ALLEGATIONS of secret commissions to Geelong real estate agents have been referred to Victoria Police and consumer affairs watchdogs. The allegations were included in a $1.4 million County Court writ lodged by MMP Greater Geelong, publishers of The Weekly Review, against Hayeswinckle Real Estate. The writ alleges Hayeswinckle was induced to break a contract with the Review to switch its advertising to the Geelong Advertiser. MMP communications director John

Hine said the company had made a complaint about the alleged secret commissions to the police fraud squad, Consumer Affairs Victoria and the Australian Consumer and Competition Commission (ACCC). The Estate Agents Act prohibits agents from retaining rebates or discounts on any goods or services, such as advertising. Rebates or the value of any gifts must be returned to the vendor. “Hayeswinckle vendors have every right to pursue their agent for the rebates we allege he has received from the Advertiser,” Mr Hine said.

The newspaper war broke out late last year between the News Ltd’s Advertiser and the Review over real estate advertising. The Review, part owned by Fairfax Media, signed 25 of Geelong’s real estate agencies to become shareholders in the publication, receiving fixed dividends for set amounts of advertising spend. The writ alleges Hayeswinckle was contracted to spend $470,400 annually in the Review but broke the contract at the behest of News Ltd, receiving $50,000 a year, hospitality and a diamond ring from the Advertiser.

Hayeswinckle also received “uncommercial discounting and the waiver or postponement of long overdue debt”, according to the statement of claim. Mr Hine said the Advertiser’s attempt to claw back lost revenue was “no surprise”. “What they have done is what we expected them to do ... for him (Mr Hayes) to deny this will end him up in a witness box in court and he will look silly.” Mr Hine said the Review entered the Geelong market at the invitation of a group of real estate agents because the Advertiser’s pricing was “ridiculous”. Barwon Health drawn into ‘fake posts’ probe By NOEL MURPHY BARWON Health, already facing bed and surgery reductions from Gillard Government funding cuts, has been embroiled in a pro-Labor fake online messages scandal. Labor-friendly comments posted with the federal parliamentary computer network about Barwon Health are under investigation by Department of Parliamentary Services (DPS). The investigation also covers comments from the network about Colac Area Health, Bulla Dairy Foods and other organisations.

At least nine false names were reportedly used on the one computer under the guises of employees at the various organisations. Liberal senator Michael Ronaldson believed “political operatives” in parliament were “secretly campaigning’’ for the federal seat of Corangamite. Labor’s Darren Cheeseman holds Corangamite with Australia’s narrowest federal margin. “The Department of Parliamentary Services has indicated that, in some cases, the usage by individuals is clear,” Senator Ronaldson told the Independent this week.

“The department has taken on notice and will report back to the committee what the protocol will be if the site is identified as a site that potentially belongs to a member or a senator or their office.” Mr Cheeseman had not returned the Independent’s repeated calls for comment when the paper went to press. The fake online message story emerged in the Colac Herald last week, prompting Mr Ronaldson to attack the Gillard Government’s recent health cuts. Barwon Health is closing 24 beds

and its elective surgery waiting times will blow out by 100 per cent. Colac Area Health has been forced to close its emergency department at night, prompting community outrage. DPS head Carol Mills told a parliamentary committee any offending staff member would present a “code of conduct issue”. “If it was identified as a site that potentially belongs to a member or a senator or their office, we would have to look at that separately,’’ she said. The investigation is expected to report next week.

Geelong enlisted injury-prone North Melbourne ruckman Hamish McIntosh, veteran Melbourne defender Jared Rivers and exciting Gold Coast onballer Josh Caddy during the off-season. Developers renew creek push By NOEL MURPHY TORQUAY’S land war is heating up sharply again, with Christian College and developer Amex ramping up their campaign to have the town’s west approved for housing and a new school. In a flyer to school parents, Christian College has accused Surf Coast Shire of an “incomprehensible” lack of support and reprised Planning Minister Matthew Guy’s attack on it as “the most incompetent (local council) in the state”. Amex has been soliciting signed

statements from Torquay residents on their opinions about the council, councillors and development. The new campaign has begun as the shire exhibits its draft C66 amendment, ruling out housing west of Duffields Rd in Spring Creek. The Christian College flyer asked “parents, relatives, friends and members of the Surf Coast community” to actively support the school bid. “We believe the silent majority is not being heard on this issue,” the flyer stated.

