Maternity hubs can cope
By Matt Hewson
St John of God Geelong Hospital and Barwon Health have “categorically” refuted claims Geelong is in the midst of a maternity services crisis following the closure of Epworth Geelong’s maternity ward.
It was reported last week that women in the Geelong region were facing the possibility of being sent up to 75km away to have their babiesdeliveredduetohospitalstaffshortages.
St John of God chief executive Stephen Roberts dismissed the notion of a crisis, saying he was extremely proud of how his staff had responded in the past six months.
“Essentially, it was a doubling in volume in a very short period of time, but we’ve been able to absorb all of the work that’s come out of Epworth so far and we’ve delivered every baby that has been booked with us,” Mr Roberts said.
“No woman has been transferred from here to deliver elsewhere. In that time we were on bypass for a total of six hours during those many months.
“But we have in place, as all reputable health services should, a bypass protocol for circumstances that might arise if something unexpected emerges. Can you guarantee that won’t happen? No. Has it ever happened? No,
it hasn’t.
“We’ve had really productive conversations, collaboration and partnership with Barwon Health to ensure the scenario of sending women outside of the region doesn’t eventuate.”
Barwon Health clinical director of women’s and children’s services, Associate Professor David Fuller, said the situation had been misrepresented.
“(Suggesting women might be sent up to 75km away) is a gross exaggeration,” he said.
“Barwon Health has certainly not been on bypass because of staff shortages ever in my time, and I’ve been here for 20 years.”
Associate Professor Fuller reiterated Mr Roberts’ statements about the productive partnership between Barwon Health and St John of God.
“We’re fortunate in Geelong that we’ve got excellent maternity services, both in the private and the public setting,” he said.
“They work collaboratively and well together. And where the capability level required for receiving care in the private (setting) is greater than what’s able to be provided, we’ve got the capacity to provide that in the public setting.
“We work co-operatively together for the best outcomes for mothers and their babies.”

Concerns over incinerator plan
By Matt Hewson
Community advocates are seeking to raise public awareness of plans to construct a huge waste-to-energy incinerator in Lara and the implications for the city and residents.
Geelong Sustainability will host a public meeting on Monday to brief the community on Prospect Hill International’s (PHI) proposed plant in Lara.
PHI’sincinerator,ifbuilt,wouldburn400,000 tonnes per year of household, commercial and industrial waste, much of which would need to be brought in from elsewhere in Victoria.
Australian National University’s Dr Peter Tait will attend the meeting as its keynote speaker. Dr Tait is a public health expert who published a systematic literature review in 2019 that sought to provide an overview of the evidence on the adverse health effects of waste-to-energy incinerators.
Dr Tait’s 2019 review concluded both old and new incinerators carried potential health risks, including significant associations with some cancers, birth defects, infant deaths and miscarriage. It also found ingestion, or eating foodfromcontaminatedsoil, wasthedominant exposure pathway.
The review concluded that “based on a precautionary principle there is insufficient evidence to conclude that any incinerator is safe”. TheIndependent understands plans for the waste incinerator facility are currently before the Envrionment Protection Authority (EPA), which is assessing the project.
Geelong Sustainability’s Vicki Perrett said many residents were not aware of the plans for the incinerator construction in Lara.
“So we’re trying to build awareness and show that the community has serious concerns,” she said. “Then (we need) to have the council write to the planning minister on behalf of the
Grand reopening festival begins
Geelong Arts Centre (GAC) kicks off its four-week Grand Reopening Festival this weekend, celebrating a new era for the venue following the completion of the $140 million Little Malop Street Redevelopment.
Saturday night’s double-header will feature Jessica Mauboy performing in concert at the Play House to a crowd of nearly 800 people, while the Story House will host a night of stand-up comedy headlined by Dave Thornton.
On Sunday, performers from around the region will showcase the breadth and depth of performing arts in the region at the Community Open Day.
Running over two three-hour sessions at both the Story House and the Play House, the Community Open Day will feature the talents of 20 dance, music and theatre groups, which the public can see for free.
Over the next four weeks the GAC will presentfestivaleventsfeaturingMissyHiggins, Ross Noble, Pseudo Echo and Opera Australia, as well as art exhibitions, backstage tours, family entertainment and thought-provoking theatre.
GAC chief executive Joel McGuinness said he and his team couldn’t wait to unveil the redesigned centre to the public.
“We’resuperexcitedtofinallyopenthesenew spaces for artists and the whole community, “ he said. “It’s been a huge journey, but we’re at the finish line now. We can’t wait to see what the people think of the spaces.”
The new GAC was co-designed in consultation with Wadawurrung Traditional Owners and other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander groups and individuals in the region, which Mr McGuinness said had been a “really important journey”.
“For a number of years now we’ve worked with Traditional Owners and other First Nations people who live here, with ARM architects and the builders to really welcome Countryintotheveryfabricofthebuilding,”he said. “You can feel it, this sense of welcoming, of inclusiveness, of creativity. And that brings us joy to see and feel that.”
Mr McGuinness said the state government, which funded the redevelopment, had provided Geelong with a “once in a generation opportunity”.
“I’m incredibly proud of the tenacity and the vision of the whole team, and my team, over this time. It’s what Geelong deserves,” he said.
“Geelong is an incredible place and it’s what the artists and our arts community deserve; to have something that inspires them and allows them to be aspirational in their own artistic and creative practice.”

