SAUK RAPIDS HERALD | SATURDAY, DECEMBER 25, 2021 | Page 3
Rothstein from front Decorating his parents’ home won him the St. Cloud Jaycees Christmas light contest when he was 16. “I have cherubs on the peak of my house with lights behind them,” Rothstein said of one of his oldest decorations. “They show up like a silhouette; I must have been about 15 when I made those. I have been doing woodworking my whole life. It has been a hobby of mine since I was a kid.” Around the same time, Rothstein also built and painted three life-size carolers that still stand in his yard today. “My inspiration for the carolers came from a magazine page,” Rothstein said. “My dad and I went to his print shop. We put the page from the magazine on the overhead projector, shined it on the wall, put up wrapping paper, and sketched the carolers about 3.5 feet in diameter.” After the carolers were drawn, Rothstein cut them out on plywood and painted them black. He also placed spacer blocks on the back of them, which allowed him to run lights behind them and create a silhouette appearance. “My favorite pieces are the cherubs and carolers,” Rothstein said. “People ask how many times I have repainted the carolers; I say, ‘I haven’t.’” When Rothstein painted the carolers, the only paint they used was oil enamel. The quality of the enamel paint allows the colors of his carolers to shine as brilliant this year as they did when he rst painted them 50 years ago. Rothstein also constructed scenes of Santa’s workshop and a Nativity, and he has constructed ways to place his string lights strategically across his yard so no area goes unlit. Arti cial trees are made by building triangles from two-byfour. “I have about 50 of them in the yard this year, with miniature lights strung on them,” Rothstein said. Rothstein is also fond of classic blow mold display pieces. “I must have about

20-25 plastic blow mold snowmen,” he said. “Many you cannot buy anymore. Years ago, they were around $20 to purchase; today, they are at least $100.” With over 170 pieces in his yard and around 25,000 lights, Rothstein gathers ideas for his pieces from looking at Christmas cards for inspiration. He draws pieces before bringing them to life with his woodworking talents. “I light up my entire yard and a few feet over the neighbors (line),” Rothstein said. “The whole front yard is set up, both sides, and the back yard as well. It takes about 20 hours to set up.” The most important part of creating the display for Rothstein is not the amount of lights in the yard, but rather how he uses them. “You can throw lights here and throw them there, but you need to have a color scheme and creative style,” Rothstein said. “That is what makes the lights look better.” Rothstein sets up his display in eight sections – each section belonging to one electrical circuit. “It goes up in sections and goes down in sections,” he said. “Everything is boxed; all the lights in the boxes are marked for where they belong in the yard and everything you see in my yard goes in the attic of the garage.” The display arrangement is not the only part of the light display which has changed. Over the past ve years, Rothstein switched all of his lights from incandescent to LED. Each year as winter approaches, Rothstein can be seen untangling a maze of cords before Thanksgiving. By Dec. 1,
his display is complete. Rothstein leaves his display lit until Dec. 29. “Then, I pack it all up because when the new year is here, it is over,” he said. Weather impacts the display’s aesthetic. “When it snows, the cords are all covered and you do not see them,” Rothstein said. “It is a whole new look once there is snow on the ground.” Rain negatively impacts the display, and Rothstein faced this issue head on about a week ago. “I had extension cords that were shorted
out and three zones that would not light,” Rothstein said. “I had to disconnect everything in that zone and one by one plug in each extension cord until I found the one tripping the breaker. Each Christmas season, Rothstein rearranges his display and adds new pieces. This year he switched the Santa’s workshop and carolers around. “Wait until next year,” he said. “I will have another 12-15 pieces next year. I already have them drawn out and everything.” For Rothstein, the smiles his lights bring are the most important part of the tradition. From locals who stop by to take pictures to the little neighbor boy who fell asleep in his chair on the front steps of his house watching Rothstein put up his display, he does this for other people. “The little boy liked the color red, so I added extra red Christmas lights,” he said. “Our new neighbor likes blue, so I added blue. It is a joyful time for all who see the display; I like to say I am kind of the hidden gem.”
