A Taste of EP
Last chance to grab a taste
After 20 years of A Taste of Eyre Peninsula, it is time for one last hurrah.
Showcasing the outstanding food and wine of a place the size of Eyre Peninsula is no easy task.
For a start, it is bigger than England and Wales combined and the producers are in remote towns dotted all over the place.
But, when someone suggested Eyre Peninsula needed its own farmers market 20 years ago, passionate foodie and local Nerissa Schuster took up the challenge, assisted by close friends Fiona Ward and Amanda Price.
Two decades and many volunteer hours later from an avid group of producers, friends and family, together they have been the driving force behind a series of events that have drawn attention to the region’s flourishing food and wine sector.
At the time it was a first for Eyre Peninsula.
What initially started in 2004 as a part of Eyre Peninsula Field Days, the Eyre Peninsula Farmers Market quickly went on to become a regular festival for locals and visitors across the region.
In 2008, the market went on to include the untamed EP coastline, which has an abundance of the world’s best seafood, and renamed it to Eyre Peninsula Farmer & Fisherman’s Market incorporated, separating from the field days to become its own identity.
Much success was enjoyed from these markets.
Fast forward to 2017 and A Taste of Eyre Peninsula

Amanda Price, Nerissa Schuster and Fiona Ward at the 2005 Eyre Peninsula Farmers Market in Port Lincoln.
became a registered business name along with a sense of renewed enthusiasm to be inclusive of all things EP, not just food and wine.
The name may have seen a transitional journey over the years, but the mantra has always remained the same - to support and promote Eyre Peninsula Producers.
“After it was first suggested we have a market there wasn’t a huge amount of information about the local food sector on the Eyre Peninsula,” Nerissa said.
“But when I started investigating the various producers, I was surprised at just how many there were.
“Seafood and agriculture
on the Eyre Peninsula are so extensive, but we also have seen a growing sector for everything from wine, honey, olives and smallgoods to condiments, fruit and nuts and baked goods.”
Over the years, A Taste of Eyre Peninsula became a regular feature at the biennial Eyre Peninsula Field Days, with standalone events at Coffin Bay and Streaky Bay held annually and the occasional pop-ups in Port Lincoln, Tumby Bay, Elliston, Whyalla and at the Yorke Peninsula Field Days in Paskeville.
“They’ve become a great fun day out for people to sample the local produce while enjoying some live
music,” Nerissa said.
“Our wonderful EP wineries always provided a strong presence at our events along with local chefs who worked with producers to cook up a feast to ensure a standout food experience. Visitors had the option to sample, linger, sip, linger longer and buy fresh product from the producers.
“With a backdrop of our seaside towns, our agricultural field day and promotion of local musicians, our events have always provided a truly unique Eyre Peninsula experience.”
After 20 amazing years, it is time to raise your glass to the last hurrah for A Taste of Eyre Peninsula at this year’s Eyre Peninsula Field Daysdrop in over the three days to see the team.
What once began as an idea and grew over a few glasses of wine with friends came to fruition after a lot of work and has had a long, wonderful journey of promoting EP producers.
“To all the producers throughout the years, thank you. Without you, there was no market,” Nerissa said.
While the journey is taking a step away from hosting markets, there is still much to love and celebrate about the wonderful products that continue to evolve and be produced in the region.
Keep on supporting local producers as when you buy local, not only are you buying a quality product made with love, but you are also strengthening local communities.

Feel the power of Angel Flight
Come fly with Angel Flight SA representative Owen Crees for one session only in the EP Pavilion on Thursday, August 15 at 10am and explore Angel Flight’s history and services.
Owen, a treasured Angel Flight pilot, has conducted 400 Angel Flight missions since he commenced volunteering in 2004.
He was raised on a sugar cane farm in far north Queensland, near Port Douglas.
Owen studied chemistry at universities in Townsville and Bristol (UK) and worked in the Queensland sugar industry for 30 years - in research and development, consulting and commodities trading.
He came to Adelaide in 2001 as the chief executive officer of Research Laboratories of Australia - a private technology development company specialising in digital
printing technology.
Now retired, Owen is pursuing other businesses and aviation interests.
He has been a licensed private pilot for more than 45 years, with 3000 hours of flying experience.
Owen is currently the director of Aldinga Aviation Pty Ltd and Australian Mooney
Pilots Association, and previously the chairperson of Angel Flight Australia for six years.
Angel Flight Australia is a charity that coordinates non-emergency flights to help people in rural and remote communities, dealing with the triple trouble of bad health, poor finances and daunting
distance.
All flights are free and may involve patients travelling to medical facilities anywhere in Australia.
Since its inception, Angel Flight has conducted more than 58,000 flights and helped 100,000 rural families in need, dealing with conditions such as leukaemia, lung cancer, brain tumours, liver, kidney or heart disease, bowel disorders, cystic fibrosis, osteoporosis and stroke.
Angel Flight has also helped people receiving post-operative treatment following accidents and a small percentage who required humanitarian aid when faced with terminal illness.
In addition, families already devastated by illness and limited finances have been reunited, helping to reduce stress and to help in the healing process.