Marshalltown Road upgrade
Marshalltown Road at Grovedale will benefit from a $1.2 million funding injection for upgrades.
Several black spot road projects in the Corangamite electorate will receive more than $2.3 million in federal government funding, with the Grovedale project to include the construction of wombat crossings on each approach to the existing roundabout at Marshalltown Road, reconstruction of the centre island and splitter islands, a new asphalt surface, road drainage and upgraded street lighting.
The project was submitted for funding by the City of Greater Geelong and is included in the $25.6 million of funding for Victoria roads under the Black Spot Program’s 2023–24 funding round.
The Black Spot Program funds safety measures such as traffic signals and roundabouts at locations where a number of serious crashes are known to haveoccurred, orareatriskofoccurring.
“The Grovedale Primary School community are all very pleased that the Bailey Street and Marshalltown Road area has been identified for such significant upgrades,” principal Tina Barnett said. “Along with our school council, we have been advocating for preventative measures to be installed since mid-2022 and this announcement hascomeasawelcomeacknowledgement of the importance of protecting our local community members of all ages.”
Corangamite MP Libby Coker said:
“In announcing these new projects, this government recognises the importance of working with local councils, including the Surf Coast Shire and the City of Greater Geelong, to deliver this program.”

Helping abused women
Three Geelong year 12 students are helping women in need by raising money for pamper packs to assist with the complicated healing journeys.
NorthernBayCollegeGoldsworthyCampus’ Belinda Heerin, Indyanna Mayo, and William Nadolski chose violence against women to advocate for as it is a social issue they were passionate about.
Belinda said she wanted to focus on violence against women when she first heard about the task in the students’ Literacy Inquiry subject.
“The best thing we can do for women in violent situations is to try to help them find themselves again and support them through their healing journeys,” she said.
Indyanna said the group wanted to help womenbyraisingmoneyforpamperpacksthat included necessary items like sanitary pads, toiletries, candles, activity books, and student letters.
“The items we’ve included in the pack are intended to help women feel like themselves again after a violent situation,” she said.
William said they had already received a good response from the community, with people reaching out to the students through social media showing support for the students’ task.
“The feedback has been all positive so far … and I’m proud to be a part of the project,” he said.
The students’ Literacy Inquiry teacher Falk Davis said the project formed part of the student’s final literacy assignments, focusing on social justice causes and awareness.
“We look forward to seeing what difference they can make to making their community a better place to live,” he said.

Labuan Square’s revival
By Cr Trent Sullivan
It’s remarkable to consider the post-war development that occurred in Geelong’s north.
Homes popped up in their hundreds to accommodate workers who flocked to the industrial giants of the day, such as Ford, Shell, International Harvester, Pilkington Glass and Rylands.
Norlane was effectively transformed from farmland in the mid-1940s to a thriving working-class suburb within a decade.
To cater to the massive influx of residents, Labuan Square shopping centre opened in 1954. It became a local hub of economic and social activity.
Given its 70-year history, so many Geelong people have a connection to it.
Mymumfondlyremembersmygrandfather’s hardware/electronics store in Labuan Square, which he ran during the ’70s and ’80s.
However as the key manufacturing sites shut down, and the larger shopping centre at Corio absorbing trade, the strip suffered and declined.
But it is still here, and we know the local community is keen to see Labuan Square revived.
When council first committed to an upgrade ofLabuanSquare, weaskedresidentswhatthey valued most about the area.
Atotalof180communitymembersprovided their input, which helped us to focus on improving the streetscape with better surfaces, play items, furniture, and gardens.
We were thankfully able to expand the scope of our own $405,000 project, with the support of the state government.
A total of $326,000 from the government allowed us to upgrade the lighting, install new toilet facilities, and generally improve amenities.
By working together, we’ve helped to create a more welcoming and vibrant space, and delivered a much better outcome for the community.
Theupgradewasofficiallyopenedearlierthis month, and features:
•The above-mentioned streetscape improvements, plus smart nodes, CCTV and free public wifi
•Additionalamenities, suchasatoilet, shelter, and children’s waterplay fountain; and
•Afantasticpublicmural,byNikkiMcKenzie, Norm Stanley and Tarryn Love, which highlights First Nations creativity and culture.
As part of our commitment for this to be a
community-led project, we collaborated with Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation and Norlane Community Initiatives.
Boththelandscapingandtheartinstallations reference the nearby Cowies Creek, providing a unique, local touch and a strong sense of community pride.
This upgrade is a big step towards the reactivation that this part of Geelong deserves.
It is now over to the community to take it further.
I encourage other creative businesses and social enterprises to make Labuan Square their home, to attract even more shoppers and diners.
With thousands of visitors accessing the nearby Spirit of Tasmania terminal each week, thereisagreatopportunitytocreateanexciting new era for Labuan Square.

