Intersection sparks summer death fear By MICHELLE HERBISON

A DANGEROUS intersection approaching Barwon Heads could cause deaths this summer, according to the town’s community association. Barwon Heads Association (BHA) president Judith Brooks said her group was pushing VicRoads to “take seriously” the urgency to upgrade signage at Black Rock and Barwon Heads Rds. Ms Brooks said a September accident between a taxi and a car carrying a mother and her baby highlighted the danger of the crossroads. “She didn’t see how serious it is that she was entering a crossroad with cars coming across. It’s a real country road and you really don’t get enough warning. “With the coming summer season there’ll be more traffic on this road. The sad thing is we’re waiting for people to die in order to get this done.” VicRoads recently repainted white lines on Black Rock Rd following BHA complaints in February but “trucks coming around the corner have taken the freshness off it in two weeks,” she said. “We want VicRoads and the State Government to at least put in two stop signs. The line of vision is bad here and there’s nothing to designate how dangerous it is.” Ms Brooks said Black Rock Rd, which leads to popular beaches and a Barwon Water sewage plant, was busy during summer. Drysdale in trade-off on boundaries By MICHELLE HERBISON PLANS for boundary changes at Drysdale, Clifton Springs and Curlewis will “compromise” to alleviate residents’ concerns, according to council. City of Greater Geelong councillors voted at their first ordinary meeting this week to defer a proposal to extend Clifton Springs’ boundary south toward Wyndham St. Council also voted to amend a proposal to change boundaries at Portarlington Rd. Residents of each area had worried a change of address from Drysdale to Clifton Springs would reduce their property valuations and create unnecessary inconvenience. The Registrar of Geographic Place Names in February requested that City of Greater Geelong realign boundaries in four areas because they crossed through some properties. “Ambulance Victoria has emphasised the need for correct locality to avoid confusion in an emergency response situation,” a report to council said. An initial plan would have moved properties into Clifton Springs from two courts off Portarlington Rd inaccessible from the town. But council included a new boundary behind Wintersun Crt after receiving residents’ objections that “properties accessed from Geelong-Portarlington Rd should remain as Drysdale - large rural allotments that have no access via Clifton Springs”. Drysdale Clifton Springs Association vice-president Matthew Green said council’s decision to amend plans and retain Wisbey Crt and Resovoir Rd in Drysdale was “a good result for the residents”. “Some were very unhappy and saw no logic in it,” he said. Mr Green questioned council’s priorities in itemising the issue at the top of its agenda. “It was interesting that the first agenda item of the new council was to change Drysdale’s boundary.”

Trees lack ‘historical significance’ By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN FIFTEEN ash trees controversially facing the chop on the banks of the Barwon River in Newtown are “not historically significant”, according to Corangamite Catchment Management Authority. The CCMA’s November newsletter said the authority was now awaiting an arborist’s report on the trees to determine their fate. “CCMA initially delayed tree removal work in response to community concerns that the trees had historical significance. Meetings with City of Greater Geelong councillors, relevant staff and sub-

sequent investigations indicate the trees are not historically significant,” the newsletter said. “In response to community feedback, CCMA has agreed Fyans Park must continue to have shade trees available and will not proceed with removing all the ash trees. “The City of Greater Geelong has also agreed to engage a qualified arborist to assess the trees’ health and identify suitable replacements to be planted adjacent to the existing ash trees. “The arborist’s report, due in November, will help inform a final decision, which will be made

in consultation with community representatives and the City of Greater Geelong.” Councillor Stretch Kontelj, who initiated a council motion to investigate the trees, said the arborist’s inquiry investigated the trees’ health, life expectancy and maintenance issues. “I’m comfortable they won’t touch the trees,” Cr Kontelj said. “They’re looking brilliant and in full bloom at the moment. Now everyone can see the value of these trees and see why the community is so passionate about retaining them. “Who in their right mind would want to cut them down?” 1055041-KG46-12

