Fields of smiles

The summer months may have raced past for yet another year, but a last hurrah is still spreading smiles in the rolling hills of Greendale. Generous summer rainfall helped turn the vision of farmers Simon and Anita Lidgett into a cheerful reality, as acres of giant flowers soared for the sky at Greendale Sunflowers. Visitors are invited to head along and pick their own sunflowers from 11am to 5pm Thursday and Friday and 11am to 6pm Saturday and Sunday at 30 Lidgetts Lane, Greendale. Entry of $5 includes one sunflower, every flower after that is $2. People are encouraged to bring their own secateurs. Details: Greendale Sunflowers on Facebook. Benjamin Millar
Health merger green light By Benjamin Millar A permanent merger of the western suburbs’ two health services has been given the green light by both the Western Health Board and Djerriwarrh Health Services administrator. The approval follows a report on the proposed voluntary amalgamation of Western Health and Djerriwarrh Health Services that recommended proceeding with a voluntary amalgamation based on “clear community benefits” from such a move, especially in light of the state government decision to hand
operation of a new Melton Hospital to Western Health. The recommendation for amalgamation has been sent to the secretary of the Department of Health for consideration, paving the way for the merged entity to be responsible for almost one million people living in the fast-growing corridor. Western Health and Djerriwarrh Health Services currently service the healthcare needs of 985,000 people from Footscray and Williamstown to Bacchus Marsh, employing more than 7600 workers across 13 sites.
Talks about a potential merger began early last year but stalled during the COVID-19 crisis. A joint statement released by the services stated that the immediate priority remains certainty and confidence for staff and communities. “While the department make its reviews, both health services have prepared the way for a joint transition team to be put in place to drive change in the event the Minister for Health approves the voluntary amalgamation,” it stated.

The statement promised that Bacchus Marsh and Melton Regional Hospital will continue to operate as a community-based hospital, Grant Lodge residential aged care at Bacchus Marsh will be retained and that there will be no reductions in overall health staffing numbers, and no losses to frontline clinical staff as a consequence of amalgamation. “There will be ongoing community participation and engagement with local service planning, clients and patients will continue to have choice as to where they access care.”

Boosting pregnancy support By Benjamin Millar Melton South babies and their families are set to receive better early health care under a new partnership aimed at addressing low birth weights. Recent studies have shown that children born with a low birth weight have an increased risk of obesity, diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure, as well as intellectual and developmental disabilities. The Murdoch Children’s Research Institute (MCRI) has been commissioned by North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network
(NWMPHN) to co-design, implement and evaluate new approaches to help address these risks. Dr Elisha Riggs of the MCRI said the project would use a ‘whole of service’ approach with Melton South families around the time of having a baby, including group pregnancy care. “The project will work with local communities to ensure services are well set up to meet the needs of culturally diverse families, including families of refugee background,” Dr Riggs said. The Melton South program will be supported by Djerriwarrh Health Services, Melton
council, VICSEG New Futures and Foundation House. Djerriwarrh chief executive Belinda Scott said the service will be providing pregnancy and early postnatal care. “The early days of a child’s life are integral to their development and overall health and wellbeing, but not all children are getting the best chance to thrive in this critical period,” she said. “Melton South has been identified as an area with a high proportion of refugee and migrant families who are likely to face multiple barriers to maternity and early childhood health care.”
Melton council’s maternal and child health service will contribute via early childhood health and development care and parenting support. Mayor Kathy Majdlik said the program will help more local children get the best start in life. “Our maternal and child health nurses will be able to engage more pregnant mothers and new babies … in key care services and better support their health and wellbeing,” she said. “This collaboration will help respond to health inequities and improve access to care … and I’m really proud that council will play a role in implementing such important change.”
Kurunjang woman charged with murder
The annual ‘Walk With Her’ event will take place in Hannah Watts Park. (Supplied)
Walk to help change the story The chance to walk the walk for women’s safety is coming to Melton this Sunday. Led by Women Making it Happen and supported by Djerriwarrh Health Services, the annual ‘Walk With Her’ event will take place in Hannah Watts Park. Djerriwarrh chief executive Belinda Scott said the COVID-19 pandemic and associated restrictions have resulted in increased episodes of violence against women, but the community
can help change the story. “Djerriwarrh Health Services acknowledges that violence in the workplace and in the community in all forms is unacceptable and should not be tolerated,” she said. “We proudly support the Walk With Her event and invite you to join us in walking towards a safer, more respectful and equal community.” A COVIDSafe event, the free Walk With Her
event will feature opportunities to hear from local women, walk together to demonstrate support for a safer community, and help prevent violence against women. The event starts at 10.30am Sunday, March 21. Registration essential via www.eventbrite. com.au
A 45-year-old Kurunjang woman has been charged with murder as part of a police investigation into the death of Kon Kritikos in Coburg last November. Danielle Lee Birchall was arrested and charged with murder last Tuesday, a fortnight after police went public with a plea for information relating to the attack. Detectives last month revealed that they were pursuing leads involving a female suspect over an attack on Mr Kritikos’ in his Reynard Street home on November 11. Mr Kritikos’ son found his father at his home about 11pm, with police believing he had been assaulted some time between 3.30pm and 5.30pm that day. The victim was taken to hospital but died 13 days later. At the time, police interviewed the Kurunjang woman and another man, but they were released pending further investigations. In pleaing for public help with the case, the homicide squad’s Detective Inspector Tim Day described the incident as an “incredibly violent attack on one of the most vulnerable members of our community”. He said that Mr Kritikos had been home alone at the time of the attack because his wife was in hospital. Birchall appeared before Melbourne Magistrates Court via video link last Tuesday and was remanded in custody to appear before court on July 27. Benjamin Millar

