Pair ride a wave of support to raise $8200 for cancer
New Homes&Land Homes Land
By MICHELLE HERBISON PLANTING piggy banks in friends’ homes proved a successful fundraising method for a Point Lonsdale couple in the lead-up to the Ride to Conquer Cancer last month. Cancer survivors Shirley Lasham and Ron North raised more than $8200 toward a record $6.2 million total for Melbourne’s Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. The pair gave piggy banks to friends in January to donate a small amount weekly until the October event. “It was an easy way for people to contribute on a weekly basis because most of our friends are retirees,” Ms Lasham said. “It’s amazing how nine months adds up.” Ms Lasham said the gruelling 200km in two days from Albert Park to Healesville and back was “brilliant”, “challenging” and “humbling”. “It was very emotional at times. A lot of people were riding for loved ones lost and in chemotherapy treatment at the moment.” The cancer experiences of friends and family inspired Ms Lasham and Mr North to train for the fundraising ride. “We just thought that because we’re healthy and so lucky the best thing we can do is raise funds for much-needed research,” Ms Lasham said. The keen cyclists’ training involved gradually building up their distances for many months, she said. “While riding I especially thought of those I know who are undergoing chemo treatment including Ron’s niece, local friends, a fellow camper we met in Brunswick Heads and dear little twoyear-old Loui with leukaemia.”
LONG Island Homes’ Lantau reflects the builder’s emphasis on quality and coastal design cues.
Built for modern families LONG Island Homes has opened two stunning display homes at Armstrong Creek’s Warralily Estate. Long Island is finally calling Geelong home with the opening of the singlestorey Taya,( 32 squares) and two-storey Lantau (41 squares). Both homes boast plenty of contemporary features to cater for modern family
lifestyles. Each home features ample storage, old-fashioned-size bedrooms, spacious utility room laundries, studies for parents and children to share and kitchens that double as entertaining spaces. The Lantau in particular is perfect for large families with coastal lifestyles. The two-storey home features five bedrooms, a contemporary kitchen and a
large open-plan living space flowing on to a fully-covered outdoor area. The single-storey Taya is just as impressive. A key area of importance to Long Island homes is energy efficiency, with an abundance of natural light in every home on top of the usual 6+ star energy rating. Managing director Craig Delaney
says Long Island Homes has flexibility and takes time to identify each family’s individual needs. “You know, I can’t think of a time we have not tweaked a home in some shape or form for one of our clients,” he says. “We get it right the first time rather than have clients feel they’ve compromised.”
Long Island Homes displays are open 11am to 5pm daily at Silky Oak Blvd, at the Warralily Estate, Connewarre – just 80 metres from the land sales office. More information on the display is available by phoning 1800 60 40 11 or visiting www.longislandhomes.com.au

MP attacks VicRoads over ‘inaction’
Rotunda roadblock By MICHELLE HERBISON VICROADS is preventing City of Greater Geelong from determining the future use of Portarlington’s rotunda following renovations, according to state Member for Bellarine Lisa Neville. Ms Neville said she had written to VicRoads to “get to the crux of” the inaction but would soon bring the matter to parliament if it remained unresolved. The previous Labor government provided funds for a streetscape of Portarlington’s main street, a renovation of the rotunda and the blocking of an adjacent road to create a “town
square-type feel”, Ms Neville said. The Independent reported in August that rotunda tenant Bellarine Community Health op shop had unsuccessfully applied for a five-year extension on its lease. Bellarine Community Health chief executive officer John Fendyk said council had kept the op shop on a month-by-month lease ever since. “We’ve upgraded our garage as a bit of pre-empting in case we don’t have access to the rotunda in the future,” Mr Fendyk said. VicRoads south-western regional director William Tieppo said the rotunda was partially located within a
VicRoads arterial road reserve, which the City would occupy on a commercial lease. “VicRoads is discussing longerterm options with council, such as transferring this part of the road and declaring it a municipal road, which would make council the coordinating road authority for the relevant land.” Mr Tieppo said council could determine the rotunda’s future because VicRoads was “not seeking any compensation or costs” for transferring the land. Ms Neville said VicRoads had “made the issue difficult”.
“I can’t see why VicRoads can’t just resolve this. We’re two years down the track. “Sense should prevail because this is a community asset. Council shouldn’t have to purchase it and VicRoads should just move on.” Ward councillor Lindsay Ellis said council was in discussions with VicRoads. “It has to go through the proper government process of closing a road. I live in the town and I know what the issues are now, so we’ll try and get them moved on.” Cr Ellis said a community group was interested in using the rotunda.

Science meets style: achieving the perfect fit Traditional manual methods for measuring spectacle lenses to fit an individual frame and face leave plenty of room for human error. This can result in a pair of glasses which may not give the crisp, clear vision your optometrist intended. AccuFit, an exclusive digital eyewear measurement system used by Ella (pictured) and the team at OPSM Waurn Ponds, precisely measures a range of parameters from facial features to inter-pupillary distance to define a completely individual frame and lens fit. Measurements are made to an accuracy of 0.1mm. OPSM Waurn Ponds optometrist Rowan Prendergast said, “Our latest and most popular lenses are digitally customised to suit the individual. These lenses account for frame curvature, tilt, width, depth and distance from the wearer’s eyes. Now our fitting measurements are five times more precise, enabling us to further enhance the visual solutions we offer to our customers.” Anyone who wears strong prescription glasses has experienced how challenging it can be to see themselves when trying on new frames. AccuFit provides a high-definition digital Virtual Mirror to allow customers to compare different looks from different angles. A LensSimulator tool also allows viewing of lens simulations to see what a difference the right lens makes in varied environments. ‘Our constant focus is to provide exclusive, innovative and world-class service to our customers. We are proud to continue to pioneer new technology in eye care and eye wear for our community,’ said Rowan. Eye checks at OPSM Waurn Ponds can be booked online at opsm.com.au or by phoning 5243 9288.

