Master gardener shares her favorite blooms BY ELLARRY PRENTICE STAFF WRITER ST. CLOUD – The name perennial translates to “through the years.” For gardeners who want blooms to return year after year, perennials are a go-to. And for gardeners who want blooms that can be kissed by the sun, Jean Januschka Ebnet has some recommendations. Januschka Ebnet is a University of Minnesota Extension Master Gardener who shared her favorite sun-loving perennials at the University of Minnesota Extension Gardening Knowledge event Feb. 12 in St. Cloud. Her presentation featured photos from hers and other master gardeners’ gardens. When selecting perennials that grow in sunlight, Januschka Ebnet said it is important to note the description full sun implies six or more hours of direct
you are looking at your garden in the early spring, it may not be a true reflection of how much sun you get in the summer,” she said. Perennials generally live two or more years. Some perennials, such as peonies, last many years, while others, such as tulips, are short-lived. Januschka Ebnet said the lifespan of a perennial is also dependent on the cold hardiness zone in which it is planted.

Watab prepares for road projects Pothole repair also on township’s spring to-do list BY ELLARRY PRENTICE STAFF WRITER SAUK RAPIDS – Watab Township is gearing up for multiple road reconstruction projects. Three of the reconstruction projects, estimated to cost about $750,000, are set to occur on Sucker Creek Road, Sharon Place and Indian Road. The total cost with engineering fees and the township’s share of a co-occurring project to rebuild Sucker Creek Bridge is estimated to be about $900,000. The township will advertise for bids for these projects, and the scope of the work will be reviewed at a public
informational meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 29 at Watab Town Hall, 660 75th St. NW, Sauk Rapids. Bids will be opened in the latter part of April. The township has issued a $3.395 million bond to fund these and other needed road projects over the next five years. From 2023-26, road projects will also take place on West Lake Road, West Lake Court, Sues Road Northwest, Lakewood Shores Road Northwest, Shoestring Loop Northwest, Sanbur Trail Northwest, 15th Avenue Northwest, Burton Place Northwest, Ivy Place Northwest and Ferry Point Place Northwest. Road work will also take place in the
Lake Andrew housing development this year in conjunction with storm sewer and drainage improvements. Township engineer Kevin Kruger met with the Lake Andrew homeowners association and said residents approved of the plans. The streets in the Lake Andrew housing development were never accepted by Watab Township and therefore were never maintained by the local road authority. Lake Andrew residents will be responsible for all costs of improving the streets and storm sewer to bring them up to township standards. Watab will choose whether to accept the roads after the repairs.

in division finals
Nick Richert was not going to let injuries dictate the end of his NA3HL career. The Granite City Lumberjacks’ leading scorer returned to the lineup in time for the Fraser Cup divisional playoffs and made an impact in every single West Division playoff game. However, his divisional finale might just be his magnum opus. The St. Cloud native rose to the occasion in the third game of the division finals against the Mason City Toros and scored a hat trick in Granite City’s 6-2 win March 20 at Sports Arena East in Sauk Rapids. The win launches the Lumberjacks to the Fraser Cup Finals in St. Peters, Missouri. “I just went in there and didn’t think about it,” Richert said. “It’s my last year. If I get hurt again, it is what it is. I just wanted to give it everything. I didn’t want to let up at all.” After losing out

Nick Mountain completes a pass while being checked March 20 at Sports Arena East in Sauk Rapids. Mountain logged an important third-period goal in Granite City’s 6-2 win. on an earlier chance to advance with a 3-1 loss in game two, the Lumberjacks were ready to play under the immense pressure. The line of Luke Delzer, Hayden Walters and Brett Reed found goals on back-to-back shifts in the first period, giving the Lumberjacks a 2-0 lead. “It was good to see them find early success in a big game for us,”
said D.J. Vold, associate head coach. “Coming down the stretch this week, we’re going to need them.” Mason City, the reigning Fraser Cup champions that brandish a 33-13-1 regular season record, were not fazed by Granite City’s electric start. It took the Toros less than a minute to respond with a goal of its own, and the West contenders tied the

game with a power-play goal with six-and-a-half minutes remaining in the first. “We knew this wasn’t going to be easy,” Vold said. “We knew we would have to earn this.” And earn the win, they did. Richert received an appetizing rebound off a Jacob Hicks scoring chance and buried it for the Lumberjacks’ gamewinning goal at 14:36 in the second period. “I saw Hicksy shooting it, so I figured he was shooting far-pad and I was waiting for that, and he did,” Richert said. “It went far-pad and their defender was in front of me. It just happened to slip through his feet.” Not many leads are safe in hockey, and the Lumberjacks took that to heart in an actionpacked third period, scoring three goals to put the game away. Nick Mountain scored his second goal of the playoffs, while Richert snapped home a pair of goals, including an empty-net tally. “After it got to 2-2, we plugged away really well,” Vold said. “(We) were awesome in the third period and shut the door on them.”

The Minnesota Twins have signed free agent shortstop Carlos Correa. I cannot believe I wrote that sentence. Correa was the consensus top free agent in this year’s class, and he agreed with the Twins on a three-year, $105.3 SPORTS COLUMNIST million contract with BY ANDY THAYER player options after each of the first two seasons. Teams with massive budgets like the Yankees and Phillies had glaring weaknesses at the shortstop position, and I’m in shock Correa chose the small-market Twins as his landing spot. After the dust settled and ink dried, it appears there were a couple of factors that played into the Twins’ hands as this deal developed. The free agent shortstop class was loaded this offseason. Some of them, like Corey Seager, Marcus Semien and Javier Baez, signed to big deals prior to the Dec. 1, 2021, lockout. When the new collective bargaining agreement was ratified March 10, teams started moving quickly to finalize their rosters. There was apparently less of an appetite for long-term, bank-breaking deals. Correa’s contract was a huge win for the Twins, who added a culture-changing player without a long-term commitment. That said, it’s also nice for Correa. His $35.1 million annual salary is the highest ever for an infielder, and he will have the option to test the free agent waters again next winter in what will hopefully be a normal offseason with less direct competition at his position. Correa has also played exceedingly well at Target Field throughout his career. He has a 1.205 OPS in 70 plate appearances in Minneapolis; although, let’s be honest, a big part of that is because the Twins have not had the best pitching throughout Correa’s seven-year career. That said, there’s no better place for a right-handed slugger to establish he deserves a market-defining contract than Target Field, and it was smart of Correa and his agent, Scott Boras to engage with the Twins. Correa finished fifth in American League MVP voting last year, slashing .279/.366/.485 with 26 homers and 92 RBIs while winning a Gold Glove at the most important defensive position. In fact, he won the Platinum Glove for best overall defender in the American League. To put it simply, Correa is going to improve the Twins significantly both offensively and defensively. To make things even more delightful, the Twins directly hoodwinked the Yankees to make this deal happen. The Yankees were pursuing Correa themselves, but by trading for Josh Donaldson and assuming the $50+ million remaining on his contract, the Yankees allowed the Twins to free up enough payroll to swoop in and sign the top free agent from right under their noses. It’s an exciting time to be a Twins fan. This signing proves this team intends to compete after a rough 2021 season, and it gives fans hope the team will sign marquee free agents in the future if the terms are reasonable. The Twins are never going to run payrolls like the Red Sox, Dodgers, Mets or Yankees, but the Correa signing shows they shouldn’t be lumped in with penny-pinching teams like the Pirates, Guardians, A’s or Orioles, either. The Twins signed the top free agent in all of baseball this spring, and that’s a refreshing concept.
