Short breaks for tourists but ‘busy’ summer for peninsula’s traders By MICHELLE HERBISON THE region’s visitors are increasingly swapping traditional long summer breaks for multiple short trips, according to Geelong’s tourism authority. Geelong Otway Tourism’s Roger Grant said families were spending more time at restaurants, wineries and organised attractions and less time on casual activities. “People used to come down and virtually live on the coast for three or four weeks but now people stockpile their holidays and go overseas. They have multiple holidays throughout the year of three or four days,” Mr Grant said. Barwon Heads Traders and Tourism Association’s David Littleton said the town was busier than last year. “There are certainly a lot of people around and the town’s absolutely buzzing. Everything’s been perfect really.” Mr Littleton, who operates Seahaven Village accommodation, said Barwon Heads’ accommodation was booked out and forward bookings were “good”. Portarlington Business and Tourism Association president John Rae agreed this year was busier than the last. “We’ve had very strong trading. A couple of traders I’ve spoken to definitely have had improvements on the same time last year.” St Leonards IGA owner Jean Cowley said the new supermarket’s second summer was “fabulous” so far. “We’ve had a wonderful year.”

Jetskis ‘go crazy’ on bay WATER police are cracking down on an increase in speeding jetski drivers on the northern Bellarine Peninsula as the region’s waterways become “more crazy than usual”. Sergeant George Dixon said last weekend was one of the busiest so far, with police issuing many penalty notices to operators of personal watercrafts. “Portarlington and Indented Head had an extraordinary number of complaints in relation to operation of jetskis,” he said. The most common offences were

Peter Stevens Geelong sales manager Craig Wiseman confirmed sales of PWCs had increased 30 per cent in the past two to three years. “A lot of motorbike people are swapping for jetskis. Sports-bike sales have

decreased, so I think people are looking for an alternative way to have a bit of fun,” Mr Wiseman said. He attributed the decrease in motorbike sales to stricter policing of roads. “The Great Ocean Road is not what it used to be. Jetskis are one thing that, as long as you obey the basic laws and principles, you can go flat out all day.” Mr Wiseman said PWCs could travel up to 120km/h.

Portarlington Business Development Association president John Rae said residents had “gratefully received” the presence of water police. “There appears to be a much greater abundance of jetskiiers this year but we’ve noticed the police booking people. I suspect people might be annoyed if the water police weren’t here.” The Independent reported last February that St Leonards Progress Association would lobby State Government to designate separate jetski areas away from swimmers.

WITH a background in guitar and drums, Geelong musician Sarah Armstrong thought she was destined to play in a rock band. Then she met the synthesiser. “I discovered I liked computerised stuff better,” she tells the summer edition of Geelong Coast magazine (GC). Now the woman who performs under the name Von Stache is a rising DJ in the Australian techno music scene. Her credits so far include winning a Triple J remix competition and recording with Sydney DJ The Immigrant But the latest highlight was sharing her excitement with colleagues when her latest single, Soundbox Love, began playing on the radio. “Everyone stopped what they were doing and started dancing,” she says. “It was awesome.” With 92 high-gloss pages of local content, the summer edition of GC is out now at newsagents.

A KEY new business and jobs driver for the region could be top of the agenda at the first meeting of Geelong’s new council this year, according to Mayor Keith Fagg. Cr Fagg, who ran on the Enterprise Geelong plan during his recent election campaign, hoped council would have a model to consider at its January 29 meeting. “There’s been a lot of work going on behind the scenes working out the details and structure of Enterprise Geelong for the past couple of months,” Cr Fagg told the

Independent. “We want to get it right and set it up the right way. I’m hoping it can go to the first council meeting at the end of January but can’t guarantee that.” Cr Fagg said the primary and major focus of Enterprise Geelong would be bringing private enterprise and investment to the municipality. The body was keen “at this stage” to work closely with the high-profile Committee for Geelong lobby group, he said. “We’re not cutting across anything at this stage and not seeking to cut across it but

seeking to benefit Geelong. “Certainly, with a new chief executive at Committee for Geelong I’m looking forward to working with that person and committee.” Cr Fagg said the composition of Enterprise Geelong’s board would be crucial to its success. “I’m looking for commercially-savvy people and the process to find them is part of the structure that will go to council. “There’s nothing about individuals yet but my intention is that the board will be skillsbased.”