Keeping an eye on tradie health
By Jena Carr
A Geelong tradie is warning young tradespeople to protect their eyes and ears all year round while on the job site as Tradies Health Awareness Month wraps up for another year.
Surveyor Ashley Roberts, 40, said it was “really important” that the younger generation use the proper protective work equipment and continue to monitor their health.
“When you get older protecting the ears is crucial especially around loud noises because you can have damage to your hearing when you get older,” he said.
“Especially on the sites I work on, if we use heavy machinery, we have signs advising the need for hearing and eye protection.
“It’s really important that tradies make sure thatthey’reusingthecorrectequipmentsothat they can go home to their family and friends and enjoy the time when you’re not at work as well.”
Waurn Ponds optometrist David Truong said the “younger tradies could learn from their older colleagues” and that once hearing or eyesight is lost, “there is no getting it back”.
“We would really like all tradies in the Geelong area, particularly those aged 18 to 34, to understand the importance of taking preventative measures to look after their hearing and eyesight,” he said.
“We often see older tradies come in citing their workplaces as the reason for their hearing being worse than it used to be or attributing work-related sun damage to their eyes.”
MrTruongsaidwearingpolarisedsunglasses or safety goggles and earmuffs on-site could help protect a person’s eyesight and hearing.
“We know that a large percentage of tradespeople gain eye injuries or sun damage on the job,” he said. “Health professionals want tradies to know that prevention is always better and getting regular health checks is important to retain quality of vision and hearing, both now and for years to come.”

Murran hub is nearly finished
Non-profit organisation Ngarrimili will conduct the first walkthrough of its nearly-constructed First Nations enterprise and retail hub, Murran, this week.
HERE TO HELP WITH FEDERAL GOVERNMENT MATTERS.
the vision is for the Murran Hub and what we hope to achieve out of it when it’s opened up.”
Ms French said the hub was intended to be a place of connection.
AUTHORISED BY LIBBY COKER, ALP, 26/500-540 TORQUAY ROAD, ARMSTRONG CREEK VIC 3217
Intended to help break down the barriers facing First Nations entrepreneurs and businesses, Murran’s primary purposes will be to provide business start-up support and development, education and training, employment and economic development opportunities.
Located on Malop Street in the heart of Geelong, the hub will include meeting and conference rooms, co-working areas, a retail store, gallery and exhibition space and a cafe.
Murran operations manager Samantha French said the first look on Thursday, August 24 was an opportunity for local businesses and organisations to see the hub as it neared completion.
“We’ll have a walk through the hub, then (Ngarrimili chief executive) Bek Lasky will chat about what we want the space to feel like, look like, and the use of it,” she said.
“She’ll talk us through a presentation, what
“What we really want is to get the general community and the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community to come down and use the space as the regular go to for a coffee, see what’s new in the retail store and look at opportunities around support,” Ms French said.
“Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander businesses can hire co-working spaces, hold meetings and formal gatherings. There’s also an art gallery where we can showcase some of the black businesses that we’re supporting, artists and musicians.
“The idea is the space will be culturally safe, an opportunity for the general community to come into a learning space.”
While Thursday’s event is by invitation, Ms Frenchsaidbusinessesorindividualsinterested in being involved with Murran and potentially attending the walkthrough could contact chief executive Bek Lasky on 0480 356 176.
Help arrives from afar
Geelong’s healthcare system continues to receive a boost from the state government’s Pandemic Repair Plan, which has helped hospitalsrecruitworkersfromacrosstheglobe.
Barwon Health officially welcomed another batch of overseas recruits to its ranks this week, bringing the total number of international workers recruited in the past year to 91, with 22 more in the pipeline.
Coming from Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, UK and USA, the recruits have bolstered Barwon Health’s staffing capacity.
New Singapore recruit Nydalenn Reyes, now a registered nurse at Barwon Health, said the hospital had been amazingly helpful through the process and she loved working in her new environment.
“I’ve been here since COVID-19, doing travel nursing for the Department of Health, moving all across Australia,” she said. “I’ve been at different hospitals, where it’s very chaotic and some people are not really very happy, even though they’re trying their best.
“Buthere, evenifwe’rebusywe’restillsmiling and laughing while we work. I love working with my team, and my nurse unit manager is just great. Everyone’s very supportive.”
Barwon Health talent acquisition partner for international recruitment Michelle Jolly supports the hospital’s new recruits once they get to the contract stage of the process, sorting out visas, finding accommodation and support
for spouses and family members.
She said the international recruits had been critical from a basic staffing standpoint, but had also brought many other positives to Barwon Health.
“Obviously during COVID-19 there was an increase in need for nurses, allied health workers, doctors, right across the board,” Ms Jolly said.
But having people from different countries withdifferentideas,we’reseeingsuchapositive vibe from the new international staff members, an absolutely positive impact.”