ST ALBANS Park couple Tina and Marty Wilkinson’s decision to adopt a child was “very automatic” after realising they were unable to conceive naturally. “I always had in my heart I wanted to adopt at some stage in life,” Ms Wilkinson said. “Being able to save a child from a terrible situation by giving them a two-parent, lovable home is very important. “This has led us to do something maybe we wouldn’t have gone to do otherwise.” The Wilkinsons are networking through Facebook with prospective adoptive parents in the Geelong region to begin a “pre-parents” friendship group, Holding Hope. “You may not know anyone else who’s been there, you may be hanging on tales of a friend of a friend of a friend,” the Facebook page said. “Holding Hope is about connecting you with others in the Geelong area who are also spending their evenings deliberating over forms and sifting through poorly constructed websites for much needed information.” Ms Wilkinson said the couple had so far faced struggles including difficulty communicating with Department of Human Services. “We just really wanted to connect and talk to people. I’ve got friends to talk to and good family support but it’s not the same as someone who can really empathise,” Ms Wilkinson said. Ford calls ‘shutdown’ to slash Geelong jobs FORD’S Geelong plant will shut down this Friday as the company meets workers individually to spell out their fate under a latest redundancy program. The initial redundancy target of 440 across Ford’s Geelong and Broadmeadows plants has fallen to 330 after redeployments across the business. Staff have taken up 118 voluntary packages, leaving 212 involuntary job losses in a split of roughly 40:60 between Geelong and Broadmeadows respectively. Staff sources described the number

to go against their will in Geelong as “considerably less’’ than initially proposed. But the 40:60 ratio would equate to about 80 unwanted layoffs at the North Geelong plant. Ford staffers told the Independent Ford arranged the private meetings to avoid unhappy groups massing together. Management declined to comment on Friday’s sackings other than to say the private meetings were organised at the request of workers. Ford declined to specify the numbers of workers to be laid off volun-

tarily or involuntarily in Geelong. Ford and unions were thrashing out the details of redundancy packages at Fair Work Australia as the Independent went to press. Ford will reduce its production schedule from 209 units to 148 across all models, in line with its reduced workforce. The auto-maker’s redundancies come a week after Qantas announced another 250 heavy maintenance job cuts at Avalon Airport following completion of work on nine of the carrier’s 747-400 jumbo aircraft. Earlier this year Qantas cut more

than 100 jobs at Avalon. The latest round of layoffs will halve the engineering workforce at Avalon to around 340. Ford faces an uncertain future as sales of its flagship Falcon continue to decline despite growth in Territory sales. Industry observers such as Wheels magazine have suggested that Ford is doomed in Geelong and Broadmeadows despite government assistance to maintain operations until 2016. Hopes for the Geelong plant lie heavily with the company’s product development operations and their usefulness in the brand’s global operations.

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A STATE Government proposal to privatise Victoria’s 33 apprenticeship field officers has blindsided Geelong’s vocational education and training organisations. The officers (AFOs) investigate disputes between employers and their apprentices or trainees. They also support apprentices or trainees alleging workplace violence and harassment, provide counselling and help training providers with information. The Barwon South-West region has three AFOs, two in Geelong and one in Warrnambool, seconded to Gordon Institute of TAFE. The AFOs service about 6500 apprentices and trainees in the region, with 40,000 using the officers across the state. State Government has lodged online an advance tender proposal for “Procurement of Apprenticeship and Traineeship Regulatory Field Services”, to be advertised on Wednesday. The Independent understands that the tender is aimed at cutting Government spending of $2 million annually on AFOs. Vocational education and training organisations are concerned the process could result in fewer field officers and reduced support for apprentices and trainees. Gordon chief Grant Sutherland said he was aware of the proposed tender but not of any changes “to the way these roles will be funded or positioned within the community”. “We do know that no changes will be made until July 1, so these positions will continue to be based at The Gordon and offer the same service to apprentices and trainees in the region.” A spokesman for training minister Peter Hall had not replied to the Independent’s call for comment when the paper went to press.

Toilet role GEELONG’S new mayor has joined other councillors in adopting a public toilet strategy as one of the few items of business in his first council meeting. Keith Fagg said the strategy aimed to provide a five-year plan for upgrading and maintaining toilets across the municipality.

Call for Superkidz to tri fun challenge CHILDREN of all abilities will enjoy fun and fitness in a tailored triathlon on Geelong’s waterfront in February. The Geelong Independent Superkidz Triathlon is seeking entrants aged seven to 13 for the event on Saturday, February 9. Children aged seven to 10 will compete in a mini-triathlon comprising a 100-metre swim, a threekilometre cycle and a 500m run. Children aged 11 to 13 will compete over a slightly longer course with a 200m swim, a 5km cycle and a 1km run. The Superkidz Triathlon will also include a Family Wave category for a family member to compete alongside a participating child under 10 on the shorter course.

