The Outpost Mercantile to close July 29
BY BEN SONNEK | STAFF WRITERFor nearly nine years, The Outpost Mercantile has offered locals and visitors a wide range of natural products, inviting people with their sign on Main Street and their location off the Lake Wobegon Trail in Sauk Centre. Ron and Sue Meyer have decided to close the Outpost July 29 as they prepare to move to Florida and dedicate more time to broader-reaching homeopathic work, although they plan to be frequent visitors to their Minnesotan friends and family.
“It was a hard decision because we have such wonderful customers,” Sue said. “It’s what’s going to be best for our family at this time.”

Ron and Sue founded The Outpost Mercantile Sept. 8, 2014, after Ron lost his job and wanted to run a smaller vacation-type store. Around the same time, Sue had grown an interest in homeopathy and earned a degree in naturop-

Cutting the greens is going green at Lynx National Golf Course south of Sauk Centre. Stearns Electric Association, partnering with their wholesale power provider Great River Energy, has leased an electric lawnmower to the golf course for the summer to learn more about its energy usage, charge time, mowing capability and more.

and residential members with their electrification needs into the future,” said John Pantzke, SEA business development representative. “Additionally, we anticipate the data will benefit Mean Green Electric Mowers, too.”
The lawnmower is a Mean Green Machine EVO mower, with a 74-inch cutting width, a 13 mph top speed, a 37 horsepower equivalent and a lithium battery fixed to the machine that can last up to eight hours on a single charge. It features a touchscreen display with a passcode and administrator mode, so it needs no keys and can be started with a button. With its low center of gravity – the battery being only eight inches above the ground – the EVO is stable on slopes of up to 20 degrees.

Politics and policymaking have long been an interest of Jacob Holck, pastor of United Methodist Church in Sauk Centre and Grey Eagle. Thanks to his service as a chaplain for the Minnesota House and Senate, he has been able to get an up-close perspective on the state’s legislative process as well as the legislators themselves.

“I preach every Sunday to my congregations, but this, you’re in the Capitol,” Holck said. “Both chambers are absolutely gorgeous, magnificent, and the legislators are there; these are people who’ve been elected by the people of Minnesota. They have the authority to do these things, and you’re just this pastor serving Sauk Centre and Grey Eagle. It’s a little nerve-wracking, but they’re kind people.”
The Capitol used to have formally appointed annual chaplains, but nowadays, state legislators select their guest chaplains; Holck’s uncle, David Webster, a Lutheran pastor, had previously been a chaplain at the Capitol. Holck recently moved to Sauk Centre, but when he lived in Paynesville, District 13A Representative Lisa Demuth, now the Minnesota House minority leader, put in Holck’s name for House chaplain. He accepted and served in that role in 2022, and after that, District 13 Senator Jeff Howe put in Holck’s name to be a Senate chaplain, and Holck accepted when he was contacted by the senate secretary.

Lynx has participated in Stearns Electric programs in the past, so they were a natural choice for the pilot project.
“By rough calculations, using the electric mower for eight hours per day will save about five to six gallons of diesel fuel daily,” said Lynx owner Tim Hinnenkamp.

“Additionally, the electric lawnmower will allow us to use even less oil on the golf course. The less oil on the course, the better.”
Lynx groundskeepers
Mark Knoblauch and Butch Moritz have had a couple of weeks to handle the new electric mower, charting factors such as how they have been using it, how many hours they have put in and how long it takes to charge. So far, the mower charges overnight, and when a separate plugin station is installed at Lynx for the mower, they will be able