“To defer allowing the process for a new school to even commence is simply nonsensical.” The school argued it had 300 children from the Surf Coast area travelling into Geelong to attend the college’s Highton campus. The school restated its arguments the proposed site had been designated “future urban growth” since 1980. Shire planning officers had told the college the site “met all the requirements for a school” and that the proposed cam-

pus fitted within previous shire development plans. Cr David Bell, previously an outspoken critic of developing the western Spring Creek area, told the Independent he understood the college’s case but said the town had changed significantly since 1980. “To jump in and say ‘Just build it’, that’s not sensible planning. The decision we take now will affect the town and how it grows for the next 30 years. “I’m sick of people harping on.

“Every community has a right to its say in planning. “This isn’t about just 300 kids but 11,000 people.” A spokesperson for Amex, proponent of a Torquay Green residential development, said the survey was a way to “better-understand community needs and concerns’’. The family behind the company had a “strong track record in high quality, sustainable, community focused land development”, he said.

A GEELONG rental business has avoided an Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) undertaking over unfair contracts. Household goods supplier Mr Rental Australia, which has a Ryrie St franchise, will have to refund more than $300,000 to 1560 customers nationally after ASIC ruled it had charged an unfair fee for terminating agreements early. 3000-plus entries make multisport a ‘huge success’ By MICHELLE HERBISON GEELONG Multisport Festival attracted more than 3000 participants over an “extremely successful” three days, according to organisers. USM Events’ Courtney Akrigg praised the Geelong community for its “outstanding” support last weekend. “The event sidelines were filled with cheering friends, families and supporters. There was a fantastic and friendly vibe around the town. “The accommodation houses, cafes and restaurants were busy and the

waterfront was very much alive.” As part of the event, a Geelong Independent Superkidz Triathlon involved an enthusiastic field of children making a splash with a swim, ride and run over a specially-designed kids’ course. Milan Eliadis, 9, crossed the line with a big smile and a sprint finish. “It was so much fun,” she said. “It’s my third triathlon now and I can’t wait to do more.” Each Independent Superkidz finisher was awarded with a commemo-

A BOTTLENECK slide guitar concert will offer Drysdale Festival of Glass exhibitors a social event in the region, according to organisers. Portarlington restaurant Harvester Moon’s Bernard Reed said local guitarist Alister Turrill would entertain festival exhibitors on Saturday night before Sunday’s Festival of Glass. “The Festival of Glass committee wanted to hold something so the exhibitors can come and have a social night out before the event started on Sunday,” Mr Reed said. Mr Reed said Turrill would use an exhibitormade bottleneck slide that would be auctioned at the end of the night along with other products, with funds donated to the festival committee. Mr Reed, daughter Tessa and son William would join Turrill to perform blues standards and contemporary covers. Drysdale Festival of Glass committee chair Doug Carson said the festival would host eight more exhibitors than last year. “Some are doing demonstrations like copper enamelling and stuff we haven’t seen before.” Drysdale Festival of Glass will showcase local and visiting glass artists at Bellarine Secondary College Sports Centre, Peninsula Dve, between 10am and 4pm Sunday.

BARWON Heads’ traders group will seek support from the town’s community association to improve parking, traffic and safety issues. Barwon Heads Traders and Tourism Association spokesperson Bernard Napthine said his group would next week present for discussion its set of priority projects for the town to Barwon Heads Association. “With the two organisations speaking together perhaps there’s more chance we’ll get things happening,” Mr Napthine said.

A survey of traders last year produced the list of goals for immediate, medium-term and longterm action. “We thought that because some of the answers were not just traders issues we should meet with BHA to see which things we’d be able to work on together,” Mr Napthine said. Immediate goals included installing permanent security cameras at both ends of Hitchcock Ave and a permanent tourist information van during summer. Medium-term ideas included using the town’s existing kindergarten site for car parking after

the kinder was removed and development of a “pop-up” business policy. Long-term actions included a walking trails project and streetscape works. Barwon Heads Association president Judith Brooks welcomed the discussions. “Most people would agree we have issues with traffic and civic pride in the town.” Ward councillor Andy Richards called the ideas “sensible”. “I’ll go through them with the traders and council officers to see what we can do and in what timeframe.”

