Getting to know
Jana Sasikova Owner/Manager of DaVinci Restaurant and Lifestyle Brand
Vivacious Jana Sasikova is an owner/manager of not only the iconic DaVinci Restaurant in Nai Harn, but of a burgeoning lifestyle brand that trades under the same name. We had the pleasure of catching up with her over canapés and wine spritzers. What Background do you bring to becoming involved in DaVinci? Strangely enough I studied Philosophy and History of Art at the University of Karlova IV Praze in the Czech Republic where I grew up which may seem particularly appropriate for managing a brand named after Leonardo DaVinci! But in fact, I come from a restaurant owning family and so in many ways what I am now doing is in my blood. My family owned the Àrst Italian restaurant in the Czech Republic and subsequently when I met my husband Claudio Pivotto, we opened and ran a couple of successful restaurants prior to our coming to Phuket. When I got here I thought I was just going to retire, but I met Mario at Capannina restaurant in Kata and ended up working with him for over three years. Then fate took a hand in my destiny! I had an accident on my scooter right in front of DaVinci restaurant and Mark Norris the manager and partner at that time came to my rescue. He took me into the restaurant to catch my breath and subsequently I became involved in DaVinci. How did you end up becoming the Owner/Manager of DaVinci? Once I got to know Mark Norris and his partner David Roberts we realized that there was a great “Àt” between my own background and experience and their vision for DaVinci. Also I fell in love with the style, food and friendliness of the restaurant. I joined them and soon after I became a partner, taking over the day to day management when Mark left in June 2012 to develop his own career.
www.theguidephuket.com
How is DaVinci the Restaurant becoming DaVinci the Lifestyle Brand? It was always our vision that we should add to this restaurant dedicated to fine cuisine and dining, all sorts of other complementary lifestyle services. We gradually expanded into yacht chartering and luxury villa rentals and management and that side of our business is now growing considerably. Many of our guests in the villas were seeking in-home catering services and so this is another area that we have embraced and we plan to open a separate catering company dedicated to this area in the future. What Future Plans to you have for DaVinci Restaurant Itself? We are opening our second DaVinci restaurant in the Kata Beach area in December 2013 on the road between Kata and Kata Noi Beaches. This will be a smaller version with many of the same decorative icons and will have a menu that is sixty percent the same as the Nai Harn restaurant, with the balance of the food selection reÁecting the ideas of my husband Claudio who is Executive Chef of both restaurants and also our Italian Chef who will oversee our new DaVinci. We are also planning a series of wine dinners and also Medieval themed evenings in which we re-create and present a selection of meals and produce from the historical period from the 13th to 16th Centuries. It will be a unique innovation for Phuket and one of which I think Leonardo would be proud!

