Parents: Jonathon Broman and NiCole Broman
Accomplishment: Senior hitter on the Sauk Rapids-Rice volleyball team.
What do you enjoy most about being on the volleyball team? I enjoy the team aspect of volleyball. Everyone is supportive even when you make a mistake. And there’s always someone there to cheer you up if you feel bad about a play or feel like it’s not your night. I like having a support system that’s always ready to help you.
What has been the highlight of your volleyball career? Getting my first kill on the varsity court.
What other activities are you involved in at school or in the community? Basketball, track and field, Link Leaders, Minnesota Honor Society (treasurer), Green Team (vice president), FFA, Storm Leaders, and I have hopes of being involved on the culinary team. As for community service, I volunteer at the Tri-County Humane Society.
What life lesson has being involved in activities taught you? Life is going to be hard and unpredictable at times, but you need to persevere and keep trying. Never give up. It has also taught me how to work with others, how to expand my leadership skills and the rewards of working as a team.
What SRR teacher has made an impact on your life? Mary Levinski. She is always there to lend a listening ear and always finds a way to bring a smile to your face if you’re having a bad day. She is amazing at balancing fun and hard work and makes you excited to go back to her class the next day. I’m so very lucky Mary Levinski was my teacher, and I look forward to having her again this year.
What board or yard game is your favorite to play with friends and family? Cornhole is my favorite yard game to play with my friends and family. Growing up, my cousin and uncle would have competitive cornhole games which got me to find this game exciting to play with family. I enjoy playing this game with my friends because we are less competitive, and this allows us to laugh and have a fun time.
What is your dream job? A large animal veterinarian. I have always wanted to work with animals. I enjoy working with large animals more than small animals because they fascinate me more, and there seems to be less large animal vets than small animal vets.
If you could travel anywhere for free, where would you book tickets to? Europe. There are so many places to visit in Europe and so many historical landmarks there too. You could spend almost all your time in one place. There’s so much to see. I also feel like Europe is rich with history, such as the Beaches of Normandy, the Anne Frank Museum and concentration camps. Those historical places interest me,

How many years have you worked in the manufacturing industry? This is my first manufacturing job, but I started in 1999. So, 23 years.
Tell us about your work at Ferche Millwork. I bring in the blank, or squared off piece of wood, and we have it set up so the knives hit all the way down the wood to shape it into a casing, stop, baseboard, handrail, etc. I do a lot of little runs on my machine. Our department, which consists of about 22 people, satisfies small orders. Usually, the mini mill is providing wood for us because we don’t need as much wood at one time. I typically work with two other people at my machine.
What is one thing you would tell people about the manufacturing industry that they may not know? It is a commitment; you have to realize you are going to be working hard. It’s not an easy job. But, it’s rewarding at the end. It’s definitely a lot of work, but there is good teamwork involved.
What is one thing you enjoy about your job? I like my coworkers quite a bit, and if we get a really tough profile, or something we haven’t run before, it elevates your mood if you get it right. You complete tasks multiple times a day, which is nice. It helps you get through the day for sure.
Ferche Millwork produces hardwood mouldings and veneered millwork. The company, which is located at 400 Division St. N. in Rice, was founded by Bob Ferche in 1958. Today, they employ 107 people, including eight people in Tennessee.
Hometown: Sauk Rapids
How many years have you worked in the manufacturing industry? It’s been 16 years. I started in July 2006; we were Talon then, and now, we’re Ichor Systems. I was a carpenter before this. So, I started as a machinist and worked my way up to a lead and supervisor.
Tell us about your work at Ichor Systems. My duties are to ensure all the machinists have what they need on a day-to-day basis. I’m basically supervising and making sure the products being manufactured on each individual machine are running on schedule. I may have to manipulate schedules a bit dependent on demand; I may have to move jobs to different work centers or different machines to ensure efficiency.