Hampers fill a need More than 470 Melburnians, including many in the west, have been assisted through a hamper project run by a Greek welfare society. Non-profit organisation PRONIA started the project in November, to help members of both the Greek and wider community who experienced isolation and financial hardship during the coronavirus pandemic and its aftermath. PRONIA’s Family & Community Services Unit delivered the relief hampers across Wyndham, Hobsons Bay, Brimbank, Melton, Maribyrnong and Greater Geelong. PRONIA received $15,000 funding from the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing (previously known as Department of Premier and Cabinet) to support families and
individuals in need. PRONIA’s social worker and project lead Niki Fotias said: “We co-ordinated the project tasks, procedures and outputs in a way that was tailored to the needs of the Greek community’s vulnerable members. “Our team dedicated time and effort to ensure the hampers reached those that needed them most … the emotional reaction and gratitude of the recipients has been our best reward.” PRONIA’s chief Tina Douvos-Stathopoulos said that last year, the organisation experienced an increase in demand for emergency relief during the pandemic. PRONIA thanked Basfoods International for supporting the hamper initiative.
Melton mayor Kathy Majdlik has been elected a member of the Municipal Association of Victoria Board. Eynesbury kinder opens By Benjamin Millar The $4.3 million Eynesbury Early Learning Centre is off to a flying start, with three-andfour-year-old kindergarten children quickly settling in. Early Childhood Minister Ingrid Stitt and Melton MP Steve McGhie visited Eynesbury last Wednesday to officially open the centre, which is co-located with the new primary school. The centre – a joint state government and Melton council project – features 66 kinder places across two rooms as well as a maternal child health office and community meeting space. It was built at Eynesbury Primary School to aid a smooth transition to school for local pupils and help parents avoid the “double drop-off” to kindergarten and school. Ms Stitt said the state government is investing record amounts in early childhood, including nearly $5 billion to deliver 15 hours of three-year-old kinder to every Victorian child over the next decade. “Building the Education State starts with the early years – that’s why we are delivering a record investment into early childhood services, including here at Eynesbury,” she said. “Making it easier for parents to ditch the dreaded double drop-off is just part of our commitment to make sure every child can access top notch education close to home.” Melton MP Steve McGhie said the state government is upgrading infrastructure through a $1.68 billion co-investment with the early childhood sector to build and expand kindergarten facilities across the state. “We know that education begins far earlier than a child’s first step into primary school and this new kinder will give local children in Eynesbury the start they deserve.”