The event will be part of a third annual Geelong Multi Sport Festival from February 8 to 10. Managing editor Tony Galpin said the Independent was rapt to be involved in the festival again through sponsorship of the Superkidz Triathlon. The event would encourage children to participate in sports and promote healthy lifestyles, he said. “As well as a fun day out on Geelong’s waterfront, the Superkidz Triathlon will be a great opportunity for children to have a go and find out whether they’d like to go further in this wonderful sport.” Each Superkidz participant receives a competitor’s T-short and a finisher’s medal.

Elite Geelong triathlete Renee Lane said the event was a “perfect mix” for all children. “I get such a buzz from the Superkidz event because it gives so many young local kids the chance to get out there and have some fun with their friends while doing some exercise.” A Carter Group Special Tri for people with disabilities will run in conjunction with the Superkidz event. Special tri participants can have a “buddy” to compete alongside them. Gordon finalises job cuts to hit 55 By NOEL MURPHY

GORDON TAFE will axe 55 jobs and 27 courses as it realigns its operations in response to a $14.6 million state funding cut, the institute has revealed. Gordon released its finalised cuts to the Independent on Wednesday, with the majority of the job losses in management and the courses from within sport and recreation, hospitality, retail and visual arts sectors. Chief executive officer Grant Sutherland said Gordon would allow students to finish second-year studies in affected courses and would continue offering its VET-in-Schools program. Gordon plans to offer 23 new courses next year in biotechnology, health, small business and community services. Mr Sutherland said the 55 job losses would include “some voluntary redundancies’’. He did not specify the number. The cuts would be across all areas and levels of the institute. The Gordon would continue offering more than 220 accredited courses and over 170 specialist short courses.

Fifteen courses were scheduled for delivery in neighbouring City of Wyndham and Gordon had increased the number of its on-line courses, Mr Sutherland said. “The overriding principle in these decisions has been to protect and maximise our core purpose in delivery of education and training and meeting industry and community needs,’’ he said. “This is our priority – as is staying true to our vision, mission and role as a public provider.’’ Mr Sutherland said the budget cuts required “difficult decisions to be made’’. Gordon had worked hard to achieve the “best outcomes possible’’ for its long-term sustainability, he said. Mr Sutherland stressed that despite the cuts, and in contrast to changes at other TAFEs, Gordon had retained its City and East Geelong campuses, libraries and training restaurants at both and disability support services. Mr Sutherland said Gordon had maintained its public provider role as best it could, notably with Geelong’s Northern Futures program, a presence in Colac and in assisting Geelong workers to find new jobs.

Cricket Australia’s Jacquie Hey told the Independent about her “lovely and uncomplicated life” growing up in Wallington. “There was zero to do except for sport – tennis, cricket and football. We used to go to Ocean Grove regularly and take the cricket sets to the beach. “If we didn’t have stumps we’d use the seaweed.” Ms Hey, a former managing director of Ericsson in four countries, was elected last month as Cricket Australia’s

Jobs safe in store shuffle ALL EMPLOYEES at Corio’s Bunnings store will keep their jobs when it closes for a new outlet at North Geelong, the company has announced. Bunnings said it would redeploy the 90 staff to the new store and others at Waurn Ponds and Torquay. The North Geelong outlet would

employ 180 workers for a net gain of 90 Bunnings jobs in the city. Bunnings said the North Geelong store would open in December and the Corio site would close in April. Bunnings Victorian state operations manager Simeon Boseley said the company was “really pleased” all Corio staff would retain jobs.

Mr Ballis features in a show that film company Chemical Media is pitching to stations in a bid to join the collector/picker reality TV genre proving popular with shows such as American Pickers, Hardcore Pawn and Cash Cowboys. Executive producer Tony Jackson confirmed Mr Ballis’s part in Finders Keepers. “We’ve got a show with Ian and we’re pitching it to broadcasters,” Mr Jackson told the Independent. “There’s no interest yet but we’re in talks.” The show was selling itself as a “modern day treasure hunt’’ in which eight of Australia’s top traders face off in a knockout competition putting their reputation on the line and their skills to the test. Traders have one day to use their wheeling and dealing skills to turn a $250 bankroll into a tasty profit.

