Carter family sells, trains foals
STARBUCK – Quarter horse broodmares, along with their foals, line up along the fence for the one-day 59th annual horse production sale held at Carter Acres ranch in Starbuck Aug. 11. The production sale gives interested buyers an opportunity to look through the stock of foals and examine conformation, disposition and structural correctness off each one before buying. The ranch, operated by Nada and Dale Carter, specializes in training and selling quarter horse foals for clientele throughout the United States. The foals sold are used in a variety of disciplines, such as ranch work, trail riding, shows and competition. “My father started the quarter horse production sale in 1959 and my family and I, including my brother, Logan, and his family, continued the tradition,” Nada said. “Our annual sale brings together our family and friends for a week of fellowship. It also gives us the opportunity to network with other horse owners.”
The Carters and their children – Quincy, 25, Levi, 23, Brady, 20, Kyerra, 17, and Zach, 14 – each find purpose in the family business. “We are a family-owned operation with everyone pitching in to make things work,” Nada said. Dale’s main duties are in the nutrition, health and care of the horses, where Nada’s focus is on training, registration and paper transfer work. Their five children assist, or have assisted, with the daily chores of feeding, bedding, watering and grooming the horses. Both Dale and Nada work to find the best breeding pairs. To determine the best anatomical crossing and a mare’s full productivity, Nada places photos of foals that are offspring of a mare under a photo of the mare. “We are working to continually improve the

Perfect poultry pastime Arvig four-time state chicken champ By CAROL MOORMAN Staff Writer GREY EAGLE – Ask Myra Arvig a question about chickens and chances are, she will know the answer. That knowledge has led this 15-yearold daughter of Sara and Scott Arvig to become a four-time state 4-H champion, earning this honor again this year at the Minnesota State Fair. Arvig, an Upsala High School sophomore, is the oldest sister to Silas, 13, Claire, 12, Lynn, 9, and Scott, Jr., 14 months. The family lives in rural Grey Eagle. Arvig was about one year old and living in Fargo, N.D. with her parents when the family got their first chicken. “It was a chick that, apparently, one of my mom’s friends found outside of a science room when she was in college,” said Arvig. “Who knows how it got there, but we kept it in our basement.” They named the chick Cheep Cheep, eventually giving it to Arvig’s grandparents, Steve and Cheryl Wiechman of St. Rosa, when they moved but they kept chickens for eggs. Even as a child, Arvig liked chickens, but the thought of showing them never crossed her mind. In fact, when she was
6, all she wanted was her own horse, but her parents were not too keen on that idea, so her mom came up with an alternative. “She asked me if I wanted to show chickens. I thought, ‘sure, why not,’” said Arvig. “With my mom’s help, I picked out what breed I wanted (Cochin bantams) and tried my hand at raising them.” After one year, Arvig was hooked and now she has been showing chickens for eight years. “But, I am not the only one in my family that likes this,” she said. “Claire shows chickens, ducks and pigeons with me and Lynn shows ducks. Silas is content with leasing a dairy cow every year from our grandpa.” Poultry pastime Arvig figures they have around 50 chickens, 40 pigeons, 11 turkeys, 15 ducks and six doves on their hobby farm. Raising poultry involves daily chores, which, depending on the time of the year, can take a little or a lot of time. “In the spring, when we get our chicks, there’s chaos because we have to set up brooders, set up feeders, water dishes and heat bulbs for the new chicks,” said Arvig. There is a reason Arvig does not mind the work. “The chicks are so adorable and small when they first come, but they grow fast,” she said. Chores involve giving the chickens food and water, sweeping aisles and bedding pens. “We try to clean out our pens every

couple of weeks in the summer,” she said. Occasionally, birds need to have their nails or beaks trimmed or need to be treated for lice. “In the winter, chores are pretty easy because we sell or eat all of our extra birds, so we are down to a small winter flock,” said Arvig. There are many things Arvig likes about working with chickens.
“First of all, if you work with them every day, they get really tame and will follow you around the yard,” Arvig said. “It’s also cool to see them go from an egg, to a chick, to a full grown chicken. Then there is the aspect that it’s something my sisters and I do together, and I have gotten

Although a friendly disposition and sound conformation of the horse are the most important characteristics, color is a big selling factor. Blue roan and red roan are the most popular colors and many buyers prefer stud colts (male). Blue and red roan colors are characterized by interspersed white hairs mixed with either blueish-gray hairs (blue roan) or red hairs (red roan).
Spring and summertime are the busiest for the family, with breeding and foaling, as well as handling and selling foals happening during this time. In the fall and winter, Nada spends time brushing up on her horse training skills and both she and Dale go to shows and sales to network. At that time, they also create a preliminary list of breed pairings. Horses have an 11-month gestation; therefore, the Carters strive to produce a foal from each mare every year.