Recently, Holck served as Senate chaplain May 10 and as House chaplain May 15. His duties have, overall, covered the last few weeks of the session.
“It gets really crazy over there during the end of session,” Holck said. “The Monday (May 15) I was there, it was a very busy day. They were working on their public safety bill, which was some 650 pages, and there was a significant debate.”
That day, Holck was on the House floor starting a half-hour before they gaveled in at 10 a.m. Aside from a break for meetings and caucusing from 12-3:30 p.m., the meeting lasted until around midnight.
“It was interesting to see the spirited debate among both sides and the points they raised,” Holck said. “When you watch it on TV or online, you get a perspective of it’s a giant room and everyone’s listening. Really, nobody’s listening; there are all of these side conversations going on … There’s so much more conversation and informality going on in the house.”
On the Senate side, though, Holck finds proceedings to be more formal.
For instance, the Senate appeared to have a stricter dress code than the House, and beverages must be consumed in the retiring room instead of in the chamber. Consequently, Holck is usually more comfortable giving his opening prayer in the House than the Senate.
“In the Senate, it’s nerve-wracking because everything’s more formal,” Holck said. “I don’t want to slip up at all. There’s always that fear, but I did pretty well this year.”
When the meeting is underway, Holck remains in the chamber to listen to the debates. As a political science major and district director for the Joint Religious Legislative Coalition, he finds these meetings interesting.
“I like to go, specifically, during the last few weeks of session because I find that’s when you’re needed the most – when things are not necessarily toxic but when things are really heightened and tensions are high,” Holck said. “They talk more, they lean on you
to tell how much power is being used as well.
“The main advantage is you’re not using fuel,” Knoblauch said. “The machine I’m running is old, and it’s sucking fuel.”

The EVO mower also requires less in terms of maintenance. For instance, the mower deck has no pulleys and instead has motors for each blade.

“We’re constantly working on our machines,” Knoblauch said. “They’re 20 years old; this (EVO) is 20 days old.” Moritz usually prefers old-school equipment, but the electric mower won him over.
“[Did I want] a 100% electric lawnmower? No –until I got on that machine,” Moritz said. “It’s got a comfortable seat and nice features. If you come to something in front of you, you just have to push a little button with your foot, and the deck pulls right to the top. Push the other button, and it lowers right down.”
Knoblauch’s first time using the mower was the morning of May 31 when he cut the driving range; that stretch is usually cut by a diesel mower with a 15-foot cutting width. While he was impressed by the mower’s speed, its width did mean he had to go back and forth about twice as much, and the speed did not help improve his time much.

“I took it out on fairway hole number one,” Knoblauch said. “It goes faster, there’s no doubt … but if you go fast and start hitting those bumps, it wears you out, so you have to go at a controlled speed depending on the terrain you’re on.”
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/230831191339-410170dfbf44c8fc5e599feda12035d7/v1/99399f4da316b38c4e4946f50fd0654c.jpeg)
Additionally, the grass on the range was long and thick, so mowing quickly was not very effective. Even so, the speed meant the mower could get from place to place faster on the trails, and after Knoblauch mowed for about five hours, the battery was down to about 28%, on track for its eighthour battery life. The mow-
Holck’s prayer in the Minnesota Senate
Most heavenly and gracious Creator, we are gathered together today to do the work of the people of the Great State of Minnesota. We ask you, Most Holy One, that your wisdom be present in this chamber today. May we shed our partisan differences, and may we keep in our minds, hearts and souls what you would have us do. We must love one another and care for every Minnesotan as if they were our neighbor, despite the differences we might have. In this endeavor, might we consider the words of St. Francis of Assisi: Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy. O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console, to be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive, it is in pardoning that we are pardoned and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
Senators, I ask that you remember this challenge this day. And may love, peace, hope and joy be the rule of the day and not the exception. Amen.
a little more, they’re a little more conversational, and that’s when I can be the most help to those people.”
Through his chaplain duties, Holck has garnered friendly connections with legislators in the House and

Senate. Once he has opened the meeting with prayer, Holck will often advise a few of the lawmakers who come to him for spiritual counseling, prayers or feedback on what they are discussing.
“It’s an experience to do

Moritz has noticed the effects of the mower’s lower center of gravity already, and it has other methods to handle the slopes.
“When you get on a slope you want (one) wheel to be able to pull more,” Moritz said. “It automatically puts power to that wheel.”

