GFC ‘clean’, says Costa By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN GEELONG Football Club has nothing to fear from a drug investigation engulfing Essendon, according to former Cats president Frank Costa. Mr Costa, who was president when the Cats employed a fitness trainer now embroiled in the investigation, declared Geelong “squeaky clean”. The former Cats trainer, Dean Robinson, is one of two Essendon fitness and conditioning staff at the centre of the AFL and Australian Sports Anti-

Doping Authority investigation into the Bombers. Essendon suspended Robinson after the scandal broke on Wednesday. He was employed at Geelong as strength and rehabilitation manager when Mark Thompson was senior coach, including during the Cats’ breakthrough premiership year of 2007. Thompson left Geelong to work at Essendon in controversial circumstances and brought Robinson to the Bombers. Mr Costa said the Cats’ leadership would have prevented any issues with

performance-enhancing drugs. “I’m not concerned at all,” he said. “The club was strongly run with leaders like Brian Cook and Neil Balme who had a handle on absolutely everything. “The place is squeaky clean and that’s the value of the strength of the leadership provided by Brian and Neil.” Essendon this week said its players unknowingly took substances that could be illegal. The investigation into the use of possibly illegal performance-enhancing

drugs could also spread to Gold Coast, where Robinson and former assistant Steve Dank worked briefly. Rugby league club Manly could also be implicated because Dank worked for the Sydney club for at least two seasons. Players face potential bans of more than two years if found guilty of using performance-enhancing drugs. The investigation revolves around the use of supplements called peptides, some of which are legal and act similarly to human growth hormone, used by disgraced cyclist Lance Armstrong.

Geelong released a statement this week pledging to work with the investigation if necessary. “Geelong Football Club can confirm that an individual involved with Essendon Football Club fitness program during the period currently under investigation was also previously employed by Geelong Football Club. “Whilst we have no evidence or information that this individual acted in an improper manner during his employment at the Geelong Football Club, we are ready to cooperate fully with the investigation.”

GEELONG’S council has been warned to exercise caution over a planned strategic alliance with Places Victoria because the statutory authority is in “crisis”. Council decided last week to form the alliance to promote urban renewal in central Geelong after a Places Victoria office opened in the city last year. But Places Victoria faces an $18 million deficit after its first year of operation, according to state opposition planning spokesman Brian Tee. The organisation’s chairman, deputy chair and chief executive had resigned, while almost a third of staff had been sacked, he said. State Government created Places Victoria in 2011 to facilitate urban renewal around

Victoria for residential and mixed-use purposes. Mr Tee said Places Victoria was in financial crisis. “Places Victoria is trying to balance the books and flogging off everything they’ve got. “I hope council has done its due diligence and urge it to be careful before putting ratepayer funds in the hands of Places Victoria because of the uncertainty surrounding it.” Mr Tee said Places Victoria had “walked away from Dandenong and now it’s getting excited about Geelong” while facing the same issues. Council’s planning portfolio holder, Rod Macdonald, said council had taken Places Victoria at face value. “There could be things that have happened that we don’t

know about. It’s a government instrumentality and a statutory authority, so it needs to be managed by State Government. It’s not something we can control.” Cr Macdonald said the alliance aimed to kick-start shop-top developments in central Geelong. “Places Victoria has access to capital and can take equity positions in developments. “Getting a shop-top demonstration project started would be ideal but the relationship at this stage is purely advisory.” Planning Minister Matthew Guy blamed the previous Labor government’s “lack of oversight” for Places Victoria’s “massive financial challenges”. “It is astounding Brian Tee would criticise an alliance that will provide an opportunity for job growth in Geelong.”

Cats catching ‘AIDS’ as ferals go on the attack LOCK up your cats or they could face a feline AIDS epidemic, Geelong vets and pet shelters warn. A large feral cat population, kittens bought un-desexed from pet shops or online and thousands of strays across the region are behind the problem, with owners urged to keep their cats indoors. Feline immunodeficiency virus, or FIV, is contracted through cats fighting and biting. Cats that have not been desexed and which are allowed to roam day or night are chief offenders.