“Fertility rate in horses is pretty decent,” Nada said. “We do natural breeding, so we expose our mares to a sire by placing the sire in the same pasture as the mares.” When foals are born, they receive vaccinations, dewormer and are halter-broke. “We begin handling them so they are desensitized to humans,” Nada said. The foals are sold at 3-4 months of age. If the Carters keep foals for breeding stock, they saddle break them and do more training with them when they are 2-3 years old. “I love seeing the babies and training the foals,” Nada said. “It’s also very exciting to see the horses we sold excel for their owners.” The market for horses fluctuates with the amount of disposable income available to buyers, said Nada. In less profitable years, the Carters are still able to sell the foals they have, however, it may be at a lower price than they desire. Additionally, the two work off the ranch for supplemental income. Nada works part-time at Edward Jones Investments in Glenwood and Dale works full-time for the Minnesota Department of Agriculture as a feed
mill inspector. In addition to the horses, the Carters have an 80 head flock of Hampshire ewes, which they sell. Their children also show sheep for FFA and 4-H. “I was raised with sheep and Dale purchased his first Hampshire ewes in high school,” Nada said. “He has always had sheep since then.” Despite the challenges that may come with raising and selling foals, it is an occupation Nada is deeply connected to. She grew up on a horse ranch, Lazy JS Ranch, in Bowman, N.D., which was homesteaded by her grandfather, Joe Silha, in the early 1900s. Nada’s parents, Russ and Fran Silha, operated the ranch and established the family’s quarter horse production sale. Russ passed away in 1997, but the legacy lives on. Nada’s brother, Logan, and his wife, Diana, operate the ranch today while Nada and Dale operate their ranch in Minnesota. “The people we’ve had the good fortune to meet as a result of the horses and sheep has given us lifelong friends and are more like extended family,” Nada said. “We are truly blessed.”

Townsends “old” apple experts By DIANE LEUKAM Staff Writer
DASSEL – Bags of apples, arranged by variety, rested on a multi-level fruit stand inside the store at Dassel Hillside Farm, a quiet mom-and-pop orchard north of Dassel. Other shelves displayed jams and jellies, honey, cookbooks and even a collection of antique apple peelers. A cooler was filled with freshly-made ap-
ple crisp. On the wall, a list of apple varieties indicated that the Paula Reds and Zestars were sold out, with many more varieties listed in the order in which they will ripen. It was Sept. 10 and a customer wandered in, asking about the varieties on hand. Karl Townsend explained the characteristics of apple types to the customer. Nearby, Julie Townsend explained the process of washing, sorting and bagging apples into pecks and half pecks. The husband-and-wife team has been growing apples together for 35 years, and have become experts in their business. “My husband is an industrial engi-

neer by trade and I have a degree in economics,” Julie said. “We wanted to run a farm business, so we took classes through the Hennepin County Technical College on what you could possibly make a living on with 40 acres of farm land. That’s all we could afford to buy.” Through extensive research on various options, the Townsends decided to grow apples, and to purchase a 40-acre corn field south of Dassel. They also decided that if they were going to grow apples they would have to become experts, and over the next three-and-a-half decades, they have done just that. “We bought it in the fall of 1982 and started planting apple trees in 1983,” Julie said. Several years later, they would begin a 30-year business growing strawberries, and their crops did not stop there. They planted Christmas trees, selling them in early winter. During that time, both were employed full time at 3M in Hutchinson, a position Karl left in 1991, with Julie following in 2000. Since then, they have worked side by side on their farm. Karl, now 64, and Julie, 63, are on the other end of the spectrum, well into the process of figuring out how to make their lives easier and more efficient. They would like to continue selling apples in-
definitely. “That’s our whole life [now],” Karl said. “How can we keep doing this in our retirement years? Everything takes two days that used to take a day. I pick [apples] and I keep up with the teenagers. As soon as they leave I’m so tired!” They no longer sell Christmas trees or strawberries. In fact, 2017 was their last crop of strawberries. Something had to go. “I did the math once and I think I’ve picked about 2 million apples in my life,” Karl said. “The math is simple. There are about 100 apples in a bushel; there are about 20 bushels in a bin, [multiplied by] how many bins I’ve picked in the last 35 years and I came up with 2 million.” The apple orchards themselves have been downsized from 20 acres of trees to their current six acres, or about 4,000 trees. They graft all their own dwarf trees using crabapple root stocks out of Washington State, which they order by the hundreds. “There are different root stocks that we combine with different trees,” Julie said. “We have some that were developed

