By MICHELLE HERBISON A GROUP of players from a northern Geelong football club assaulted three people “without provocation” early Sunday morning, according to police. Sergeant Aaron Riches told the Independent a 20-year-old victim received serious injuries requiring hospital treatment after being punched in the face “without rhyme or reason”. About six players were reportedly involved in the assaults after being refused entry to several nightclubs due to their behaviour and attire. “The first incident occurred about 2am at the front of Home House nightclub where players seemingly for no reason assaulted two bystanders and a security guard. We’d love to hear from anyone who saw that incident,” Sgt Riches said. “The offenders were Caucasian males aged between 18 and 22 with brown to light-brown hair.” Sgt Riches said the alleged offenders then went to Little Malop St where they were refused entry to three nightclubs. Within two minutes of inflicting serious injuries on the 20-year-old at the corner of Shorts Pl and Little Malop St they attacked another man in Moorabool St who was with his partner. “It was just wayward aggression. There were three or four aggressors of that group of six,” Sgt Riches said. Police had identified one member of the group but were reviewing CCTV footage, he said. ‘Cesspit’ stalls Rip Curl sale plans THE owners of iconic Torquay surf brand Rip Curl have abandoned their plans to sell. Majority co-owners Brian Singer and Doug Warbrick pulled the plug on the $400 million sale because the market was a “cesspit”. Mr Singer was reported to have said the two surf mates, who founded Rip Curl in 1969,

would exit the business in the “next few years”. Rip Curl appointed Merrill Lynch in September to investigate sale options. But the lacklustre market conditions, including competing surfwear giant Billabong’s plummeting share price, thwarted the sale deal at this juncture.

Billabong disclosed a halfyearly net loss of $536 million last month, following an annual net loss last year of $275 million. Rip Curl posted a net loss of $3.6 million last year but the company said it incorporated $4.5 million of costs for a restructure due to take place this year.

Lord sceptic to ruffle Geelong GEELONG industries face crippling extra costs that could imperil hundreds of jobs under the Gillard Government’s carbon tax, according to global warming critic Lord Christopher Monckton. The outspoken climate change opponent, snubbed this week by the PM and who has challenged the Greens to debate him publicly, will outline what he argues is a massive scam when he visits Geelong this month. Lord Monckton told the Independent climate change fears were based on a “scam” driven by a “deluded’’ political class hellbent on undermining fossil fuel and other industries that were the biggest financial donors of their opponents. He said no global warming had been recorded in the past 17 years and that the costs of trying to stop temperatures rising constituted a savage attack on the

it would be 36 to 48 times cheaper to let it happen and pay to adapt, he said. Lord Monckton said the carbon tax was driving a growing number of industry and mining shutdowns across Australia, which could be replicated at Geelong. He criticised mainstream media for “not letting people know there are facts on the other side”. “We have to get away from politicising science and working out what will happen, not futile exaggerations. “Huge profits are being made at the expense of working people who will be hurt first and worst.’ “I think there’s a political class worldwide that got greedy, and some got quite deluded, that’s driving the scam. “A large number of people find it expedient and financially profitable to pretend there’s a problem.”

Study finds peninsula link to bypass feasible By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A $300,000 VicRoads study has confirmed the feasibility of extending Geelong’s ring road to the Bellarine Peninsula. VicRoads regional director southwestern region William Tieppo said the preliminary investigation studied the possibility of crossing the Barwon River at Armstrong Creek. “A preliminary investigation confirmed the possibility of linking the proposed crossing of the Barwon River in the Armstrong Creek urban growth area to the Geelong-Portarlington Rd,” Mr Tieppo said. “Further detailed work is required,

in consultation with the City of Greater Geelong and the community, to determine the route alignment.” The City has lobbied for the extension, describing it as “vital for suitable long-term residential and commercial development”. “This link, including a river crossing, is yet to receive commitment from the federal and state governments,” the City’s website said. A ring road extension to the peninsula would reduce east-west traffic congestion through central Geelong, the city said. The extension would also reduce traffic through residential suburbs and

townships and increase tourism opportunities through “easier accessibility”. The City said the link would improve access to the ring road, particularly for Moolap’s industrial area and residents of the peninsula. Armstrong Creek planning set aside land for the extension from Surf Coast Hwy to the Barwon River. “Land has already been nominated within the approved north-east industrial precinct structure plan for this future road link,” the City said. The Independent reported in August that VicRoads had begun studying the feasibility of the peninsula link.

