PROBUS ASSOCIATION OF VICTORIA INC
Reg No: A0009835HABN: 51 370 595 374
The activities of PAV effectively commenced on 21st November 1984 when representatives of two Probus Clubs, Dromana Men’s and the Frankston, sponsored a “handshake” meeting of 11 Probus Clubs residing in the Southern suburbs of Melbourne, with the objective of forming an association. Delegates attending that November meeting agreed to form an Association, which became known as the Victorian Association of Probus Clubs South-East Region.
In 1986 the association became incorporated and added Inc. to its name.
The South- East Region was ultimately removed from the name in 1995 and became simply the Probus Association Of Victoria Inc.(PAV).
The activities now extend to all Victorian Probus Clubs currently affiliated with PAV.
A great year for clubs
The President
WITH the year almost over, we can reflect on the achievements of the first year of my presidency and the promised new and vibrant committee.
Changes to the Constitution, which were passed at the August Delegates’ Meeting, mean for PAV, this Probus year will run for a few extra months, our AGM now in line with all Probus Clubs and being held in March. One great addition to our committee, and someone many clubs are now familiar with, is our Secretary, Fran McLean.

Fran has worked hard this year, getting databases up to date and, being the first point of contact with clubs, she has built a rapport with many presidents, secretaries and delegates of PAV affiliated clubs. Fran is a great asset to the PAV Committee.
If you’ve had dealings with her by phone or email during the year, please make yourselves known to her at the next Delegates’ Meeting. Our Vice President, Cheryl Hunt, had a busy year organising the Friendship Day at the Races.
As we chose the Ballarat Turf Club as our venue this year, it was a challenge to organise the day from afar but Cheryl did a great job. Webmaster Ernie Brigham, another valued member of the PAV Committee, put together a presentation offering great advice to clubs.
This was shown at a Delegates’ Meeting earlier in the year and copies have since been requested and distributed to many clubs in Victoria.
When I took over as President, it was my aim to secure a committee comprising members with different skills, so that we always have someone to deal with whatever came our way.
In addition to the skill set, I hoped for members who could work together, share the challenges in a professional manner but be able to relax and enjoy each other’s company.
We’ve achieved that and we all work well to the common good of PAV. Going forward, our next major function will be the 40th Anniversary of PAV in 2024.
As I mentioned in my last President’s Report, there are already ideas floating around the committee table but we would love affiliated clubs to be involved. If your club would like to be involved in some of the organisation of the 40th Anniversary of PAV, please give Fran a call or send her an email.
Christmas will almost be upon us by the time you read this edition of the Probian, so I wish you all a wonderful festive season and a happy and safe New Year.
Yours in friendship
Thérèse (Tess) Robinson President Probus Association of Victoria Inc.

ON behalf of the residents of Rochester, I would like to sincerely thank all PAV members for their continued fellowship and financial support since the floods devastated our town last October.
In March 2023 White Hills
President of PAV, Tess Robinson - also a Clocktower member - presented Frank Hargraves with a plaque to celebrate his milestone 100th birthday.
ONE hundred iced cupcakes greeted Ringwood Clocktower Probus members as part of surprise celebration to mark the 100th birthday of one of its members, Frank Hargraves.
Born in 1923 in Yorkshire Frank worked as an engineer for 46 years at the same firm and served as a naval engineer for four years during the Second World War. In 1978 he was transferred to Australia by his company.
The meeting room was decorated with photos of Frank and his family and his fellow Probus members, framed newspaper articles outlining significant events from 1923 and 1978.
The highlight of the meeting was the presentation of gifts in the form of two mounted original coins from 1923 celebratory plaques and a 100-year birthday card.
President of PAV Tess Robinson, also a Clocktower member, presented Frank with a plaque to celebrate his milestone birthday. In his response, Frank - who joined Probus in 2012 - said it was wonderful being a member of Clocktower Probus and was completely overwhelmed by the occasion.
The celebration was organised by Beth Oswald, a member of the club’s committee.
Probus supported Raglan Street Jazz with a concert to raise funds for Rochester Elmore Community Health. It was a wonderful social afternoon with enjoyment for all; another concert is planned for October . Like White Hills, there have been many other Probus Clubs who have made a contribution by visiting our Sports Museum and supporting other business outlets in Rochester. Your visits have made a profound difference in our endeavour to return to some type of normality.
When planning future trips or just passing through, please call again as you will all be made very welcome.

Parktone steps back in time
CONTINUED FROM FRONT COVER
ON 20 April 2023, 37 members of Parktone Probus Club visited Westgarthtown, an 1850s German Immigrant settlement, 16km north of Melbourne.
We were met by John, our guide, at the Ziebell Farmhouse in amongst suburbia. John was very knowledgeable about how the immigrants arrived in Australia, formed a community and began dairy and subsistence farming. The milk was used by the families and some processed locally which then became the PURA milk factory. Men women and children travelled from Hamburg to Melbourne aboard the Pribislaw which took six months.
The Ziebell family built a school, church, farmhouse, barns and stables from the local bluestone. The buildings and fence walls still stand today and are classified by the National Trust. The lives of the families in the settlement was brought to life by a wonderful hands on experience given by John, a member of The Friends of Westgarthtown. We were provided with a beautiful morning tea by The Friends of Westgarthtown in the dining room of the Ziebell’s Farmhouse.
Plenty of time to explore the property and admire the buildings and gardens.
Our next stop was a visit to Pentridge
Maximum Security Prison in Coburg (established 1851-1997).
The building was also built of Bluestone with an impressive entrance and Gardens. The site is part historic and new shopping centre/cinema comples but still maintaining the original façade. We enjoyed lunch at one of the various restaurants/ cafes of choice. Time to roam the gardens, visit the B and the notorious H division cells.
Everyone was accounted for as we boarded our bus for our return to Mordialloc. What a great day was had by all members.
Centenarian celebration: Iris now a life member
THE Combined Probus Club of Wheelers Hill May 2023 general meeting began with a very special presentation to Iris Wynter celebrating her 100th birthday (12 May).
President Rhonda Murphy presented Iris with the club’s first life membership certificate and Jenny Wilshier, the welfare officer, presented her with flowers and a card signed by the members. Iris has seen many changes to our world. Her friendship along with her zest for life, has been inspirational for all our members.
Iris is a founding member of the club in 2002 and is still living at home. During her time with the club, Iris has been and still is involved in many of the club’s activities, including walking, gardening, happy hours, outings and many other activities. Members enjoyed a special celebratory birthday cake at morning tea and Iris was overwhelmed, but really appreciated the celebrations.

Four days of exploration
THE Echuca-Moama Twin Rivers Probus Club recently visited the Swan Hill region for a four-day visit.
Event organisers Bluey and Leonie Charman organised activities each day in and around Swan Hill and attendees were delighted with what they were able to accomplish in their short time away.
The first evening in the caravan park we were joined by three members of the Castle Donnington Probus Club - Kevin, Joan and Mary. Kevin entertained the club with his guitar playing and singing. What a fun night everyone had.
On the Tuesday members visited the
Lavender Farm followed by a delicious Devonshire morning tea. After lunch the women headed to Dollytown Abbey house in Nyah where Ms Lucy Dacey’s backyard shed housed a collection of over 2000 dolls of all shapes and sizes. Ms Dacey explained that she had been collecting dolls for over 25 years beginning when she was caring for her granddaughter.
Meanwhile the men on the trip preferred a visit to Ron Dehne’s Ford Tractor museum. Ron has amassed a collection of over 120 Ford Tractors In a private vintage collection that’s one of the largest in the world.
No trip to Swan Hill is complete without a visit to the Pioneer Settlement and it didn’t disappoint. The light show depicting the Legend of the Mallee was the highlight of the evening.
On the return home members visited the Home of the Catalina in Lake Boga. The Lions Club of Lake Boga restored the Catalina A24-30 and the original secret communication bunker as a commemoration to the service men and women who served at No1 Flying Boat Repair Depot Lake Boga, Victoria from 1942 to 1947.
The museum holds more than 500
artefacts relating to Lake Boga’s proud history associated with WWII, including the historic Catalina Flying Boat and a range of wartime treasures that have been preserved for future generations.
Each six months the Echuca Moama Twin Rivers Probus Club organise a caravan/cabin trip and over the years members have really enjoyed these events.
Special thanks to Bluey and Leonie Charman for organising the spring caravan/ cabin trip - our club is very appreciative of the time and effort involved in planning these types of activities.

