BGM Bears 25-3 after 2014 season Finish season as Class 1A Substate 3 champs; state quarter finalists By DANN HAYES dhayes1@dmreg.com

I

n the past, the road may have been a little rocky – fans hoping to see the BGM Bears make the playoffs in baseball. Not anymore. The 25-3 Bears finished the 2014 baseball season as the No. 7 team in Class 1A, were the Class 1A Substate 3 champions and reached the quarterfinals of the Class 1A State Baseball Tournament at Principal Park in Des Moines. “I’m really proud of the kids,” said BGM Head Coach Jerod Burns. “They deserve this.” Some team stats that might have snuck past everyone for the season include • BGM’s pitching staff was third best in the state – in all classes – with an earned run average of 0.96 • The team led the state in stolen bases – 194. Individually? What do you expect – Jack Kline had 50 stolen bases (second best in all classes) and Mayson Sherwood was right behind with 40 (sixth best in all classes). And Zac Freese, at 14-0, led the state as a pitcher. But the best comes from what the players did themselves. Here’s the rest of the story.

BGM 11, Belle Plaine 0 Six doubles by the Bears helped them building a 4-0 lead in the third inning, then score another seven runs down the stretch to stop Belle Plaine in the BGM season opener. Tanner Jansen had two doubles while Zac Freese added a homer for the Bears. Freese started on the mound for BGM and fanned seven batters while allowing three hits. Kyle Gritsch came in as relief and struck out two and allowing one hit. The Bears had 12 stolen bases on the night.

BGM 11, Lynnville-Sully 0 A home run and four RBI by Tanner Jansen sparked the Bears to a big 11-0 shutout of Lynnville-Sully. With Jack Kline on the mound for BGM –he recorded seven strikeouts and allowed only one hit – the Bears took a 3-0 lead

into the fourth inning when things exploded. By the end of the inning that had another seven runs for a 10-0 lead. Both Mayson Sherwood and Jansen recorded doubles, while Kyle Gritsch scored three runs.

BGM 7, Montezuma 6 It was about the closest thing to a street brawl on a baseball field as you will see as the BGM Bears were able to hang in for a 7-6 victory over Montezuma at the annual battling cancer game. It was evident early that the last team standing would come away with a hard-fought victory. And when BGM's Mayson Sherwood made a diving catch to end the game in the seventh inning, both teams knew it could have gone

either way. Zac Freese came away with a win for BGM, allowing six hits and striking out 10, while Joe Peck, who came into the game after the Bears had taken an early 3-0 lead, struck out four and allowed six hits during the loss. The Bears opened the scoring in the second inning, taking advantage of some errant play by the Braves as opening pitcher Jake Hasley walked six batters, including three runs with the bases loaded and with two outs. Montezuma returned the favor in the next inning when they loaded the bases with no out and took advantage of some errant play on BGM's part, coupled with some solid sacrifice hits to take a 5-3 lead. B G M added one in the third to close the gap to 5-4, then added two more in the fourth and one in the sixth for a 7-5 lead. That set up the fireworks in the final inning. A line-drive single to center by Jake Hasley was followed by a bop single to center field by Brayden Hudnut. With two on base and two outs, Montezuma's Matt Baker hits a short pop up to center field and BGM's Sherwood makes the diving catch that saved the game for the Bears. BGM's Tanner Jansen was 2-of-4 at the plate with one RBI while Kaiden Fiebelkorn went 2-of-3 with a double and an RBI. Montezuma's Dillon Wilhelm was 2-of-3 with two doubles and an RBI. Brenton Simpson was 1-of-2 with two RBI.

Kaiden Fiebelkorn and Jake Tibbetts – all recorded doubles in the game. In what was a tough pitcher's dual, Jack Kline captured the win allowing just three hits and striking out 10.

BGM 3, Iowa Valley 2 BGM's Zac Freese toss seven K's and held Iowa Valley to four hits in what turned into a pitcher's dual as the Bears won 3-2 at home on Friday, June 13. The big inning for the Bears was the fifth when they scored a couple to take a 3-1 lead and were able to hang on for the win. Still, you could tell both pitchers were getting into the game, early, as the Tigers went three up and three down. The Bears connected for a single in the first inning when Mayson Sherwood got on and then stole second. But they couldn't get him home, which started the process again. BGM got on the board

But Iowa Valley returned the favor in the next inning when Austin Schlabach scored on a bad throw to third. Freese got out the inning striking out the next two batters. Class 1A Quarterfinals State Baseball Tournament Mason City 7, BGM 1 The BGM Bears got one monkey off their backs to reach the Class 1A state baseball tournament, but following a 7-1 loss to top seeded Newman Catholic, Mason City, they may have found another one. Mason City ultimately placed second in Class 1A, falling to undefeated Twin Cedars 8-2 in the finals. The Bears went into the tournament at Principal Park, Des Moines, as the No. 8 seed with a 25-2 record and ranked No. 7 in the state. "I'm really proud of the way the kids played. I thought they played really hard," said Jerod Burns, head coach for the BGM Bears. "Hopefully it gets the monkey off our backs." BGM opened when Jack Kline connected for a single up center, but Mayson Sherwood hit into a double play that left BGM scoreless. Then it was the Knight's turn at bat. With BGM ace Zach Freese on the mound, Mason City was able to load the bases in the first inning without getting a hit. "The first time being here, they probably came out a little nervous," said Mason City Head Coach Tony Adams. "[Freese] struggled a little bit with his zone. We have kids who have been into [the state tournament] before and they know that once you get here, it's just a game." Freese had trouble finding his nitch and a sacrifice fly scored the first run while a two-run single by Brennan Dondlinger gave the Knights a 3-0 lead. Freese settled down and began pitching his game. "It took him a while to get settled in, but once he got settled, he pitched great," Burns said. "He sprayed five hits over six innings against the number one team in the state. "I'm impressed with the way he threw," he said. "He kept them off balance. They are a great baseball team – that's why they are the No. 1 seed and defending state champs." BGM got on the board in the fourth when Tan-

ner Jansen blasted a double that scored Mayson Sherwood. Sherwood had singled to open the fourth and reached second on a passed ball at first. But BGM errors – they had five during the game – and another walk gave the Knights another run and a 4-1 lead. The sixth inning proved to be the end when three errors led to another three runs for the Knights. C.R.