Boats, kids in row on safety By NOEL MURPHY AN UGLY brawl has erupted over beachgoer safety at Torquay’s Fishermans Beach. Torquay Angling Club boss Steve Burton and Great Ocean Road Coastal Committee chief Richard Davies have locked horns over concerns about boats and swimmers mixing at the busy beach. Mr Burton also accused the committee of failing to heed repeated warnings about the dangers of encouraging beachgoers to park “at their peril” in an area where anglers parked vehicles with boat trailers. Mr Burton suggested the committee was risking the lives of children using the beach amid boats and vehicles. Fishermans Beach’s boat ramp area has become increasingly busy over the past few years, with the committee recently adding a community room and a kiosk to the site.
Is it time for a new mattress?
Safety: Richard Davies. Mr Burton said forecasts of an influx of new residents at Torquay and nearby Armstrong Creek would add thousands of additional water users to the Surf Coast. “It’s an infrastructure issue,’’ he said. “Torquay has a burgeoning population. You can’t leave it as a backwater, you’ve got to do some serious work and the first thing is to make the (boat launching area) a restricted zone. “What a lot of people don’t understand is that you have 30 to 40 metres of dry sand to cover when retrieving boats and this has to be done at speed.
“This will be an issue of life and death for somebody.’’ Mr Davies said signs at the site warned of the dangers. Marine Safety Victoria had been invited to check the precinct to ensure safety aspects were covered, he said. “The (coastal) committee takes its responsibility very seriously about public safety and risk management,’’ he said. “Appropriate signage is in place and we’re arranging additional signage as well - that is already in train.’’ Mr Davies said the committee was aware the area would continue attracting more users. “We have to be very mindful of anglers and beachgoers and that they’re aware - it’s incumbent on everyone.’’ Mr Davies said the car park was limited to anglers with boat trailers on weekends.

Next time you are training, consider this.. Ask yourself some key questions. Is the training that I am undertaking really getting me to my goals, or is it merely killing time? Do I really feel that I challenge my mind and body during each session? Effective training never needs to be questioned. You feel it instantly, and with it brings great mental and physical release. It should be something you look forward to doing, rather than seen as a chore. Training with intensity and purpose is something anyone can do. Ability, goals and kilometres covered may differ between individuals, but benefits gained do not. So next time you hit a session, hit it with purpose. At least then you can walk away tired, but proud!

LOVE letters aren’t usually like this but the note Newtown’s Jenny and Bruce Richmond wrote to their two sons, who died 25 years ago, is as moving as any – and as heart-warming. The Richmonds live with their grief every day. But others live on because of their boys. Darren and Adam Richmond, then aged 21 and 18, were just setting out on adulthood when it all came to shattering halt in a Melbourne car accident. Their parents penned a moving memoriam last week.“Adam, all your organ recipients are still alive. I believe you both are giving these fortunate people so much encouragement to keep going because they were given another chance at life,’’ the couple wrote. Ms Richmond said Adam’s organs went to four people, giving them and their families the extraordinary, precious gift of life. “His heart went to a mother in Sydney. Her heart was transplanted by Dr Victor Chang just before he was murdered – I believe it was his last operation,’’ Ms Richmond told the Independent. “A little three-month-old girl with three weeks to live received his liver. “A 38-year-old father of 11 received a kidney – he’s now a grandfather. “The other kidney went to a 14-year-old boy.’’ Mr Richmond explained that Darren died at the scene. Adam was pronounced brain dead at hospital where

By MICHELLE HERBISON PATIENTS with “less-urgent” conditions are presenting at Geelong Hospital’s emergency department in numbers beyond population growth despite more doctors in the area, according to a study. The joint study between Barwon Health and Barwon Medicare Local, representing Geelong GPs, found that triage category four (semi-urgent) and five (nonurgent) patient presentations were increasing 10 per cent annually. Barwon Health spokesperson Kate Nelson said the study findings had sparked plans for the two organisations to launch an awareness campaign next year on options for after-hours medical care. “It relates to the individual’s own perception of the urgency of their condition and where they
believe they should go for medical attention,” Ms Nelson said. “The Geelong region has had a substantial growth of GP numbers. The issue here is awareness of what alternatives are available, not what GPs are available.” A study summary document showed 83 per cent of a sample of 433 semi and non-urgent patients who visited the emergency department believed they needed immediate attention. Forty-six per cent attended because it was “too complex to see a GP”, while 41 per cent were unsure where else to go. Twenty-four per cent of patients said they were unable to “get into” their GP and 24 per cent were avoiding a long wait for an appointment. Twenty-six per cent visited the emergency department because it was free, they said.
Ms Nelson said bulk-bill and private clinics near Geelong Hospital treated “less-urgent” patients but Barwon Medicare Local would need to “broaden the availability” of after-hours GPs next year. “Theoretically, if patients choose to go to a GP we could free up resources in the emergency department to treat more-complex presentations more quickly,” she said. Geelong Hospital performance indicators to October 29 showed the 50 per cent of triage four patients seen on time fell short of the 70 per cent target. Barwon Medicare Local chief executive officer Jason Trethowan was unavailable for comment before the Independent went to press.