Managed by Greening Australia (Vic) and supported by Shell and the City of Greater Geelong (CoGG), Limeburners Link involves the environmental rehabilitation of Limeburners Bay – achieved through the training of local residents in a Certificate II in Conservation and Land Management. Shell volunteers participated in a range of activities including planting indigenous trees, weeding and bird monitoring. Their combined effort helped improve the biodiversity and habitat values of this internationally recognised site.

GEELONG is literally abuzz as a combination of spring rain and warm weather sparks an outbreak of bee infestations, according to local apiarists. Edmond’s Honey owner John Edmond said bee swarming this year around the region was “extreme”. The insects were making a beeline for “large amounts of canola grown close to the urban areas,” Mr Edmond said. “Plus, the weather has caused rampant flowering of weeds and shrubs, so the bees have been breeding excessively. “It will get worse in the next month as the melaleucas come into flower with bottlebrushes.” Mr Edmond said spring produced swarming, in which hives filled with bees and honey and colonies split off to find alternative accommodation. “But this season’s swarming has been so prolific that many beekeepers have run out of (hive) boxes.” Ayrleigh Apiaries’ Evelyn Hill said he was busy as a bee keeping up with requests to remove swarms from Buzz off: Evelyn Hill with a bee-infested chest of drawers that has supplied 25kg of honey – with more to come. Swarms were appearing from Lara to Highton, with the season normally continuing until April, Mr Hill said. Abandoned properties often attracted swarms, which then hived off to other nearby houses, he said. “I can guarantee there is a hive in one in every 100 houses in any suburb in Geelong. “I’ve been getting calls left, right and centre to remove bees from walls, under roof cavities, even in drums or old wine barrels. “I’m even working on a chest of drawers where the bees got in at the back. I’ve taken out 25kg of honey and I’m still not finished.” Mr Hill said an average hive housed up to 40,000 bees, with as many as 90 per cent “stingers”. Geelong’s high number of unregistered hives worsened the problem, he said. “All beekeepers should register their beehives, especially as those with less than five hives get free registration online with the Department of Primary Industries. “If we get a bee disease incursion we need to be able to find all hives quickly for testing if we’re going to prevent it spreading.”

Roadsides are cleared in a systematic manner depending on the ability of the City staff to access the roadsides. Roadsides that are still to wet to be driven on are then cleared once the other roadsides have been completed. Some strategic roads may be cut a second time depending on a variety of factors. LONG GRASS/GRASS FIRES There is above average risk of grass fires for the coming season. Grass fires are just as dangerous as bush fires. They are fast moving. As grass is a fine fuel, fire burns through it faster than through forest. Flames can reach 10 metres high. There are some areas of private land around Geelong where grass is knee high. During fire season make sure your grass is cut and maintained to a maximum height of 10cm.

COUNCIL has threatened fines and increased patrols for residents parking on a grassed area to avoid accidents on Highton’s busy Leigh Rd. Leigh Rd’s Dan Mathieson said several residents with multiple vehicles used the grassed area because of the speed and volume of traffic on the narrow road. Mr Mathieson said he received two parking fines recently because council deemend the area a nature strip, despite a lack of driveways. Council’s response to his complaint was to warn of fines for parking on nature strips and extending the hours of parking inspectors for the area to 9pm, he said. Mr Mathieson asked council engineering staff to inspect the situation. “The two council personnel agreed there’s an issue with the flow of traffic that prevents parking on both sides of the street. They also said approval has been given for further housing construction in the estate and traffic volumes will only increase.” Mr Mathieson said he suggested council cut into the grassed area to create parking bays, with an interim measure of issuing nature strip parking permits.

Another Leigh Rd Resident, Karl Groves, said he struggled to find onstreet parking when family or friends visited. “The road is very unsafe due to the new volumes of traffic and the lack of width when cars park at the kerb. “Hopefully we can get some quick resolution on this and have parking bays installed as soon as possible before we have a major accident with the new bus route and the continuous trucks, trade vehicles and cars speeding up our street.” City of Greater Geelong community services general manager Jenny McMahon said parking officers went to the area several times following complaints from residents about vehicles parked on nature strips and the adjacent road reserve. Ward councillor Ron Nelson said he understood the issues, with the crest of Leigh Rd presenting a blind spot and a nearby bus stop exacerbating the problem. “Common sense would say residents should be able to park on the grass because it’is dangerous to park on the street at that point. “I would look to make that option available to residents, probably through parking bays and appropriate signage, and I’ll speak with city officers about that.”

