Performing arts co-ordinator Riley Beech, who is also the writer of the musical, said the college wanted to do something out of the “usual” for a school production.“Ithasbeen so long for us since we did a production … And for whatever reason, the zombie thing is what I landed on, but it’s actually a bit of a social satire,” Mr Beech said. “It’s really about kids just learning who they are, in a world where the adults freak out about all their actions, “High school is a time for a lot of self discovery, which is often very hard when there’s this challenge of the way someone is perceived, versus who they reallyTheare.”production cast includes students from across the year levels of 7 through to 12, with students also working behind the scenes in choreography, direction, photography, stage crew and more.

A Melton high school is putting on a musical performance that explores the journey of growing up and self-discovery, but with a spooky twist. Staughton College will present their production of TheHorde on September 1 and 2, an original musical that features zombies as a way to discuss the trials and tribulations of adolescence.

By Olivia Condous Melton council has quashed potential plans for a new Christmas event in the municipality that would have seen funding taken away from a community organisation and put into a fresh council event. A report presented to the August 15 council meeting recommended council plan and deliver an annual Christmas event in Caroline Springs, in addition to the Carols by Candlelight event held in Melton. The current Caroline Springs event is run by religious group In Church, which has received $40,000 in funding annually from council sinceThe2017.report proposed that the funding be withdrawn from In Church and used for a council-run event, which would include community performances, a twilight Christmas market, roving entertainment and more. The report stated that no public consultation had been undertaken in preparing the report.

Cr Abboushi said he’d convinced councillors that it was too close to Christmas to make the change, but the option for a second council-run event would be reviewed next year.

Christmas event quashed

Councillor Steve Abboushi proposed an alternate motion that council provide funding to In Church this year and consult with the community about the future of Christmas events, which was carried unanimously.

Cr Abboushi said that convincing his fellow councillors to vote against a council-run event in Caroline Springs did not come easily.

“I contacted the church the day of the meeting, to talk to the pastor and see how he was feeling about it and he had no idea that this was even on the cards,” Cr Abboushi said. “I didn’t think it was the right thing to do … the church feedback was that planning had already commenced for this year,” he said.

In Church spokesperson Christine Pettit said the organisation was “very grateful” to receive funding for another year and had always created an event where everyone was welcome.“We’re so grateful that we can do it live this year, because the last few years have been online, we’re really looking forward to seeing everybody and everybody’s welcome.”

“The beef, chilli and chocolate is one of those ones that’s raised eyebrows, as you can imagine it’s got quite a unique taste,” Mr Zammit said. “The last couple of weeks, it’s been one that more customers have dared to try … the warmth from the chilli and the sweetness from the dark chocolate actually works really well.” Mr Zammit said he sometimes developed his ideas for new sausages from flavor combinations that would be served up in dishes at top restaurants, combining multiple elements into one sausage.

“The biggest challenge from a sausage point of view is that all the ingredients have to be cooked at the same time, but different ingredients require different cooking times at different temperatures,” he said.

Keen skateboarders and basketballers are one step closer to enjoying new facilities in Moorabool, with construction works almost complete. The works are set to transform two public parks in Ballan and Gordon, with the addition of a skate park and basketball court in each. According to Moorabool council, the facilities at Gordon Public Park will be ready for public use by the end of this month and Mill Park in Ballan will be finished by the end of September.Whilethe skate parks at the two parks are essentially completed, Moorabool council chief executive Derek Madden requested that residents refrain from accessing the areas until all works are finished.

