Rubbish rise
ThePakenhamOpShopistoforkouthundreds of dollars to get rid of rubbish that shouldn’t be their responsibility, as they call on the community to stop dumping unusable items.
On Tuesday morning, the Pakenham Op Shop volunteers were greeted to various large, unusable items left overnight in the back alley of the shop.
Things like broken furniture and mattresses are not ideal items for them to resell, so now the burden falls on them to dispose of the rubbish.
Bev Burley and Jan Taylor from the Pakenham Op Shop say it’s happening too regularly. STORY PAGE 5
Charity strain
The Casey North Community Information and Support Service is so snowed under with emergency relief and crisis support that it is considering “cancelling Christmas”.
In an open letter sent to the Gazette, CNCISS executive officer Helen Small said pressure on the charity group was so intense that the Christmas program was in doubt.
“In previous years, we have helped over 200 families with Christmas food hampers and presents for the children,” Ms Small explains in the letter. “While the goods we distribute are donated, the coordination and giving falls to paid staff and volunteers who are diverted from their usual emergency relief or crisis support roles to provide this service - we cannot afford to do that this year.
“Compounding all the above is the reduction in assistance we can levy from our community service partners and philanthropic trusts, all of whom face the same increase in demand and the same reduction in the real value of the funding they receive and supports they usually offer.”

Keep kiln promise
By Corey Everitt
The prominent James Hicks Pottery site in Officer, known colloquially as the Kiln, has been sold to a local developer, who intends to preserve the more than century-old kiln and
chimney for generations to come.
Morgan Development Group (MDG) has been a South East based developer for more than 20 years, with the company recently acquiring the historical James Hicks Pottery Site from Parklea Developments.
The Kiln is remnant of Officer’s industrial history in the brick, pipe and pottery trades dating back to the 1880s, granting the site historical status in the Cardinia Shire.
In recent years it has been a site of dispute. In 2020, the previous owner Parklea applied to
subdivide the property into two lots where the key link of historical features, the brick kiln, chimney and clay pit, would be separated by developments as part of the surrounding Timbertop Estate.
