Club ditches sponsor over toxic plan

Loud and clear By Ewen McRae Legal action could be the next step for the Bacchus Marsh community, as resistance to plans to bring contaminated soil to the region grows. A March 10 rally at the Village Green on Main Street attracted up to 1500 people, many of them carrying signs and chanting in protest of plans by Maddingley Brown Coal to store and process contaminated soil from the West Gate Tunnel Project. Among the speakers at the rally was hexton Lawyers principal lawyer Glenn hexton, who pledged to work with the community. “You can take action and your action will make a diference,” Mr hexton told the rally. “You are not powerless, and you can be supported in a formal manner, and that’s what I’m prepared to do.”
Mr hexton said the community could look at taking out an injunction to stop toxic soil coming to Bacchus Marsh, but following the rally he was unable to conirm what steps the community had planned next. A GoFundMe page has been set up to help cover the ongoing campaign, including prospective legal costs. More than $5500 was raised in the irst three days. Meanwhile, Moorabool mayor David Edwards said last week’s rally showed the community would not be silenced on the issue, and again called on MBC to provide technical information about how the soil would be stored and processed if it won the tender from Transurban. “he big turnout at this week’s protest rally sends a very clear message: don’t take Bacchus Marsh for mugs,” Cr Edwards said. “Residents are alarmed about the lack of transparency and
openness and want and deserve answers from those seeking to store, categorise and dispose of contaminated soil close to our town. “Council shares the community’s concerns and is calling for greater transparency from all the parties involved in this proposal, including the Victorian government. “hose advocating for this have only themselves to blame for awakening a sleeping giant. Council and the community have been let in an information vacuum. “he proponents have been given every chance to provide key technical reports to council and they have declined all requests. “Without these reports, how can council and the community have any conidence that the verbal assurances being given by Transurban and its partners, government agencies and others are supported by evidence that has been independently peer reviewed?”

Bacchus Marsh Soccer Club president Liam Kiely said the club’s decision to sever ties with Maddingley Brown Coal was “sensible”. he Scorpions terminated their sponsorship arrangement with MBC on March 5, ending a three year partnership. hey have since re-paid the sponsorship dollars to MBC. “At the end of the day, we’re a community sports organisation promoting health and wellbeing, and we couldn’t continue to accept sponsorship from MBC,” Mr Kiely said. “We met as a committee, did our research on this, and I’m not going to say that there wasn’t plenty of debate, but we decided this was the right thing to do. “We have contacted MBC and given them a chance to talk to us, and their only response was to send us their bank account details.” he $3000 sponsorship made up roughly 40 per cent of the club’s sponsorship for the 2020 season, however the club has since been inundated with ofers from other residents and businesses, as well as Bacchus Marsh Grammar. “Typically a Facebook post for us would reach 200 people, but our post about ending the sponsorship has reached over 7500,” Mr Kiely said. “We’re now pretty close to announcing a new sponsor, and we’ve been amazed by the support we’ve received from the town. Ater the rally I can understand more why people are angry and it just reinforces that we’ve made the right decision.” Mr Kiely said he hoped more groups in Bacchus Marsh followed the soccer club’s lead. “It’s a very hard decision,” he said. “hey sponsor a lot of things in the town, whether it’s sporting clubs, the hospital, whatever, and each organisation is going to have to make their own decision, but personally any other organisation that I’m involved with I will be pushing for the same decision as the soccer club.” Ewen McRae