Biker busted 101km/h over limit on ‘test ride’ By MICHELLE HERBISON A WINCHELSEA man’s risky testdrive of his newly-repaired motorcycle has proven an “expensive exercise”, according to a Magistrate. Geelong Magistrate’s Court this week heard that police detected Steven Fenske, 36, of Casboults Rd, at a speed of 161km/h in a 60km/h zone. Police prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Kerrie Moroney said Fenske’s reason to police for excess speed was: “I had no idea I was going that fast. I was just going around the block to test the bike”.

Snr Const Moroney said Fenske was speeding along High St, Moolap, between Wattle Park Ave and Moolap Station Rd at 3.50pm on October 4. The area was mostly industrial but a primary school was nearby, she said. Fenske failed to produce a driver’s licence but police later found he held current full motorcycle and motor vehicle licences. His motorcycle was impounded for 30 days. Duncan Ferguson, for Fenske, said his client “got a bit carried away” but was only speeding on that section of

road. “He didn’t realise it was a 60 zone. It’s an industrial area, so he thought it would be 80 or even 100.” Mr Ferguson said Fenske had purchased the 1994 Fireblade CBR 900 about six or seven years ago but it had been off the road the entire time. “He purchased it as damaged and it had just been repaired. On that day he took it to the panel beaters’ on a trailer who gave him plates so he could ride for the first time around the block.” Mr Ferguson submitted that Magistrate Stephen Myall contain Fenske’s

licence suspension to 12 months. “He is in a de facto relationship and they have the care of his partner’s 10-year-old child. His current employment will probably be in jeopardy.” Mr Myall said exceeding a speed limit by more than 45km/h required “some moderation above 12 months”. “Given that it occurred in an industrial area I’m prepared to moderate that.” Mr Myall convicted and fined Fenske $750 and ordered a 14-month licence suspension.

By NOEL MURPHY THE GREAT Aussie staple of fish and chips could be without more protection for sharks, according to research carried out near Queenscliff. Zoologist Bastien Rochowski’s study of sharks off Queenscliff suggested that life without flake and chips could be reality – and soon – without scientists learning more about shark reproduction to safeguard their numbers. “They have a long gestation period, with few pups, and some of them don’t reproduce every year,” Mr Rochowski told the Independent. “They reach maturity at a late age, some species around 20 years, and aren’t able to reproduce until then.”’ Mr Rochowski, a Melbourne University PhD student recently awarded a Victoria Young Scientist Research Prize, studies deep-sea shark species. He said the fact sharks might produce only 10 pups in a lifetime - compared to fish that lay millions of eggs - made difficult their survival, even at the top of the marine food chain. “This is important because those species are the flake that people buy for their fish and chips,” he said. “The key factor to studying them is to work closely with fishermen and learn from each other.” Mr Rochowski warned that an increasing demand for sharks - as food, even liver oil in cosmetics - threatened the sustainability of shark, especially as commercial fishing moved from exhausted shallow water stocks into deep water. “Sharks play the role of a regulator on other species,” he said. “We have seen species expanding dues to shark species depletion. “What do we prefer: having an ocean with plenty of different fish to eat or an ocean full of a few species that are not nice to eat? “To keep the balance in the ocean we have to be careful about the way we fish.”

Health care cuts ‘only option’ By NOEL MURPHY BARWON Health faces a “Mission Impossible” task as it tries to find ways to cut spending following a $4.9 million federal razor attack on its budget, according to Victorian Health Minister David Davis. Canberra has justified population last year but Commonwealth statistics show it grew by 75,000. The hospital appears set to cut about 13 beds, the equivalent of at least half a

ward. The cuts could double waiting time for elective surgery and include job losses. At least 500 people awaiting orthopaedic surgery could see their times pushed from six months out to a year. Barwon Health has presented State Government with options to accommodate the federal cuts but is awaiting approval. Barwon Health chair Dr John

