Over and out for firefighter
After 35 years of dedicated service to the CFA, Graham Lane worked his final shift at Belmont Fire Station this week. A career that began in 1988 came to end on Wednesday, July 5, and Graham’s final shift was a sentimental one, working alongside his daughter Becky Finke.
Graham said the camaraderie was the best part about the job and will now have more time to play golf, go camping, fish, and look after his grandchildren.

Jobs booming in Geelong
By Matt Hewson
Geelong recorded the highest employment growth of all large Australian regional cities in 2022, according to new data released this week.
An extra 12,100 jobs were created in Greater Geelong throughout 2022, taking the total number of jobs to 135,562 at a growth rate of 9.8 per cent – more than double the state average (3.8 per cent) and triple the national figure (3.2 per cent).
And while regional Victoria is outstripping other states with a jobs growth rate of 5.3 per cent, without Geelong figures included that numberfallsto4.4percent–lessthanhalfthat
of Victoria’s second biggest city.
Geelong’s three biggest industries added the mostjobs, withhealthcareandsocialassistance adding 3931 jobs, construction 1603 and professional, scientific and technical services adding 1423.
The highest employment growth rate areas were rental, hiring and real estate (+38.8 per cent), information media and telecommunications (+37 per cent) and agriculture, forestry and fishing (+35.9 per cent).
Geelong’s gross regional product (GRP) also showed impressive growth over the same period, increasing from $15.9 billion to $17.58
billion at a rate of 10.3 per cent - the second fastest rate in the country only behind the mining area of Karratha, according to the City of Greater Geelong.
Mayor Trent Sullivan said the city’s strong jobs market was continuing to draw more people to the region.
“The diversification of our local economy, significant private and public investment, a growingnumberofmajororganisationscalling Geelong home and population growth have increased the type and amount of employment opportunities available,” he said.
“More people are realising that not only does Greater Geelong have an enviable lifestyle and
stunning natural environment, but there are competitive employment options in a range of fields.”
Committee for Geelong chief executive Michael Johnston welcomed confirmation Geelong was booming but said growth came with its own challenges, particularly around housing and transport.
“We are already seeing a shortage in housing and a desperate need for investment in transport infrastructure,” he said.
“Without action, Geelong’s comparative advantagewilldisappear.Weneedtoreimagine how we move around Geelong, and public and active transport must be at the centre of this.”

Embracing NAIDOC Week creativity
A Geelong health insurance organisation has celebrated NAIDOC Week with an in-house painting session with Wadawurrung
Traditional Owner and visual artist Jenna Oldaker.
GMHBA people and culture chief Kate Barlow said it was a “real privilege” to have Oldaker at the organisation’s main Geelong building on Tuesday, July 4, to discuss her artwork with staff.
“People have been coming from all three floors in the building to ask questions and to see the artwork,” she said.
“For people to be able to talk to her, understand what she’s doing, understand what the painting means, and how it connects to local landmarks and history creates a great learning opportunity.”
Oldaker said the event was an “exciting” opportunity to celebrate the NAIDOC Week theme ‘For Our Elders’ and a “testament to the community” on taking on the First Nations culture.
“Mymumandmygrandmotherarethemost inspirational people for me,” she said.
“ForusasFirstNationspeople,it’s(NAIDOC Week) a celebration of our achievements and everything that makes our culture wonderful.”
Oldaker said she received a lot of questions from GMHBA staff about her artwork and loved connecting with people through her art.
“Painting is normally a solitary thing as I really just do it at home so it’s really lovely to be able to share it as I work and for people to see the process,” she said.
“For people to see it with their own eyes either passively as they’re walking past or to comeandhaveayarnwithmehasworkedwell.
Oldaker’s mum, Aunty Joy Oldaker, said she wasdelightedtoseeherdaughterincorporating their heritage in her artworks.
“I’m so proud of what she’s achieved and where she’s come from, it’s amazing,” she said.