Dual-award DVD preserves history
COACH TOURING OFFERS!
By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A GROUP of secondary students’ DVD on the construction of the Great Ocean Road has won two state awards. Lorne-Airey’s Inlet College VCAL students make the DVD using archival photos from Lorne’s historical society. The DVD won a VCAL partner achievement award and a Victorian Community History Award. The idea for the pot-holed history of the iconic road was born when the historical society realised its valuable collection was at risk from a major catastrophe such as a bushfire. Society volunteer Peter Spring said the group had no space to exhibit the collection, either. “We wanted to digitise the collection to safeguard it and give us more options for displaying the work,” Mr Spring said. “We called the project Freeze Frame and we enlisted the help of the college in scanning and cataloguing the collection. The school was enthusiastic, the kids were

Competitor in markets move TWO FORMER Mill Markets sites will create competition for the brand’s Newcomb operations under new ownership revealed this week. Williamstown’s John and Robyn Lah will operate vintage markets at the sites in North Geelong and Brougham St under a new name. The move follows months of negotiations on the business and numerous sites after former boss Ian Ballis plunged Mill Markets into administration. The Independent reported last week that Geelong antiques dealer Mark Ward had bought the Mill Markets business with plans to “centralise” Geelong operations at Bellarine Hwy, Newcomb. Administrator Sellers Muldoon Benton’s said Mr Ward would
have sole rights to the Mill Markets brand. Mr Ward would also continue operating Mill Markets at Daylesford and Ballarat. He declined an offer to purchase the North Geelong and Brougham St sites to avoid “too much dilution” in the town. Mr Lah, a Mill Markets stallholder for 10 years, was optimistic Geelong had the capacity for multiple vintage retailers. “You could call it competition but the more the better,” he said. “(North Geelong) is fairly new but people are coming here from word of mouth and our little sign out the front. “I can really see it growing. We’ll probably get new Melbourne clientele coming in here, too.” Mr Lah said he would con-
tinue to run the businesses under a similar model to Mill Markets, with stallholders selling antiques and bric-a-brac on commission or renting space. Mr Lah, who operates with his wife a Bam Bam Vintage store in Williamstown, would also consider bringing a costume shop to the North Geelong site. Mr Ward was “more than happy” with Mr Lah operating a similar business at the two locations. Individual stallholders at Mr Lah’s sites could “make their own decision” to stay or move to Newcomb, Mr Ward said. “I won’t be influencing them at all. “Newcomb’s just about full now anyway. When I took it over it was about 75 per cent full. “In just our first week of operations we increased overall takings by 13 per cent.”

RUNNING 50km in the rain at night was one of Geelong’s Tym Kacprzak’s “crazier” training sessions for a 24-hour endurance event in America this week. Mr Kacprzak has been physically and mentally preparing himself for the ice, mud and electric shocks he and mate Jason Lydom will endure during the World’s Toughest Mudder competition in the aftermath of Hurrican Sandy in New Jersey. The duo qualified for the 24hour challenge after finishing in the top five per cent of Phillip Island and Glenworth Valley’s 20km courses. A factsheet anticipated that worldwide participation in Tough Mudder events this year would increase 20 times on the initial numbers in 2010. “Designed by British Special Forces, Tough Mudder tests strength, stamina, mental grit and camaraderie,” the factsheet said. Mr Lydom, a personal trainer, said Tough Mudder was a challenge and an adrenaline rush. “We’ve both been bitten by the bug a bit. For me I like to show my clients they can attempt anything. “You get to do things that were fun when you were a kid again like swinging off ropes, playing in mud and ice and jumping four metres into a creek or river.” Mr Lydom said the duo would start the event at 10am November 18 in light running gear then