Stekelenberg told staff the proposal included “bed closures, a slowdown of elective surgery and a potential reduction of other services across the organisation, coupled with a likely freeze on recruitment”. He also called on staff to notify managers of any potential savings. A spokesperson said Barwon Health expected a State Government decision on the proposal within a fortnight. Mr Davis this week attacked the Gil-

lard Government for leaving Geelong with service cuts as its only option. “When Canberra announced its funding cuts and its refusal to back down I asked hospital board chairs to work with their CEOs to develop plans to deal with the reduction. I asked them to protect services wherever possible but they’re telling me this is fast becoming Mission Impossible.” Mr Davis said wards and beds were already closing and hospitals were work-

ing on plans to shed staff. Corio Labor MP Richard Marles said the funding cuts were based on Census figures that both levels of government had agreed to use as a reference point. “It’s pretty rich for the State Government to be complaining about health in the context of them having cut hundreds of millions in state funding while at the same time the Federal Government is increasing health funding,” he said.

Sport losing out Incredible feet: Henry, 92, walks around the world By NOEL MURPHY to dance classes By CHERIE DONNELLAN CENSUS data revealing a shift away from traditional sports to dancing among Australian children have been mirrored in Geelong, according to coaches. An Australian Bureau of Statistics study found almost twice as many children aged five to 14 were in after-school dance classes as playing netball. Dance enrolments had risen about 27 per cent since 2003 but the number of children playing netball was down around six per cent. Geelong Academy of Performing Arts’ Michael Ward said the figures were “not surprising”. “Children want something fun that they can do with their friends that they can feel rewarded without needing to compete,” he said. Mr Ward said increasing public acceptance of dancing as an activity for children was also behind the rise, “particularly for boys”. “It (previously) wasn’t as commonly accepted to say you danced. It was like you were Billy Elliot. “Now parents are so supportive for their sons and daughters.” Geelong Netball Association president Lisa Hatton said she had noted a decrease in children playing netball. The association had about 650 juniors in 2009 but only around 500 last year, she said. Ms Hatton blamed part of the fall on a redevelopment of the association’s courts. She hoped parents would encourage children to participate in netball. “Anyone can join a sport like netball without prior learning.”

Make that just what they did, all 40,070 km of stomping, striding, treading and walking – the equivalent of marching all the way around the world. Bell Park’s Henry Cieciura might be 92 years old but he’s just walked the distance of Earth’s circumference, around the equator so to speak, but all here in Geelong. Mr Ciecuira, a Polish immigrant and former Ford worker who came to Geelong in 1949, has been on his world-shattering walk since recovering from heart surgery in 2004. This year he underwent surgery and radiotherapy as well. He’s ecstatic about the achievement but English isn’t his strong point, so daughter Irene Sawkins related his tale to the Independent.

“Dad took up the walk as a challenge. He finished on the last day of 2012 and he’s so excited,” Ms Sawkins said. “He really powered through it toward the end, walking 30km to 35km a day all around Geelong from first thing in the morning until last thing at night. “He was really focussed, maybe even a little obsessed.’’ Ms Sawkins said her father walked the equivalent of Australia’s circumference – 25,700km – a few years ago and just kept going. The “very lean’’ nonagenarian was normally a nondrinker, she said. But he did celebrate, however, with a good bottle of red after finishing his mega-marathon. “He’s keeping it pretty low-key,” Ms Sawkins said, “but it’s absolutely fabulous.”

Brave Lisa’s long walk to beat pain By MICHELLE HERBISON LISA Van’t Hag is getting back to enjoying life after 15 years of “excruciating” back pain. The Geelong woman spent 12 months in rehabilitation following a hip arthroscopy. “I’ve got to retrain my back’s entire muscle group because they’ve been protecting my injured hip for so many years,” she said. Ms Van’t Hag is excited to be training toward next month’s 5km Target Foreshore Fun Run/Walk, supporting Give Where You Live, as part of Geelong Multisport Festival from February 8 to 10. “To me it’s going to be the start of the freedom to be active again as much as I want to be. I want to get as strong as possible to go and enjoy life.” Ms Van’t Hag said she was relieved to have finally found the cause of her chronic pain.

