WELCOME TO MARENGO W

elcome to Marengo, the county seat of Iowa County. Located along the scenic Iowa River, the city is along the route of Highway 6 in the north-central portion of the county. It was founded in 1845 as the “seat of justice for Iowa County” by three commissioners appointed by the territorial legislature. One of the commissioners, according to the “History of Iowa County,” christened the name from a river valley near Allesandria, Italy, where Napolean Bonaparte drove off an army of Austrian soldiers in 1803. Due in large part to Marengo’s location to the resources of the Iowa River, the town became the commercial center of Iowa County. The same river that provided the abundance of opportunity in the early days also caused numerous floods over the course of the

last 150 years. Several attempts were made to reduce the damage associated with the flooding of the Iowa River and Bear Creek. Around 1900, a new channel of the Iowa River was cut in an attempt to minimize flooding. The “Old River Bed” near Lions Park is all that is left of the former path of the Iowa River. Flooding throughout the 20th century prompted a series of efforts to provide protection to the rapidly growing community. Levees were constructed in the 1930s, 1950s and late 1970s. The present levee, administered by the Drainage Districts 10 and 12, was completed in 1979 and protects the city

from Bear Creek and the Iowa River. The pumping station located at the far east end of South Street is capable of pumping up to 60,000 gallons of water per minute into the Iowa River. On July 19, 1993, the Iowa River crested at 20.27 feet, above the 14-foot flood stage, and the levees held. The river reached 21.38 feet on June 12, 2008, its highest crest ever, and then 20.36 feet on May 31, 2013. Both times, the levee held strong. In the 2010 U.S. Census, Marengo registered a population count of 2,528 residents. Several new housing developments were completed in the north, southwest and southeast quadrants of the city, opening new opportunities to expand the community. On the south side of the community, the city’s industrial park has flourished. Continued on page 6

estled in the heart of the Iowa River Valley, Marengo is just 30 miles southwest of Cedar Rapids, 30 miles west of Iowa City, and 7 miles north of Exit 216 on Interstate 80. Marengo is proud of its “small town” atmosphere. There are a wide variety of shopping, dining and recreational activities, including some of the best hunting and fishing in the state of Iowa. The City of Marengo operates under a mayor-council form of government. The mayor and five-member council are elected at-large and are non-partisan. The mayor is the presiding officer of the council. The mayor is not a member of the council and may not vote as a member. However, Marengo’s mayor does retain the authority to veto any ordinance, amendment or resolution passed by the city council. In the absence of the mayor, the council meeting is conducted by the mayor pro-tem. The first council meeting of the incorporated City of Marengo was held Nov. 26, 1859. Present were: Mayor E. C. Hendershot, H. M. Martin, E. L. Ogle, D. Sturdevant and Recorder Robert McKee. At that meeting McKee was “authorized and instructed to procure at the expense of said town, a book suitable for a record of by-laws and ordinances, also a book in which to keep a record of the proceedings of the

council, four quire of cap paper and six pounds of candles.” Council meetings are now held the second and fourth Mondays of each month beginning at 6 p.m. Learn more about the City of Marengo at the Web site www.marengoiowa.com. Every summer, the city celebrates the Third of July with a fireworks spectacular, a street dance and games and activities for children. • Gateway Park and Preserve, located at the north end of Court Avenue, occupies a portion of the southern bank of the Iowa River. The 131-acre site includes a 41-acre lake and a 12-acre pond, which were created through the excavation of sand and gravel for a concrete business. The Iowa County Conservation Board purchased the property in 2001; it is jointly maintained by both the city and the county. The park is open for fishing and boating activity with easy access to the

Iowa River. The park and preserve are also home to a pair of American bald eagles. An arboretum is in the development process, thanks to the many donations and volunteers. Iowa Valley School District The Iowa Valley School District is always very active, with numerous activties, classes and much more to become involved in.

T

he Iowa Valley Community School District is a comprehensive K-12 school district serving Marengo and the surrounding rural areas of northern Iowa County. The district formed in 1958, the result of the merger of former one-room school districts serving Marengo, Cono, Washington and portions of Sumner, Honey Creek and Hilton townships, as well as the former Marengo Independent School District. Junior and senior high students continued to – as they had previously – attend the Carson High School building on East Hilton Street. The junior-senior high building was built in 1926, while the elementary school building opened in 1961. Both buildings have had many additions in the years since. Today, Iowa Valley offers a complete curriculum to prepare students for post-secondary education, including fields of health, teaching, agriculture, social sciences and much more. Sports teams are known as the Tigers, and compete in the primarily Class 1A South Iowa Cedar Confernece. Through the years, the Tigers have had many successes, particularly in football, wrestling and track. Superintendent Alan Jensen has served the district since 2008. Principals

Iowa County History on display at the ...