Banyan Tree Brunch
It had been another busy week in Phuket…..getting up at 6am to cope with the trafÀc and then going out every evening as the high season parties started to kick in with a vengeance. We decided we needed a Sunday of indulgent relaxation, with great cuisine and a bottle of chilled Rose to bring a touch of healing balm to our frazzled souls. Where better then than the Laguna area’s lovely Banyan Tree Resort and Spa’s Sunday Brunch to kick back for a long, languorous experience stretching well into the afternoon with fabulous cuisine; a terriÀc wine and drinks selection; and live jazz to ensure you really recover from the stresses of the rest of the week in Phuket? As we walked into the huge, airy brunching area, with the lovely verdant Banyan Tree’s grounds dappled with cool lakes and pools outside the huge windows, we immediately felt a sense of relaxing anticipation waft over us. We settled into our window seat overlooking the brightly diamondiferous lake outside and ordered a chilled bottle of sparkling Rose from New Zealand’s Marlborough region. We realized that this was going to be not just another Sunday brunch, but something very special and memorable. After a Àrst sip of wine to toast our good fortune at having chosen this terriÀc venue to re-charge our batteries, we took a walk around the extensive salas Àlled with abundant cooking stations and food displays. The center of the main room at the Banyan Tree’s brunch sets the stage for its highlight of live seafood ranging from Canadian lobster and tiger prawns, to blue crab and red snapper, to crayÀsh and mussels all ready to be cooked for your delectation exactly as you desire. Then there’s the wide range of cooking stations, each manned by a Master Chef ready to do your culinary bidding in cooking any speciÀc dish which you wish. The range of produce and
dishes on display represents something of a gastronomic voyage around the globe and some of the great food cultures of the world and so a well thought-out plan of dining is probably a key adjunct to getting the most out of the extraordinary array of possibilities on offer. Tempting delicacies such as pan-seared foie gras, wok-fried Manila clams and Japanese sushi, sashimi and a salad and cold cuts selection that leave you salivating were all extremely tempting. But it’s important not to go too overboard on all the starters and main courses as a meander through the decadent dessert selection will quickly reveal to you. Featuring pastries, tropical fruits, freshly prepared crêpes, ice creams and Thai desserts it’s another tempting world unto itself. And be sure to leave a little room to savor the generous assortment of French and Italian cheeses to Ànish things off. Banyan Tree’s Sunday Brunch offers a dedicated Kids Club with entertainment for the little ones and prices start at 2,600++ THB per person including free Áow soft drinks and beer. For only 3,200++ THB per person, each couple will enjoy a complimentary bottle of Àne French bubbly. Kids up to 8 dine for free at Banyan Tree and children between the ages of 8-12 receive a 50% discount as well as free Áow soft drinks. Great Seafood and Value at Chalong’s new “In Sea” Restaurant A new restaurant creatively named “In Sea” recently opened in Chalong on Chao Fa West Road close to Chalong Temple and as the astute reader might surmise, seafood is most deÀnitely on the menu. In addition this huge 200-seat restaurant offers a refreshing concept in dining upon the region’s abundant piscine and crustacean denizens in the form of an all-you-can-eat buffet for just 880 baht net per person. Not content with this great value dining, “In Sea” also features an enticingly inexpensive free-Áow drinks option. For an additional 400 baht net per head you can unleash a veritable torrent of free-Áow, beer, wine and soft drinks to slake the most ardent thirst and send you home with a large grin on your face. If you don’t want to push the drinks boat out quite so far, wine, beers and soft drinks are all available by the glass at attractive prices. Great value combined with great food in a fun environment is the seemingly simple, yet often difÀcult to Ànd, concept at “In Sea” and it’s already packing in many happy visitors to its burgeoning buffet tables as we discovered on our early December visit.
You can’t really miss the big signage for “In Sea” as you drive along Chao Fa West and so we easily turned out of the careening trafÀc, slid into the capacious car park and entered the already bustling restaurant. We started the evening at the welcoming bar downing a brace of bracing Chalong Bay Rum cocktails featuring that excellent libation from south

Phuket’s very own all-natural boutique distillery. This had the desired effect of dispelling the psychic horrors of dicing with Phuket’s homeward-bound rush hour and prepared us for a good wander around the bountiful tables loaded with delicious cuisine. This was an edifying and necessary preamble to dining, as there’s a great deal of tempting food on offer and we needed a plan of campaign to sort out our gustatory priorities. There’s freshly rolled sashimi, or fresh clams, mussels, prawns, squid, crab and of course abundant Àsh on offer, plus a myriad of complementary sauces and dips with which to embellish these. There are also a large number of cooked dishes such as beef stew, pastas with various meats or seafood, roast beef, chicken, lamb and braised vegetables, not to mention all sorts of carbohydrates from potatoes to rice and pasta. The seafood is all super-fresh and wild rather than farmed, while the salad bar is multifaceted and fresh. Plan well ahead because there’s also a tempting array of desserts, tiramisu, Opera Cake, Thai Kanom, various ice creams a fruit selection and even a chocolate fountain to bring the extended munching to a glorious close. “In Sea” is a great location for parties, being huge and also offers private rooms in which karaoke can be set up, so that clients can both dine and celebrate ofÀce parties, birthdays and anniversaries etc. “In Sea” is also very family-friendly and a number of happy groups with kiddies were gleefully tucking in when we visited. All in all “In Sea” is a great new addition to south Phuket’s dining scene, so get along there soon and don’t forget to take a hearty appetite with you!