Simplicity and quality
There is a fresh wave in the Taste of Eyre Peninsula.
From pro surfer, thirdgeneration fisherman, local West Coaster and now a food creator, Josiah Schmucker and fiancee Bek Adele have built a local cult following with the Salt & Soil food truck.
The well-travelled cook said part of the inspiration behind the project was food’s ability to connect people.
“Salt & Soil is a food van inspired by our taste of travel, passion for simple but quality food and drinks,” Josiah said.
Josiah Schmucker said Salt & Soil was inspired by a passion for simple, but quality food.

“Showcasing ingredients and produce that are as local as possible. Sharing our experience that is sure to please the palate.”
Hailing from a West Coast fishing family, it comes as no surprise that local seafood takes centre stage in the van.
“We both love seafood and having grown up with it, it has been a huge part of our lives, so having easy access to some of the best seafood in the world, it would be silly not to capitalise and get creative with it,” Josiah said.
The Little Coffee Pot team is excited to be back at Eyre Peninsula Field Days.

EP favourite to return
The Little Coffee Pot has been a regular in Kimba and throughout Eyre Peninsula for the past six years, serving specialty coffee from Boston Bean Coffee Co and providing homemade sweet and savoury treats.
The front verandah at Workshop26 Kimba is where the Little Coffee Pot currently hangs out five mornings a week and you
will also see it popping up at events around the community.
This year it will also be returning to Eyre Peninsula Field Days in the A Taste of EP tent.
Little Coffee Pot cannot wait to bring back its delicious hot and cold drinks, homemade cakes, biscuits and sausage rolls to the 2024 event.
Walford shines at schools awards
Walford Anglican School for Girls proudly stands as the only South Australian boarding house to be named among the finalists in the Australian Education Awards 2024, an accolade that underscores the school’s commitment to excellence in education and transformative experiences for its students.
Principal Dr Deborah Netolicky expressed delight at this recognition.
“Being recognised as a Boarding School of the Year Excellence awardee in the Australian Education Awards 2024 is a testament to Walford’s unwavering dedication to providing an exceptional experience within our boarding house,” she said.
Nestled in the leafy suburbs of Hyde Park, just 3.5 km from Adelaide’s CBD, the boarding house stands as a haven of comfort and belonging within the middle and senior school campus.
Here, girls from diverse backgrounds come together, forming lifelong friendships while pursuing their educational endeavours.
“Our boarding house is a special, close-knit place where girls flourish academically, socially, and personally,” Dr Netolicky said.
“We pride ourselves on our family-like boarding environment of care, safety and belonging, with modern facilities that set the standard for contemporary living, learning
and leading.”
Equipped with ensuite bathrooms, both shared and private rooms offer privacy and comfort to students.
Cosy communal spaces foster camaraderie and relaxation, with movie nights and shared meals at the Fig Tree Café strengthening bonds among boarders.
Additionally, a weekend activities program ensures a fun-filled experience, affording chances for skill development, socialisation and exploration.
“Our dedicated boarding staff are committed to truly knowing each girl and understanding their individual needs,” Dr Netolicky noted.
“We prioritise creating a welcoming, inclusive, and
supportive environment that cultivates independence, self-confidence, and mutual respect among our girls.”
While academic excellence remains paramount, Walford’s boarding philosophy focuses on fostering individual talents and preparing students for life’s challenges.
With personalised attention, students receive support tailored to their strengths and interests.
“Choosing Walford means more than choosing a school; it means choosing a nurturing community where your daughter can grow, thrive, and find her place in the world.”