The state government provided $3.2 million for the centre, topped up with a further $1.1 million from Melton council. Melton mayor Kathy Majdlik said with 49 babies born every week in Melton, new facilities are essential. “Access to kindergarten and maternal and
child health services is so important, this centre is helping to ensure Eynesbury’s littlest residents can get a great start to their early development and education,” she said. “It’s wonderful to see so many families enrol their children here and make the most of these services.”

Help getting ready for kinder Parents preparing for preschool education next year can have all their questions answered when Melton council and local kindergarten providers hold free open days and information sessions later this month. State government-funded three-year-old kinder is being rolled out from next year, giving families access to five hours of subsidised three-year-old kinder per week, as well as 15 hours of subsided four-year-old kinder. To help families make the leap into preschool education, Melton council and local kindergarten providers are running a face-to-face open week and online Zoom information sessions for both age groups. Melton mayor Kathy Majdlik said families often have a lot of questions when preparing for kindergarten. “Starting kindergarten is a big step for both children and their families, so it’s important to choose one you’re all comfortable with,” she said. Cr Majdlik said the sessions are a chance for parents and carers to meet teachers, ask questions and help identify if their child is ready for kinder. Local kindergartens will open their doors for Kindergarten Open Week from March 15 to March 19. Sessions will be held online from 6.30-8pm on March 25 and 29. Kindergarten registrations for three and four-year-old kinder in 2022 open Wednesday, March 24. Details: melton.vic.gov.au/kinderready Benjamin Millar

Cheques not in the mail By Tara Murray Some Fraser Rise residents are being forced to drive about 13 kilometres to pick up their mail because there is no mail delivery service in their area. A number of residents, including those in the Westwood and Sienna North estates, took to a local Facebook group recently complaining that their mail is being delivered to Melton post office and not the nearby Caroline Springs post office. One resident Sally, who didn’t want her last name printed, said the whole thing was beyond
a joke. “I don’t receive mail and was told I won’t until July at least,” she said.“Redirection has been a nightmare and they take my mail to Melton instead of Caroline Springs. They don’t even let me know if there’s mail there.” Sally said that she spent an hour at the Melton post office recently trying to set up a PO Box but was told that it had to be approved. Her mail redirection from her previous address has also been stopped. Another resident, Kaleb Dovale, said he wasn’t told that his mail wouldn’t be delivered when he moved in.
He said it was only after complaining about some issues about parcel delivery, that “a whole lot of letters” were dropped at his house. “I had a lot of fines and official notices,” he said. “It caused me a lot of trouble.” Other residents have complained to Australia Post on a number of occasions. One resident said they were told that mail was being returned to senders. An Australia Post spokesperson said some areas of Fraser Rise were not getting delivery because of safety concerns. “In Fraser Rise, over 4000 households and delivery points are receiving a street mail
delivery service, with 530 of these commencing as recently as March 1,“ the spokesperson said. “While there is ongoing construction in parts of Fraser Rise, some areas are not safe for our people to deliver at the moment. “Safety is our number one priority at Australia Post and once these areas are safe, delivery will start in these parts of Fraser Rise as well.” The spokesperson said any mail that can’t be available for collection at Melton post office and any carded items will go to Caroline Springs post office. Residents who are not receiving street delivery can also access a PO Box at Melton post office for a reduced rate.
Exploring Hillside by bike Six-time Tour de France rider Matteo Bono has made the most of the local riding paths since moving to Hillside. The Italian, who moved to the area two years ago to be with his fiance, said he has enjoyed exploring his new home on the bike. He has been pleasantly surprised to see many other locals out on their bikes since the COVID-19 pandemic started. “It’s actually really interesting what has happened during COVID-19,” he said. “I was surprised to see the participation of a lot more people cycling. It’s been people of all ages from five years old to people who are 70 to 80 years old. You could really see a boom of cycling … I hope it will continue.” Mr Bono said bike riding was good for both your physical and mental health, and good for the community. He said Hillside provided the perfect backdrop for a ride with a number
of cycling paths in the area and he was still finding new paths all the time. With the lockdown over, Mr Bono said he hoped that people would stick with bike riding. “It’s good for everyone and it’s nice to see more people on the bike,” he said. “I say to others just keep going and it’s important to follow the rules and be safe. “Be confident on the bike and to keep going and learning. You might get problems but be confident and the problems will pass.” As well as continuing to ride, Mr Bono has set up a new business, Bike Hotels, which is an online platform connecting cyclists with bike-friendly accommodation and services. He said he had started working on the project before lockdown and was hoping that it was something that would help the local community. Tara Murray