Then mayor John Mitchell said the extension was one of the City’s priorities and the “missing piece of the region’s infrastructure”. VicRoads had previously said the ring road’s 4C Surf Coast Hwy extension had no allowance for a connection to the peninsula. But Cr Mitchell said the initial ring road plans had already accommodated three extensions and could do so again. South Barwon MP Andrew Katos told the Independent last year that any peninsula link alignment would be an arterial road, with several sets of lights, instead of a freeway.

GMHBA campaigns GEELONG health insurer GMHBA has launched a campaign against Gillard Government cuts to private coverage rebates. GMHBA chief Mark Valena said the cuts threatened higher costs for private health cover and greater pressure on the public system as policy holders drop their coverage.

Leopold bayfront GEELONG’S council will complete its investigation of public access from Leopold to Corio Bay on 15 March. The investigation follows developer Denis More’s attempts to create a waterfront tourism and leisure park including a boat harbour, holiday accommodation and café.

Leaders call on golfers to play for McKellar Centre THE leaders of two of the region’s biggest organisations have called for entries to an annual golf day raising money for Geelong’s McKellar Centre. Mayor Keith Fagg and Barwon Health chair Dr John Stekelenberg joined forces this week to back the 18th annual McKellar Centre Charity Golf Day. The Independent event has so

far raised over $400,000 for the region’s peak public rehabilitation and aged care facility. Participants in this year’s event will help the centre gather funds for a portable machine to diagnose balance problems. The equipment will be particu-

Cr Bell, who has agreed to the college’s demands, was elected to council after leading a community campaign against developing Spring Creek. The college’s demands follow a 2007 Supreme Court ruling that councillors could face penalties for making “preapprehensive” decisions on planning matters. Cr Bell told the Independent in October that the Winki Pop decision could

leave councillors “constantly caught up in being seen as biased for speaking on a matter publicly”. Surf Coast’s Heather Wellington, a lawyer, also absented herself from council discussion on plans for a regional motorcycling facility at Barrabool after opposing the project before her election. Geelong Residents and Ratepayers’ Association president and lawyer Andrew Senia said councillors had a

democratic right to speak publicly about matters on which they had successfully campaigned, as long as they kept an open mind on planning applications. Surf Coast’s 3228 Residents’ Association president, Sid Pope, said the Winki Pop ruling was unjust when state and federal MPs escaped similar limitations. “Any action that restricts a council from restricting views at council level is a blow for democracy,” Mr Pope said.

LAWS preventing councillors voting on their election campaign issues are a blow to democracy, according to residents’ groups. Surf Coast and Geelong residents and ratepayers’ associations said a legal threat preventing Torquay Ward’s David Bell from voting on any development proposal for Spring Creek highlighted

how the law stopped councillors representing their constituents. Cr Bell revealed this week that Christian College had sent him a letter threatening legal action if at council he spoke or voted on Spring Creek proposals. The college wants to develop a campus on its land in Spring Creek but Surf Coast is considering a planning scheme amendment that would lock development out of the area.

Big Cats sink teeth into fund-raiser for kids THE CATS are putting their buns on the line to raise money for a charity helping kids with brain damage. Trent West sank his teeth into Hot Cross Buns Week when fellow ruckman Hamish McIntosh, the Cats’ face of the fund-raiser, was subbed out of promoting the event due to his own dental issues.

Hot Cross Buns Week will raise money for Kids Plus Foundation, which helps children with cerebral palsy and other brain problems. The foundation provides over 3500 hours of free therapy each year in the Barwon region. Kids Plus operates without government funding, instead

depending on community support through fund-raisers such as Hot Cross Buns Week. The foundation has partnered with Routley’s bakeries to deliver hot cross buns to groups hosting morning tea fund-raisers during the week, from 25 to 28 March. Organisers said participants contributed $2 for each

Dogs blamed for plovers’ ‘breeding failure’ By MICHELLE HERBISON A BIRD expert has blamed unleashed dogs for endangered hooded plovers’ seventh consecutive unsuccessful breeding season at Barwon Heads’ 13th Beach. BirdLife Australia’s Grainne Maguire said the use of leashes was “not majorly improving” in the area, despite public education campaigns. This year only two chicks at Black Rock survived from

Hooded plovers reacted to perceived threats from unleashed dogs at three times the distance from their nest than human threats, she said. “It’s quite complex to explain how the dogs impact the birds. It’s all very cumulative. “It adds up to birds being

off their eggs for long periods of time.” Barwon Coast’s Warren Chapman said “effective control” of dogs was required at 13th Beach, with temporary signage during nesting periods requesting owners leash their pets and walk away from dunes. Mr Chapman said Barwon Coast would review its dog control system with City of Greater Geelong and consider introducing fines.

