Ritter received a gold placing at the convention. The chapter also hosts a medallion hunt, a teacher appreciation breakfast and a corn jar guessing game. Outside of FFA week, Ritter chaired the committee for tractor day and a petting zoo. “I liked organizing the brining in of the animals to school for the petting zoo so that students can see farm animals and create that producer-to-consumer connection,” Ritter said. BY SARA EISINGER STAFF WRITER
HOLDINGFORD — Among the numerous student organizations at Holdingford Public Schools is its FFA chapter, where a luscious greenhouse and garden grow more than fresh broccoli and colorful petunias. This FFA club cultivates youthful dreams for annual harvest at high school graduation. “People might think FFA is just an elective or a fun hobby that won’t necessarily lead to anything more, but there are so many future careers that these experiences can relate to,” said Taylor Peck, Holdingford FFA adviser. “I did not have that same opportunity growing up, so it is very good for our students.” Bethany Gerads, a class of 2023 FFA alumni and scholarship award winner, serves as a shining example. Gerads is now studying agricultural
business at Ridgewater College in Willmar. “I learned a lot about crops in my (high school) classes,” Gerads said. “Growing at our high school was a unique experience. I learned everything I know through that program, and there are just so many job opportunities in the field of agriculture.” Potential career choices could include agricultural engineering, farm management, sales, commercial horticulture and the list goes on. Raised on her family’s small farm just outside of Albany, Gerads was not new to feeding calves and milking cows. She was, however, a little new to planting fruit, vegetables and flowers. “I didn’t know how to garden at first,” Gerads said. “I started growing at the greenhouse when I was in ninth-grade. Me and a couple other students would come in during the week, and alternate weekends in the

summers.” Gerads’ thumbs turned green in no time. “We grew a lot of cucumbers, broccoli, zucchini, tomatoes and onions,” she said. “We even grew watermelon last year.”

Gerads recalled one of her proudest moments as a senior in high school last year. She watched as classmates enjoyed a type of squash many would have otherwise refused — zucchini. “Kids in my school were not huge on zucchini,” Gerads said. “Our lunch ladies were super awesome. They would always find ways to add it into their recipes. It was cool watching everyone enjoy what we grew.” Gerads and her best friend, Marissa Hartung, eventually managed the school’s greenhouse together. Like Gerads, Hartung also received multiple FFA chapter awards over the course her high school career. “It was cool getting to run the greenhouse with Marissa,” she said. “We have always planned on having our own greenhouse one day.” Whether or not the best buds fulfill this high school dream is a story yet to be told. One thing is certain, agricultural roots have been
planted, and similar dreams continue to flourish within Holdingford’s FFA chapter as sophomore Jaden Ebnet and others proudly carry its greenhouse and garden into the future. “This is my second year in FFA, and my first year as a greenhouse manager,” said Ebnet, who plans to pursue a career in agronomy. “I am most excited about being able to garden. I am excited to plant in spring and grow until flowered out and ready to sell.” The school’s FFA chapter typically involves anywhere from 30 to 40 seventh to 12th-grade students each year. “FFA members typically do more complicated work,” Peck said. “Since transplanting new seeds can be a fragile process, the club usually takes over. They even receive training in fertilization.” Come Mother’s Day weekend 2024, all of the FFA club’s hard work will pay off. Floral arrangements and plants will be ready for public sale. Collected proceeds help fund the Holdingford Public Schools FFA chapter’s present and upcoming educational activities.

MELROSE — Grace Herdering, Melrose FFA Chapter reporter, brought a new project to the chapter’s officer team this holiday season. And, the event exceeded the chapter’s expectations. “We had 244 toys, which is a lot more than we expected,” Grace said. … “I’ve seen a lot of advertisements for Toys for Tots around the area, and I thought it would be a cool fundraiser to do.” Grace’s brother, Sgt. Luke Herdering, was
the catalyst for the idea. Luke has been with the Marine Corps Reserve Unit and Marine Wing Support Squadron 471 in Minneapolis since returning from active duty in 2019. He has also volunteered with the Toys for Tots program for over three years. Luke suggested the Melrose FFA Chapter help with the holiday drives. “Knowing the community, knowing the people, almost everyone knows at least one person in the FFA, and I thought that was a great way to start something up,” Luke said. “I am hoping it (the Toys for Tots drive) grows from there.”
Gretta Kasper, Lila Kimmes and Carson Middendorf. Each officer received at least two boxes to place at businesses of their choice while carefully considering where got the most foot traffic. Boxes were stationed for a month period between mid-November and mid-December. “Then she (Grace) made posters saying where the boxes are,” Carson said. Along with spreading the word throughout the school community, Grace also made social media posts, hoping to reach more people.

