A former Beaconsfield teacher facing charges related to child sexual abuse appeared in court last week with the matter being considered for a higher court hearing. The accused fronted the Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 8 February. The court heard that nine complainants make up the charges, the prosecution made note that some family of the complainants were in the courtroom that day. The prosecution submitted the matter to a filing hearing for the matter to be ‘uplifted’ due to the seriousness of the matter. STORY PAGE 4

A 20-year-old Pakenham man who was shot on a busy bridge in Melbourne’s CBD had confronted authorities with a broken bottle, police allege. Police and protective officers (PSOs) were attending a separate violent incident near Princes Street Bridge about 7.30pm on Friday 9 February when a man approached them and began making threats, Assistant Commissioner Dean McWhirter said. Mr McWhirter, director of Victoria Police’s Transit and Public Safety Command, told journalists on Saturday the officers were concerned about his behaviour and asked him to show his hands. “When they did that, he produced a broken bottle and made threats towards one of the PSO members in particular,” he said. Temple clash on By Corey Everitt The battlelines for a major development of a sikh temple on Dore Road in Pakenham are being drawn again, as the application is set to be heard in VCAT later this year after a failed bid in the council.

Proposing a 2900sqm building built on a 9ha property, caused a stir in the Cardinia Shire Council last year after it was rejected by councillors in dramatic fashion that saw tense debate across two council meetings. The applicant, Sikh Sewaks Australia, has filed for a VCAT hearing that has been sched-

uled in the middle of this year. Keen Planning who are representing the applicant’s proposal are adamant that it is appropriate and considerate to the area and hope to sway the tribunal to their side. However, objectors are already preparing to present their opposition. Dore Road locals,

George and Jai, say the surrounding neighbourhood are ‘really up in arms’ about the proposal and are determined to prove it ‘doesn’t suit the area’. STORY PAGE 5