The incurable virus can be carried for many years before its deadly symptoms strike. These include weight loss, anorexia, mouth and gum disease, diarrhoea, skin infections, dermatitis, respiratory infections and depression. Geelong Animal Welfare Society (GAWS) boss Belinda Russo said FIV “could be epidemic in a way, with the number of feral cats”. “Last year 2500 cats came into the shelter and 45 per cent of them were feral,” she said. “We do have a really big problem compared to other demographics.”

Ms Russo said an extended kitten season appeared to be boosting cat numbers. Cats’ eight-week gestation period allowed them to produce two to three litters between spring and autumn, she warned. FIV can be vaccinated against but requires annual boosters. Infected cats should be kept indoors to prevent the disease spreading. Veterinarians told the Independent testing suggested FIV could be increasing across Geelong. They cautioned pet owners against letting cats roam if not vaccinated.

“The vaccine requires three shots two to four weeks apart plus annual boosters,” said a vet, who wanted to remain anonymous. “We’re finding only a percentage of owners will follow through with the boosters.’’ GAWS did not vaccinate outgoing cats against FIV but tested them for symptoms and notified owners, Ms Russo said. “The trick is if they’ve already been vaccinated it will show as positive … and the FIV vaccine doesn’t 100 per cent cover it, it’s not bulletproof. The preventative for all cat owners is to keep them in an enclosure or inside.”

By MICHELLE HERBISON A CORAL reef made from crochet, knit and felt is the culmination of a community of crafters’ vision to protect local marine life, according to organisers. Sue Jenkins said a Geelong Community Reef exhibition opening this week would showcase the coral and marine life of Port Phillip Bay through art and craft. About 175 people contributed to the exhibition, including participants in aged care facilities, schools and local craft groups. The Geelong project was part of a worldwide movement started by American mathematicians who discovered crochet was the perfect way to demonstrate hyperbolic planes. “Hyperbolic crochet enabled them to mimic tightly bunched brain coral, spires of pillar coral and forests of kelp,” Ms Jenkins said. The group took its inspiration from a book of photographs that showed the “impressive colours” in the Geelong region’s bays. “We want people to be surprised there are red sea corals, bright yellows and royal blues,” Ms Jenkins said. The project included the Geelong Community Reef group teaching crochet skills to aged care residents, school students and other groups. “It’s really blown out of all expectations. People who were struggling with arthritis or could hardly crochet or knit or anything have really come along with their skills,” Ms Jenkins said. Geelong Community Reef is at Shearers Arms Visual Art Centre, 202 Aberdeen St, Geelong West, from Wednesday 13 to 16 March.

SeekingArrangement.com listed more than 100 Deakin “sugar babies’’ as keen to pair up with wealthy backers in return for payments to cover education and living expenses. The website suggested the students could receive around $3000 a month under their “mutually beneficial relationships and mutually beneficial arrangements’’. The dating site named University of Sydney its top Aussie “sugar baby college’’ with 137 signatories. University of Newcastle was second with 114. The site also wrongly claimed that women in Geelong outnumbered men five

to one, greatly increasing the odds of “sugar daddies’’ meeting a “sugar baby’’. The average “sugar baby’’ was a beautiful, ambitious college student, aspiring actress or model or single mum, the site said. “She works hard to get where she wants to be in life but doesn’t have a lot of extra spending money.” The site has rejected accusations that sugar daddy arrangements amount to prostitution, arguing sex is never required although it might be sought. Deakin declined to comment on the website but encouraged students struggling financially to contact the university’s student financial assistance office. “The university provides a wide range of advice and information to help our students deal with financial pressures they might be facing, from advice on budgeting

to direct financial assistance, such as scholarships, student loans, rental assistance grants and food vouchers,’’ Deakin Student Life executive director John Devereaux said. “Any student who finds themselves in a difficult personal situation may also benefit from the university’s free legal advisory service and the free and confidential personal counselling service.” Deakin Union of Students Association president David Joyce said he was unaware of any “sugar daddy’’ relationships involving the university. Arrow might have given even Australia’s forthcoming Joint Strike Fighter a run for its money. But controversy marked the sleek, white interceptor from the start. Russia’s launch of Sputnik 1 eclipsed the Arrow’s debut the same day before it was scrapped two years later amid spiralling costs and a belief manned aircraft were becoming obsolete. Mr Sinnbeck said more than 30 technical aspects of the Arrow were incorporated into latter-day aircraft. “And it’s a beautiful looking thing up there in the sky – it looks and even sounds just like a jet,” he said of his lithium battery-powered model.

