This is the second edition of our “Welcome to Central Queensland” magazine, produced by the team at CQ Today.
Our aim is to provide an insight into the benefits and highlights of this beautiful and historic region. Central Queensland is unique, it offers our visitors and residents the absolute beauty of the Southern Great Barrier reef and islands, the complexities of rural living, the value of our natural resources and a landscape that moves from rainforest to cottonfields to oceans edge.
Our Central Queensland region has long been the financial backbone for the Queensland economy, bringing prosperity to the Sunshine state from our natural resources being consumed through export and national markets.
We have been fortunate to have also benefited from the growing lifestyle choice made by made our city dwellers to relocate to this glorious part of Queensland. Central Queensland’s reputation as a must see and or live destination can only be enhanced when our visitors and new residents realise how much there is the see and experience.
When meeting the locals throughout Central Queensland you will be welcomed into our communities and greeted as friends. Through casual conversations you will also see the strength, resilience and determination born through generations of families raised on the land, the down to earth lifetime connection with rail, a region that knows the value of strong education with a long history of born and bred residents who are high achievers through their chosen sport.
Central Queensland can and does offer all the benefits of the coastal, city and rural living, if you are seeking a lifestyle choice, a new travel experience, another career or an environment to grow your family, then you will find that there is no better place to be.
The “hidden gem” statement has been often used to explain an environment that has been underutilised or not frequently visited, I think these two words must have been originally penned to describe this bountiful region.
We welcome you to immerse yourself into a region that values you and your family as visitors and hopefully new residents.
As we host this celebration of all things beef-related, we want to help you make the most of your time in our city.
While Beef2024 promises a spectacular showcase of the country’s beef industry, beyond the event Rockhampton beckons with its unique blend of rich history, stunning landscapes, and warm hospitality, and we want your visit to be unforgettable.
Some locals will tell you what makes Rocky special is that if your fishing cast is big enough, you could catch a barra from your hotel balcony. A mum or dad will say it’s a cooling swim, and bike rides. Others will say it’s the early morning fresh air, garden picnics, silence in our caves, our bush land, that moment before your drink is poured.
Some say ‘a must’ is a selfie with a bull. There are those who will wax lyrically about Rockhampton’s iconic heritage. And of special significance, the cultural heart of our city that beats to the sounds of the traditional custodians of the land - the Darumbal people.
No matter your age, whatever the occasion, fireside or five star, feeling the grass between your toes or the fresh mountain air on your face, you’ll never be bored. Because we never are.
Elevate your perspective with a stroll through the treetops at Nurim Circuit where the canopy of the forest unfolds beneath your feet.
Meet delightfully mischievous meerkats, a cheeky chimp family, otterly adorable otters, and more than 30 species of native and exotic varieties with free entry at Rockhampton Zoo or meet the residents a little more up close and personal during zoo-keeper talks and booked Animal Encounters.
Immerse yourself in the rich cultural tapestry of the region with Indigenous experiences that share the stories, traditions, and knowledge of the Darumbal people.

Nestled within the Botanic Gardens, Rockhampton Zoo has been at its present site since 1925.
While the animal section at that time consisted of monkeys, cassowary, possums, guinea pigs and pea fowl, today you can discover more than 60 species of Australian and exotic animals.
Whether it is chimpanzees and cassowaries, dingoes and otters, or crocodiles, koalas and meerkats, there are an array of fascinating animals to meet and observe in their carefully recreated habitats.
The heritage-listed Botanic Gardens create a timeless atmosphere as you walk through the front entrance of the Zoo. Greeting you on arrival is the iconic dome shaped walk through the bird aviary with more than 25 different species of Australian Rainforest birds thriving in the tropical habitat. There are colourful rose-crowned fruit doves, king parrots, lyrebirds and a collection of water birds that forage in the pond. Once inside the aviary, you can walk through to the Cassowary viewing platform.
As you wind your way around the Zoo, a
must-see are the family of chimpanzees. Rockhampton Zoo is one of only four zoos across Australia with chimpanzees, and the family of seven includes two baby chimps, with the older sibling being the first chimp to be born in Queensland since the 1970s.
There are also a mischievous mob of meerkats, two playful otters, a giant saltwater crocodile, and many other species
to explore. The Zoo has wheelchair and stroller access, and plenty of seats to stop and rest, or enjoy watching the animals from.
The Zoo is open daily from 10am to 4pm and is free to enter. For more information visit www.rockhamptonzoo.com.au.