Young star helps artist reflect on Archibald By MICHELLE HERBISON A BELMONT artist’s impression of a young Newtown actor is an entrant in Australia’s prestigious Archibald prize. The 36-by-48-inch oil-on-linen portrait of Edwina Royce is Renee Abbott’s second Archibald entry after painting Geelong radio personality Denis Walter for the 2005 competition. Ms Abbott told the Independent Edwina, a seven-year-old star of TV’s House Husbands, enjoyed sitting for the portrait entitled Edwina’s Serene Reflections. “She found the exercise quite fun and dressing up was a real treat.” Edwina’s experience posing for photographs and television cameras helped her endure a three-hour sitting. Ms Abbott then spent two to three weeks on the painting, with photographs aiding her work. “I’m more accustomed to painting adults, so it was probably more difficult. I thought it would be quite a distinguishing difference to capture a child, especially compared with an older adult with a more developed face.” Ms Abbott has painted portraits since she was a child but receiving two fine arts scholarships in the mid-1990s prompted her to pursue competitions. She pioneered a medium called “super-realism”, highlighting every feature in dynamic colour and shade. “I like to bring a picture to life. I believe capturing a live image such as an animal or a human being enables me to capture a frame of existence.” Ms Abbott said she had held about six art exhibitions in Geelong and Ballarat and had worked in television and as a songwriter, recently releasing her fifth album.

Hotels ‘use dodgy data on gaming’ By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN APPLICATIONS for extra pokies in Geelong have been based on “wobbly data”, according to a Geelong councillor. Cr Jan Farrell said evidence around “transfer spend”, often used to support applications for additional pokies, was untested and unreliable. Geelong council is leading a statewide campaign to improve research and information on transfer spend, which represented the transfer of poker machine income from other venues, as opposed to new spend, representing increased gambling and potential rises in problem gambling. Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation recently approved hotels’ pokies applications for 20 extra at Lara and 40 at Fyansford, with 14 at Waurn Ponds and four at North Geelong’s Sphinx to come. Council last week backed a motion from Cr Farrell calling for the commission to research the issue.

Cr Farrell’s motion said the Sphinx’s application argued that 71 per cent of its income would come from neighbouring venues, while Fyansford Hotel argued for a 75 per cent transfer. “One of the difficulties faced by expert witnesses in producing transferred expenditure forecasts and councils in assessing and scrutinising such figures is that the VCGLR does not release all of the relevant data required. “The lack of available expenditure data, coupled with the lack of input from the VCGLR in this area, undermines the reliability of transferred expenditure predictions.” Cr Farrell said Municipal Association of Victoria and the Victorian Local Government Association would also raise the issue, urging other councils to pass similar motions. The lack of information led to inaccurate applications, with both under-estimations and over-estimations of transferred expenditure, she said.

STATE Government wants community feedback on likely rail routes to Avalon Airport. The Government said the feedback would help decide a preferred option from three routes on the drawing board. The link will run alongside the Melbourne-Geelong line, veering off

The Matthews Road, Lovely Banks section of current major drainage works is scheduled to commence Wednesday 13 March and will take approximately three weeks to complete. The project will consist of installing a new stormwater drain crossing the road and then traveling north along the west side of Matthews Road including the installation of three new pits. Access through Matthews Road will be restricted to one lane at a time beginning Wednesday 13 March until the completion of the job. Hours of work will between 7.00am and 5.00pm.

The next meeting of the Central Geelong Marketing Committee will be held at the Central Geelong Marketing Office, 100 Brougham Street, Geelong on Tuesday 19 March at 7.30am.

During the construction period we recommend that the through traffic seek an alternative route where practically possible to reduce traffic congestion in the area.