Joyful milestone celebration
WHAT an enjoyable time was had by all who attended the Probus Club of Upper Yarra’s 40th anniversary celebration lunch at Killara Estate, Sunnyside Road, Seville East on Wednesday, August 23rd, 2023.
A big thank-you goes to Kev and staff at Killara for being so helpful and amenable in making our event a success. The lunch was an Italian menu beginning with antipasto platters, then arancini and pasta with salad. It was delicious.
A highlight of the day was having local vocalist Anthony Gerace perform for us. He has a beautiful voice and many others agree if the queue to buy his CD was anything to go by.
Our club was pleased the State Member for Eildon, Cindy McLeish MP and the Federal Member for Casey, Aaron Violi MP were able to attend our celebration. Aaron presented our club president Ted Clarke with a certificate by PSPL in recognition of our club achieving their 40-year anniversary. Not only did our president Ted Clarke join our secretary Janeen Nation to cut the chocolate anniversary cake, he also baked and decorated the cake. Ted also baked a lovely Victoria Sponge for us to share. Well done, Ted.
Finally, to all our special guests, current and past members of the Probus Club of Upper Yarra thank you for attending our anniversary lunch and making the day such a success. Not a lot of Probus clubs make it to 40 years so we can all be very proud that our club has achieved this milestone.
I hope everyone had a bit of fun with their favour bags. I know I had fun researching the trivia andjokes in them.

Revved up for classic display
MELBOURNE Bearbrass Probus members spent a morning drooling over billionnaire Lindsay Fox’s amazing collection of classic European cars at his Docklands car museum.
Our party’s ages ranged from seven (one member’s grandson) to 83.
We admired cars ranging from rare Ferraris to unique Rolls Royce and Mercedes sedans, the oldest from 1923. The collection is steeped in history, one-off prototypes, and cars that dreams are made of. Each is worth $1m-6m.
How Lindsay Fox sourced these beauties from all over the world beggars the imagination. Some were owned by royalty, Stirling Moss, German ambassador Von
Ribbentrop, Ringo Starr and Bing Crosby.
Two expert museum guides took us in hand, telling how each car reflects an era and each car has its unique pedigree.
Lindsay has generously donated all the cars to a charitable trust so no matter what happens within his family, the collection will not be affected.
The setting itself is magnificent - a very old but beautifully built warehouse that has served innumerable purposes during its long history - including the country’s Mint.
Our tour brought out the best Probus can offer members - history, great experience, friendship and delight.

THE Trafalgar and District members had a fashion day provided by two ladies from U&I Designs who visited with their stunning range of fashions and we had the hall filled with around 90 members and visitors who were delighted with the fantastic garments. We spread the news of the event around the district and many locals attended and some have returned as visitors to our general meetings and we have high hopes of them becoming members.
Donna and Colleen from U&I Designs were kept frantically busy helping out with sizes and colours. The “models” from our club had a lot of fun too - wearing their four chosen outfits with smiles and aplomb. A great success all round.
Friendly, active and ready to welcome new faces
THE Probus Club of White Hills continues to offer a range of interests and activities which are implemented to keep members active, interested and entertained in as many different settings as possible. From catered lunches in the clubrooms to Christmas in July at the Bendigo Pottery, coffee-cake-and-chatter at many eateries around Bendigo, Capital Theatre, the Art Gallery, Star Cinema in Eaglehawk, Morning Melodies, Walking, Cycling, the annual Mystery Trip and so many more, members are able to choose an activity that best suits their age and ability.
Other members are happy and fulfilled by attending on regular meeting days, to ‘catch up’ with their friends, enjoy a ‘cuppa and a chat, to listen to an interesting speaker, then come together to share lunch. Such is the level of interest in the club that Alan Taylor reached his 10 years of membership in July; followed in August by Valda Butler with 25 years of fun and friendship. Alan and Valda were presented with a certificate to mark the occasion.
The Star of the Month Award which began in 2022 has proved very popular with the latest Stars being Frank Holland, Margaret Arnold and Alan Taylor. Congratulations to members new and old, and to those Stars of the Month who are all contributing to the club in their own individual ways.
One recent activity was the visit to the new Bendigo Law Courts for a guided tour. The two guides gave detailed information about the workings of each of the courts visited, plus the stories behind the art work and installations on the four floors.
A very impressive building, and well worth a visit.
Another interesting outing was the visit to the Bendigo Woodturners Clubrooms, where members were able to see first hand how so many items can be made from a simple piece of wood. The Woodturners were only too happy to demonstrate their craft and pass to on the knowledge of their equipment from the lathe to the intricacies of the Scroll Saw. There were also many items on display which had been made by the Woodturners.
There’s no need to stay at home or to be lonely … the Probus Club of White Hills is friendly, active and very ready to welcome new members. Come join us for friendship, fellowship and fun!

The backroom boys and girls
PRIOR to the East Malvern Combined Probus Club monthly general meeting the backroom boys and girls get to work.
Everyone involved has made an effort to ensure they present the best value and fun activities they can think of for the members. Then they create lists of these activities.
Each activity has a code allocated to assist with smooth payment - if requiredthough the Square system. There’s more work to be done before we can say what’s next. The Square system must be checked to see if the latest software has been installed.
The day of the general meeting will see the committee plus workers arrive early to set out the chairs, check the audio/visual system is working, prepare the committee table, set up and test the payment system is working. Let’s not forget the setup for morning tea.
The club noticeboard has been assembled with - the lastest copy of the minutes, photos from outings and notices from club sponsors. This is put on display in the foyer where all members can view the board.
So far this year this group of hard working members have presented to members to participate in - 25 events. Dine outs, day trips, regular Book Club meetings, last Friday of the month Coffee and Cake, plus Monday morning walking group.
After the meeting everyone chips in to help pack up the chairs and tables.
All is put away until next month when we start all over again.

Club embraces footy finals spirit for meeting
THE September general meeting at the East Malvern Combined Probus Club Inc is a fun and festive event, especially with the AFL football finals happening in Melbourne.
Dressing in their teams’ colours and enjoying football-themed morning tea created a great atmosphere for all members. President Ernie Brigham’s Random Football Comp was a creative and engaging way to keep members involved and excited.
And the winner and first recipient of our club’s Perpetual Footy Tipping trophy is John McBeth. The trophy is to be returned to the committee before the announcement of next year’s winner.
To help celebrate the members s were treated to hot pies and footy frankfurts at morning teatime, this added to the footy atmosphere.
Earlier in 2023 president Ernie Brigham invented a football competition called The Random Football Comp.
All club members were automatically entered into the competition free of charge, and all they needed to do was their scores each week. Each week, a player is assigned a randomly selected football team, and if that team wins, the player earns 1 point. Every fourth week, a player can earn five points for a win, which helps those lower on the leaderboard
catch up. The leaderboard was published to all members each week.
The tipping competition is managed by The Random Footy Comp and is not limited to AFL but can also be used for NRL and soccer.
Ernie Brigham, president of East Malvern Combined Probus Club Inc, is willing to provide the program for free to