Pro boats ‘loaned’ for plunder of fish FISHERMEN are borrowing commercial boats from licensed operators to plunder Corio Bay’s fish stocks, according to a new lobby group. Friends of Corio Bay Action Group spokesperson Ivan Bereza said Department of Primary Industry (DPI) budget cuts were preventing proper regulation of fishing activity in the region. “They borrow boats from people who own the commercial licences and I’m not convinced a lot of the fish they catch in Corio Bay are actually declared. DPI in Queenscliff has gone from 46 employees to 16, so who’s checking on these professional fishermen? “They can do what they want.” Mr Bereza’s comments follow a push by Geelong’s recreational fishermen to ban commercial netting in Corio Bay. Organisers expected up to 1500 people

at a second meeting on the issue next week, he said. Geelong fishing author Geoff Wilson said he was “frustrated” with Fisheries Victoria for failing to manage Corio Bay “properly”. “The people who hold the licences have been allowing other people to use their equipment and their boats. These are the waters the Geelong people use,” Mr Wilson said. “We have people coming from everywhere and taking fish from Corio Bay using methods that are ecologically inappropriate.” Mr Wilson said commercial netting disrupted fish populations and marine vegetation, “dragging a scraper over hundreds of metres of ground night after night”. DPI fisheries management and science director Travis Dowling said the department’s overt and covert inspections found

“no information” on illegal fishing in Corio Bay. “We’re aware there’s a lot of commercial fishing going on but that’s licensed,” he said. Mr Dowling said 13 of 238 public calls to DPI’s 13FISH reporting number between July 1 and September 30 related to commercial fishing but many were from people who failed to realise it was legal. Fisheries officers conducted 46 inspections in Port Phillip Bay last financial year and 25 so far this year. Inspectors this year found six offenders and issued two verbal warnings, two official warnings and two infringement notices, Mr Dowling said. “We’ll continue to monitor and inspect commercial fisheries and ensure they’re being conducted lawfully. Inspections to date show a high level of compliance with the rules and regulations.”

Feedback adds cafe to $45m library project PUBLIC feedback has prompted Geelong’s council to add a cafe to its “striking” $45 million plan for the city’s library and heritage centre, according to Mayor Keith Fagg. He said support for the project to include a cafe emerged as “one of the strong themes” during public consultations on the centre redevelopment. “People said it was important to have a striking contemporary design that would attract national and international interest,” Cr Fagg said.

Council expects to complete the project in late 2015. Geelong Regional Library Corporation chair Cr Andy Richards called the redevelopment a “landmark project” for the city. “We are building something that will take Geelong forward into the next 50 years of its history while conserving our heritage,” Cr Fagg said. Bancoora fired up for big 50th IT’S UNIQUE among the region’s well-known surf life saving clubs, tucked away in apparent obscurity yet eliciting passionate dedication among members. Bancoora Surf Life Saving Club is the only club unassociated with a major coastal town, surviving in relative isolation through a disastrous clubhouse fire in 1987 to boast more than 450 members and modern facilities. Preparations for 50th anniversary celebrations are under way. The last remaining club founder, Ken Galloway, admits he never thought it would eventuate. “No one knew of us at first and it took three or four years before people came down regularly. It was only when we started to compete at surf lifesaving carnivals that we started to become known.

“We only had 30 or 40 members in the first few years, no clubhouse. “We’d load up a Holden station wagon in Geelong, drive down, unload it all and carry the gear to the beach, patrol all day and then pack up, load it back into the wagon and drive back. “Probably because of that it was a close-knit group. We had no idea it would last, didn’t even think about it. “If you’d told us then the club would one day turn 50

That’s old!’.” Ken said the club had its ups and downs “as all organisations do” but survived in typical laidback Aussie style. “The beach is a good leveller,

whether you’re the Prime Minister or a street sweeper. Everyone just pitches in and gets involved.” With a background in museum work and understanding the importance of the public record, Ken kept a journal and many items

from the early history of the club. That came in handy after the fire destroyed most of the clubs records, leaving many former members previously associated with the club now unknown. President Nathan Morton said the club was keen to get in touch with them about the anniversary celebrations. “We’ve had an increase in membership of around 50 per cent in each of the last three years as more people discover Bancoora,” he said. “Suburbia is getting closer and people like the club because it’s less competitive, more relaxed and family-oriented.” The family friendly aspect was demonstrated when the club won a recent community award for its youth mentoring program.

