More than a name

Inspired by his primary school principal who is walking the infamous Kokoda Track this week, Cockatoo’s Samuel Ware, 10, has learnt about his namesake for Anzac Day.

His great-grandfather Samuel Pyke served in WWII in the 39th Battalion on the Kokoda Track.

Club in the red

Pakenham’s only golf club has gone into voluntary administration.

News of Deep Creek Golf Club going bust was confirmed by Cardinia Shire Council on Wednesday 19 April.

Cardinia Shire Council manager active and connected communities Kristen Jackson said the shire was informed of the voluntary administration of the Deep Creek Golf Club and was still developing and working through its options.

This includes engagement with the administrator appointed by the Deep Creek Golf Association.

Knocked back

The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) has rejected a permit for a proposed 28-dwelling development in Beaconsfield.

Melbourne-based real estate developer MAB Corporation proposed the development on a block along Mahon Avenue Road last year. Cardinia Shire Council had failed to decide on the permit in time.

Along the course of the tribunal, the council supported the denial of a permit.

VCAT has supported the council’s approach by denying a permit on grounds of neighbourhood character and amenities.

Key problems identified included the height of the building that is irregular for the surrounding area and the close proximity of car parking to living spaces.

Pub’s last drinks

A town institution was born in April 1880 when beer first started flowing from wooden kegs at the Gembrook Hotel, adjacent to the newly built train line in Pakenham.

There was a captive early clientele, with the railway construction bringing with it a tent city of 400 thirsty workers.

One hundred years later, the hotel became known locally as Purvies after Maud and Dave Purves who ran the establishment from 1946.

In 2019, the hotel was refurbished and renamed The Drake, after nearby Drake Place.

Last week it was announced that the iconic Pakenham establishment would cease running as a pub, with a new future envisioned

for the site.

Current owner Brendan Theobold said unfortunately running a hospitality venue had become “unviable”.

“It’s something that has been brewing for a little while. Covid-19 was horrible for the hospitality industry,” he told the Gazette.

“The costs involved versus the return was unsustainable.

“And people talk about the cost of living crisis- people’s spending habits are getting tighter and tighter.”

Mr Theobald hopes to re-purpose the venue as shops, childcare, medical centre or consultation rooms.

Last drinks will be mid-May.