20 year cancer award for Alan
Geelong’s Alan Barlee has received the nationalMaxGardnerAwardfor20years of service in helping raise awareness of prostate cancer.
The Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA) presented the cancer survivor with the award on June 30.
Mr Barlee said he first encountered prostate cancer in 2003 when he was 61.
“I’ve been something of an assiduous student of the clinical research with benefit of the internet,” he said.
“Through constructive dialogue with my physicians, we’ve always managed to agree on next steps and unfortunately there’s been a number of them.”
Mr Barlee said he “couldn’t quite believe” that he would receive the award for supporting other men with prostate cancer as a Geelong Prostate Support Group member.
“It’s a nice feeling to have that peer recognition but it was the last thing I was expecting to hear about,” he said.
“There’s a great lack of knowledge amongguyswhotendnottoseekmedical attention very often until it’s a bit late, particularly with cancers.”
Mr Barlee said that “patient empowerment is critical”.
“We’ve got a bit of ground to make up with males to take a more active interest in their health,” he said. “That means understanding what tests there are, what symptoms one should be aware of, and getting familiar with the pathology and imaging results. A lot of guys just don’t go to the doctor until they’re absolutely forced too, very often by their partners, and this macho attitude that I can tough it out, it’s not smart.”

Barwon Heads Rd upgrade done
The Barwon Heads Road upgrade has been completed six months ahead of schedule, delivering drivers, cyclists and pedestrians safer and more reliable travel.
Stage one of the $365 million project has added close to four kilometres of extra lanes between Belmont and Charlemont to accommodatecloseto44,000dailyjourneysby 2031.
South Barwon MP Darren Cheeseman said the project included intersection upgrades, shared pedestrian and cyclist paths, and the Marshall rail line improvements.
“The removal of the level crossing is a particularly welcome improvement to Barwon Heads Road,” he said.
“The replacement of the level crossing with the bridge over the rail line at Marshall is a majorboosttoboththesafetyandthereliability of travel on the road.
“The level crossing’s removal is especially beneficial to the increasing number of drivers who use Barwon Heads Road at peak travel times.”
Federal Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government
Minister Catherine King said the completion announcement followed the opening of the Geelong-bound carriageway over the bridge at Marshall on May 24.
“This upgrade will have long-term benefits for residents, businesses and visitors,” she said.
“It is an important investment in vital infrastructuretomeettheneedsofthegrowing community of the Geelong region now and into the future.”
Bellarine MP Alison Marchant said the project provided “improved traffic conditions” and encouraged people to “consider active
transport options”.
“I am pleased the community and travellers are now reaping the full benefits of the upgrade,” she said.
“I’m pleased that drivers, pedestrians and cyclists can now use these terrific new community assets.”
The project’s second stage will upgrade Barwon Heads Road from Reserve Road, Charlemont, to Lower Duneed Road to ensure the link between Geelong and the Bellarine is fit for purpose.
Kunuwarra accompanies drivers on their journey
Motorists travelling along the Barwon Heads Road at Marshall will notice Wadawurrung cultural heritage art and design on their journey.
Wadawurrung contributions feature prominently around the road upgrade’s Marshall railway line bridge, 4km shared-use path and retaining wall near Settlement Road. Its approach ramps feature 810 wall panels patterned to represent vertically broken boomerang flanks. BKK Architects collaborated with Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation on the panel design.
Acrylic screens atop the bridge depict a kunuwarra (black swan) flying like movie reel slides as drivers pass. The kunuwarra images are the work of Wadawurrung artist Stephanie (Anie) Skinner.
The retaining wall coloured to reflect the region’s soil is also lined with fins designed so the word ‘Jerringot’ appears as drivers pass in
either direction. Wadawurrung for ‘water all around’ or ‘place of billabongs’, Jerringot is the name given to adjacent wetlands that are habitat for species including migratory wading birds, including Latham’s snipe.

“Kunuwarra is a significant creature to Wadawurrung, and to walk beside her as you move through the landscape honours her story and the importance of the living things that live in and surround the Barwon.”
“Living locally and with Lake Connewarre wetlands just down the road, I see these birds regularly flying over me when I’m working on Country,” Mr O’Toole said.
“It was a real honour to create their footprints and to share my story. I have three children, so for them to be able to go where their father’s artwork appears will be special and they’ll hold that connection for the rest of their lives.”