Once you’re finished at Rockhampton Zoo, take some time to explore the Botanic
Gardens. Celebrating 150 years in 2020, Rockhampton Botanic Gardens is one of the oldest and most established public gardens in Queensland. The site has been heritage listed since 1999 and is home to The Central Queensland War Memorial (The Cenotaph).
Originally developed as a facility for trialling plants for their commercial potential, the Gardens today retain their
historical significance with a number of iconic plantings including the 150 year old canopy of Banyan figs and avenue of Bunya pines. The rich, colourful history of the gardens expands to the tranquil Japanese Gardens, designed by leading Japanese landscape designer the late Kenzo Ogata, as part of a Treaty of Friendship signed after World War II.
Open from 6am to 6pm daily, this
oasis of sub-tropical specimens is a firm favourite with nature lovers. Find your zen in the peaceful surrounds of the Japanese Gardens, take a picnic lunch under the shade of the giant fig trees, bask in the glorious sunshine or take the shady route to explore the secret corners of the gardens.
You can also order a bite to eat at the Gardens Tearooms.
When you set foot on one of the Keppel Bay Islands you will feel as though you have stepped onto an island paradise where the ‘squeaky-clean’ white sand flows between your toes and the ocean sparkles before your eyes.
Whether you’re visiting Great Keppel for a lazy Sunday picnic lunch, or staying for a couple of days or more, you can’t fail to be impressed by the stunning scenery or the
relaxed atmosphere of the Keppel Islands.
With the protection of a fringing reef, the waters surrounding the Keppel Islands are amazingly calm, making it perfect for all types of watersports such as snorkelling, paddle boarding, water-skiing and tubing.
Great Keppel island is approximately 1454 hectares in size and is home to 17 pristine white-sand beaches and an interior rich with native flora, all waiting for you to
explore.
Ninety percent of the island is bushland and there are several bush walking tracks that disperse trekkers around the island to untouched, pristine beaches, or spectacular lookouts.
Ferries depart every day to Great Keppel Island and extended tour options are also available from Keppel Bay Marina and Rosslyn Bay Harbour.
Rockhampton’s Riverside Precinct is situated right in the heart of the city and undoubtedly offers up the best views of the boat dotted vista along the Fitzroy River (Tunuba).
Mirrored by Australia’s longest National Trust heritage-listed street, think rich colonial past meets urban paddock.
Whether you’re in town for a few nights or just looking for a place to stretch the legs and recharge with lunch, Rockhampton’s Riverside Precinct is a must for your itinerary.
The Rockhampton Riverside Precinct isn’t short of places to enjoy a coffee, cold drink, delicious steak or sweet treat.
Take your pick from heritage listed pubs, quirky cafes, dining about the river or the micro-brewery.
Perch up with a coffee and let the kids (and adults alike) explore the bright sculptural works of the rainbow serpent, Munda-Gadda at the adventure playground then cool off among Rod Laver Plaza’s popup water jets.
The Riverside Precinct sits adjacent to East Street mall, a shady tree lined avenue lined with cute cafes but more importantly great boutique shopping.
Grab a coffee and get shopping, including at Rockhampton’s oldest department store, Stewarts.
Sit back, relax and experience the city from a different perspective with River Cruises CQ.
The 90-minute sunset cruise is a must do and includes complimentary nibbles and drinks. Plus, the views back towards the city are breathtaking and you can catch local wildlife that call the river system home along the way.
Prefer land to sea? See the city come alive with lights on a Capricorn Carriage ride throughout the CBD and Riverside Precinct. Tours run Saturday nights between 7pm and 10pm and leave from outside Stewarts.
The Riverside Precinct is home to the annual Rockhampton River Festival, a threeday celebration of arts, music, culture and food. Taking advantage of the natural and built heritage weaving throughout the city’s laneways, this is Central Queensland’s largest winter festival.

Horse racing has a long and cherished history in Rockhampton dating back to 1868 when the Rockhampton Jockey Club was formed.
In fact, the first race meeting in the city was held in July 1868 at the original racetrack in West Rockhampton.
Callaghan Park racecourse virtually located in the heart of Rockhampton close to the Fitzroy River and a stone’s throw from the City Centre, has been the home of racing in the city since 1898.
The track with a circumference of over 1600 metres is widely regarded as one of the best turf tracks in Australia.
For over a century until the opening of the grass track in September 1984, racing was run regularly if not every Saturday on a sandy loam track.
Since the transformation to a grass surface, racing in Rockhampton, which is one of the city’s biggest industries, has become a major player in Queensland.
Its Saturday and mid-week TAB racing dates attract horses, trainers and jockeys from far and wide throughout Queensland and interstate.
