Community approves Pleasantview referendum Ballot tallies 3,054 yes votes BY ANNA HINKEMEYER STAFF WRITER
SAUK RAPIDS – Pleasantview Elementary School will be replaced with a new building on its current site after voters approved a $37.1 million bond referendum Nov. 5. All six district precincts, along with absentee ballots, totaled 4,276 votes. The community supported the referendum with 3,054 yes votes over the 1,222 no votes. “I am excited for a number of reasons,” said Aaron Sinclair, superintendent of the district. “I am excited for the students and staff at Pleasantview because in a few years, they will be walking into a brand-new building, which has been a long time coming. I am also excited for the district because now that Pleasantview will be replaced, we can accomplish so many things at our other buildings.” The proposed building will be 107,595 square feet with a capacity for 797 students. The current building educates 750 students in 85,229 square feet. Pleasantview Elementary has been a concern for the district for a number of

Nemeth cousins harvest big bucks in youth hunt BY NATASHA BARBER STAFF WRITER
RICE – When the Nemeth family takes to the stands opening morning of Minnesota’s deer hunting firearms season, they will rest assured they already have meat in the freezer. And, a few new decorations on the way for their walls. Cousins Ari and Shelby Nemeth bagged monster bucks Oct. 19 when they participated in Minnesota’s first statewide youth deer hunt on land northeast of Rice. The two took advantage of the early season, which was available to ages 10-17. Lest we forget Art club sells poppies as remembrance of sacrifices made BY ANNA HINKEMEYER STAFF WRITER
SAUK RAPIDS – Red flowers sit on a rack awaiting to be chosen, but these flowers do not sit in soil needing water. Rather, these flowers have been fired, molded and decorated with veterans in mind. Twelve students in the Sauk Rapids-Rice High School art club have spent the last six weeks constructing ceramic red poppies for the biennial poppy project.

“This is a way to honor the servicemen and women for their sacrifices while simultaneously allowing the students to be creative,” said Shelly Chambers, art teacher and art club advisor. “The students enjoy this project.” The art club has put 120 hours of after-school work hours into the poppies to have them ready prior to Veterans Day. Chambers started the project in 2015 during her first year of teaching at Sauk Rapids-Rice High School. She did a similar project with an art teacher at her previous position in South Carolina. The project was inspired by the poem “In Flanders Field” by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, as well as the artist Paul Cummins’s installment of “Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red” at the Tower of London, where 888,246 red poppies commemorated World War I veterans. “People associate the poppy

with Veterans Day, and each year we do the project, we ensure the poppies are ready prior to Veterans Day,” Chambers said. “Many of the people who purchase the poppies from us are gifting them to veterans or someone who knows a veteran. Of the 19 people purchasing, 15 noted they were giving at least one away in that regard.” The club made 100 poppies for the project in its first year. This year, they crafted 56. “With each time we do the project, the demand in the community decreases some,” Chambers said. “All of the poppies from previous years are still out in the community, so those people don’t often want more unless they are giving away to others. This project has built up momentum within the community, especially among the veterans, and we will continue to do the project until it has run its course and the community no longer asks for them.” To make a poppy, clay is cut, rolled and formed. Then, the clay is heated to form ceramic. Students then paint and glaze the poppies before firing again to form vibrant colors.

This year, the students opted to add things like paper leaves, green gauze and ribbon. Midway Iron and Metal Inc., of St. Cloud, donated 3-foot rods to serve as the stems. From there, the industrial technical department volunteered to thread the rods into the poppies. “People want to recognize others for their sacrifice, and these poppies are a visual reminder each day,” Chambers said. “You can’t buy these anywhere else but from us, and each one is hand-painted and hand-glazed by students in their own style.” The art club will also present a ceramic poppy

We went through the process that seemed right for the time and were able to bring forward a plan the community supported.”

prior Thursday and Friday and having passed on a four- and six-pointer, Ari decided this buck looked bigger. It was around 10 a.m. when the buck crossed a recreational vehicle path 65 yards from Ari’s stand. Mike, who sat in the stand with his daughter, grunted to get the animal to stop. As the deer listened, Ari set up her shot with her Savage .243 bolt action rifle she had received from her grandparents, John and Peggy Herman, for her birthday in May. Ari pulled the trigger. “I knew she hit it; I was watching,” Mike said. “I didn’t know how big it was and I don’t think she knew either.” Mike and Ari found the buck in the meadow brush 40 yards away. With temperatures in the 60s Saturday, the two brought the deer home, caping and processing the animal immediately. They were nearly fin-
ished when Mike received the call to assist in finding Shelby’s deer. Shelby had been watching smaller deer from her stand for quite some time when she con-
“She never goes hunting, but it was dark, so I wanted everyone I could to track it down,” Shelby said. Both deer were taken to the taxidermists for full mounts. Shelby’s deer was determined to have a genetic defect – the reason why the deer was still in velvet – and will be scored as a final product. The meat from the deer will be processed into ground venison, sausage and venison sticks. With their daughters having already bagged big ones this season, Mark and Mike will await their turn as the firearms hunt continues. “We still have more on camera,” Mike said. And will smiles and laughs the men simultaneously agreed, “They’re not quite as big.”