“I’d been to naturopaths, osteopaths, physios ... you name it, I’ve tried them all. One chiropractor actually said ‘I can’t help you’. “I’ve spent many a time crawling around on the floor from back pain and you don’t realise how much you miss out on.” Ms Van’t Hag said she would walk the 5km with a group of work friends. “I got onto it through our social club at work. We’re looking at getting some T-shirts and doing

it as a group. “I’ve always wanted to be able to do something like that but never had, so I’ll cross it off my bucket list.” Ms Van’t Hag said she would “not stop at walking”, citing her fitness goals as “to be able to go for a run” and try boxing training. “I’m sick and tired of saying to my kids ‘Mum can’t do that’. I used to go for a hit of tennis and I’d suffer for a week afterwards.” The multisport festival offers a range of events for all ages and fitness levels, including a Geelong Independent SuperKidz Triathlon. A POSSUM population in Geelong’s Johnstone Park appears to be dwindling amid complaints of a trained hunting dog harassing the legally-protected marsupials. Geelong’s Chris Argent told the Independent she had approached a man hunting possums with his dog twice in recent months. The possums, a regular sight in the park’s grounds, had dropped in numbers from a dozen or more to virtually none, Ms Argent said. She had warned the man the animals were protected but feared that his dog was savaging the animals. Geelong naturalist Trevor Pescott said possums were powerful animals but at risk to larger dogs. “There would be quite a few

I watched him and his mate using the chain to scare possums, to get them down. “Then last Saturday night I found the same guy again with his dog off leash. “I got stuck into him. I told him to take his dog home or I’d tell the police but I couldn’t bluff him this time. “We only saw one possum in the park but you often see 10 of them. The creepy thing was he made the dog stay while he came over to us 100 metres away.” Ms Argent said the dog was “really well-trained”. She was uncertain of its breed but described it as having a “squat body with really pointy upright ears”.

GPS firebug watch By NOEL MURPHY GEELONG firefighters and academics have backed plans for GPS tracking of firebugs as the fire season moves onto high alert. Geelong CFA operations manager Gerry Verdoorn said State Government plans for GPS technology would be welcome if guaranteed to work. Deakin University’s Claudio Bozzi backed the move, saying studies showed it reduced repeat offending but raising privacy concerns for prisoners who might be monitored by GPS. Spring St is looking to track

convicted and suspected arsonists to help reduce the incidence of deliberately-lit fires. An arsonist is suspected to have been behind a 50-hectare grassfire at Little River earlier this week. Emergency services Minister Peter Ryan was reported as saying GPS tracking devices are under consideration for monitoring firebugs. Legislation is reportedly to be drafted early this year. “If it was something that was guaranteed to prevent or reduce the threat of arson, anything we could do would be helpful,’’ Mr Verdoorn told the

By NOEL MURPHY IT’S AN Aussie staple, the old dog’s eye with dead horse. And woe betide the soul who comes between a meat pie lover and their precious pastry. So it comes as no surprise to find Geelong pie aficionados are still championing their old faithful, the Beaumont’s pie, even though its fortunes have somewhat diminished over recent years. History-based Facebook site Geelong has run up a lengthy catalogue of sentimental pie-lovers attesting their addiction to Beaumont pastries. The Beaumont’s operation ceded way to company takeovers – first to Balfours then to Routleys – but the line has not completely vanished. Routley’s, based at North Geelong, still makes a plain beef pie labelled ‘The Beaumont’s Pie’ as a tip to its glory days and loyal fans. With hundreds of likes and comments on the Geelong Facebook site, it’s obvious the humble Beaumont’s holds a special place in Geelong’s pie and pastry pantheon. “Best pies ever,” posted one fan. “My favourite when I was growing up,’’ recalled another. “Drool, used to have one very week!’’ was another comment. Bec Failla attested to an unwavering delight in Beaumont’s pastries. “I got 21 Beaumont pies and 21 Beaumont vanilla slices for my 21st birthday,” she said. “I’d eat one a day, so it was the best present I got. “I started eating them at Roslyn Road Primary School and remember my nanna bought me some the day they closed for the last time. I’ve eaten thousands of pies in my life and nothing compares to them.” Routley’s Abbey Harrington told the Independent a “couple of hundred” Beaumont’s pies were still produced each week. The pies were sold over the counter at North Geelong and also distributed to milk bars and other outlets around the city, she said. “They’re made to the old recipe and it’s called a Routley’s Beaumont’s Pie. People really love them.” And they’re still a bargain, too, at just $4.20 for a slice of heaven. But mouth-watering as they might have been, too much of a good thing can still spell mischief. “We had a pie-eating contest I won by eating seven and a half Beaumont’s pies in two minutes,” Andrew Seater revealed on the Facebook site. “As farfetched as it sounds, I couldn’t even look at a Beaumont’s bag for a few months.”