Mr Carson said the event would encourage visitors to enter Drysdale to purchase coffee and food, providing support for the town’s traders. “Last year we got such a lot of good feedback from the traders in town. It was a fantastic day for people poking around Drysdale.” Drysdale Festival of Glass will showcase local and visiting glass artists at Bellarine Secondary College Sports Centre, Peninsula Dve, between 10am and 4pm Sunday.

GEELONG’S “Phantom Knotter’’ has hitched, looped and shanked the city’s waterfront in a frenzy that’s roping in newcomers daily. PK, as he’s also been dubbed, has become an overnight Facebook sensation with fans posting shots of curious and intricate knots he’s hooked and slipped and rolled at numerous sites along the city’s shoreline. The Phantom Knotter, who has targeted posts and poles, bollards, even sculptures, told the Independent he had installed more than 100 rope knots around town. “It’s a bit of novelty and a bit of fun,’’ he said, declining to reveal his identity “just yet’’. “A lot of the knots I put on you can slip off and take away. If they cut them off that’s great too – I like it if people take them as souvenirs. “I’m a member of the International Guild of Knot Tiers and as part of that you try to encourage people to learn about knots.’’ The Phantom Knotter emerged on Facebook page Geelong. He was aware his knots were generating considerable interest. “I came out of the shipping industry,” he said. “I’ve been teaching my grandkids. My grandson’s fairly good and my granddaughter knows how to splice three-strand bits. “It all started when we were out fishing. My granddaughter said ‘I’ll tie a knot out here and see if anyone notices it’.

The Geelong Cycling Club will be holding a cycling race in the Ocean Grove Industrial Estate on Saturday 23rd February 2013. Access to Sinclair St, Everist Rd and Marine Pde will be closed to vehicle traffic between 5pm and 8.30pm.

A CANCER patient left feeling like a “freak” because she is unable to pay for cosmetic surgery says her condition is worsening. Brenda Hoad, 56, of Hamlyn Heights, owes $6000 for operations so far but must pay Barwon Health $3500 up front before she can have surgery to fix a gaping hole in her half-built nose. “The packing in my nose is starting to rot and the fluid seeping out is starting to have a smell,’’ she told the Independent. As a US citizen, Mrs Hoad is ineligible for Medicare benefits. She said she was unable to strike a repayment scheme with Barwon Health, accusing the service of holding her health to ransom. The Independent revealed her plight three weeks ago. “This is now affecting my overall health. I find it hard to sleep and I have constant headaches now,’’ Ms Hoad said. “My eyes go blurry which means I can’t see when they do, which in turn means I need to shut my eyes to get it to go away.

THE first round of funding applications to a Greater Geelong Industry Fund has closed. Exotic taste of orchid addicts ORCHIDS are addictive, according to members of Geelong Orchid and Indoor Plant Club. Just not in the same way as other addictive foliage more usually ingested - these addicts can’t stop collecting and growing more and more of the exotic plant. “You start with a couple, get a few more and before you know it you’re looking for them everywhere,” club secretary Judy Dietrich confided. Fellow member Alf Appleyard agreed. “Anywhere you go you have to include side trips to check out more orchids,” he added. “You find yourself chasing garage sales if they advertise plants to check for orchids. You get so you can spot an orchid at 100 paces. “We’re like bees to the honey pot.” Club members confessed they had around 2000 various orchid plants at different stages of development. “There are more than 30,000 species of orchids worldwide. Orchids have been around a long time,” Judy explained. “There was a time when orchids had their own economy, similar to the historical European tulip economy, when prices of the floral plants skyrocketed.

“Orchids are the most documented of any plant in history through the Kew Botanical Gardens in England.” Judy said orchids were unique for their labellum, or lip, one of the petals that takes on a distinctive shape. They also had a reputation as being rare and difficult to grow, she conceded, but anyone could produce colourful specimens. “We run a new growers group, just on an informal basis, where you can get problems solved and pick up valuable information and tips. “We often visit other growers and learn from them and you can keep up with research and trends. “The group also holds a plant clinic where you can bring along your orchids and get advice.” The club has monthly meetings at Geelong Botanical Gardens, usually featuring a guest speaker, a display and a competition so members can enter their latest prize plant. “We like to take them in and show them off,” Judy laughed.