harvested 5,700 deer Oct. 17-20. It allowed young hunters an additional opportunity to hunt without affecting their eligibility to participate in the regular firearms season. Due to this year’s intensive three-deer harvest limit in permit area 221, the girls will look to harvest additional deer alongside nearly 500,000 Minnesota hunters who will be afield Saturday, Nov. 9. The Nemeth cousins said the youth hunt allowed them to be selective when choosing their first deer of the season, and it certainly paid off. “I didn’t necessarily tell myself I had to shoot something bigger than my 10-pointer; I just wanted the deer to be big,” said Shelby, daughter of Mark and Joy Nemeth. “When I saw the deer, I didn’t realize how bit it was; I just thought it was a tall six- or eightfpointer. When we eventually found the deer I shot in the woods, I was like, ‘Whoa.’” ‘Whoa’ was an understated reaction. Shelby’s 15-point non-typical harvest – still in velvet – left the 16-year-old shocked. Ari, daughter of Mike and Missie Nemeth, had a similar reaction when she harvested her 11-point buck nine hours earlier that same day. The thick brush prevented Ari from seeing the exact size of the deer’s antlers. “I wanted to get a big one,” said Ari, 15. “It was the youth hunt, so I thought I could wait because I had the rest of the (regular firearms) season.” But, having sat the
sidered heading in. It was nearing nightfall, around 6:45 p.m., and passing traffic had scared a group of animals away from her stand. “I was looking across my field one last time before heading in and my heart rate shot through the roof,” Shelby said. The oncoming darkness limited Shelby’s ability to see the deer’s size. “It only had its two front legs outside of the tree line, so I pretty much saw the rack,” Shelby said. “That’s how I found it. I saw the big tall rack poking up. Then, I could make out the head and front shoulder, but not much else. I lined up my sights behind the front quarter and hoped for the best. It was double the size I thought.” Because sunset was upon her, Shelby enlisted four others to help her find her prized possession. Joy found the animal in the woods about 80 yards away.

Public works continues projects as winter nears Maximum loads decreased at County Road 13 bridge contractor, Knife River, will be out there this week, blading and shaping that up to get it to the condition where we (the county) will take over winter maintenance of the road.” Byrd said it is likely the road will need to be have some reworking done in spring, and, dependent on weather, the road should be completed by June 5, 2020. Bridge inspections are ongoing in the county, and Byrd said the public works department will decrease the maximum load weights allowed to travel over the Elk River at County Road 13. He said the bridge, which was built in 1967, has significant deterioration of the steel pylons and showed the board photos of section loss, flaking and corro-
BY NATASHA BARBER STAFF WRITER
FOLEY – As the temperatures drop and Mother Nature shows its sure signs of the seasons changing, the Benton County Public Works Department is winding down its construction projects for the year. Chris Byrd, public works director, updated the Benton County Board of Commissioners Nov. 6 regarding ongoing projects. On County Road 78, Byrd said gravel is in place, and there are soft spots that will need to settle over the winter months. “We would not pave on that today even if weather would allow that,” Byrd said. “But, we have a drivable surface and our
sion. Byrd plans on creating a project where the bridge will be sandblasted and repaired. He said the county will need to wait for low water levels or build a coffer dam to execute effective repairs. “In the interim, though, we’re going to downgrade the bridge and post it for maximum loads until we can get the pylons fixed, just out of an abundance of caution because we are having section loss,” Bryd said. “Steel is kind of straight forward; its strength is directly proportional to its thickness in most cases. … Percentage of section loss could be related to strength loss.” The timeline of when the bridge will be repaired is unknown. One bridge was closed indefinitely and another bridge had weight restrictions posted earlier this fall due to safety concerns.
Looking into next year, the county will be responsible for over $100,000 of the $3.7 million Minnesota Department of Transportation project along Highway 23 next fall. MnDOT will be installing a reduced conflict intersection at County Road 8, but will also update traffic signals at County Road 1 (Mayhew Lake Road) and where 15th Street Northeast and Highway 95 meet Highway 23. Because county roads benefit from the improvements, the county shares the financial responsibility. “$108,000 is what they are asking for next year,” Bryd said. “I don’t have levy money for that next year, so I asked to use state aid allotment.” Although Byrd intends to use state aid to fund the county’s portion, it has yet to be approved. In other board news: - Approved a one-year, $180,000 contract with Centra-
Care Health to provide medical services to inmates incarcerated at the Benton County Jail. The sheriff’s office compared three quotes for jail medical providers, and CentraCare was the lowest. CentraCare has been providing this service to Benton County since 2017. - Approved round No. 3 SCORE grants for four entities. Benton County Parks Department will receive $6,210 for trails at Bend in the River Park. The city of Foley will receive eight chaise lounge chairs for its municipal pool area; they will receive $3,380.10. Foley School District will receive $12,446.25 for composting trailers. And, Tri-County Organics will receive a total of $29,951.63 for costs associated with the composting business. - Accepted a donation of $2,198 from the Backing the

RICE – The Rice City Council worked toward a balanced budget Monday evening as they attended a work session prior to the regularly scheduled Nov. 4 meeting. The goal: squeeze $143,176 worth of department requests into their $30,000 goal. The council settled on the goal after reviewing the difference between city revenues and expenditures and leaving the city a roughly $15,000 cushion in the black to build a stronger fund balance. After nixing laptops for council members, the $45,000 addition of a police officer, and other items, and, making the decision to add $5,000 each to the parks, fire and police departments for projects or capital outlays, the city made more compromised
numbers for contract years beginning in 2021. - Approved the Rice Police Department’s policy for body cameras. The RPD will follow the same policy as the Benton County Sheriff’s Office because the two agencies work closely with one another, according to Rice Police Chief Ross Hamann. - Approved a purchase agreement with Virnig Properties LLC in the amount of $18,000 for a 4.5-acre parcel on Gateway Drive. The closing date is scheduled for Nov. 22. The property is zoned heavy industrial. - Approved a clarification in utility billing procedures. When the 25th of the month (the due date for utility bills) falls on a Friday when city hall offices are closed, utility bills will be due the following business day rather than the day prior. - Rice City Hall will be closed Monday, Nov. 11, in observance of Veterans Day.