STATE and local government are divided over the number of bee hives that can be kept on Geelong properties, according to apiarists. Geelong Beekeeping Club’s John Edmonds said a council local law contradicted a state-wide Apiary Code of Practice. “The local law limits the keeping of animals but it includes bees, so theoretically, as I understand it, you can only keep two hives per property in the whole of the Geelong council area, even farms that need bees for pollination. “The code of practice has worked very well and is part of the state planning scheme, so it overrides council local laws but it shows that council officers do not understand the rules. “If you ban beekeeping then it goes underground and the problem is worse for locals because beekeep-

ers cannot collect swarms without council issues.” Council’s website says apiarists can only keep two hives but Department of Sustainability and Environment’s (DSE) website says the code of practice allows from one hive on blocks smaller than 500sqm to an unlimited number on land over two hectares. City of Greater Geelong officer Steve Sodomaco said the code of practice and council’s local law were intended to complement each other. “Council ensures that the Code of Practice is complied with. This is done by cross-referencing between the two governing documents and applying common sense in order to resolve any potential cases of public nuisance.” Mr Sodomaco said Council was seeking legal advice on the issue. A DSE spokesperson said council by-laws regulated hive numbers on properties.

A GEELONG jobs profile will attempt to indentify where the region’s next swag of jobs will come from. Gordon Institute of TAFE research manager Greg Leahy said Geelong Regional Labour Market Profile would identify new job opportunities and the training they required. “The profile is needed so informed decisions can be made about the jobs vision and the education and training needed to deliver it,” Mr Leahy said. Centre for Sustainable Organisations and Work at RMIT University will undertake the study. Mr Leahy said it would provide an important foundation for the regional jobs vision and an action plan being developed through a three-year State Government-funded Skilling the Bay project. The study would draw on 2011

Census data and consultations with a range of organisations and participants including industry associations, employers, employees, unions, training providers and local government representatives, he said. The study team leader, RMIT’s Professor Peter Fairbrother, said Geelong faced new challenges as local industries restructured and the regional economy transformed. “Regional jobs and associated skills in Geelong’s traditional manufacturing-base face dramatic changes,” Prof Fairbrother said. “At the same time, new opportunities are emerging in health and social services, education and retail.” Prof Fairbrother said the study would identify industry skill needs and how workers make decisions about future job and training opportunities. “It will help understand Geelong’s changing labour market and future job opportunities. It will sug-

gest how training providers can best meet the needs of local employers and workers.” Prof Fairbrother said a detailed statistically-based analysis of the region’s labour market confirmed suspected trends such as the decline of jobs in the manufacturing sector and growth of jobs in health care and social assistance. “The question is how can we better understand the current skills and future aspirations of workers and staff in the Geelong area. TALKS are under way to turn North Geelong’s dilapidated power station site into a dry storage for yachts and other marine craft, a councillor has revealed. “We’re certainly talking to an interested party in developing that site,’’ Cr Eddy Kontelj told the Independent. “We’re looking for an appropriate use. Various interests have been shown in that site – one has been the possibility of a dry storage area for marine vessels of one sort or another.’’ Cr Kontelj described the old power station as an “eyesore’’ sitting on a “stagnant site’’. “But there’s huge potential there. It’s right next to Osborne House and if we find something complementary I believe the council would be very supportive.” Nazi slogans, an image of a woman about to have her throat slashed, explicit drawings of sexual organs and other disturbing graffiti have become the site’s hallmarks. Four months after the Independent revealed the shattered old powerhouse was riddled inside and out with broken glass and concrete, sharp twisted metal, needles and pornographic artwork, it remains a public danger apparently ignored by its owner and authorities. Security fencing surrounding the site has been torn down and metal security grids around the concrete structure cut through to allow access to the rubbishstrewn interior with its unguarded shafts and soaring stairs.