Guilty plea on insider trades

A BARWON Heads stockbroker has pleaded guilty to two charges of insider trading. Norman Graham, the former managing director of stockbroking firm Lonsec Limited, admitted to selling 200,000 shares in a company using inside information, according to Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC). ASIC said the charges related to an order Mr Graham placed on 26 February, 2010, to sell the shares in Clean Seas Tuna across two client accounts while still serving as Lonsec’s managing director.

ASIC alleged Mr Graham knew when he sold the shares that Clean Seas Tuna was about to announce a financial loss of more than $10 million. He also knew that the company’s southern bluefin tuna fingerlings had died, with both events lowering the company’s share price, ASIC alleged. Mr Graham was bailed to appear for a plea hearing in Victorian County Court on 16 May. Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions is prosecuting the case against him. Mr Graham was no longer a director of Lonsec, ASIC said. ASIC records show that

Financial Research Holdings bought Lonsec in June. Financial Research Holdings is a consortium under the leadership of private equity specialist Mark Carnegie, with SuperRatings as a part owner. Records also reveal at least seven directors and senior office holders left Lonsec between late 2010 and late 2011. The Independent does not suggest any of the resignations were linked to the ASIC investigation or that serving Lonsec directors and employees were subject to ASIC proceedings.

More kids ‘sticking up’ for hockey JUNIOR hockey is experiencing a growth spurt as Geelong’s biggest club prepares for the 2013 season. Newtown Hockey Club’s Claire Barnes said numbers in the under-6 joeys and under-8 minkey competitions had increased markedly in the past two years. Ms Barnes said Newtown fielded 18 teams from among its 260 members, with the littlies playing on a grass pitch at King Lloyd Reserve. “They spend most of the time having fun and learning the basic skills. They don’t really play matches as such,” she said.

The teenage and senior teams play at Stead Park, recently awarded $650,000 in State Government funding for a second synthetic hockey pitch. “The second pitch at Stead Park will make it easier for teams to play. We have new clubs in Torquay and Golden Plains around Bannockburn coming along. “Playing on a good surface is an incentive to improve skills and it creates a reputation for hockey as well as a pathway for people. “Our representative teams play at a good level in Melbourne in the Hockey Victoria competition.” Ms Barnes said perceptions

that hockey was a dangerous sport had eased in comparison with worries of serious injuries in other sports, including the concussion debate surrounding Aussie Rules. “Hockey is non-contact. Summer overall was the warmest since 1981 and warmer than the long-term normal by an adjusted .8C, which helps explain the lower rainfall.

$10m works boost dementia beds By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A $10 MILLION redevelopment project to help Geelong cope with increased demand for dementiaspecific beds is under way at North Geelong’s Multicultural Aged Care Services (MACS). Chief executive Joy Leggo said the preparatory infrastructure work had begun on the first two stages of the four-stage development, expected to take 18 months. The fourth stage would include 30 dementia beds as part of a Federal Government allocation, Ms Leggo said. The Independent reported last year that Geelong faced the highest prevalence of dementia cases in Victoria. Ms Leggo said the statistics were frightening. She feared the region would be unable to keep up with the demands of its ageing population.

A QUILT filled with handprints and personal references on the wall of the lounge area at Geelong’s Anam Cara House encapsulates the spirit of the place. Each guest at Anam Cara receives a square on the quilt, letting them know both they and their life story are important. Anam Cara House Geelong is a community service providing care for people with life-limiting illnesses and also provides respite for carers. “Everyone becomes a member of the Anam Cara family,” volunteer Erika said. “It’s a privilege to be involved in people’s lives at a time like that.” And while they are totally sincere in their attitude, it doesn’t mean the Anam Cara lounge is a solemn place. Far from it. The group of volunteers often holds theme days, such as portraying timeless Scots poet Robbie Burns complete with kilt. Fun and laughter are part of making each day worthwhile. “Families realise the importance of the quilt afterwards,” Erika observed. “Often they will discover some little part of a loved one’s life that they had not known or had overlooked.” Erika was one of the founding members of Anam Cara’s volunteer group after retiring from her nursing career but feeling she still had something to offer. “I think I still have something to give and I believe in what we have here. We’ve received so much support in setting it up, so it has touched a lot of other people as well.” Fellow volunteer Marg was previously involved