“I think people are going to be a lot more receptive to us putting more of that into streets as long as we are continuing to do something with the audio,” Skroch. Council member Paula Kampa agreed and said the failures in trial recordings earlier this year were due to the council not being able to be heard. City clerk Julie Fandel reminded the council that resident Caleb Voigt, who has been vocal about his wish for the council to broadcast meetings, had proposed leading a potential fundraising campaign for the city should the council agree to set aside a portion for the updates as well. The council agreed to Skroch’s recommendation. In other council news: - The city of Rice will send one-year fire and emergency services contracts to Graham and Langola townships with the same rates that have been previously used. Then, the council agreed to begin meetings with Graham, Langola and Watab townships to discuss moving to use actual net capacity

decisions. City treasurer Sheri Johnson notified the council of a remaining balance of $13,998 in the 2019 city hall maintenance budget. The city agreed to replace the hall’s doors (estimated $5,000) prior to the end of the year and save the residual for chamber audio updates. The decision alleviated the 2020 request list. Through discussion, the council sliced in half requests for police and fire gear and a fire department computer because of the line items already established balances. A $20,000 street fund and a $14,000 chamber audio request were left on the spreadsheet. A balance of $12,800 remained to be allocated. Mayor Brian Skroch recommended placing $10,000 into the street fund and allocate the $2,800 to audio. He said with the excess from 2019 and the 2020 allotment, the council could find inexpensive options where their voices could be heard as they continue to explore a more advanced system.

Letter to the editor Yes, it is true
A poem to honor Russell Spierowski who was killed in action during the Vietnam War Chris Froelich, Sauk Rapids Fifty years have come and gone; Russ lies in the cold, dark ground. He came from this small town. Is there anyone still around, who remembers or cares? Russ you went away that day. People say you gave your life. Not true, they took it away. He had no choice, you see, just an act of the enemy. You did come home in a different way; yes, you are here to always stay. Come and see where Russ lies; see with your very own eyes. Maybe you will realize; what happened to Russ that day.
On this day remember those who fought for our freedom Bev Grose, president of the Sauk Rapids American Legion Auxiliary No. 254 On this Veterans Day, the members of the Sauk Rapids American Legion Auxiliary No. 254 would like to express our sincere appreciation to the men and women who served and are serving in the United States Armed Forces. We invite everyone to pause today to remember those who have fought for our freedoms. Thank you to all who have so bravely protected us. We know you sacrificed much for your country and all of us. And, though some of you may no longer wear your military uniform, we know you are always on call to serve and protect the freedom and security of the United States of America. American Legion Auxiliary members have dedicated themselves for 100 years to meeting the needs of our nation’s veterans, the military and their families both here and abroad. In the fiscal year 2018-19, members volunteered over 7 million volunteer hours valued at over 1 billion dollars and raised and spent over 22 million dollars. As part of world’s largest womens patriotic service organization, Auxiliary volunteers across the country also step up to honor veterans and military through annual scholarships and also with the American Legion Auxiliary Girls State programs, teaching high school juniors to be leaders grounded in patriotism and Americanism. God’s masterpiece A. Michele Leslie, Sauk Rapids When God created the world, he dreamed that the human race, each morning, would dispatch its team of mercy workers to patrol the earth to find each suffering creature, to mend the broken bones of each little animal, to feed the hungry, to give comfort to the bereaved. At the beginning, God gave us fruit, nuts and seed. He gave us abundance that we might be stewards. He did not expect we would pass by suffering without a glance, let alone create it. It must be difficult for God to be blamed for these atrocities of the human heart. “My poor tender-hearted humans,” God must have thought. “Will they be able to even bear the suffering they find throughout the earth? Perhaps it will be difficult, but as they have lost paradise, I will give them a way to earn it back: by showing mercy to other human beings as well as my beloved animal kingdom. Many of those who suffer can be relived by comfort and compassion. How it shall please humans to help with their kind, loving hearts.” Now, you may think God did not know his creatures quite as well as a creator might have known them. But some would say you are wrong. God knew his creatures, with all their faults. Yes, he knew us better than we knew ourselves – for he also had a superabundance of hope, causing him to look on us with mercy. Thinking we would be kind, he put us here on a beautiful but suffering earth. And now, with war, starvation, sickness and other types of misery throughout the earth – among all God’s creatures, not just humans – the world cries out for mercy. What will he do? Or, what will he expect us to do? A child or little animal cries out in misery – perhaps to never know comfort or hope or peace – to never know what we, God’s masterpiece, could give it. Must we forever disappoint out Maker? Will there someday be peace, harmony, hope? Will love someday prevail? We wait the great Return. We pray, “Thy will do done.” Amen.