Bus services will resume their normal routes from the Moorabool Street Bus Interchange when the roads are reopened. The club has been going 25 or 30 years with the same philosophy.” Okke dreamed of a huge hobby show combining the talents of all local interest clubs to demonstrate the depth of talents within the region.

“It would be great to show everyone what we can do. I’m sure it would generate a lot more interest.” Okke said timber would always be a significant part of building boats. “I have a soft spot for working with wood,” he confided, “because it’s easier to work with and a lot more forgiving.” Geelong Model Boat Club meets the first Sunday of each month at Deakin University’s Waurn Ponds campus lake. THE CONTENTS of many of Geelong’s man caves will be hauled into the bright light of day during Barwon Valley Wood Wrights’ exhibition on this weekend. Among the exhibits will be the intricate model boat work of Okke Jansma and his fellow Geelong Model Boat Club devotees. Okke is working on a model of the Geelong, a Fremantleclass patrol boat used by Royal Australian Navy on fisheries, immigration, customs and drug law enforcement operations. It’s his second model patrol boat, the first being a German version that saw active service during World War II. In fact, it was the sight of one of the menacing KM Schnellboot S205 patrol boats cruising along the canals of Okke’s country of birth, Holland, that first sparked his childhood admiration of watercraft. “I can recall asking my dad what that ship was and I’ve remembered it ever since,” Okke reminisced. After two attempts at retiring, Okke finally turned his hand to model boats. “I enjoy getting away from it all in the man cave. It’s lovely to have a hobby - a man’s gotta have a shed,” Okke declared. He described the model boat club as “a loose affiliation of kindred spirits” without the usual formalities and administrative du-

We did our best, as did our neighbours, but the bunnies won every time. I find it extraordinary that Department of Primary Industries (DPI) can fine property owners for rabbits, which were introduced to the area by Thomas and Elizabeth Ashton in the 19th Century. The rabbit-proof fence didn’t work. Why doesn’t DPI fine the estate of the Ashtons for its founders’ lack of environmental awareness? Gerry Danckert Torquay

Licensed to kill ANOTHER elderly driver in Geelong recently lost control of his car and caused damage and injury. I am an older driver with a 57-year accident-free driving record. When I feel I am no longer confident to drive I will surrender my licence before I make a fool of myself or even kill somebody. When an elderly driver can no longer tell the difference between the brake pedal and the gas pedal it is time to hand in their licence. Otherwise they give other capable older drivers a bad name and force authorities to introduce measures that make our lives more difficult by curtailing the use of motor cars. Far be it from me to belittle the impact of these accidents caused by older drivers but they are unintentional albeit regretful accidents and, unfortunately, each time the media has a field day with them. When young lead-footed petrol heads create havoc on our roads and kill each other by the dozen it is not accidental but a deliberate misuse of a motor car and a blatant disregard of road laws. Fagg has mandate, now all he needs is Jeff MAYOR Keith Fagg would be much better able to go into bat for his constituency with a regional flow-on by having a paid advocate who’s been there and done that rather than having to be handicapped by the impost of a myriad governance bureaucrats, councillors, committees and chambers. While local governance consultancy from time to time results in little more than appeasing councillors with pricey, weighty, glossy recommendations going nowhere, such monies would be well-spent by approaching Jeff Kennett to give Cr Fagg a bunk-up. The former premier has an interest in seeing through what he kick-started on the waterfront. He might also have discretionary time on his hands since relinquishing Hawthorn Football Club’s presidency and his hard-nosed persona would complement Cr Fagg with state, federal and overseas interfacing. Memorial defiled I WAS horrified when watching the Remembrance Day service in Canberra at the Australian War Memorial to see representatives of our former enemies - Japan and Germany - lay wreaths with our Prime Minister, Governor General and top armed forces personnel. I believe that these nations, which literally mur-

