Deakin site targeted DEAKIN University’s waterfront car park site is back in the sights of groups pushing for a convention centre in Geelong. Geelong’s peak tourism, business and lobby groups welcomed the possibility of the facility being closer to central Geelong rather than the previous council’s proposed site near Limeburner’s Point. They were responding to Mayor Keith Fagg’s call in last week’s Independent to review the proposed location. Cr Fagg said he wanted to establish a high-level central activ-

Geelong Otway Tourism’s Roger Grant said industry backed the Deakin site. “A partnership with Deakin is really worth exploring. If Deakin can be put back on the table, by gee, I’d be first in line.” Mr Grant said the revitalisation of Geelong’s central activities area and the proposed convention centre had synergies. “The siting of the convention

centre is fundamental to the Vision II thinking for the city and it has to be considered within that context. “Life has changed a bit since announcing Limeburner’s Point, so it’s a matter of again entering into discussions. “We have got to get it right and it will take time to let those discussions take place. We need to go to the private sector with a commitment from all stakeholders on the site.” Geelong Chamber of Com-

merce executive officer Bernadette Uzelac said the location needed more thought and consultation with business and the community. “Limeburner’s has merits but there are issues with its distance and environmental impacts. The less we tamper with public open space, the better for the future.” Committee for Geelong executive director Peter Dorling said he supported any opportunity to talk to Deakin on the issue.

Developer Lawrence Elms, who proposed a land-and-waterbased development for Limeburner’s Point incorporating the convention centre, said a site review would not significantly affect his plans. “I’m happy to take the plan to the most appropriate site because the basic model, including financing, doesn’t change – it’s just a different location.” Deakin spokesman Andrew Birks said the university’s plans for its waterfront campus car park remain unchanged. Deakin has yet to reveal its plans for the site.

ALP ‘backs’ $8b port plan By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN THE STATE opposition has thrown its weight behind a proposed $8 billion Bay West container port near Avalon. Opposition leader Daniel Andrews announced Labor supported Bay West as the best option to ensure economic growth and jobs, especially for Geelong and western Melbourne. The Independent revealed a fortnight ago a secret Department of Transport study into the bid despite earlier State Government claims Bay West was off the agenda. Mr Andrews called for a “comprehen-

sive and transparent cost benefit analysis” comparing Bay West with the Government’s preferred option at Hastings. “There are many factors that support Bay West as the appropriate site for Melbourne’s second port,” he said. Mr Andrews listed Bay West’s advantages as unlimited potential berth capacity, availability of back-up land, access to a standard gauge national freight link, proximity to import and export warehouses and connections to major arterial roads. A second container port was essential for job creation and economic growth in Victoria, he said.

“Container shipping and port activity makes a vital contribution to the Victorian economy, providing jobs for a number of local industries. “A number of reports have supported a new port between Little River and Point Wilson on the basis of cost as well as for the advantages it has over Hastings, which for example does not link to freight rail. “Ernst and Young estimated the cost of a port at Bay West was approximately half of that required to expand the Port of Hastings and environmental impact assessments have been conducted in recent years regarding sites in the Bay West area, yet the Bail-

lieu Government refuses to consider an alternative to Hastings and instead Victorians’ could end up with a costly and less effective second port. “It is clear that Bay West requires significant further investigation and Mr Baillieu’s failure to canvas this option would be selling Victorians short.” The Independent reported earlier this year that industry supported the Bay West option, along with the Victorian freight and Logistics Council and Property Council of Victoria. $100,000 thief ‘walks’ Police conducted a search warrant on the couple’s residence at Smith St, Winchelsea, and seized stolen items, Sen Const Marshall said. “Eighty items were seized, including a vehicle, numerous power tools and tradesmen’s equipment, musical equipment, surfboards, weapons and other items believed to be stolen goods or the proceeds of crime,” he said. By MICHELLE HERBISON A WOMAN who stole nearly $100,000 worth of goods in a spate of tradesmen’s trailer thefts has escaped a jail sentence. Tenille Stewart, 32, of Holyhead Dve, Torquay, pleaded guilty in Geelong Magistrates Court this week to 19 charges including theft, obtaining property by deception and possessing proceeds of crime and weapons. Police prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Eugene Marshall told the court Stewart stole a series of trailers during April and May with boyfriend Gerard Kerr, 38, now in prison.