Tasmanian expansion for genU
Geelong-based disability support provider genU has completed its merger with Li-Ve Tasmania at a formal event in Hobart.
Joining forces under the banner of genU, the two disability and aged care services organisations both bring many decades of experience as regional support providers to the union.
Over 420 Tasmanian staff and 220 clients will transition to genU, which will maintain offices in northern and southern Tasmanian to support its operations in that state.
Announced in March this year, the merger is
a result of Li-Ve active efforts to find a partner to ensure its sustainable long-term future in Tasmania.
The expanded organisation will engage in additional services in both Tasmania and the Barwon and Grampians regions through funding from the federal government’s Aged Care Volunteer Visiting Scheme.
The funding will provide extra services for elderly people and volunteer opportunities across Victoria and Tasmania over the next three years.
Clare Amies, genU chief executive, said the

GrahamLanestartedhisfirefightingcareer in July 1988 and celebrated close to 35 years of service at the Belmont Fire Station during his last working shift on Wednesday, July 5.
Mr Lane said he took up firefighting as a “lifetime career” and loved working with a great group of people who could rely on each other.
“One of the guys at the footy club was a firefighter, and he started talking about it, and I thought, wow, that sounds like a good career, and it has been.
“My favourite part of the job is the camaraderie of knowing each person’s looking after everyone and the interesting type of work that we do.”
Mr Lane said it was the right time for him to retire from firefighting, and he looked forward to having more time on his hands to
play golf, go camping, fish, and look after the grandkids.
“It’s pretty demanding shift work for 35 years,” he said.
“You get to a point in your career where you’re putting a breathing apparatus on during every call, which isn’t so bad when you’re 25, but gets harder as you get older.”
Daughter Becky Finke followed in her dad’s firefighting footsteps and said she was honoured to work with him during his last shift.
“The more people you speak to that do the job, they’ll say it’s the best job in the world, so it didn’t take too much convincing,” she said.
“You don’t know what you’re going to get each day which keeps it interesting, and the bond with our teammates is like having another family away from home.”

addition of Li-Ve to the organisation would bring greater breadth and depth to its services.
“Through the combined strength of our organisations, we will be able to continue providing high-quality services and supports, as well as create pathways to benefit clients and more career opportunities for staff,” she said.
“The benefit of local knowledge combined with national scope, is an exciting prospect.
“We’re also excited to announce the expansion of our volunteer and student placement programs.”
Li-Ve Tasmania board chair and former
Tasmanian Premier David Bartlett said he was looking forward to his transition to the genU board.
“The Tasmanian part of genU now makes up almost half of the organisation’s core disability services business and genU is Tasmania’s second largest disability support provider, so we have a significant platform locally and an opportunity to contribute on the national stage,” Mr Bartlett said.
“I’ll be working to make sure that there is continuity for people genU now supports locally and for their staff and communities.”

Get involved in NAIDOC Week
By Cr Trent Sullivan
It is a special time on our calendar as the City of Greater Geelong celebrates NAIDOC Week.
NAIDOC Week commemorates the culture, history, and achievements of Aboriginal and TorresStraitIslander people, and is observed across Australia in multiple placesofwork, schools, andtiersofgovernment.
It is an occasion that continues to grow in stature, and I am proud that council is partnering with our First Nation communities again this year.
NAIDOC Week allows residents to get to know our region’s First Nations communities in a more meaningful manner and celebrate their significance.
The theme for NAIDOC Week is ‘For Our Elders’, which pays tribute to the vital role that Elders have played and continue to play within First Nations communities as trailblazers, nurturers, advocates, teachers, survivors, leaders, and cherished individuals.
As a Council we are proud to be listening to, recognising and celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
We did this recently at our ‘The Heart – A Shared Journey’ event, which brought Wadawurrung Traditional Owners, First Nations community elders and representatives from Reconciliation Victoria together at Wurriki Nyal.