PIONEER HERITAGE MUSEUM By MARILYN RODGERS Secretary, Iowa County Historical Society

D

uring your summer, plan to come visit the Iowa County Pioneer Heritage Museum, described by many as the “best-kept secret in eastern Iowa.” Yet, we do not wish to remain a secret. There is much to see and lots to share with your children, grandchildren, nieces or nephews, and cousins here at the Pioneer Heritage Museum. The Iowa County Historical Society was organized in November of 1963. This group gathered information and materials pertaining to Iowa County history for the express purpose of preserving and exhibiting the county’s history which then could educate present and future generations. The Iowa County Pioneer Heritage Museum, 675 E. South St., Marengo, Shortly after its organization, the Historical Society assumed the features the Bees’ Gas Station from Hartwick. preservation of the Gritter aCreek Country School located west of North English. This school building remains at its original location and is the only brick one-room schoolhouse remaining in Iowa County today. It is maintained by the Historical Society and is open to the public. In 1964 the Historical Society acquired the Henry Meyer Bachelor Cabin and Log House located near Homestead. These buildings were moved onto a rented lot near the square in Marengo. In 1984 the society was able to purchase a lot and Quonset building along East South Street in Marengo, which was being vacated by the Iowa County Fair Board. Subsequently, the Bachelor Cabin and Log House were moved to these grounds and in about 1990 the Victor Depot was reassembled on the grounds to create the Pioneer Heritage Museum. An addition was placed on the south end of the Quonset building and this entire building then Dr. Susan Davis Dr. Patrick Fleming became the Heritage Center. Around 1992, the Bees’ Gas Station from Hartwick was accepted and moved to the grounds. A grant was received to help create and develop the resource library for the preservation of paper documents related to people, schools, churches, cemeteries and communities of Iowa County. This library, as well as the museum at 675 East South St., is open to the public each summer and by appointment at any time of the year. Effective June 8, the facility will be open each Thursday, Friday and Robin Russ Marie Pohlman Julie Alexander Saturday afternoon from 1 to 4 p.m. through Sept. 15. Call the museum at (319) 642-7018 if an appointment is needed. The museum is maintained through memberships, door donations and generous gifts from many Drs. Susan Davis & through the years. The museum is staffed entirely by volunteers. Come spend an afternoon with us. We are always happy to receive any Patrick Fleming family treasure that relates to Iowa County which you are willing to let 642-3311 us copy or preserve for the years to come.

Marengo Publishing Corporation, which publishes the Marengo Pioneer-Republican, is located at 100 W. Main St. The Marengo PioneerRepublican has been in print since 1856, one of the oldest newspapers in the state of Iowa.

Covering Iowa County for 157 years ... still going strong

MARENGO PUBLISHING CORP. T

he Marengo Pioneer-Republican celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2006. Throughout the years there have been many changes in management and fewer changes in name, but the purpose of the newspaper has remained the same, to serve the information, communication and entertainment needs of the people of Iowa County. The P-R’s progenitor, the Iowa Weekly Visitor, made its debut Sept. 6, 1856, with Clinton Edwards as the publisher and editor. Edwards’ venture at the time was considered precarious, for the population of Marengo was less than 300 and the people generally poor. Money was scarce and almost any usable commodity was taken in payment for subscription. The newspaper became the Marengo Republican in 1871 under the guidance of editors Spering and Crenshaw, who were both staunch supporters of President Lincoln. In 1923, Fred Cook purchased the competing newspaper, The Marengo Democrat, and changed the name to The Marengo Pioneer. Then in 1927, Mortimer Goodwin and K. R. Marvin purchased both the Marengo Republican and the Marengo Pioneer, and since then, the community newspaper has been called the Marengo Pioneer-Republican. Ownership was passed on to Glenn A. Ellis and Harold V. Ellis in April 1930. The Ellises stayed with The Pioneer-Republican for over 30 years. Marengo Publishing Corporation (MPC) was founded in 1963 by Leland M. Turnbull, his son, James Turnbull, and long-time Pioneer-Republican editor James A. Mayer with the purchase of The Pioneer-Republican and The Blairstown Press from the Ellises. Jim Turnbull became the acting president of MPC until his death in 1979. In March 1979 Sheryl Turnbull (now Sandersfeld) was elected president of Marengo Publishing Corporation. Michael Simmons was named executive vice president and chief operations manager and became publisher for The NEWSpapers of Iowa County. Elected secretary was Don Magdefrau, Belle Plaine, and C. Edward Koch, Williamsburg, was treasurer and business manager. The North English Record was added to NEWSpapers of Iowa County in 1979. Marengo Publishing Corporation office, previously at 1021 Court Avenue, has been in its present location at 100 W. Main St. since 1983. Simmons, Magdefrau and G. Alan Sieve, editor in chief of The NEWSpapers of Iowa County from 1992- 2000, purchased controlling interest in MPC in 1987. The group added another partner, Dan DeBettignies, in 1990 with the purchase of The Montezuma Republican. The Brooklyn Free Press was purchased in 1993