Scrapping for a greener future typical Melton council household was food and garden material. Melton mayor Lara Carli said diverting waste away from landill would make a big diference. he new policy comes on the back of recent state government announcements that all Victorian households would have four bins to help with recycling. “Each of us has the potential to halve the amount of waste we send to landill by simply throwing our food scraps and garden clippings into the green bin,” Cr Carli said. “It’s an easy step towards a greener future.
“We’ll not only be reducing greenhouse gas emissions and relieving pressure on landill space, we’ll also be helping to create compost that gives back to the earth.” Council has started a ‘FOGO’ (Food Oganics, Garden Organics) campaign to educate the community about what will soon be accepted in the green kerbside bin, with pop-up information sessions running until July 11. Tabcorp Park general manager Gayle Harvey said it was shaping up as another massive event. “It’s very important for us, and one of our favourite events of the year,” Ms Harvey said. “We’re really proud to have this event, because it was a bold move to move it from Moonee Valley when they did, and we’ve embraced it and brought it into the local community, and we love that. “It’s not one of the biggest group one nights, as far as the racing goes, but it is
a great night because there’s lots of good races and lots of awards, and it’s about supporting the local community and local businesses.” Up to 3000 people are expected to come along on the night, with a number of attractions away from the track as well. “It’s a council-run event, and council arranges a lot of local businesses to come along on the night,” Ms Harvey said. “On top of that, we will be holding a night market with a number of stalls to encourage the community to come along, and we’ll also have some food trucks, entertainment, and an ater party in the sports bar which will be lots of fun. “It’s also a great night of racing, and it’s a very kid and family-friendly event every year.”

he Melbourne Airport rail link has been touted as a “game changer” by Brimbank council, but if it’s not done right it’ll cause headaches for years to come, a leading rail advocate has warned. he state and federal governments appear increasingly likely to ditch the idea of a dedicated airport tunnel from the city to Sunshine and instead use existing metropolitan tracks via the new metro tunnel. Rail Futures president John Hearsch said that move would create numerous issues across the west. “For a start travel time will blow out. We’d estimated you’d be able to get out to the airport from Southern Cross station in about 18 minutes via a tunnel, by cramming trains onto congested tracks we’d conservatively have that number at 31 minutes,” Mr Hearsch said. “he plan, once complete … is to have trains come through Sunshine and go on to Watergardens, Sunbury and Melton once the Melton line electriication is complete. “By adding trains to already jam-packed lines, we’re majorly impacting what this project can deliver. “Something has to give somewhere and we’re hearing that the electriication of the Melton line may now be deferred for some time. “If we get this wrong, we’ll be living with the consequences for many, many years.”

Melton council has increased its push for upgrades to Melton station, with the state government yet to commit to funding much-needed improvements. A major upgrade of stations on the Ballarat line was completed last year and included large-scale upgrades to Rockbank, Bacchus Marsh and Ballan stations, while a new station opened at Cobblebank. However Melton station, which sits in the middle of those four stations, has remained untouched. Councillor Bob Turner moved a motion at the last council meeting to write to Public Transport Minister Melissa Horne to push for the upgrades. Council engineering services manager Sam Romaszko said getting the station upgraded was a priority project for council. “Council is writing to the minister to make it clear that this upgrade is greatly needed,” Mr Romaszko said. “Local commuters regularly contact council regarding Melton station, with most inquiries relating to parking, safety, lighting and amenity. “We understand the community concerns around the Melton station and its upgrade is among the projects council is asking the state government to prioritise for funding. “Making Melton station a more accessible, safe, and convenient station is a high priority for council and will make a signiicant diference to the many residents who regularly commute to work and study.” In a recent RACV survey on commuter satisfaction at train stations Melton recorded a score of 5.32 out of 10, compared with Ballan (6.83), Bacchus Marsh (6.76), and Caroline Springs (6.65).

