NEW ERA OF DINING
MIDDLE RIVER
NICK Hannaford is delighted to announce that The Enchanted Fig Tree dining experience at Middle River is entering a new era.
Gastronomo Dining is handing the torch to executive chef John Stamatakis, who has been a key member of the team for the past three years.
John will be opening the 24/25 season in November 2024 under a new name – “The Fig Tree KI”.
Passionate about Kangaroo Island and its produce, John will bring in a new team with fresh energy and ideas to reimagine the fig tree dining experience.
In response to the current economic situation, John will be reducing the dining price to
make it more accessible without losing its special magic.
This change aims to maximise guests time in the tree enjoying its unique atmosphere and proximity to beautiful Snelling Beach.
The menu will feature local produce as well as foraged ingredients with a Mediterranean bent as John draws on his time helming Italian kitchens Midnight Spaghetti and Madre, his Greek heritage and cult pop up The Greek Secret as well as recent stint at veteran Spanish venue Udaberri.
Nick is very excited about this transition, however as times are tough, especially for the hospitality industry, any support Islanders can offer John this new season would be fantastic.

OLIVES’ 30TH
HAINES
KANGAROO Island Olives began its journey in 1995.
Domenico Esposito planted a single olive tree, near the foreshore in Nepean Bay, Kangaroo Island.
The Esposito family has been growing olives and making extra virgin olive oil ever since.
As 2025 approaches, the Esposito family is preparing to celebrate a significant milestone – 30 years of cultivating exceptional olives on the picturesque Kangaroo Island.
It all began in the mid 90s with a single olive tree planted in the fertile soil of Nepean Bay.
Fuelled by a passion for quality and a deep connection to the land, the Espositos have since transformed their humble beginnings into a thriving agribusiness.
Over the years, their dedication to regenerative farming practices and meticulous attention to quality has earned them a reputation
for producing some of the finest table olives and olive oil in Australia.
The olive groves have recently expanded to include the sought-after Ligurian Olive tree - a prized olive variety producing exceptional oil as well as eating olive.
The Esposito family would like to thank all those involved along the journey and look forward to continuing the tradition.

ENJOY WINE WITH A VIEW
PENNESHAW
EXPERIENCE the essence of Kangaroo Island at Dudley Wines.
Sweeping cliff top views surround you as you sample Dudley’s fine Kangaroo Island wines accompanied by gourmet pizzas and platters.
There’s a nature play area with plenty of space for young ones to run around.
Try your hand at “golf across the gully”, an opportunity to practice your golf skills for the young ones and young at heart!
Dudley Wines is run and owned by Jeff and Val Howard, their three children and their families.
The Howard family’s history on Kangaroo Island dates back more than 140 years.
In the 1960s, Jeff, a fourth generation ‘Islander’, purchased a block, known as Porky Flat, on the south coast of the Peninsula, which he gradually turned into a successful merino sheep and cattle farm.
With the collapse of the wool industry in the early 1990s, Jeff planted vines as an experiment,
and made their first red wine in part of the old shearing shed.
They named it “Shearing Shed Red” and it was purely for their own use.
The following year they made their first commercial vintage wine, and Dudley Wines grew from there.
Dudley Wines’ vineyard is in a beautiful valley at Porky Flat.
The vines are dry-grown and thrive in the rich limestone soils.
The fresh Southern Ocean breezes ensure a slow ripening season, leading to enhanced
fruit concentration.
About 30 per cent of the property is still untouched native bushland and it is the isolated nature, and the pristine surrounds of the vineyard that contribute to the unique characteristics of Dudley Wines.
Jeff’s son Brodie took over the role of winemaker in 2000.
Being the owner/winemaker for over 20 years has given him the freedom to explore many techniques and develop his own winemaking style.
His range of wines are diverse, and carefully crafted

LAVENDER FARM IS TRANQUIL
EMU BAY
EMU Bay Lavender is a farm gate cafe set amongst rows of beautiful lavender.
The business makes and packages an extensive range of lavender products on site and also offers a delicious lunch menu in the cafe.
The humble story of Emu Bay Lavender began in 2001 where a small lavender garden was first planted.
And 19 years later, the farm now runs over 51 acres of land and has an estimate of 7500 lavender plants, including 12 different varieties of Lavandula Angustifolia and Lavandula Intermedia.
The business is owned by a fifth generation Island family which is continually striving to increase the farm’s efficiency and sustainability.
During summer, the lavender flowers are in full bloom and ready for harvesting.
Kangaroo Island’s famous Ligurian bees are busy pollinating the flowers and begin producing the signature lavender honey.
Workers hand harvest and strip about 8000 bunches per year, and distill 10 kilograms of essential oil, used in all of the handmade therapeutic products. It may not sound like much, but it takes about 100 kilograms of flowers to produce just one kilogram of oil.
The cafe is open for breakfast from 9am to 11.30am and lunch is 12pm to 3pm. →emubaylavenderfarm.com. au