Moritz and Knoblauch have been getting used to the sensitivity of the mower’s controls, and as they get it figured out, they can get the grass cut more quickly.
Stearns Electric’s goal for the mower is for it to be used for about 40 hours per week, and the groundskeepers have been enjoying getting that time in so far and are glad Lynx was chosen for the pilot.
“I think the concept is great,” Knoblauch said. “That’s the future, obviously. It’s not perfect, but they’re tweaking things to get it better.”

these things, but we sometimes think of our legislators just as their policies and positions on things,” Holck said. “But, when you get to visit with them one-on-one as a fellow human being or in a pastoral role, it’s then you realize they’re just normal people too. We just might not agree on everything.”
Holck is also familiar with the Minnesota Capitol building. Back when he served on the Paynesville School Board as a legislation delegate, he would often be at the Capitol. The only place he gets lost is in the basement’s tunnels.
Holck will be returning to the Capitol for both House and Senate duty during the next legislative session once he picks times that will work for him. He looks forward to sitting with the legislators in the chambers and hearing the debates.
“It’s not a pretty process,” Holck said. “Being on the House floor and Senate floor, being in committee hearings, seeing these things take place – seeing with your own eyes rather than just hearing about it on the news – that’s pretty powerful because you can say, yep I know this happened. … It’s powerful, knowing you can be part of this democratic process, and that’s what I like about being a chaplain. I can experience that democracy firsthand.”

Life is good. Simple joys and slow living often remind me of life’s goodness. Thinking back to where this simplistic way of life started for me, I can’t help but remember a simple phrase my mother has said all of my life: “God is good, all the time. All the time, God is good.”
I’m so thankful for her peppering God’s words into my life. They never seemed forced or ill-timed. Simply put, they have always been right on the money. Sometimes, it’s just taken me a minute or two to embrace the goodness in these words and lessons. My mother has always found the right way to share the Lord’s messages in a manner that is relatable and easily understood.
Kayla’s Korner by Kayla Hunstigerwhether it’s not having someone to play with at the park, not having a friend to enjoy a cup of coffee or a beverage with or not having the ability to move easily and without pain, has certainly changed the way I approach my life. Embracing limitations, instead of focusing on what I can’t have or do, has done wonders for my mental health. I’ve actually come to enjoy when a limitation presents itself because I’m given the opportunity to decide if I truly need X-Y-Z in my life, come up with a solution or an alternative or even simply recognize I’m all too often fortunate enough to have very few limitations in my life.
The future of prom is bubble soccer.
Yes, I can explain.
Like many great things in life, it all started with a date night. Maggie and I got a sitter for our kids and went out with a couple of our friends Saturday evening, keeping it local with an El Mezcal dinner and finishing up with drinks at Babbitt’s. As can be expected, the conversation got more interesting after wine. I’m not entirely sure how we got onto the subject of prom, but it probably wasn’t my fault; I do remember one of the conversational waypoints involving prom dresses, after all.
This particular phrase my mother shares many may know from the movie “God’s Not Dead,” although the original words come from Psalm 145:9. The actual scripture reads, “The Lord is good to all, and His mercies are over all His works ” However, using paraphrased wording, my mother, along with many others who also share this phrase, helps to make God’s works and words easier to include in our daily lives.
Living simply and slowly, to embrace all the joys we are given, is much easier said than done, but like many other things in life, with practice, simple and slow living does become easier with time.
As many who know me well know, I am a people watcher. I love to sit back at a park, coffee shop, wine bar or anywhere I can and observe those around me. It’s certainly my favorite activity by far. I’ve seen many great interactions and witnessed amazing kindness over the years. I’ve taken some of the best I’ve seen and tried to incorporate that goodness into my life too.
Witnessing someone who has a limitation present,