The context for Geelong is obvious: climate change, peak oil, financial instability, rising energy costs and job losses through the impending closure of three major industries and their associated businesses. Do we want to condemn new residents, many on low incomes, to cheap homes that cost the Earth to maintain? Geelong can lead the way with authentically low-cost, attractive, innovative housing design and construction, enabling residents to keep costs down for years to come - a win-win solution. Climate bull…t CLIMATE Change Minister Greg Combet had said in Melbourne that everything Tony Abbott has said about climate change was complete “bull…t”. Putting aside the inppropriate use of language by a minister of the Crown, Mr Combet would know a thing or two about bull crap, seeing as he practises the art as well as he does by relying on the cherrypicked data of the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The claims for climate change are not proven - they are merely assumptions based on computer modelling. In 1975 scientists warned of an impending ice age. Now they warn of serious global warming. This raises an interesting question: either the scientists in the ‘70s were a pack of dills or the present generation of doomsayers with global warming are. You can’t have it both ways. In his book, The Climategate Emails, John Costella points out a deliberate effort to steer thinking on climate in a certain direction. Mr Costella also alleges the data has been massaged to produce a certain conclusion. There is a wide gap between the data in the papers and the IPCC’s Summary for Policy Makers, which governments have uncritically accepted and which forms the basis of modern climate change legislation. Until the IPCC and its fellow travellers prove their assertions in the summary, any country would be unwise to spend billions of dollars trying to solve the alleged problem of global warming. Van arrives with lady’s ‘complexities’ By CHERIE DONNELLAN GEELONG’S Claudia Clark will draw on her professional stage experience in Australia and overseas for a local production of The Lady in the Van. Geelong Repertory Theatre said its production would be a “role of a lifetime” for Clark, who last appeared on the city’s stages as Alzheimer’s victim Daisy in Making Waves. Clark will play lead character Miss Shepherd who moves her mobile home into a quiet residential street until the council orders her out. A resident, writer Alan Bennett, invites Miss Shepherd to move her van into his garden where she recounts her life story to him over the course of 15 years. Geelong Repertory Theatre described her as “an unusual character, to say the least”. “She used to drive ambulances in the war, might have been a nun, sells pencils and pamphlets and has an unexplained aversion to piano music.” Clark described the role as “a challenge of a different kind”, featuring a “complex older personality with some very strange quirks’’. Tony Wright and Mike Ellis will both play Bennett, the latter narrating as he writes and the former appearing with Clark. Directed by Geoff Gaskill, The Lady in the Van will play 8pm on November 23, 24, 30 and December 1, 6, 7, 8, with matinees 2pm on November 25 and December 2, at Woodbin Theatre.

By CHERIE DONNELLAN LYING bedridden for a year unable to stand straight was blessing in disguise for Ryan Adamson. Now the 28-year-old frontman of Australian punk band Regular John, Adamson suffered a serious infection in his back after the insertion of metal rods inserted to correct his spinal hunch. While recuperating he bought vintage synthesisers to experiment with “weird sounds” that later formed a basis for his band’s latest album, Strange Flowers. “It was a pretty heavy time for me,” Adamson told the Independent. “I couldn’t really socialise or anything, so I saved my money and bought these old ‘70s keyboards. “I’ve always been into making weird sounds and when I started I just ran with it.” Adamson, bassist Caleb Goman , drummer Ryan McDonald and guitarist Miles Devine will play Lorne’s 20th annual Falls Music Festival this summer. Adamson promised a solid performance for Regular John’s first Falls appearance. “To play any gig is awesome,” he said. “If you play to one person I think you still owe to that person to play well. Having a whole festival of people is even better.” Adamson said the band would play songs from its new “Aussie psych-rock” album. The genre suited the band members’ adoration of science fiction, he said. “We’re all pretty cosmic cats.”

BACK UP: Regular John’s Ryan Adamson has a head for music. Adamson said co-songwriter Goman penned track Time Machine as a dedication to sci-fi novelist Philip K Dick. “We’re really into his stuff and Caleb wanted to incorporate something to do with him in the album, so we went with it.” Adamson especially enjoyed sharing songwriting duties with Gorman, he said. “Caleb’s amazing with words,” he enthused. “I’ve got these letters from when we were pen pals when we lived away from each other and even when I read them now I’m so stunned to remember that they’re written by a 14-year-old kid.”

1. In a large bowl mash the beans gently and season with salt and pepper to taste. 2. By hand or in a food processor dice the remaining ingredients (except the egg) finely. 3. Form about 1-1/2 tbs of mixture at a time into rissoles. Set aside on a large tray and refrigerate for about 30mins. 4. Lightly oil a large fry pan and cook the rissoles in batches over medium heat for 4-5 mins each side until golden and cooked through. 5. Launched in October 2005 it had a turbocharged version of the 2.3-litre engine to give it plenty of oomph off the line. It was discontinued with the launch the second-generation Mazda6 series, a victim of its smaller, nimbler brother, the

Mazda3 MPS. Check for that the engine starts promptly and settles into a steady idle within a few seconds of kicking over. Listen for a knocking noise from the universal joints inside the front wheels. Turn the steering wheel to full lock at very slow speeds to the right and the left. An automatic transmission that’s slow to go into gear, or that hunts up and down through the ratios could be due for a service, or even an overhaul. A manual gearbox that’s reluctant to go into gear is also likely to need attention. Fast changes from third to second are often the first to play up.