“Most of us join by word of mouth and sometimes volunteers come in off the street but we can always use more help,” she smiled. “We occasionally go out and talk to clubs or get publicity but mostly it’s through the friends and family network. “We do our own fund-raising, like holding an art show and a trivia night. FORD and other car-makers are seeking a clearer deal on federal tax and customs charges to avoid a double-tax slug under new laws on overseas purchases. Changes to transfer pricing rules for both income tax and custom duty would directly impact on the Geelong manufacturer, Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries has warned. Chamber boss Tony Weber, acting on behalf of Australian car-makers and major importers of cars and motorbikes, highlighted inconsistencies between tax and customs laws to Federal Government. But a bill to bring the taxes in line would affect not just the auto industry, a significant importer of goods and services, but also numerous other manufacturers across the country. The Exposure Draft Tax Laws (Cross-Border Transfer pricing) Bill 2013 relates to transfer pricing benefits available to companies when involved in overseas purchases. But when calculating the benefit companies’ taxable income and overall profitability is gauged rather than the pricing of overseas transactions. Aimed at tightening laws under which companies can lower their tax liabilities, car-makers fear the new laws would increase their charges. “We request a whole of government approach to transfer pricing, not only from an income tax perspective, but also in relation to customs duty,” Mr Weber wrote to Treasury. “The government has previously committed to a whole of government approach to legislation and this approach needs to be reflected in the modernisation of the transfer pricing rules.” A Ford spokesman said the chamber was handling the issue on Ford’s behalf and declined to comment further.

THE Ocean Grove sports pavilion debate has been hijacked for political gain. In 2007 Ocean Grove Community Association got the sports groups together, resulting in a master plan study and capital works implementation report. This document was used to lobby all levels of government. Cr Jan Farrell took the initiative to seek funding for the project. She successfully obtained $2 million each from council and Federal Government and a commitment from the previous Labor Victorian government of $5 million before the last state election but the coalition State Government has yet to make a commitment. The recent stage one expenditure of the federal funds on infrastructure upgrades was necessary and logical because without them a pavilion could not operate. Due to the lack of state funding the project cannot proceed and the debate has turned to providing temporary facilities when it should be forcing the Victorian coalition to provide a $2 million contribution. Ocean Grove should not be held to ransom until the next state election. Federal Liberal candidate Sarah Henderson is wrong to make out it is a federal issue. When she writes an open letter demanding that State Government allocates its contribution I might take notice of her commitment to Ocean Grove. Michael Harbour Ocean Grove

Press case for freedom HAS Goshen Watts (Letters, March 1) ever heard of freedom of the press? It’s a greatly valued principle in a democratic society. It means we are all entitled to express our thoughts. That’s why the Independent shouldn’t ban letters from “climate deniers”, as Mr Watts called them, just as it doesn’t have the right to banish his pro-climate-change theories. Input from both sides of any debate gives readers the chance to sum up the alternatives and form their own opinions. Biased newspapers are not popular with readers. We should all be thankful for a free press, even when it provides information that we don’t appreciate. Melva Stott Anglesea

KEITH Fagg’s mayoral role was never going to be a walk in the park. Merging his business autonomy, expertise, wealth and success with essentially moribund local governance and an array of state entities along with new councillor colleagues places Cr Fagg firmly between a rock and a hard a place. Media coverage of him should cease dancing around the periphery with patronising questions and open-ended, shallow commentary. Cr Fagg advocated CBD rejuvenation via residential options and non-essential truck-free carriageways. A mix of tenancy skewed to cashed-up retirees is required but, given Deakin University’s capacity to attract federal funding, has City of Greater

HARD PLACE: Mayor Keith Fagg. Geelong flagged, and at what levels, accelerated support to create a Deakin-led vibrant residential CBD? It’s puzzling why the mayor must be an apologist for the continuance of unnecessary truck incursions. Why can’t VicRoads become accountable, putting in place a 7am-to-7pm curfew on CBD trucks other than whitegoods deliveries?