Aroma & Spice The art of aromatherapy can be traced back over 5000 years to the Egyptian, Chinese and Greek civilizations. Oils were extracted from aromatic plants which were used for everything from medicinal purposes to cosmetics and embalming. However, now in Thailand aromatherapy is often associated with massage and body treatments. Essential oils are used to create a soothing and relaxing ambiance and each have healing properties which can be beneÀcial for frazzled holiday makers. Massages which

use essential oils also tend to be of the gentle variety with long, restful strokes which will send you into a blissful stupor. These essential oils cannot be directly applied to the skin because they are too strong, so they need to be diluted by using a carrier oil such as almond and only one to two drops of the essential oil are needed for every tablespoon of carrier oil. Essential oils are not only applied to the skin during massage but can also be absorbed through smell. This is particularly useful during facial aromatherapy massages where inhalation is encouraged through hot and cold compresses. It is important to advise your massage therapist of any health issues or problems you may have before undertaking any treatments.

5 Key Aromatherapy Oils Lemongrass has a refreshing and toning effect with a sweet citrus scent. It combines well with basil, cedarwood and lavender and is used mainly for muscle aches and pains, fatigue, stress and indigestion.
Ylang Ylang is great for high blood pressure, stress and anxiety. It has a heavy, sweet aroma and is most well known for having an aphrodisiac effect and is sometimes used to help sexual dysfunction.
Ginger is a warming essential oil which has a number of uses, but is particularly helpful for colds and flu, sinusitis, poor circulation and constipation. It has a spicy and woody smell.
Sandalwood helps skin conditions such as acne and eczema. It also soothes sore throats and nervous tension as it has warming and relaxing qualities.
Jasmine has a warm, Ă oral scent and is known to soothe headaches and help coughs, laryngitis and catarrh. It is also very good for sensitive or dry skin.

Vara Spa Peacefully but Conveniently located on the west coast of Phuket Island I’ve just discovered a real hidden gem amidst the hustle and bustle of Patong. Only a few minutes walk from the mega shopping complex at Jungceylon nestles a quiet oasis, the Sawaddi Patong Resort, where the beautiful Vara Spa is to be found. Situated just off the main pool area of the resort, which affords lovely views of the surrounding hillsides, you enter a peaceful world of discreet opulence. Soft music and seductive scents greet you and the attentive staff, led by Khun Rosanat (Gay) the Spa Manager and Khun Da the Spa Supervisor, guide you through your chosen session. Lots of treatments are on offer including choices of traditional Thai, Swedish or special sports massages and a wide selection of body scrubs and oils (hot and cold) that make every spa session a truly individual experience. Whether you are suffering the after-effects of the tropical sun, or just the travel weariness of all that shopping and good living, Vara Spa has a perfect solution for all that ails you. All the products used at the spa are derived from nature and celebrate the healing herbs and plants of Thailand. Most of them sound good enough to eat too and it was a delight to explore all the possibilities. I settled upon 2.5 hours of deliciousness, opting for the ‘Thai Essence’ treatment, which is a special offer from the Spa (Thai Baht 1,995) and really great value for money! The delightful spa treatment rooms incorporate an herbal steam room, full bathroom, Jacuzzi and two very comfortable massage tables. Subtle lighting and cool music enhances the ambience and makes the experience both very private and very restful – the perfect atmosphere for couples or lone travelers looking for a calm, spiritual retreat.