The Cats won the toss and elected to bowl first in a decision that would have left many scratching their heads after an opening stand of 131 by the Prahran openers. Adam Di Giacomo, Cam Alford and Meyrick Buchanan all toiled hard for two wickets each on a tough day for bowlers. Corey Gallagher and mate Andrew Dellaca harassed the fish off Clifton Springs, catching quality fish in each of three outings using soft plastics exclusively. I also fished soft plastics off the Springs last weekend, taking a bag limit of fish to 60cm. Gulp four-inch minnows produced the best results. Bait performed well for Owen Lundy, although he spent many hours on the outer-harbour with little success until he moved in close to St Helens. Owen caught two fish in quick succession in a great result for first snapper of the season. Greg Welsh also fished the innerharbour for excellent results after his sounder lit up with baitfish on the channel line directly out from North Shore rocks. Greg quickly deployed two rods baited with pilchard to catch three fish to 8.3kg in the following hour. Many anglers worked Wilson Spit for inconsistent results, mainly due to the fish holding up in the deep water of the channel. Captures were better nearby at the old chair site where pilchard and fresh squid baits performed well. Kevin Hunter and Jim Robinson did well trolling Sebile deep-diving lures for snapper. They had a double hook-up on Saturday morning and landed both, the biggest a little over 5kg. Noel Henry was again successful on 20m line directly out from St Leonards, catching and releasing over a dozen fish in a little under three hours on squid baits.Nathan Greg trolled deep-diving lures between Bird Rock and the quarries where he caught pike to more than 1m and over 3kg. Nathan also landed four

snapper around 45cms length, using a 65mm Sebile Rattler long lip. The bays held some huge shoals of salmon, although they were quite small. Patient anglers found some fish pushing 1.5kg around structure such as pylons, piers and reefs. Perry Harman spun the rocks at North Shore on Monday’s evening low tide for two 80cm pike. Both took 20g laser lures,

which are perfect for this location. Shaun Pritchard also found pike on lures while working Geelong’s waterfront on Tuesday morning between Cunningham Pier and Yarra St. Whiting were caught at St Leonards and Queenscliff, with the best reports coming on the morning tides. Pippies and fresh squid were the standout baits.

Edwards Point produced whiting, leatherjacket, garfish and salmon on the run-up and run-off from high tide. Squid captures were inconsistent. Anyone seeking squid should presently work very shallow inshore grass beds with small jigs. Flathead were taken in 10m to 15m of water between Portarlington and St

Leonards. Anglers drifting with snapper or surf snatchers enjoyed the best results. The Breamlea end of Black Rock produced snapper around 1kg in reasonable numbers late in the afternoon and into the evening. Paul Clarke used plenty of berley to extract carp from the Barwon River at Fyans Park. Paul used unweighted corn and bread baits to grass six fish, the best estimated at more than 6kg. Ray Caruana fished Lake Tooliorook where he caught two brown and one rainbow trout while trolling the Tassie Devil lures. Damian Holt had similar results also whole trolling Tassie Devils at the lake. Geelong fly angler Keith Dowel spent the weekend at Lake Fyans where the fishing was tough. His persistence was eventually rewarded with a well-conditioned brown trout, taken on a small nymph-pattern fly. Ballarat’s Lake Wendouree remained productive, with trout and redfin taken by all methods of angling. Fly should start to excel as the conditions warm and the insects start to hatch. Harrison O’Keefe returned from a few days at Lake Eildon where plenty of small trout were taken while trolling. However, yellowbelly really made the trip worthwhile, with Harrison using Jackall TN60 lures hard up against to catch nine fish to 4.2kg. This weekend’s evening high tides should be ideal for snapper on the inner and outer harbours. Try the spoil grounds in Stingaree Bay or off the quarries. Anyone wanting to fish along the channel line should ensure they cast into the channel without anchoring with it, which is dangerous and illegal. Freshwater anglers should find Lake Tooliorook best, with Lake Elingamite a worthwhile alternative for anglers with small boats.