“We devised a program for young members who finished the junior Nippers program but were not quite adult members. It’s kept the kids as members and made a huge difference,” Nathan said. Nathan estimated that about 5500 members had graced the club during its 50 years. “We’re collating as much of our history as we can find and presenting it all in one night. We’re inviting all members past and present to take part in the celebration.” The anniversary celebration will be in Simonds Stadium’s Fred Flanagan Room on April 13. Our storages 83% after dry month Buckets&Bouquets JANUARY was dry in the Geelong region, with just 4.2mm of rain recorded over two days. The rain capped a 38-day dry period in the region, stretching from December 21 to January 26. However, January is often dry around Geelong. No rain fell in January 1878, with tiny totals from 1mm to 4mm peppering the historical records ever since. The rainless record is still 60 days, from January 28, 1891, to March 28, 1891. Our recently completed January also had no stormy or thundery days. Our main Otways water catchment was extremely dry. Beech Forest recorded only 22mm,

compared to its January average of 76mm, while West Barwon Reservoir had only 3mm and Mt Sabine just 11mm. Fortunately, the catchments finished the month still in very good shape at 83 per cent of capacity. Warmer-than-average temperatures were also experienced across the region for the month. Maximums averaged 26C and minimums 13.6C. The hottest day

was January 4, with a maximum 42.2C. The lowest overnight minimum was 9.6C on January 30 and lowest maximum was 20.1C on the 13th. The warmest overnight minimum was 19.5C on January 18. January recorded five days over 30C, which was a little below normal for January. No very windy days with gusts over 60km/h were recorded but at least two days, January 21 and 24, featured a smelly, smoky haze from the Gippsland fires that reached Geelong. A grassfire at Mt Duneed and a suspicious outbreak near the Barwon River at Belmont were the only fire threats in the district.

Pacific solutions I’D LIKE to thank Richard Worland for his letter in last week’s Independent and his interest in the Pacific. The Australian Government is committed to supporting Papua New Guinea and Pacific island countries build capacity and economic resilience. Around 25 per cent of our total overseas development assistance funds programs in this region. Through the work of our aid agency, AusAID, we are helping more mothers deliver their babies safely, ensuring more children attend school, giving more people access to safe water, better constructed roads and well-trained law enforcement officers and we are committed to improving safety and economic security for women in the Pacific. We provided immediate emergency assistance to the people of Fiji and Samoa in the wake of Cyclone Evan and stand ready to provide further assistance as needs arise. Closer to home, it is my great privilege as Member of Corio to see the progress being made in Geelong’s northern suburbs. The Federal Government has provided $16 million to build more than 70 homes in Norlane alone. We have funded improvements to GP services, public open spaces and community facilities. The Household Assistance package is helping families absorb increases in energy bills due to the carbon price and, to further help balance budgets, the Schoolkids Bonus is providing nearly 13,000 families in Geelong with cash assistance to help cover the costs of sending their children to school. MP’s ‘bollocks’ beyond doubt THE Independent last week reported Labor Member for Corangamite Darren Cheeseman saying: “I think people like the fact I’ve got a lot of bollocks”. Thinking my concept of the general usage of the word must have been wrong, I Googled it. The result said bollocks was a word of Anglo-Saxon origin, meaning testicles.