Remembering life in a war zone
National Vietnam Veterans Day on Friday, August 18, remembers the men and women who died during the Vietnam War. Independent journalist Jena Carr speaks with Vietnam Veterans Association of Australia’s Geelong and District Sub-Branch president Rieny Nieuwenhof about his time serving the Australian army in Vietnam.
Rieny Nieuwenhof was in his early 20s when he was drafted into the army in 1970 to fight in the Vietnam War, which lasted from 1955 to 1975, with Australia becoming involved in 1962.
“I was nervous because at the time there were lots of stuff in the press about the war in Vietnam,” he said.
“There had been many television broadcasts about alleged atrocities in Vietnam, so that was a worry, and people were being killed.
“At the same time as that fear, I also had a sense of service that I was going to serve my country and so I accepted that I would need to give up those few years under national service.”
RienysaidthatwhenhearrivedatVietnam’s Tan Son Nhat airport near Saigon, now known as Ho Chi Minh City, it was bustling with aeroplanes and was very different from Australia.
“The heat in Australia and the heat in in South Vietnam were completely different and a very high humidity as well,” he said.
“The thing that hits you first when you get off the plane onto the tarmac is the heat and the smells, which we’re not used to here in
Australia so that hits you right in the face.
“The smell was damp, and there was a definite smell of faecal matter in there too.
“One day you’re sitting in an office in
Sydney, and the next minute you’re in a war zone within about eight hours so it’s a bit of a shock to the system.”
Rieny was sent to Nui Dat, the main
headquarters for the First Australian Task Force, to assist the 131 Divisional Locating Battery, and spent January to August 1970 in Vietnam.
“I was with the artillery, and as we got there, we had to take on duties,” he said.
“It was a bit of a shock to arrive there, and then, within a day, we were sitting on top of Nui Dat Hill doing the work we were asked to do.
“It was completely outside anyone’s experience because nearly all the people in my battery were national servicemen, except for the officers and some higher ranked non-commissioned officers.”
Rieny said Vietnam Veteran’s Day on August18wasa“significantcommemoration” for everyone who served in the war and for the Geelong region.
“Vietnam Veteran’s Day is very significant because it’s an opportunity to remember the 523 young Australians who were killed,” he said.
“There were many young men who came from Geelong and the Geelong district who served in the war in Vietnam.
“Geelong is one of the few places where we have an Avenue of Honour dedicated to the Vietnam War which is the space between North Geelong’s Swinburne Street and Princess Highway.”
The Vietnam Veterans Association of Australia’s Geelong and District Sub-Branch will march from Swinburne Street on Friday from 10.30am to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial followed by a service at 11am.

GARDENING AUSTRALIA
ABC
After a winter hibernation, this inspirational and homely series returns with a new season and a fresh bunch of gardening projects and stories. Spring might be just about to reveal its sunny face, but tonight it’s all about embracing the winter chill. Millie Ross builds a heated seed-raising bay and finishes some transition-season jobs before the warmer weather arrives. Clarence Slockee (pictured) creates a living sculpture by cultivating air plants into an old tree stump. Enigmatic host Costa Georgiadis meets Bollywood actress Evelyn Sharma, who is creating a beautiful garden in Queensland’s Chinchilla, and Hannah Moloney demonstrates how to train kale trees.

RESTORATION AUSTRALIA
ABC TV, Sunday, 7.30pm
Sustainability and heritage: can the two approaches to renovating become a perfect match, in a marriage celebrating both nostalgia and forward-thinking?
In tonight’s penultimate episode of this very watchable fifth season, a sweet, old home is in for a shock: couple Rosemary and Rafaele transport their newly acquired Queenslander 800km to an eco village on NSW’s Central Coast. What follows is a complex process to convert the old shack into an energy efficient home for the future that adheres to the village’s strict environmental rules. As the house transforms, question marks hang in the air as sympathetic host Anthony Burke (pictured) follows the optimistic project.