THE CLIMPSON clan and hockey are synonymous in Geelong. At one stage 37 members of the family had taken up the sport, ranging from juniors to seniors and veterans. “It just shows there’s a spot for anyone in hockey,” declared Alan, who is also Hockey Geelong’s president. Alan has played the game since he was 19, when he reluctantly taxied his sister to hockey training one evening. “The men’s side was short and the coach convinced me to fill in, so I had a go and ended up enjoying it so much I gave away football.” While Alan is a relaxed, genial bloke, there is no doubt that hockey is his passion. “I took on the presidency because we desperately need a second hockey pitch at Stead Park and I’ve been working hard on that. “It’s been included in the master plan and Hockey Geelong is putting in $250,000 but we need government funding as well because the total cost is $1.8 million. “Once we have a second pitch we can host state championships, juniors and masters tournaments and it will be a boost to the local economy as well. “We’re at capacity now but there are strong opportunities

An Alcoa spokesperson said independent consultants prepared the report in September 2008 at Alcoa’s request. “The assessment is currently being updated using new data from both the power station and the mine and Alcoa has committed to making the final report publicly available when it is complete, estimated to be in April 2013. “Alcoa continually monitors ambient sulphur dioxide levels in Anglesea and the results of this monitoring have been reported publicly for at least 10 years.” The spokesperson said Anglesea residents were safe because excessive sulphur dioxide levels were only likely in unpopulated areas of the town.

GEELONG Mayor Keith Fagg wants to promote shopping local and supporting local jobs (Independent, December 28). What about promoting products totally Australian-designed and made by Geelong workers? It disgusts me that Geelong-based firms have outsourced labour costs overseas yet the quality is unacceptable but the prices of the products are the same as they would be if they were Australian-made. Perhaps shopkeepers and retailers need to advertise the importance of Australian-made because it promotes employment and job creation as well as providing quality products and services and better working conditions for Geelong people. IT WAS great to read that ward councillor Jan Farrell had said Ocean Groveâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Shell Road Reserve would be completed in early February 2013 (Independent, December 28). She also stated that she was looking for funding for a pavilion. Some years ago she and fellow councillors tried to sell Ocean Grove Memorial Reserve, the existing home of the Grubbers football club. Council had even arrived at the stage of subdividing the land into house blocks.

Latest not greatest I READ a story in the December 28 Independent about a nightclub called Basement 159 applying to extend its liquor licence from 3am to 6am so more people could attend. I think that opening until 6am is stupid because Geelong already has way too much violence. If Basement 159 gets a 6am licence strict rules should be applied. Enough security staff should be employed and the venue should stick to the rules of telling drunk people to leave and providing free water. All licenced venues must provide free water, otherwise they break the law. Will the venue provide security to escort the patrons to taxis? There is always fighting in central Geelong on Friday and Saturday nights. Geelong has enough nightclubs open until 7am, so I object to Basement 159 getting longer trading hours. The police have enough problems to deal with in Geelongâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s city centre already. Maybe Mayor Keith Fagg should walk the streets of Geelong at night on a Friday or Saturday to see the violence before any decision is made on the permit. Shaun Richens Newcomb

Heads in fluoride I WRITE in response to a story headlined â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Bitter tears of allergy victimâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; in the August 17 Independent. In 1991 Australian National Health and Medical Research Council stated that it was â&#x20AC;&#x153;desirable to explore in a rigorous fashionâ&#x20AC;? the claimed symptoms of hypersensitivity to fluoride because they were made â&#x20AC;&#x153;with sufficient frequency to justify well-designed studiesâ&#x20AC;?. In 2006 the US National Research Council made a similar call for studies to determine which fluoridation chemicals might cause hypersensitivity in particular individuals. The studies have not been conducted in Australia or other fluoridating nations yet government seems quite happy to proceed with a business-as-usual approach, casually sweeping claims like those in the

misquoting Tim Flannery and claiming that the world is cooling (Letters, December 14). Last year Mr Barronâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s misquoting of Tim Flannery was clearly refuted but instead of backing down he simply repeated it a year later. His claim the world is cooling was deception and also previously refuted in this paper. First, 2010 was the second hottest year on record and 2011 and 2012 were also well-above average 20th Century temperatures. Nine of the 10 warmest years are in the 21st Century, the only exception being 1998. Second, Earthâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s total heat content is growing consistently as we pump more carbon into the atmosphere. We are in a climate emergency and must take immediate. We do not need shallow letters that rely on readersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; ignorance of the scientific evidence behind global warming. This is no time for debating - the science is clear, observational, tested and established. It is time for action. It is fascinating to watch a debate but I call on the Independent to think about the environmental impact of this debate and refrain from printing material that has already been refuted or that obscures the truth. THE MEMBERS of local band Altitude are living proof that raw talent and a passion for music are a winning combination. After just a year playing together, Altitude recently won a national Bedroom Jam earlier this year to earn a spot on the bill at Sydney’s Homebake festival. The quartet’s winning streak also includes battle of the bands victories at Melbourne’s Pushover in March and Queenscliff Music Festival