The word is often used figuratively as a noun to mean nonsense, as an expletive or as an adjective to mean poor quality or useless. This was the word Mr Cheeseman used to describe himself. If he believes it about himself, why should we doubt him. Elizabeth Appleby Portarlington

Apology demanded I WAS shocked and appalled to discover that Michael Spencer compared my writing to the Nazis (Letters, January 18). As a human, I am offended that I could be compared to such a sinister group of people. As a Jew, whose grandfather fled from the Nazis in the 1930s and who has faced my own share of anti-Semitism in my time, I was deeply hurt. I expect an unreserved apology from Mr Spencer. The offending letter was partially a response to my request that the Independent desist from printing letters from climate change sceptics. This might seem like censorship but it is not. The vast majority of scientists and the public accept the reality of climate change. My simple point was that printing so many letters from sceptics

creates a false impression that there is an evenly balanced debate. The sceptics can have their say but their representation in the Independent is way out of proportion to their size. My second point is that this is a very serious issue, not a trivial, entertaining debate. Therefore, presenting a false sense of balance can only harm the effort of governments and scientists to encourage the public to respond to the difficult challenge of climate change. Efforts up in smoke SEEING the horrific footage of recent bushfires and the damage they wrought on the nightly news was heartbreaking. I couldn’t help but notice the copious amount of smoke and carbon dioxide (CO2) being pumped into the atmosphere and wondered how this compared with the reduction targets set for human CO2 output. I also wondered that, given there are 20 active volcanoes constantly going off, just how effective really were targets set for carbon emission reductions. I suspect that, in the overall scheme of things, the puny efforts made by humanity would be offset to a large degree by natural events such as bushfires and volcanic eruptions. So why are we kidding ourselves that a carbon tax is going to help the climate one iota? It seems a grandiose exercise in futility. Alan Barron Grovedale

PETER Van Elden (Letters, January 18) wrote that he looked forward to the next anti-fluoridation “missile.” Actually, I would like to launch one for him. I challenge Mr Van Elden to read The Case Against Fluoride, by Dr Paul Connett, Dr James Beck and Dr Spedding Micklem. This book has been favourably reviewed by: Dr Arvid Carlsson, a Nobel Laurette in medicine; Dr Hardy Limeback, a former head of preventative dentistry at University of Toronto; and Dr Vyvyan Howard, Professor of Bioimaging and a medicallyqualified toxico-pathologist ate University of Ulster’s School of Biomedical Sciences. According to Prof Howard, the authors “have produced a well-researched, cogently argued and very readable text that summarises historical, political, ethical, toxicological and epidemiological scientific data behind drinking water fluoridation. The text is approachable by non-scientists and specialists, although an extensive technical bibliography is provided for those who wish to delve deeper”. Please, Mr Van Elden, get back to us with your own expert review of this text. Perhaps you would also care to explain to the people of Geelong why every argument presented in this book can be dismissed as baseless anti-fluoridation “ranting” and why Drs Carlsson, Limeback and Howard are “misinformed.” Please include your scientific qualifications alongside your expert analysis. “COOL, warm and surfie” is how Australian acoustic rocker Pete Murray describes his re-recorded Blue Sky Blue album, The Byron Sessions. “By surfie, I mean it sounds better if you play it near the beach,” Murray explained. Toying with the idea of doing his first “real” solo Australian tour, Murray sent an acoustic demo of his fourth album title track Blue Sky Blue to Blue King Brown singer Natalie Pa’apa’a. Her rap, which Murray thought “sounded great”, sparked the idea to remake his Blue album using acoustic beats and a line-up of industry friends. “I didn’t want to release an album and have it be like the greatest hits because I wasn’t ready for that,” Murray confessed. “I thought doing the acoustic version of my last album and having friends involved would give it a clean, fresh vibe.” Murray admitted he preferred the re-released album over his electric guitar original. “Maybe the songs didn’t reach their potential on the last album but I always believed in the songs.” Murray believed that fans were also more receptive to his traditional acoustic sound. “It was my decision to do an electric album rather than what I was known for – which is acoustic – because I wanted to do something different.” But Murray said the opportu-

“My fans have always been so important to me and there are so many fans in these towns who’ve always supported me.” Murray promised he would get “up close and personal” with fans at The Wool Exchange on 16 February. “I want everyone to have a really good time and feel like they’re part of the show.”