Succession planning vital
Succession planning in the agricultural sector is a critical process ensuring the seamless transition of farm ownership and management from generation to generation.
Often perceived as daunting, it does not have to be a source of distress if approached with clear communication and strategic planning.
Engaging in open dialogues within the family and seeking guidance from trusted advisers can lay a strong foundation for a successful transition.
Letcher Moroney’s advisers come with a wealth of experience in farm succession planning.
They understand farm
succession is complex and involves much more than the succession of the business itself.
Its integrative approach includes an extensive list of considerations that need addressing before implementing a successful plan, including:
• Current business and landholding structure
• Custodian assets
• On-farm and off-farm children
• Retirement funding and planning
• Estate planning - the transition of assets on death
• Succession planning - the transition of assets and business pre-death
• Taxes and tax relief options
Letcher Moroney understands no farming business is the same and that fairness is often not equal in farming succession.
It can help you navigate the complexities of agricultural transitions, working with you to provide a tailored plan for your business and your family.
Ultimately, successful succession planning in farming hinges on foresight, effective communication and the right support to navigate the legal and financial complexities.
For personalised guidance on succession planning tailored to the unique challenges of farming, connect with the specialist primary production team at Letcher Moroney.

Breaking barriers at Ramsey Bros
At Ramsey Bros, apprentices come from all walks of life and ages.
Joining the Riverton team as a mature age apprentice last year, Peter Dumesny has thrived and won the 2023 Apprentice of the Year award, proving it is never too late to pursue your dreams.
Growing up on a farm in Nullawarre in Victoria, 36-year-old Peter always had a passion for machinery.
After serving in the military for six-and-a-half years, he aspired to become a diesel mechanic and joined the Ramsey Bros Riverton team with a clear goal.
“Peter came with determination, wanting to be one of the best technicians, and he meant it,” Riverton Branch manager Justin Smorti said.
Peter enjoyed working on advanced agricultural equipment and valued the mentorship and training he has received from the Ramsey Bros team and Case IH at Wagga Wagga TAFE and working with great farmers.
Justin highlighted that targeting mature candidates like Peter was strategic to balance
the team.
“Older candidates bring a level head and life experience, giving the team a strong balance of skills,” he said.
“Age isn’t a barrier; businesses, like ours, value life experience and maturity.”
Winning the Apprentice of the Year award was a surprise to Peter, who humbly acknowledged his talented workmates.
For Justin, Peter’s recognition was a boost for the whole team.
“I was stoked for him to get the award,” he said.
“We knew he’d be one of the best - he was certainly achieving big things in our team, and it was great to see him get recognised among the whole company.”
Ramsey Bros was celebrating Peter’s success and remained committed to supporting talent at every stage of life, reminding everyone it was never too late to follow your career dreams.

Opening door to new adventure
Moving to boarding school can be daunting, but for Mabel Hyde, a year 10 boarder at Seymour College, it marked an exciting new chapter.
Hailing from Tootenilla on Eyre Peninsula, Mabel found herself embarking on a journey far from home.
Despite the challenges of being away from home, the supportive community at Seymour College quickly alleviated any potential worries.
“My transition to the boarding house was exciting and special,” Mabel said.
“Meeting the dedicated staff, students, and carers assured me that I would get the support and care I needed.”
Central to Mabel’s experience has been the friendships
forged within the boarding house and with the wider college community.
“I enjoy the friendships made through boarding and the chance to spend quality time with new people,” she said.
She also valued the flexible tutoring offered during homework sessions.
“They can assist with any subject and help me to understand topics better.”
This has been particularly helpful for Mabel, who has had the opportunity to study high performance sport in year 9 and this year is accelerating her learning by doing two stage one SACE subjects.
Seymour’s diverse offerings enrich Mabel’s school life.
From participating in cocurricular sports to engaging in clan (house) activities, she remains socially connected and busy.
Mabel reflected that the year 9 expedition to the Flinders Ranges was a standout, “fostering a sense of independence and an appreciation for the exquisite Australian environment”.
Seymour’s unique blend of location, facilities, and community spirit, all nestled on a sprawling 25-acre campus are central to Mabel’s love of her school.
“I enjoy access to the on-site swimming pool, oval, tennis, and netball courts.”
Boarding at Seymour has certainly opened doors to
new adventures and personal growth for Mabel.
In summing up the experience, she said: “Boarding at Seymour has changed my life - bringing friendships, opportunities, and access to sports and academics that I wouldn’t have had at home.”
Seymour College boarder Mabel Hyde, of Tootenilla, has enjoyed her time at the school.