$505m building bounty for city
INTERNATIONAL FLAIR AT OBERON Students at Oberon High School have recently experienced a diverse range of international relations, with the focus over recent weeks centred around international visitors and cultural language trips. Students in Year 10 studying Indonesian have just returned from a trip to Malaysia where they used their language skills to chat with locals and bargain at markets. Based in Kuala Lumpur, the group participated in many cultural activities. A highlight was attending Malaysia Day Celebrations at the Pure Life Society where students presented a large donation from their fundraising to a local orphanage.
By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN THE VALUE of permits for building and construction in City of Greater Geelong increased 23 per cent in the past financial year, according to state planning department figures. The total value of permit applications rose to $505 million, compared to $409 million the previous year. However, new permit applications dropped 3.7 per cent, from 1581 to 1522. The average cost of works per application rose 14 per cent to $304,635 from $267,760 the previous year. Authorities approved 906 dwellings and 145 subdivision allotments. The City’s take from applica-
At the same time a group of students from Years 10–11 studying Japanese were visiting Genkai High School, Oberon’s sister school for almost 25 years, in Fukuoka province on the island of Kyushu. Attending classes, host family visits, and of course practising their Japanese, were highlights of this experience with visits to Tokyo, Hiroshima and Kyoto. Not to be left out, students studying German were themselves hosting visitors from Oberon’s sister school near Marburg, Germany. These students had the opportunity to share many aspects of the Australian lifestyle, including AFL Grand Final Day, the Great Ocean Road and surfing. As one German student commented at the farewell, “It has been great to experience school life at Oberon and meet new friends. And we loved wearing the uniform.” The year will finish with a group of students travelling to Cambodia with World Challenge to experience a very different culture and assist at a Cambodian orphanage school on a community project. Oberon would also like to extend congratulations to school captain Stevie Nuss-Soeharto who was the recipient of the prestigious RMIT German scholarship at a recent banquet at the Park Hyatt in Melbourne. Stevie will travel to Germany for a 10-week all expenses paid study tour after her final Year 12 exams in November.
but there’s still good activity out there. “We don’t have a frantic pace of development but we’ve still got decisions being made to invest. “Interest rates are off their highs, so there’s a bit of encouragement for good projects that stack up. “I’m confident about Geelong’s economic outlook and I can see steady growth for the next three years.” Borough of Queenscliffe permit applications were down 16 per cent from 187 to 156 while total value rose 25 per cent to $24.2 million. Surf Coast applications dropped 23 per cent, from 1,066 to 814, with the value of works falling 20 per cent to $94 million.
tion fees dropped 6.5 per cent, from $980,409 to $916,637. Council planning portfolio holder Rod Macdonald said a couple of big projects skewed the figures. “The St John of God project is huge, that’s between $80 and $100 million and it accounts for the lower permit numbers with higher value.” Cr Macdonald said a national credit squeeze had also affected applications, with developers pursuing fewer projects. “Projects are still happening but banks have tightened up on the value of projects, so developers have to put up more equity. “The volume builders are still going well, although some of the smaller ones are finding it tough,

ONE OF Geelong’s longest-running fundraisers has attracted the cream of Geelong’s sports talent. Geelong Cats coach, Chris Scott, players Tom Hawkins and Steve Johnson and Melbourne Vixens star Tegan Caldwell will hit the fairways in an annual Give Where You Live golf classic. The capacity field for Give Where You Live’s major charity fundraiser will help build on $1 million already raised over 21 years. Organising committee chairman Gary Hill expected another successful event. “Every year has been a winner in terms of raising much-needed funds for Give Where You Live. This year should be no exception,” he said. “We estimate we will finish the day with another $80,000 for people who need it most.” The 21st annual E&S Trading Golf Classic will be at Torquay’s The Sands on November 12.

Dry times for region
1053943-KG45-12
1051646-JL45-12
VERY low rainfall characterised October in the Geelong region. The Breakwater racecourse weather station only recorded 16.2mm for the month in contrast to the long-term average of 51.3mm. Most of the area, from the Bellarine Peninsula to the Otways region, recorded less than 70 per cent of its normal rainfall as part of a state-wide phenomenon for the month. Only Birregurra, 60mm, had close to its average 65mm. Rain was recorded on only 10 days compared to the October average of 14. As well as Geelong’s ever-present rain shadow, much of the mini-drought was caused by a predominance of cold, dry air from the south and southwest and originating from Antarctic regions where sea ice has recently experienced a massive increase. A more-optimistic outlook is expected from later next month, according to private forecasters. But, despite the low result, the region’s water catchments were still at 97 per cent of capacity last week.
Under
the
weather Lindsay Smail
West Barwon Reservoir was 98 per cent full and Wurdi Boluc Reservoir 99 per cent. Regardless of the dry month, Geelong’s rain is still above the normal for the year, with 550mm compared to 527mm. Average daily maximum temperatures were higher than average as well in October, due mainly to the last two days of the month when they exceeded 30C. Minimums averaged 8.2C, which equated to exactly the average for the Geelong area, factoring in the site change from the former airport monitoring site. Overall, the monthly average was .3C warmer than the long-term average.

GEELONG’S keen walkers are being asked to step out with a purpose in an inaugural Steps for Independence as part of Spinal Cord Awareness week. TAC staff are supporting the fundraiser for Independence Australia’s psychology and counselling service, helping individuals and families overcome the trauma of a spinal cord injury. TAC’s Amanda Bavin said staff wanted to participate because road accidents were the most common cause of spinal cord injuries. “Geelong people commonly
take thousands of steps daily and take almost every one of them for granted,” Ms Bavin said. Walkers could register for the event online by forming a group to meet and step out on midday November 16, she said. Spinal Cord Awareness week includes Accessibility Weekend on November 17 and 18, with free entry to Geelong’s National Wool Museum and SurfWorld Torquay for people in wheelchairs and their carers. people hang onto their cash, some don’t take risks and others do.” Dion said everyone grew up with different beliefs about money and how it should be used. “Playing Cashflow can be a bit of fun and you can take from it what you want but it’s also an opportunity to learn about different wealth strategies. “Most people don’t try things in real life because they’re afraid of doing something wrong. “But the game provides a safe environment where you can ask all those questions. “If you fail in the game the worst thing you have done is lose a game. If you do that in real life there are more serious consequences.” Dion said the game encouraged players to become more willing to try different strategies.

“You can test what works and see other people’s strategies. Playing Cashflow can change people’s financial behaviour,” he said. The game has two versions: a 101 beginner level and 202 advanced. “The point of the game is to get out of the rat race, gaining enough money to cover expenses so you no longer need a job,” Dion said. “It tests the way you see money and challenges people on how to make that dream possible.” Dion said he was keen to attract more players because the game becomes more productive for all with greater numbers. The game, for two to six players, takes about two hours and the club provides everything for a $10 cost. The club meets on the last Thursday of every month at 6.30 pm at the South Barwon Community Centre, 33 Mt Pleasant Rd, Belmont. Dion said prospective players could phone him on 0413 386 575.