Her crimes against tradesmen in his community was “very embarrassing”, he told the court. Magistrate Ann McGarvie sentenced Ms Stewart to a 12-month community corrections order and ordered her to pay $12,324 in compensation. “It is self-evident you went off the rails when you started your relationship with Mr Kerr,” she said. “This is your chance to make a change.”

Smashing jobs but staff search beaten By NOEL MURPHY IT’S NOT hard for David Deicke to find good staff – it’s impossible. The Smash Masters proprietor has advertised for panel beaters, spray painters and assemblers – as apprentices and qualified tradesmen – across the region for months but can’t get any takers. He’s advertised for staff in numerous newspapers and across multiple employment websites. He’s advertised throughout Geelong, the Surf Coast, Werribee and Melton. But all to no avail. “I can’t work it out,’’ Mr Deicke told the Independent. “I have 11 people presently working

here and I’m looking for another 11. “I’m the biggest panel shop in Geelong and I’m paying the best rates in Geelong but I feel like I’m in a little country town.’’ Mr Deicke said his work for RACV was mounting as he tried to find tradesmen for “who want to grow with the company’’ for long-term employment. He believed panel repair staff were at a premium in Geelong. “I get all these people who respond to the advertisements who say they’re currently working at other places. I offer them more than they get but then they go back to their boss and they offer them more to stay.” The auto industry is not the only labour sector feeling the pinch of a tight jobs market in Geelong despite an un-

employment rate in September of 7.1 per cent, the highest in more than five years. The Independent revealed earlier this year that a council survey had found a shortage of almost 600 skilled workers in Geelong. Employers had trouble filling 235 jobs and expected another 347 positions to be unfilled next year. The survey covered 1400 business across five municipalities in the region. GForce recruitment agency chief Robert Birch said demand for panel repair apprentices had not been high recently. The broader building sector was generating more new jobs, he said.

A “SUPER council” could safeguard the natural and economic interests of the Surf Coast and south-west coast, according to a Melbourne sea-change expert. Professor Ray Green, of Melbourne University’s Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning, said a broader approach was needed to protect natural assets underpinning the region’s tourism, economy and lifestyle. “We’ve got to start looking as a wholistic thing, managing the coast with not just one council or two councils, natural areas don’t know those boundaries,’’ he told the Independent. Prof Green, who has worked with Surf Coast Shire planners on development controls in recent years, warned of powerful competing interests threatening landscape values underpinning tourism and lifestyle-driven economies along the coast. Balancing sea-change population growth, resident amenity, economic growth, new renewable energies, climate change and landscape values required rational, integrated planning at a higher level than undertaken at existing councils, he said. South Barwon MP Andrew Katos rejected the concept of a super council but said collaboration between Surf Coast and Colac Otway shires could work to mutual advantage. “Like anything, it’s a balancing act,’’ he said. “As for a super council, I don’t think there’s much argument for bigger councils. Surf Coast does a good job, Colac-Otway is a good council. “If he had a concern maybe they need to collaborate and look to manage these issues in a better way.’’

By NOEL MURPHY PICKETERS at South Geelong’s Little Creatures brewery construction site appear to have retreated following State Government threats to break up their protest. Protesters were little more than a hitand-run presence on Wednesday after Premier Ted Baillieu threatened to intervene following a Supreme Court injunction against the picket. Geelong Trades Hall boss Tim Gooden had earlier warned of stiffer opposition but picketers were conspicuous by their absence in recent days. Tom Moultrie, general manager of TFG Group, providing contractors to the $60 million project, said the picketers’ disappearance was baffling. “They were not there this morning. I

don’t know why to be honest, there’s been no correspondence,” he told the Independent. Claims and counter-claims of thuggery have coloured the dispute. Picketers have described it as a community dispute the Supreme Court injunction directed at participating unions and Mr Gooden. A State Government spokesman refused to be drawn on the prospects of police dispersal of the picket. “As that is an operational matter for Victoria Police, it would not be appropriate for the Government to comment,” he said. “All Victorians are entitled to be able go to work safely and without being threatened or intimidated. “The Victorian Government is very concerned that certain persons appear to

