Church on the backburner
A place of worship could be built in a ‘statesignificant’ industrial estate in Pakenham after Cardinia Shire councillors voted against a recommendation to knock back the development.
Councillor Collin Ross said the council should support organisations which do good in the community.
“If you don’t give them space for a home somewhere that’s affordable, they just go somewhere else or they can’t exist,” he said. In disagreement, Cr Kowarzik said: “It’s just about being in the wrong place. That’s all we can look at.”

Driver arrest
An alleged eight-month-long hooning spree has come to an end for an 19-yearold Berwick man, who was arrested and had his vehicle seized by investigators from the Achilles Taskforce on Friday 28 April.
Police will allege the 19-year-old Berwick man was travelling south along the Monash Freeway near the Ernst Wanke Road exit on 25 April at about 2.30am, reaching speeds of approximately 262km/h. During an early morning search warrant at a residential address in Lawton Grove, Berwick, police arrested the 19-year-old man and seized a red Mercedes AMG.

Upgrade before art
By Corey Everitt
Locals are disappointed with Cardinia Shire Council after it spent $15,000 on a piece of artwork, printed on PVC banner mesh and cable-tied to a chain link fence at the Pakenham Outdoor Pool.
The council contributed $20,000 to the
project, with $5000 to be spent on maintaining the existing fence structure.
The mural, which was proposed in late 2021, was put up last week.
The proposal was for a mural artwork to be placed in the back part of the outdoor pool on the corner of John and Anderson Streets.
When the council invited artists to apply in
late 2021, they proposed that up to $20,000 can be used to cover costs for the artwork.
The artwork is a colourful collection of items synonymous with pools and swimming artistically rendered by Melbourne artist Carla Gottgens; it is called ‘Sunburn, Sunnyboys and Speedos’.
For many years, residents have raised con-
cerns about the council’s maintenance and quality of the pool, claiming the council neglects the pool, leaving them without an outdoor swimming space to enjoy.
Some residents’ first reaction to the mural proposal was hostile, arguing the money should have been used to improve the pool.