Over the years some of Australia’s best
jockeys have ridden at Callaghan Park – the likes of Melbourne Cup winners Peter Cook, Darren Beadman and Harry White – just to name a few.
Rockhampton has always been associated with a lucrative Winter Racing Carnival run annually in June and July but in recent years a feast of racing in Autumn has added a new dimension.
During April, the Capricornia Yearling Sale Racing Carnival is staged.
The Capricornia Yearling Sale is unique in that is the only one of its kind staged in a regional city in Australia with all the others staged in the Capital Cities or the Gold Coast.
The fabric of the racing industry in Rockhampton is renowned for its hospitality and the social activities and functions conducted by the race club.
You can avail yourself of all the information on the Rockhampton Jockey Club website at admin@rjc.com.au

Rockhampton is the only city in Australia where you can fly in, check in and boat out in less than an hour targeting trophy Barramundi and King Threadfin.
The Fitzroy River (Tunuba) is famous for Barramundi, pronounced “bardda moon di” by the Darumbal people. This defines the Fitzroy River catchment as the genuine Home of the Barramundi in Australia.
Brumby’s Bread is baked fresh daily with No Preservatives
Brumby’s is your one stop for delicious sweet & savoury treats, hot pies & sausage rolls.

Allenstown Square, Parkhurst Town Centre, Gracemere Shopping World
King Threadfin are also found in abundance in the Fitzroy River (Tunuba), the largest river on the eastern seaboard of Australia. With a total catchment area of 156,000 square kilometres, the river provides prime estuary and freshwater fishing country.
The floodplain holds a number of freshwater lagoons, brackish lagoons and waterholes. These include some easily accessible lagoons on the south side of the city which can be fished from the bank.
With over 300 days of sunshine a year and warm winter weather, Rockhampton is a fishing destination to visit all year round.
If you are heading to Rockhampton to target trophy Barra, it’s best to visit in Barramundi Season. Starting at midday on 1 February each year, Barramundi Season stretches right through till midday on 1 November and allows you to target barramundi and take home your catch.
When the season closes, barramundi must not be targeted to allow the fish to spawn. If you happen to catch a Barra within season close, just remember to release it back into the water.
King Threadfin Salmon can be found aplenty, and can be targeted all year round.
As the largest river system on the eastern seaboard of Australia, the Fitzroy River (Tunuba) provides prime estuary and freshwater fishing options with a range of fish species available to catch. The most popular are Barramundi and King Threadfin.
Barra are a fast growing fish and commonly reach legal size in just three years. They can attain trophy sizes of a metre and more in as little as six or seven years, and may survive well into their teens. Barramundi spawn between the months of October to December each year, making it Barramundi close season from November to January each year.
Threadies are a spectacular, hard-fighting fish that rapidly reach a similar status to barramundi in the eyes of keen sport fishers. There are plenty of trophy-sized threadfin over a metre in length, and while they may be easy to find, they can be a little more challenging to catch.
No matter who you are, how you want to fish, or what you want to catch, the Fitzroy River (Tunuba) is ready to welcome you. For more information on fishing in the Rockhampton region, visit www. fishingthefitzroy.com.au

ONCE an exclusive beach resort at the turn of the 20th century, Emu Park is an idyllic seaside village with plenty of character.
Emu Park is home to the famous Singing Ship sculpture. Set against a spectacular coastal vista, the majestic monument commemorates the area’s legacy of the historical explorations of Captain James Cook.
A gentle sea breeze produces a musical sound through fluted pipes that will be long remembered.
Just below the Singing Ship is a viewing deck and boardwalk that makes up part of the new Centenary of ANZAC Memorial Walk. The boardwalk hugs the coastline and features information on the First World War’s many major battles.
At the lower end of the walk are several commemorative art installations and a gatehouse that honours locals who fought in WW1.
Bell Park, located in the town’s centre, is a peaceful oasis perfect for enjoying a picnic or a kick of the footy.
The park is home to several iconic events each year like ‘Oktoberfest’ and the ‘Festival of the Wind’, as well as monthly
markets. Emu Park Main Beach is a calm beach with a surrounding grassy picnic area and large undercover playground. The beach is patrolled during peak times.
If you have a boat or just like to wet a line, nearby Coorooman Creek is a popular local fishing spot with a quality boat ramp and pontoon.
From Emu Park, the ‘Scenic Tourist Drive’ (Scenic Hwy) heads back to Rockhampton, passing the turn-off to Koorana Crocodile Farm on the way. Koorana was the first commercial crocodile farm in Queensland.