BENTON COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS REGULAR MEETING MINUTES OCTOBER 15, 2019 The Benton County Board of Commissioners met in regular session on October 15, 2019 in the Benton County Board Room in Foley, MN with Commissioners Ed Popp, Warren Peschl, Steve Heinen, Spencer Buerkle and Jake Bauerly present. Call to order by Chair Bauerly was at 9:00 AM followed by the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag. Peschl/Heinen unanimous to approve the agenda as written. Duane Walter (7665 Ronneby Road NE, Foley) and Gary Gruba (253 Birch Drive, Foley), appeared before the Board under Open Forum, representing the American Legion. Walter stated the Legion’s desire to build a Veterans Memorial in the City of Foley, referring to a potential site by the Benton County Courts Facility near the southeast corner of the parking lot. He commented “...we would like to either get it donated...or we would lease it...or buy it”; the Legion would maintain the site and pay for associated costs such as electric and liability insurance. Walter stated the Legion’s plan to open the project up to a design contest with designs due by the first of the year; their hope is to start construction in April/May with project completion by Memorial Day. He invited Board members to a public informational meeting to discuss the proposed Veterans Memorial to be held October 28th at 7:00 PM at the Legion; the Legion has currently raised $4,500 toward a goal of $30,000. Several Board members stated their support for this concept and Chair Bauerly thanked Walter and Gruba for their service. Popp/Heinen unanimous to approve the Consent Agenda: 1) approve the Regular Meeting Minutes of October 1, 2019 as written; 2) approve Agreement with David Drown and Associates to conduct a Classification and Compensation Study, and as-needed Job Classification Reviews, and authorize the Chair to sign; 3) approve KnowInk Contract for purchase of electronic poll books, and authorize the Chair to sign; 4) approve Renewal Application for On-Sale & Sunday Sale Liquor License—Oak Hill Golf Club, 8852 Indian Road NW, Rice—and authorize the Chair to sign; and 5) approve OHV (Off Highway Vehicle) Grant with the State of Minnesota, and authorize the Chair to sign. Roxanne Achman, Department of Development Director, explained that the plat of “Renkus Calm Waters”, submitted by property owner, Russell Pikus, and applicant, Mitchell Rengel, is located along the Mississippi River and County Road 55 in Watab Township; the plat consists of replatting three platted lots within Stanley’s Addition into two single family lots. She stated that Mr. Pikus would create a 1.55 acre lot where his home is located and create a 1.08 acre lot just to the south; both of the newly- created lots would exceed the minimum lot requirements. Achman noted that Watab Township has provided their preliminary approval of the plat; an easement on the property will need to be defined before the County Attorney will sign off on the plat. SPORTS/PUBLIC NOTICES
Towns has had enough
At age 23, KarlAnthony Towns is finally showing signs he is mature enough to be the clear leader of a successful NBA team. I understand the timing of that statement might sound ridiculous to some of you, considering Towns was suspended for two games for brawling with Joel Embiid of the Philadelphia 76ers. But I am of the opinion that Towns standing up for himself against Embiid and not sitting idly by and getting bullied provided strong evidence the league is dealing with a different Karl-Anthony Towns this year. Whether he would admit it or not, the Jimmy Butler experience had an impact on Towns. The whole trade demand situation was dramatic and immature, but Towns also got to see the aspects of Butler’s game that are unimpeachably valuable to an NBA team. Butler consistently played hard, backed up his words with actions and did not take you-know-what from anyone. If the leader of a team has that sort of an attitude, it sets a tone where everyone needs to be locked in at all times, generally give maximum effort and be accountable. The Wolves lost that last edge last year when Butler was dealt to Philly, and it is clear Towns is trying to apply those lessons this year as the de facto leader of the team. There is a difference between being the best player on a team and being the leader. Joe Mauer is a great example of this. Mauer was an allstar caliber player for a long period of time, but I do not think anyone believes he was lighting fires under his teammates by giving impassioned speeches or grinding in the weight room at 2

a.m. after a tough road loss. Towns, like Mauer, is an incredibly gifted player and has been the most talented player on a Minnesota roster since the day he was drafted with the No. 1 overall pick. Unlike Mauer, as he matures, Towns is trying to break free from his nice guy reputation. He recognizes the Wolves need a leader with a backbone. Towns is trying to develop into an on-court general who is not going to allow his teammates to miss defensive rotations or whine to a referee while the other team takes off on a fast break. Most importantly, Towns is not going to let himself or his teammates get bullied. I do not condone fighting, particularly between fully-grown adults in a professional setting, but I would be lying if I did not say I was a tiny bit pumped up when Towns did not back down from Embiid. Both players deserved their suspensions and the ensuing Instagram barbs were juvenile hogwash, but by standing
up to Embiid, Towns told the league in no uncertain terms the Wolves are no longer going to let bullies steal their lunch money. In the three full games Towns has played this year, he is averaging 32 points, five made 3-pointers on 52% shooting beyond the arc, 13.3 rebounds, five assists, two blocks and has 2.7 steals. Those are MVPcaliber numbers, and even more importantly, the Wolves won all three of those games. Towns has clearly recognized he is the goto offensive weapon on this team, and head coach Ryan Saunders has catered the team’s offense to his big man’s skills. Towns has always had a nice stroke from long distance, particularly for a 7-footer, but he is now jacking up 10 3-pointers per game. Those are Steph Curry numbers. Towns is not parking at the 3-point line, however. He still ranks third in the league in post touches, and the gravitational pull of his offensive game has opened up opposing defenses and allowed him to flash his passing skills when opponents run a second defender at Towns. If Towns continues to perform at this level, the Wolves are going to be a playoff team. His 3-point percentage will likely regress to his typical 40% range, and the Wolves are eventually going to start playing tougher Western

Conference opponents, but Towns is playing like Kevin Durant right now. That sort of production is absolutely enough to carry a team to a playoff berth. The Jimmy Butler era was dramatic and
most important and rare type of asset available in today’s NBA – a cornerstone player that is going to be an MVP candidate for years to come.

After two intense, teeth-grinding series against Rochester and St. Louis, the Granite City Lumberjacks continued their homestand with an intriguing matchup against the Wausau RiverWolves, who entered Sauk Rapids with a 1-9-1 record. Granite City aptly held down the fort, defeating the RiverWolves 11-0 and 9-0 Nov. 1-2, respectively, at Sports Arena East in Sauk Rapids. Granite City 9, Wausau 0 The Wausau RiverWolves, introduced to the North American 3 Hockey League in 2017, made a trip to Sauk Rapids to play the Granite City Lumberjacks for the first time. With first impressions on the line, the Lumberjacks did not fail to leave their mark. Daymin Dodge recorded his first hat trick,
and the Lumberjacks capped off a one-sided weekend in a 9-0 romp over the RiverWolves Nov. 2. After Friday night’s one-sided first period, the teams were more competitive in game two’s opening minutes. “They tried to slow everything down and played a neutral zone trap, and we acted like we weren’t ready for it,” said D.J Vold, Lumberjacks associate head coach. “It was a slower start by us.” Finally, at 13:10, Troy Dahlheimer cashed in on a scoring chance set up by Tristan Birdsall and Jonah Jangula to give the home team a 1-0 lead. Minutes later, Dodge deposited his first score of the game to quickly increase Granite City’s advantage. “The coaches told us to come out and play hard and have fun,” Dodge said. “Don’t take this team easy.” Tender Bailey Huber picked up his first career shutout over the weekend. The rookie stopped 19 Wausau shots in his strongest performance to date. “I think he’s getting more and more comfortable back there,” Vold said. “I love his confidence to where he’s coming out and playing the