Bassist Luke Reeves said the next landmark would be releasing a four-track EP. “When it comes out we’re planning to do a lot of Geelong shows and hopefully some Melbourne shows.” Reeves said the band members shared songwriting duties but all wrote “happy and energetic songs”. “Sometimes we write songs about each other without the other immediately knowing,” he laughed. Reeves described the band

members as a “quirky” bunch with varying music tastes. Guitarist Tom Ryan was a “metal head”, while drummer Lachlan Brown was “into jazz and folk”. But the group collectively aspired to the likes of The Vines and Children Collide. Reeves identified lead singer and guitarist Liam Brennan as the “head honcho” of Altitude. “He’s a very expressive songwriter, which is just what we need”. Reeves laughed recalling

how he and Brennan taught Brown to play drums. “He’s never had a real drum lesson. “He only started playing when he joined the band last year because me and Liam taught him.” The band members jokingly inducted Felix Price as their “emergency glockenspiel” player before finding Ryan. “When we were looking for Tom, Felix came up and said ‘I can play the glockenspiel’, which made us laugh. “He’s never done a gig, though – he’s just on-call.”

GEELONG will host its inaugural Great Australian Beer Festival in just three weeks. And locals have a chance to experience the event from the inside - as a volunteer. Billed as Victoria’s biggest beer garden, local brewers together with micro- breweries from round the state will take over Geelong Racecourse from 11am to 7pm on February 2 with over 100 beers and ciders to taste. While the festival will be a celebration of great beer and the craftsmanship, artistry and passion that goes into its creation, live music will also be important in creating the right vibe. 2. Beat butter, hazelnut spread and sugar in a small bowl with electric mixer until combined. Stir in sifted flour with a wooden spoon. 3. Using hands, press dough into pan, smooth surface with a spatula. Bake 25 mins. 4. Remove pan from oven, working quickly, press freckles firmly on to slice in rows 5. Cool slice in pan, cut when cold.

IndySport Indy Sport Cats’ fight for a place in finals THE GEELONG Cricket Club resumes it’s Premier Cricket campaign tomorrow when it travels to the Merv Hughes Oval to play Footscray Edgewater in a one day match. With 14 rounds played, and just five remaining, the Cats sit in 10th place on the ladder. A win here would see them right in contention for this seasons finals. But with Footscray Edgewater sitting just behind them, this game will be hard fought. Hayden Butterworth was easily the Cats best batsman prior to the break, while Marc Carson is still the key to the bowling line up. If a few others can find the same sort of form, there’s no reason this young side can’t be finals bound. The Geelong Cricket Association also resumes after the Christmas break, and in division one, this season is shaping as one of the tightest in years. With just four rounds remaining,

there is probably eight teams that have a realistic chance of being among the six that will contest the finals. Leopold sit in seventh spot, and may yet rue snatching defeat from the jaws of victory against East Belmont in round seven, as they have a tough run home. And last seasons premier Grovedale are just hanging in there, sitting in eighth place, and although they will fancy themselves to win in all their remaining games, one slip up could cost them dearly.

After many of the important games this round have been played, the future will either be easier to predict, or more likely, as clear as mud. SOUTH BARWON v Bell Post Hill, Geelong City v LARA, GROVEDALE v Highton, EAST BELMONT v St Josephs, GEELONG WEST v North Geelong, NEWTOWN & CHILWELL v Leopold. Division two is also looking like being a cliffhanger, with just one win separating fourth placed Marshall and ninth placed Modewarre, with all teams in between fighting to stay on the positive side of the ledger. Early season fancy Newcomb & District are sitting outside the six, but their form of late has been decent, and with two winnable games coming up, they will be keen to get some points in the bank before their tough finish to the season. St Peters also have a lot to play for. The Saints were poised nicely after wi-