ADDICTIVE: Orchids have a special allure, according to members of the Geelong club. The club’s regular plants sales were also popular, she said. “You might struggle a bit if there was no club to support you. You can find out so much information.” The club also has two orchid shows a year in winter and spring. Judy said the club hoped to host a Country Challenge for its 50th anniversary in 2015, while members always visited an annual Melbourne Orchid Spectacular. Funding push needs more pier pressure IS IT unreasonable to seek realistic funding levels for both the Great Ocean Road and a local necessity? The mix of a federal election dovetailing into a state election offers an invaluable opportunity, especially given the dually tentative status of governance, to also stump up funding for a local public-private-funded Yarra St pier (Independent, January 25). The cost-effective benefits would be pretty much unquantifiable. Not only would a serious new-

age pier provide a non-invasive multi-purpose convention centre when Simonds Stadium’s Fred Flannigan Room is booked out, it would also provide hospitality and retail alternatives and liner moorings. A new pier would also provide the building block for marina extensions, which Festival of Sail demands, as well as providing closure to the waterfront vision and initiatives of the Kennett government. It has become a common practice for the Gillard Government to not answer opposition questions by ignoring them and instead turning the answer into a vitriolic attack on the coalition. It’s not so if a question is asked by the crossbenchers. The Dorothy Dix questions from the Government benches also turn into a berating of the Liberal and National parties. ALAN Barron holds the view that humans are too puny to affect our environment (Letters, February 8). This statement reflects his profound lack of understanding of the natural world. Rather than succumbing to websites that reinforce his world view, he really should get out more. Seven billion humans, many living profligate lifestyles, are soiling their own nest big time. Leaving aside the never ending argument about carbon dioxide emissions, one only needs to be aware of our choking rivers, fish-free oceans, denuded soils, devastated forests, bleached coral reefs and, most importantly as a result of all of this damage, the worldwide crash in biodiversity to realise humans significantly affect their environment. Let us not despair, however because many in our community are fighting back and showing another way of living. Corporations are powerful enough to influence governments but lose their power if we don’t buy their junk or their shares. For example, electricity demand dropped eight per cent in Australia last year. Much of this was due to solar panels on roofs and more-efficient devices. Also, governments, at least in democracies, that don’t do the people’s bidding can still be voted out. Leigh Adamson Belmont

Free to reference Nazis GAVIN Brown (Letters, February 8) must be intransigent to imply that every reference to the term Nazi is aimed solely at the holocaust of World War II. The Nazis were a political regime before becoming radical and unbalanced. Inevitably they were defeated and obliterated. Mr Brown’s letter was superfluous and designed to promote the contentious issue of anthropogenic climate change. Mr Brown demanded that climate change sceptics be restricted, censored and/or silenced, effectively annihilating any voice that challenges or questions so-called scientists, for environmentalists’ de-industrialisation agenda. Is that democratic? If Mr Brown is so certain the “majority” is proclimate change then the forthcoming federal election should be a landslide win for the Labor-Greens alliance. Its climate-change policies are crippling Australian business, industry, the disadvantaged and poor. Instead, it has virtually guaranteed Tony Abbott and the Liberal party a victory based on the promise to rescind unpopular taxes and policies. Labor voters are devastated! Free speech must be protected and reinforced. Therefore, any reference to Nazis should not necessitate an automatic apology to the Jewish community. The term Nazi refers to a member of the former German National Socialist party, a bona-fide political collective. I hope the Independent will continue to represent the views and opinions of all contributors who have valid information to share with the community, members of which can then make up their own minds. Bounty on the bay I WAS delighted to present the Melbourne-to-Geelong multihull passage race trophy at the largest annual keelboat regatta in the Southern Hemisphere, held in Geelong over the Australia Day weekend. More than 4500 competitors on 320 yachts battled it out for some of Australia’s most prestigious sailing trophies during Geelong’s Festival of Sails. The Baillieu Government recognises the significance of Victoria’s oldest sport event as a standout fixture on the Victorian sailing and tourism calendar. An overall investment of $1 million returned in excess of $8 million of economic benefit to Geelong. The festival, with its numerous shore-side activities, attracted an estimated 100,000 visitors over the long weekend. It is another reminder of the immense popularity of Geelong’s waterfront. The Baillieu Government is proud to be part of the festival’s continued growth and success and looks forward to Melges 24 2014 World Championships in January. Colac filmmakers on the run By MICHELLE HERBISON A LOCALLY-FILMED movie coming to Geelong is all about following your dreams – even if they are a bit backward. Young Colac filmmaking team Jarrod Theodore and Lachlan Ryan say they are enjoying unprecedented success with their quirky Aussie sporting comedy, Reverse Runner. The film premieres at Geelong’s Village Cinemas on 21 February after becoming Colac cinema’s “third most-successful film of all time” with more than 4000 attendees. Theodore said the movie’s hero was “slightly backwards” Kid Campbell who “doesn’t fit in” until he discovers the sport of reverse running at an “Alternate Athletics”. “Kid Campbell gets sucked into the world of the Alternate Athletics, which has things like chair-throwing and the 100m backwards sprint – all the sports no one else wants – and he finds a lot of obstacles along the way.” Geelong’s John Landy Athletics Field features in the film as the site of the athletics competition. Marathon runner Steve Moneghetti, sports commentator Bruce McAvaney, comedian Dave Callan and Geelong actor Bianca Linton make appearances in the film.