AS we congregated on the upper level at Southern Cross Station, members of the East Malvern Combined Probus Club Inc pondered where are we going and will we like the restaurant chosen for lunch. Our outings representative arrived, and she was greeted by enthusiastic members, all waiting for the announcement.
Altona was our destination, this turned out to be a great destination as many of the club members had not visited this part of Melbourne for some time. Upon arrival at the Altona Station, we found ourselves in the middle of a shopping strip that went all the way to the beach. We ambled along the strip observing the shop windows and taking in the sea air. A lane way was decorated by two murals depicting the history of the area. A bit further along we entered the beach precinct which was attractive with tall old Moreton Bay fig trees and a great pedestrian walk along the foreshore.
The old Altona pier is currently being replaced with a more stable and modern pier.
After investigating the beach precinct, we wandered back along the shopping strip on the opposite side providing us with a different view of the strip.
A little further down we arrived at our lunch restaurant where the staff were waiting for us. The menu was mainly Italian fare including pizza. We all enjoyed our meals with wine or soft drink. An excellent choice by our outings coordinator.
Some of the members took the opportunity to do a little shopping on our
stroll back to the station. Back at Altona station a happy group from the East Malvern Combined Probus Club Inc chatted about what a good day they had out.
I took the opportunity to take some photos of the industrial area around the train line.
We are all waiting for our next Mystery train ride and lunch date to be announced so we can all have another fun day out.
East Malvern Combined Probus Club Inc meets on the first Wednesday of the month at Serrell St Uniting Church. Further inquiries can be made by calling 0488 419 314.

Sipping and searching
MELBOURNE Bearbrass Probus is a club that takes its wines seriously. It runs monthly tasting sessions for members on wines including French, Spanish, Italian and of course Australian.
Our chief connoisseurs are all on extended overseas holidays so member Michael, nicknamed Spike, took over with a session requiring us to blind taste and name the state-of-origin of six wines. Spike, although a retired information-technology executive, also enjoys bus driving for the human-interest he encounters on bus trips in most Eastern States.
Scores on his quiz ranged from an amazing four to a more typical one or two. Bottles typically sell for $25-30 and the wine group funds typically stretch to hors d’oevres and cheese plates as well. Spike shops for good wine deals at
CostCo and Dan Murphy.
While some of his state selections were colorful, such as NSW’s Cowpunk Pinot Noir from Tumbarumba, he met his Waterloo – should that be “Wineroo” in trying in Melbourne to buy a bottle sourced from Queensland.
“I couldn’t find a shop stocking Queensland wines anywhere,” he grouched. “I recently drank wine at the Sirromet winery at Mount Cotton, Qld, and have visited many wineries on the Granite Belt around Stanthorpe. I guess the Queenslanders must drink all the wine bottled there.”
His tasting group found one mystery glass each, with a brownish fluid. “It’s Bundy (Bundaberg Rum) and Coke,” he told the mystified drinkers. “What could be more Queensland than that?”
Wild world adventure
Pakenham East Probus Club
ON Wednesday 6 September, which was a beautiful sunny and warm day, 27 members from the Pakenham East Probus Club visited Gumbuya World at Tynong, where on arrival we wandered up to the Conference Room and enjoyed morning tea, consisting of a hot drink of your choice followed by delicious scones, jam and cream.
While we were partaking of this, we were introduced to some wildlife inhabitants of the park and given the opportunity to hold or pat these animals.
Some very brave members were quite happy to hold the python, while others enjoyed patting the rabbit and admiring the tawny frogmouth that was hand-reared.
Then we went for a walk and a train ride around the park. Unfortunately the train “derailed” and we had to leave the train in an orderly fashion. Some members were allowed to stay on the train while it was returned to the road. Other members were then permitted to board the train and complete a circuit of the park.
Then it was time for lunch. We returned to the conference room for lunch which
consisted of fish ‘n’ chips or soup which was most enjoyable. After lunch we were enthralled by the birds in flight: an eclectus parrot called Coby, a macaw, Sirus the tawny frogmouth, and Otis the Southern American yellow-faced parrot. Otis was incredibly talented; he was able to count to 10 and sing the song, ‘How much is that Doggie in the Window?’
He also exhibited his operatic talents, singing opera with his trainer.
A wonderful day was had by all, then it was time to travel home.

Great outing
MOUNT Elephant Derrinallum is a well known name to most locals.
We had 36 Cobden and Camperdown Probus Club members visit this volcanic site recently where most were surprised at the facilities with a State of the Art information centre, and also with many members being their first visit to the Mount. Mount Elephant community management secretary Leslie Brown gave a vert informative PowerPoint display with photos and information on the history of the area. In 2000 Mount Elephant became available for sale - the local community rallied and formed a partnership with Trust For Nature and purchased the Mount.
Two bushfires in 1944 and 1977 destroyed any vegetation, and rabbits and weeds were causing many environmental problems.
Over the past years many trees and
grasses have been planted annually for the restoration and vegetation of this site and welcoming back the bird life and even some wallabies. The Mount Elephant Centre was built with a bequest from local residents Jack and Millie Borbidge — and along with funds from the State Government and Corangamite Shire and the local donations they opened in 2016.
This great meeting place is opened to special interest groups - to schools and community groups, and visitors are always welcome to access this area.
At the base of the Mount you can follow The Borbidge Walk Track leading to the crater. For the avid walkers it will take approximately one-and-a-half hours to complete. A short bus tour to the Banksia Orchard and Deep Lake then onto the Mount Elephant Hotel for a scrumptious lunch with plenty of laughter and chatter was had by all.
Knoxfield happenings
HAPPY times ahead for all our members as we busily organise some fun days outings and more interesting guest speakers for our remaining meetings as the year moves closer to the festive season.
The Xmas in July luncheon held at the Sandown Greyhound Racetrack was a huge success as over 40 members attended and enjoyed their three course lunch fare of turkey and ham with assorted vegetables, Christmas pudding and trimmings for dessert and I am told the soup starter course was delicious. Christmas decorations on the tables made it a fun filled Christmas atmosphere.
At a recent meeting we had two ladies from O’Shannessey’s Quality Tours company as our guest speakers. They told us all about the family company beginnings, with a slide show, and nowadays 30 years later it is a large company with many touring buses and large staff. They discussed the tours available and all the inclusive tours for mature travellers both Australia wide and now internationally. We were given a tour brochure to see how many and varied tours they now provide. Really interesting and we have members who have enjoyed their tours and confirmed how much they enjoyed the experience.
A lucky member was given a chance
The happy winner.
to win a voucher towards a tour of their choice as well as a travel bag and it was won by Jennifer Hannam, a longtime member and former secretary to our club for 10 years, so everyone (as well as Jennifer) was thrilled by her win.
Next bus trip is a guided tour of the museum at Moorabbin Airport and then on to the DFO at Moorabbin to do some retail therapy and lunch. Good chance to do some early Christmas shopping.
Coming up also is a High Tea at the Zest Restaurant at the Waverley TAFE campus and this is a big favourite for all our members and visitors.
Dining Club is so popular now and have booked ahead for our gourmet members to enjoy Indian fare at Boronia then Greek at Ferntree Gully and then Japanese at Wantirna. Christmas dining will be at the Ferntree Gully Hotel in December. Makes my mouth water...
So much to do and such fun ahead so if you would like to join us just call Jo, our membership officer on 0414 914 091.