Eyre Peninsula Trophy and Engraving Services
Creating unique trophies and gifts
Blue and Erin King are the new owners of Eyre Peninsula Trophy and Engraving Services - after buying the business from Phil and Judy Olsen in December 2023. They offer the same great variety of trophies and giftware, with the addition of the new 2024 range.
There are a multitude of surfaces they can engrave on - using a laser machine and hand or rotary engraving.
Erin said that it was as customers of the business when it was located in Whyalla that they first became interested in buying it.
“I went up to get some trophies for our tennis club and started a conversation,” she said.
“We wanted a family business and our children are at an age to help out. We have both been in careers that have taken us away from fam-
ily due to long hours or travel. “We wanted something that we could be creative withboth of us are fairly creative and so are our children.”
The sky is the limit when it comes to what type of trophy or giftware they can supply, as most of them have interchangeable figures or plaques to cater for the variety of sports or occasion.
Their children Noah, 12, and Jaime, 11, help out after school - putting logos on medallions and working on different combinations of trophy parts to create something unique to suit an event. Blue encouraged people to speak to them about their ideas to commemorate any special occasion or achieve-
ment.
They are always happy to create something special, using the client’s ideas and their own and communicating back and forth to make something the client is happy with.
A recent example was for a clock to mark a retirement, which they worked with the customers on to get it just as they wanted it.
“They have now got a unique, one-of-a-kind clock,” Erin said.
Eyre Peninsula Trophy and Engraving Services is now situated at 12 Main Street, Cowell.
Blue and Erin can be emailed at eptrophies5602@gmail. com or phone 0427 110 667 to discuss any of your trophy or giftware needs.

Sheep to suit conditions
Australis/Genelink Dorper and White Dorper Studs were founded in 1997 with a very clear vision to “breed easy care ewes and rams, cleanskin sheep that perform and thrive in low rainfall grazing country”.
That focus is the same today and was recently reinforced - at Broken Hill Agfair 2024 - from long-term clients highlighting high returns from prime lambs sired by its commercial flock rams.
What makes the sheep ‘easy care’ selection for:
- Sound feet, mobility and conformation
- Ewes and rams that shedcleanskins
- Dorpers are non-selective grazers demonstrating a low
food conversion ratio (drought tolerant) - less food for more meat
- Ewes and rams have proven high fertility - 130 per cent/lambing three times in two years - 195 per cent annualised
- Ewe lambs joined from eight-months-old and promising ram lambs test mated at five months
- Together with demonstrated high yielding carcasses with exceptional eating quality, the sheep are the ideal package suited to self-replacing dry land grazing systems.
Australis and Genelink stud selection is backed up by Lambplan and DNA analysis.
From 1997 they adopted a collegial approach to busi-
ness, sharing genetics, ram purchases, markets, animal husbandry and AB technology with like-minded farmers who have often become close friends over the years.
Collaboration was a foundation of the early Dorper industry and one to keep returning to, given the current competitive dollar-driven market and looking to the future and planning for generational change.
Today it welcomes the recent collaboration with the family-based business Garryowen Pastoral Company.
Operated by Sean O’Brien and Bec Henderson - along with their four boys Hunter, Eli, Hudson and Jackson - the mixed farming opera-
tion based in Cowell covers 7000ha, made up of 3000ha arable land and 4000ha of managed native mallee vegetation.
The recent addition of 100 Australis/Genelink ewes now complements their 300 ewe White Dorper and Meatmaster flock.
With a shared vision all look forward to breeding high-performance flock rams for a growing client base and resuming the annual Wudinna ram sale.
We don’t rein in adventurous hearts and minds, we set them free.