Climate least of worries WHO does Goshen Watts think he is? First, I am neither a denier nor an alarmist, as he obviously is. I consider myself an analyst with 45 years of keen interest in the climate and its debates. Secondly, why does he think he is right? The International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is a government-controlled organisation peddling its own tune. Anyone can submit to it an article, which is often reviewed by unqualified people who pass it to the next reviewers before publication if it fits government guidelines. This usually works toward alarmist theories, for which more government money is available. Climate scientists are increasingly saying global warming is not anthropogenic and, in fact, the past

Also, where does the mayoral role effectively sit in the regional blur created by a multiplicity of advocacy stakeholders - the City, G21, Committee for Geelong and Geelong Chamber Of Commerce as well as manufacturing and union groups? The 14 September poll offers, along with a state election in 2014, a probably not-to-berepeated regional opportunity to make infrastructure hay. 8000 years show decreasing average temperatures. It doesn’t take much to find reputable websites with this information. Does Mr Watts know the 250-plus factors that influence climate? I doubt it. What about the increase in ice deposits in the Antarctic and Arctic, unreported by the IPCC because it is only interested in the coastal ice fringes? What about the below-average temperatures in many places around the world? Does Mr Watts remember the world-wide panic in the 1970s when governments thought we were going into an ice age? They were about to seed the upper-atmosphere with ferrous compounds to warm the planet until thwarted by “deniers”. The worst factors affecting the planet are overpopulation and apathy. WHEN I read letters from Goshen Watts I feel like the reformer Martin Luther standing against a strong entrenched religious orthodoxy purporting to be the only way to salvation. Only this time the religion is environmentalism as preached by zealots like Mr Watts. In case he hasn’t realised, freedom of speech is the crucial platform underpinning democracy. Destroy it and democracy withers on the vine. His claims are baseless and only show the desperate level to which global warming alarmists descend in order to stampede the media and society into accepting global warming theory. When it comes to climate change, we are not talking about established scientific fact. Rather, we are talking about speculation on future weather, which is not subject to the scientific method of testing hypothesises and verification of data. If Mr Watts is so keen on saving the planet, does his house have energy-consuming appliances allegedly causing all those polluting black balloons? OVER the period of 9 to 24 February Geelong participated in a 14th Sustainable Living Festival. This year the Melbourne-based organisers extended the invitation to regional areas to participate in the festival’s My State of Sustainability program. Community groups and small businesses in our area put their hands up to host 40-plus events in Geelong. Outside Melbourne, our town held the largest cluster of activities in the state. The events ranged from educational and inspirational lectures, food swaps, open garden tours, films, workshops on how to grow fruit and vegetables, make cheeses and jams and preserves, just to name a few. I congratulate and thank all of the people involved in this initiative. Our future sustainability is all of our responsibility and I was inspired to think there are so many people in our town who are interested and care about making Geelong a more sustainable place to live and work. SINGING is especially liberating for Craig Horne, singersongwriter for Melbourne blues band The Hornets. A stutter impairs his speaking voice but his words become fluent when singing. “I suppose it’s the one time when I can actually express myself vocally. I don’t think anyone quite understands why it happens but I think it’s relatively common for people with my affliction,” Horne told the Independent. The Hornets brings together some of the country’s best veteran musicians. Jining Horne are guitarist Jeff Burstin (Jo Jo Zep and the Falcons, The Black Sorrows), bassist Wayne Duncan (Daddy Cool), drummer Chris Tabone (The Bad Loves) and keyboardist Bruce Haymes (Paul Kelly and Renee Geyer bands). The band’s dark, bluesy sound has been entertaining audiences since 1997, with the band having produced five CDs and performing as everything from a duo up to a five-piece. “We’re sort of an amalgamation of our influences, which range from folk to country to blues to straight ahead rock to New Orleans barrel-house

Mornings for Love By MICHELLE HERBISON THERE’S no audience like an Aussie audience, in singer and dancing star Jackie Love’s mind. The internationally-successful Australian told the Independent she was looking forward to choosing slightly different programs for her “straight-forward” Aussie crowds after recent touring in Europe and America. “Aussies really know what they feel. They say what they mean and they mean what they say,” Love mused. “I’ve been working in America a lot and they are very polite and nice. The English are a little more reserved but Aussies are really vocal.” Love said she was planning a mix of songs from a range of genres for Geelong Performing Arts Centre’s Musical Mornings on Wednesday and Thursday. She would draw on her decades of singing, musicals, television, and radio appearances since rising to international fame as a young guest star with Sammy Davis Jnr. Love’s musical theatre credentials include starring in Singing in the Rain opposite Todd McKenney and in Dancing Man with David Atkins. Recording and performing