Giants ‘to go Wilde’ at Carlton LEGENDARY Australian blues rock band The Giants will play Geelong’s Carlton Hotel on Sunday afternoon. Special guest Wilbur Wilde will join the band for the gig, beginning about 2pm. Formed in 1981, The Giants have released 14 albums and two DVDs to build on reputation as one of Australia’s greatest blues rock bands. The last album, released in December, 2009, was nominated for a quartet of Australian Blues Music Awards. The Giants have toured regularly in Europe, US and New Zealand as well as Australia on the back of a reputation

Lee will sing his number-one hits along with crossover country classics in his rockabilly style, with the shows featuring more than 50 songs. Elvis the Hillbilly Cat show will feature many of The King’s early Sun Studio tracks as Lonnie would have recorded them. The laidback, cool presentation with backing band The Leemen will tell the story of the songwriters and music behind the young Elvis. Lee won an Australian Elvis Presley impersonation competition as a 16-year-old, so he knows how to present The King’s music. BELLARINE Rail Trail will host an annual day of Rotary family fun runs on March 3. Now in its fifth year, the increasingly popular event incorporates a kids’ fun run against the railway’s steam engine and a new adults’ event, Steamin’ Ahead. The adults will attempt to beat a steam train full of passengers from Queenscliff to Drysdale. The kids’ event will be at Drysdale, with the children running against a character steam engine. Commencing 8am at Queenscliff, the Steamin’ Ahead Fun Run can be run individually or in a relay team of three. The first of the eight children’s agedbased runs begins 9.45am, with the final starting 1.30pm at Drysdale Railway Station. Families can also enjoy delicious food, train truck rides, face-painting, crazy hair, an animal farm, rides and entertainment including The Mik Maks and Dazzling Dan live on centre stage. Soak up sun in right dose A LITTLE bit of sun can do everyone’s health the world of good. That’s the message from Australian Skin Face Body’s Dr Ian Holten, who says Victorians are overdosing on the “Slip, Slop, Slap” message to the detriment of their vitamin D levels. “It’s a tricky balance. A recent study linked vitamin D deficiency with higher rates of breast cancer in southern Australia, so we’re realising now you need to get a little bit of sun,” Dr Holten says. “We know that vitamin D is essential for fighting everyday coughs and colds right through to preventing cancer, MS and heart disease.” Alarmingly, research out of Sydney has shown that vitamin D actually helps prevent skin cancer. Dr Holten warns that anyone who sun-baked as a child have potential for skin cancer but avoiding the sun in later life may actually do more harm than good. Harmful UVA rays are well-known to cause sun damage but UVB rays promote vitamin D production in the body, he explains. “If you stay out of the sun you reduce your immunity, so you’re not going to stop the skin cancers – you’re going to make them worse,” he says. Dr Holten recommends a visit to a GP to determine each individual’s appropriate dosage but about 2000 international units (IU) is average. A rough formula is to go out in the sunshine for about half the amount of time it would take an individual to burn, he says. RANGE Rover Evoque breaks new ground for the British marque that pioneered the concept of a 4WD that can be both competent and comfortable. Prior to the introduction in 1970 of a vehicle simply called ‘Range Rover’ it was considered normal for working vehicles to be just that, trucks with a crude 4WD system to give them traction in harsh off-road areas. Land Rover was very much part of that scene until it came up with the idea of adding another model to its lineup, one that could be used as both a family station wagon and a working 4WD. The rest of the world’s auto makers eventually cottoned onto the idea, coming up with similar vehicles, many of which became nothing more than family station wagons that never travelled off sealed surfaces. For years, Range Rover resisted this so-called soft-roader trend, but has now produced a vehicle called Evoque. A stylish wagon that - horror of horrors in the minds of the purists - can even be bought with only 2WD. The good news is that the 2WD Evoque can be bought for just under $50,000 in its most basic variant though it’s not hard to play the options game and add something like 50 per cent to the price. The best news of all was that the apparently unworkable shape of the original concept - called a Land Rover at the time - has been translated into reality. What looks like a very low roof is actually a clever illusion. Though the Evoque’s roof slopes sleekly down at the rear, the angle is not as steep as it seems, as the rising belt line is a major player in the apparently low appearance. Our test vehicle for the last week has been a four-door Evoque with a