ANYONE who’s even been stumped by a cash flow statement or tossed aside a calculator in budgetary frustration will be at home in the Cashflow Club. The club turns the mystique of finance and investment into a game, based on the best-seller wisdom of Rich Dad Poor Dad author Robert Kiyosaki. Geelong organiser Dion Matchan said the fledgling Geelong club was like “monopoly on steroids”. The board game uses many of the items commonly used in finance and budgeting and turns them into easy-to-understand game icons. “For instance, the game sheet is a financial record, with income and expenses and a balance sheet. “It’s all based on concepts around money and wealth and teaches players financial principles. “A lot of people don’t know much about finance and budgeting, even if they have an investment property. “You play the game pretty much as you deal with money in your day-to-day life. GEELONG Animal Welfare Society will lock media out of a meeting at which it plans to expel up to a dozen life members and former directors. Legal letters have told targeted members they face alleged breaches of society rules including negligence, mishandling, cruelty, poor practice, abusing animals about to be euthanased, killing some in front of other animals, sedative overdoses and inadequate record-keeping. Other accusations relate to legal and compliance requirements and to management issues. A spokesman for the members facing expulsion said the GAWS action was in bad faith. The spokesman said the “headline allegations” failed to specify instances, conduct, persons, standards or alleged breaches. He challenged the society over its media “trepidation”. The meeting is scheduled for November 23 at an as-yet unspecified venue.

Letters Fund solar panels
Bills keep rising
Big spend on roads
LEIGH Adamson (letters 2/11/12) believes the uptake of solar panels is “a quiet revolution that will usher in a future without dirty coal-burning power stations”. Every home in Australia should have solar panels funded by the carbon tax, which would possibly achieve more than a pension increase. This would also help save our farmland from coal mining, although most coal is exported. The ALP should support an export industry in solar panels instead of coal to stop the destruction of farm land by coal mining for the sake of future generations. Kevin Guinane Cheringhap
I AM amused whenever I read letters the virtues of installing solar panels and how they could cut power bills to nothing. I am reminded every three months just how efficient we have all been in cutting back our water use and how we are now not paying so much for our water. Pity how the other costs have gone up, though, so our total water bills are no cheaper. Are people stupid? If we cut back on electricity from the mains do we think the power companies will cut all the other costs? They still have to provide and maintain the power line infrastructure and guess who’s going to keep paying for that. Take another look at your next Barwon Water bill and weep. T Pope, Whittington
THE lack of road maintenance under the previous Labor government has meant underlying issues with the condition of Victorian roads were not exposed during nearly a decade of drought. After a number of major floods and two years of wetter-than-normal weather there has been far greater road maintenance required than anticipated, so we’ve directed another $45 million in fixing the problems. This takes the Victorian Coalition Government’s Road Asset Management budget for 2012/2013 to $432.9 million - more than Labor ever provided in a year. We will target roads where repair is needed most. Ted Baillieu, Premier of Victoria

Nice lights, shame about transport AS Kardinia Park’s Simmonds Stadium prepares for its first historic night match of the 2013 AFL season one dark question still lingers. How will fans get home after the match if there is no public transport on a Saturday night? Benders and McHarry’s bus services do not run on Saturday nights, V/Line’s last train into Melbourne is
at 10.25pm from South Geelong Station and hailing a taxi is hard enough as it is. What should be a historic night for Geelong Football Club could become a catastrophic night for many Cats fans when they cannot access public transport. Billy Deikos Grovedale

Bunny bullies down on the farmer MY wife and I own a small farm at Freshwater Creek, which is a great place to live but for the past few years has had rabbits in plague proportions. With our closest neighbours we tried to thin them out with some success. Then in January authorities took a hand with a dedicated plan for all landowners on the Thompson Creek to eradicate rabbits. Unfortunately, overseeing the plan was Department of primary Industries (DPI). Officers handed out management plans to some and not others. The plan was doomed to failure immediately because only a few landowners were targeted. The notices were impossible to fulfil, as DPI well knew, and many of us were fined. Many chose to go to court.
My wife and I worked 208 hours on our management notice and were still fined. Representation to the Primary Industries Minister was answered devoid of compassion and understanding. Pleas by affected landowners have been disregarded. All of us have been intimidated, threatened, bullied and fined by DPI officers, while State Government is raising revenue. I am so disappointed with the Government’s performance on this and other issues confronting Victorians that I put a notice in a newspaper last month inviting voters to create a vote of no confidence in State Government and to bring about its instant dismissal. ’80s enough for ‘retro’ rockers By CHERIE DONNELLAN
Blasts from past: Absolutely 80s’ ™ Dale Ryder, Brian Mannix and Scott Carne.
EIGHTIES pop singer Scott Carne is promising Geelong a wave of “real hair” and “real music” this months. The frontman of former Australian group Kids in the Kitchen will line up with other legends of Australian rock in his Absolutely 80s “musical extravaganza”. Carne will be joined on stage at Deakin University’s Waterfront Cafe by fellow ’80s icons Brian Mannix, of Uncanny X-Men and Boom Crash Opera’s Dale Ryder. Kids in the Kitchen had Australian hits with singles such as Bitter Desire, Boom Crash Opera had its own share of fame with songs including Onion Skin and several Uncanny X-Men tracks charted highly, including Everybody Wants to Work and 40 Years. Carne said the audience at the November 18 show would end up “blissfully stuck in the ’80s time machine”. “We’re recreating the sound and the experience of the ‘80s as opposed to performing an unplugged version,” Carne explained. “We’re being true to the music. Eighties music doesn’t translate if you’re trying to do a different version because it’s all keyboards and big production. “You’ve got to do the real thing.”
Carne said the “retro” appeal of the ’80s also brought Gen Y audiences to the show but it was still “a lot of fun for people who grew up with us”. He chuckled remembering how the singers’ older fan base “go mad” at their shows. “They get right up the front and are dancing the whole time,” Carne said enthusiastically. “It’s awesome for us – we feel like Manpower but without the abs.” Carne said he Mannix and Ryder enjoyed “taking the mickey” out of one another on stage. “I think we’re funnier and taking ourselves less seriously these days but we’re still serious about putting on a good show.” Carne called Mannix a “naughty boy” for instigating much of the on-stage humour and “shenanigans”, although each performer brought their own wit to the show. He was keen to point out that the show would not “belittle” the ‘80s. “I think being able to do these shows has made us appreciate our careers even more. “It’s a situation where we get to stand back from our heyday careers and remember it and relive the fun side of performing – without the dodgy managers,” he joked.