Wilderness uncovers unique potential
Wilderness School is incredibly proud to celebrate 140 years of exceptional education.
Throughout much of this rich history, the boarding community has been at the heart of the school and it is easy to see why.
Immersed in opportunity, tradition and life-changing relationships, Wilderness boarders become trailblazing women who believe in themselves and their ability to make a positive impact.
The feeling of being at ‘home’ defines the Wilderness boarding experience.
The unique design of the house - with its connected walkways and character-filled spaces - contributes to its welcoming atmosphere, but more
than anything it is about the relationships cultivated.
“Wilderness boarders develop lifelong bonds,” principal Belinda Arnfield said.
“These relationships shape their lives, enrich them as people and build their self-worth. “Wilderness boarders are embraced for who they are as individuals, and deeply connected to each other.”
The Mentoring Program is one of the boarding school’s signature offerings, ensuring girls have a smooth transition into boarding life.
Big sisters and buddies are assigned from within the boarding community to act as a support system for new boarders.
Another bespoke offering, the Wilderness Boarding
SHE WILL
House Activities Program, is tailor-made to fit the varied interests of the girls and allow them to experience the best of what is on offer in South Australia’s amazing capital, from footy at the Adelaide Oval to award-winning festivals like the Fringe and so much more.
The Boarders Fashion Parade is one of Wilderness School’s most celebrated traditions.
This annual event brings the community together, showcasing SA businesses and national fashion designers.
Funds raised from the event support the Bahadure School and boarding house in the Annapurna region of Nepal, funding tuition, teachers’ salaries and operating expenses.
“One of our core principles
is that with privilege comes a responsibility to help others and to teach our girls that they have the agency to make a positive difference,” Mrs Arnfield said.
“We are so proud of our boarding program and our girls. There is so much opportunity within a Wilderness boarding experience, it is really one-of-a-kind.”
The school’s boarding entrance scholarship is now open - find out more and apply at: wilderness.com.au/ scholarships
To learn more about Wilderness, visit the school at field days or contact registrar Natalie Klein at 8344 6688 or nklein@wilderness.com.au to arrange a tour of the school and boarding house. Within a Wilderness boarding experience lies a unique opportunity for each girl to achieve her potential. Travelling her own unique path, she learns to be adventurous, respectful and courageous. A confident global citizen. A TRAILBLAZER.

Avoid seeding misses at harvest
Seeding system blockages hurt at seeding time, causing unnecessary downtime and expense - and hurt even more when you view results on the harvester.
Even a slight disruption to achieving maximum flow means less than optimum production, which is frustrating when the terms of trade can put a premium on every last grain.
Growers want to know that their selected product rates are being applied and their seed and fertilisers are always being sown simultaneously.
Latest blockage and flow monitoring technology is alleviating these concerns and providing growers with peace of mind for their seeding op-
erations - and for when they hop on the header later.
The Recon Wireless Blockage and Flow Monitor, on display at the FarmTech site at Eyre Peninsula Field Days, features patented acoustic sensors that are highly durable and instantly detect blockages or reduced seed flow anywhere on seeding implements.
Multiple sensor options allow the system to easily adapt to nearly any rig or application and the software is compatible with iPads, providing a user-friendly interface that displays all manifold runs and gives an audible alert if a run becomes blocked.

bars, all with in-line knifepoint and press wheel tyne configurations, when considering a blockage monitoring system opted for the Recon Wireless Blockage and Flow Monitor from Farmscan.
“We were getting sick of the seeding mistakes and the wireless monitor looked easy to set up and work with,” Tim said.
“We thought a little bit of monitoring could be good and weren’t expecting huge things. With canola sown at 1.3-2.5 kilos (per hectare), we didn’t think it would be detectable, but we now know straight away when the box runs out. We couldn’t believe it would pick up canola.
“The first time we had it on, the fan was too slow and it wasn’t seeding, and it picked it up.”
Tim said the return on investment with the blockage monitors was significant considering the reduction in mistakes and the benefits from achieving correct time of sowing.