be defying the orders of the Supreme Court and preventing Victorians from peaceably going to work and earning a living for themselves and their families.” The Independent was unable to gain comment from union representatives or Geelong Trades Hall. Mr Moultrie said federal Workplace Relations Minister Bill Shorten had told TFG and Victorian Trades Hall to abide by the court ruling. “We received notification from the Federal Government stating, basically, that it expects all parties to comply with the law, that it doesn’t condone illegal activities or actions preventing people accessing their work,’’ he said. “I received that letter and so did Brian Boyd, convenor of the Victorian Trades Hall Council.’’

Avalon fury over Tulla runway bid By NOEL MURPHY AVALON Airport boss Justin Giddings has lashed out at Tullamarine’s attempt to monopolise air traffic in and out of Melbourne. Melbourne’s plans for a new $500 million third runway failed to stack up economically, Mr Giddings told the Independent. A new rail link to service the expanded Melbourne Airport would cost “billions’’ when a modest $150 million spur line to Avalon would service Geelong and Melbourne admirably and more efficiently, he said. “It seems a bit funny that with all that congestion, all that noise, in Melbourne already that they’re looking at making even more,” Mr Giddings told the Independent. “Melbourne Airport has been a monopoly airport for 30 to 40 years. We’re the first airport in Australia to challenge a monopoly.” Melbourne Airport’s boss told a Geelong meeting in September he would try to stop any international airport at Avalon putting “a wobble’’ in Melbourne’s passenger forecasts. He argued Melbourne’s need for as rail link was greater than Avalon’s. But Mr Giddings said Melbourne needed two international airports and Avalon posed no challenge. “We’re not looking to take over Tullamarine - it’s always going to be the biggest in Melbourne,’’ he said. Avalon was granted international status just weeks ago. The third runway proposal for Melbourne was first raised four years ago.

A WHITTINGTON man has documented footage of would-be thieves abandoning plans to break into a parked car after sensor lights spooked them. The man, who wanted to remain anonymous for fear of retribution, said he had filmed three separate incidents of “youths” trying to break into a car in front of his house. The footage showed groups of two, four and five people approaching the car but walking away quickly when they activated the lights. The man said thieves had yet to gain entry to the vehicle but a neighbour’s car was broken into on one of the same nights.

FEARS Geelong is overdue for a serious earthquake appear to have eased with the release of a new quake hazard hotspot map. Geoscience Australia’s Dr Mark Leonard told the Independent the risk of serious earthquake could be up to one-third less than previously thought in the fault-riddled region. Geelong is peppered with quake-prone sites from faults north, west, east and south of the city, from Lovely Banks to Leopold, Indented Head, Ocean Grove and Torquay. “In the previous map of 1991 the level of activity in Geelong and the strip through to Portland

was a bit higher,’’ Dr Leonard said. “In this map Geelong has probably dropped 25 per cent, a slight reduction, maybe by a third. “When they did the ’91 map they were quite aware of magnitude five-plus quakes off the coast in ’65 and other activities around 4.5, mostly off the coast, but it’s quietened down a bit.’’ Dr Leonard said scientists had only about 10 per cent of the information they needed to gauge quake risks accurately. “With the last map they had only 30 years data, now we have 60 years. If we knew every quake over the last 500 years it would be

Bunny battles By MICHELLE HERBISON FRESHWATER Creek farmers have labelled a Department of Primary Industries rabbit eradication program an “absolute disaster” run by “heavy handed” bureaucrats. Farmer Ann Bullen said she would spend $40,000 to surround her property in rabbit-proof mesh fencing because the “uncoordinated” program failed to curb the infestation. Ms Bullen said Department of Primary Industries refused to help her eradicate rabbits despite her property being less than 20 metres from the problem area along Thompson’s Creek between Pettavel and Anglesea Rds. Farmer Harry Cook said he received a fine after spending 208 hours killing rabbits under “vague instructions” and “impossible tasks”. “I pleaded with the DPI to come and show us what to do -

but the request was denied.” Mr Cook said landowners felt bullied and intimidated at the hands of DPI. Ms Bullen’s neighbour Penny Stephens planned to contest in court a $500 fine she recieved sent after a disagreement with DPI staff at her property a week earlier. “We’ve done our best to comply but rabbits don’t respect boundaries. They (DPI) weren’t supplying me with advice, support or anything.” Ms Stephens said DPI staff argued with State Member for South Barwon Andrew Katos when she invited him to her property inspection for “protection” after they entered her land without her permission. “Surprise, surprise, the fine came a week after my inspection.” Mr Katos said the incident “surprised” him. DPI needed to improve its