Trip of a lifetime to Uluru
BELINDA Slattery of Group Link Travel, personally escorted a combined Probus trip to Central Australia in August, 2023.
Members from Rosanna Ladies Probus, St Kilda Probus, Warringal Heidelberg
Combined Probus, and Templestowe
Central Probus Club along with others were fortunate to be ‘cared for’ on this tour.
The trip was planned to perfection from the door to door, luxurious corporate pick-up ride to the airport, to the company owned coach waiting for us at the Adelaide Airport. Everything was thought of: comfy slippers, sweet treats, bottles of water, a personalised goodie bag for the first day’s breakfast; as well as puzzles, and books and magazines to occupy us on the road journey to Port Augusta and beyond. This attention to detail was thoughtful, much appreciated and added ‘something special’ to our shared journey.
In no particular order, the highlights of the trip included:
· Being shown around Coober Pedy, venturing into the underground churches and museum; and the highlight was the evening excursion to the ‘Breakaways’.
· The several nights we bore witness to sunsets over Uluru and Kata-Tjuta with the magnificent play of colours over the landscape as the sun went down. Hauntingly beautiful. The night of the Sounds of Silence dinner is a must and not to be missed. Unsure of what to expect, everyone in the group was overwhelmed by the simple, stunning natural beauty of our country. Dining ‘al fresco’ has never been better, nor being serenaded by a didgeridoo player!
· The scenic flights over Uluru and KataTjuta were an optional extra that everyone decided to experience. All in the group managed to get seats on a helicopter or the light plane and it was voted a huge success. To see the landscape from above was spectacularly amazing. We were all glad it was suggested because it added an indelible memory to our Central Australia experience.
· The Desert Gardens Resort at Uluru was fabulous, and the first night’s evening
meal was a ‘fine dining’ experience in every way.
· Exploring Alice Springs - excursions to School of the Air, the Flying Doctor Museum, and we especially enjoyed the bush barbecue under the stars. Everything about the evening was excellent. From the happy welcome, the rustic ambience - sans windmill, campfire, and tree stump seats to the convivial hospitality. We all voted it the best barbecue steak we have ever eaten,
with simple, fresh salads and vegetables, damper dessert, and the bush-band Aussie singalong. And most of all, we were all captivated by the lights out spectacular display of the Southern Cross in the night sky as we sipped the best ever ‘billy tea’.
· We took so many photos, and we had so much fun sharing them with each other, while we talked endlessly about our experiences.
It was lovely getting to know other like-
minded people from clubs in the Melbourne area. Traveling together is a great way to make friends and network. Already two clubs have connected by reaching out and sharing club activity notices with each other. The trip was worthwhile on so many levels, but mainly fun and friendship. A few of us have already made plans to meet again on future interstate and overseas trips scheduled for 2024. We know when we’re onto a good thing. Would like to join us?
Milestone century at the Shearwater Apartments
BORN in Wandin Yallock (near Lilydale) in 1923, Beryl grew up with three sisters and attended Wandin Yallock State School.
Her younger sister Edna (98) still lives in Lilydale and, impressively, still drives too.
Beryl studied typing, shorthand and business subjects at Box Hill Technical College and worked as an admin typist for Wakes Mail Orders in Melbourne for 11 years.
She married a “handsome young man”, Milton Spencer, in 1949.
Milton was a carpenter and “loved his footy”. The married couple moved to Bendigo, where Milton worked as a foreman for the railways for 33 years.
Together they had four children; Christopher (now 70-years-old), Roland (69), Roger (67) and Linda (61).
Beryl loved raising her four children, looking after the garden, cooking and knitting, and she must have done something right as her adult children now visit almost every day for lunch!
Over the years Beryl has won a number of awards at the local agricultural shows
for her cooking, with the favourites being the ginger fluff cake and Rice Bubbles cake, both of which her children would request for their birthdays.
Twelve years ago Beryl moved into the Shearwater Serviced Apartments at The Mornington Retirement Village for a little extra support to remain independent.
She still enjoys knitting and goes shopping alone three times a week using the village bus, but loves the food cooked by the chefs and the connections she has made with the staff.
“All the people here are like a second family,” she says.
Her family, friends and the staff gathered to celebrate Beryl’s 100th birthday in September and to hear her words of wisdom for a long life.
“Stay healthy - eat healthy, keep busy, exercise and keep your mind busy,” Beryl said.

Exploring gaol’s dark history
THE Combined Probus Club of Wantirna Heights had a fantastic visit to the Old Melbourne Gaol.
While we stood in very pleasant sunshine outside in the garden, our guide, a very enthusiastic young man entertained us.
He told stories about Gaol inmates
who escaped through the sewer pipes and others, including women and children who experienced the hardship of gaol in the early days of Melbourne.
As we stepped inside the old gaol, the darkness and bleakness reminded us of just how tough gaol life was in those times. We entered the tiny cells, and saw the hangman’s noose, ominous on the upper
floor, with the original rope replaced with a new lot from Bunnings.
We also viewed the pillory where those who misbehaved were whipped with ‘the cat o’ nine tails’.
Though it was all rather sobering, it was an interesting venture into Melbourne’s darker past!
We then headed off to lunch at the William Angliss restaurant. It was most enjoyable and, of course, a complete contrast to the previous venue. The meals were beautifully presented, very appetising and served professionally by the students with very colourful and welcome drinks to complete a great day for all of us.

Highlights from trip to SA

Croydon Park Probus Club
Members from Croydon Park, Rowville/ Lysterfield, Brisbane and Sydney Probus clubs shared a fantastic trip to Adelaide, organised by Trade Travel and hosted by Sue Grady.
We all met at the Adelaide airport and departed for Mannum joining the Murray Princess Paddle Wheeler for a five-day/fournight experience.
We headed upstream under the capable hands of Captain Abe and Second Officer Ian. We went through the lock just before Blanchetown where we moored and enjoyed a wine tasting at the Burk Salter Boutique Winery. As we weren’t driving, we certainly took advantage of this and some purchased their wonderful sparkling Merlot. Future orders will certainly be made of this particular wine.
Unfortunately, we were unable to embark at Swan Reach due to the rising river, which had flooded so many homes upstream, and once again, are unfortunately expecting the river to reach to a higher level by November.
A highlight was a visit to the Ngaut Ngaut Aboriginal reserve, where shells had been found dating back more than 10,000 years. We had an hilarious tour of the Woolshed in Sunnydale, where different breed types of breeding stock sheep are kept – virtually as pets, with their names spraypainted onto their bodies, one was called Rackalamb! And the working dogs
similarly are yirtually family pets. This was followed by an evening barbecue, cooked and served in a bush setting on a very chilly night.
Next morning 18 members paid $40 to have a bush breakfast comprising kangaroo sausages, eggs with saltbush and Bobadilla seasoning, mushrooms with Coolamon herbs followed with Ozzie toast with apricot and wattle seed jam, pancakes
dripping with lemon myrtle butter and lots of billy tea. And along with the humour of the host the previous day, and a completely different setting, they reported that it was well worth the $40.
I asked Captain Abe what had happened to the staff during Covid, and was told that everyone was kept employed by renovating the entire ship, which was evident with new tiling, flooring and repainting. This
multi tasked staff worked extremely hard to cater for all our needs with excellent food and service; and seemed to enjoy our company as much we enjoyed theirs. Such a versatile happy crew.
After an unforgettable cruise and two days touring the Barossa and Adelaide, visiting the markets, Glenelg on the tram, Maggie Beer’s Farm Shop, Penfolds Winery and Seppeltsfield Estate where we ate a scrumptious luncheon. We walked around the gardens of Carrick Hill to view this magnificent home and inside to view their valued art collection, beautiful antique furniture and personal artifacts. This is a very large home which was bequeathed to the state on the death of Sir Edward Carrick in 1983.
Everyone thoroughly enjoyed this tour which was crammed with so many diverse interests.