Safer roads for the Surf Coast
By Jena Carr
Surf Coast residents can look forward to safer roads as the council receives funding to develop, design and plan road safety improvements.
Surf Coast Shire Council was among 11 local governments participating in the first stage of the state government’s $210 million Safe Local Roads and Streets Program. Place Making and Environment general manager Chris Pike said council was
“excited” to be selected for the program that will improve the safety of the shire’s roads, intersections and precincts.
“We look forward to finding out more about the program, including the level of funding available, and how it can help make our roads safer for everyone,” he said.
“We plan to work closely with the Transport Accident Commission to develop road safety improvement projects at known high risk locations across our local road network.”
Council will work closely with the
Ollie’s second chance
A Geelong dog has been given a second chance at life thanks to a Werribee vet and anonymous dog blood donor.
Cass knew something wasn’t right with her four-year-old toy cavoodle Ollie after he spent a day at a groomer.
“I was sitting with him, and I could smell blood,” she said.
“I saw he had a wound on his paw, and that’s when I saw his stomach had lots of little dots that were quite red.
“The spots went down his legs, and one of them was a really deep purple bruise on him.”
Cass took Ollie to the Werribee Greencross Vet Hospital vet, which led her to cancel her trip to Europe to care for her furry friend.
Olliewasdiagnosedwithimmune-mediated thrombocytopenia, where the dog’s immune system destroys the body’s platelets (something in the blood that helps prevent bleeding).
“The vet rang me early the day after I admitted Ollie and said he had no red blood
cells and no platelets, which means he was anaemic and needed a blood transfusion,” Cass said.
“They had to call an owner to bring their dog to the hospital to give blood as Ollie needed fresh blood, which I am incredibly thankful for.
“After Ollie had the transfusion, vet Liam called me and sent me a little video where he looked much better. That’s quite a personal touch; they were just so compassionate.
“Compared to what he was then to now, there is a huge difference in his condition and he’s very lucky.”

DepartmentofTransportandPlanning(DTP) and the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) for four years to deliver safer roads across the Shire.
Roads and Road Safety Minister Melissa Horne said fostering “new relationships” between councils, the DTP, and the TAC was important.
“This way they have the tools in place to deliver the safety improvements needed to reduce road trauma on local roads,” she said.
Close to 132,000km of the state’s road
network comprises local roads, with 90 of this year’s 179 fatalities occurring on local roads.
TAC chief executive Tracey Slatter said all the state’s local governments would be introduced to the program later this year, and everyone had a role to play in the safety of Victoria’s roads.
“Councils play a crucial role in identifying their region’s road safety needs and this program will allow us to work together with councils to design and build safer roads for their communities,” she said.

The Friday Revue live in Geelong
By Matt Hewson
ABC Radio Melbourne’s ever-popular Friday
Revue will be broadcast live from the Geelong Arts Centre’s (GAC) Play House next Friday.
Part of the GAC’s Grand Reopening Festival, hosts Jacinta Parsons and Brian Nankervis will present the three-hour show in Geelong to a packed out live audience.
The show also features some of Australia’s best-loved musical talent, with Vika and Linda
Bull, Tim Rogers and Gretta Ray performing onstage.
Nankervissaid though live broadcasts had been a part of the Friday Revue from its very beginning in 2016, they put a different spin on the show.
“Itreallyisquitedifferent;whenyougotosee a show you want a little bit of flair and pizzazz,” he said.
“You respond to the fact that there are people in the house cheering and clapping. It
Winterbourne on tour
On the back of their newly-announced upcoming album, Central Coast duo Winterbourne will bring their blend of harmonies, vintage rock and new age pop to Geelong in September as part of their Velvet, Honey & Wine tour.
Winterbourne made a return to the live arena earlier in 2023 after a lengthy touring hiatus, visiting capital cities around the nation in March and April to showcase singles Long Distance Runner and Forevermore, released in late 2022.
With the release of single Velvet, Honey & Wine in June and Do Nothing just this week, the indie rockers embarked on this latest tour in early August to regional areas up and down the east coast.
Lead singer and guitarist James Draper said while the band were always exploring new sounds, fanswouldrecognisethecoreelements as being Winterbourne.
“I think it’s just natural that you are inspired more by different sounds (at different times),”
Draper said. “And particularly this new single that’s out this week, it’s certainly something new and refreshing and interesting to us.
“But it still makes sense that we made it. It’s full of harmonies and all the stuff we love, just kind of moulded in a new way.
“But it’s certainly different every night; Jordan’s playing a giant recorder, it’s been great fun.”
Guitarist and vocalist Jordan Brady said the duomadeapointofchangingthingsupattheir live shows.
“I feel like people would get bored with – not necessarily, that’s probably a bit too self-deprecating – with us just playing the record,” Brady said.
“I think we would get bored with just playing the songs as they’re supposed to be. Making the live show a completely different experience to listening to one of our records is one of our strengths;it’ssomethingwereallyenjoydoing.”
Winterbourne plays at the Barwon Club on Saturday, September 2.
raises the excitement level, it raises the level of commitment, and it’s wonderful.
“When Jacinta and I are in the studio it’s just us, and even though there’s an audience who are listening we tend to chat a little bit more freely.
“I think there’s going to be 700 people there, so it’s a bit more pressure; it’s a bit more performative.”
Nankervis said it was important to strike a balancebetweentheaudiencememberspresent
at the venue and listeners out in radioland.
“The audience in the theatre get to see the producers running out to hand us bits of paper, us talking during a song to work out what we’re going to do next, the stuff you normally don’t see, obviously,” he said.
“But there’s also thousands of people listening, and you don’t want the people at home feeling left out, or not as important.
“Soit’satrickybalance, butit’sreallyexciting and challenging, and good for us, I think.”