What is one thing you would tell people about the manufacturing industry that they may not know? It’s stressful (laughing). We are very busy especially in the semiconductor industry. We have people coming in on holidays and everything. It’s different from some other manufacturing areas. We don’t have a lot of downtime; the industry is growing consistently.
What is one thing you enjoy about your job? I enjoy working with all the machinists; I work with a lot of great guys, great women too. That’s what I most enjoy about it – working with the people, being in touch and building relationships with my machinists.
Ichor Systems is a global company that designs, engineers and manufactures key elements used in semiconductor manufacturing. The Sauk Rapids location at 1003 Industrial Drive is one of two manufacturing facilities in Minnesota; the other is in Osakis. Ichor Systems is headquartered in Fremont, California, and has locations in five states and three continents. The company has over 2,000 employees.
PPE for
In the hustle and bustle of harvest it is all too easy to forget your personal protective equipment. It gets left on the kitchen table, inside the front door or on the passenger seat of the farm truck.
PPE is there for you to use to protect your skin, airways and vision, just to name a few. Using the right combo of PPE, when necessary, can help control the uncontrollable. This article can act as a reminder of both the big and small hazards on your operation and what you can do to keep yourself, your family and those around you safe.

All part of theHoner herd
Family open hearts to animal variety
BY GRACE JEURISSEN | STAFF WRITERBeing part of a pack of wolves usually means they are all wolves. But for the Honer herd, every being has a place, big or small, hairy or scaley.
For the Honers, animals have always been part of the family, even before they moved to a small farm site in rural Stearns
County.
“My parents were always supportive of having animals for my sister and I to care for,” Donna Honer said. “We had rabbits when we lived in town – a lot of rabbits. What this property did was just allow us to share our love for animals on a larger, more diverse scale.”
Honer’s parents, Scott and Toni Honer, though not growing up with a heavy rural background, stressed the importance of responsibility of animal care to both Honer and her sister, Ava. Because the girls had
been showing rabbits for some time before expanding the variety of animals under their care, they knew just how much work it would be to care for more.
Honer noted that because of her parents’ open hearts to animals and willingness to absorb the pets of others, they often took back rabbits they sold if the families did not want the responsibility of caring for the animals they had purchased.
Honer page
Sissy the goat likes to follow the family around the farm yard. She often plays with the cows out in the pasture.
Honer from page 1B
After moving to their small farm site in 2010, the rst large animal purchase was a horse. Both Honer and her sister had longed to have a horse to ride and care for.
“I was a crazy horse girl,” Honer said. “I wanted a horse so bad. The thought behind getting this place was for us to have the space to have more animals and to give us girls a wholesome country living experience.”
The Honer family knew the work and nances that it would take to care for their many pets would be a challenge, especially for young girls.
After the horse came the chickens.
“Chickens are like potato chips: You can’t just have one, you have to have a whole bunch,” Honer said.
Today the Honer farm is home to a horse, a donkey, 14 cows, two goats, an emu, 30 laying hens, 30 quail, seven ducks, 10 turkeys, 12 rabbits, six cats, a dog, a pheasant, a bearded dragon, a Pacman frog, two Red-footed tortoises
and one guinea pig.
The biggest rule for the Honers is all of the animals have to co-exist. They cannot be worried about one ghting with another, especially with so many animals to give individual care to already.
One of the coolest animals the Honers have had at home were resident Vietnamese pot belly pigs that was housed in the basement until they grew heavy enough to withstand Minnesota winters.
“The pigs were super cool, and the one lived to be 8,” Honer said.
“When we put them in the barn with a big straw
pile, they burrowed little dens in the straw and when we cleaned it out in the spring, we saw one of them had stashed all of his corn cobs in his little den. He didn’t even eat them.”
The animals are another element to many of her joyful memories growing up on the farm.
Not long after Honer was old enough, she began working for a neighbor farm family. She milked cows at the organic dairy not more than a half mile down the road from her house.