The Lumberjacks tested Wausau goalie Joseph La Forge, launching 56 shots, including 24 in the two-goal first period. “Our message was to keep it simple and don’t be cute,” Vold said. “It’s hard when you’re up a few goals to reel the kids in and keep them playing the right way, but the goal is getting the puck to the net.” Sean Davidson and Carson Simon teamed up for a shorthanded tally at 6:58 in the second period as the Lumberjacks outplayed their inexperienced foes even with a man down. Davidson later assisted on Dodge’s second goal of the game. Dodge, who played high school hockey at

Sports Arena East, has enjoyed the opportunity to suit up for his hometown Lumberjacks. “It’s a great opportunity,” he said. “Playing in your hometown, knowing everyone in the stands, it’s special. Not a lot of players get to play in their hometown.” Building on that sentiment – not a lot of players can say they have scored a hat trick as a member of their hometown team. “Playing in that barn my whole life, it was a nice experience,” Dodge said. “I’ll never forget that.” Tal Holliday put the finishing touch on an energetic second period with his first NA3HL goal at 13:30. Jangula scored two goals to go with his first-period apple, and defenseman Jack Helle picked up three assists as the Lumberjacks saw 12 players record a point. Amongst this prolific point total was the
production of the fourth line trio of Tony Brings, Jangula and Birdsall, who combined for seven points, by far the most of any line on the night. Coming in second was the third line of Nicholas Richert, Dodge and Nick Plautz with a combined four points. “It’s great to see production from those lines,” Vold said. “It frees everyone up to play the game freely. It’s a confidence booster and makes them hungry for more.” The Lumberjacks forced the puck past La Forge four more times in the final period to sum up their dominant offensive showing. Birdsall lent a helping hand in four Granite City goals to contribute the first points of his career. It has been a long time coming. “Tristan’s been good to start the year and is a guy we can rely on to eat up minutes,” Vold said. “He’s been close a bunch of times, and it was one of those weekends where everything went right for him.” The Lumberjacks, hoping to turn their highoctane weekend into the beginning of a winning streak, hit the road to face a familiar opponent. They battled the New Ulm Steel Friday, Nov. 8, at the New Ulm Civic Center in New Ulm. “We know New Ulm is a good team and we know we have to bring it,” Dodge said. “After last weekend (against St. Louis), we have to pick up our practices. Our division is the best in the league and we can’t take

a night off.” Granite City 11, Wausau 0 The Granite City Lumberjacks had a message engrained in their minds heading into their first ever series against the Wausau RiverWolves: Do not treat their visitors lightly. After the first game, it was evident they did not. Jangula delivered the first hat trick of the weekend, and Nate Johnston recorded his first career shutout as the Lumberjacks breezed past the RiverWolves 11-0 Nov. 1 at Sports Arena East in Sauk Rapids. Five of the 11 goals came in the first 13 minutes of the game as Dodge got the party started with a score two minutes into the blowout. Simon blasted home his teamleading ninth goal of the season on a shorthanded rush with Spetz at 3:58, while Dahlheimer and defenseman Kearby Larson scored 35 seconds apart. The Lumberjacks were scoring every 2.8 minutes, with seven Granite City skaters tallying a goal in the first period. The early goals made life easier for Johnston, who stonewalled all 19 shots he faced to remain undefeated on the season. The standout goalie has recorded a .974 save percentage in his past three outings. Jangula found the back of the net in all three periods, with his final goal at 7:58 in the third period concluding the scoring frenzy. The win sent the Lumberjacks to 9-3 on the season.

Former Sauk Rapids-Rice star finds success at St. John’s

COLLEGEVILLE – When Sauk RapidsRice linebacker Richard Carriveau decided to pursue a future in collegiate football, he never glanced west to St. John’s University, a Division III program renowned for its 33 conference titles and four national championships. That is, until the university came to him. Gary Fasching, head coach of the Johnnies, gave Carriveau a visit at the high school and convinced the linebacker to move to Collegeville. “I was following St. John’s, being a local kid,” Carriveau said. “I love their tradition, and I love the aspect of stepping onto campus knowing this community could make me a better person, and I could make this place a little bit better as well.” Carriveau did not make an immediate impact to the vaunted program; he sat behind standout linebackers such as Carter Hanson, Parker

