STEEP IN HISTORY
Where Motorsport Stars are groomed SINCE 1993, the CIK Stars of Karting Championship presented by Castrol EDGE has played a significant role in developing the careers of Australian motorsport stars. A number of former Champions have gone onto greatness in Australian motorsport while others have starred on the World motorsport scene. Today, names like Jamie Whincup, Mark Winterbottom, Daniel Ricciardo, Ryan Briscoe, Tim Slade and Michael Caruso are all household names in the wider motorsport community. It wasn’t so long ago that these young drivers were battling each other on kart circuits across the country chasing the elusive Championship. For Whincup, his first Championship came in 1998 in the Intercontinental A Class. During that year Whincup was simply dominant and claimed maximum points in three out of the four rounds. Finishing second to him in the Championship was Caruso, who the year prior had won the KF3 (formerly known as Junior Intercontinental A) title. In 1999 Whincup moved into the KF2 (formerly known as Formula A) class and the rivalry that is now played out in the V8 Jamie Whincup
Junior Podium at Ipswich in 1996 (L-R) Alan Gurr, Ryan Briscoe and Troy Hunt
Supercars Championship began. He and Winterbottom were joined by Victorian Clint Cathcart in a threeway battle for the Championship before Whincup’s consistency aided him to secure the title in Australia’s elite Championship for the second consecutive year. Two years later Winterbottom would enjoy Championship success in the CIK Stars of Karting Championship when a pair of round wins from the four events secured him the same title Whincup had won in 1999. This would be the tenth, and final, Australian Championship of his illustrious karting career before he embarked on his pathway to the V8 Supercar Championship. Better known these days for his racing career in America, Briscoe was a two-time Junior Champion in the Series during the mid-nineties. This feat has only been matched by Kristian Lindbom and more recently (2010 and 2011) Pierce Lehane. It is the same title that has also been won by 2014 Walkinshaw Racing driver Tim Slade, former Dunlop V8 Series Champion Andrew Thompson, Kristian Lindbom and Christian Jones.

2013 IN REVIEW
Hays wins the battle, Hanssen the war! FOR the second consecutive year, Chris Hays was victorious at the final round of the CIK Stars of Karting Championship presented buy Castrol EDGE, but it wasn’t enough to stop Joey Hanssen from taking the title to the Netherlands. In taking the title, the 21-year-old Dutchman becomes the first international racer to win a CIK Stars of Karting Championship. After dominating the heat races, Hanssen confirmed his stranglehold on the John Pizarro Trophy in the first final at the final round - his seventh final victory of the 2013 season. In the second final though, Hays took it to the 2011 World Cup Champion before speeding away with his second round win of the year aboard his Energy Kart. The win by the outgoing Champion ensured that he was the only driver to inflict a defeat in a main event on Hanssen throughout the 2013 championship. “Consistency is definitely the key to winning championships, we had a few issues throughout the year but it’s great to finish the year with another win, but it was Joey who was the most consistent this year,” said Hays The battle for third in the Championship was the major on-track interest in KZ2 with John Grother, Kel Treseder and Jason Pringle all fighting it out.
Grother - who switched to an ART GP chassis for the final round - recorded fourth and third placed results to secure third in the Championship despite a valiant effort from Treseder. Liam McLellan etched his name in Australian karting history as the KF3 Champion alongside the likes of 2014 V8 Supercar driver Tim Slade and IndyCar driver Ryan Briscoe. Entering the final round second in the standings, three points adrift of James Abela, McLellan needed to be right on top of his game during the final round. Abela’s podium finish in the final round ensured that he held on to second place in the championship while Andrew Kahl secured third place in the title chase with a fifth placing in Melbourne. In KF2, Matthew Waters started the final round as the points leader, however George Geranis was keen to show up the Sydney-sider on his home track. It wasn’t
to be, with Geranis spinning heading into turn one in the final race of the year. Queenslander Troy Loeskow came into the event third on points with a mathematical chance at winning the Championship and then went on to win the first final before also dominating the second. Geranis’ turn one spin elevated Loeskow to second in the Title should he remain in the event. He rocketed to the front ahead of Pierce Lehane and was a chance to take the Championship should misfortune hit Waters. It wasn’t to be though with Waters coming home sixth, in doing so he etched his name on the James Courtney Trophy alongside the reigning Bathurst 1000 Champion Mark Winterbottom and five-time V8 Supercar Champion Jamie Whincup and will receive a $10,000 scholarship to compete in an international CIK event.

Karting is where the racing starts KART racing is considered by many to be a young person’s sport, however, it has been proven that it is also one that can be enjoyed by people of all ages – the young and the young at heart. The youngest drivers, in the Cadets category aged between 7 and 11 years, will reach speeds of up to 90 km/h. While karting for these kids is more about fun than winning championships the sport teaches them, both boys and girls, about car control long before they are able to obtain their road licence. Along with the skills they learn on the track, karting teaches these children a lot about being responsible for their own actions, respect for other competitors and is also an opportunity to bond with their families. For some of the younger generation, the sport can also provide a foundation as they aspire to build a motorsport career - a prime example of this is the fact that every V8 Supercar and Formula 1 driver on the grid in 2014 started their career in a gokart. While the sport can teach children many valuable lessons, age is no barrier when it comes to
kart racing with Karting Australia having active members well past sixty years of age. There are many categories to cater for a variety of age, weight and budget capacities within the Karting Australia. While the youngsters start out in the Cadet, Rookie or Junior National categories - depending on their age, senior drivers (over 16) have several options as an entry level category including Clubman, National and TaG Restricted. The TaG Restricted class has been the most popular entry-level category over the past few years. Drivers in this class compete aboard a kart powered by a restricted 125cc engine. This class was introduced to allow less experienced drivers to race electric start, water cooled engined karts at restricted performance and has proved to be a great way to introduce new people into the sport without the high levels of competitiveness experienced in some other categories. To get involved in the sport visit Karting Australia’s website www. karting.net.au to locate the details of your nearest club.