Real estate buyer activity in Melton has decreased over the last year, according to the latest quarterly data from RPM Group. The organisation’s Greenfield Market Report for the second quarter of 2022 has shown that buyer demand has shifted from Melton to Wyndham, with the latter’s sales three per cent higher this quarter. According to RPM, while Melton had 14 more active housing estates than Wyndham, many were nearing completion Meanwhile, Wyndham had five per cent more new lots released than Melton due to larger estates with availability. The report showed that the market for housing in estate developments had significantly slowed across the state in the latest quarter, due to pressures caused by inflation, increasing construction costs and rising interest rates. RPM managing director of project marketing Luke Kelly said real estate buyers currently faced multiple challenges that weren’t present two years ago. “Many buyers have been forced to reassess their borrowing capacity and re-evaluate their buying decisions in light of interest rate rises, including the most recent 0.5 per cent increase in the cash rate to 1.85 per cent,” Mr Kelly“Atsaid.thesame time, they’re facing increasing residential construction costs, rising living expenses fuelled by inflation and higher home loanForrepayments.”thelatestquarter, the western region of Melbourne made up 45 per cent of the total sales in Victorian growth corridors, despite sales falling nine per cent during the quarter to 2049 lot sales. By Olivia Condous Residents from across the northern and western suburbs of Melbourne are delaying their fourth dose of the COVID-19 vaccination, according to health professionals working in the area. Doctors have reported that some patients are putting off receiving the vaccine as they have heard that a better version, which is more targeted toward the dominant Omicron strain, is in development.

Australia for many more months. Only 64 per cent of Melton residents have received a third dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, making the municipality the third worst in theAltonastate. North Medical Group GP Dr Mukesh Haikerwal said he’d observed that people’s will to get the vaccine had definitely “dropped off”. “A whole bunch of people haven’t had their third jab at all, many of them are coming in positive now,” he said. The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) issued a provisional determination to Moderna and Pfizer to start approvals for an Omicron-specific vaccine earlier this year. Dr Haikerwal acknowledged the development of a new vaccine was not cause for people to delay their vaccination, as the new version wouldn’t be available until at least the end of the year.

Williamstown resident Sarah Gill said Daffodil Day would be a special time for her to reflect and remember her grandmother, Gwen. “This cause is very close to my heart as I lost my Nana to pancreatic cancer in 2005,” she said. “I do my best to fundraise every year for Girls Night In and I’ve been doing it since 2014. “It’s important to me to raise funds for women’s cancers and promote health checks.” Ms Gill said Gwen valued her independence and held onto that until her death. “When I was in primary school, she helped

resident Steven Robertson lost both his parents to cancer. His father Ted, who was an army sergeant in World War II in Papua New Guinea, initially beat a carcinoma of the colon in 1980, but was then diagnosed with a metastatic renal carcinoma in January 2002, which impacted his kidneys and had spread to other parts of his body. After undergoing radiotherapy, he died in early April later that year at the age of 78. Only a short time after his father’s death, Mr Robertson’s mother was diagnosed with a primary peritoneal carcinomatosis, a rare form of cancer which starts in the thin layer of tissue lining the inside of the abdomen. Despite undertaking chemotherapy and surgery in December of 2002, the doctors discovered the cancer had spread too far to treat and she died in April of 2003 at the age ofMr75.

“Every person who donates or buys daffodils this August will be helping us to continue investing in life-saving cancer research programs, giving hope for better treatments and early detection and ultimately, giving us hope for a cancer-free future.” Cancer Council and its partners have invested more than $290 million in world-class cancer research from 2016 to 2020, leading to a number of advancements in cancer prevention, screening and treatment. Thanks to investment in research, advancements have been made in cancer prevention, screening, and treatment to increase the survival rate from 51 per cent in the late 1980s to about 70 per cent currently. Stalls in Melbourne’s CBD will be selling daffodils on Daffodil Day or daffodils can be bought directly from the Daffodil Day website.

Giving back to those who have had everything taken away is the focus of this year’s Daffodil Day appeal. Running throughout August, Cancer Council Victoria’s Daffodil Day campaign is culminating in Daffodil Day on Thursday, August 25. On the 36th anniversary of Daffodil Day, a number of sons, daughters, mothers, fathers, granddaughters and grandsons within the western and northern suburbs of Melbourne will be commemorating the loved ones they haveMaribyrnonglost.