the music from three CDs featuring the song-writing of Siobhan Cruise has also kept Love busy in recent years. “I specifically choose songs that get people’s hearts and mean something really special,” Love said. “All the music I like to sing means something and tells stories. It’s very satisfying.” Love is certainly well-practised at adapting her program to suit an audience, having learnt songs in 11 languages throughout her time on the road. “I started by singing in Italian and French because I learnt them at school, then as I went to each country I learnt a song that was popular in that country,” she explained. “I’ve found some beautiful songs and it gets a lovely response. Music is a universal language and when you sing a song that has deep meaning - people respond to that.” Love expected a “friendly” and “intimate” atmosphere during the morning concerts than at larger shows. “We’ll have little chats. I’ll talk about my life and the music that’s important to me. “I definitely want everybody to bring their singing voices along so I’m not the only one singing!”

VCAL offer for young parents DIVERSITAT Youth’s Young Parents Program is a re-engagement VCAL (Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning) course for young mums and dads aged 15 to 21 years. The course has been designed to allow young parents to return to education while still providing care for their young children. The program is a full VCAL course, run over the year with regular intake points. The course comprises literacy, numeracy, personal development skills, work-related skills and industry-specific skills strands. Units are made up of VCAL, further education and VET units, totalling at least 10 credits. VCAL is offered at two levels in the Young Parents Program:

Diversitat Youth is encouraging young parents to consider the new program for them. Foundation and Intermediate. Students are expected to attend two days a week. Tuesdays focus on literacy and numeracy and are child-free days.

Mondays focus on project planning, developing life and personal skills and learning parenting techniques and skills, with children welcome to attend. Parents will be fully responsible for their child on this day, with no care provided. Toys, activities and high chairs will be available in a room adjacent to the classroom. Students are expected to study from home each week, which will consist of regular homework tasks and assessments. Classes will cater for up to 10 students, be hands-on and lots of fun. By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN GEELONG hopes to fire its new secret weapon again when it takes on North Melbourne in Saturday’s third round of the AFL preseason at Simmonds Stadium this weekend. Despite the various pronunciations of his surname, Mark Blicavs is on everyone’s lips after his stunning performance against Adelaide last weekend. Cats forward coach James Rahilly confirmed Blicavs was a legitimate contender for selection in round one against arch enemy Hawthorn. But Rahilly also revealed that Geelong had suspected for some time the unlikely talent of the 198cm rookie who turned to football last year after failing to realise his dream of Olympic steeplechase selection. “I remember on his first day

when we trialled him we knew about his running ability but I helped trial him and he could kick and mark the ball at a pretty good level. “I’ve seen (recruiting guru) Stephen Wells happy a few times but he was reasonably happy that day.” Geelong’s four first choice ruckmen, Nathan Vardy, Trent West, Dawson Simpson and Hamish McIntosh, are all out with injury. “Last year we probably struggled to know where Mark fit into our side and where he was going to play,” Rahilly said. “We knew we had this guy with this amazing running ability but (not) where to play him, forward, back or wing. “We did try him pretty early in the ruck and just so be it we had a few injuries and we were probably lucky enough that he’s had

that preparation in the ruck. He’s done a lot of work with (premiership ruckman) Brad Ottens. “The strength of Mark’s running ability will help us. “He’ll help us defend at times and obviously running forward. “I think that, especially oneon-one with other ruckmen, he’ll be hard to beat. “We did trial Josh Walker in the ruck as well last year as our second ruck, so they’ve done a little bit of work – they’re not just thrown in the deep end.” Rahilly said the club hoped to have three of its ruckmen “close” for selection for round one, with “tough decisions” to be made on their level of fitness and match conditioning. With two spots open on the senior list, Blicavs could yet find himself elevated to the top echelon despite having played six games since under-14s.