Another thing I’ve been blessed to witness is some of the happiest people I have encountered walk wherever they can. Honestly, this should come as no surprise as I’ve read many studies that compliment this very idea. However, I’m constantly amazed at what a difference a simple stroll can have on wellbeing. I know I could benefit from a few more steps in my day.
Finally, in an effort to keep this week’s column short and hopefully sweet, I will share just one more observation. Seeing people who’ve removed optional technology from their lives is beyond mind-blowing. I have done this and it was not easy at first; however, without the constant highlight reel visible it’s made my life a lot easier to not feel the push to overextend financially and socially to keep up with the Joneses.

Making it easier to go without than to satisfy my every desire is something I am trying to practice while I am learning to live a simpler and slower life. Now, if only I didn’t like my super sweet, caffeinated lattes so much. Cheers to another blessed day.

Hello, Sauk Centre Herald readers. Hope your summer is off to a good start. With summer comes warmer weather, and with warmer weather comes activities and events outside. The Sheriff’s Office participates in many community engagement events during the summer months and we are hoping to see some of you at them. We have already attended a couple car shows, a touch a truck event and a first responder appreciation event this summer.

Stearns County is a large county, and maybe you already knew this, but we have 23 parades every summer throughout all of our local communities, whether that is at a city festival or a church festival. Our office makes every effort to attend each and every one of them through our Community Sheriff Engagement Team. No matter the size of the parade, we strive to at least have one staff member and a squad car (if not more) in the parade.
Our agency also organizes an event we call public safety in the park where we bring staff and equipment to a park with a local ambulance and fire department to in-
The debt ceiling history
By Skip Manoski, Sauk Centre
I have to admit I was nervous about the debt ceiling negotiations. Both sides compromised and the deal was accomplished … again. However, as we move forward, it is important to know the past negotiations that led us to this point. “Since 1960, Congress has acted 78 separate times to permanently raise, temporarily extend or revise the definition of the debt limit – 49 times under Republican presidents and 29 times under Democratic presidents,” as reported on the US Treasury website.
Under our previous president, Congress passed three