Honda sets out its SUV future
By Derek Ogden, Marque Motoring
Hondahasshownitshandforthefuturewitha
deft shuffle of its SUVs, including the addition of a new model, the ZR-V, slotting in between the present HR-V and CR-V.
While the newcomer is different, it does go somewhat to cramping the style of its older siblings. However, Honda assures us that the coming of the all-new CR-V in 2024, as a bigger, more spacious model than at present, will resolve the situation.
“The Honda ZR-V is Honda Australia’s first, brand-new core model to be introduced in Australia in 20 years and uses an enhanced version of Honda’s global architecture,” said Honda Australia director Carolyn McMahon.
The Civic-based ZR-V comes in three petrol-only grades and a range-topping petrol / electric hybrid. Prices start at $40,200 for the VTi X with the hybrid e:HEV LX costing $54,900.OntestwastheZR-VVTiLat$43,200.
All prices are drive-away.
Standard equipment on the base model includes premium cloth upholstery, a 9-inch infotainment touch-screen, eight-speaker sound system, wireless Apple CarPlay, wired Android Auto, dual-zone climate control, eight-speaker sound system, 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster, auto-dimming rear-view mirror,11airbags,17-inchwheels,rain-sensing wipers and parking sensors front and back.
In contrast, the VTi L takes on leatherette upholstery, heated front seats, 18-inch alloys, heateddoormirrors,hands-freepowertailgate, rear privacy glass, combination LED tail-lights and metal paddle shifts.
All ZR-Vs come under Honda’s five-year unlimited kilometre warranty, with 24/7 roadside assist. Service intervals are 12 months or 10,000 kilometres and capped at $199 per visit.
The new ZR-V is an early arrival before its time. (Pictures: Supplied)
grille shows off why black is the new chrome, cropping up in all classes of automobile, from bargain basement compacts to high-end aristocrats and anything in between – a ZR-V, for example.
By contrast, the headlamps flanking the front each share a home with daytime running lights and dynamic direction indicators under a single sleek clear plastic ‘roof’.
InprofiletheSUVisneithertootallnortoo small – a genuine design Goldilocks – and leads to a rear as neat and tidy as a tucked-in shirt. Eighteen-inch alloy wheels are a step up from the entry-level 17s.
Interior
Seating is firm and could give rise to complaints on long journeys. Head and legroom are excellent. However, in the back the high-set floor leaves little room for toes under the front seats.
Out back there’s also a fold-down armrest with cup holders, double USB-C charge points and bottle nest. ISOFIX points are fixedfortheoutboardedgesoftherearbench.
Access to the 380 litres of boot space comes viaapowertailgateoperatedfromanexternal switch,orwithagentle‘kick’,SamKerr-style, to the rear bumper. Fold the 60 / 40 seat backs and 1312 litres becomes available.
The under-floor comes in two parts and can be used to separate cargo. There’s room only for a space saver spare wheel.
Honda has hooked in to the floating centre console with decent-size cubby below.
Deep cup holders are situated ahead of the gearshift switch. Door slots will take 700 ml bottles.
Infotainment

Engines / transmissions
The Honda ZR-V VTi L relies on a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine mated with a CVT automatic transmission driving the front wheels.

Note: These prices are drive-away.
Maximum power of 131kW comes up at 6000 rpm; top torque of 240 Nm between 1700 and 4500 rpm, making for flexible performance from go to whoa.
Safety
The Honda ZR-V leads the class in passive safety with 11 airbags, including a front-centre and driver’s knee airbag.
Active safety includes autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, adaptive cruise control with low-speedfollow,driverattentionmonitoring, lane-keep assist, traffic jam assist, traffic sign recognition, front and rear parking sensors, plus tyre pressure monitoring.
Driving
With240Nmoftorqueontapfromalow1700 revs well managed by the CVT tuning, the ZR-V pulls away with little fuss. Acceleration into a motorway stream of traffic is likewise. Engine, wind and road noise are all-but absent, except in the last case on course surfaces.
Ride and handling are competent thanks to a well-tuned suspension. Town work on test was as expected for a light vehicle, while body roll on fast bends was minimised and road blemishes ironed out with ease.
As a performer, of the three drive modes, Normal is, well normal, for day-to-day city traffic, while Eco saves fuel but obviously dumbs down the driving experience. Sport makesthebestoftheturboforatautresponse to right-foot input.
Honda puts a combined urban / highway fuel consumption of 7.2 litres per 100 kilometres on the ZV-R petrol vehicle. On test the VTi L came up with 9 litres per 100 kilometresinthecityandaslowas5litresper 100 kilometres on the open road.
Driver’s view all round is mostly good but is let down by limited rear-window glass. There’s a neat lock-as-you-walk-away form the vehicle when you have your hands full.
Summary
As a long-time possessor of a self-propelled Honda lawnmower and large house block I have been pleasantly surprised with the machine’s performance and reliability. It makes me wonder if the same could be applied to the company’s new SUV down the track.