“educational role”, he said. “The way they deal with people at times needs to be improved.” A DPI spokesperson said Ms Stephens’ fine was for failing to meet requirements of a direction notice. Four of the 30 properties included in the Thompson’s Creek project had received fines and faced potential court action. Two per cent of more than 1000 properties state-wide received fines. “This small minority jeopardise the efforts of the other 98 per cent of landholders who do the right thing by the law and by the wider community,” the spokesperson said. State Member for Western Victoria Gayle Tierney said “savage cuts” to DPI services were making Victorians question the Government’s ability to control rabbits.

PUBLIC NOTICE CLIFTON SPRINGS BOAT HARBOUR Over recent months the Clifton Springs Boat Harbour entrance has become increasingly shallow due to naturally occurring build up of sediment. Recently vessels have had difficulty accessing the harbour entrance at extremely low tide. Maintenance dredging of the Clifton Springs Boat Harbour has commenced and will continue at certain times over the next three to four weeks. Works over the past week have restored safe access at all tides. Work methods being employed do not require closure of the harbour, however the City may at times need to restrict access to the breakwater. A small equipment compound has been established in the gravel car park. The works are being undertaken from the shore with the use of a long reach excavator from the northern breakwater. The excavated sediment is initially being placed on or adjacent to the breakwater to dry before moving it offsite to remote areas of the coast where it will be used for erosion control. Some odour may be experienced in the immediate vicinity of the drying sediment. All efforts will be made to minimise disruption to residents and harbour users. Federal Member for Corangamite Darren Cheeseman said Greenearth Energy had yet to apply for federal funding to assist its first stage. The Independent reported six months ago that Greenearth would reapply for funding after losing an initial bid when the company failed to raise enough capital of its own. The project seeks to tap hot rocks deep underground to generate electricity. Mr Cheeseman told the Independent Greenearth had yet to apply for grant funding under an Emerging Renewables Pro-

GEELONG pageant star Emilia Ramos has returned from competing in America with new titles. The North Geelong five-year-old won a Talent Supreme category in a California pageant and Supreme Queen in Texas. Mum Kacey Ramos said Emilia competed in the California Gold Coast Beauty pageant only hours after landing in America. “We thought we’d just see how Emilia felt about competing after the long flight, so we hadn’t prepared but she wanted to compete when we got there,” Mrs Ramos said. Emilia won the Californian talent title for completing a flamenco dance routine. She also won a Best Smile Award and an Outfit of Choice trophy for a Michael Jackson Thriller-themed routine. The pageant star won the queen title a week later at the Texas Universal Royalty National pageant, which featured in reality television’s Toddlers and Tiaras. Emilia again won the talent section in Texas as well as the Sweetheart category and Outfit of Choice for a Katy Perry-inspired cupcake creation. Mrs Ramos said pageant boss Annette Hill was “very supportive” of her daughter, joking about her social media alias, The Emilia Ramos. “Every time Emilia came on stage Annette would say ‘Everybody welcome The Emilia Ramos’ and made a big thing about Emilia coming from Australia. “Emilia loved it.” Mrs Ramos said Emilia participated in Halloween festivities, visited Disneyworld and attended a Justin Bieber concert as “holiday time” between pageants. “Emilia’s dying to go back and compete next year after such a positive experience.” Emilia signed autographs for fans at Geelong’s Steampacket Gardens this week.