teract with you the citizens. We do two of these each summer. Likewise, we conduct four youth safety camps in the county that bring kids and officers together for activities, lunch and learning about all things safety, like wearing your life jacket, riding your bike safely, bullying and peer pressure among a myriad of topics. One of the biggest community engagement events we do, and one where we might see the most of you, is the county fair in July. We are there every day of the fair, doing meet-andgreets with staff, doing demos or hands-on presentations and giving out fun stuff and handouts on topics related to keeping you informed and safe. Hopefully, we will see many of you at one of the events listed above. To find out more about where we will be or what we will be doing, I encourage you to check our website or join our Facebook page, if you haven’t already. We will be keeping it up to date so you are in the loop on these events, so please stop by one of them to say hi or give us a friendly wave at a local parade. Have a good, safe summer.
We all had a decent collective prom experience between us. I did grow up homeschooled, but I’ve covered several proms during my time with the Herald, and that’s not even mentioning the dances I made myself attend while in college. Anyway, Maggie and I are considering homeschooling our kids – no offense, local educational institutions – but we also think it’d be fun to give them the prom experience. And no, I’m not talking about a dance with just your immediate family; I mean getting together with other homeschooled families and co-ops to throw a party.
Of course, we had to consider the dancing. Having all been from good Christian households, the hoedowns in our lives weren’t famous for dirty dancing. “Leave room for the Holy Spirit” is an old joke about chaperones who enforce a 12-inch distance between waltzing partners. So, did our Babbitt’s discussion seek to do away with such a Puritanical guideline?
Heavens, no. We talked about how to better enforce it. In the raunchy modern age, one cannot be too careful.
Our first ideas involved electromagnets. If we could get the promgoers to wear electromagnetic vests aligned to the same polarity, they physically cannot get within a romantic range without being propelled to opposite ends of the dance hall. While entertaining, this plan carried a lot of risk; all other magnetic metals would have to be removed from people and premises pre-prom, for instance, and any number of sophomoric pranks could stem from giving teens powerful magnets.
That’s when I had an unusually practical burst of inspiration: We have the kids wear bubble soccer bumpers.
I’ll try to explain for those of you who don’t want to Google bubble soccer. The sport is like regular soccer, except the players wear these bumpers that are something like a cross between an inner tube and a giant beach ball, with a transparent construction and handles on the inside. The players lower the bubbles over their upper bodies and grip the inner handles, free to run around and crash harmlessly into each other – and the ground – as they play soccer.
spending bills – in 2017, 2018 and 2019 – that suspended the debt limit. In each case, the debt limit was then raised at the end of the suspension period to account for the cumulative borrowing that occurred during the suspension. This lays out as follows: On Sept. 8, 2017, a continuing resolution – the Continuing Appropriations Act of 2018 and Supplemental Appropriations for Disaster Relief Requirements Act of 2017 – became law. It suspended the debt limit through Dec. 8, 2017. Once that suspension lapsed, the new debt limit was set at $20.5 trillion to cover the amounts borrowed during the suspension.
On Feb. 9, 2018, the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2018 suspended the debt limit again through March 1, 2019. At the end of that suspension period, the debt limit was then reset at $22 trillion to accommodate federal obligations during the suspension period.
The Bipartisan Budget Act of 2019 was enacted Aug. 2, 2019, suspending the debt limit until July 31, 2021. When that suspension lapsed, the debt limit was reset at its level as of Aug. 1, which was $28.4 trillion.
So, under the previous president, the debt increased from $20.5 trillion in 2017 to $28.4 trillion in 2021. That is an increase of $7.9 trillion. That was quite a bit, wasn’t it?
So, it appears that Republicans have raised the debt ceiling almost twice as often as Democrats. And Republicans under the previous president have added the most to the federal deficit for any single four-year term.
That surprised me.
: Classified advertising and Classy Canary advertising are on a cash-only basis. Our ad takers have no authority to bind this newspaper, and only publication of an advertisement shall constitute final acceptance of the advertiser’s order.
Just take that concept and apply it to prom. There is no way the kids will get dangerously close to each other when they’re surrounded by an inflatable bubble. We’d need a wider-than-usual grand march arch, but that’s a small price to pay for parental peace of mind. There are also plenty of safety benefits; falls from a broken high-heel shoe will literally have little impact, and the bumpers’ enclosure and distancing mean prom can continue in spite of pandemics.
What about the fashion, though? Prom is also supposed to have an element of style, which would be hampered by giant bubbles on legs. Well, far from cramping that style, the bumpers would actually add an extra element of glamor. Students could decorate their bubbles so they look like disco balls, jellyfish, hot air balloons or even local water towers. There could be dress contests from the most glamorous to the most comical, and the winner had better be the one who resembles a giant eyeball.
And, speaking of contests, there’s the matter of the prom king and queen. When they are selected, they will be allowed to exit their soccer bubbles – and will then be deposited into royal Zorbs. For those of you who still don’t want to use Google, a Zorb is another beach-ball-like recreational object, only scaled way up and built with a person-sized hollow in the middle; some people get into them and roll down hills for fun. Imagine, then, the joy the prom kids will have as they stuff their royalty into separate Zorbs. The rest of the night, the smaller soccer bubbles can bounce around their Zorb royalty, everybody having a grand old time while maintaining healthy distance parameters.
Finally, this bubble soccer initiative would throw open wide the floodgates of creative prom themes: pinball, bobbleheads, spherical safari, solar systems and more.
Now, the electromagnetic vests aren’t out of the picture; that’ll be our high-end prom plan. Even so, bubble soccer prom has plenty of potential to be the high school celebration of the future – and the bumpers could see use for the seniors not long after their magical night. You see, my next groundbreaking idea is a graduation ceremony with an exit catapult, simulating the graduates’ headlong entry into the unforgiving world, and they’re going to want all the padding they can get.