Streets flowed with gold
BENDIGO of the 1900s was a very different place to the one visitors and locals experience today. It is said that the streets literally flowed with gold. After a good rain, in just about any gutter, you could see kids panning for gold. They did well out of it too, enough to buy their drinks, lollies and comic books.
However, it was the depths of Bendigo that proved to be the most lucrative, with more gold found there between 1850-1900 than anywhere else in the world. Of the 5500-plus registered gold mines, there is only one that is still accessible today, the iconic Central Deborah Gold Mine.
Central Deborah Gold Mine was very much a hands-on mine and the conditions that the miners worked in would be considered shocking by today’s standards - being lowered underground in a cage with only two sides, working ankle to knee deep in water, filling up 32 ore trucks a shift by hand and then pushing them a mile or more along the rails, working by carbide lamp, breathing in fumes and rock dust and communicating by bells. They were ironmen. But at the time, the working conditions were considered to be among the best on the goldfields, after all it was one of the only mines that had hot showers!
To truly appreciate Bendigo’s golden origins, a visit to Central Deborah Gold Mine is a must, it’s significant as being one of the last commercial mines to cease operations on the wealthy Bendigo goldfield and yielded 929kg of gold from its operations.
Kitted-up with a hard hat and light, you’ll
descend 61 metres underground with an expert tour guide to explore the honeycomb of hidden tunnels. Whilst underground you’ll discover how gold was unearthed, witness traditional mining equipment in action, see
gold in its natural state and hear about the characters who toiled far below the surface of Bendigo.
Underground tours are wheelchair accessible. For full details please visit
central-deborah.com or phone (03) 5443 8322. Private group tours, customised itineraries and group rates available by prebooking through tours@bendigoheritage. com.au

Diving deep into Chagall
THE Jewish Museum of Australia’s 2023 exhibition CHAGALL celebrates one of the great masters of the 20th century.
Born in 1887 in Liozna, in the Russian Empire, Marc Chagall was the eldest of nine children born to mother Feige Ite, a shop keeper, and father Khatskl Shagal, a herring merchant.
Deeply affected by his experience as a Jew of 20th Century Europe, Chagall is widely known for his paintings of Shtetl* life. His art reminds us of a world that no longer exists, evoking a nostalgia that encapsulates the experiences of many Jewish emigres.
Chagall’s early, smaller works reflect home and heritage. Working with candlelight in the dimly lit homes of the time, the detail is intricate, revealing much about his inner life and psychological mindset. The colour palette is muted with plenty of blues and browns; the latter being the cheapest paint a poor artist could afford. By the time Chagall arrived in Paris, he was transformed by the world around him and started experimenting with colour, shape and form. Recurrent themes of Paris monuments, flowers and nature began to appear in his work. Chagall always believed Paris was where he belonged and, when he arrived, it lived up to his expectations.
Chagall’s perception of the human condition was elevated by his public art
commissions; where the physical form evolves to the spiritual. Returning to his Jewish roots, Chagall completed his most accomplished, uniquely Jewish public artwork: the 12-part Hadassah stainedglass windows.
Living better together
Granted a long life of 97 years, he was afforded the opportunity to mature as an artist. His legacy culminated with a French national museum which opened 12 years before his death in 1985, and countless acquisitions and continual exhibitions are
dedicated to his art worldwide.
CHAGALL will run at the Jewish Museum of Australia until 10 December.

Probians learn about managing the twilight years
AN initiative of Horsham Combined
Probus Club to run a day seminar on issues relevant to seniors resulted in a resounding success.
Almost 200 attended the seminar in Horsham’s most modern facility, Horsham Church of Christ.
Titled “Managing the Twilight Years”, the day’s program involved seven half-hour sessions on many topics of interes form health issues to legal matters.
Organiser Faye Smith said she had been swamped with positive comments about the calibre of speakers on the day and the many relevant issues covered.
She said dealing with issues associated with ageing were complex and becoming more complex.
“This seminar was a great start at tackling these issues,” she said.
“Events like this are obviously needed. Someone said to me recently that at my age I should have a ‘number’. I now know why I need a number, what it’s for and how to get one.”
Topics covered during the day included
health programs such as Hospital in the Home, hints on planning funerals, financial hints on meeting the costs of nursing homes and aged care, legal aspects concerning wills, coping with
crises, Centrelink advice, dementia facts and many other topics.
Speakers were Simon Risson from Horsham Church of Christ; Grampians Health staff Barry Arnott, Annabel Askin
and Annette Connor; financial advisers Ashley Rowan and Amy Lehmann of Consortium Private `Wealth; retired lawyer John Brack; undertaker Trevor Bysouth through a pre-recorded message; a Centrelink community engagement officer from Ballarat and Grampians Community Health workers Jodie Smith and Joan Hargreaves.
Mrs Smith the organizing committee was able to keep costs low because of a generous $500 grant from Horsham Rural City Council and excellent modern facilities provided at no cost by Horsham Church of Christ.
Probus members catered for the event under the guidance of life member Edith Whyatt.
“This was really the first event like this that we know about,” Mrs Smith said, “But when you talk to seniors, they’re facing unexpected issues with banks, with finalizing estates, paying the huge costs requested for aged care or residential accommodation and trying to deal with many other unexpected things that crop up.”

Moving on with the times
AS part of the Australian Aged Care Group, Kew Gardens Aged Care has been providing aged care services to Australia since the 1960s.
Their Extra Service residential care facility provides exceptional care built on solid foundations.
Kew Gardens strives to ensure our residents maintain a strong connection with the surrounding community while receiving high quality aged care services.
They also boast a top class Lifestyle team who provides a vibrant and varied program of activities to maintain and prolong confidence in one’s physical abilities, mobility, strength and fitness.
Their aim is to increase individual health as well as socialisation with others to enhance each person’s self-esteem.
They haven’t missed a “beat“ over the pandemic years either by introducing a new Drumming Program last year.
Cardio drumming has taken off at Kew Gardens, taking a simple movement –drumming – and turning it into a full-body workout that will leaves residents smiling and feeling great!
It brings together drumsticks, an exercise ball, and an exercise ball stand to create one of the most fun workouts the residents have ever experienced, and … drumroll … it’s been a winner!
Zumba classes - also a feature at the facility - have also been called “exercise in disguise” and for good reason, these classes burn calories, improve heart health, and reduces stress.
It’s another great favourite of the residents adding even further to their health and wellbeing.
Chair Tai Chi was also introduced at the residents’ request.
It’s chair-based and focuses on muscle control, stability and flexibility with the movements being very gentle.
All activities and exercise regimes at Kew Gardens Aged Care are delivered with much laughter and smiles!

Flying high into our history
UP, up and away with TAA the friendly way was the theme of the day on a recent visit by Probus Club of Warragul-Tarago to the TAA Museum at Airport West, Melbourne.
TAA (Trans Australian Airlines), Australia’s first commercial domestic airline, began in its infancy not long after WW2 with many of the early pilots recruited from the RAAF (Royal Australian Airforce).
The museum contains a very extensive collection that is set out in a timeline through the decades from 1940s through rebranding as Australian airlines in the 1980s and finally to merging with Qantas in the 1990s.
On display is everything from aircraft models, pilot and flight attendant uniforms throughout the decades. Engineering and mechanical items including black box recorder (not black but actually orange) - an Australian invention that is used by aviation around the world.
Our tour included a video presentation of the early days of the airline and the vast distances and challenges that were faced especially for isolated communities and the lifeline that the airline provided to these communities.
The guided tour of the museum was conducted by retired airline staff who volunteer their time to preserve what is now aviation history and was very informative and a must see for any airline enthusiast.