and field days were helpful, as well as networking with many people. “Now you can Google stuff, but back in the 80s that was not available,” Julie said. They also work with a consultant from Staples Community College. As the name Dassel Hillside Farm might suggest, the location of the apple orchards on hillsides is part of the success of the business. Julie explained the importance of location and a phenomenon called air drainage in protecting apple blossoms from the cold. “In the spring when you have a frost coming, the cold air drains down into the valley,” she said “That’s why you want to be on a hill. If you have a frost too early it will kill all your blossoms. You can get a wind machine or hire a helicopter to fly overnight or you can have good air drainage so the [cold] air goes down to the bottom of the hill. Each time of the year has its own list of chores for the Townsends. Winter is time for pruning, which is done aggressively to keep trees at 12 feet or less in height, and to allow for air circulation. In the spring, new trees are planted if needed, and by mid-May, bees are delivered for pollination,
so they are in the orchard when the trees bloom. Summer brings mowing, which is done with an orchard mower, a huge efficiency for the Townsends. “We used to take the lawn mower and go back and forth by every tree trunk,” Karl said. “When you have 6,000-7,000 trees, that gets old.” In the summer, scouting for diseases is done, in search of various pests and problems using a process called integrated pest management. If a threshold of a specific pest or disease is reached where there will be damage, only then will they spray. “The analogy I use is we don’t use a shotgun, we use a rifle,” Karl said. Irrigation is done with an overhead sprinkler system which is pulled through the orchard, which delivers 3 inches of water whenever they irrigate. “Apple trees have deep roots; we want to water real deep and then not water again for four weeks,” Karl said. Fertilizer is applied through foliar feeding, where liquid fertilizer is sprayed directly on the leaves, with very small amount of nitrogen applied to the ground by hand to each tree in the spring.

“You have to be very careful with adding just a little bit of nitrogen on the soil in the spring,” Karl said. “To broadcast spread it is just too much nitrogen and the trees grow too much and the fruit quality goes down. We want apples; we don’t want firewood.” The bases of all the trees are covered with a hardware cloth screen to protect them from mice and rabbits, and an electric fence around young trees keeps the deer away. Also during the summer, young trees are
trained so the branches will grow more horizontally, producing a better crop. The branches are spread out at the bottom of the tree to create better air flow and disease control. Hand thinning of small apples, especially on years where the trees set many apples, takes the Townsends hundreds of hours during the summer. Their goal is to keep the stress on the trees down, and to keep the load of apples consistent from one year to the next. Harvesting is done throughout the fall, with all picking done by hand as
each variety ripens. Only the perfectly ripe apples are picked, requiring each tree to be picked three to four times during its harvest time. Karl, along with two teenage boys, wear picking bags that hold 20 to 30 pounds of apples, which are carefully emptied into bins. The bins are hauled into a large shed, where special equipment is used to wash and sort the apples by size. They are then bagged by the peck or half-peck and stored in a large cooler. From there, they will either be sold in the Townsends’ store or sold wholesale to grocery stores within the area. One part of downsizing the Townsends miss is giving school tours, something they really enjoyed over the years. However, they are not able to keep up with everything, especially with school tours coming during the busiest weeks of the year. “We miss the kids but you gotta keep selling apples; that one’s not a choice,” Karl said. The success of Dassel Hillside Farm is the result of planning and a lot of hard work. “You don’t just throw the trees in the ground and take wheelbarrows of money to the bank,” Julie said. “If you are going to PHOTOS BY DIANE LEUKAM do something you have to Apples are picked by hand into these bags, which are then emptied have a passion for doing it.” through the bottom of the bag into bins.
And they needed to become experts. They figured if they have not learned their trade by now, they never will. But, it was Sept. 10, there were apples to be picked, and a college student would be there soon to help. Karl looked at his wife and dismissed himself. “I gotta lay down for a couple minutes, Julie,” he said. “I gotta keep up with A bin holding 20 bushels of Honeycrisp apples is ready to be sorted that kid all afternoon!” and bagged into pecks or half-pecks Sept. 10. The apples will either be sold at the Townsends’ store or wholesale through area grocery stores. Another kind of farm Goerdt grows pistachios in California By DIANE LEUKAM Staff Writer
MADERA, Calif. – In his dad’s shop near Sauk Centre, John Goerdt learned about tools like ball peen hammers, drive sockets and allen wrenches at a young age. The son of Mike and Mary Goerdt, John graduated from Sauk Centre High School and then spent two years in the diesel mechanics program at North Dakota State College of Science in Wahpeton, N.D. He was ready to put those tools, and many more, to work. Then he met Kristen Cotter, a girl from Madera Ranchos, Calif., the daughter of Howard and Sharon Cotter. Their meeting turned out to be an event that would change the course of Goerdt’s life, and eventually draw him to another line of work where he could combine both the farming and diesel mechanics knowledge he had gained.
The two married in 2007 and lived in Sauk Centre for a number of years with Kristen teaching in the Sauk Centre school district and John working as a diesel mechanic. As the years passed, Kristen knew her father back home would soon be retiring. And she knew John would be the perfect fit as a replacement for him. The family, including Leighton, 8, and Wyatt, 7, moved to Madera Ranchos in January, 2016, where John is now the maintenance supervisor at Agri-World Cooperative, a large pistachio farm. “We have 3,500 acres – 3,200 in trees and the remaining in roads and buildings and other unfarmable land,” Goerdt said. “A creek also runs through it.” Goerdt is responsible for all the equipment and maintenance. One fulltime lube truck driver changes the oil on all the equipment as well as daily maintenance and fuel. Another employee helps Goerdt in the shop and takes care of maintenance on the buildings and roads and whatever else needs to be done. Madera is in the desert where in the summer the high temperatures are well above 100 degrees, reaching a maximum of around 115 degrees with lows in the 80s. Winters are much cooler, with highs in the 50s and lows around 30 degrees. And it is dry. “We haven’t had any rain since the beginning of May,” Goerdt said. “We ir-