New councillor making her mark
Newly-elected Windermere Ward councillor Sarah Hathway will replace former councillor Kylie Grzybek. She spoke to Matt Hewson about what she hopes to achieve over the next 18 months.
Geelong’s newest councillor Sarah Hathway will represent the residents of Windermere Ward following a countback by the Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) on Wednesday, June 28.
Cr Hathway was widely considered the favourite having received the third highest number of primary votes in the 2020 council election behind former councillor Kylie Grzybek and current deputy mayor Anthony Aitken. An active Socialist Alliance member, Cr Hathway said she was “genuinely excited” when the countback confirmed she had been elected to the role.
“I had the third highest primary vote from the 2020 election, so I thought I was maybe 80 per cent of the way there, but because that election was held during COVID, we didn’t have scrutineers in the room to see how the preferences were flowing,” she said.
“So even the night before (the countback) I’d startedtalkingmyselfoutofit;ifthepreferences didn’t go to me it would be someone else.”
A resident of Geelong since early childhood, Cr Hathway has lived in Corio and Norlane for thebetterpartoffiveyearsandcurrentlyworks four days a week in Corio-based community mentalhealthserviceasasocialworkgraduate.
She has been an active participant in community groups involved in climate change awareness and other social issues, including the recent library and pool closure protests.
Cr Hathway said her professional, personal and municipal lives were all centred on the Corio and Norlane community.
“I’m not going to be ignoring any parts of Windermere Ward, but my heart really lies
with Norlane and Corio, that’s the area I’m familiar with,” she said.
“Obviously there are a lot of barriers and areas of disadvantage in that community, but I thinktherearealotofreallyamazingstrengths as well.
“So this is a really good opportunity to have this platform … to go back to residents and say how do we use this platform as a community
for the next less than 18 months until the next election.
“It gives an opportunity to be a voice that otherwiseNorlaneandCorioperhapswouldn’t have.”
Cr Hathway said her focus would be on supporting and re-enfranchise those experiencing disadvantage and working to increase civic education in her ward.
“There are a lot of people out there who have issues or grievances who don’t know where to go, or how to get any of that addressed,” she said.
“As much as possible (I’ll) do what I can to link them with the right support, knock some of those barriers down, and where people don’t have the confidence or capacity to be their own voice (I need to) go, right, I’ve got this position, I’ll make sure I use it.”
The recent protests over library and pool funding had shown that people had power, Cr Hathway said.
“The three save libraries groups have just done amazing work,” she said.
“Obviously we wanted all our services to remain fully funded; we didn’t get everything we wanted, but without those campaigns we’d have three libraries closing, so they did achieve a lot over a very short period of time.
“Ourdemocracyatanylevelisonlyasstrong as(theamountof)peoplethatengagewithit. If people aren’t engaging then things start sliding through that perhaps shouldn’t.
“There’s still a drive there from the community campaign side of things; (they’re saying) ‘this isn’t done yet, we’ve got elections in less than 18 months and we’re going to keep going’.”

Artists excited to share journey
By Matt Hewson
Composer-pianist Kym Alexandra Dillon and baritone Stephen Marsh, both based in Geelong, join forces with trailblazing Melbourne performing arts company Forest Collective to bring an important original work to local audiences.
Dillon’s composition Diapsalmata:Portrait ofaSelf is a reflection on her journey from gender dysphoria to self-discovery, featuring text from Danish existential philosopher Søren Kierkegaard set to music and sung by Marsh.
Marsh, who attended Christian College
with Dillon (though his class was two years below hers), said Diapsalmata was one of the most important works he had ever performed.
“Having the opportunity to perform a piece like this is a once in a lifetime opportunity,” he said.
“To be part of this project, a part of Kym’s vision, to tell the story of someone, and a very personal story at that, is incredibly humbling.
“I can’t put into words how important this piece has been to me and my growth, both as an artist and a person. Although it’s a very personal story for Kym, it can be recognised and taken on by many people.
“It is relevant. It has the potential to change

Grace embraces the chance to train with the Renegades
Geelong and Armstrong Creek cricketer
Grace Jones will train with the Melbourne Renegades WBBL squad after winning The Recruitthis week.
The 18-year-old leg-spinner won the final after making her way through the initial 11 and then six and then final three in a three-part miniseries to find the best player in community cricket competitions across the state with the potential to play at a higher level.
The final episode was aired on Tuesday, July 4, but Grace knew the result beforehand.
“I actually already knew the outcome before the airing of the episode, I’d been told,” she said.
“But I didn’t realise how nervous I was until Helmo (coach Simon Helmot) called me to let me know the result.”
Playing for Geelong Cricket Club and Armstrong Creek Cricket Club (Men’s) in Victorian Premier Cricket and the Bellarine Peninsula Cricket Association, respectively, Grace takes great pride in looking to outsmart her opponents and taking key wickets.
“I’m hoping that it is another opportunity to challenge myself, and look at how the squad prepares and conducts themselves,” Grace said.
“I’m definitely really excited, so I’m sure it (training) will be on my mind until I can get stuck into it.
“I’d like to thank and shout out, everyone at (Armstrong Creek Cricket Club) ACCC, Geelong CC, my immediate and extended family. And also, most importantly, my specialistcoachesNeilGrayandScottLindsey, for all their support in my cricket journey up to this point.”