and the Brooklyn Chronicle in 1996. The Grinnell Pennysaver was purchased in 1997. The 4-County Market, Victor, was purchased in 1988 and The Iowa County Advertiser, Williamsburg, was purchased in 1989. In 2000 the group sold all of the publications to The Des Moines Register and Tribune Company, a division of Gannett Company Inc. Today, MPC remains in business after serving the community of Marengo for over 150 years, the oldest operating business in Iowa County. MPC publishes The Marengo Pioneer-Republican, The Williamsburg Journal Tribune, The Star Press Union, The Poweshiek County Chronicle-Republican, The Iowa County Advertiser, The 4-County Market and the Grinnell Pennysaver. In the 2000s decade, Marengo Publishing Corp. began an online presence, and may be found at www.yourweeklypaper.com. With the growth of social media, the newspapers also have presences on Facebook and Twitter. We are proud of our heritage and long-standing tradition of covering news in Iowa County, and we plan to continue our relationship with you, the readers, for many years to come. To learn more about our newspapers, to submit a news release or story idea or to subscribe, contact Marengo Publishing Corp. at (319) 642-5506 or e-mail publish@netins.net.

IOWA COUNTY FAIR

The Iowa County Fairgrounds are located on the east side of Marengo at 800 East Marion St. The Iowa County Fair is held every year in Marengo. The 2014 fair will be held July 16-20. The fair features several exhibits and events. Most notably, the Iowa County 4-H youth will display a year of hard work by showing animals, projects and much more. Also at the fair, Miss Iowa County is crowned, as are Little Miss and Mr. Iowa County. The Bill Riley Talent Show showcases talented youth from throughout the area, as does the Share-the-Fun contest. The Iowa County Fair is fun for the whole family with the kiddie tractor pull, the watermelon feed and the ag olympics. The facilities at the Iowa County Fairgrounds include Zentmire Hall, which has a large meeting space, a back meeting room and a kitchen that is available to rent for special occasions like graduations, wedding receptions and parties. Camping is also available on the fairgrounds with electrical and water hook ups. Other events are scheduled at the Iowa County Fairgrounds throughout the year, starting with the spring Craft Show. The Iowa County Tractor also is a popular attraction, as is the Holiday Open House. Dates for those events have yet to be announced. In January 2012, the Iowa County Fair Board began a capital campaign to replace the cattle and livestock barns at the fairgrounds. A large portion of the funds was raised last year during the fair, with Kinze Manufacturing and Sigourney Tractor donating $100,000 and $50,000, respectively. The building will include a livestock holding area, offices, show ring and much more. Cost estimates have ranged

from $500,000 to $600,000. The building will replace livestock holding pens that have been used since 1951, the year the fairgrounds moved to its current site. GATEWAY PARK G

ateway Park and Preserve, located at the north end of Court Avenue in Marengo on the southern bank of the Iowa River, was created from 131 acres of land purchased from Frank and Charleen Disterhoft and Marengo Ready Mix. The project site includes a 41-acre lake and a 12-acre pond for fishing created through the excavation of sand and gravel used for a concrete business. There is a network of walking and biking trails, which encompass the lake and pond. Gateway Park Arboretum is nestled on the southern edge of the park within 7.5 acres. It includes a memory garden plus other gardens and the veterans’ memorial with the inscription: “In honor of those who served proudly — lest we forget.” In 2004 volunteers constructed the first 1.5 miles of a 3.6-mile walk/bike trail funded by a $65,000 trails grant from the National Park Service and the Blaine Fund. In 2009, R.A.I.V. Committee and other volunteers finished the western stretch of trail from the previous end to 212 Boulevard, a distance of 2.1 miles. The trail runs along the top of the levee.

Gateway Park and Preserve located at the city’s northern end. The park is currently open for fishing activity and contains a boat ramp for access to the Iowa River. The arboretum continues to develop, thanks to many donations and volunteers. Biking and hiking trails are located along the river’s levee. Future plans for the park include bioswales, a children’s water garden, wetlands preservation and restoration, education gardens, a lakeside pavillion, a memorial pavillion, a wedding pavillion, picnic area and a welcome center.

Gateway Park is a great place to walk or bike and to enjoy nature without having to get too far out of town.

Dr. Cooper is an expert orthopedic surgeon compared to my first total hip arthroplasty in 2000. I have had very minimal post-op pain and an expedited recover rate to date.