rigate all summer.” Like any other crop, pistachio trees have a growing season and a unique life cycle. However, there is one difference with pistachio trees which became apparent when Goerdt was asked how long the trees live. “Nobody knows,” he said. “They haven’t been around long enough to get to that point. They originated in the Middle East and they grow as a bush there, so as a tree form [like we have] they don’t know. The trees are almost 40 years old and they
just keep getting better all the time.” The pistachio farm is comprised of blocks of trees planted in rows, with 110 trees per acre, planted in a grid pattern. “When they first plant trees, they have to go in with a big bulldozer with a ripper and rip down into the soil 7 feet to break it up so the roots have a chance to grow,” Goerdt said. “Otherwise it’s like trying to plant a tree in a concrete road,

harvest time at home on the farm. “It’s the same as drying corn,” he said. “It’s all the same equipment. All they do is change the size of the holes in the bottom.” The processing is hired out and done off-site, with the pistachios hauled to five plants from one to three hours away. Like apple trees, pistachio trees have on and off years. During their on year, they produce up to 6,000 pounds per acre and on their off year, 1,500 to 2,000 pounds. “It’s every other year and they flip flop,” Goerdt said. “The way our trees are planted, our blocks are

staggered so we have some blocks that are on and some blocks that are off, so we get a good average every year.” From there, the pistachios are graded by size, packaged and shipped around the United States and the world. “We buy some for ourselves from the processor but other than that, we never see them again,” Goerdt said. There are three grades of pistachios, with the lowest grade being sold in the United States. The middle grade goes to China and Asia and the high grade to Japan and Europe. “The Japanese and the
Europeans are willing to pay more than we are,” Goerdt said. “They are paying almost $20 a pound for the high grade.” A perk of being in the business is the ability to purchase high-grade pistachios for $4 a pound from the processors. Goerdt said the adjustment to living in Madera was easy. He enjoys his work, which has similarities and differences to farming in Minnesota. They do not have to stop working because of the weather, and he has not shoveled snow in three

years. “Now we look forward to winter,” he said. “That’s when we spend more time outside because it’s not as hot. The lifestyle is not much different as far as activities and things to do; it’s just a different location.” Kristen teaches at Golden Valley School District in Madera Ranchos, at the same elementary school she attended as a child. Kristen and Leighton are involved with horses and go to rodeos and competitions much like Kris-
ten did growing up. Wyatt rides a dirt bike because he does not want anything to do with the horses. And, like his dad before him, he spends time in the shop. “Wyatt was with me almost every day this summer at work,” Goerdt said. “They [the company] are family friendly – they don’t mind if the kids come to work.” For this family, raising pistachios is a natural fit, and just another way of farming.

A shaker is placed on the base of a pistachio tree. When the tree is shaken, the fruit is dislodged and gathered into bins before being hauled to a processing plant for hulling and drying. Pistachio trees produce clusters of fruit called drupes. This fruit is within a week or two of harvest.