Anderson, Mitch Messman and David Franta during his first two collegiate campaigns. “I spent two long, grueling years on scout team, wondering if I was good enough to play here,” Carriveau said. “I told myself, ‘If I want to play here and be a part of that tradition, I’m going to have to change, physically and mentally.’” The determined Carriveau nearly swapped positions after coaches believed he would be better suited as a defensive line-
man. However, he loved playing linebacker and stuck with his gut. “You get the best of both worlds of being down in the trenches like a defensive lineman, but you’re also running around like a defensive back,” Carriveau said. “It’s that fierce mentality of ‘I’m coming at you and I’m going to hit you as hard as I can.’” The developing Carriveau brought that fire into 2018 fall camps, where he impressed coaches enough to earn a
cherished starting spot on defense. “Richard needed to learn how to be a leader and wanted that success badly,” said Matt Darling, linebacker coach at St. John’s. “He transformed his body. We talked to him about being a D-lineman because he was bigger and a little bit slower. He took that as a challenge and got into amazing shape.” Ever since his spirited climb up the St. John’s linebacker depth chart, Carriveau has built more and more positive energy,
culminating in an electric 2019 season. So far, the 210-pound, 6-3 senior is delivering on his promise to hit hard and often, recording 52 tackles, four tackles for a loss and 2.5 sacks. That line puts Carriveau on pace to eclipse his junior season marks. “It’s awesome I get to see the results of what I’ve put in,” Carriveau said. “But really, it’s about the mentors along the way; not just coaches, but professors. They’ve always given me the leeway to be perfect on the football field but also off of it.” It would be easy to attribute St. John’s success to its high-flying offense. After all, quarterback Jackson Erdmann and company compile 532 total yards per game, an astounding clip that places them fourth in the country. However, longtime defensive coordinator Jerry Haugen always manages to put together a complete defensive unit, and this year is no exception. Opponents have scored 13 touchdowns in eight games and rarely exceed 250 yards per game. Carriveau’s ascension has given the Johnnies defense a mental edge not many offenses can overcome. While the defensive unit does not have their own playbook, Carriveau has taken play design and
recognition into his own hands. “Richard is the type of player that goes home after practice and has created his own playbook,” Darling said. “It’s common for him to send a picture to coaches and say, ‘What if we did something like this?’ He understands defenses at a really high level.” More importantly, Carriveau has emerged as a staunch supporter of his fellow linebackers who is willing to help his teammates with anything. When incoming freshman join the crowded linebacker group, he gives his phone number to them and tells them he is there to help. “It’s a brotherhood,” Carriveau said. “There’s not a single guy on this team that I would not take a bullet for.” To Richard’s parents, Wayne and Brenda Carriveau, and other family and friends, these actions are not surprising; they saw this leadership and accountability from Carriveau in his childhood. “People gravitate toward him,” Wayne said. “He’s a natural born leader. Storm’n Sabres look to improve forwards in season Stockinger, Orth, Trobec lead 2019-20 team BY ANNA HINKEMEYER STAFF WRITER
The 2019-20 season is shaping up for the Storm’n Sabres girls hockey team. The team, which is a cooperative between Sartell-Stephen and Sauk Rapids-Rice school districts, has been practicing for two weeks and faced Rogers Nov. 8 in its home opener in Sartell. SSRR comes off a 15-11-1 record in 2018-19. “We have a really tough schedule right out of the gate, and we are working hard to prepare for that,” said Marty Anderson, head coach. “We play Rogers, St. Cloud, Buffalo and Alexandria in our first four games and all are tough teams. Every game this season will be a battle, and we have to be ready for that.” Last year, the Storm’n Sabres tied with Rogers and won five total games against St. Cloud, Buffalo
and Alexandria, three of which were only separated by one goal. Alexandria joins Section 8AA this season, replacing North Wright County. “Alexandria is a very good team,” Anderson said. “I’m expecting the same level of competition from them as we have from North Wright County. It has been that way in years past, so we will have to work hard against them just like we do with any other team. We should be right in the mix of competitiveness with all of the teams in the section.” The team returns experienced skaters beginning from the net out. Senior goalie Chloe Stockinger will be the starting tender for SSRR. Stockinger was nearly unbeatable during the 2018-19 season, boasting a .924 save percentage in 981 minutes of game time. She recorded 12 wins and one tie. “Having a good goalie

like Chloe makes all the difference for the team,” Anderson said. “She is a phenomenal goalie, and the girls have some reassurance that if they make a mistake, Chloe will have their back and be able to make many saves in the net.” Stockinger is one of three captains and is joined
by forward Anna Orth and defender Riley Trobec. The team will feel the loss of 2019 Sartell-Stephen graduate Brooke Walters. Walters, a forward, played the top line of the 2016 state-participating Storm’n Sabres team as a freshman and contributed 28 goals and 10 assists in her senior season.
“The girls have recognized that it will take many of them to equate to what Brooke did for the team,” Anderson said. “When we had our scrimmage, we had a rotation of seven girls scoring goals for the team, which is what we want. It shows our depth in the forward position.” Anderson expects
contributions from Orth, who had 10 goals and 17 assists last year, Lauren Wensel (3 goals and 11 assists) and Rachel Wieland (3 goals and 10 assists) as well as from Jayden Lommel, Hannah van der Veer and Kelly Carriere. Eighth grade forward, Nora Sauer, will also join the varsity ranks. It is the first time the team has advanced a middle school student on its roster. The Storm’n Sabres ended its playoff run in quarterfinals against Brainerd last February, but Anderson is confident in his team’s ability to bring the heat in the Central Lakes Conference and section. “I think we have another very competitive team this year,” Anderson said. “Our section is always competitive, and we will look different in February around playoff time than we will in November – just from the play experience and fine-tuning technique and skill. But even in the beginning of the season, I expect great, tight matchups from the girls. We are excited.”

Those guys, we go way back. We had some fun, that’s for sure.” Carriveau’s former high school is not a blip in the past; he was approached by Sauk Rapids-Rice wrestling head coach Cole Wilson about a coaching opportunity. Now, the Johnnies senior is an assistant coach for Storm wrestling, a position he expresses heartfelt gratitude for. “Getting the call from Cole was the most exhilarating thing, because I have so much pride for the Storm, being a Sauk Rap-

I’m very thankful for what the Sauk Rapids community has done for me.” Helping youth wrestlers seems to be the completion of a cycle. Wrestling was actually the key that unlocked Carriveau’s football affinity. “Football started for him through wrestling,” Wayne said. “They had wrestling signups, and he started in wrestling and watching football. Watching guys like Ray Lewis and John Randle, he liked the individuality of the sport but also the team spirit.” It becomes more and more clear that Carriveau is adept at keeping himself busy. Along with his coaching and football duties, he also participates in Big Brothers Big Sisters and works as a student medical assistant. He also established the criminology club at St. John’s and wants to be employed by

For now, he is immersed in an unforgettable college football season. “It’s going to be over soon,” he said. “It’s time to cherish the little moments and soak it all in. I can’t worry about that stuff. I have to stay calm, focus on the present and keep doing what I’m doing.” The vocal leader of St. John’s premier defense, in a tradition that extends back to the John Gagliardi era, will maintain his focus on Saturday’s football game. “We play for the perfect game,” Darling said. “(Gary) Fasching tells the guys, ‘The game we have this week is the most important one in our schedule.’ The rest of that doesn’t matter. It’s easy to get caught up in accolades, but we play every game to get better.”