Preserving native vegetation with First Nations method
Our Environment team have been in Lara undertaking ecological burning, helping to protect and preserve native grasses and the critically endangered Spiny Rice-flower.
Our team used the Cool Burn method, used by First Nations people for over 60,000 years to manage land, plants and animals.
Cool burning is small scale and slow moving, enabling animals to escape from the burn site unharmed. It also helps reduce the intensity of bushfires during dry periods.
We’ll be continuing to use these methods to increase biodiversity across the region as we care for our valuable environment.

GEELONG WEST DENTAL
With ageing comes the perception of ill-fitting dentures and loose teeth. However, this is far from the truth. The golden years are when you have the most to smile about.
What are some of the key issues that older Australians face in terms of dental health?
We have found that many older Australians suffer from dental issues due to dental fear. Therefore, they avoid seeing the dentist and only seek symptom-driven treatments. The delays in timely treatment of both tooth decay and advanced gum disease result in the loss of teeth and with it a decline in quality of life. This impedes them from enjoying healthy food and socialising with confidence. Tell us more about your approach to these issues. We are passionate about merging patient centred care with comfort and helping patients overcome their dental fear. Geelong West Dental is designed with patient comfort in mind, beginning with the relaxing ambience of the clinic and also integrating a gentle
approach with state-of-theart dental technology. Our services include happy gas and intravenous sedation for patients who are more anxious or have severe dental fear. Our goals are to minimise discomfort and complete all dental treatments in a timely manner while maintaining the best in quality of care. As tooth loss can be detrimental to general wellbeing, we offer personalised treatments to replace missing teeth. For patients who are missing or about to lose all their teeth, All-Teeth-On-Four dental implants is a revolutionary technique that will enrich the quality of life for many older Australians.
What is so different about All-Teeth-on-Four?
This technique uses four implants, as opposed to five to eight implants in a traditional single arch. It is amazing because there is less surgery, less recovery time and the cost is half of what it would traditionally be. It allows patients to enjoy different varieties of food without worrying about the stability of the prosthesis while eating and socialising.
Do you provide this advanced treatment at Geelong West Dental? We certainly do. As well as providing the latest in implant dentistry, we also offer a complete range of dental treatments including cosmetic, general and family dentistry. We are a team of
Australian-trained dentists who use modern techniques and keep up to date with the latest in dental technology. Our comprehensive approach to dentistry ensures that we focus on the bigger picture when it comes to dental care, rather than patching up teeth when they start developing
issues. At Geelong West Dental we spend time with all our patients making the visit a personable experience, so we are able to best care for our patient’s needs no matter their age.

SISTER BONIFACE MYSTERIES
ABC TV, Saturday, 7.30pm
Divinely inspired and delightfully cheeky, crime-solving nun Sister Boniface (Lorna Watson, pictured) is the secret weapon of her local police (Max Brown and Jerry Iwu) in this cosy, charming and cheerful FatherBrownspinoff. Armed with the most cutting-edge technology the 1960s has to offer, Sister Boniface uses her unique insight and sharp people skills to nail responsible for the frankly alarming number of murders in the aptly named village of Great Slaughter. This week, the town’s Annual Giant Marrow Contest is interrupted when Brutus the dog digs up a human skeleton. Initially believed to be Viking in origin, Sister Boniface determines them to be much more recent.
FBI
10, Sunday, 9pm
Star power and fast-paced cases keep this slick police procedural from blending into the pack. US police dramas are a dime a dozen, but this offshoot from Law&Order’s Dick Wolf sticks to its gun with an unbeatable setting – New York – and a formula that delivers felonies and histrionics in equal measure. Tonight, in “Flopped Cop”, there’s gunfire galore. For a series that focuses on the frenetic nine-to-five of these hardworking officers, this episode extends a compelling window into Tiffany’s (Katherine Renee Kane, pictured) personal life. The case delves into an accountant who is “liquidated” for testifying against a notorious drug lord, with Tiffany at the helm of the investigation.