MY PLACE Bobby Kotevski is the new principal of Parkwood Green Primary School in Hillside. He speaks with Tara Murray about his passion to teach and why he decided to take on this new role.
What is your teaching background and why did you want to become a teacher? Over the past 21 years, I have dedicated my life to education through various roles such as a classroom teacher, specialist teacher, leading teacher, learning coach, welfare co-ordinator, assistant principal and principal. In each of my roles, I have sought to ensure the success of each student and the school, by providing the best instructional and extracurricular opportunities and support possible. I have worked in several schools over my career. I have taught at Taylors Lakes PS, Sydenham Hillside PS, Dinjerra PS (assistant principal), principal of Epping PS and now principal of Parkwood Green. What is your connection to the Hillside community? I have a very strong connection to the west. I was born in the west, I live in the west and have a deep passion, commitment and drive to give back to the west. I have taught in the Hillside community for almost 15 years and that deep connection to the families and the Hillside community is what I missed over the past seven years. So when this opportunity came up, I just had to go for it. I didn’t even have to think about it.

legacy of success established by past, current and future Parkwood Green staff by building strong relationships with our students, staff and our community partners. My goals are to ensure that we deliver a coherent and rich curriculum delivered by passionate teachers and leaders. Melton and Moorabool solar power users will have more stable systems able to export extra energy into the grid following a blitz on the local network. Electricity distributor Powercor has embarked on a four-month program to improve the ability of the electricity network to serve an estimated 50,000 homes with rooftop solar systems. The Solar Hotspots Program is targetting areas with high levels of rooftop solar penetration to improve the export capacity of homes and reduce tripping of solar systems that can otherwise be caused by voltage issues when excess solar is exported into the electricity network. The program will involve network upgrades in Melton, Melton West, Toolern Vale and Kurunjang as well as Bacchus Marsh, Darley, Maddingley, Balliang, Coimadai, Hopetoun Park, Long Forest and Merrimu. Powercor electricity networks general manager Mark Clarke said the rate of new applications for solar connections has more than doubled in the past 18 months, resulting in 21 per cent of customers now generating a total of 580MW of electricity. “In the hotspot areas, greater than one in three homes has solar connected, so our program of works is important to helping these customers make the most of their investment,” he said. “We recognise the future of energy is being driven by customer choices and we have a big role in enabling them.” Dedicated field crews will be working until June on the network’s poles and wires to make sure the voltage is well balanced across all powerlines, as well as changing the settings on major transformers in zone substations to

reduce the overall voltage levels. Solar exports can affect the quality of power supplied by electricity networks because by injecting electricity, they impact on voltage. This potentially impacts other customers including those without solar. Mr Clarke said that by July, an estimated 50,000 current or potential solar customers within the Powercor hotspot areas will benefit from being able to export more to the grid.
“We do not prevent customers from installing rooftop solar, but we have a responsibility to all our customers to make sure any excess electricity is safely exported into the network,” he said. During the solar hotspot programs, some customers may experience planned outages to allow crews to safely conduct their work. Powercor will directly notify customers ahead of any planned outages.

Melton may be one of Australia’s fastest growing areas, but nature lovers looking for a quiet pocket are still blessed with some welcoming beauty spots, as Star Weekly photographer Damjan Janevski captured last week. Arthur Westlake Memorial Reserve in Melton West is a popular place for people of all ages to take a stroll or enjoy a picnic by the lake, with plenty of ducks to keep them company.
Melton Botanic Garden is another local gem with a wide diversity of flora and birdlife. Friends of the Melton Botanic Garden will be celebrating National Eucalypt Day on March 23 by holding a guided tour of the Garden’s three-hectare Dryland Eucalyptus Arboretum, featuring more than 100 dry climate species. The 90-minute walk begins at the depot at 10am, bookings are essential via 9743 3819 or friends@fmbg.org.au.