Safety Kia Niro has autonomous emergency braking including car, pedestrian, cyclist and intersectionLane-keepintervention.andlane-follow assist is handy for driver who aren’t paying full attention and tend to wander about from time to time. Blind-spot and rear cross-traffic alert and avoidance is fitted to all models of the Niro. Our test car had safe-exit assist to prevent opening the door into an approaching car or cyclist. Reverse parking collision avoidance is handy as it can be all but impossible to see others vehicles, or people on foot when revising in tight carparks.

By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring Kia Niro is a small SUV that’s available in two efficient FWD electrified powertrains, the Hybrid Electric (HEV) and full Electric (EV). The previous Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV) has been dropped with the latest (MY23) update which arrived here in April 2022.

Niro is a fairly large vehicle for its class, indeed it’s not far short of being a medium sized model. The wheelbase is a lengthy 4.72 metres. It is 4.42 metres long, 1.83 metres wide and has a height of 1.55 metres. Kia has an impressive seven-year unlimited tohavefollowedtodistancewarrantyonallitsmodels.Itcontinuessurpriseusthatveryfewothermarqueshavethislead.Surelyitisn’tbecausetheydoubtsabouttheabilityoftheirvehicleslastsevenyearswithoutproblems?

Engines / transmissions Niro has a 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol engine producing 77kW of power and 144Nm of torque. It combines with a 32kW 170Nm electric motor to produce 104 kW and 265 Nm.

Kia Niro is packed with power

Interior Niro has pretty good interior space for its class and the styling is attractive with a relatively modern look. The Niro Hybrid has 425 litres of boot space with the rear seats up, or 1419 litres with the second row folded. To achieve this volume there’s a space-saver spare under the boot floor.

The squared off rear end makes for good interior space. (Pictures: Supplied)

Infotainment

Driving Performance is very good with the usual instantaneous response from the accelerator that’s such a delightful part of any vehicle with electricity as part, or all, of its powertrain.

AT A MODELGLANCERANGE Niro S HEV: $44,380 Niro GT-Line HEV: $50,030 Niro S EV: $65,300 Niro GT-Line EV: $72,100

The model we tested has a 10.25-inch central screen as well as a 10.25-inch instrument display. These sit in a wide panel that stretches across most of the front of the dash area. The quality is high and it’s easy to read them at a quick glance. This is an important safety feature as, despite my best intentions, I do tend to look at the centre screen to change radio stations or for other reasons.

Note: These prices do not include government or dealer delivery charges. Contact your local Kia dealer for drive-away prices.

The Niro S HEV gets the latest iteration of the Kia Tiger grille with halogen headlights and LED daytime running lights and taillights. The GT-Line variants get LED headlights. The S HEV runs on 16-inch alloy wheels, the two EV models on 17-inch and the S GT-line on 18s. The gloss-black roof rails are a nice touch and add an upmarket look to the Niro.

likehaveIt’sacomparativelyheavyvehiclesoitdoesn’tahugeamountofgetupandgothatweinourvehicles.Thoseusingitinanormal manner will almost certainly find it more than adequate.Handling is good as Niro and other Kia models are specially set up to suit the needs and desires of Australian drivers. It turns in promptly and holds the road at speeds that aren’t likely to be used by drivers of family cars. There is a head-up display for the driver, but as happens all too often it doesn’t work well if you’re wearing polarising sunglasses - as I do. Some carmakers have prevented this problem by angling the display in a slightly different direction. Kia may care to try this in an update - here’s hoping. The front seats are a good size and we found them comfortable even after several long drives we did as part of our road test reviews. The squared off rear end mean that the getting in and out of the back part of the cabin is easy. Rear seat passengers also have space but if those in the front set their seats back a long way some in the back may find their legroom is tight. It makes sense to take people who are going to be sitting in these seats to come along to the showroom and try them out for size. This may mean you not buying this model and perhaps trying a larger Kia, or perhaps going to look at rival cars. There are air vents in the back of the centre console so the passengers have an even more pleasantHyundairide.says the hybrid models have combined fuel usage of 4.0L/100km for the hybrid. We used three to four litres per hundred during open road driving and five to seven litres per hundred kilometres in city and suburban running.