New sports grounds lagged By Ewen McRae A number of multi-purpose sports ields could be added to a Fraser Rise sporting precinct, under a plan from Melton council. he City Vista Sports Precinct already has four soccer ields, and is the current home of Caroline Springs George Cross and Western United football clubs, but a vacant space between the two car parks has been earmarked for the new ields. he site – which is opposite Springside West
Secondary College – was assessed by council oicers following a motion from councillor Kathy Majdlik at the February council meeting, with the recommendation to develop the space for a multitude of sports. At the March 2 council meeting, a resolution was passed to consult further with the community on the project, with oicers recommending that three multi-purpose synthetic courts be constructed on the site. he courts would then be used for soccer, basketball, futsal, and general recreation,
with oicers estimating the project will cost $623,000. Cr Majdlik said she wanted to get more information on the needs of local residents, but was supportive of the move to develop the space. “I am not fully convinced that all the options have been brought back to my attention from my residents, she said. “I don’t want us to be conined to just three courts, but open ourselves up to all options. If ater consultation it remains the three courts then that’s ine, but I want to keep our options
open. Cr Steve Abboushi commended council for utilising all available space for recreation. “To fully activate all the spaces we have is great, he said. “If we do that, residents can’t say we’re not using our spare space. City Vista has gone through massive transformation, but having a space that people can just go to and use without having to go through clubs or schools is great. Following consultation, the project will be referred to the 2020-21 council budget for consideration.
Girls get active A new series of events to get more women active locally has launched in Melton. As part of a statewide health campaign called ‘his Girl Can Week’, Melton council is hosting a four-week program of free, fun and inclusive sport and itness activities for those returning to exercise or wanting to try something new. A recent VicHealth survey showed that 52 per cent of Victorian women worry about being judged when exercising and 41 per cent are embarrassed or intimidated when exercising in public. he campaign aims to get women to focus on how being active makes them feel rather than what they look like or their level of itness. Melton mayor Lara Carli said the program was designed to cater for all abilities, ages and interests, and encouraged women across the municipality to get out and give it a go. “Getting back to the gym, starting a new sport, or simply walking around your neighbourhood should only be about how you
want to feel physically and mentally, Cr Carli said. “You don’t need to be a star player or a itness expert. We’re creating safe spaces to have fun getting active, try something new, and maybe even discover a new passion. he activities will include all abilities boxing, HIIT classes for teenagers, and mother/ daughter football ‘come and try’ sessions. here will also be classes in yoga, golf and self-defence, parkrun sessions and more. he free program of events kicked of this week and will take place across the municipality until April 11. melton.vic.gov.au/thisgirlcan Ewen McRae

Everyone that comes in walks out with a smile on their dial.

17 March 2020 Melton City Council Community News
What’s your favourite local business?
Mayor’s Message
Cr Lara Carli I attended my first Council meeting when I was just 12 years old, so it’s fair to say my passion for local politics and the community, were there from a very early age. That memory has always remained strong, which is why I encourage local residents to do the same, and come along to one of our Ordinary Council meetings.
Melton City Council wants you to name your favourite local shop, eatery, service provider, trade business, creative company and more, with nominations for the 2020 City of Melton Business Excellence Awards now open. If you know an outstanding business in the City of Melton that delivers high quality services or products, goes above and beyond for customers and clients, or shows great innovation, then let us know. It only takes 60 seconds to nominate – all we need is the business name and a few details from you.
but these must be received in writing by 5pm on the day of the meeting. To find out more about Council meetings, go to melton.vic.gov.au/councilmeetings To celebrate VicHealth’s This Girl Can Week, Council is hosting a four-week program of free, fun and inclusive sport and fitness activities for women and girls who are returning to exercise, or wanting to try something new.
From a Council perspective, Ordinary Meetings give us a chance to engage with the community in a more formal environment, to gain a better understanding of the issues that affect our City. For residents, Ordinary Meetings are a great chance to gain valuable insight into Council’s decision making processes, and become more engaged and informed.
Running 16 March to 11 April, activities include all-abilities boxing, ‘come and try’ football, yoga, golf, self-defence, park run sessions and more.
Meetings are held every month, February to December, and alternate between Melton and Burnside. Residents are invited to ask questions,
Please contact me about Council issues on 0409 951 020, email: lara. carli@melton.vic.gov.au or at facebook.com/Cr.LaraCarli
So, if you’re looking to get active again, or try a new sport, the This Girl Can program is creating safe spaces to have fun, and reignite your passion for physical activity. For more info, visit melton.vic.gov.au/thisgirlcan

Businesses are also strongly encouraged to nominate themselves. Nominated businesses will have the opportunity to officially apply and be considered for one of 10 highly regarded awards, as well as the Mayoral Achievement Award and the Business of the Year Award.
Local businesses are an important part of our community, and I’m sure we all like to support our favourite shops, restaurants and tradies.
The awards, listed below, will be presented at the Awards Gala Dinner at Tabcorp Park in August.
Businesses employ local people and support clubs across the City, which is why Council is proud to celebrate the achievements, innovation and creative spirit that thrives within our City, through our annual City of Melton Business Excellence Awards.