Theodore and Ryan travelled to the United States to successfully lure The Mighty Ducks director Stephen Herek into the role of executive producer. The story’s theme of “following your childhood dreams” and “doing something left of centre” rings true with the film-making pair, who grew up together in Colac making films, then both attended film school in Melbourne. “Growing up in a small country town, most of our mates were playing footy and cricket when we’d want them to be acting in our films,” Theodore remembered. Theodore and Ryan spent four tireless years working on the self-financed film in between jobs in radio and television. They created the idea for the Alternate Athletics after main actor Dan Cannon saw a fun backwards race at a sports carnival. The team since discovered reverse running enthusiasts actually do exist. Theodore said he and Ryan “never planned” Reverse Runner would be such a success. “We were just these young kids running around with a camera. We never thought it’d be the biggest film in our home town, let alone branch out to Geelong.”

> 2 sheets frozen puff pastry, (thawed toroom temp) > 1x 190g can whole champignons

3. Remove chicken meat from bones and cut into bite size pieces, disgarding all bones, skin and gristle. Place in large bowl. 4. Drain champignons, and if large cut in half and add to chicken meat. 5. Add enough gravy so chicken is well coated and moist. 6. roll one sheet of pastry to fit shallow, round plate and trim edge. 7. Add chicken mixture, lightly wet edge/rim with water and then cover with second pastry sheet and trim edge.

> 2-3 tablespoons gravy powder

8. Crimp edges of pastry together and make 2 slits in middle of pie to allow steam to escape.

> Milk or egg wash

9. Brush with milk or egg wash and bake for aproximately 25mins untill pastry has risen and is golden brown.

Her fans were to thank for securing songs Heart and Prettiest Thing in top 20 positions in the pop genre last year, she said. Brough admitted she found the “drive” to record EP Counting Waves after supporting Lisa Mitchell at a Bended Elbow gig last June.

“I just thought ‘Wow, this is the big time’ and I knew I needed something professional to show people. “So I jumped into gear and recorded Counting Waves at university while I was studying.” Brough hoped to record a new EP or possibly an album this year despite her “hectic” honours studies for Contemporary Music. “I’ve been writing some new music, so hopefully,” she said cheerfully.

GEELONG singer-songwriter Imogen Brough thinks she has Enya’s ethereal music “built in” because her parents played it so much when she was young. It’s little wonder then that Brough would build a singing career on emulating the Celtic singer’s style – with a signature twist, of course. “I’d love to mix Enya’s ethereal sound with modern-day pop music,” Brough told the Independent. “Even if that means creating music for radio and then a producing separate world-music style.” Brough will headline Celtics in Concert at Ocean Grove Hotel this Friday night alongside an array of local Celtic music performers. Brough said she was yet to perform with any of the other acts but was “glad” organiser and musician Jill Meehan asked her to be involved. “It’s always exciting to meet new local artists and perform with them.” Brough spent the summer “singing and holidaying” after earning gigs at Torquay’s Café Moby and Lorne’s Pacific Hotel. She was “pulling people in” from the sea during her regular Monday performances at Pacific Hotel. “Swimmers and kayakers would say they could hear me sing from the water so they came

THE Peninsula Hotel will host a charity auction night next week to put roofs over the heads of African orphans. The night will raise money for House of Angels, an orphanage under development in Coffee Bay, South Africa. Geelong travel agent April Selby is helping organise the fundraiser after becoming involved with the orphanage during work-related trips to South Africa. Ms Selby says she was inspired to help after meeting the orphanage’s founder, Angel, as she worked at a hotel catering to tourists. Angel started work on the project to help local children orphaned after the deaths of parents to various diseases including AIDS, typhoid and hepatitis. Ms Selby has provided Angel with advice and support to begin the development of House of Angels, which has so far secured a site and built a simple