ARTS NIGHT CELEBRATION Earlier this term Oberon High School celebrated their Arts/Technology Evening, a culmination of more than nine months of work by some very creative senior students. The exhibition demonstrated the vast array of talent in the Art/ Technology areas including paintings, ceramic sculptures, wood furniture, art installations, photography, graphic design and textile garments. The student’s work was attractively displayed in art gallery fashion with the school’s main wing a buzz of activity. Patrons also enjoyed hors d’oeuvres and refreshments prepared by the food technology department. There were many outstanding art pieces, demonstrating the students’ level of thought, preparation and skill in completing the final art work. In each discipline a student received recognition for their commitment and endeavour throughout the year. Congratulations to James Marchetti (Wood Technology) Phoebe Griffin (Textiles), Zac Van Grondelle and Cory Balloch (Studio Arts), Sam Martin (Food Technology), Laura Schofield (Art/Photography) and Daniel Webb (Media) - all worthy recipients of these subject specific awards. A number of year 12 students plan to continue further study next year, exploring opportunities at RMIT for degrees in Visual Arts, Fine Arts and Furniture Design or Deakin University for degrees in creative arts or film and digital media. Art Coordinator Helen Downey commented, “The evening was a wonderful opportunity for these up and coming young artists to celebrate their hard work with family and friends.”

THERE’S a good reason why the word ‘fun’ is included in the name of Winchelsea Fun Kart Club name. The club’s charter makes it clear: “If you are seeking membership for serious racing, then I suggest you are applying to the wrong club”. Secretary Glen Rabbas said the club was strictly family orientated, with fun the key element. “It’s been the main ingredient for the club’s success,” he emphasised. “We’re looking for people with a similar motivation to become part the club. “A win-at-all-costs approach to racing has no part in our club’s agenda. This is not what we’re about.” Glen said the family-friendly club promoted parents and kids spending time together and having fun racing go karts within a safe environment. “The aim is maximum fun for the entire family for minimum outlay while endeavouring to keep all carts on an even keel with no unfair advantages,” Glen said. “Winning is seen as a secondary issue. In fact, one of our rules is that there will be no arguments entered into at the track.” A group of Winchelsea families formed the club about 30 years ago, with members still us-

Glen said the membership covered a broad range of age from six to 70. “We have members from Geelong, Colac, Melbourne and Winchelsea. We have members who are truck drivers, small business owners, pilots, students, builders, mechanics, fitters and many other varied occupations.” The club meets on the first, third and fifth Sunday from February to November, with dates reserved just for fun and practice. Club trophy race days have junior members put into different age classes to ensure racing is fair and fun, while senior members run in weight and gender categories. Glen explained that the club used only one class of engine, a Honda 6.5hp four-stroke, mostly fitted to second-hand bitumen go karts with club-set specifications and safety rules.

“The average cost to buy a kart setup for our club is around $1000 but each driver also needs safety gear such as a full-face helmet, gloves, overalls and boots. “Annual membership is $200 for the whole family, with a gate entry fee of $20 per family for each race day attended. “A number of members have gone on to speedway racing and have become quite successful. “New members are always welcome and, as our emphasis is on having fun, existing members are always happy to help new members fit in and offer help in setting up their karts. “We’re also holding a drive to raise awareness and help increase our membership.” Glen said more information was available at winchelseafunkartclub.com or by phoning him on 0418 522 475.

‘Support’ for Cotton On HQ plan STATE Government support was a “key factor” in fashion retailer Cotton On retaining its global headquarters in Geelong, according to a company executive. Chief financial officer Michael Hardwick said the company was “delighted to have partnered with the Coalition Government to make it happen”. Mr Hardwick revealed the partnership as Cotton On an-

nounced that an expansion of its Geelong headquarters would create 500 new jobs in the city. Premier Ted Baillieu said Cotton On would have 1300 jobs locally and 12,000 worldwide. Cotton on has 1000 retail stores in 11 countries, with 650 in Australia. The Independent revealed earlier this month that the company planned to have 2016 shops by 2016.

Mr Baillieu called Cotton On, which opened in East Geelong 21 years ago, a “great Victorian success story”. The company had become a “household name”, he said. “Having product and store design completed here in Geelong, Cotton On is further endorsement of Victoria’s reputation as a centre for design and fashion excellence”.