Many residents will be aware the Kurunjang Tennis Courts in Centenary Avenue, have been undergoing an
extensive upgrade lately. New courts and lighting are being installed, along with fencing and drainage. The upgrade is scheduled to be finished in late April, and is a great outcome for the local community. To find out more about local infrastructure projects, visit melton.vic.gov.au/majorprojects Finally, local pet owners can now conveniently register their new pets, or renew their existing pet registrations, online. Cats and dogs aged over three months need to be microchipped and registered, with renewals due on 10 April each year. Lions roar into decider
Centrals fail to ire in inal
By Tara Murray
It was a day to forget for Melton Centrals in the Cricket Victoria Women’s Community Cricket north-west B one-day grand inal. Looking for their irst one-day title and second overall, Centrals went in as favourites against Coburg. While they had lost just one game for the year, Centrals couldn’t continue that form on Sunday. Centrals captain Candace Hulett said it was one of those days. “We didn’t bat well and we didn’t hold our catches,” she said. “One girl made 100 and we dropped her four times. hey bowled really well and we didn’t bat well and nothing went right.” Coburg made 3-153 before bowling Centrals out for 64. While disappointed with the result, Hulett said there were still plenty of positives to come from the year. “Only being our third season in the competition, a lot of girls have only played one or two years,” she said. “To make it to our second grand inal is a really good efort. For most of the year we were the team to beat and the benchmark all season. “his only adds to the hunger.” Hulett said the focus would be to continue to get young girls into the program and develop their skills. Darley stood up under the heat to win a spot in the Ballarat Cricket Association grand inal. Having gone through the season undefeated and with their best player overseas, the Lions knew that it wouldn’t be easy against East Ballarat in a semi inal. Despite not getting what they would have liked with the bat, the Lions fought hard and were able to come away with the victory. Lions coach Brian Wheelahan admitted all the pressure was on them. “It was a great efort and we’re still alive,” he said. “It was a true inals game and with the season on the line the boys were able to execute and get the win. “We’re never out of the contest and I’m proud of them again.” he Lions batted irst and made 174 ater being bowled out in the 70th over. Wheelahan said he would have liked a 200-plus score. “We got of to a great start and the openers were terriic,” he said. “We were 1-120 and Anthony Taylor was great and Harry Killoran had got a start. “We lost a couple of clumps of wickets, which was disappointing to get rolled out for 178.” Wheelahan said day two presented another good day of cricket. “hey were 1-80 odd and cricket is a funny game and it can turn. “We got a couple of wickets and turned the game on its head. he supporters would have loved being there.” he Lions bowled East Ballarat out for 165 to seal the victory. Madushanka Ekanayaka took four wickets for the Lions to be the pick of the bowlers. he win puts the Lions into the grand inal, as they search for a irst XI premiership for the irst time.