He was the 11th of 13 siblings and would proudly tell you he had eight brothers and four sisters. The drought years of the early 30s hit family farms especially hard so Ed and his brothers had to leave school to help support their family. He had numerous jobs giving him a broad variety of skills. In 1944, when his country called, although not quite 18, Ed joined the Seabees. Because of his work experience, which included driving truck, Ed was pulled from boot camp to head up a truck battalion. He shipped to Okinawa and ran supplies to the frontline at night. At the end of the war, he moved to Minneapolis to find work. He had several jobs, landing one at which he could work double shifts. He was thrilled and grateful as it enabled him to get himself firmly established. He eventually took a job with Industrial Lumber and Plywood where he began as a truck driver and within four years became the yard foreman until he retired. In 1950, Ed married the love of his life, Verina “LaVerne” Bergmann. They settled in Minneapolis to raise their three daughters. Ed and LaVerne had an indefatigable partnership. They shared

Edwin Conrad Duclos common values and visions for their family and each worked and sacrificed equally to make them a reality. Supporting their daughters’ education was of highest priority. Besides his work at the lumberyard, Ed always owned a business on the side – often piece work he could do in his garage. He had the opportunity to purchase a semi-tractor and three trailers to haul the sawdust from the lumberyard to turkey farms in the Owatonna area. He unloaded the sawdust by hand with a grain shovel year-round. Imagine 100-degree weather, inside a turkey barn, inside a semi-trailer shoveling sawdust by hand. Now that’s sacrifice in pursuit of a vision: his family. And never did you hear him complain. Ed was able to hold his long vision and not let the bumps and detours along the way derail him. He always had an attitude of gratitude.
In 1962, Ed and LaVerne purchased a lot on Big Birch Lake, starting with a small trailer house. At his girls’ insistence, they and LaVerne headed to the lake the day after school let out and did not return until the night before school began, with Ed joining them on weekends. In 1982, Ed and LaVerne built a home on the lake and eventually retired there. They were introduced to Las Vegas by LaVerne’s brother Mel
who taught school there for 32 years. They purchased a home in Vegas and spent their winters there enjoying fishing, the beautiful environment that surrounds Las Vegas and, of course, some gambling. While work was Ed’s MO, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and was strongly connected to nature. He loved just observing what was around him. He enjoyed building and repairing things and could truly make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear. He had a real eye for detail. But what he enjoyed most was being with family. Cutting the grass on his riding lawn mower, work by some people’s estimation, gave him the perfect position from which to watch his family enjoying themselves.
Ed was impeccably honest, always standing in integrity: what you saw is what you got. He listened more than he spoke. Commitment and loyalty were in his DNA. He was kind and generous, always ready to help friends and family. He was compassionate, wearing his heart on his sleeve. Ed had a soft spot for women, children, animals and anyone in need. It pained him to see any sentient being in distress or pain. And he rounded all this out with a great sense of humor.
Ed had a very strong faith which carried him through the tough times. He carried a rosary in his hunting jacket: after all, he said, there is a lot of time spent waiting, plenty of time to pray a rosary or two. He was a lifelong member of the Knights of Columbus.
Ed is survived by his three daughters, Sandy Duclos Field of Minneapolis, Linda (Dan) Barnier of Rogers and