EMU RIDGE IS ALIVE
MACGILLIVRAY
LARRY and Bev Turner founded Emu Ridge in 1991 and since then they have not looked back.
In 1991, the Turner family faced a big question: what should traditional sheep farmers do given a downturn of wool prices?
The couple came up with an answer, not realising that it would lead them to become one of the few remaining
commercial eucalyptus oil distilleries in Australia.
“We are extremely proud of our family-owned business and keeping this Aussie industry alive,” Emu Ridge owner Bev Turner said.
Eucalyptus oil was Australia’s first true export overseas, but these days around 90 per cent of the world’s supply comes from countries like China and Brazil.
Today, more than 32 years later, Emu Ridge Eucalyptus Oil Distillery, craft gallery, cafe and cellar door have grown to be one of the most popular tourist attractions on Kangaroo Island.
When visiting the unique attraction, they will show you the past and present processes of eucalyptus oil distilling from a tree endemic to Kangaroo Island, where they produce an essential oil unique to the world.
The business also has a great range of natural products that it has proudly developed, in addition to supporting many other local producers and artisans in the retail store.
Emu Ridge is proudly the cellar door for Kangaroo Island Ciders, where you can taste and buy the award-winning local
apple ciders.
They also have a cafe with three dining areas of your choice to try their delicious breakfast and lunch menu, and the bar has a great range of local beer, wine, spirits and delicious cocktails.
There are guided and selfguided tours, historical relics, barbecue area, public toilets and more.
The shop, cafe and cellar door is open seven days, from 9am-4pm, with extended hours during school holidays and long weekends.

CRACKING FAMILY BUSINESS
HAINES
FRYAR’S Kangaroo Island Free Range Eggs is a family owned-andoperated business situated on Kangaroo Island’s pristine farming land, producing pastured, free range eggs.
Tom and Fiona Fryar established the business in 1992, with just 400 hens on 40 hectares of land.
Today, the couple and their sons, Thomas and Jason and their wives Kirby and Bonnie, run full-beaked true free range hens over their 2000-hectare farm and employ over 25 people.
The hens live in 80 individual custom built mobile sheds on the farm, which are designed so that the hens are never locked in and are continuously free to roam as they please.
The mobile sheds provide roosting rails, nest boxes and shelter for the hens.
The hens’ welfare is of the utmost importance to the Fryar family, which is why they run them at no more than 190 hens per hectare.
The mobile sheds are placed on fresh pasture giving the hens
plenty of space to scratch and peck at seeds, grass and insects.
The hens’ nutrition is also enhanced by a mixture of grains that are grown, harvested and crushed all on the farm.
Kangaroo Island Free Range Eggs have maremma stock guardian dogs that live with the hens.
The dogs love living out with the hens and do a brilliant job guarding them from any predators, such as eagles and feral cats.
Eggs are collected daily and stored in a cool room to ensure they are a product of excellent freshness and quality.
The eggs are then graded and packed on the farm.
Each week, the eggs are sold and transported in refrigerated transport to stores and outlets on Kangaroo Island, Adelaide, regional South Australia, Melbourne, Sydney.
Kangaroo Island Free Range Eggs is a growing business, which the Fryar family recognise would not be where it is today without its wonderful staff members.
The team consists of 25 employees from the people who collect the eggs, tend to the dogs’ and hens’ needs, work in
the egg-processing facility, feed the birds, perform maintenance and farm duties around the farm and look after the egg sales.
Every team member is vital to the business and is the reason KI Free Range Eggs are able to produce such a high-quality product.
The business is externally audited so customers can be assured that the pastured free range hens are true free range.
KI Free Range Eggs is certified by Humane Choice and PROOF (Pasture Raised On Open Fields).
It is also accredited under the Primary Industry and Regions SA Egg Food Safety Scheme and audited by Biosecurity SA against the National Egg Food Safety Standard.
The business has significantly grown over the years and the Fryar family are excited to see where it is heading in future.
The Fryar Family thanked its loyal customers for supporting them over the years, and said they appreciate your business and wouldn’t be where they are today without you.