SPORT Eagles’ remarkable turnaround continues Twelve months is a long time in cricket for Eynesbury in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association. Last season in the Johnstone Shield, they won just one game in a tough season for the club. Now as we enter the inal weekend of the season, the Eagles are set to host the Jensen Shield grand inal. Eagles captain-coach Tristian Francis said they would have never imagined that they would be in a grand inal this season. “We were happy to string a few wins together and have an enjoyable season,” he said. “We didn’t think it would be possible to be in this situation. “It’s a diferent situation from getting buckled every week.” Francis said the key to the development of the side was the young kids who were coming through. While they struggled at times last season, they all played key roles in getting the team to
the grand inal this year. “Josh Oldield stood up with the ball and Josh Francis has bowled well all year. “Cody McLaughlin is another one. hey are all young kids who have stepped up.” he Eagles made 220 as they were bowled out in the last over. he Eagles top order batted well and were 2-118. But the Eagles collapsed, with their lower order struggling to make an impact. Justin Siedlecki (62) and was the last man out. Scott Oldield also made a half century. Tristian Francis said having been in such a good position early, they probably could have had more on the board. “It was under par,” he said. “We were looking at 280 to 300. We were one down at tea, before losing 5-12. “Justin stood up and batted through until the second last ball.” Siedlecki getting out was a blessing for the Eagles, as it meant they had three overs to bowl
at the end of the day. hey managed to get the wicket of Corey Beatty, who has scored more than 500 runs this season, just before stumps. Francis said having Beatty back in the sheds gave them plenty of conidence going in overnight. “Once we got that wicket we thought it was ours.” With minor premiers Diggers Rest Bulla losing, the Eagles are the highest ranked team let, and with it comes a home grand inal. hey will face Romsey, who upset the Burras. he grand inal is the irst for the club since it made the switch to the GDCA. Before this year, they had only played one inal in this competition. Tara Murray Justin Siedlecki was the star with the bat for Eynesbury. (Shawn Smits) 203262_04
Storm ights back By Tara Murray For a second straight week, Sydenham-Hillside has shown its ighting qualities in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 3 Roy Picone Shield. his time round, it has put the Storm in the ideal position heading into the second weekend of the four day grand inal against Williamstown Imperials. he Storm claimed a irst innings victory late on day two. Storm head of cricket Bob Kunesevic said while they were thrilled to be ahead on the irst innings, they know there’s still a couple of days of hard work to go. “We’re pretty happy, but we know there is still another weekend,” he said. “he boys have worked hard, especially this week. Willy is a quality side, an exceptional side.” he Storm were sent in and it was slow going on day one, as they inished 7-111. hey would add another 39 runs early on day two, and were bowled out for 150. Kunesevic said it wasn’t an easy day to bat. “We got sent in and we probably would have bowled as well,” he said. “here was a bit in the deck. We knew we had 80 overs to bat on day one and try and get a respectable total. “If we could push our batting into day two, we would be okay. We were hoping to grind out 180-190 and make a game of it. “We got about 40 runs on day two to give us a mark. We thought was it enough, who knows?” Skipper Ben Green top scored with 42. he Storm started slowly with the ball, with the Imperials putting on 42 for the irst wicket. Ater that they kept getting wickets, leaving the Imperials needing 30 runs with three wickets in hand. In a similar position to the previous week, the Storm found something else and were able to ight back. Kunesevic said the closeness of the group and the experience of playing together for a number of years really showed through in those moments. he Storm got the last three wickets to bowl out the Imperials for 127. Kunesevic said it was a couple of their leaders that stepped up. “Alston Bobb was fantastic,” he said. “Alston did what Alston does and he took ive wickets and was all class. “hey were 0-40 and Ben Green brought himself on and made them play at everything and got a couple of wickets. “He gave us a chance.” 16 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY Tuesday, 17 March, 2020

Despite sitting in a good spot, the Storm aren’t going to take things easy with the game still on the line this weekend. Kunesevic said they know that the Imperials
have a quality bowling attack that they can’t take lightly. “he boys will be positive,” he said. “hey will take it ball by ball and over by over.”
Bacchus claims title he move to the Bowls Victoria pennant competition has proved the right one for Bacchus Marsh, as it claimed the division 2, section 1 premiership. Having won the Central Highlands Bowls top grade last season, Bacchus Marsh decided to make the move to the metro competition. While there was talk whether they were in the right division, Bacchus Marsh let their bowls do the talking. On Sunday, they claimed a convincing win against Port Melbourne in the grand inal. Bacchus Marsh president and player Phil Minniti said it was good to have claimed the title. “We had a great win over Port Melbourne,” he said. “By 20 shots overall. “Bowls Victoria did the right thing for us in putting us in the division they did. Other clubs around us thought we would struggle. “hey didn’t understand our heart or depth. We showed what we could do and have now won two grand inals in a row in two diferent competitions.” Bacchus Marsh’s weekend started on Saturday, with a semi inal win against Deer Park (2). Having lost to them in the inal round, Bacchus Marsh turned the tables, winning 102-56 with three of the four rinks having wins. hey then faced Port Melbourne in the grand inal the following day, where they won 83-63. Like the day before, they won three of the four rinks. Minniti said they were in control all day. “Dan Willis got of to a lyer and we controlled it from there,” he said. “Port’s loudest and best player was quiet all day as Troy Williams’ rink did a brilliant job.” he win seals promotion into division 1 for next season. hey still play next week as they look to take out the overall division 2 title. “It’s a whole new challenge,” Minniti said. “We keep proving people wrong and hopefully we can keep it going next year.” Bacchus Marsh is looking to try and bring another one or two sides across to the pennant competition, pending the approval of Bowls Victoria. Winning night for Greg Sugars at Tabcorp Park Myrniong-based driver Greg Sugars had the magic touch in the sulky on Saturday night with a winning four-peat at Tabcorp Park Melton. Among his triumphs on the nine-race card were two for trainer-wife Jess Tubbs and others for Emma Stewart and Clayton Tonkin. Sugars and Tubbs struck early with stablemates Huli Nien and Larajay Macray, which scored decisive wins in the DNR Logistics Vicbred Pace (1720m, 4YO+) and Alabar Vicbred Pace (1720m, 4YO+) respectively. For Huli Nien, the victory was his 11th overall and backed up a recent win at Maryborough in late February, while for Larajay Macray the sixth career triumph ended a long run of outs which spanned back to August last year. Sugars then took aim with Stewart’s returning star Major Times, which scored a fresh victory irst-up since a second placing in the Breeders Crown Championship (4YO