Standardised silo solutions
Ahrens’ latest pursuits in revolutionising its transportable silo range through innovative technology and manufacturing techniques is greatly helping farmers control their on-farm storage capabilities.
The fifth-generation, South Australian family-owned engineering, manufacturing and construction company has made significant investments within its local factories to ensure farmers are guaranteed reliable and high-quality rural infrastructure to support their operations.
Ahrens has cleverly taken all the best features from its broader range of silos manufactured in SA, Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland and combined them with world-class technology.
This results in a product which gives you the best infrastructure solutions to suit
every farming application.
Ahrens Silos Group general manager Mirela Vuckic said the outcome was superior rural infrastructure made available to rural clients within a competitive market.
“It means we now have the advantage to offer Australian farmers a greatly improved product with standardised and quality components,” she said.
“We have also invested in world-class machinery in most of our factories so we can handle larger coil more easily, reduce the number of horizontal joins in our tanks and, with the reinforcement of internal wall stiffeners, has resulted in a structurally advanced silo.”
Further strength in the silo range is backed by the replacement of rivets with mono bolts, Huck bolts and Henrob fasteners for a superior seal finish.
Mirela said.
All silo bases have been upgraded with a cone design that enables grain to run more freely, which is especially helpful with clean out of products such as sorghum, barley or oats.
A big feature for Ahrens involved its ring beam design.
“Instead of being RHS square bent around, we have reinforced the top of the base with angled silo section,”
Farmers providing vital aid
Bread Australia is a faith-motivated humanitarian response to people living in communities around the world who are threatened by food insecurity.
Part of the global not-forprofit charity Barnabas Aid, it partners with Australian businesses, farmers and individuals to improve the lives of oppressed and marginalised minorities by shipping gifts of high-protein grains - lentils, chickpeas and wheat.
South Australian farmers have enthusiastically joined with it to bring 47,000 kilograms of life-saving Mid North grown lentils in 20kg bags to Matabeleland in southern Zimbabwe, initiating what has been described as a ‘lentil revolution’ - providing more than 300,000 meal portions in the drought-afflicted country.
Further shipments of grain to be shipped through Pakistan to South Asian communities are in the pipeline.
The success of Bread is its building of robust logistical supply chains.
Utilising the expertise of Viterra Grower Services, AGT Foods and Kangaroo Island Pure Grain, it ships container loads of lentils from the Port of Adelaide to lands in desperate need of vital protein.
Bread Australia is keen for you to get involved in this brilliant local initiative that makes a global difference.
Farmers can make donations to Bread Australia through the National Grower Registration (NGR) card scheme.
Contributions of ASW grade grain can be made when delivering to any Viterra site.
Viterra will then work with the charity to consolidate the grain to be out-turned at Port Adelaide, ready for export.
Farmers can also make donations directly to Bread’s NGR account #1501 0105 by contacting the Bread head office at 117 King William
Street, Adelaide on 1300 365 799 or info@breadprojects.org.
Grain already warehoused in Viterra bulk handling facilities can be donated using the grower-to-grower form available from.
Gifts of grain or money to Bread Australia is a taxdeductible donation.
“This alteration is something only our company uses and it means that there is no structural ledge for stored product to hang.”
Above others, Ahrens’ pursuits mean it is your answer to storing and protecting your harvest no matter the season’s outlook.

Make every drop count
Be water wise on Eyre Peninsula.
A reliable supply of water is vital for the wellbeing of everyone, our families, our schools and our Eyre Peninsula community.
How much water we use, when and how are all important factors impacting the water supply.
In Your Home
Did you know that studies have shown most of us use more than half of our water inside our homes, but by using some of these tips, you can actually save water around your home.
- Take shorter showers - you can save up to 11 litres of water every minute by installing
a water efficient shower head.
- Install a dual flush toilet - this can save you up to 50 per cent on every flush.
- Turn off the tap - when brushing your teeth, lathering hands or shaving.
- Only turn the dishwasher on when it is full - and when it is time to run, make sure you use the right wash settings.
- Fill the sink - with only the amount of water you need, rather than washing dishes under a running tap.
- Collect water in a bowl or jug - whenever you need to run the taps and use what you keep on your garden.
In Your Garden
Your garden can thrive while being water wise and

Viterra’s local team provides expertise and individualised experiences while being backed by the strength and financial security of its global business.
Benefit from these direct relationships with end use customers around the world due to global offices in key destination markets.
Growers can contact Viterra’s grain merchants with any grain marketing inquiries by calling 1300 453 626.