ining three of their first four games. But three consecutive losses since then has proven how quickly teams can slide. Those losses look like coming back to haunt them as they have a tough run home, and will struggle to play finals. Modewarre is the other team who could figure in March, and although they have acquitted themselves well after being promoted for this season, it’s hard to see them having enough depth to win enough games to make it. MARSHALL v St Peters, WAURN PONDS v Modewarre, Torquay v THOMSON, NEWCOMB & DISTRICT v Alexander Thomson, MURGHEBOLUC v Guild St Marys, Manifold Heights v ST ALBANS BREAKWATER Meredith is the runaway leader in division three, with Shelford and Bell Park nipping at their heels. But from there, the race is wide open with eighth placed Little River just one game behind fourth placed Lethbridge.

The Redbacks may struggle to make it with their lack of depth, but they have given themselves a chance at least. Also sitting outside the top six is perrenial finalist Teesdale, and if they lose to Meredith this round, they could be in big trouble. With a bye to follow, it’s now or never for them. As always in the bottom division, outright results can play a big part. Amazingly so far this season, it’s not just the cellar dwellers that have given up maximum points, but both the second and third placed teams have lost this way. Because of this, it will be a long time before this years finalist can be accurately predicted. also reporting snapper and gummy shark captures. Squid were found in a number of locations but the time seemed more important. All inshore grass beds were holding squid but successful anglers had to be on the water at first light to enjoy plenty of action, with captures generally dropping as the sun rose. Soft plastics enthusiast Cameron Gardiner drifted the shallow grass beds off Hermsley for some mixed bag of fish. He caught flathead to 65cm along with pike almost 1m long but the number of squid he attracted was particularly exciting. Paul Martin fished the edge of the channel near Wilson Spit to land his fair share of gummy shark. Most were small and returned but Paul also boated fish of just over 1m. Whiting started to show in numbers in close to

Point Lillias. Many were around 33cm but bag-limit captures were common on pippie or mussel baits. Keith and Janette Loader took granddaughter Mia out in the boat for the first time. Fishing near Alcoa, Mia certainly held her own on a huge bluethroat wrasse, with whiting also part of the day’s catch. Cunningham Pier began producing trevalla along with some big squid taken. Successful anglers reported that early morning was the best time to fish the pier. Leigh Westerland fished from his kayak near Rippleside, catching pike and flathead on hard-bodied and soft-plastic lures. Plenty of pike were still available from the innerharbour, with North Shore rocks a prime location on the evening low tides. Many local anglers returned from the Murray

A week earlier, seven-year-old Koby Van Lieshout was fortunate enough to be taken to the Queenscliff pier by his dad Mark on Christmas day The boys spent three fantastic hours angling before returning home for lunch with a nice flathead and squid. This weekend’s afternoon rising tides should be ideal for targeting Swan Bay’s big flathead.

WITH summer in full swing, the fishing was as hot as the weather itself over the past week in both fresh and saltwater. Stuart Page fished the upper reaches of the Barwon River where he had no trouble landing 30 redfin on a variety of diving-pattern lures. Noel Shorten also fished the Barwon, catching redfin close to 1kg with Atomic deep-diving shad lures in the red colour. Noel fished near Landy Field where late in the evening was best, especially when the sun had disappeared off the water. Giles Kawitzki caught quality carp from the river, including a beauty of 8.9kg. Dan Stevens also landed two near Fyan’s Park on Monday evening, both of which he estimated at better than 6kg. Daniel Faith fished the Moorabool River at Morrisons for trout. Big fish were scarce but the fact he caught at least three fish on each outing demonstrated how good the Moorabool is with a more-consistent water flow from Bungal Dam. Lake Purrumbete produced some of the best trout fishing, with mudeye fished under a bubble float the favoured method. Warm conditions early morning and late evening produced the best action. Wurdee Boluc Reservoir started to produce rainbow trout averaging 1kg and redfin in various sizes from plain tiny to Craig Coyte’s 2.2kg whopper. Craig caught his fish on a Daiwa Double Clutch deep-diving lure. The most consistent saltwater captures were reported from Swan Bay. Anglers using berley attracted some of the best-quality flathead I have seen in a long time, with many close to 2kg and the bigger fish nudging 4kg. The same area also produced garfish, leatherjacket and whiting, with anglers fishing after dark