entires and geldings) of August 2019. “He’s had a couple of good trials, but it’s never the same as match itness,” Sugars said ater the win in the Allied Express Pace (2240m, NR 85-99). “He was very impressive. We know he’s a top-class, tough sort of horse when he’s right
and that was pretty good.” Major Times had to work in the early stages to eventually ind the lead and ran along in solid time before shaking of runner-up War Dan by close to three metres. he victory, in a mile rate of 1:55.1, was the son of Art Major’s 14th from 32 career starts. Sugars then made it four for the night when he lited Tonkin’s Out To Play over the line in the Pridmore Electrics Pace (1720m, NR 77-84). Sugars parked back in the ield from barrier eight and then came with a sweeping three-wide run down the back straight, which proved just too good for runner-up Franks Very Much, which was beaten close to two metres. he victory, in 1:53.3, followed a gallant ith in the Group 1 Chariots of Fire behind Lochinvar Art a few weeks ago and takes the horse’s record to seven wins from 16 starts.
Season over for Bacchus By Tara Murray Bacchus Marsh was outplayed by a better side in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup. Facing the undefeated minor premiers Gisborne, the Bulls had a task ahead of them over the weekend. he Dragons showed their class as they were able to have a comfortable win and secure a home grand inal. Bulls captain-coach James Lidgett said in the end, Gisborne were the better team over the weekend. “It wasn’t what we were ater today, but they were awesome,” he said. “hey are a well drilled side together and to be honest they outplayed us.” Gisborne elected to bat and were sitting at 3-50. Lidgett said they hadn’t bowled particularly well despite picking up the wickets. he Dragons two leaders, Jarryd Vernon and Jason Wilson, put on 136 to turn the game in their favour. he Dragons inished with 9-242. Lidgett said ater a poor start they were able to bring the Dragons back. “hey were going at four an over early on, but we were able to bring it back to three an over which was a really good efort. “Ian Spiteri and Jack Powell bowled 30 overs each, bowling the majority of overs between them. “On our day we would be able to get that total, 240 wasn’t out of reach.” But Sunday wasn’t the day for the Bulls, as they fell well short of the total, bowled out for 169. Lidgett said they didn’t have anyone put their hand up and ight hard for the runs. Lidgett top scored with 72, having made the majority of the early runs. He was quick to praise the Gisborne’s bowlers. “hey bowled really well and put a lot of pressure on, which achieved a lot of wickets.” Gisborne will now face Diggers Rest Bulla in the grand inal. Lidgett said he hadn’t relected on how the season went, as being coach he was still worried about the other sides they had in grand inals. hree other teams, including the second XI, will play in grand inals this week, while their under-15s won a premiership on the weekend. he outcome of the second XI’s Johnstone Shield semi inal against the Sunbury Kangaroos put a smile on Lidgett’s face. Having made just 134, the Bulls were able to defend that, with the two teams inishing a tie. As the Bulls inished higher on the ladder, it was enough to get them a second straight grand inal spot in that grade. “It was really good for them to defend that,” he said. “hey [Sunbury] needed three runs with two
“He’s a hard horse not to love, really,” Sugars said. “He’s got a beautiful nature, he’s a good looking fella, he’s fast and he ticks a lot of boxes. He’s good to be part of.” Sugars said it was basically just Out To Play’s class that got him over the line on Saturday night. “He still had to put up a pretty special performance because he was giving them a big, big start and they’ve run great sectionals,” he said. Trainer-driver husband and wife Andy and Kate Gath enjoyed a winning double with Eureka (Hyland Sportswear Pace, 1200m, NR 60-69) and Majestuoso (Garrards Trot, 2240m, NR 70-85), while Stewart also claimed a double when Freddy Funk took out the Hygain Claiming Pace (2240m) to register his third success on end. Burras through to McIntyre Cup grand inal Diggers Rest Bulla is hoping to turn the tables on Gisborne in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup grand inal. he Dragons taught the Burras a lesson the last time the two teams met, but the Burras are conident they can come away with the premiership. Burras playing coach Rasika Batepola said they had been conident at the beginning of the year that they had the team to go all the way. On the weekend, they proved too strong for Sunbury United. Batting irst, the Burras made 7-281 from their overs. Indika Massalage top scored with 81, but the key was contributions throughout the order with ive players reaching at least 20. “It was a team efort ater a good opening stand,” Batepola said. “he middle order clicked around Raveen Yaas, while Warren Berry anchored the innings with 37 not out.” Batepola said they were more than happy with that score, having aimed for about 250 to 260. He said the key for them was to get Dilan Chandima out early, which they did. United looked good at 1-102, but their middle order struggled and they were bowled out for 202 in the 67th over. Batepola said Rhys Berry, who took three wickets, was the pick of the bowlers, while Kevin Barker, who also took three wickets, did a massive job holding up one end. “heir middle order tried really hard, but we were able to inish of the game really well.” he win sees the Burras in their irst McIntyre Cup grand inal since the 2015-16 season. On that occasion, they tied with Gisborne, which won the premiership having inished higher on the ladder. Batepola said they know if they play their best they can get the job done. “It’s really good, we’ve got two out of the three sides in grand inals,” he said. “We won at Gisborne last year and hopefully we can do the same thing this year. If you want to win the lag, you need to win these sorts of matches.”

