$500K tax hit for church An established Berwick church is taking the State Revenue Office (SOR) to VCAT as they have been hit with a retrospective tax debt amounting to over $500,000 after their land tax exemption was partially lifted, a move the church labels ‘unjust’. It was in late 2021 when the Berwick Church of Christ was notified that their exemption under section 74(1) of the Land Tax Act, which defers land taxation for charitable institutions, was being stripped for an undeveloped portion of their 4.85 hectares plot of land. A company which supplied labour in Kooweerup and Devon Meadows has been issued the largest fine for breaching labour hire law in Australian history, after being penalised more than $600,000 by the Supreme Court of Victoria for unlicensed activities. Successfully prosecuted by the Labour Hire Authority, A L Star Express Pty Ltd was found to have knowingly and repeatedly contravened the Labour Hire Licensing Act 2018 (Vic) when it supplied 16 labour hire workers to four separate horticulture businesses, without holding a labour hire licence. Temple snubbed By Corey Everitt A new Sikh Temple in Pakenham has been rejected by councillors, after they overturned a proposal to grant a permit from council officers at the latest Town Planning Meeting on Monday 4 December.
The development would have seen a 2900sqm building for a place of worship on a 9ha piece of land at 195 Dore Road, Pakenham with 89 car spaces and 47 informal car spaces. It was proposed by Sikh Sewaks Australia (SSA), a Melbourne based not-for-profit organisation.
The proposed motion from Cardinia Shire Council officers was to grant a permit, however Councillor Brett Owen moved an alternative motion to refuse the permit seconded by Deputy Mayor Councillor Graeme Moore. Cr Owen won a majority of councillors over to his position, arguing the proposal in-
fringed upon agricultural and environmental protections of Green Wedge Zoning, was not close enough to the future Pakenham East urban growth area and was contrary to the rural character of the region. STORY PAGE 3