Starting with a 15 minute herbal steam bath and a cooling shower we proceeded to a 30 minute body scrub. Sesame, oats and tamarind essence were expertly applied in order to clean and smooth the skin and I could really feel an immediate difference to my skin texture. Another cleansing shower, more big white, Áuffy towels and I was ready for the next process. Traditional Thai massage is now known the world over and the lovely girls at Vara Spa are well trained in this ancient art. Using aromatherapy oils for this one hour treatment they managed to reach and ease those old aches and pains, sooth my troubled brow and leave me weak at the knees and ready for more. My last treatment in this great package was a very expert facial that the Spa calls ‘Queen of Plants Essence’. It was a totally relaxing hour of gentle massage and soothing products, including an icy cold cucumber paste, herbal steaming and numerous mouth-watering lotions that cleansed and nourished my tired skin. A marvelously refreshing experience that left my skin feeling so much smoother and looking so much brighter – an amazing difference. So there I was, two and a half hours later, weak at the knees, relaxed in composure, feeling deÀnitely lighter and brighter and being fed butter cookies and delicious herbal teas by the Spa’s attentive staff. Three New Years for the Price of One!
Making New Year’s resolutions (and then often immediately breaking them) is an age-old tradition all over the world. Here in Phuket, you get not just one, but three clear chances to make and then try to keep your resolutions, as we celebrate three separate New Years! On January 1st of course, we will enter the year 2014 on the Gregorian or Western calendar and in Phuket this is an occasion celebrated with great beachside dinners, lashings of bubbly and bursts of fireworks and illuminated Thai lanterns Àlling the midnight sky. On January 31st 2014, we’ll celebrate Chinese New Year, or Spring Festival, as we enter the Year of the Green Wood Horse…. a creature renowned for its extroversion, who loves crowds, parties and festive gatherings…..an animal who will certainly feel right at home in Phuket. Finally, Thai Buddhist New Year’s Day, or Songkran, will be celebrated from April 13th to 15th giving you another great opportunity not only to make your resolutions, but to get a free shower, as water is thrown about with gay abandon all over Phuket during this holiday. So, with ample opportunity to make resolutions for a new and improved version of yourself, let’s take a look at some of the most popular things people promise they are going to do and how to stick to these promises in Phuket. • Health and Fitness This one is a biggie, as we all want to be seen on Phuket’s beaches looking trim, muscular and sexy. Yet as all New Year’s festivals are celebrated with lashings of great food and drink, this can be a difÀcult challenge. However, Phuket is a great place for exercising and being outdoors, jogging on beaches, swimming, hiking mountain trails, cycling, sailing, playing golf, scuba diving, or taking a yoga class. So, no matter how much wonderful food you eat in Phuket, there is an abundance of ways to turn calories into lean trim muscle.
• Kindness and Consideration to Others These very qualities are of course important central tenets of Buddhism and such considerations are often a part of everyday life in Phuket. Thailand has historically been revered for its consideration towards other people and welcoming of foreigners to its shores. So, this New Year let’s all remind ourselves to be kind to others as a great way of being kind to ourselves. • Smile and the World Smiles with you It’s been proven scientiÀcally that smiling and laughing, even for no particular reason, releases endorphins – those “happy, feel-good chemicals” into your blood stream. So, here’s yet another reason for sharing your gorgeous smile with everyone you meet this New Year. Of course Thailand is known as “The Land of Smiles” for the way in which people express almost everything from humor to embarrassment through a smile. Join the fun in 2013 and get your gnashers whitened at one of Phuket’s many cosmetic dentistry clinics and then get your newly gleaming smile into full time operation! • Enjoy a Glass (or two) of Wine Yes, more great scientiÀc news that a couple of glasses of red wine releases a tide of polyphenols into your blood stream which then mop up free radicals. So, responsible drinking is actually very good for you and as Phuket has a thriving wine culture, there are abundant wine stores, dinners and tastings in which to give your health a boost by imbibing Àne wines. So, your resolutions can actually be very enjoyable and happiness-generating things and with no less than three New Years in Phuket in which to make them, we are blessed indeed.

Peter Stone Peter Stone Jewelry, an American owned Thailand company established in Bangkok in 1987, is defined within a Collection of more than 39 niche jewelry lines from Designer Jewelry to Wildlife Animal collections to our Venus and Mars collection.
Peter Stone was created by a desire to travel and explore the gem mines of the world, and Thailand being the one of the largest gem-cutting centers in the world among it’s other great assets, I began my business of jewelry design and creation here. The initial demand for the jewelry lines came mainly from the places I enjoyed traveling to: mostly seaside resorts such as Key West, Ocean City and Cape Cod in the USA then to coastal Oregon and California a few years later. I traveled on to Australia’s Gold Coast and North Coast as well as Sydney and Perth. I was inspired by everyplace I experienced and thus designed more jewelry for each of these markets. The Peter Stone Jewelry lines continually grew over the years. After feeling I had sufÀciently built the company in these areas I moved on to the UK and Europe, all the while maintaining a home in Thailand. Peter Stone jewelry UK was established in Bridport, England in 2007, where I moved, family and all! The lines were well received there as they continue to be to date. Again I stayed long enough to expand the brand of Peter Stone all the while enjoying the British hospitality and experiencing the UK and Europe through the many jewelry trade shows there. All allowing additional travel experiences to many new and interesting places. Today Peter Stone employs over 90 people at our jewelry manufacturing location in Bangkok. Many of the same staff and employees started back in 1993….. 20 years a team! We support one another in the right ways. Our Team in Bangkok, the hands that make the exquisite Peter Stone Jewelry creations are the people that get the credit for such beautiful designs. With years of dedication to one another we have created a team second to none. We create custom designs just as your own personal jeweler would. We meticulously follow every design process, step by step, involving the client in each process to assure their personal jewelry creation is precisely as their desire. Please visit Peter Stone Jewelry and DiveSilver Jewelry at the Boat Lagoon in Phuket or visit our home ofÀce jewelry manufacturing outlet next to Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok or simply visit anyone of our Branded websites at: www.peterstone.com, www.divesilver.com, www.breezeestone.com, www.magicksymbols.com, or www.justlikesilver.com. www.theguidephuket.com
Peter Stone Jewelry manufactures for several different markets starting from the Export jewelry market then at the wholesale level for stores and catalog houses worldwide and we sell retail direct at such locations as our Phuket Store and Bangkok Airport ofÀce locations and, of course, online. All orders are custom created for a 100% Àll rate so that businesses always get their best selling merchandise when they need it: On time… Every time. We provide the same express service for our retail direct clients whether we are making one design or one thousand! The client gets the same quality of attention to the creation of their Jewelry. Please stop in to our Boat Lagoon location or see us in Bangkok, just 9 minutes from the airport.