Agricultural insight for students
Cleve Area School offers an agriculture option in the centre of Eyre Peninsula, with students able to gain hands-on farming experience at nearby Sims Farm.
The 350-hectare farm was bequeathed for use as an educational facility in 1960 by the late Gordon Sims and provides a valuable teaching resource.
The school’s year 11 and 12 students study a range of topics ranging from cropping management through to the chance to learn their way around a shearing shed and sheep.
They can learn to shear and throw a fleece, and develop skills in wool classing.
Year 10 students are busy preparing their prized Merino wethers for the upcoming Royal Adelaide Show, where the school has done exceptionally well in the past.
The addition of goats for year 8 and 9 students to also prepare for the show allows them to build skills and confidence presenting show sheep in year 10.
Students’ agriculture learning takes them from propagating plants in year 7 through to managing a paddock each at Sims Farm in years 11 and 12.
The school offers a home away from home for students from outside of the area in which to board.

Family-owned machinery experts
Bascombe Auto Ag is a family-owned business that has been operating out of Cummins for more than 20 years.
Initially, Scott and one apprentice provided general mechanical servicing and repairs to cars, trucks, buses and a range of farm machinery in the early 2000s.
Keen to be involved in the latest technology at the time they became GPS-Ag dealers in 2003.
Autofarm RTK 2cm autosteer systems were highly regarded and Bascombe Auto Ag installed many systems back in the days when full hydraulic kits needed to be fitted and plumbed into the machine’s hydraulic system and calibrated and tuned from scratch.
With Scott’s keen interest in harvesters, Bascombe Auto Ag became sub-agents for G & J East at Kadina - which
enabled the sale of their first CLAAS Lexion in 2010.
This partnership saw CLAAS Lexion ownership grow significantly around the Cummins area over the following 12 years.
The business grew from those humble beginnings to become a significant employer in Cummins, with more than 20 permanent staff and dealers for a range of quality farm machinery.
Having sold the business to the East family from Kadina in June 2023, Scott and Sarah have stayed involved in the business under the new ownership to help maintain continuity of the personalised service it is well known for.
With the backing of the East Farm Machinery Group, Bascombe Auto Ag is well positioned to support the Eyre Peninsula farming community well into the future with
sustained growth in sales and service of some of the world’s best agricultural machinery. Call in to see some of the range of quality equipment on display at Bascombe Auto Ag’s sites at Eyre Peninsula Field Days, or you can check out the website at bascombeautoag.com.au or call in to 2-8 Railway Terrace, Cummins.

Founded by Matt and Meagan Lienert in 2012, Lienert Engineering has grown into a well-known company offering locally made products with outstanding backup service.
Known in the beginning for its repair and maintenance services, Matt was then desperate to put some of his ideas into practice.
Over the past 10 years Lienert Engineering has successfully introduced locally made sheep feeding equipment, clay delving and deep ripping machinery, fuel storage and transport options, trailers, grain storage, quick fencing machinery and more.
Lienert’s opened its new store - Lienert Ag Supplies - in May 2023, which specialises in agricultural merchandise, while still offering the huge range of Lienert Engineering products.
As one of only two distributors in South Australia of Brazzen Rural Products, Lienert’s now offer a huge range of sheep, cattle and horse yards and accessories - combining this with local knowledge and after-sales support, Lienert Engineering is your one-stop shop for everything in agriculture.
It has all of the above on show, so be sure to drop in and see the team at its massive site located at 210 A Road at this year’s Eyre Peninsula Field Days.

Innovation supports farmers
Since 1985 Primary Sales Australia has been making products designed by farmers for farmers.
Specialising in a diverse range of tools from tillage points to liquid carts, Primary Sales has earned a reputation for innovation and practicality in the agricultural sector.
As harvest season approaches, its commitment to enhancing efficiency and reducing losses remains steadfast, showcased through its latest innovations.
Among the standout products is the i-paddock Typhoon Feedrum, a favoured choice among farmers for direct heading during harvest.
Designed to tackle the challenges of varying crop conditions, this product has garnered praise from farmers like Daniel Schmidt of Yorke Peninsula.
“We did wheat, barley and beans with the Typhoon. We grow tall beans, they don’t feed nicely sometimes, and the Typhoon made a huge difference,” he said.
“There was a speed increase right away and a smoother, quieter feed.”
Harvest efficiency is not just
about speed but also about minimising losses.
Research from Grains Research and Development Corporation’s ‘Measuring Harvester Losses’ report for 2022-23 highlighted staggering potential losses, with more than $300 million of grain lost in just Western Australia.
To combat this, Primary Sales began distributing the Bushel Plus SmartPan System in 2018.
This system revolutionises loss measurement by collecting samples, separating chaff from seed, and providing accurate loss calculations.
It has quickly become indispensable during harvest time, helping farmers optimise yield and reduce wastage effectively.
Primary Sales offers the Mini Combine, a portable electric device that allows farmers to take precise samples of various crops including wheat, barley, canola, oats, peas and beans.
This innovation enables farmers to collect a sample for assessing moisture content and quality without the need for large-scale equipment, thereby saving time and reducing fuel consumption.
The Mini Combine ensures samples collected are identical to those taken by large headers, providing reliable data for informed decisionmaking in the field.
For those interested in experiencing these innovations firsthand, visit Primary Sales at Eyre Peninsula Field Days.
Witness how its products can transform your harvesting process, enhance efficiency and ultimately boost productivity.
With a warehouse and sales team based in Adelaide, Primary Sales is here to support South Australian growers.