Solving the missing landmark
UNTIL the new century arrived and suburbia, like lava from a volcano, spread toward the farmlands approaching the 30-kilometre radius mark from Melbourne the major shopping hub was at Epping.
Many of the members of the Combined Probus Club of Whittlesea used to traverse High Street and pass the prominent church on the corner of Lehmanns Road near where the suburb of Wollert commences. Not long into the new millennium the church was decommissioned and soon deteriorated.
We are talking about the former Wollert Methodist Church, officially founded within the Preston and Heidelberg Circuit in 1878, after a Wesleyan Methodist congregation had formed in 1859. It later became the Uniting Church until closure in 2006.
Much construction of buildings and roadworks in the area took travellers attention for the next ten plus years and the church was “just there”. Suddenly something was happening and soon the church was gone and the land was vacant. Major Roads acquired the Church site as part of the Epping Road Upgrade and preserved the building due to its significance to the local community.
Together with the City of Whittlesea and Working Heritage Major Roads set in motion plans to protect and preserve the Church’s historic and social value. These plans culminated in May of 2022 when the building was moved and rebuilt at Carome Homestead in Mernda. Now open to the public, the church will be managed by
Working Heritage and again become a hub for the community to use - for generations to come.
Much has already been published about the project, but not many have had a personal insight into the planning and logistics so we invited Kieran Davis Cultural and Heritage Adviser at Working Heritage to join with members and advise how it all came to a successful conclusion.
The Working Heritage Incorporated Committee of Management (Working Heritage) conserves and manages heritage properties on Crown land on behalf of the State of Victoria. Working Heritage has been appointed to manage 16 sites across Victoria, undertaking expert conservation and adaptation works so the community can benefit from these revitalised historic buildings and sites.
A montage of photographs showing the
various sites that are mainly in towns close to Melbourne, except for the Warracknabeal Court House was enlightening showing a pictorial history of architecture.
Kieran showed a video detailing the dismantling and relocation of the church. He explained the somewhat difficult undertaking due to the age and materials used in the original and subsequent construction. The new home for the church is, as mentioned, now at Carome Homestead a site managed by Working Heritage
Two managed sites are located within the Whittlesea council’s boundaries and again show the historical connection that the Plenty Valley has to Victoria’s establishment. They are Carome Homestead and Farm Vigano.
Carome Homestead dates from 1840 but Farm Vigano’ did not eventuate until
1934 when the well-known and respected restaurateur Mario Vigano’ purchased the property and built the family retreat. In its day Farm Vigano’ was the place where “A List Members” congregated to foster business and personal relationships. The property, with house, farm buildings, and designed landscape, provides the last tangible physical association with Mario and Maria Teresa Viganò, and is able to demonstrate their remarkable contribution to cuisine, hospitality, culture and the arts.
Whilst the restaurant and reception is privately operated the farm has 15 acres for Community Use and provides access to the Plenty Valley Gorge. The orchard has over 500 fruit trees that provide seasonal fruit for the Chefs at the restaurant. But Kieran advised that the public are allowed to pick some for their own consumption.
Carome Homestead was the site where Victoria’s [then NSW] first flour mills were established in 1840. The Plenty River provided the power for the water wheel but it was not highly productive. Records indicate it ground five [5] bushels an hour. A bushel of wheat is given as 60 lb which when milled gives about 42 lb of flour. To save readers taxing their memory or reaching for a calculator in today’s terms that would equal about 50 2kg packs of plain flour.
The mill’s operation was curtailed when the Yan Yean Reservoir was developed and the river flow slowed. The owner received six hundred pound compensation and the mill closed. The site is preserved and plans to interpret the site are currently underway. The Wollert Church now stands sparking white and proud in the grounds of Carome Homestead and much discussion is being held about future use.

contain the live flu virus - so you can’t catch the flu from the vaccine.
THE first known chemist was a woman. She wrote the first treatise on making perfume, but this chemistry text is now lost.
Tapputi-Belatekallim, a female chemist and perfume maker, is mentioned on a Mesopotamian tablet from around 1200 B.C.E One of Tapputi recipes survived to the present day. The recipe is for a perfumed salve made using calamus, myrrh, oil, and flowers, intended for use by the king.
Today we recognize alchemy as a pseudoscience and give chemistry its rightful place as a serious scientific field. Alchemists believed that diseases could be cured, and that life could be prolonged through changing some essential element into a superior form.
Several millennia on from Tapputi a female Pharmacist named Lauren OakleyAbbott addressed the members of the Combined Probus Club of Whittlesea on 4 September 2023.
This was just a few days after the controversial change to 60-day dispensing of prescription medications was mandated by the Federal Government. Lauren explained that there is still highlevel discussion going on between the Pharmacy Guild and the government.
But there are some quite serious implications of 60-day tablets both for
patients and the pharmacists. The current management of costs and revenue allows for services other than prescriptions to be provided economically. For instance, the Webster Pack [vital for healthy ageing] is now charged out at $5 whereas the cost of staff is much more. With less revenue due to the 60-day prescription ancillary services will have to be abandoned or charged at a higher fee.
She had come to talk with us about Healthy Ageing and summed it up as being in a state of free from illness or injury. The World Health Organisation defines healthy ageing, thus “the process of developing and maintaining the functional ability that enables wellbeing in older age”. Functional ability is about having the capabilities that enable all people to be able do what they have reason to value.
The phrase you are only as old as you
· 50 per cent of patients do not adhere to treatment.
· 70 per cent do not use inhalers correctly.
· Over 100 medications can increase risk of a fall.
· 1000 drugs and food can be incompatible.
· Patients with diabetes are often poorly managed.
· Folks do not keep accurate medication lists. 70 per cent of records held by the doctor and the pharmacist are different.
· People allow life to get in the way of remembering to take medication.
· Residents in Victoria do not get enough natural Vitamin D and often need supplements in the cooler months.
Lauren relayed that a high HBa1C result from a blood test to screen for diabetes is a major warning and explained it a being like spilling cordial on the floor. It makes things sticky and hard for your blood to move around your body thus increasing your risk of severe complications.
The matter of Vaccination is not clearly understood. It is possible to be infected by the flu virus at the same time as being vaccinated. When the virus activates people blame the vaccination. All flu vaccines used in Australia are ‘inactivated’, which means they do not
The government is now recommending that Covid boosters should be administered every six months. Shingles vaccinations are available free to people aged 71-79 until 31 October 2023. There are some issues with the efficiency and cost of Shingles vaccinations, which your pharmacist can explain.
The session became interactive with almost a quarter of members asking questions.
Some take away thought provokers and reminders were
· Prevention is the best medicine.
· It is Ok to feel poorly sometimes.
· Connection to nature is helpful.
· Exercise regularly.
· Do not smoke.
· Get enough sleep.
· Avoid chronic stress.
· Maintain a healthy weight.
· Eat a “healthy diet.”
The Whittlesea Pharmacy has a My Health Check-Up questionnaire that covers the matters that determine if you are ageing healthy.
Lauren’s presentation was certainly thought provoking and her expertise shone out as she addressed the questions and explained the above thought provokers.
Life Member Mary Wood thanked Lauren on behalf of members and gave her a small token of appreciation.

You really had to be there
ALMOST every person would have had a response, or heard the remark ‘you had to be there’. Such was the summary of a recent outing to Melbourne CBD by members of Whittlesea Probus Club.
They travelled to the edge of the Hoddle Grid in early September to visit the Fire Services Museum Victoria and Parliament House.
The coach trip down to Melbourne was uneventful, but it could have been different! Along Hoddle Street we were in the bus lane and travelling at legal speed. Suddenly a motorist making a left turn into a side street propped, due to insufficient room on the line of traffic. The coach drive reacted and did not hit the car!
Past-president and current treasurer Alessandra Testa is becoming quite skilled in organising day trips, and encouraging members to participate. This was to be shown as the day progressed. Some difficulty with the coach driver’s instructions and the supply of food at the luncheon venue were addressed by Alessandra and satisfactorily resolved.
Our first excursion was into the fire museum and it was an experience in the history of fire brigades and the manner in which firefighting is conducted. The museum is housed in the original building that dates form 1893 and has National Trust protection.
Our hosts gave a running commentary on the various memorabilia that is on display and a history of fires and fire brigades dating back to the great fire of London in 1066. There are over 10,000 related items contained in the different rooms of the building. These include vintage fire vehicles and appliances, numerous helmets, uniforms, badges and replicas of past personnel.
Unfortunately, it is more a visual and auditory event and writing about it does not give the personnel or the memorabilia justice (you had to be there!).
One thing that is evident today as well as historically is the camaraderie of fire-fighters that has a tendency to involve many generations of families. But it is
understandable that groups who have daily risk tend to bond and follow family traditions.
A meal-break had been arranged at a convenient hotel, but some slow service made for an anxious few minutes as our appointment at Parliament House was past-due. It worked to our advantage as our appointment had not been booked correctly. As an aside, one of the members had been taken to our luncheon venue as a young girl on her first date and catered meal.
So across Spring Street and up the Parliament House steps we went and, after Alessandra sorted things we entered the home of our politicians.
Parliament House is located on Spring
Street. The grand colonnaded front dominates the vista up Bourke Street Construction began in 1855, and the first stage was officially opened the following year, with various sections completed over the following decades; it has never been completed, and the planned dome is one of the most well-known unbuilt features of Melbourne.
Between 1901 and 1927, it served as the meeting place of the Parliament of Australia during the period when Melbourne was the temporary national capital. The building is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register. Opulence plus is the best description of the internal set up of this seat of power.
Our guide was very skilled and understanding giving us some close personal treatment. We did see something special. A member of staff was explaining to a group of school children how members are elected and the manner in which the Legislative Assembly operates. Again “you had to be there!”
The saying “don’t give up your day job” is generally used as sarcastic criticism, but if this lady gave up hers it would be a shame.
Not only did Alessandra preside over the day’s activates but for a few minutes took over the seat as Speaker of the Legislative Council.
The time had come for the return to home so we loaded into the coach and headed north. Many memories will remain and no doubt will be recalled over the years to come.