Rice native continues military career
Ringwelski serves country in third tour BY ELIZABETH HOAG STAFF WRITER
RICE – Come midDecember, Sgt. Brandon Ringwelski, of Rice, will be serving his country once more, leaving the states for the Middle East. “My squad and I are just getting prepared,” Ringwelski said. “We’re trying to get into a routine for our new normal.” Ringwelski was deployed for his third tour Oct. 13 and stationed at Fort Hood in Killeen, Texas. The 36-year-old expects to return home in fall 2020. Ringwelski is a sergeant in the 834th Aviation Support Battalion in the U.S. Army National Guard out of Arden Hills. He will be going in support of Operation Inherent Resolve, the U.S. military’s operational name for the military intervention against the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, and Operation Spartan Shield, a U.S. Department of Defense operation in the Middle East. Before Ringwelski travels overseas, he will be granted leave where he plans on visiting friends and exploring Texas. Once the soldier re-

ports for duty and arrives at his destination in the Middle East, Ringwelski’s responsibilities will entail fixing helicopter turbine engines as an aircraft power plant mechanic. “My duties are not combative,” Ringwelski said. “My typical day is a lot like what it would be back home.” Ringwelski, a helicopter technician for the St. Cloud Army Aviation
Support Facility, now starts his days at 5 a.m. “(During) past deployment, I have worked second shift with duty starting at 6 p.m.” he said. “I would go out to the flight line and work until midnight, break and eat lunch and end my workday at 2 a.m.” Following the second duty shifts, Ringwelski returned to his bunker and worked out before playing cards with com-

rades. “A lot of the guys I am serving with, I’ve served with before,” Ringwelski said. “Aviation is a relatively small branch.” For his first tour, Ringwelski was stationed in Iraq for one year beginning in the summer of 2008. During his oneyear stint, Ringwelski returned to the states for a two week leave to spend time with family.
“I enlisted Dec. 29, 2000, during my junior year of high school,” Ringwelski said. “I chose to join the National Guard because it gave me the opportunity to stay closer to home, and I didn’t know what I wanted to do after I graduated.” Between his junior and senior years of high school, Ringwelski went through basic training. “It was high-paced, both physically and men-
tally,” he said. “I got through boot camp taking it day by day, but I enjoyed it.” Together, Ringwelski and his squad were trained in marching, basic combat skills and weapon qualification. The soldier endures a refresher course to refine his skills before each deployment. Ringwelski traveled

sail for war, that is when it started to sink in.” Among the 1,100 men to join Ammend, 36 were in his division. Ammend served as a first division seaman on the U.S.S. Providence (CLG-6). “The Providence was a war ship from WWII,” Ammend said. Once the ship arrived in Japan, it was stationed at their home port in Yokosuka, Japan. While there, Ammend and his crew frequently traveled to ports gathering supplies and helping with aid. The Providence, a 610- by 68foot seventh fleet flagship, carried a three-star commander who was in charge of all ship operations in Vietnam. “The biggest advantage of being on a flag ship was being able to travel to many ports,” Ammend said. “While in Vietnam, we did have to watch out for the Viet Cong because they would put magnetic
bombs on the bottom of the ships and detonate them.” During Ammend’s service, he traveled to Taiwan, Thailand, Korea, Okinawa, Singapore, Malaysia, Jakarta and Borneo. He recalled numerous battles that took place while aboard the Providence. “I remember sailing back and forth between ports, assisting battleships,” Ammend said. “We would ride shotgun, which is where we would turn off all our radar so the enemy wouldn’t be able to see us coming. Once the enemy saw how big we were they usually retreated.” The men worked together whenever they were given global positioning coordinates. “We never saw close up combat,” Ammend said. “We were assigned coordinates for enemy targets and opened fire when told to do so.” While Ammend occupied the Providence, the ship was hit but never
RONNEBY – It seemed as though Richard Ammend was destined to live a military lifestyle as his father, the late Gene, had also served in the U.S. Navy. Ammend voluntarily enlisted, joining the Navy in 1966 and traveled overseas to fight in the Vietnam War. “At the time, the war was really vamping up, and we knew we would be drafted so we enlisted to choose our branch,” said Ammend, a retired electrician from Ronneby. “We knew we were going to be deployed because we were receiving a lot of PHOTOS BY ELIZABETH HOAG shots. The sailor’s ref sponsibilities as part of the e deck force entailed maintaining rust control and s providing a shuttle service o where Ammend operated , a 40-foot utility boat. “We had drills where . we’d lower the service boat in case we ever neede ed to perform a rescue,” Ammend said. “We were trained that if a ship was g going down, swim as fast n as you could away from the ship and flip on your e back.” h The Navy veteran f admitted he did not care y for abandon ship drills s because his commanders y told their crew how far y away from land they were and how deep the water was. e “My grandson once g asked me if I ever thought about going down,” Ame mend said. “The thought d never crossed my mind. d We lived life on the ship just like on land.” n Ammend said he once assisted in a rescue. “While we were in , Vietnam, we opened fire r at the shorelines,” he said. “The Vietnamese frequently camouflage themselves as fisherman. There were some casualties, and we quickly gave aid to the civilians involved. I remember retrieving a young boy out of the water whose arm was hanging on by a piece of skin.” After his two-year tour, Ammend boarded the U.S.S. Oklahoma City (CLG-5) as a gunners mate in the fire control and guns division where he maintained 5- and 6-inch guns that could travel up to 20 miles and controlled

