The Art of Resilience Starr’s second century relies on the ability to demonstrate the same resilience shown by the children and families we serve All people have strengths. The ability to thrive lives within all of us. For more than 100 years, Starr has used this principle when working with young people, helping them reach their potential.

celebration and performed for guests. Speaker Mario Bonds also shared his inspirational story of resilience and success, even performing with young people to finish the program.

Foundational to Starr’s services is the Circle of Courage®, a philosophy pioneered by Starr and used around the world. The core values of belonging, mastery, independence and generosity shape the circle, forming a continuum of universal needs that are essential for everyone to flourish.

As Starr continues to navigate its second century, growing our reach and impact, the theme of resilience and the Circle of Courage will guide us. Like the children, families and communities we serve, Starr is resilient.

Beginning with the Starr Summer Youth Festival in August 2014, Starr embarked on The Art of Resilience project. Including more than 40 youth arts groups from Detroit, the festival was an illustration of the talent and strength young people possess despite difficult circumstances in the city.

“Unfortunately our society sees some people as disposable, but Starr does not. Starr takes in kids who need an opportunity. They really see that there is value in everyone and direct them to where their talents lie.”

Continuing with Founder’s Day 2014, several of the young people who performed at the festival came to Starr’s anniversary

Inherent in the Circle of Courage is the message of resilience — the ability to overcome adversity and emerge stronger than ever.

meeting families where they are Through in-home, community-based and center-based services from Battle Creek to Detroit, Starr is rapidly growing across Michigan

The newest addition to Starr’s community-based care is PsychSystems, a behavioral health organization founded in 2001 that serves children and adults with developmental disabilities and neurological differences. PsychSystems joined Starr in 2013 and brings experience in behavioral health, including anger management, social skill training, individual therapy and behavior assessments. Primarily serving clients in southeast Michigan, PsychSystems, along with Starr Battle Creek, allows Starr to provide in-home services to most of southern Michigan.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that 1 in 68 children have autism. But families can be put on waiting lists of longer than a year just for assessments. The PsychSystems Autism Center is able to get this process completed in as little as 30 days, allowing trained autism technicians to start delivering Applied Behavior Analysis treatment, the gold standard in autism care, in a timely manner. As the trend toward community-based and in-home care continues, Starr will be continuously evaluating its programs with an eye on providing the most relevant services.

At Starr Detroit, a wide range of programs are offered, from a youth assistance program that helps young people with academic and social needs to supervised independent living. An outpatient substance abuse program is also available using The Seven Challenges curriculum, a nationally recognized treatment method.

To meet the growing needs of children and families living with autism, Starr and PsychSystems opened the PsychSystems Autism Center, which is located in Harper Woods, Michigan.

For decades, Starr has served the Battle Creek and Detroit communities through community-based programs. In Battle Creek, the in-home mental health program works with hundreds of children and their families each year, helping to avoid out-ofhome placements and keep families together.