There’s an abundance of comfortable resorts and bungalows blending into the scenery along the coastline and being more low-key than, Phuket, it’s a place to take it easy, read a book and get back to nature. Go for long walks on the b beach, take a nature tour and explore the interior, go sightseeing by elephant, trek through the jungle, jun or go rafting along the local rivers with one of the daily Eco-Tours. Andaman
GETTING TO KNOW the Southern Andaman Region of Krabi, Phi Phi and Koh Lanta
as it could actually be classiÀed as a mud Áat, especially during low tide. The main attraction for visitors to Railey Beach is the adrenaline pumping activity of cliff climbing. The limestone cliffs on the huge headland between East of Railey Beach and Phra Nang cave, as well as other nearby islands provide world-class rock climbing facilities against a stunning backdrop of the sea with approximately 700 routes of mid to high difÀcult rating. Pra Nang Beach Connected to Railay by a small path, Phra Nang is on the outermost headland, backed by limestone cliffs soaring above the beach. At the bottom of the cliff lies the Princess Cave or Tham Phra Nang Nok where local Àshermen leave offerings for good fortune. Three hours drive south from Phuket through stunning limestone cliffs and dense forest brings you to the southern playground of the Krabi region of the Andaman overlooking Phang Nga Bay with its many scattered islands, hidden bays and beaches. Throw away your watch and bask in nature’s beauty or snorkel, dive, rock climb, Àsh, kayak, hike, sail, party, spa or wine and dine to your heart’s content – this region has it all. Ao Nang Beach Just 18 km from Krabi Town is beautiful Ao Nang with its 83 scattered islands. Each island is only a short distance from the next and so during low tide you can wade to a neighboring island, many with sandy beaches and crystal clear water and majestic limestone cliffs rising straight from the clear waters of the sea. Ao Nang has several famous beaches including East Rai Le, West Rai Le and Phra Nang cave which stretches to the foot of a prominent limestone range. Noppharat Thara Beach Just 20 km west of Krabi and three miles long, this beach is lined with majestic Casuarina trees and is in fact part of Hat Noppharat Thara-Mu Koh Phi Phi National Marine Park and is the location of the Park headquarters. As with Ao Nang, it’s possible to reach other islands in the bay on foot during low tides. Railay Beach This beach is generally divided into two sections, east and west. West Railey provides visitors with peace and quiet as it is a broad sandy beach with fewer facilities than Ao Nang. East Railey which lies across the peninsula from West Railey is different from other beaches in the area