A JAZZ Australia soiree at Queenscliff on Sunday will reunite two legends of the genre. Celebrated jazz violinist George Washingmachine will reunite with long-time musical collaborator and guitarist Ian Date. Both musicians had a high-profile partnership at jazz festivals throughout Australia, Europe and Asia for many years along with regular appearances on The Ray Martin Show. Their collaboration ended when Date migrated to Ireland in 2002. Since then they have rarely crossed paths, so the Queensland show will be a joyous occasion. Washingmachine will fly in from Sydney to join Ian Date and his brother, Nigel, on second guitar, along with Melbourne bassist Howard Cairns, for the show in Queenscliff’s Uniting Church.

AN AUSTRALIAN Securities and Investment Commission (ASIC) study has discovered that Australian consumers lack understanding of the products they buy when planning ahead for funerals. The research suggested that people would settle with the first product they came across instead of looking at value for money or taking long-term costs into account. Funeral insurance seems to be the main discussion point when planning ahead but not for good reason. Consumer group Choice described funeral insurance as “junk insurance”, noting that premiums can add up to several times the benefit families receive. However, other options are available, with Choice describing pre-paid funerals and funeral bonds as “smarter alternatives”. Tuckers Funeral & Bereavement Service will open its doors at various locations around Geelong from November 12 to 16 to help educate the community on the alternatives. Tuckers will provide free information about funeral plans, with talks covering topics such as pre-paid funerals, funeral bonds, general information about the funeral care process in Victoria and details on the company’s services they provide. Tuckers Funeral & Bereavement Service’s Michele Van Liessum said the business has been serving the community for over 125 years.

A NEW owner and a makeover have given The Yardz Hotel at Geelong West an impressive edge. Proprietor Helen Kenny has teamed up with ongoing manager Kate Martin and chef Natasha Bellamy to give customers the best experiences at The Yardz. “We’re not taking anything off the menu, we’re just adding to it with dishes like parmesan-crusted salmon, pork belly and fresh and hot seafood platters in the restaurant,” Helen says. Helen’s husband Russell’s 30 years as a butcher ensures The Yardz’ steaks are top-quality.
“The meat’s perfection or it goes back,” Helen laughs. The Yardz has added a range of cheaper bar meals on top of the existing menu; old-fashioned favourites including roasts, corned beef, lambs fry and bacon, sausages and mash and salmon patties. “They’re $12 and upwards now so they’re really good priced country-cooked meals for workers or pensioners to cater for families who want a budget ,” Helen says. The Yardz weekly favourites will remain, including Tuesday’s ’$12.50 pot and parmi’ or ’$16
pot and porterhouse’ night and ‘$13 Round the World Parmis’ on Sunday. Sport lovers will appreciate The Yardz addition of Fox Sports showing both inside and outside the venue. The Yardz’ back beer garden now provides a fabulous, private venue for functions, with new furniture, heating, a TV, a jukebox and blinds to protect from the weather. Helen says she has 20 years of experience in hospitality and catering.

Stay cool and save with tint WINDOW films are an easy, affordable answer to reduce those energy bills and make your house more sustainable. Energy-saving window film is one of the most effective passive solar devices available to home owners. Window tinting improves the energy efficiency of homes by reflecting, absorbing and re-radiating solar energy, helping to keep the heat out in summer, while some films are designed to retain heat in winter. Government and industry modelling has shown that for an average home, solar control window film can result in a 30 per cent drop in air conditioner usage, equating to a 10 to 15 per cent reduction in your home’s annual electrical costs. Creating a consistent and neat external appearance, films allow natural lighting while reducing hot spots and reducing glare, including on television and computer screens. Views are enhanced and the general lighting within the home is softened. Privacy is improved making life more comfortable year round. Window film blocks more than 99 per cent of harmful UV rays, not only saving furnishings and floors from fading, but helping prevent ageing, skin cancer and damage to the eyes, which is important for every member of the family including pets. Window films offer far more value than many

