Gerads maintain over 130-year-old family farm

Since before the 20th century, the Gerads family has farmed dairy cattle near Albany and passed down the land through generations. Jason and Lynn Gerads are the farm’s current owners, and, along with the sense of responsibility that comes with maintaining the farm, they also perform their daily work with pride.
“When you stop and think about it, despite how everything here has changed so much over 134 years, we actually still make our living the same way they did in

the beginning,” Jason said. “If the land and cattle don’t produce, we will suffer. I can’t say for certain, but I’d be willing to bet you could count on both hands the number of times someone was hired to do the chores over all of those years.”
was founded around 1890 by Carl Gerads and then passed down to John Gerads, Nick Gerads and Arnold Gerads before him. Jason took over the farm in 2011, the same year he married Lynn. While the farm buildings have been replaced and added over the years, part of the Gerads’ home is the original farmhouse.

While potatoes are cooking, melt butter in a large skillet. Add onion; cook 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until very soft. Add cabbage; cook and stir for 5 minutes more or until very soft. Stir cabbage mixture and Kerrygold cheese into hot potatoes and season with pepper. Mound onto serving plates and make a well in the center of each. Pour a little melted butter into each well, if desired.