Kim Duclos of Las Vegas; grandchildren Rick (Patty) Barnier of Rogers and Eddie Barnier of Montana; granddaughter Blendy Orellana Andrade (Jamil Orfali) of Austin, Texas; sister Leona Wiehoff of St. Cloud; brother’s-in-law Kenny (Marilyn) Bergmann and Don (Joan) Lambrecht; sisters-inlaw Marie Duclos, Audrey Westbrook, Joanie (Mac) Haws and Janet Gibbons; and nieces and nephews too numerous to mention here.
He was preceded in death by his wife, LaVerne; parents; son-in-law Charles W. Field; sisters Barb (John) Thelen, Marie (Joseph) Zwilling and Sister (Francis) Gudilia, OSB; brothers Anthony (Eileen) Duclos, Alois (Loraine) Duclos, Hubert (Donna Mae) Duclos, John (Alice) Duclos, Joseph (Edna) Duclos, William (Regina) Duclos, Henry (Margie) Duclos and Lawrence Duclos; motherand father in-law John and Hilda Bergmann; sisters and brothers-in-law Irene (Kermit) Lee, Ellen Lambrecht, Darlene (Erv) Schiffler, David (Blanche) Bergmann, Eugene (Regina) Bergmann, Duane (Anna Marie) Bergmann Melvin Bergmann, Loren (Sally) Bergmann, Charles Wiehoff, Thomas Haws, Anthony Westbrook and George Gibbons; and to Ed’s great sadness, too many nieces and nephews to mention.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www. neptunesociety.com/location/ minneapolis-cremation for the Duclos family. In lieu of flowers, donations to www. smiletrain.org are preferred.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
James was born in St. Paul. After graduating from Mechanic Arts High School in St. Paul, he was proud to have served in Vietnam from 1966-68. One of his treasured accomplishments was to earn two Purple Hearts and several other service medals: Army Good Conduct, Vietnam Service Medal with three Bronze Service Stars, Sharpshooter Marksmanship Qualification Badge, Expert Marksmanship Qualification Badge and Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross. Jim was a talented musician, known for Elvis renditions, performed with regional bands in the 70s and 80s, most notably the “Facts of Five” and “Roving Gamblers.” Later, he moved to Sauk Centre and resided on Sauk Lake.
Jim was known to many as “Mr. Lucky.” He was a firearm enthusiast and enjoyed spending time with friends, running into the Felling and Walz relatives, feeding the mallards, playing ball with the dog, constantly making home improvements and shopping.
James J. Felling
Jim had the highest regard for the Police Officers in town and was proud to know all their names. There wasn’t anything Jim and his meticulous self could not fix; his way was always the “right way.” He was talented in many areas: Makita sales representative, optical lab technician and professional locksmith, and he sold cars and campers. Jim enjoyed sharing his musical talents by hosting karaoke at several establishments in town. He was a proud patriot and loved his country. If anyone had conversation with Jim, his passion was clearly evident. Jim served as finance officer in the Little Sauk Legion Post 417 and continued his involvement and promoter of the Legion until his passing. He enjoyed creating and maintaining the Legion website and assisting the Legion and Auxiliary with
their projects. He enjoyed computer technology and being asked by TJ to create and burn the CD for the Sauk Centre Girls’ Softball Team and maintaining the Diamond Point Website. Jim enjoyed singing with son, Tony, spending time with friends and relatives on the lake, boating, poker walks with the “group,” live music, dining out, late hour runs for ice cream, Harley, travel, people watching and following his grandsons’ many sports activities and their other achievements. Jim was accomplished having survived Vietnam and quadruple surgery.
Jim is survived by his
children Anthony James (Becky) Felling of White Bear Lake, Nicole Ann Marie (Chris) Nelsen of Mound and Robert James (Kristin) Thompson of Oakdale; grandchildren Austin, Ethan, Gage, Jude, Valerie, Lauren, Samantha, Isaac and Makayla; sister Kathy (Dave) Jackson of San Angelo, Texas; niece Kristine (Mack) Roller; nephew James (Trina) Jackson; and fiancée Gail Rosenow.
Jim is preceded in death by his parents Clarence and Martha Felling; and nephew Gary Jackson. Thank you for your service to your country Jim. We miss you. H-23-1B