UNCHANGED: Seventy years on Jeep Wrangler still has the looks of the original Jeep.
Rugged Jeep By ERIC BLAIR
ness, not to mention the lack of that diesel fuel smell, will point more people in the direction of petrol than the sales guys anticipate. Safety equipment in Jeep Wrangler include multi-stage driver and front passenger airbags with optional seat-mounted airbags for front seat passengers. Stability control, brake assist, traction control, electronic roll mitigation, tyre pressure monitoring lamp, trailer sway control, hill start assist and brake lock differentials are all standard. The auto also gets hill descent control. Wrangler’s interior is a mix of retro design, in keeping with the Jeep philosophy, and modern technology. We like the driving position and the overall comfort of the front pews. 1054147-JL45-12
DESPITE the rapid growth in the number of 4WD/SUV vehicles on the market there are still only about half a dozen vehicles that are capable of handling serious off-road conditions. And when these conditions become all but impregnable the field narrows even further, arguably down to just the Land Rover Defender and the Jeep Wrangler both rough and rugged vehicles with their own distinct pedigree. Launched in 1987 as the replacement for the long-serving Jeep CJ, Wrangler is the closest direct descendant of the legendary World War II Jeep. Even now, 70 years later, the similarity in appearance between the two vehicles is obvious with its square angular styling, round headlights
and characteristic seven-slot grille. There’s something special about driving a Wrangler. It still has that rugged feel you don’t get in many so-called 4WDs any more. The most recent upgrade to the Jeep Wrangler was the introduction of a new V6 petrol engine. A thoroughly modern design displacing 3.6 litres, this twin-cam unit develops up to 209 kW of power, with 347 Nm to torque. Most to the latter is available at only 1800 revs - giving it diesel-like grunt that’s perfect for off-road driving. The turbo-diesel 2.8-litre fourcylinder engine is still available and Jeep says it’s still likely to make up the bulk of sales of Jeep Wranglers - however, we feel the extra smoothness and responsive-

TINTMASTER is an independent Geelong business that has been providing the best in window tinting from its Gordon Ave premises for more than 25 years. TintMaster’s range of automotive window tinting films is carefully selected from the best manufacturers around the world to offer state-of-the-art solar protection, durability and appearance. Customers gain both lasting quality and value for money from the very best window tinting for cars and homes. But owner Dave Kershaw says it’s not just the film that matters. “With window tinting it’s important not only what the film is but how it’s applied and the care that’s taken in the finishing process.” “It takes a special kind of person to keep up to date with the latest application techniques and to maintain the critical attention to detail necessary to ensure the quality finish of a TintMaster window tint.” The TintMaster team comprises these special people, with more than 60 years of expertise, enthusiasm and craftsmanship. To top it all off, all the work is done in a modern, air-conditioned workshop with the latest technology and equipment. The choice is clear for anyone seeking the most effective way of enhancing the appearance of a vehicle while protecting both driver and passengers. “When you want your car to look great and you want to get the best value for money, come and see us at TintMaster,” says Dave. Anyone who calls TintMaster this week on 5221 8877 and mention this arrticle will receive a $50 discount on the quoted price of the full vehicle tint in the latest Ultra Carbon.

WHETHER it’s for business or pleasure, Truck Car Rentals has transport requirements covered. Truck Car Rentals has an extensive range of vehicles to suit a variety of requirements, owner Graeme says. “Being a small local operation, our prices are more competitive than bigger companies. “Plus, we can offer a high level of customer service because we know the local needs.” Truck Car Rentals recently expanded its fleet to include 46 seater buses, adding to its 12 and 22 seaters. “A lot of schools around Geelong use our services when they need extra buses,” Graeme says. “We have a lot of local clubs and groups hire the smaller buses as well as families for get togethers or outings.” Truck Car Rentals has several enclosed trucks suitable for do-it-yourself removals, requiring only a car licence. Truck Car Rentals has everything up to prime movers and trailers, great for logistics businesses trying to cope with extra demand. A range of light commercials and vans, tray trucks, cars and single-axle trailers for the weekend handyman are also available. “Our rates are lower during the week so that adds flexibility to small businesses vehicle requirements,” Graeme says. “If your vehicle is in for a service or repairs, Truck Car Rentals has the answer. “Whatever your needs, we can assist in finding the right vehicle for the job.” Truck Car Rentals is at 215 Station St, Corio, phone 5275 8288 or visit truckcarrentals.com.au.

IndySport Indy Sport Cats eye chance to enter eight GEELONG Cricket Club took a big leap forward on Saturday when it defeated Essendon by five wickets. Chasing the Bombers total of 224, the Cats struggled early and when Tom Elliott was dismissed without scoring the score was 4/45, a familiar position so far this season. But where previously the Geelong middle order would have faltered, Luke Muller, 46, and Hayden Butterworth, 126, dug deep and combined for a 62-run stand. When Muller was dismissed, Jacob Thorne, 23, stepped in to help out and, along with Butterworth, led the Cats to a much-deserved win. Tomorrow they commence a twoday game against Prahran, with a win to move into the top eight.