Musical generosity celebrated
CLASSICAL music enthusiasts, John and Rosemary Macleod, have been devoted patrons of the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) for an impressive span of 10 years.
Rosemary (86), a skilled pianist, and John (92), a connoisseur of fine music, have played a vital role in supporting gifted musicians from Australia and New Zealand, ensuring a strong future for classical music in the region.
In a sincere gesture of gratitude towards the Macleods, ANAM orchestrated a special musical performance at their residence, BlueCross Cresthaven. The event showcased an assembly of ANAM’s finest musicians, dedicated to commemorating the Macleod’s contribution.
As residents settled into their seats within the elegant, sunlit Club Lounge on Level 1, the distant sound of instruments being tuned echoed through the air. Soon after, the talented Reuben Johnson took
his place at the grand piano, his fingers gracefully dancing across the keys.
A captivating classical music journey unfolded, enchanting residents and staff alike. Subsequently, the trio of Matthew Garvie on piano, Harry Egerton on violin, and Shuhei Lawson on cello graced the stage, enthralling the audience with their masterful performances.
The selection of compositions performed was a harmonious blend, including
highlights like MOZART Sonata no. 4 in Eb major, BRAHMS Piano Trio in B major, no. 1 op. 8, BRAHMS Hungarian Dance, GERSHWIN Summer Time, KOSMA Autumn Leaves, RACHMANINOV Vocalise.
This musical extravaganza served as a poignant tribute to John and Rosemary, honouring their exceptional commitment to the world of music and their invaluable contributions to ANAM’s vision of nurturing the artistic leaders of tomorrow.

Let’s dive in
WELL as the months slip by for us all it’s good to know our club is still planning an interesting mix of speakers for after our monthly meetings as well as some great ideas for days out and bus trips.
Rosemary Hermans is our speaker for next meeting and she will give us a lot of information about scams and how to avoid them as well as new information relating to the current AI issues.
Then following meeting will be Elidor Brereton who is the retired principal from Camberwell High School who has been to Antarctica and will have slides and stories all about her trip and what she discovered while travelling across the Antartic and South Georgia.
Unfortunately for our Dinner Group members the dinner planned for the Kluska, Polish Restaurant has been cancelled as the restaurant has closed, but members will be notified of the new venue to replace that restaurant. Let’s hope they can manage to re-open soon as Polish cuisine would be a very interesting new taste to try.
Xmas in July was very popular with all our members who attended and thankyou to the Boronia Club ladies who also attended. Lovely Christmas decorations on each table gave a festive feel to the lunch. Soup was delicious, it was pumpkin and
pear. Main course was ham, turkey and vegetables along with sauces and gravy. Of course, we had plum pudding for dessert. Mmmm very good day at Sandown Greyhound Race Track. Compliments were given for the meal and friendly service by our 40 members and guests.
On 20 August a number of members went to the 1812 theatre production of Picnic at Hanging Rock and enjoyed the well, known story and well presented play by all actors. The final 1812 theatre production for 2023 will be on 20 October and will be a comedy called Phantom Call.

Adventures in Olinda
Bushwalks
Olinda is the perfect starting point for a walk through Sherbrooke Forest and it rewards visitors with not only spectacular views, but a pleasantly quiet and cathartic experience among the gumtrees. For such a relatively small area, there is a lot to see and do in this little pocket of cool, temperate rain forest and some incredible wildlife can be seen.
See the view
Olinda sits at an altitude of 569 metres above sea level, which means a short walk can lead to spectacular panoramic views of the Yarra Valley and Melbourne.
Burke’s Lookout on Kyeema Track offers
visitors the chance to see Melbourne in all its glory. At sunset, visitors can watch the city be dipped in golden light before disappearing beyond the horizon. After sunset, the southern sky, brilliant in the clear mountain night air, is lit by a spectacular carpet of stars.
Waterfalls
Located in the cool climate of the Dandenong Ranges, Olinda Falls is a perfect place to have a quiet picnic, short walk and spend time with the family. The walk to Olinda Falls is only 350 metres and is shaded from the car park all the way down. There are picnic tables, running water, toilets and plenty of shade to sit in.

More than a village
WHY choose a retirement village? For some it’s location. For others it’s facilities. Services. Low maintenance. Or new home features. But, for most, it’s the promise of a thriving, social, welcoming and supportive lifestyle that is so important.
Balmoral Over 55s Lifestyle Village offers a lifestyle few can match. It boasts an active, fun and inclusive community in the heart of Wantirna South. Being one of the few privately owned villages in Victoria, it puts people first, and has done for over 38 years. This means that the opportunities to socialise, meet new friends and get involved at the village are encouraged and supported at all levels.
At the heart of the village, the Balmoral Community Centre is always busy. Residents come together regularly for a
cuppa, an activity or to share a meal in the village restaurant. Residents embrace the over 30 activities on offer as well as events, fundraisers, market days and cocktail parties (to name a few!), not to mention the newly-refurbished indoor pool and spa, commercial kitchen and dining room, library, lounge, pool and snooker room, and recreation hall. And for bowlers, why not enjoy the exclusive use of our eight-rink championship bowling green. Be part of the ‘Balmoral Bowls Club’ and participate in village competitions, fun sessions, bowls smorgasbord functions and regular activities.
So, whether it be bowling, swimming or croquet. Or dining events or themed functions such as AFL lunches, Anzac Day Ceremonies or Spring Carnival celebrations. Or monthly activities such
as a trivia competition, line dancing, bingo, movie afternoons, craft, crazy whist, book discussion club, speaker’s group or computer group. Or whether it be simply relaxing with friends at home. Or enjoying the serenity of over 10 acres of private, landscaped gardens. Whatever your interest. Balmoral could be the right fit for you.
Choose from our newly refurbished one, two and three bedroom villa units. Or the convenience and ease of one bedroom apartments within close to the Balmoral Community Centre. If you’re thinking of a move to retirement living, you’re welcome at Balmoral Over 55s Lifestyle Village!
Balmoral Over 55s Lifestyle Village is at Ridge Road, Wantirna South. Call (03) 9800 1333.