OBERON High School has an exemplary record achieving a high level of success for school leavers. In 2012, 98 per cent of Oberon’s year 12 students went into full-time further education, training or employment. Thirty-five per cent of students obtained an ATAR score of above 70 and the school’s senior VCAL students achieve a 100 per cent completion rate, with 90 per cent of students who applied for a university place successful. The remainder obtained positions in TAFE, apprenticeships, traineeships or employment. Oberon encourages year 11 students to begin their final VCE studies early to maximise their ATAR score, which helps many achieve in excess of 40 out of 50 for their study scores. Obtaining equal top state school results for VCE 2012 in the Geelong area, Oberon is proud of its students. School dux Lachlan Douglass had an ATAR score of 97.3. He is now undertaking a degree in biomedical studies at Melbourne University.

KARDINIA International College again remains at the top of the class, with eight students achieving ATAR scores above 99 and 52 with scores above 90. The 2012 results were in line with Kardinia’s impressive record in 2011 when nine students were above 99. Half of the 2012’s high scores were students studying VCE, while the others were from the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma. HONDA Insight was the first ever petrol-electric hybrid car to go on sale in Australia, pre-dating the better known Toyota Prius by about six months. That vehicle, launched to a startled public in 2001, was very much an engineering special. Designed to showcase Honda’s long standing reputation for being conscious of the environment, that Insight had unusual aerodynamic lines owing more to the wind tunnel than the stylist’s pen. The latest Insight, launched in 2011, was also shaped in the wind tunnel, but being visually pleasing was also part of the design brief. The shape is also a foretaste of another model, the Honda CR-Z, a sporting hybrid. Honda Insight is a practical fivedoor hatchback with room for four adults, it has a voluminous boot as the battery and other hybrid components have been scaled down in size compared with previous Honda hybrids. Insight can easily be used as a family car. A small 1.3-litre four-cylinder petrol engine is coupled with an electric motor, positioned between the engine and the continuously variable transmission. The electric motor chips in with power during acceleration and sometimes while cruising as well as capturing energy from the vehicle’s momentum during braking. Rated fuel consumption is 4.6 litres per 100 kilometres on the combined Australian driving cycle, although the best we achieved during our review was 5.1 L/100 km. Overall the Insight was running in the 5.5 to 6.0 range most of the time. This consumption is matched by some small diesel cars. However, the Honda is decidedly cleaner with carbon dioxide emissions measured at 109 grams per km on the official test. Honda Insight has earned a fivestar ANCAP crash rating. All cars are equipped with Honda’s Vehicle Stability Assist system, designed to come to the driver’s aid in cornering, during acceleration and sharp manoeuvres by applying braking to the right or left-hand wheels as needed, as well as

Electric power-assisted rack-andpinion steering provides smooth feedback from the road, while anti-skid brakes with electronic brake force distribution ensures firm yet linear braking. Push a green (what other colour would it be?) button on the dashboard and a small forest of trees sprout on the display screen and lose their leaves according to how much fuel is being used and pollution emitted. Stop the Insight at the lights or a road junction and . . . silence! Power is automatically shut down to help save fuel. Other than that, and the different powertrain sound created by the use of the continuously variable transmission, the new Honda Insight sounds and feels much like any other car. Road holding and comfort are good, though not exactly in a sporting manner as economy tyres are used. Selecting Sport mode appears to make little difference to how the car responds (maybe it needs more urging) and steering wheel-mounted shift paddles seem over the top. The Insight is at its best in stopstart city driving, the bonus being constant braking topping up the battery when the car slows and/or brakes. Though aimed at city driving, where a hybrid makes the most sense, Honda Insight is capable enough on the open road. We did feel there was too much road noise on coarse-chip surfaces, but on smooth roads the Insight is quieter than average. Rough surfaces do upset the ride at times but not to the extent of being dangerous. This isn’t the sort of car aimed at drivers in the great Aussie bush but for the occasional holiday trip it will work well enough. The VTi receives LED daytime running lights, integrated Bluetooth with steering-wheel mounted controls and new door mirrors with side turn indicators. The VTi-L receives the same LED daytime running lights and a leather gear shift knob. Honda has big ambitions for hybrid technology and is aiming to have hybrid technology in 10 per cent of all Australian Hondas within three years.

