar. · 60g unsalted butter. · 100g good quality dark chocolate. · 40g black sesame paste. · 40g roasted macadamia butter. · 15g (1 tbsp) honey. · 50g plain flour, sifted. · 10g (1 tbsp) Dutch-processed cocoa, sifted. · Pinch of fine sea salt.
Method: 1.
Preheat oven to 170 degrees Celsius or 150 fan forced. 2. Grease or line three 10cm (4”) cake pans with greaseproof paper. 3. Roast the chopped macadamias for 5-7 minutes or until fragrant. 4. The additional macadamias and sesame seeds required for the praline can also be roasted and set aside at this stage. 5. Melt the butter and chocolate on a low heat in a medium saucepan, then stir through the black sesame paste, macadamia butter and honey. 6. Set aside to cool for 5-10 minutes. 7. Whisk the eggs and sugar in stand mixer on medium speed for 2-3 minutes until pale, then gradually whisk in the melted chocolate mixture on a low speed until smooth. 8. Sift the flour, cocoa and salt together in a medium bowl then fold into the cake batter in 2-3 batches. 9. Divide the batter evenly between the cake pans, weighing pans to ensure equal volume. 10. Bake in the lower third of preheated oven for 28-32 minutes, or until a cake tester comes out with moist crumbs. 11. Allow the cakes to cool in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack and allow to cool completely. 12. For the chocolate honey frosting, beat the butter, sugar, cocoa and salt in freestanding mixer with a paddle attachment until light and fluffy, then beat in honey. 13. If frosting is too thick and firm, gradually add the milk while beating, until velvety soft, light and fluffy.

This cake is moist and deliciously decadent.
layers, providing a lovely crunch and contrast against the rich chocolate, while a dash of honey lends a delicate sweetness. Adorned with crisp shards of macadamia black sesame praline, this teeny tiny cake would make the perfect offering from one chocolate and macadamia lover to another Chocolate honey frosting
· 80g, unsalted butter, softened. · 120g icing sugar, sifted. · 20g (2 tbsp) Dutch-processed cocoa, sifted. · Pinch of fine sea salt. · 15g (1 tbsp) honey. · 1-2 tbsp whole milk. · Macadamia black sesame praline: · 5g black sesame seeds. · 20g macadamias, finely chopped. · 60g caster sugar. · Pinch of sea salt flakes. To serve · Chocolate-covered macadamia nuts, optional. 14. For the macadamia black sesame praline, preheat the oven to 170 degrees Celsius or 150 fan forced and roast black sesame seeds on a tray for 3-5 minutes and macadamias for 5-7 minutes or until fragrant. 15. Melt the sugar in saucepan until a dark amber colour, then pour into a large tray, taking great care not to burn yourself. 16. Rapidly sprinkle sesame seeds, chopped macadamias and sea salt flakes over the hot toffee before it cools, to ensure they stick. 17. Allow to cool completely in dry conditions. Break into shards. 18. Praline can be made in advance and stored in an airtight container to maintain crispness. 19. To serve, level the cakes by slicing off the slight dome shape top of each cake. 20. Place the first layer on a serving plate or mini cake stand and spread a layer of frosting on top, smoothing with a palate knife. 21. Repeat frosting for the second and third cake layers. 22. Decorate with shards of macadamia black sesame praline and chopped chocolate-covered macadamia nuts, serving any remaining praline or macadamias on the side.
