Buckin’ fun

Thousands flocked to Bunyip Recreation Reserve on Saturday to see the annual Bunyip Rodeo to get a glimpse at all the action.

There were a few big falls as man and beast battled it out for spectators to enjoy.

Storm fallout

Two weeks on from the February 13 storm many of the worst affected are raising again the issues of infrastructure to compensation from the fallout of the severe storms.

Businesses in Upper Beaconsfield and Cockatoo, who have lost upwards of $10,000 from just a few days of no power, questioned the established compensation of the State Government in relieving locals.

While telecommunication companies are under the spotlight to address the failure that saw people in communication blackouts.

With such storms and prolonged power outages having occurred in recent memory, the frustration only increases with a local starting a petition calling for ‘immediate action’ on energy infrastructure in the hills.

Funding dire

Cardinia Shire Council is calling out the Federal Government to support more emergency relief in the local area, as only one service in the whole of the shire is funded by federal money.

Of the funding from the Department of Social Services (DSS) covering the South East, only one of nine DSS funded services is available in Cardinia.

The council is pushing for more funding, to more service as residents are feeling the pressure on cost-of-living and housing.

“There is an urgent need for more emergency relief services within Cardinia Shire that are within people’s reach,” Mayor Kowarzik said.