In Geelong Cricket Association it’s only round four but, incredibly, the division-one match between Grovedale and Bell Post Hill could see the loser with no hope of playing finals this season. Neither side has a win to its name so far this year, which will be bewildering to Grovedale in particular since it won last season’s premiership. Both sides boast quality players with a good mix of young talent and experience in Alex Cairns, Barry Tsitas, Travis
Faulkhead and Gareth Yelland, who have been among the top players in the league over the past few years. Perhaps it’s time for the younger generation to start carrying some of the load. The side that can get the most out of their lesser players should win this game. Selections: Leopold v NORTH GEELONG, ST JOSEPHS v Highton, GROVEDALE v Bell Post Hill, EAST BELMONT v Lara, GEELONG WEST v Geelong City, Newtown & Chilwell v SOUTH BARWON. Torquay has started the season brightly in division two with a couple of wins to sit second on the ladder. This week the Tigers take on Murgheboluc, which also has two wins to its name, meaning the winner will entrench itself in the top six.
Torquay keeper/batsman Devon Winsall has showed why the Tigers chased him, scoring successive half centuries at the top of the order. Tom Aldridge has led the way with the ball, claiming seven wickets already. Sriram Krishnamurthy has 100 runs already for the Frogs, while veteran Ben Nichols has taken six wickets. Murgheboluc has become one of the better division two sides over the past few years but Torquay is on the rise and looks like winning this one. Other selections: ST ALBAN’S BREAKWATER v St Peter’s, MANIFOLD HEIGHTS v Modewarre, NEWCOMB & DISTRICT v Waurn Ponds, Marshall v THOMSON, GUILD ST MARY’S v Alexander Thomson. In division three Shelford has per-
formed beyond expectations so far to find itself fourth on the table. This week it plays bottom placed North Shore, which, despite dropping back a division, has struggled to make an impact, losing two of its three games outright. For Shelford, Michael and Shane Lymer both have more than 100 runs under their belt, while Daniel Maclean is second on the wickets table with 11. North Shore’s Jarrod Cole has been his side’s best player so far, scoring 85 runs and taking four wickets. It’s hard to see North Shore having enough quality to cause an upset here. Other selections: LETHBRIDGE v Corio, MEREDITH v Little River, TEESDALE v Winchelsea, INVERLEIGH v Bell Park, Bannockburn Bye.
Anglers hit bullseyes aplenty with snapper as target species On the
bite Brian Long
FANTASTIC conditions allowed anglers to catch fish in many locations over the past week. Snapper were the most prime target, with plenty of big fish both caught and lost. Darren Holt fished near Wilson Spit on Saturday for a bag-limit catch of big fish. Another session the following day resulted in a repeat result, although Darren lost two big fish when they became entangled in his stern anchor. Stuart Evans struggled on cup day, hitting the water at daylight only to lose two rippers around daylight when the hooks pulled. He didn’t get another touch for nearly two hours until four rods folded at once, with Darren landing two snapper over 6kg each. Harrison Johns and brother Graham fished the 20m drop off directly out from St Leonards where they had hot session on the snapper. Their best fish was 6.2kg but they caught and released nine, all over 3kg. Stephen Holland made the long journey across to the other side of the bay off Mount Martha where he pulled up in the vicinity of other boats and set his lines. Stephen caught three big fish in less time than it took him to reach the spot from St Leonards . Damian Knowles cast soft plastics along the reefy shoreline between Bird Rock and the quarries where pike were numerous. By day’s end Damian had a nice bag of rock flathead and a snapper over 3.5kg.
SILVER SIDE: Adam Van Der Lugt with a silver trevally caught on a soft plastic lure at Queenscliff. Graham Shorten also nailed plenty of fish on the plastics while fishing the reefs between the quarries and Point Wilson. Pike and flathead were up most of the catch but a huge shoal of salmon also made for an exciting day. Snotty trevalla showed up in the bay, with Nathan Greg catching a dozen on
chicken from his Hobie along the outer wall of Royal Geelong Yacht Club. Trevalla were also caught from Cunningham Pier at first light. Paul Cunningham cast small metal baitfish-profile lures at North Shore rocks to catch six pike around 70cm during the last two hours before dark. Pike were also
spun up from the rocks at Point Lillias and the rock groin near Eastern Beach. Darren Martin fished the inshore grass beds near Hermsley where he had no trouble finding squid on small, dark coloured jigs. Darren said all the best action was in under 3m of water. Nathan Brimley fished the entrance
to Swan Bay, finding plenty of quality salmon. Most were over 1kg and willing to hit a small baitfish-style soft plastic. The same area also produced whiting, squid and a few big flathead, for which this area is renowned. Catching the big flatties requires anchoring up, laying a liberal berley trail and using fish baits suspended under a small float. Surf anglers caught snapper at Black Rock, which can also host the odd big whiting. Salmon appeared to go quiet along the coast, although reasonable numbers of 900g fish were caught on lure at Cinema Point. The near Sheoaks River also produced fish. The Barwon River between Breakwater and Queen’s Park yielded carp on either bread or corn baits. Lismore’s Lake Tooliorook should also start firing as the weather warms, with the redfin biting but set to become more active. Trolling deep-diving minnows and using vibe-style lures work well, while bait anglers need local minnow. Ballarat’s Lake Wendouree continued improving, with both trout and redfin landed on all methods. Troy Wilson has been successful trolling with shallowrunning Rapala lures, taking redfin to 700g and trout over 1kg. Wurdee Buloc Reservoir also improved. Trout have been the main species but redfin have been taken on deeprunning lures such as Daiwa double clutchest. The trevally have also been firing in the Cut at Queenscliff, with anglers working well-presented soft plastics enjoying success. Send reports and photos to info@ raylongtackle.com.au or visit Brian at Ray Long’s Fishing World, 105 Shannon Ave, Manifold Heights.