SUNSET Food and Wine is a modern bistro which overlooks the beautiful American Beach.
It was the first restaurant on Kangaroo Island to be awarded one Chef Hat from the Australian Good Food Guide in 2017.
Sunset Food and Wine reopens mid December 2024.
With access to so many quality local ingredients, chef Jack Ingram works closely with food producers and growers from Kangaroo Island and South Australia, only using what is in season and what is at its very best.
Jack was brought up in Dorset, England – a place of fine food and fantastic produce.
He started working when he was 13 as a kitchen porter.
“My passion for food developed therein as did my desire to grow and mature as a chef. From then I had my training at some of the best Michelin starred restaurants in the UK like Le Champignon
Jack moved to Melbourne in 2010 and worked with Shannon Bennett at the highly acclaimed Vue de monde, finishing up as Chef De Cuisine at Bistro Vue, which is the sister restaurant to the main Vue de monde restaurant.
In 2015 the opportunity came to come to Kangaroo Island and Southern Ocean Lodge as executive chef.
During this time he made many friends and connections with producers and growers within the island and South Australia and fell in love with the passion and quality produced in
this region.
“When the opportunity arose to take over the restaurant, I knew it was a dream come true to be able to cook and showcase what South Australia has to offer and hopefully help put Kangaroo Island on the map as a food and wine destination it deserves to be.”

SPRING INTO NEW VINTAGES
MENZIES
SPRINGS Road Wines was established in 1994, producing small volumes of chardonnay, shiraz, cabernet sauvignon and a cabernet sauvignon/shiraz blend.
It was founded and built by Kangaroo Island legend Roger Williams, of Roger’s Deli fame.
Springs Road Wines has been owned and operated since 2016 by the owners of McLaren Vale’s Battle of Bosworth Wines, Joch Bosworth and Louise HemsleySmith.
Joch and Louis’s expansion into Kangaroo Island came fortuitously after taking their winery crew on a mystery tour of Kangaroo Island at the end of the 2016 vintage.
Joch was shopping for groceries when he saw an advertisement for Springs Road vineyards.
Recognising the potential, the property was bought and the rest is history.
“We built a cellar door off the existing shed and opened up
for business in December 2018, and launched the Springs Road wines at the same time,” Louise said.
Louise loves showing off their wines and educating people about their other wines from McLaren Vale, the beautiful Cygnet River area and Kangaroo Island in general.
She said the Springs Road
label was adapted from French cartographer Louis Freycinet’s 1808 map of southern Australia, ‘Carte Generale de la Terre Napoleon’.
Since taking over the winery at Cygnet River, just outside of Kingscote, the pair have also branched into the “Little Island” range, which includes a shiraz and a dry rose.
The Little Island wine label is inspired by the front cover of a short history of Kangaroo Island, which was published in 1951 by the Kingscote branch of the Country Women’s Association (CWA).
A new wine for 2023 is the Little Island Fizz, a sparkling KI red, and there is also a new 2023 vintage of the Little Island Rose.
Soon to be released for sale is the new vintage ’Terre Napoleon’ - barrel reserve shiraz - 2022.
There are plans for the Springs Road cellar to extend its catering for children over the summer and also operate a book exchange where books can be returned to the Battle of Bosworth winery – the mother ship at Willunga.
Louise said children will be able to enjoy playing in a teepee toy tent.
“Parents can enjoy a tasting and a glass of wine while the young folk entertain themselves out of the sun in a confined area,” Louise said.
Springs Road offers a tasting experience, which includes a full tasting of its wines, plus cheese and crackers.

GREAT CIDER SPIED ON KI
MACGILLIVRAY
GRAHAM and Mary Jones started planting an apple orchard on their Kangaroo Island property in 2004.
Why? To be able to make a top quality cider.
In 2012, the pair saw through their dream and officially set up Kangaroo Island Ciders.
Graham has been teaching cider making and making cider with his students for many years as part of the winemaking programs at the University of Adelaide. Wanting to take his passion for premium quality ciders to the next level, he and Mary planted 30 different cider apple varieties, together with a few dessert apple varieties.
They now have more than 800 trees in their orchards. Among the orchards you can spot old English varieties, such as Yarlington Mill, Somerset Red Streak, Kingston Black and Golden Harvey.
Planting a vast range of varieties means Kangaroo Island Ciders are able to create many different flavours, with bittersweet and bittersharp
apples adding to the complexity of the ciders.
While Graham manages the cider productions, there’s no doubt Kangaroo Island Ciders is a family affair.
The Jones’ son, Gavin, assists in processing and blending, while Mary is involved in maintaining the orchard, organising the apple picking and even designing the labels for the
cider - which are based on the coastal views of Kangaroo Island.
This year we again had the assistance of the KI Dragons, based in American River, to pick the apples.
Unlike last year, however, the birds stayed away from the orchard in the early part of the season allowing to pick some pears for the first time - they are usually demolished by the birds
before the end of December - but returned in their droves in the latter part of the season.
The cider has again turned out to be one of the best we have made – a great vintage.
Kangaroo Island ciders are available at venues around the Island with the cellar door at Emu Ridge Eucalyptus Distillery.