Batting first against Modewarre, the Tigers raced to 8/212 from just 48 overs, with Jayden Hicks top scoring on 69 before a timely declaration by Brad Grapsas. Hicks again starred, this time with the ball, tak-

ing 4/22 to see Modewarre all out for 89. An outright seems assured for Thomson in a result that will virtually assure finals action. With most games going to plan in division three, Teesdale looks the only side capable of causing an upset and significantly rearranging the ladder. Bowling first against Shelford last week, Teesdale toiled hard to dismiss its host for 180. Shaun Campbell was the pick of the bowlers taking 4/47, while Sam Campbell leant good support with 3/26. For Shelford, Michael Lymer top-scored with 86 before being unfotunately run out just shy of a welldeserved century. In reply, Teesdale had to survive 13 overs and did so with a positive attitude, knocking 65 runs off its target without the loss of a wicket. A likely win tomorrow will keep Teesdaleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s finals hopes alive.

GREAT weather produced outstanding action on Corio Bayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s outer-harbour for soft plastics anglers over the past week. Danny Clapinski and Peter Baceley enjoyed fantastic results, landing a nice bag of snapper to 4kg on Gulp swimming mullet in the Pumpkinseed colour. Greg and Nathan Little fished the same area, returning with four fish all better than 3kg apiece and reporting that some nice rock flathead were also encountered. Tim Carroll and Bianca Gordon found a patch of snapper on the shallow grass beds, catching a dozen pinkies to 45cm on a variety of Gulp soft plastics. Don Collins fished the channel edge of Wilson Spit for a bag-limit catch of snapper, most around 38cm but the largest hitting 4.3kg. Don caught half his fish on salted pilchard and the rest on soft plastics. Squid were taken on the grass beds between Clifton Springs and Leopold from first light to around 8.30am. Small natural-coloured jigs were best. Troy Parked fished close in at Bird Rock where he found whiting and garfish busy as the tide started to run off from high. Daniel Pullen trolled over the reefy ground between Point Lillias and the quarries where he was plagued by pike, some close to 1m. He used a deepdiving Sebile Koolie minnows in water averaging under 4m. The best whiting action was generally enjoyed from St Leonards to Queenscliff. Paul Dean landed his bag limit of fish to 44cm twice in close to Edwards Point.

Tye Parker also fishing close to the entrance of Swan Bay where his berley trail brought a flathead to the back of the boat. The 78cm fish was the biggest of seven landed for the afternoon. Reasonable numbers of salmon were present in The Rip area. Trolling close to Bell Reef on a line heading toward Corsair Rock soon located shoals. When southerly winds werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t cursing surf anglers Black Rock, Cinema Point and many areas just past Lorne were productive. Surf spin anglers continued taking reasonable numbers of salmon, with fish over 2kg landed at Cinema Point of late. High tides were clearly best. Spin anglers working the Barwon River upstream of Buckley Falls caught redfin fishing on lure while constantly moving in search of a shoal. Paul Harper fished downstream of the Ceres Bridge where he caught plenty of small reddies but landed eight

around 900g by the end of the day, with a Mepps Aglia spinner in the Phosphorescent colour working best. Below Buckley Falls was best for carp action, especially during late afternoon and into the evening. Lake Purrumbete remained consistent for quality trout on bait and lure. Garry Welsh cast lures from his kayak near Shag Rock where he landed a 4.7kg brown after a 20-minute battle. Lake Tooliorook hosted plenty of anglers who caught trout to more than 3kg. Trolling Tassie Devils close to shore was productive, while land-based anglers had results casing lures after wading out a little. Harry Watts fished fly after dark at Lake Wendouree, catching six fish just under 1kg in two hours on Monday night with a floating mudeye pattern. Bluefin tuna were caught off Portland to the

South Australian border. Fish over 35kg were boated but Aaron Page reported sighting fish he estimated around 50kg in only 35m of water. Small lures such as Zukers, Pirates, Clones along with bibbed offerings from Rapala have been working. This weekendâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s tides should be ideal for the surf, with late afternoon best for salmon on lure before changing to bait for snapper as the evening progresses. In freshwater, Wurdee Boluc Reservoir should be worth trying with lures such as Tiger minnows, squidgy slick rigs and larger bladed spinners.