ABL pulls out of Waurn Ponds
Geelong Korea’s short involvement in the Australian Baseball League (ABL) is officially over.
Geelong Korea began competing in the ABL in the 2018-19 season. It played home games at Waurn Ponds and was made up of professional South Korean players.
However, Baseball Australia confirmed that the team would be involved in the 2023-24 season.
The team received support from the City of Greater Geelong and the state government.
“This is a really disappointing decision for the club, its players, supporters and the wider community of Geelong,” Geelong mayor Trent Sullivan said.
“Geelong Korea is a unique club and one that bore the brunt of the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I would have liked to see the club given more time and support to re-establish in the ABL, which would help grow the sport locally and capitalise on its international potential.”
In its three seasons competing in the ABL,
Geelong Korea team won 31 games and lost 89.
Baseball Australia chief executive Glenn Williams said the decision was reached through thoughtful consideration, but didn’t giveanyclearreasononwhytheteamhadbeen axed.
“While this is a tough decision and we are certainly sad to see Geelong Korea leave the Australian Baseball League, the decision has been made following in-depth consultation with all parties, and in the best interest of the Australian Baseball League, fellow teams,

It was the final match of the home and away season for most of Tennis Geelong’s Junior and Senior pennants this week and while many teams were fighting for finals positions, four teams in Section 4 Boys were no exception.
WhileBarwonHeadswascomfortablyahead of the competition and Lara likely to finish second, sitting six points ahead of third placed Surfcoast Jan Juc, there were only two points separating Juc, Grovedale, Wandana Heights and Waurn Ponds and only two spots available to the four teams.
Surfcoast Jan Juc guaranteed itself a finals spotwhenitwonagainstadepletedLeopoldsix sets to love.
Leopold, with a player short, played well pushing Juc in four sets but couldn’t get over the line and get the team on the board.

While excited by the win, they were anxious in waiting on results of other matches to determine their fate next week.
Wandana Heights also kept in contention with a hard fought 4-2 win over Lara.
Finn Meyers, Spencer Durno and Hugh MaddenputtheHeightsaheadwith6-4,6-5,6-4 wins in their singles and Durno and Madden
put the result beyond doubt when they took the second doubles 6-1.
The final match of the round saw Geelong Lawn host Grovedale. The home team’s Flynn Matthews and Sam Patterson lead the way winning their singles 6-1 and 6-5 and teaming up in the doubles for a 6-3 win.
With Isaac Alexander getting over the line in the fourth singles, Lawn took the win four sets to two, and helped shape the final four.

Mr Williams thanked the state government and City of Greater Geelong for their support of the baseball community.
“For an international team located in Australia it hasn’t been easy,” he said.
“The support shown by the Victorian government and Geelong City Council of GK, and baseball more broadly, has been unwavering. We are all grateful for the support shown.”
Not done with yet: Scott
Geelong coach Chris Scott is remaining an “optimist” and believes his side can keep its premiership defence alive by qualifying for finals.
The Cats’ top-eight hopes received another blow on Friday night when they went down to Collingwood by eight points.
Geelong (10-1-10) needs to win both remaining games against the Saints and Western Bulldogs to avoid missing the finals for the first time since 2015.
Even if they win both games, it is not guaranteed the Cats will be safe and the team that ended 2022 by winning 16 straight could finish this round as low as 12th.
“I think we can play better, no doubt about that,” Scott said.
“But two games to go, do I think we can win them? Yep.
“We’ve got two games to go, and we think we can play well enough to beat any team in the comp when we play our best.
“We can play well enough to win the last two games and play in the finals. I’m an optimist.”
Against Collingwood, Jeremy Cameron threatened to swing the game back in the Cats’ favour, incredibly kicking his fifth and sixth goals of the match while standing completely out of bounds as the umpires inexplicably failed to blow the whistle.
Scott claimed he hadn’t seen the replay of Cameron’s last-quarter goal when he clearly kicked the ball from outside the boundary.
“I actually didn’t see it. People that know the game well say that it wasn’t outside the boundary,” Scott said. Collingwood coach Craig McRae felt the umpires clearly got it wrong.
“We make mistakes, I make plenty,” he said.

Barwon Heads’ 56-point round 14 win against Drysdale is now a distant memory.
Drysdale is now in better form than the Seagulls in what looms as an evenly matched qualifying final.
The Hawks brushed aside Geelong Amateur with Mitch O’Dowd best afield while James
Breust booted four majors.
Breust (34 goals) and Tom Ruggles (58) form a potent forward line leading into finals.
Barwon Heads prevailed by 61 points against Newcomb with Mitch Phelps bobbing up to boot five goals.
The Seagulls are likely to regain several key players for their qualifying final.
Newcomb skipper Jack Duke was excellent with four goals.
Ocean Grove finished the season on a high with its fifth win of the season.

