When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving the world in a state of crisis. With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

Originally released in 1979, the first film in the series brings together all the stars of the television series. Set in the 23rd century, a mysterious and immensely powerful alien cloud is approaching planet Earth and destroying everything in its path. Admiral James T. Kirk (William Shatner) resumes command of the U.S.S Enterprise to lead a mission to save the planet and determine the origin of the mysterious cloud.

Considered by many fans to be one of the best in the franchise, The Wrath of Khan is widely credited for renewing substantial interest in the series in the early eighties.

Star Trek Generations marks the first big screen outing for Captain Picard and the crew of the U.S.S Enterprise-D. In an inspired time-travelling plot twist, Picard finds himself battling a mad scientist (a scene-stealing performance from Malcolm McDowell). Only the legendary Kirk can help him, but he’s been dead for 78 years…

Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the crew of the newly commissioned Enterprise-E battle the insidious Borg who attempt to invade Earth’s past and alter history. With time travel, a dazzling new Enterprise and fantastic direction by cast member Jonathan Frakes, First Contact ranks as one of the best Star Trek films. The intelligently handled plot also includes a surprise revelation which heralds an important chapter in the ongoing story.

Director J. J. Abrams, 2009 127 minutes Starring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg, Leonard Nimoy, Eric Bana J. J. Abram’s 2009 re-boot, chronicling the first meeting of a young James T Kirk and Mr Spock at Starfleet Academy, delighted fans and critics alike. The two new recruits instantly clash. As they embark on their first space mission they quickly realise that they’ll need to overcome their differences if they are to survive a vengeful visitor from the future. It’s a brilliant big screen experience packed with action, humour and spectacular visuals. Newcomers to the franchise will find themselves drawn into the world of Star Trek and there are enough knowing references to keep even the most hardcore fan happy.

With J. J. Abrams once more at the helm, Into Darkness is an explosive space thriller. It’s also notable as it features the final performance of Leonard Nimoy as Spock before his death in 2015.

Directed by Robert Wise, the film originally had a budget of $15 million, though this eventually ballooned to $46 million - the biggest budget for any film made in the US at the time.

Captain Kirk embarks on what seems a safe enough mission: restoring life to decaying lunar landscapes. But the project is jeopardised by the arrival of arch-enemy Khan, who has escaped from a 15-year exile to exact revenge on Kirk. Spock contemplates making the ultimate sacrifice to save his crewmates, beginning a story arc which continues in the third and fourth films.

Director Leonard Nimoy, 1986 118 minutes Starring William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, James Doohan, Walter Koenig

Director William Shatner, 1989 106 minutes Starring William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, James Doohan, Walter Koenig, Nichelle Nichols

Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country [PG]

For The Search for Spock, Leonard Nimoy takes over the directing reins - the first cast member to do so. With a change in tone from the earlier films and a more philosophical approach, Nimoy’s direction was widely praised and The Search for Spock remains a fan favourite.

It’s the 23rd century, and a mysterious alien power is threatening Earth by evaporating the oceans and destroying the atmosphere. In a frantic attempt to save mankind, Kirk and his crew must time-travel back to 1986 San Francisco where they find a world of punk, pizza and exact-change buses that are as alien as anything they’ve ever encountered in the far reaches of the galaxy.

The U.S.S. Enterprise crew embarks on the ultimate voyage searching for answers to the mysteries of the cosmos.

Director Jonathan Frakes, 1998 90 minutes Starring Patrick Stewart, Jonathan Frakes, Brent Spiner, LeVar Burton, Michael Dorn With Jonathan Frakes once again taking directing responsibilities, the ninth film in the series finds Captain Picard and his crew questioning orders from Starfleet. When they learn of a Federation conspiracy against the inhabitants of a planet with mysterious powers, Picard begins an open rebellion. Despite receiving mixed reviews on its initial release, there’s still plenty to enjoy in Insurrection with Patrick Stewart once again commanding the screen as Picard. There are fantastic special effects which, for the first time in Star Trek’s history, were completely computer generated.

Director Stuart Baird, 2002 116 minutes Starring Patrick Stewart, Jonathan Frakes, Brent Spiner A generation’s final journey begins when Captain Picard and the crew of the Enterprise encounter a monstrous alien race. A diplomatic mission to the Romulan Empire ends in battle when Picard comes face-to-face with his most dangerous adversary yet. Picard and his crew must risk everything to prevent this sinister villain from destroying Earth.

Admiral Kirk’s defeat of Khan and the creation of the Genesis planet are empty victories. Spock is dead and McCoy is inexplicably being driven insane. A surprise visit from Spock’s father provides a startling revelation: McCoy is harbouring Spock’s living essence. Kirk attempts to help by stealing the U.S.S. Enterprise and defying Starfleet’s Genesis planet quarantine. But the Klingons have also learned of Genesis and race to meet Kirk in a deadly rendezvous.

Once again directed by Leonard Nimoy, The Voyage Home is the most popular of the classic Trek films and was a box office smash on its release in 1986.

On its initial release the film received mixed reviews and according to its producer nearly killed the franchise. In retrospect, the film looks a lot more substantial than those early reviews might lead you to believe. With novice director William Shatner at the helm, the interaction between the central trio of Kirk, Spock and McCoy is up there with the best of the films and it’s often funny and genuinely insightful. Don’t miss this very rare chance to experience The Final Frontier on the big screen.

Director Nicholas Meyer, 1991 109 minutes Starring William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, James Doohan, Walter Koenig, Nichelle Nichols The crew of the Enterprise prepare themselves for the unimaginable: peace with the Klingons who are on the brink of disaster after a major catastrophe. But can they really be trusted? With director Nicholas Meyer back at the helm, The Undiscovered Country is a return to form for the franchise with a classic blend of space opera, taut plotting and engaging interaction between the stalwart characters. The film took the original cast out in style before handing over the reins to the new crew in Star Trek Generations.

FESTIVAL EVENTS Star Trek: The Motion Picture Panel Discussion Monday 25 July 6.30pm Join us before the screening of Star Trek: The Motion Picture as a panel of critics and experts discuss the film and the impact the Star Trek franchise has had on other science fiction films and television series over the past 50 years. They’ll also discuss their own memories of seeing the Star Trek films for the first time.

Dr Nick Lister Wednesday 27 July 7pm Dr Nick Lister is the Principal of Lawrence House Astronomy & Space Science Centre in Fleetwood. He is one of the rising stars in UK astronomy. Join him for a fascinating look at the cosmos and boldly go to the outer fringes of the known universe!

Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock How Star Trek Saved My Life Friday 29 July 3pm

Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock is a space scientist and a science communicator, but this just seemed a distant pipe dream when she was growing up. Suffering from dyslexia and placed in the remedial class at school, her dream of one day reaching the stars was fuelled by Star Trek. She was mesmerised by how an international group of explorers could travel the galaxy having breathtaking adventures. This inspired her to study science and obtain a degree and PhD. Now, with her work, she boldly goes into the universe building instrumentation that helps us understand what is out there. But Star Trek still plays a role in her work. With the discovery of exoplanets which are planets orbiting distant stars, and the continued search for life in the universe, are there things that Star Trek can teach us today about life, the universe and everything?
