Farming fallout A “slap in the face” is how some have described the shock announcement last week that the Victorian Livestock Exchange (VLE) in Pakenham will close next year, as stock agents are still trying to come to grips with the decision and the potential difficulties that lay ahead. Agents have said VLE has backtracked on previous assurances and withheld any consultation over the announcement made last Monday 20 November, while lamenting the “big hole” that will be left for local farmers when Pakenham is no longer selling.

Increased transport costs and further burdens on cattle are the top concerns for the transition, with agents predicting many of Pakenham’s cattle will not easily move to VLE’s Leongatha saleyards. “It’s hard to look elsewhere, farmers are going to have increased cartage cost, effects of wear and tear and most important effects on animal welfare,” said Alex Scott & Staff director and long time agent, Greg Price. “It will leave a big hole for the Baw Baw, Cardinia and Yarra Valley areas.” STORY PAGE 3

Water safety plea after death

Joyride ends in charges

A state coroner has implored adults to closely watch young children around water after investigating a four-yearold’s tragic drowning at Lysterfield Lake in January 2021. On a hot afternoon, the Doveton girl had been playing with a bucket and spade about a metre away from her family’s picnic rug when her mother noticed she was missing. Five minutes later, a man carried the motionless girl out of waist-high water just two metres from the shore. An off-duty paramedic and two other bystanders performed CPR, followed by ambulance paramedics. But the girl died at Royal Children’s Hospital the next day. STORY PAGE 5

Police have charged a 27-year-old Dandenong woman with a string of offences following an incident in Pakenham on 26 November where a child was observed on the bonnet of a moving vehicle. The woman presented herself to a police station on Monday 27 November and has been charged with reckless conduct endangering life, reckless conduct endangering serious injury, driving in a dangerous manner, driving at a dangerous speed, reckless driving, careless driving and using an unregistered motor vehicle. She has been bailed to appear in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 14 February 2024. STORY PAGE 7