Leading the way with clean energy
Bentleys SA is leading the way in carbon accounting advisory authenticity via its federal government Clean Energy Regulator credentials and Climate Active Certification.
Currently, few advisors have the depth of knowledge in ESG and carbon farming matters required to make informed decisions, however there is yet to be a ‘standard’ implemented that prevents unqualified professionals from claiming expertise in the field.
Bentleys partner David Papa is one of only a few Clean Energy Regulators in South Australia and also chairs the Bentleys national ESG special interest group
across Australia.
He said the importance of carbon neutral verification was especially apparent in light of the ESG revolution.
“Under a proposal released by the Australian Treasury, companies will need to disclose ESG and climaterelated information as part of their general financial reporting, starting as early as July 2025,” he said.
“These new laws will require businesses to disclose and report on their carbon emissions. Implications go further than benefits to the environment and businesses choosing to do the right thing. Banks and insurers are increasingly wanting to see
carbon neutrality as an indicator of business longevity and sustainability.
“The inheritance of carbon footprint via the supply chain places pressure on who organisations choose to do business with as a result of new, widespread business expectations and requirements.”
While being verified by qualified professionals such as Bentleys was the ideal means of carbon neutral verification, the Climate Active stamp was a valuable asset within a carbon ledger that could be provided to the supply chain.
Climate Active Certification was the government’s carbon neutral standard.
Leading by example, for Bentleys the Climate Active Certification was “a signal to clients that we are committed to sustainability and adding value for our clients rather than adding carbon footprint”, David said.
According to Bentleys partner and carbon accounting expert James Allen, B2B organisations recognised as carbon neutral were increasingly recognised as preferred suppliers as larger companies were compelled to disclose their environmental impacts.
Contact Bentleys for expert advice on your ESG and carbon accounting matters, or visit the team at Eyre Peninsula Field Days.
Picturesque academic excellence
Situated on 40 picturesque acres in the Adelaide foothills, Rostrevor has been a home away from home for boys to receive a quality Catholic education for more than 100 years.
While some aspects of boarding have changed over time - such as the recent multimillion dollar Duggan House facilities upgrade - the culture of academic excellence, cocurricular achievement and brotherhood have not.
Port Lincoln’s Joshua Butterworth is thriving at Duggan House during his final year of schooling.
“I really like the feeling of brotherhood around the boarding house. Coming home from school, it’s a really
good environment to come back to,” he said.
Outside of school hours Rostrevor’s boarders enjoy a wide array of activities.
“My favourite thing to do after school is play football with all the boys. We also go to AFL games together and go shopping at the mall,” Jonty Thompson of Ceduna explained.

ment, with 100 per cent SACE achieved for seven years in a row.
Jonty, like many Rostrevor boarders, chooses to study agriculture, taking advantage of the on-site agricultural farm.
“My favourite subject is agriculture. We’re in a cropping competition at the moment, versing other schools around Adelaide to see who can make the best crop,” he said. Rostrevor’s boarders also
choose to participate in the rich array of co-curricular offerings, significantly bolstering the senior football and cricket teams.
This year, Jacob Newton of Elliston is the captain of the First XVIII football team, with Port Lincoln’s Jayden Evans and Balyn O’Brien of Streaky Bay serving as vice captains.
With state-of-the-art facilities and an in-house chef, the wellbeing of the boarders is always a priority.