Cr Kathy Majdlik We’ve officially opened the Eynesbury Early Learning Centre, and I’m pleased to say it’s a facility that is making family life easier by providing access to kindergarten, primary school, and maternal and child health services on the same site.

Enjoy a local night-time feast Dog parks, pet safety, and animal registrations – have your say Do you take your dog to the local off-lead dog parks; are you concerned about the welfare of local cats and dogs; or should there be more support for vulnerable pet owners? We’re planning our animal management services for the next four years, and whether you own a pet or not, you’re encouraged to have your say. You can take the council survey, make a submission or attend an online forum to share your views on what should be included in the updated Domestic Animal Management Plan. The plan will cover a range of pet related matters including the rehoming of abandoned pets, dog off-leash areas, picking up after animals, the safety of pets and the community, and the role pets play in family life. The survey is open until Friday 2 April, and a forum will be held online, on Wednesday 31 March, 7pm. Visit conversations.melton. vic.gov.au/animalplan
The Melbourne Food and Wine Festival is coming to the City of Melton! Westside Crawls is a series of night-time feasts celebrating our western suburbs eateries. Book in and join other food lovers through a walking tour of three venues, stopping for a bite and a drink at each. The Melton Crawl is on Saturday 30 March – book via melton.vic.gov.au/meltoncrawl
The Caroline Springs Crawl is on Tuesday 16 March – book via melton.vic.gov.au/cscrawl
*If you can’t make it to Westside Crawls, why not dine-out at some of the fantastic local eateries in the City of Melton any night of the week. With support from Council, more outdoor dining options are popping up across our city every week.
Coburn Ward with Cr Ashleigh Vandenberg Since being elected as Coburn Ward Councillor last October, I have spoken to many residents and sporting clubs about the important issues faced by those who call the City of Melton home. As a result, I’ve already submitted motions to begin tackling these issues, which have pleasingly been supported by my fellow Councillors, and will work to ensure ours is a city in which everyone can thrive.
Around 3,500 tonnes of illegally dumped litter is collected in the City of Melton each year, costing Council more than $1.5 million to dispose of. Which is why I encourage residents to report dumped rubbish by completing a litter report on our website, melton.vic.gov.au/ dumpedrubbish and to use a hard waste collection to dispose of unwanted household goods. You can find out more about this service by visiting melton.vic.gov.au/hardwaste
I’m passionate about promoting the importance of women in leadership and sport, celebrating women’s achievements through events like International Women’s Day and addressing the key issues that affect women and children through initiatives like the Stand Up, Take Action Forum.
As a mother of two little ones, I’m thrilled to be able to make a real difference to the lives of future generations, and will strive to ensure our residents have access to the infrastructure, services and community assets they need to be healthy, safe and strong.
I’m also dedicated to highlighting the importance of tackling the incidence of illegal dumping within our municipality. Litter and dumped rubbish is not only unsightly, but also creates significant environmental impacts across the municipality.
Feel free to contact me regarding Coburn Ward or Council related issues on 0499 801 183; email: ashleigh.vandenberg@melton.vic. gov.au or like my Facebook page @crvandenberg
With 49 babies born every week in our city, there’s no doubt that new facilities like this one are absolutely essential. This centre, and many others just like it, are helping to ensure our littlest residents can get a great start to their early development and education. We’re grateful to the Victorian Government for partnering with us on this much-needed project and I’d like to thank Minister for Early Childhood Ingrid Stitt and Member for Melton Steve McGhie for joining me in officially opening the centre. This week, we have a powerful online forum which will help local sporting clubs and community groups learn to be champions for equality. It’s a fantastic opportunity to discover how equality can strengthen your club or group, and create a safer community for everyone. I know many local clubs and groups are already doing wonderful work towards gender equality and we want to help ensure you can keep evolving in this space. The impact of gender issues and the prevalence of family violence may not always be obvious but our community is in a great position to inspire positive change. This event is open to everyone, so please book your place for this free online event this Wednesday 17 March (7pm – 8.30pm): meltonlearning.com.au/events/ standuptakeaction/ You’re welcome to contact me regarding council matters at kathy.majdlik@melton.vic.gov.au or on 0412 584 058.