Four teams battle for finals berths
Four Geelong Football League sides sitting third to sixth on the ladder are vying for three finals spots.
Newtown & Chilwell, South Barwon, Leopold and St Joseph’s are all on 11 wins with two rounds remaining.
Not only are they fighting for a finals spot, they are all still in the hunt for third place and the double chance that goes with it.
South Barwon has the toughest assignment, facing St Mary’s (first) and Colac (second).
Newtown & Chilwell should defeat Lara this week and then square off against Leopold, whichshouldbeatStAlbans.StJoseph’shaveSt Mary’s and Geelong West.
South Barwon had to work super hard to get over a spirited Grovedale in round 16.
Grovedaleledbyninepointsatthree-quarter time, but a five-goal final term sealed the win withskipperMattCaldowinfineform, booting four goals.
Ryan Abbott had 42 hitouts for Grovedale and Will Ford had 31 disposals.
St Joseph’s also had to dig deep to dispose of Bell Park by 18 points.
James (43 possessions) and Alex Hickey (31)
had the ball on a string while Keegan Gray had 27 touches and Darcy Brown 38 hitouts and eight tackles for the Dragons.
After not winning a game for four years, St Albans made two on the trot.
The Supersaints defeated North Shore by two points with Ben Miller and Nathan Cole firing while Jordan Lyons booted four goals.
The Seagulls were well served by Lachlan Hayes’ 23 disposals and Joel Edwards’ four goals.
Colac prevailed over Newtown & Chilwell in horrendous conditions that made scoring difficult.
Kody Spokes’ 24 touches ignited Colac’s charge and Matthew Boag had the most possessions on the ground with 37 for the Eagles.
St Mary’s was far too good for Lara, winning by 64 points.
Scott Selwood racked up 29 touches and star forward Sam Dobson booted six goals in the win while Connor Thar was prolific for Lara with 36 disposals, 21 of them contested.
Leopold did what it needed to do with a 57-point win against Geelong West.
Marcus Thompson was his usual busy self with 41 possessions and Trent West had 66 hitouts.
Not to be outdone, David Handley racked up 41 touches for the Giants and Jamieson Ballantyne 31.

24 points thanks to ruckman Ed Dayman continuing his splendid form and three goals from Jye Walker.
Both clubs will now have the offseason to improve their lists.
Torquay thrashed Portarlington by 138 points and will sit this week out as a reward for finishing on top of the ladder.
Lucas Anderson took his goal haul to 74 with a haul of seven while four players booted three each.
Portarlington was winless for the season, but has made massive strides forward.
Seven in row for rampaging East Geelong
East Geelong stretched its winning streak to seven after a ruthless 90-point win against Werribee Centrals in the penultimate round of Geelong & District Football League on Saturday, August 12.
The Eagles can still grab third spot if they defeat Belmont this weekend and Centrals defeats Inverleigh.
The most likely scenario is an elimination final match-up against Bannockburn.
Zac Smith was on a goal-kicking rampage on Saturday with nine to take his tally to 65 this season while Caleb Lowndes chipped in with five and Midfielder Billy Andrew was damaging.
Bell Post Hill will finish in second spot after a 66-point win against Belmont. WillFordbootedsevenforthePanthers to move to 61 for the season while Jett HerrmannandMatthewJamesweregreat contributors.
Bell Post Hill will meet either East Geelong or Inverleigh in a qualifying final.
Inverleigh fine-tuned its game with an 88-point win against North Geelong.
Adam Donohue (six goals) and Casey Meehan (four) were on target up forward.
North Geelong was goalless during the first half, but Jacsen Jewell bobbed up to boot three goals in the second to add some respectability to the score.
Winchelsea did what it needed to do by beating Geelong West, but needed an upset in the Corio vs Bannockburn game to stay in the finals race.
With Banno winning comfortably, that’s the season done for the Blues.
Four goals each to Edward Smith and Leigh Ellis gave the Blues a nine-goal win.
Bannockburn cemented its finals spot with a 62-point win against Corio.
The Tigers cannot finish any higher than fifth, but with Callum Hetherington (six goals) in fine form, could do some damage.
Joel Bennett (four goals) continues to be a shining light for the Magpies and a return of 39 goals this season is a superb effort.
Thomson stayed in top spot after a 147-point triumph over Anakie.
BrentJacqueskickedeightfortheTigers while Mitch Hodgson and Jed Hanneysee contributed four each.
Thomson meets second placed Bell Post Hill this week to decide top spot. The Tigers are a game and 14.27 percent ahead so the Panthers would need to win reasonably comfortably to grab the minor premiership.