turbo-diesel engine and 4WD; the low-cost 2WD won’t be on the market till mid 2012. We found the front area of the little Range Rover comfortable and pretty spacious for a vehicle of this size. The upmarket design and quality of materials is impressive and we can see wealthy owners of Autobiography Rangies buying a couple of Evoques for their kids based on its interior styling alone. Range Rover Evoque has sufficient headroom for a six-footer in the back seats, though that’s probably about the limit, so check for yourself if you’re likely to have tall travellers back there. On sealed surfaces the Range Rover Evoque handles almost as well as a good hatchback. You wouldn’t exactly describe it as being sporty, but it comes closer than you might expect. Boot space is good and we had no trouble fitting in a couple of fair-sized suitcases without the need to fold down the rear seatbacks. As well as the good suspension setup the Evoque uses many of the electronic traction aids from the fullsize Range Rover and the Land Rover Discovery. During the media launch of Evoque a couple of months back we did some moderately harsh bush running, including wading it down a river and climbing and descending hills made damp by recent rain. Cleverly, the designers have given the 2WD Evoque the same ground clearance as the 4WD, which means it can tackle dirt tracks and the like. It also maintains the macho look desired by SUV buyers. Range Rover has produced a stylish, competent vehicle in its new Evoque and we aren’t in the least bit surprised to find its already performing well in the Australian sales race.

FLATHEAD action continued over the past week in both Corio and Port Phillip Bays. George Sutton found the action fast and furious on the run up to high tide in the mouth of Swan Bay, landing nine flathead to 3.2kg. Chris Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Shea also fished the Swan Bay area, taking reasonable numbers of quality flathead on Berkley Gulp soft plastics. Neil Ricketts drifted the edge of Coles Channel for a healthy catch of fish around 40cm and three over 55cm on blue bait and squid. Noel West casting soft plastics from the shore between Clifton Springs and Hermsley, catching four flatties over 1kg each. Lure enthusiast Garry Knott reported a similar result from the shore but closer to Alcoa, with his best a 64cm rock flathead. Tye Matthews targeted snapper at Wilson Spit but instead caught a 9.6kg gummy shark. Many anglers boated gummies but most were small. Patience was rewarded with better fish, especially at Wilson Spit and the 20m drop off out from St Leonards after dark. Justin Savage fished off Mt Eliza, a renowned gummy area, where he caught a 1.7m fish. The same area also produced a 1.4m gummy for Ben Shorten. Squid were taken on the shallow grass beds off Hermsley, with bag-limit captures were common for anglers using small darkcoloured jigs.

Silver trevally over 1.5kg were taken at Queenscliffâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s cut on soft plastics such as Atomic grubs in the Motor Oil colour or on Gulp turtleback worms. Queenscliffâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s salmon action improved close to The Rip where fish to almost 3kg were taken by a variety of methods. Trolling worked but casting to the fish was better. Kingfish captures continued to be limited, although Stan Porter caught two of 6.6kg and 6.1kg while casting small lures into a surface bust up in 12m off Portsea. Surf anglers caught quality salmon on lure from the rock platforms either side of Lorne, with the best results on the high tides. Bait anglers in the same area landed some nice snapper and whiting in the evenings.

In freshwater, Lake Tooliorook again produced rainbow and brown trout. Trolling Tassie Devils was best when performed close to shore. Lake Purrumbete again produced some of the best trout fishing, with successful anglers either trolling or fishing mudeye under bubble floats in close to Shag Rock. Fish over 3kg were among the captures. Paul Stevenson fished close to Queenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Park Bridge where he found that the carp were fussy, taking only unweighted baits of bread. Final hope on the line GEELONG Cricket Club kept its slim finals hopes alive with a sterling performance against Camberwell last Saturday. The Magpies batted first, reaching 45 without loss before Jake Reed and Dom McGlinchey combined for a smart run-out. Veteran bowler Marc Carson took control, taking four quick wickets to reduce the hosts to 5/57. Camberwell dug deep for a 110run stand before Carson cleaned up the tail. The paceman finished with 7/40 from 18 overs as the Magpies set Geelong 220 for victory. The Cats faced 14 overs to finish day one but lost both openers without scoring a run. James Crosthwaite and Hayden Butterworth again steadied the ship to finish on 2/83 at stumps. Geelong Cricket Association has two rounds remaining, without a clear premiership favourite. The young Newtown & Chilwell side has improved this season but three losses on the trot means its game against East Belmont this round is the last chance to stay in finals contention.