Mercedes pulls out the big guns By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring Two new Mercedes-AMG models featuring the world’s most powerful 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine in series production are on their way to Australia. he Mercedes-AMG A 45 S 4MATIC+ hatch and Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 S 4MATIC+ four-door coupé not only turn up the power but have been thoroughly redesigned. “We have completely redesigned our 45 models – from the engine and transmission through the chassis, the elaborately constructed drivetrain to the body structure and of course the design itself – all with one goal: to raise vehicle dynamics and the sporty driving experience to a level previously unimaginable in the compact class,” said Mercedes-AMG chief executive Tobias Moers. he engine generates 310 kW of power and 500 Nm of torque and transmits it to all four wheels by way of an AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT-8G transmission with eight ratios and gearshits measured in milliseconds. he hatch sprints from zero to 100km/h in just 3.9 seconds, the coupe takes an extra tenth due to it being a little heavier, but 4.0 seconds is still pretty quick. Both models feature an extensively reinforced bodyshell with a lightweight aluminium plate bolted beneath the engine to increase front-end torsional rigidity. Further reinforcement supports the suspension system. his results in highly precise responses even at the physical limits, giving the driver clearly deined feedback, plus less rolling and pitching on bends, when braking and during load cycles. he AMG RIDE CONTROL adaptive damping system is itted as standard, and enables the driver to choose between three diferent suspension control modes, from

comfort-focused to sporty. he system automatically, adapts the damping forces for each wheel according to the driving situation and road conditions. he high-performance braking system ensures fade-resistant deceleration and short braking distances, with six-piston ixed callipers and 360 x 36 millimetre brake discs at the front and single-piston loating callipers with 330 x 22 mm discs at the rear. he discs are internally ventilated and perforated to better dissipate heat and prevent brake fading, even
with extreme use. To let others know your Mercedes-AMG means business the brake callipers are painted red with a black AMG logo. Visual features are an AMG-speciic radiator grille with a wider lower contour and 12 vertical louvres; wider front guard; lared wheel arches. he front apron has what AMG calls a “jet-wing” design.