the armory. During this second tour, Ammend visited Korea where he and his comrades helped paint an orphanage. “The kids loved hanging on us,” Ammend said. “We had fun painting. There was even a little girl who helped us who had more paint on her than the walls.” Ammend flew home July 17, 1970, concluding his time serving in the Vietnam War. Throughout Ammend’s service, he made lasting friendships with men he still continues to talk with. “I’ve kept in contact with Les Manning who lives in New York,” Ammend said. “He served with me on the Providence and the Oklahoma.” Ammend also communicated with another veteran, Jim Chryst, who he met in 2014 at a ship reunion in San Diego, Calif. Ammend now focuses his attention on the International Squadron of Happy Hookers, an organization he established with a
group of Vietnam brethren to help those affected by Agent Orange. “I suffered from prostate cancer as a result from Agent Orange,” Ammend said. “I have made it my mission to spread awareness and contribute to others affected.” The veteran has teamed up with CentraCare Health to push awareness. He and others have sold fishing lures to raise nearly $5,000 for the cause. “My time may be done fighting the war, but there are children and generations still affected by this disease,” he said. As Veterans Day approaches, Ammend reflected on what the day means to him. “When we first came home, we were told not to talk about the war and to keep our heads down,” he said. “It is nice to be acknowledged for what we did.”

VETERANS DAY
The journey in Japan Liebelt shares experience during WWII BY ELIZABETH HOAG STAFF WRITER
SAUK RAPIDS – The world was a different place in the 1940s. World War II broke out the year prior to starting a new decade, and men were drafted to help fight against the axis powers. Many young men, including U.S. Army veteran Lloyd Liebelt, opted to voluntarily join. “I joined because I would have been drafted anyway,” said Liebelt, of Sauk Rapids. “By joining, I hoped to be able to choose what branch I ended up in, and I had the opportunity to see another part of the world.” The 94-year-old joined military forces in 1946 at 21 years old along with his late cous-
in Monroe Raugest. Liebelt was born and raised on his parents’ farm in Harvey, N.D., where he worked at until leaving for duty. “I was anxious to leave home,” Liebelt said. “I had only ever seen the world in and around my hometown.” Liebelt reported to Fort Bragg, N.C., for eight weeks of training. There, he was assigned to the U.S. Army 19th Infantry Regiment 24th Infantry Division. Liebelt served his time as a private soldier within the occupational forces and eventually worked his way up to private first class. Once Liebelt completed his training, he traveled home for a two-week period to say farewell to his family before he reported to California where he boarded a ship overseas. “I left San Francisco for the Philippines early 1947 where we were given orders to try and disarm the Japanese,” Liebelt said. “The war had been over for about

From the Philippines, Liebelt and his unit arrived in Japan in early 1947 and were stationed in Beppu on the island of Kyushu, Japan. “While we were over in Japan, we basically

were in charge of keeping the peace and cleaning up,” Liebelt said. As part of the occupational forces, the company’s mission was to help reconstruct Japan. The U.S. military led allies in the occupation and rehabilitation of the Japanese state between 1945-52. Amongst his mission to keep the peace, Liebelt was also given passes to venture into society and explore Japan. During one of his outings, he witnessed the aftermath of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. “It was about threequarter cleaned up by the time I saw the debris,” Liebelt said. “The civic building was at the

center of the blast. The concrete structure of the building was still standing, but the metal had completely melted.” Liebelt also took advantage of his time away from base by fishing off docks. “I tried quite a few different food selections like dried squid,” Liebelt said. “It tasted like chestnuts.” After months of standing guard and maintenance work, Liebelt joined a band to provide entertainment for his fellow comrades and officers. “Other members of the band and myself often played for officer clubs,” he said. “We also performed at Japanese festivals where I befriended quite a few Japanese people.” Liebelt learned to play the trombone and guitar. To this day, he strums the strings of an electric guitar. He also learned how to play the bass drum and trumpet for the raising and lowering of the flag for reveille and retreat. Liebelt kept to himself mostly because of his introverted personality, making friends with a handful of other soldiers. “Most of them were from the East Coast and Hawaii,” he said. “When we were discharged, I never remained in contact.” Liebelt was discharged in February 1948. “I spent two weeks traveling back to California on a ship,” he said. “I was eager to dock and return home.” The day he arrived

He went home to the family farm and helped with crop harvest and took care of the animals. “I never wanted to take over the farm,” Liebelt said. “About a year later, I traveled to Minneapolis and worked at an auto body store for about a year and a half. Eventually, I traveled back to California in hopes of attending college.” Liebelt dreamt of becoming an aeronautical engineer, but due to a mix up in paper work, Liebelt was unable to attend college and began working for Southern Pacific Railroad. After a location and career change, Liebelt met his late wife, Naomi, and had four children: Sandra, Cynthia, Jeanne and James. “We moved to Lodi, Calif., and I worked for General Mills until I retired,” Liebelt said. In July 2018, Liebelt moved to the Good Shepherd Community in Sauk Rapids. “I really like it here,” he said. “There are a lot of activities to keep busy and many people to talk with.” PHOTO BY ELIZABETH HOAG Liebelt said his time in the military seems to Lloyd Liebelt, a WWII veteran, plays an electric guitar at be a small part of his life compared to the grand the Good Shepherd Community Oct. 22 in Sauk Rapids. scheme of things.