MY GEELONG
What is your connection to Geelong?
I moved to Geelong from regional Victoria at 19 years old to study psychology at Deakin University.
My husband and I decided to make Geelong our home, and we now live in Armstrong Creek with our two sons.
What do you like about where you live?
I love that Geelong has everything you need without being too big.
It has amazing beaches and great shopping, and you are close enough to Melbourne for any big sporting or music events not on offer here.
What, if anything, would you change about where you live?
Our families live in Regional Victoria and Werribee, so having our immediate family closer to us would be nice.
Thankfully we have created our close-knit group of friends and neighbours who are like an adopted family and provide us with support.
Where is your favourite place to spend time?
I am a bit of a homebody, and I love spending time with my family at home.
Whether swimming in our pool, playing cardsorentertainingfamilyandfriends, there is no place like home.
I also love going to the beach with my husband and children, who love surfing and bodyboarding. Our favourite beaches are Point Roadknight and 13th Beach.
What is something people may not know
about you?
I volunteer as the disability liaison officer for the Geelong Little Athletics Centre. My boys are club members, and we love spending
DINING OUT
Saturday mornings over the summer at the Landy Field Athletics Track.
Given my experience in the industry, I was nominated to take on this role and ensure that
Geelong Little Athletics Club is inclusive and can be accessed and enjoyed by all children, no matter their ability.
What do you like about your work?
I have worked for various Geelong-based disability support services for more than 20 years and have spent my last seven years at genU.
I love working for genU and particularly love that this organisation has been in the Geelong community for over 70 years.
The founders of the organisation were a group of parents who had children with a disability, and these families worked together to create a space that was inclusive and accepting of their loved ones.
The last seven years have seen significant growth for genU. However, the organisation remains committed to the people we support.
Our staff values are strong, and our operating models place the person at the centre of everything we do.
I work with so many committed and passionate people who are truly dedicated to people with a disability and those who are ageing.
It is great to come to work every day and be surrounded by such amazing people.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
The team I support at genU offers allied health services to people with a disability and those who are ageing.
If you would like to find out more about these services and how you can access them, please call and speak to one of our friendly staff on 1300 558 368.