Apt memorial I WRITE in reply to Bob Thompson’s letter headlined ‘Memorial defiled’ in last week’s Independent. Mr Thompson unfortunately overlooked some facts relating to Australia’s and Japan’s wartime activities. While he correctly pointed out that during World War Two Japan was our enemy, he equally overlooked the fact that during World War One the Japanese battle cruiser Ibuki and the light cruiser Chikuma served as part of the Australian squadron. The Ibuki also escorted Australian troopships to Egypt in 1914. Therefore, his quote from the encyclopaedia correctly covered our World War One alliance with Japan and confirmed that the Japanese dignitaries were appropriate in laying wreaths. As for German dignitaries laying wreaths, our troops serving today in Afghanistan do so side by side with troops from Germany under the auspices of ISAF. While the atrocities carried out in World War Two are not to be forgotten, the wider understanding of the Australian War Memorial and Remembrance Day is indeed living up to the Australian War Memorial Act, as quoted by Mr Thompson. Site of a rip-off QUESTION: How do you negatively affect both tourism and commerce in Torquay and leave an impression the region has got ahead of itself? Answer: More than double site fees at the foreshore caravan park to $65 a night on cup weekend for facilities below par compared even to Anglesea. The Torquay tourism body and local traders should be outraged at this blatant rip-off and the negative effect it has on trading in the town and longterm perceptions. The interesting question is who will do something about it? Apprentice services to ‘improve’ from July I WRITE in response to John Van Klaveren’s story headlined ‘Shock over training jobs privatisation’, in the November 16 Independent. Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority (VRQA) assumed responsibility for the regulation of apprenticeship and traineeships from October 1. The VRQA is exploring alternative models for the delivery of field service to apprentices. This will involve a public tender. As a community group that has spent many years fighting for a pool on the Surf Coast, we thank the community and the councillors for their help over the election period in gaining interest in this issue. We have a lot of work yet to do and our community continues to be eager to see the pool become a reality. We are excited about working with the new council to make this a priority. The development of council’s strategic plan over the next few months will allow council, in conjunction with the community, to develop a vision of what we all want as well as to help council lead us into an exciting future. Surf Coast Aquatic Leisure Centre Action Group was pleased to see some of the champions of the pool elected to council and looks forward to helping them and the rest of council make this goal a reality. Community consultation and accountability were favoured words during the election process, so we will be excited to see the councillors follow up on their promises.

Furphies papered over RESOURCES Minister Martin Ferguson has released an energy white paper with two fundamental flaws. The big one is clinging to the lie that “accelerating clean energy outcomes” will somehow deliver cheaper electricity prices. This recommendation has nothing to do with cheaper energy outcomes and everything to do with government-mandated feel-good green politics. This nebulous nonsense amounts to lead in the saddle of the Australian economy. Secondly, the mindless homage to green politics again spills over into the nuclear energy debate, preventing any exploration in the white paper of the scope for using nuclear energy as a base-load power source. The combination of ongoing homage to green politics and the inability to tackle rising production costs, especially labour, will inevitably result in further energy price hikes. WELL done to the organisers of Open House Geelong on November 11. We had the pleasure of visiting Osborne House homestead, including its maritime museum and Vietnam veterans exhibition, which was all very interesting and informative. Several visitors from Melbourne were very impressed and commented on the potential for tourism. This is surely an underutilised area of Geelong. Ratepayers of this city obviously contributed to the purchase of this important property and it would be great to see the area developed so that even more locals and visitors could enjoy the history and not just a select few. An Abbotsford Convent-style development would be an ideal model, with perhaps a facility to include wedding and other ceremonies in a picturesque setting. Cafes and art and craft retailers would help to make this a financially viable proposal.