Klong Muang Beach/Tubkaak Krabi’s latest beach destination, Muang Klong boasts both 5-star and boutique hotels like the Sheraton Krabi Resort, the Nakamanda and the Tubkaak Resort and offers powderwhite sand and safe swimming. The Lanta Island Group About 53 islands are included in this group situated at the southern limit of Krabi Province. Koh Lanta Yai is the largest and is both a traveler’s and up-market vacationer’s paradise and is as yet relatively undeveloped. You can get to Lanta on the regular ferry from Jao Fah Pier in Krabi Town. The prime attractions are its long beaches, clear water, laid back atmosphere and scuda diver’s paradise where most of the nicest beaches and tourist attractions are located. The Phi Phi Islands Known for phenomenal natural beauty, particularly the famous twin bays with their the curving beaches upon which lies the largest town. Phi Phi islands are some of the most beautiful in the world with superb scenery, silvery sand beaches and Emerald green seas with coral reefs and an abundance of marine life. Hardly two hours journey by boat from Ao Nang, the twin islands Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Leh provide excellent accommodation options and are known as major “party islands.” Poda Islands Situated south of Ao Nang, 8 Kilometers offshore, Koh Poda or Poda Group Islands are fringed by clear waters and offer white sandy beaches, as well as, pristine coral reefs. These islands are not affected so much by the monsoon therefore are year-round attractions and an excellent place for Àshing. Poda island with white sand beaches and clear turquoise seawater abounded with schools of colorful Àsh.

HIGHLIGHT ATTRACTIONS.. Emerald Pool Emerald Pool or Sra Morakot in Thai is located at Klong Thom District. This hot spring originates from a warm stream in the lowland forest. The intensity of the pool’s turquoise colored water varies according to the light and time of the day so a good time to visit is at dawn or early morning.
Bird Watching A trip to Krabi can be a very rewarding visit for any bird lovers. With easily accessible mangroves and low lying forests, there are many places to spot rare birds. Two excellent locations are Khao Kanat Nam, close to Krabi Town, and Khao No Chuchi Forest Preserve.
Tiger Cave Temple Tiger Cave Temple or Wat Tham Sua in Thai is located about 3 kilometers from Krabi town. The inside of this cave features tiger prints captured in stone and is in the middle of an abundant forest with gigantic ancient trees. This place is remarkable archaeologically as many artifacts have been found on the premises including tools, pottery and the mold for the Buddha’s footprint.
Partying Phi Phi is known worldwide as “Party Island central” and Koh Lanta is not far behind. Krabi Town is more sedate, but there are plenty of good bars and a live music scene to enjoy.
HIGHLIGHTS & ACTIVITIES... Rock Climbing Apart from marine sports, Krabi is also an ideal place for rock climbing. Lines of sheer limestone cliffs along Tham Phranang and Rai Le Beaches have challenged thousands of climbers from all over the world every year. The levels of difÀculty of the various routes vary, so Whether you’re a professional or just an aspiring adrenalin junkie, the craggy karsts of Krabi offer a huge array of bolted mounts. Diving Both scuba and snorkeling are widely available in warm, coral and Àsh infested waters with full PADI accreditation courses and live-aboard adventures. Sightseeing by Canoe or Kayak Many companies offer sea canoeing and kayaking adventures around Phang Nga Bay and into the many coves, caves and islets dotting the otherworldly shores around Krabi, Phi Phi and Koh Lanta. Fishing Abundant sea and even freshwater Àshing is available all over this region, from squid boating, to line Àshing in Phang Nga Bay, to big game adventures off the Continental Shelf drop-off. Don’t let that big one get away!
Shopping Outlet Village Krabi is located on Phetchakasem Road. It is on the way from the city to the local airport and features a tall lighthouse near the entrance and 6,000 sqm of retail space. Throughout the year, many Thai and foreign travelers visit this outlet which offers over 100 selected leading brands for all ages. Clothing discounted up to 70% is available here. It is open daily from 11:00 a.m. - 9.00 p.m. Enjoying the Local Seafood Have a seafood feast and savor the fresh day’s catch in any number of a fun, laidback, or Àne-dining restaurants all over this region.
GETTING THERE By road from Phuket Take a minibus or frequent local bus from Phuket Town’s bus terminal with information regarding timetables, taxi or mini-van shuttle services readily available at hotels, travel agent or Phuket Airport. Renting a car is also a good option and the roads are wide, modern and relatively quiet. To Krabi and Phi Phi by boat It is possible to charter a speedboat or similar transportation to Krabi or Koh Phi Phi, or there are frequent daily ferries operating between Phuket and Phi Phi Island and then on to Krabi, or via the Koh Yao Islands, each taking about two hours.