New X-Trail is pick of mid SUVs
By Chris Riley, Marque Motoring
In the process of researching this story I came across a review by one of my esteemed colleagues.
Not once did he mention the fact that Nissan X-TrailandMitsubishiOutlanderareoneinthe same car, sharing a platform and drivetrains. That makes Outlander, the X-Trail’s most direct competitor, or so I would have thought. Ofcourse, theydon’tlookthesameandthere areplentyofotherdifferences, butyouwouldn’t buy one without checking out the other first. Then again, the latest X-Trail is probably the pick of the mid-sized SUVs at the moment -and that’s a pretty big call.
Styling
The styling is evolutionary rather than revolutionary and it is clearly recognisable as an X-Trail, but looks more sophisticated.
Inside, it is a very different story where the car has undergone a complete makeover and looks nothing like the previous model. Piano black has made way for a classy, dark, textured wood-grained effect, while all four doors get wide pockets that can accommodate 500ml drink bottles.
It feels bigger inside too, although slightly shorter than before (4680mm) with the same 2705mm wheelbase.
At the same time, it's 20mm wider and stands 15mm taller, and somehow, they’ve managed to find more rear legroom, with rear doors that open wider for easier access.
Prices range from $36,750 for the five-seat, front wheel drive ST up to $52,990 for the top of the range Ti-L 4WD.
While they call it a 4WD, it’s really all-wheel drive, in the sense that it doesn’t have a transfer case or low range gearing like a Patrol.
Aseven-seatversionoftheSTisalsoavailable for another $3000 which adds all-wheel drive to the mix.
Specialattentionhasbeenpaidtoergonomics and tactile feel of the switchgear and buttons used in the cabin to lend them a high-quality feel.
Research has shown a preference for easy-to-use core functions, so X-Trail features simple, intuitive heating/air-conditioning controls, as well as buttons that govern the central screen functions, such as audio and navigation.
A two-tier centre console provides plenty of space to stash items, with a charge pad in more
expensive models for mobile devices.
Standard equipment for the entry model includes cloth trim and air conditioning, with second row air vents.
The driver’s seat has six-way manual adjustment with power lumbar operation. It rides on 17-inch alloys, with LED head and tail lights, along with auto high beam and dusk-sensing activation plus auto fold, heated exterior mirrors, push-button start, an electric parking brake and rear parking sensors.
By the time you reach the Ti-L (subject of our test), there’s larger 19-inch wheels, tan or black quilted Nappa leather, three-zone climate air, a heated steering wheel, intelligent rear-view mirror, matrix 12-element adaptive headlights and a power tailgate with hands free opening.
Infotainment
The entry-level ST comes with an 8.0-inch infotainment unit that has six speakers and features AM/FM and DAB+ digital radio, wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus four USB ports – two for the front and two for the back.
The touchscreen in Ti-L is 12.3-inches wide, with voice control, built-in navigation, wireless CarPlay, but still wired Android Auto plus 10 speaker Bose audio -- to name a few features.
Engines / transmissions
Fourth generation X-Trail offers a revised 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with 135kW of power and 244Nm of torque – 9kW and 18Nm more than before.
This will be joined shortly by e-Power hybrid versions, based on a 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine, but with more power and torque, available with ST-L, Ti and Ti-L grades.
Available in two- and all-wheel drive configuration, all models are fitted with an Xtronic CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) along with steering wheel mounted paddle shifters and shift-by-wire technology.
Safety
X-Trail scores a full five stars for safety. Dual front, side and curtain airbags are standard, along with a centre airbag which provides addedprotectiontofrontseatoccupantsinside impact crashes.
Autonomous emergency braking (Car-to-Car, Vulnerable Road User, Junction Assist and Backover) as well as a lane support system with lane keep assist (LKA), lane departure warning (LDW) and emergency lane keeping (ELK) and an advanced speed assistance system (SAS) are also standard.
Driving
The seats are generous, supportive with a Euro feel reminiscent of a Pug.
Front and rear doors, front mudguards and the bonnet are all made of aluminium
and the tailgate has been rendered in a composite material – to reduce weight and lift performance.
Key aerodynamic features include tyre deflectors in the lower front fascia and an active grille to control air flow to the engine compartment.
Specially shaped A-pillars and underbody covers manage air flow under the vehicle and a unique‘aircurtain’directsairfromthefrontto the sides of the vehicle.
Intheloadarea, acleverfalsefloorcomposed of two panels can be lifted and fixed vertically to separate the load area into two sections. There’s also under-floor storage for smaller items and room for a space saver spare.
A central console-mounted rotary selector offers five drive modes: Off-Road, Snow, Auto, Eco and Sports.
Fuel consumption is a claimed 7.8L/100km for the Ti-L. It takes standard unleaded and we were getting 8.9 from the 55-litre tank after close to 400km.
Maximum braked towing capacity is up from 500kg to 2000kg.
The previous X-Trail offered perky if ultimately uninspiring performance. Like its predecessor, the all-new model is a bit of a mixed bag in this department.
Although the numbers are slightly larger, the naturally aspirated engine lacks torque down low where it is needed and has to be pushed hard to get it going. This brings on the awful zoominess that we've come to associate with CVTs, together with higher fuel consumption.
Off the boil and cruising the open road performance is relaxed, smooth and relatively effortless. In this context, demanding drivers will most likely find the way the car performs morethanacceptable–andreally, that’sallthat matters.
On the plus side, the ride quality is much improved, withlittleroadnoisepenetratingthe cabin. You’ve gotta like that.
Large, bright, impressive digital displays for the driver and infotainment help the car standout too, with separate controls for most used features.
Of special note, the 10.8-inch head-up display in our Ti-L is one of the few, if not the only example we have ever encountered that is visible through polarised sunglasses. Yay, team!
Summing up
I still remember driving the first-generation X-Trail. It was surprisingly good off road and a dream to drive compared to the big, clumsy 4x4s that ruled the roost back in the day.
X-Trail was late to the compact SUV party but it was well worth the wait. I really liked the previous model that I drove not so long ago, but this one is so much better it doesn’t bear comparison.
Good work, Nissan!