I HOPE that, with the resignation of Peter Dorling as executive director of Committee for Geelong, we won’t see an end to the inquiry relating to the leaking of confidential information to a mayoral candidate. The members of the committee and the wider community of Geelong are owed an explanation as to how this disgusting episode unfolded. Someone has to be made accountable. Choir overcoming the odds BY CHERIE DONNELLAN COMMUNITY spirit has trumped limited vocal training and even English language skills to form Geelong Sings choir, according to conductor Kym Dillon. He said the choir was a “unique group” representing the diversity of Geelong’s community. Dillon spoke to the Independent about the stories of choir members and how working with people from lower socioeconomic groups was a joyful challenge. “We’ve got a member named Felix who’s from China – he learned English through singing in the choir,” Dillon said. “He’s great at singing the notes but it took him a little while to get the words but he got there.” Dillion believed the choir’s focus on fostering friendships rather than advancing vocal ability lifted members’ spirits. “People find they come into the group and they have a lot of support. “They can have a go and sing their best and I can help them find their strengths.” Dillon said the choir’s positive learning environment helped inspire excitement among members when they prepared for on-stage debuts. He joyfully recalled watching his singers perform for the first time and recounted other gigs including singing at Geelong Hospital for Mental Health Week and at Ocean Grove Christmas Carols. “Performing in front of a lot of people is quite a new experience for these people

1. Preheat oven to 180˚c or 160˚c fanforce. 2. Pour orange juice into a large low casserole dish or baking dish. Stir in soy sauce. Place onion and apple at the bottom. 3. Place chicken drumsticks on top. SPrinkle with sweet paprika powder. 4. Add peeled potatoes and carrots. 5. Bake for 1 and 1/4 hours. Turn chicken drumsticks every 1/2 hour. All Victorians need to be aware of the dangers of bushfires and ensure they plan well ahead of time. Planning and preparing for fire is not just for those who live in bushfire-prone areas – it’s also for anyone who plans to travel through or near those areas. For those with homes in or around bush, coastal scrub, grass or paddocks – even if you’re in an urban area – then planning ahead and preparing your property are vital. Suburban homes, even if they are several kilometres away from risk areas, can be vulnerable to fire caused by flying embers. There are many things you can do right now to get ready for the fire season and protect your family. Get a relocation kit ready with important documents and essentials – mobile phones, radios, clothes and water – so you are ready when you make the decision to leave the area before a fire. Talk to your family and others in your life about planning and preparing for the threat of fire. If you have family, friends or neighbours who might need assistance leaving early before a fire, talk to them about how you could help. IndySport Indy Sport 20/20 vision for Cats’ season AFTER going down to Prahran last week, Geelong Cricket Club’s season is on the line tomorrow when it heads to Horsham for a Twenty 20 double header in the premier competition. Chasing a massive target of 368 last Saturday, the Cats weren’t disgraced as they fought hard to reach 242 from 86 overs. James Crosthwaite made his highest score for the club with a determined 67, while Tom Elliott provided support with 48. The loss saw Geelong fall to 11th on the ladder. Tomorrow they play Essendon at 10am before backing up at 2pm against Footscray Edgewater. The Cats have a good record in the shortest form of the game and, with a bit of luck and some attacking cricket, have the chance to get their season back on track.

In Geelong Cricket Association, two sides that missed last season’s finals meet this week in the game of the round when top placed North Geelong plays a resurgent St Joseph’s, which sits in third. The Magpies are in wonderful form and have found a way to win in every game this season despite being behind the eight ball on a number of occasions. Chasing Leopold’s 217 last week, they looked gone at 7/156 but veterans Brad Scown, 47, and Mark Zimmer, 20, saw them home in a thrilling finish. Joeys also put in fine display, falling

just two wickets short of an outright win over Highton. Daniel Fanning had a solid game, taking six wickets to go with his half century, while Trent Walerys claimed four for the match. St Joseph’s top order still looks to be the team’s Achilles heel and will need to fire for Joeys to beat a red-hot North Geelong outfit. Few would have given the Saints much hope of chasing down 250 last

week against the strong St Alban’s Breakwater bowling line-up. But Steve Illingworth had other ideas as he made a magnificent undefeated century, with help from David Boyd, 47, and Drew Bowman, 45, the Saint won with 15 overs to spare. Manifold Heights also enjoying a solid win as they account for Modewarre with ease, falling just two wickets short of an outright win. Ben Knight starred with the bat with an even 100 as well as four wickets, while Craig Booley took six. This match will go down to the wire but St Peter’s form looks slightly better and should just have enough talent to get the points. In division three, Bell Park hosts Bannockburn in a game crucial to the finals chances of both teams. The Dragons sit eighth on the table with 12 points, while the Tigers are 10th, with only North Shore below them. Bell Park enjoyed a fine victory over Inverleigh, chasing down their target of 217 for the loss of only four wickets, with Rob Booley top-scoring at the top of the order with 69. Bannockburn had the bye last game, and will be hoping the freshen-up holds them in good stead, as a loss here would virtually end their premiership aspirations. Ideal conditions provide variety of fish in fresh and saltwater hot spots On the