Ladies celebrate 34 years
THE August meeting of the Blackburn South Ladies Probus Club was a chance to celebrate our club’s 34th birthday, reflect on our progress so far this year and look forward to the future.
The committee provided a lovely morning tea, and a great discussion starter was provided by our ‘Guess the Toddler’ competition. Members provided a photo of themselves and in groups matched the names to the photos. This proved challenging! Winners were appropriately rewarded with a Freddo Frog.
The last six months have seen the club developing, with new members being inducted and the commencement of a new interest group, The Lunch Bunch. Each month we travel by public transport to a suburb of interest and share a meal. We have been by bus to Brighton, train to Eltham and Belgrave, tram to St Kilda for cake and next will be a trip to Mordiallic.
One of our most successful outings was a trip to the Photographic Museum in Wheelers Hill to view the extraordinary work of Australian photographer, Anne Zahalka.
Senior curator Angela guided us through the photographic treasures from Anne’s archive of over 40 years. Angela’s valuable insights really enhanced the experience. The club celebrated Christmas in July and more recently travelled to the city for a guided tour of The Treasury Building and lunch. A picnic is also planned for October
to celebrate Probus Month.
Meetings have been enhanced by the contributions from speakers with a wide range of interests. Annie Wysham provided us with a delightful hour of diverse poetry and prose. Her ability to take on the voices and mannerisms of the characters was impressive. We enjoyed the humour of Barry Humphries and Pam Ayres, the work of Banjo Paterson, Judith Wright and Henry Lawson, as well as some of Annie’s own writing.
Kien Quoch shared his personal story of life in Australia after having arrived from Vietnam as a refugee. His happy disposition and gratitude shone through as he entertained and informed our members of the hardships he overcame in leaving his family to start a new life in Australia.
Author John Howell discussed his book, The Only Woman at Gallipoli. In November 1915, a woman appeared during the fighting and placed flowers on the grave of a Victorian Cross recipient. She then disappeared. John researched this story for five years to solve the mystery. He was an excellent speaker, and his story was of great interest to the group. We still don’t know, however, if the woman in question was Lilian, his wife or Gertrude, his lover!
It is always enjoyable for members to spend time together and we look forward to more fun, friendship and fellowship in the lead up to Christmas.

Discovering Port Fairy
ON Monday 4 September, 22 fun seeking Probians from The Combined Probus Club of Belmont Central set off in our cars for a four day stay at the quaint fishing village of Port Fairy.
The journey from Geelong saw us going through the main towns of Winchelsea, Colac, Camperdown and Warrnambool with scenes of dairy cattle in green pastures along the way. A pleasant drive of approximately two and a half to three hours.
Check-in was 2 pm, giving us enough time to settle into our comfortable cabins (Bernie and Vanessa and Don and Carol in their caravans), stretch the legs, and get familiar with our surroundings before we all gathered in the Community Room with our drinks and nibbles for Happy Hour at 5pm. Happy Hour had us chatting about our day and what was planned for the days ahead.
After Happy Hour, a quick dash back to our cabins to prepare our dinners to bring back to have together in the Community Room. Conversations continued during dinner and lingered until some thought it was time to call it a day; however, a few others stayed on to enjoy an hour or two of games or cards. This Happy Hour and dinner get-togethers became the norm for the rest of our stay and became a great opportunity to get to know each
other, especially those who were new to the Caravan and Camping group. Lots of laughter and happy faces in the room every night.
Tuesday morning saw us all indulging in generous servings of delicious pancakes with maple syrup or lemon and these with the compliments of the Port Fairy Holiday Park. Mini-golf also with compliments of the Holiday Park was next on the morning’s agenda. The sun was out and a little wind didn’t deter us from enjoying our efforts to get a decent score. Some frustrations as always and but quite a few of the golfers fluked a hole in one. Bernie with two, Gill also with two, Anne, August, Kerry, Jan and Jim all with one. Luckily we all managed to complete our 18 holes before the weather changed and had us scuttling off for coffee in Reception.
Winning Scores - Jim and August scored 62 being equal first; Kerry and Don equal on 66 but Kerry winning the prize because of her hole in one. All agreed that lots of fun was had.
We were then left to our own devices to fill in the rest of the day, some taking the opportunity to wander around the wide streets of the historic township and take in some of its heritage sites which are listed by the National Trust of Victoria.
Morning melodies
Maureen Smith
ON 19 September, 20 members of the Combined Probus Club of Belmont Central went to the Fyansford Hotel for Morning Melodies with Marcia Rae singing a lot of Patsy Cline and Connie Francis’s hits.
Everyone enjoyed the music with a lot of foot tapping happening. Some members were even given some special attention. The show was followed by a two-course lunch which was accompanied with a lot of reminiscing and fellowship. A good time was had by all.

There are over 60 classified buildings and these range from small cottages built by whalers and seamen to substantial homes and public buildings. Others browsing the shops and boutiques or having lunch at the various pubs, coffee shops or bakeries. A small group of us also took a walk to the picturesque port, then on to Griffiths Island Reserve through the Short-Tailed Shearwater Reserve and to the Lighthouse which was built in 1859. Happy Hour in the Community Room at 5pm followed by dinner, and for some, games after dinner. Another full day of activities.
On Wednesday we all set off at 9.30am for a day in Portland, a major port exporting produce from Victoria and South Australia located on the western shore of Portland Bay. The main activity for our group in Portland was the Portland Cable Tram Ride. Before boarding the beautifully restored saloon and grip cars, we had time to look through the Tram Museum and Depot which houses model railways exhibitions and a large gemstone collection and a variety memorabilia. There was also a very interesting collection of veteran, vintage and classic cars, motorcycles, and a Penny Farthing bicycle.
We then all hopped on for a one hour or so 7.4km tram ride along Portland’s beautiful foreshore, accompanied by a very informative volunteer tour guide. Past the Botanical Gardens, Maritime Museum, Caravan Park, Water Tower and then a reverse ride back to the Depot.
After the tram ride, we had the opportunity to visit the Portland Maritime Discovery Centre with its permanent displays documenting the region’s maritime history. It also houses a 14-metre Sperm Whale Skeleton and the Portland Visitor Information Centre. We also had the chance to inspect the Portland’s WWII Memorial Lookout Museum with a 360-degree view of the surrounds which was the once the North Portland Water Tower.
Some of us chose to walk around the shops, or wander along the foreshore or visit some of the town’s historic buildings. Other relaxed over lunch at some of the many eateries.
A small group discovered that the Petrified Forest and Blowhole at Cape Bridgewater wasn’t too far away and decided to take a look and explore. They weren’t disappointed. The Petrified Forest
is an amazing collection of hollow tubes of limestone which have been eroded by millions of years of rainfall forming hard, trunk-shaped pipes. They had great photos to show us at our Happy Hour at 5pm.
Happy Hour Wednesday night also became a time to remember and pay tribute to one of our esteemed members, Vin McDermott who had died the previous week and whose funeral we would all have attended if we had not been on this trip. Vin and his wife Shirley had been part of the Caravan and Camping group over the years. Vin had also been part of our Singing Group and had a favourite song, Blue Eyes Singing In The Rain. Bernie O’Toole suggested that we remember
Vin by singing the song, so, as Bernie strummed his guitar, with saddened hearts we all sang along.
There were no planned activities for Thursday apart from dinner at 6pm at the Star of the West Hotel. From time to time the weather was somewhat inclement but some decided to play another round of Mini-golf. Quite a few took another look around town, or a walk across the bridge to the other side of the river. A couple took themselves to have a look at the local cemetery with the earliest graves dating back to the 1850s and two of the ladies went on the Port Fairy Arts Trail and visited Garden Studio 70.
No Happy Hour today but dinner at the
hotel which was once a staging post for Cobb & Co coaches. We all enjoyed our meals, and being our last night together, most were happy to linger longer over dinner.
Friday morning brought 100km winds and rain. After saying our good-byes, well wishes and safe travels most of us were keen to set off for home with tail winds behind us.
This trip would not have happened without the time consuming planning and organization by our dedicated duo, Adriana Nyhof and Bev Coomber. Congratulations and many thanks, Adriana and Bev on a great trip.