Tell us about your FFA involvement. I joined FFA as a senior in high school. The chapter was really kicking off and gaining momentum at the time. I participated in the Companion Animal Science Career Development Event and really enjoyed it. What was the highlight of your FFA career? The highlight was doing my first contest and prepping with other students. How did your experiences within FFA influence your career choice? I knew I wanted my career to be in agriculture. I joined to help me gain more knowledge before heading off to college. Tell us more about yourself. I grew up on a farm by Avon. We raised beef, chickens, turkeys and horses. I went to the University of Wisconsin-River Falls and majored in agricultural business. I minored in crop science. What is your current career? After I graduated college in 2016, I started working for Centra Sota Cooperative, managing their Sauk Centre Country Store location. I have been there since. My responsibilities include marketing products, ordering and stocking feed for a variety of animals and customers, planning retail displays and sales, administration work, coordinating social media posts, farm visits with nutritionists, training on new feed technologies and taking care of customers. Every day is different. I have a lot of flexibility, which I love. I also farm with my sister and brother-in-law. We raise hair sheep, beef cattle and pigs.
Tell us about your FFA involvement. I was involved in FFA from 1993-97. I joined FFA because most of my 10 siblings were involved in FFA. I participated in a lot of the social events and attended meetings but never held an office or did any contests. Now the tide has turned, and I am more involved with the FFA Alumni Association and by covering the Minnesota State FFA Convention and National FFA Convention & Expo as a broadcaster. What was the highlight of your FFA career? It was the friendships. Back then, everybody grew up on a farm. That was our thing — to hang out together within the FFA. It was a great way to get to know the upperclassmen and meet other farm kids. How did your experiences within FFA influence your career choice? It made me appreciate agriculture more. Listening to other kids and what their plans were, such as going back to the farm or pursuing agriculture degrees, really opened my eyes to the pathways within agriculture. Tell us more about yourself. I grew up on our family’s dairy farm near Albany. It is in operation today as a third-generation farm. I knew I wanted to go into radio, but it wasn’t until after I got into radio that I found out I could combine my two interests: radio and agriculture. I also finish out calves at a rented facility nearby, which has now become my hobby. In high school, I didn’t want anything to do with farming, but now, I want to be as involved as I can. What is your current career? I am the farm director at KASM radio in Albany. I will have been with the station for 24 years, later this year. I manage and direct all the farm content. I do the morning show and the mid-day show. I report on daily news and market reports.

Tell us about your FFA involvement. Bob joined FFA as a freshman, and Lori joined as a sophomore. They continued their involvement until graduating from high school. They participated in contests and in the Supervised Agriculture Experience. Growing up on a dairy farm, Bob chose to dedicate his time to dairy judging, and his SAE was about raising dairy replacements. Lori, who grew up on a mainly crop farm, participated in the horticulture and forestry contests. She completed an SAE in landscaping. Bob held the vice president position for two years. He obtained his State FFA Degree by completing the objectives associated with his chapter involvement. Lori focused on horticulture, which led her to attend college at the University of Minnesota-Waseca. She graduated with a two-year horticulture degree. Today, they are involved with FFA as members of the Holdingford FFA Alumni to continue their support for agriculture education programs and the local chapter.
Tell us about your FFA involvement. I was in FFA from 2004-08. One contest that I remember trying was the general livestock judging contest. Our chapter participated in the parliamentary procedure contest. The chapter did a lot of events throughout the year. Yearly, a group of the members participated at the Ridgewater College vet tech competition. Our chapter sold fruit as a fundraiser. During National FFA Week each year, we would have a variety of activities. One that stands out is having a faculty member kiss the pig. I held the office of treasurer for two years and was vice president my senior year. What was the highlight of your FFA career? I enjoyed attending the chapter meetings. The chapter meetings usually had an activity or food to go along with the meeting itself. I also enjoyed attending the state convention every year at the University of Minnesota campus, especially my senior year, knowing that is where I was going to attend college at.
What was the highlight of your FFA career? FFA provided chances for meeting others while participating in contests or attending conventions. They learned organizational skills and team work from the many opportunities FFA offered. Highlight opportunities were Bob receiving his State FFA Degree and attending state convention and national convention. For Lori, the national convention was a highlight as well as being successful in the horticulture/forestry contests.
How did your experiences within FFA influence your career choice? I had a great FFA advisor, Ellen Thompson. She helped me not just with FFA, but she was very encouraging to assist in my career choice by writing reference letters and always being positive. She was a great mentor to me. Additionally, FFA helped me gain public speaking skills. I learned how to conduct meetings. It started to help me gain confidence in speaking in a group setting.
How did your experiences within FFA influence your career choice? FFA provided a foundation in agricultural that both Lori and Bob followed after they graduated high school. Bob attended the technical college in Willmar as a production agriculture student, and upon graduating, he returned to his family’s home farm where he and Lori have been livestock and crop farmers for 43 years. During those years, they began with dairy and hogs and transitioned to being contract broiler chicken growers for 32 years. Lori obtained her degree and then transferred to the University of Minnesota-St. Paul campus to complete a four-year degree in vocational technical education-ag education. Their FFA experiences provided them with insight, development and a basis that influenced their career choices.
Tell us more about yourself. I grew up on a dairy farm near Sauk Centre. I am the oldest of six children. We all had our responsibilities on the farm growing up, which, looking back, was great. It helped us develop a good work ethic. My siblings were also in FFA. My parents and two youngest brothers are on the dairy farm. I am married to my husband, Dean, and have two children, Aaron and Elaine. What is your current career? I am a veterinarian for the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service at Long Prairie Packing. I make sure the cattle that come through the facility are safe to enter the food supply chain. I maintain my license and do general practice on my own, mostly at my parents’ dairy farm. My youngest brother always seems to have a list for me to do, such as pregnancy checks, vaccinations, the occasional surgery and consulting.
Tell us more about yourself. Bob and Lori grew up on farms in the Avon area. Both attended Holdingford High School which gave them the opportunity to participate in athletics, arts and FFA. After high school, they went different directions while continuing to maintain a relationship. After college, they married and moved to the Yurczyk family farm near Avon where they currently reside. Bob began his farming career in partnership with his parents. At the same time, he was a seed sales person and crop consultant for 28 years and then transitioned to being a crop insurance adjustor for the past 12 years. He was active on the Stearns County Pork Producers and Central Minnesota Forage Council boards. Lori worked off the farm as they raised their son and daughter. She worked for more than 30 years in farm management, greenhouse retail sales and the financial/banking industry. She also spent many years serving on township and county planning boards.
