Hageman, O’Brien

prepare for graduation Special time elicits bittersweet emotions BY JAKOB KOUNKEL | STAFF WRITER

FOLEY – As their time at Foley High School comes to close, Alaina Hageman and Kristen O’Brien are looking back on the experience in an overwhelmingly positive light. From academics to athletics to the relationships developed along their schooling careers, the two standout Foley seniors are amid a bittersweet conclusion. Hageman was elected by fellow students as the FHS 2022 class president, and O’Brien was elected as the Foley chapter’s Minnesota Honor Society president. They are both multi-sport athletes, and considered to be leaders among a robust class of seniors. “They’re incredible students and great representatives of Foley High School,” said Shayne Kusler, Foley High School principal. Hageman’s and O’Brien’s elected duties include service to the senior class, whether that be coordinating and organizing events, representing the best interests of their class, making decisions that will benefit the school, and many other im-

portant responsibilities that can take up time and resources. While the two seniors have enjoyed their time in Foley, both from a community and schooling perspective, they are also excited for what is coming next: graduation, an experience people often fondly remember for the rest of their lives; the senior-year summer, where seniors make every effort to spend as much time with their friends as possible; and life after high school, a daunting and exciting opportunity to further themselves. As they reflect, they cannot help but have reverence for the senior class and all they have accomplished along the way. “Our class is so special because we are made up of a variety of individuals who are determined, bright, creative and adaptable,” Hageman said. “As a result, multiple people in the class have reached high levels of achievement in the past four years with more to certainly come in the future.” One of the points

of emphasis for Hageman and O’Brien are the relationships between classmates. Just like any other class, there are various friend groups that tend to stick together more often than not. But unlike other classes, the various groups of friends often fuse together inside and outside the walls of the school building. “When I ran for junior class president last year, I did it because I love my grade,” O’Brien said. “It’s not even just your really close group of best friends; you can find support from all over the school, and I think that’s really cool.” Hageman said alongside an elite group of students, Foley’s teachers are among the best at their craft, and, maybe more importantly, their personalities made schooling infinitely more enjoyable. “I’m definitely going to miss teachers the most,” Hageman said. “Being in leadership positions, we interact with teachers a lot, so it’s going to be tough when we have to say goodbye.” Hageman and O’Brien agree the graduating Foley senior class – about 130 students – has a unique bond with each other

and their teachers, which is only amplified by the community ties that extend far beyond academia. “Because of the size of our town, our school is so connected to our community,” Hageman said. “The Foley school and the Foley community go hand-in-hand, and the community is always so willing to support us. I don’t think I’ve ever gotten a ‘no’ when we’re asking for support.” The only regret – which was out of the

hands of any one individual in Foley – was their graduation seems too soon because of the coronavirus pandemic that plagued their sophomore and junior years. “One thing I feel like is unique to our grade is, although a lot of us are drained with school work, the majority of people feel our graduation is premature,” O’Brien said. “If you think about it, our only full, normal year of high school was freshmen year.”

O’Brien said it has made the high school experience briefer than it otherwise would have been, but they also believe they handled the unfortunate situation well. Even so, the Foley seniors are bright-eyed as they look to the future. Even if there are some tears as they look on the past, Hageman and O’Brien said they would not trade their high school experience for anything.