Tuohy to break Irish-born footballer record
Zach Tuohy just wanted to play one game of AFL football when he arrived from Ireland in 2009.
Initially picked up by Carlton in the 2010 rookie draft, Tuohy went on to play 120 games with the Blues before requesting a trade to Geelong.
On Sunday, Tuohy will rack up his 145th game with the Cats and his 265th overall, overtaking the great Jim Stynes for the record for most VFL/AFL games played by an Irish-born footballer.
Stynes played for Melbourne from 1987 to 1998, became club president and co-founded the youth charity The Reach Foundation, and was given a Victorian state funeral after dying of cancer in 2012, aged just 45.
Tuohy said he almost felt guilty at breaking Stynes’ record.
“I don’t think I appreciated the significant impact he had on the game or his legacy post-career,” he said.
“IonlygottoappreciatethatwhenIcameout (toAustralia).Thegoodthingis, withmoreand moreIrishguysandgirlscomingout, hislegacy is getting much more publicity back home.
“I must admit, I was blown away to see how significant a character he was.
“I think it’s probably mostly because I don’t really feel like I belong in Jim’s category as a player and obviously not in terms of legacy so it’s a strange one to feel that I’m now kind of on par with him in games.”
TheCatsfaceNorthMelbourneonSundayat GMHBA Stadium and while they are currently ninth on the ladder, Tuohy said they could still do some damage in September.
“We’ve had some challenges with personnel, we’vegotsomenewguysintothesideandwe’ve just underperformed at different stages,” he said.
“Fortunately for us it feels a little bit like we’ve been here before where we haven’t played our best footy for the first half or first two-thirdsoftheseasonandcomehomepretty strong.
“I think if you look across the competition right now, there’s obviously a few strong teams but it does feel like if you just get there this year you could really cause a big shake up.”
Season opener to be at GMHBA
TheMelbourneRenegadeswillhosttheir 10th BBL clash at GMHBA Stadium this December.
The BB13 has been shortened, but the Renegades confirmed their partnership with Geelong this week and will play their season opener against reigning champs the Perth Scorchers on Sunday December 10.
The Renegades have hosted nine BBL matches at GMHBA Stadium since the first in January 2018.
Melbourne Renegades general manager James Rosengarten said the support from the region is a key focus for the club. “We are thrilled to show our commitment to Geelong with our first home match of the season for BBL13,” Rosengarten said.
“Our membership and fan base in Geelong is strong and continually growing, so we cannot wait to play our firsthomegameatGMHBAStadium. We thank the Victorian government and the City of Greater Geelong for their support of this match and the Renegades.”
Kardinia Park Stadium Trust chief executive Gerard Griffin was thrilled with the Renegades’ return to Geelong.
“It’s fantastic to have the Melbourne Renegades return to GMHBA Stadium for the upcoming season,” he said. “The Renegades have a great presence in the region, and we look forward to hosting a sea of red in the stands.
“Local fans will once again enjoy free family sporting fun and entertainment withtheFestivalofSport, leadingintoan exciting BBL cricket game.”
Date set for Cadel race
Organisers have announced the 2024 Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race will take place over the January 27-28 weekend.

The world-class one-day classic cycling event features the UCI WorldTour Elite Men’s and Deakin University Elite Women’s races, offering equal prize money for the two races and drawing elite women and men cyclists from around the globe.
The TAC People’s Ride is another popular
feature of the cycling carnival, as is the all-inclusive Family Ride along the Geelong Waterfront.
Tourism, Sport and Major Events Minister Steve Dimopoulos said the event was a big drawcard to the Geelong, Bellarine and Surf Coast regions.
“We’re looking forward to seeing a sea of spectators in Geelong and the Surf Coast for the 2024 Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race next January,” he said.
“This incredible weekend of cycling will bring thousands of visitors to the region and
boost business over the long weekend while also showcasing the stunning scenery of the Great Ocean Road to viewers from around the world.”
Last year’s Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race was broadcast to more than 140 countries and attracted more than 100,000 to the region.