SAFE IN WILD
KANGAROO ISLAND
THE Kangaroo Island Wildlife Network (KIWN) is a not-forprofit organisation whose volunteers deliver ongoing wildlife conservation programs for all species of wildlife.
This includes environmental protection and restoration, as well as emergency response and direct care for rescued, orphaned or injured wildlife.
Vehicle strike is the main reason wildlife goes into care, so the KIWN urges visitors to slow down and watch for wildlife when driving around the island.
In some good news, there are new road wildlife signs reminding drivers to slow down and to call 1300 KIWILD (549 453) when animals are injured. Other new roadside signs remind visitors and residents of the presence of wildlife after dark.
KIWN president Katie Welz said the new signage had resulted in a six-fold increase in calls to the network hotline.
“After many years, the KI Wildlife Network is so excited that our ‘Report Injured Wildlife’ signs have been erected around the Island on Department of Infrastructure and Transport roads to act as a reminder that wildlife is active on our roads,” she said.
“We encourage all motorists to safely pull over when they see injured wildlife and call 1300-KIWILD for assistance.”
The KIWN also provides and helps to plant trees and shrubs to support many species across the Island and the little penguin and glossy black cockatoo were just two of the focus habitat restoration projects for 2023.
The KI Wildlife Carnival is held every second year on the October long weekend at Cygnet River. For more information go to www.kiwildlifenetwork.com
GIFTS FOR ALL M
OTHER and daughter duo, Robyn Field and Kellie Klein, are proud of their range of authentically Australian made gifts and souvenirs.
Their family business, KI and Co. Australia, is their handcrafted products such as earrings, art cards and more, which are stocked around the island and across Australia.
“Through KI and Co. Australia being an Australian made brand, we’re supporting other Australian businesses and local manufacturers,” Kellie said.
“Everything we buy or print locally has a positive flow on effect.
“We also print our earring cards, art cards and gift tags on
100 per cent recycled paper.”
As well as making leather earrings, Kellie manages the business, while Robyn is the resident artist.
Robyn enjoys working with watercolours to paint happy and playful art.
“It’s really important to embrace Australian made and owned, and support local,” Robyn said.
Their popular leather earrings are handmade with leather that is processed and tanned in Australia.
Other products include gift tags, activity and colouring books and art prints, all of which are made on Kangaroo Island or in Australia.
To see the range visit the website or stockists around the island.
THE Penneshaw Progress Association has embraced and developed the inspirational concept of a Sculpture Trail that was first envisioned by a small group of islanders, passionate about the arts, community, and custodianship of the Island’s story.
The trail is positioned on 4.5 hectares of dunes overlooking Hog Bay; the beach at the heart of Penneshaw, the little town where the ferry docks. In fact, it is only a short walk from the ferry terminal, which is the main arrival and departure point for both visitors and locals.
The trail aims to distil and protect the unique story of Kangaroo Island, its natural environment, and its people through the art of sculpture, inspiring deeper connections and enriching the cultural experience.
Both human stories and nature in its various forms have been interpreted with a range of sculptural and landscape elements, comprising natural materials, found or reclaimed objects, or materials sympathetic to the site. The area is also home to a significant population of wildlife and local endemic plant species.
But the journey has only just begun. The trail will be ever evolving as it grows and develops with the addition of sculpture and landscape form over the years to come. Each time you visit it will present a new surprise.
After some years of planning the project came to life with federal grant funding, and the support of the Kangaroo Island Council.
The growth of the trail and installation of new sculptures continues to be attributed to generous donations and patron funding.
The energy of community volunteers has been boundless. Each one is passionate about the environment, their community
and the project. Their commitment has not waned.
From seeking funding and sculpture installations, to maintaining the infrastructure and environment through installing artworks, trimming, weeding, carting tons of limestone rocks, and revegetating the area with more than 1000 trees and other native plants.
The 1.5 kms of the trail, winds through the dunes and features lookouts, steps, boardwalks, a swing bridge, seating and scenic views with a surprise at every turn. The grace and form of ancient Blackthorn trees, the majestic ravine where the swing bridge is installed, and the ghost tree that sits atop a rise are some off the features.
The design of the trail, by local
artist and landscape gardener, Bryon Buick, is a sculpture in itself.
Bryon captured the essence of the site with a sympathetic approach to the extraordinary elements within the area which comprises four main character precincts: sand dunes, a deep ravine formed in a massive flood over 100 years ago, bursia heath and woodland, allowing considerable interpretive scope for sculpture artists in the future.
Local artist/sculptor, Dave Clark, and committed volunteers have transformed the trail with stone walling, hand crafted seats, and impressive entrance signs. He has also embraced the essence of the site with beautiful creations and attention to detail. The natural materials used complement the existing environment.
It has been a labour of love for all those concerned to produce a trail planned to be a leading cultural landmark of the region which captures and preserves the unique and evolving story of Kangaroo Island, and enriches the experience of visitors and locals alike.
Construction began in early 2018 and we officially opened the trail in July 2018. Each season, there are new things to see, new additional sculptures being installed, and always a surprise to be found in nature along the trail.