IDEAL conditions over the past week allowed anglers to target all types of species in fresh and saltwater. The Barwon River in Geelong began cleaning up, with the clearer water sending the redfin on the bite. I had no trouble catching and releasing over a dozen on lure during each of several sessions at Queen’s Park, with Atomic deep shads in the Coke Can colour performing best. Nathan Johnson also cast lures for redfin, with his bag at Breakwater including a beauty of 1.4kg and two others also over 1kg. Anglers fishing above Buckley Falls caught mostly small redfin but a trip to Inverleigh produced both redfin and trout from either the Barwon or Leigh rivers. Deep Lake continued to host few anglers but Rick Maes landed three nice rainbows of around 1.5kg each on Powerbait. Steve Palmer also landed three fish on Powerbait, with one a ripper of 3.1kg. Lake Tooliorook remained one of the best freshwater options, with anglers trolling gold-coloured Tassie Devil lures talking trout to 1.8kg. Counterparts drifting and using vibe-style lures caught reasonable numbers of redfin to better than 1kg. Snapper remained the target species for most saltwater anglers, with great numbers taken from Corio Bay’s inner and outer harbours.

Paul Dean fished from his kayak halfway between North Shore rocks and the channel for two fish just over 3kg each on pilchard baits. Luke Menzies also found snapper off North Shore. Drifting with soft plastics, his catch of six included a fish of 5.1kg, with all caught on Gulp four-inch minnows in the New Penny colouration. Daniel Turner fished Stingaree Bay’s spoil grounds where all was quiet on Monday evening until just on dark when pandemonium struck. Daniel quickly had his bag limit of three big fish, while a boat close nearby enjoyed similar results. Many of the big fish taken in the

outer-harbour fell to baits cast well out into the channel. No one knows why the snapper are holding in the deep water but anglers are warned that anchoring in the channel is not only illegal but extremely dangerous. Mark Farnsworth fishined Wilson Spit for two nice snapper on fresh squid baits. Both were 4.6kg and taken on Monday evening’s high tide. Soft plastics anglers have found snapper close to shore between Bird Rock and the quarries. Pike were a problem at times but persistence was rewarded with fish between 35cm and 50cm. for snapper, finding that they key to success is getting lures down deep. This requires the use of very deep diving lures or with the help of a downrigger. Lures accounting for snapper from the bays have been Sebile minnows and rattlers, Dr Evils, Taildancers and Classic barras. Garry Evans trolled the edge of the channel this week for three fish, his biggest 5.3kg. Last week I reported that Jim Robinson and Kevin Hunter also found success while trolling, with their best snapper also over 5kg. Squid were taken in the past week

along most of the inshore grass beds. The better reports came from the area between Hermsley and Portarlington, with small jigs in natural colours working best. Queenscliff also produced reasonable numbers of squid, with the larger specimens taken on heavier jigs, generally size 3.0 or 3.5. Greg Worth fished inside Swan Bay for a mixed bag of mostly whiting, leatherjacket and salmon. However, the two big flathead over 2kg each really made the day memorable. Offshore, quality snapper and gummy shark were taken in water of 25m to 30m between Torquay and Barwon Heads. Plenty of small couta were also apparent, biting off hooks and sinkers without anglers even knowing. Surf fishing was great this week, with Black Rock producing the best snapper captures. Anglers seeking salmon found that Cinema Point just past Eastern View was ideal on lure. Apollo Bay’s Bob Searle also reported that salmon were still in the area, again with lure providing most of the success. Stuart Leading fished from the rocks in Lorne’s Loutit Bay to find whiting on the bite. Using new artificial Isome whiting worms, Stuart caught 11 fish along with two respectable flathead. This weekends’ tides should be perfect for lure casters seeking pike from North Shore rocks from 6pm to dark.