FEATURING ... HEALTHY LIVING
The best decision you’ll ever make Moving into residential aged care is one of the biggest decisions that an individual and their family can make. It is a decision affecting not only the person needing the care, but also close family members such as children and siblings. Casey Hutchinson from McKenzie Aged Care understands that more often than not, the decision can be a stressful and uncertain time for all concerned. “Since the move into aged care is a high-involvement and an intensely considered purchase, it can be extremely upsetting if the care and service provided in your new home does not live up to the advertised or promised expectations,” Casey says. “Whatever the reason, it is important to know that you have the right and freedom to switch to another provider.” Sutton Park by McKenzie Aged Care provides warm and welcoming homes where people are cared for and cared about. Casey says Sutton Park can assist and guide you through the process of switching to better care that meets your wants and needs. “Switching to Sutton Park and quality aged care is easier than you may think,” she says. “We make the process as smooth and stress-free as possible for everyone involved. “We will also liaise with your current provider on your behalf, or with you, to ensure both parties efficiently manage the changeover.” McKenzie Aged Care has dedicated team members who can guide and support you through the process and answer any questions you may have, and Casey encourages anyone considering a move for themselves or a loved one to call for more information. “Make the switch to quality aged care with Sutton Park in Melton South today. It will be the best decision you make.”

AT A GLANCE
Hyundai Palisade is the largest SUV imported to Australia by the South Korean auto maker. It’s aimed at those wanting a large vehicle to carry people so leans in the direction of comfort and ease of driving rather than full-on off-road work. Interestingly, it has a near-twin brother in the latest model Kia Sorento that was introduced in 2020. Two models are offered, the first simply called Palisade, the other is Highlander.
MODEL RANGE Hyundai Palisade 3.8 GDI 2WD: $60,000 Hyundai Palisade 2.2 CRDI AWD: $64,000 Hyundai Palisade Highlander 3.8 GDI 2WD: $71,000 Hyundai Palisade Highlander 2.2 CRDI AWD: $75,000
Note: These prices do not include government or dealer delivery charges. Contact your local Hyundai dealer for drive-away prices.
Styling The large grille treatment works well and Palisade looks longer than it really is thanks to the large windows that stretch all the way to the rear. The shape of the C-pillar gives it a sort-of sleek look when viewed side on. The slight downward slope of the roof adds to the effect. The tail is squared off, with lights that have a purposeful appearance. The word PALISADE is spread loud and proud in capital letters across the rear. When you realise that it was initially designed very much with the American market in mind you will understand this. Guards have a purposeful look that appealed to those to whom we showed the Palisade during our week’s road test.
Engines / transmissions Interestingly, both petrol and diesel engines are offered. A four-cylinder turbo-diesel with a capacity of 2.2 litres drives all four wheels. It puts out 147 kW, and 440 Nm with a big spread from 1750 to 2750 revs. This range is where the great majority of drivers will be driving virtually all the time. The petrol is a 3.8-litre V6 with 217 kW of power, and 355 Nm of torque at a very high 5200 revs. It drives through the front wheels. We haven’t had a chance to road test a petrol but will hopefully get into one soon and report back to you with your feelings on the torque band.
Safety Interior The cabin carries on with the spacious look created by the exterior. This is an eight-seater with a two:three:three arrangement. There’s also a seven-seat version with twin bucket seats in the centre row. This is likely to make it popular with upmarket limousine companies as their customers like individual seats (with three plebs squeezed into the rear!). The fit and fitment of the interior is to a high standard. These days you won’t even find upmarket European vehicles with fitment that’s better than Hyundai’s.
Infotainment The large central touchscreen gives easy access to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There is a plethora of ways of connecting as Both Palisade models have seven USB ports and four 12V sockets. 28 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY Tuesday, 16 March, 2021
Palisade has yet to be ANCAP tested. Crash avoidance features are lane-keeping assistance, rear cross-traffic alert and blind zone warning with intervention. All have IsoFix child seat positions.