Here you can tour the farm, hold a baby croc or tour guests can dine in the croc restaurant.

Once famous for gold and copper, Mount Morgan is now the jewel in the Capricorn’s tourism crown.
The former mining town was home to one of the world’s most successful mines to date.
Operations for the mine commenced in 1882 and became one of the richest gold mines in Australia for some time.
The area declared 225 tons of gold, 50 tons of silver and 360,000 tons of copper during its 99 years of operation.
Currently, Mount Morgan has a population of about 3000 who all enjoy the comforts of a small semi-rural area that offers ideal opportunities to discover the region’s early successes and relive its captivating past.
During your time at Beef Week, a day trip to Mount Morgan is essential to complete your Central Queensland visitor experience.
Standing at the Arthur Timms lookout, looking across the valley gives you a fascinating panoramic view of the heritagelisted Mine, showing the huge slag dumps in
the foreground and the big stack dominating the 13 km square site.
It is easy to imagine the mine in full operation - with man and machinery scurrying about to wrest the ore from the hard rock then smelting it into the precious metal.
A visit to this town is not complete without seeing the Mount Morgan Rail Museum –a true example of how man mastered the mountain, using Swiss technology to bring much needed equipment and goods to the mine, allowing it to grow to full potential. The 3D movie presentation is a must- see.
Mount Morgan’s rich past is evident when visiting the town’s Historical Museum.
Here you will find informative displays about the mine and the town and its people.
The town’s main CBD area ensures that the visitor and townspeople are well catered for and a visit to the bakery is a must for lovers of pies and cream buns. Not forgetting the fine food and hospitality served at the many hotels and cafes in town. Walk along the traffic island in Morgan Street to find out the history of the Mafeking Bell and Running the Cutter.
Mount Morgan has a range of unique businesses where you can search from treasures from the past or look for future finds in stores with names as unique as the town itself. Take a few moments to check out the art at the local gallery.
Mount Morgan also boasts the recently developed bike and walking trails around the town’s main water sports and recreation area, the No. 7 Dam.
Colonial architecture throughout the town is evidence of the town’s immense wealth during the mining heyday.
If you are looking for somewhere to stay check out the town’s hotels, motels and caravan parks for room, unit or cabin styled accommodation.
The expansion of support initiatives for early career teachers in rural and regional centres is proving highly successful in attracting graduates looking to secure sought-after positions in Catholic kindergartens, schools and colleges within Catholic Education –Diocese of Rockhampton (CEDR).
CEDR’s Career Assistance Program and Graduate Scholarships are gaining wide acclaim among beginning teachers who say financial assistance, early employment offers, job certainty, wellbeing and extensive mentoring were big draw cards.
Timothy Biddle, a Primary Graduate Scholarship recipient, commenced his teaching career this year at St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School in Blackall and says permanent teacher status and essential financial support had provided invaluable stability.
“Being placed in a small rural town like Blackall, having a sense of stability and security is really important. It means I have been able to fully immerse myself in the community and foster strong connections with students, parents, colleagues and the wider community,” says Tim.
“I feel empowered to continue making a positive impact on the lives of those around me, nurturing both academic excellence and spiritual growth within our school and the wider community.”
enables the mentorship of pre-service teachers in high-quality education settings.
“So, we want the very best teachers for our students.”
“Ultimately, it helps me to be a better teacher,” Tim said.
CEDR Primary and Secondary Scholarships are on offer for students in their final year of tertiary study in either a Bachelor of Education or Master of Education. Primary Scholarships are tiered to cater for individual priorities focusing on Rural Opportunities, Family Wellbeing and Certainty and Permanency.
Expansion of the CEDR Scholarship initiative pairs well with the innovative Career Assistance Program (CAP) which
“The long-term vision of the CAP is to build the capacity and capability of classroom-ready teachers through tailored, high calibre coaching and mentoring,” CEDR Diocesan Director Leesa Jeffcoat said.
“CAP enables Catholic Education to nurture and support pre-service teachers, immersing them in practices and routines that cannot always be explored fully in an undergraduate education course, leading to positive outcomes for students and families.
“All the research shows us that it is the quality of teaching that makes the greatest difference in the learning outcomes of young people.
Catholic Education - Diocese of Rockhampton comprises 10 kindergartens, 31 primary schools and eight colleges in regional and rural centres from Mackay to Bundaberg and west to Longreach.
Employing around 3000 staff and educating more than 18000 students, CEDR is committed to making a significant contribution to the life of each community that the Ministry is privileged to serve.