CONSTANT easterly winds made coastal waters milky over the past week, preventing the salmon coming close to shore. However, all that started to change with Sunday’s light winds. I spun the rocks at Wye River with just a barracouta to show for a couple of hours’ fishing before a move to the Sheoaks produced both salmon and couta in a hot hour of action. Dion Clancy was successful spinning the rocks at Grey River, catching salmon to 2kg and couta over 1m. Salmon of 1kg-plus were caught at 13th Beach just on dark. Paul Piper fished Cinema Point with small strips of squid to catch whiting of 40cms and similar-size snapper. Elsewhere, Noel and Peter Faithfull fished the entrance to Swan Bay for a dozen flathead to 68cm along with a nice bag of garfish. Whiting were inconsistent in the bays, with the best reports from close in to Duck Island, Inner Governor Reef and Bird Rock. Squid were also patchy but Henry

Greg Sharp spun North Shore rocks on Monday evening, landing four pike to almost 1m on a 15g Braid Marauder. Xavier Holt found a mix of salmon and trevally while casting soft plastics

in the lower reaches of the Barwon River. Most were small but he managed one trevally of 1.7kg. Xavier also reported that angler fishing with bait nearby landed a mulloway of around 4kg. In freshwater, Lake Purrumbete produced nice trout, especially for anglers who trolled. Stephen Jacoby landed a brown of 2.85kg on one of the new Daiwa Double Clutch 6cm lures. Neil Mason also caught trout at Purrumete using a Double Clutch lure. Lismore’s Lake Tooliorook continued to reward anglers trolling Tassie Devils close to shore. Gold was again

the most-productive colour, with afternoons returning the best results and, strangely, brighter days better than duller days. Wurdee Boluc Reservoir started to produce some of the best results in some time. The big redfin were again targeted but the trout also made their presence felt. Troy West has spent a number of sessions at the reservoir, catching a dozen trout to 1.7kg, all on lure. Paul Harrison has also been fishing the lake but with vibe-style lures, catching four redfin better than 1.5kg over a few days earlier this week. Derek De Lange fished the Bunyip Hole at Buckley Falls where he caught carp from 2kg to more than 6kg on bread. Derek also caught and released two nice tench. Port MacDonnell should be the hot destination for the long weekend, especially for anyone seeking bluefin tuna action. Fish to 30kg have been taken in good numbers in water of 120m. More fish should be taken close to Portland as Easter approaches. Lures producing consistent captures have been Rapala X Raps, Black Magic SBTs, Zukers and small darkcoloured skirts. GEELONG Cricket Club will approach Saturday’s final day of the regular season hoping for an unlikely outright result. The Cats won the toss last week against Northcote and asked their hosts to bat but a long day ensued as the bowlers had difficulty making inroads on a good batting pitch. Marc Carson, 3/36, Cam Alford, 3/24 and Dom McGlinchey, 3/25, all toiled hard but couldn’t stop Northcote making 235. Geelong saw out two overs without loss but will need to come out ultra-aggressively tomorrow for any chance of an outright result. Geelong Cricket Association begins finals this weekend. In division one, the race for the flag is wide open. South Barwon finished atop the table and will play Leopold at Osborne Park. The Swans will need to bury their demons of the past few years, having won just one of their previous eight finals games. Leopold hasn’t played finals for a few years, so it will come out all guns blazing but won’t have the firepower. East Belmont takes on North Geelong at Stinton Oval for a game of polarised form. The Lions won their previous seven games, while the Magpies lost everything after Christmas. It’s hard to see any turn around big enough for North to cause an upset. Geelong West plays Grovedale at Winter Reserve in a grand final replay. The Rams were in form until last week, while Grovedale has found its own. Grovedale needs to win to stay alive, so it should have enough depth for victory. Division two’s final six is finally settled, with some cracking games scheduled. Murgheboluc plays Thomson at Marshall, with the former favourite to win but the latter boasting genuine match-winners. St Albans Breakwater plays Marshall at Grinter Reserve, with the Saints likely to just get the job done. In the third game, Manifold Heights plays Newcomb & District at Murgheboluc. These two met last game, with the Sharks unlikely to reverse the thrashing they received enough to win. In division three, the usual glut of outright results has this season’s premier hard to pick. Meredith has been the most consistent and will go into its first final against Little River as red-hot favourite. The Redbacks played well after Christmas but Meredith will be too tough. Bell Park takes on Lethbridge in a game that could go either way. Bell Park’s best is capable but Lethbridge is probably more experienced in finals, so it should win. Lastly, Shelford plays Winchelsea. Winch has had a fine season but Shelford has enough good players to win.