Diggers set for action By Tara Murray Diggers Rest footballers are raring to go, ahead of the Riddell District Football League season kicking off on April 17. After a season of no footy due to the COVID-19 pandemic. the Burras have been busy putting in work behind the scenes. Burras’ coach Jamie Lobb said the club’s pre-season had been one of the strongest they’ve had in recent years. “We’ve got double the numbers we would normally have on the track at this time of year,” he said. “We’ve had 50 to 55 on the track each night, we would normally get about 30. All the guys have enjoyed being able to see each other.” Lobb said they kept their training program the same as they normally would, with it ramping up after the Christmas break. The Burras, who made the preliminary final in 2019, will have a similar list to the one they put together for last year’s cancelled season. “I’m pretty happy with it,” Lobb said. “Most of the players from last year are back and the couple of guys we recruited last season are returning. “[Bowen medallist] Jaidyn Caruana was the big-name signing for us last season. We’ve added a couple of young kids from Melton. “We’ll have two or three guys up on what we had in 2019.” David Morrice and Corey Wright have both moved to other clubs, while Alec Del Papa has retired. Lobb said they were unsure whether Lachie Langford would be in Melbourne and whether he would play. Lobb said it would be business as usual for the club, which is always among the premiership mix.
Diggers Rest coach Jamie Lobb. (Luke Hemer)
“We’re setting standards high for ourselves and not selling ourselves short,” he said. “We have a lot of volunteers and people putting in the hard work to get to the big day. “There’s no lay down for us.” With reigning premiers Rupertswood having moved competitions last year, Lobb expects the premiership race to be different this year. But he said because the finals would be top
five instead of six, you won’t notice having one less team as much. The Burras face Woodend-Hesket in round one on April 17. They then face Macedon the following week on Anzac Day. Traditionally, the Cats faced Rupertswood on Anzac Day. Lobb said that it would be a special day. The club has had a long tradition of heading to the
Sunbury RSL dawn service. He said he hoped they could now make a tradition with the Cats to play on April 25 every year. “It’s something we’re looking forward to,” he said. “We jumped on the front foot pretty quickly [to fill the vacant spot]. I’ve gone to the game the last three to four years and it’s always a good day.”