Summing up Kia Niro hybrid is an exceptional vehicle in many ways, it has minimal fuel consumption if driven correctly and is still pretty economical if you push hard. It’s attractively styled and practical. Combined with that very impressive warranty it’s certainly one to be added to your list of vehicles under consideration in its class.

Burras keen to regroup

WRFL Caroline Springs finished the regular season with a solid win against Hoppers Crossing in the Western Region Football League. The Lakers, who have already sealed the minor premiership, led by four points at quarter time before extending that to 31 points at half time. They were able to maintain the lead throughout the second half, winning 13.7 (85)-6.9 (45). The Lakers a bye in the first week of finals. Altona will play Deer Park in a qualifying final, while Werribee Districts and Hoppers Crossing will face each other in a Wyndham derby. A-League It’s double trouble for Western United with twins Adriana and Melissa Taranto joining the club’s first A-League Women’s side. The 23-year-olds, who play for Calder United in the National Premier League, are the first siblings to sign for Western United. It is a return to the top flight competition for the pair, who both debuted for Melbourne Victory in 2015 as 16-year-olds while also representing Australia at youth level.

By Tara Murray Diggers Rest will need to quickly forget about its qualifying final loss to Wallan if it’s to keep its Riddell District Football League season alive.Heading into the match most people could have seen either team getting the win, but no one predicted what occurred at Romsey Park onTheSaturday.Magpies tore the Burras apart in a 17.14 (116)-3.5 (23) win. The Burras were kept goal less in the first half and trailed by 51 points at the main break. The pain continued in the second half, with the Magpies winning through to face Riddell for a spot in the grand final. Having lost to the Magpies two weeks in a row, Burras coach Jamie Lobb knows they have work to do. He was lost for answers after that performance.“It’sprobably something we don’t want to look too far into,” he said. “ We had a stinker in all parts of the ground and not something you want to dwell on. “We won’t look too deep into it and we’ll focus on ourselves and what we can do to get back into this finals series.”

By Tara Murray Burnside Heights’ season and the coaching tenure of Aidan Stott came to an end in the opening week of Essendon District Football League division 2 finals. The Bears, who stunned many by making finals this season, finished the season with their heads held high as they pushed Coburg Districts on Sunday. The Lions did enough to hold on, winning 12.11 (83)-10.8 (68). Bears president Justin Peagram said they were proud of the season they had this year. “We made finals and I don’t think anyone put us in the top four,” he said. “To make finals was a really good achievement with nine kids under 22.” Peagram said they also knew that depth would be their issue this season and competing with the top couple of sides, but they made the most of it to give other players opportunities.OnSunday, the Bears limped over the line against the Lions. Phoenix maintain pride despite disappointment

The Phoenix needed a win in the final round of the season and hoped that Barwon either had a draw or loss. While the Phoenix did their part of the job, Barwon was able to get that final round win. It meant both teams finished on 55 points with 18 wins, one draw and three losses. Both teams had massive goal differences as well.Traynor said in most divisions this would have been enough to see them either win the league or get promoted. “For us to finish on 55 points and a goal difference of 52 and not get promoted or win the league is disappointing,” he said. “But Barwon won the league fair and square.”Previously the top two teams in state league 5 west would get promoted which adds to the Phoenix’s frustration. The bottom side of state league 4 west won’t be relegated despite struggling all season. Traynor said they should have at least had the opportunity to play in a play off for a shot at getting into state league 4. While disappointed, Traynor said this isn’t the end for this group. “Hopefully we can come back next year and be even better,” he said. “You can look at this two“Youways.can be disappointed or you can use it as motivation. It doesn’t take much imagination to wonder why young basketballer Lucas Impey went straight to his parents when asked about his sporting heroes. Melton Phoenix will use the disappointment of this year to spur them on in FV state league 5 west next season.