SPORT Riley’s walking for glory at national championship
Riley Coughlan. (Supplied)
Sunbury’s Riley Coughlan has taken the next step in his athletics career, qualifying for his first national championship. The teenager will be walking for gold at the Australian Track and and Field Championships later this month, after a strong performance at the Athletics Victoria State Championships recently. He finished in second place, four seconds behind the winner Liam Hutchins. Both boys have qualified for the national titles. Going into the state championships with one of the fastest times in Australia in his age group, Coughlan had set his heart on making nationals for the first time. The nationals will be held at Sydney Olympic Park in Sydney between April 12 and 21. “It feels pretty good,” he said. “I’m happy to make it and I felt like I had a good chance of making it this year.”
Coughlan, who represents Knox Athletics at senior athletic events, said his focus at the national would be to enjoy the experience and take it all in. He hoped he could finish in the top five. “My time is ranked fourth in my age group at the moment.” The 14-year-old, who attends Salesian College in Sunbury, said he became interested in walking events after contesting them at Sunbury Little Athletics Centre. “I got interested in it through the junior development squad through little aths. I find it easy now, it was a bit harder when I started. I got more into it as I got to the higher levels. “My [now] coach came and asked me to train with her in Knox. Mum now takes me over on Tuesdays and Sundays and sometimes Thursdays.” Coughlan said Australian walking Olympic
bronze medallist Dane Bird-Smith was the person he looked up to in the sport. Coughlan has been competing in the 3-kilometre event, a long way shorter than the open age international events of 20 kilometres and 50 kilometres. He said he might consider taking up the longer events when he’s older. It’s a busy few weeks for Coughlan, who at the weekend competed at the Little Athletics Victoria State Championships. He was due to compete in the under-14 1500km run and the 1500km walking events. Overall, 11 Sunbury Little Athletics athletes were set to compete at the event: Logan Carroll, Ellora Clements, Isabella Jordan, Liam Joyce, Oliver Long, Oliver Smyth, Michael Sparks, Georgia Stepanoski, Zachary Stevens and Indiana Stott. Tara Murray
Bramble realises dream By Tara Murray New Hawthorn rookie Lachlan Bramble had moments where he had given up on his dream of playing AFL. So when Hawthorn gave the 22-year-old the opportunity to train with them and potentially earn a rookie spot for this year, the Sunbury resident was keen to give it a good crack. It didn’t take long for the Hawks to sign Bramble as part of the pre-season supplemental selection period (SSP), becoming the final player on their list. “At stages I didn’t think it would happen,” he said. “I did a few Wednesdays training with Hawthorn during the week … and then got asked to train two weeks full-time with the club. “It was awesome and I was blown away they had asked me to do it. I thought this was my opportunity. “It was one last crack and it paid off. It is awesome and [is] starting to settle in.” Being on an AFL list is a far cry from 2019 when Bramble decided to step away from VFL to play local football. He had played 11 senior games in two years with Williamstown, but starved of consistent opportunities he returned to his local club, the Sunbury Lions, in the Ballarat Football League. “Previously I didn’t play as much VFL as I would have liked and I got quite frustrated as I thought that I could have been playing,” he admits. “There were a few other little things going on and my mates got me back to play with Sunbury. It was nice not having to worry about structures and clear my head and just play footy.” While Bramble enjoyed his time playing with the Lions, he said there was still an urge to play at a higher level. He signed with Williamstown for the 2020 VFL season, which would later be cancelled. Bramble said the lead-up to 2020 was the best pre-season he had completed. While COVID-19 ended the footy season without a game being played, Bramble hit his home gym with the aim of putting on some more muscle, while trying to keep fit. Bramble joined the Box Hill Hawks for the 2021 VFL season. It was a familiar face in former Williamstown and now Box Hill assistant coach Andy Collins that convinced him to make the move. “Andy Collins rang me one day and said he would love to coach me again,” he said. “I had made a strong relationship with Collo and took his word and took the opportunity to play with Box Hill. “I jumped at it and it has paid off.”

Bramble said it had been an easy transition to Box Hill, where he was one of the older guys at the group. Now part of the AFL list, Bramble said his aim was to continue with the same motto that had seen him earn his spot: playing with confidence. Bramble played in Hawthorn’s only official practice match against North Melbourne,
finishing with 12 possessions and kicking two points. “It’s pretty surreal and I never thought I would play an AFL game, let alone be on an AFL list,” he said. “I took a lot out of the game. Hopefully I’ll build from there and hopefully I’ll get to do it in a few weeks time.”
It was a perfect debut season for Williamstown CYMS in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association Women’s competition. Fielding a women’s side for the first time, the CYs went through the season undefeated, capping it off earlier this month with a grand final victory. CYs president Leigh Hillier said the first season exceeded all expectations. “It’s our first women’s side in 135 years at the club,” he said. “It’s an awesome achievement to win in their first season. We wanted to be a more diverse club and wanted more women to be involved.” Hillier said their female playing numbers had grown throughout the season and they had finished with a group of 16 players. He said there were mixed emotions after the grand final win against Glenroy, winning by two runs. “There was a sense of relief,” he said. “Having not lost a game all season, there was pressure on us going into the grand final not to lose. It got closer than we would have liked. We had the runs on the board and we kept at it. “It was a tense finish, but that’s what you want in finals.” Sally Burt was named player of the match for her 25 with the bat as she stuck around and brought stability to the batting as others went out around her. Hillier said the club was already better for having a women’s side. He said they would look at having two sides next season, while they would like to field junior girls’ sides too. He also thanked Hobsons Bay council for its support in helping guide the club in setting up the team. Tara Murray
