Elevated frustration
By Elsie Lange For half a decade, Sunbury resident Mary Nehmy has been calling for an elevator to be installed at Sunbury Station, and despite major line works ongoing, there’s no plans for one on theThehorizon.70-year-old suffers from acrophobia – an extreme fear of heights – and shortly after moving to Sunbury five years ago she discovered the stairs and ramp at the station were too high for her to use. “It’s really just debilitating,” she said. “It’s affected my life … I had no idea that this was going to happen. I wouldn’t have moved to Sunbury.”She’sraised the issue with various members of the state government in the past, and even suggested filling in the gaps between the steps on the existing stairs as a solution – but was told heritage-listing prevented it.
‘‘ I’m very, very frustrated because they don’t seem to be looking after passengers ’’ -MaryNehmy
As part of the Sunbury line upgrade, wheelchair boarding pads are being installed to help raise the platform height to meet the level of the train to give people with mobility requirements or prams safer and easier access.
Ms Nehmy believes with all the money being invested in the transport network, some cash should have been diverted towards installing a lift.“I’m very, very frustrated because they don’t seem to be looking after passengers,” Ms Nehmy said. “With removing the railway crossing, that’s great, but that only affects people who drive.

He said there weren’t enough incentives to attract doctors to work in public general practice, and said staff were leaving to work in private clinics. The GP is calling for Sunbury to be classified as a District of Workforce Shortage (DWS), which is an area where people are considered to have poor access to specialist medical practitioners.“Weservenot just Sunbury, we serve other towns around Sunbury. To somebody who works in the library, it’s like an event we look forward to every year. Apart from the awards, it’s also an opportunity to engage children and the community in dress ups and finding out what books children have been loving over the past year. At an early childhood level, picture books are everything. We base learning outcomes and story times around books.

Upgrades are complete
Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas announced the completion at the site on Friday and said locals could now “say goodbye” to regular near-miss collisions at the intersection. She thanked the community for their patience while works took place. A $12.5 million state government election commitment funded the project, which included the building of a new and wider bridge over Bunjil Creek. The removal of the previous, historic bluestone bridge to make way for the upgrades was controversial. As reported by StarWeekly in June, the bridge was demolished a month before it was found to meet heritage standards protecting its destruction. In a statement, the government said the bluestone foundations of the old bridge were “carefully deconstructed“ into single blocks by a specialist stonemason, which features on the new bridge and in footpath paving around the intersection.“Theroundabout incorporates a large existing oak tree in the centre to fit with Gisborne’s character. Arborists took grafts from two large elm trees which were removed as part of the project. We’ve carefully grown genetically identical plants from the removed trees,” the government said. “They will be planted at the intersection in spring.” Roads and Road Safety Minister Ben Carroll said the completion of the upgrade months ahead of schedule was a “fantastic outcome”.

development, prices increased by an annual rate of 5.5 per cent above inflation. This meant people buying lots were paying an average of $194,000 more for a typical site than those who bought into a development in its early stages.
The highly-anticipated upgrades at the Melbourne Road and Kilmore Road intersection in Gisborne are now complete. Safety upgrades were finished in just five months, ahead of schedule, and include a new roundabout, shared user paths for cyclists and pedestrians and improved street lighting.
While none of the tracked sales were in Hume estates, councillors fear the decision by developers to “drip feed” housing lots onto the market was driving up land prices, which when combined with rising interest rates and cost of living pressures could create financial problems for homeowners in the municipality. Council is calling on the government to investigate land tax reform, sunset clauses or other measures to address the issue of land banking by developers in growth areas. Cr Naim Kurt, who raised the issue at a council meeting earlier this month, said the state government’s push to reduce the cost of housing by releases land on Melbourne’s outer fringe for development was being “undermined” by developers.
“We could effectively concrete all over Victoria and land costs still wouldn’t drop for families because the developers have the power to halt supply,” he said. thathavegrowthrates,“almostballot.wouldbuyCrKurtspokeofhisownexperiencetryingtoablockofland,sayinghefounddevelopersreleasetwoorthreelotsatatimeinaCrJosephHaweilechoedCrKurt’sexperience,sayingbuyingablockoflandwaslikealottery”.“Wewillnowhavewiththerisinginterestamassiveprobleminthiscityandintheareasofthenorth-westofpeoplewhocomeinatthetopofthemarketexpectinginterestrateswillremainlowforever.”Thegovernmentwascontactedforcomment.

Leisure centre costs a concern
By Elsie Lange
Council planning and environment director Rebecca Stockfeld said it was a great opportunity for the community to make their thoughts known on the proposed plan.
“The Five Mile Creek area is central to the Woodend community and provides the perfect surrounds for recreation and the enjoyment of nature,” Ms Stockfeld said.
The rising costs of council-run leisure centres in Hume is causing concern among locals. During public question time at a meeting on August 8, a resident asked council why leisure centre membership rates were increasing despite a budget surplus of more than $130 million.
“A key feature of the plan includes walking [and] cycling tracks that ‘loop’ and provide connections to longer trails,” council said.

“The final Woodend Five Mile Creek Master Plan will take into consideration community needs as well as ensuring the preservation of the natural environment going forward.
“These tracks will give locals and visitors diverse experiences such as wide-open spaces, natural and exotic forested areas and opportunities to access the water’s edge to watch, enjoy and learn about nature.”
To have you say online, head to: mrsc.vic.gov.au/yoursay. For in-person submissions head to the Woodend Community Centre. Write to PO Box 151, Kyneton VIC 3444 or email environment@mrsc.vic.gov.au.
“We have plenty of privately owned gyms around Hume, but the leisure centres are an accessible option for young people, retirees, and people on low incomes,” the resident said.Inresponse, council said it aimed to ensure its leisure facilities remained affordable, but had experienced a 3.5 per cent increase in leisure utility costs.
“The Sunbury Aquatic Leisure Centre had casual gym passes for $14 and $9 concession … it’s now $28,” one resident said. Another resident said it was “way too expensive” for them. The leisure centre has recently undergone an upgrade, replacing and installing entry and exit doors, improved family and accessible changerooms, upgraded a ramp and walkway within the centre and pathways to it, upgraded the Ligar Street crossing and improved accessible parking.
At the same meeting, councillor Jarrod Bell called for council to investigate the feasibility of turning the Sunbury Aquatic and Leisure Centre into a 24-hour facility.
A master plan for Woodend’s beloved Five Mile Creek is open for community feedback until September 11. The creek links the town, protects threatened species and offers a magical place to walk and enjoy nature. Its floodplains are habitat for the endangered Eucalypt species known as Black Gum, which doesn’t grow anywhere else in Victoria. Macedon Ranges council wants residents to have their say on the plan for the area via online or written submissions.
“While we actively seek to minimise the impact of increased costs on our members, we also need to balance this with the needs of all ratepayers across Hume city,” council said.“As a result, council increased its 2022-23 leisure membership fees by 3 per cent.” Council said it recognised the increase could be challenging for some users due to cost of living pressures, but remained “committed” to helping the community to participate in leisure activities.
“I encourage community members to take the time to review the draft master plan and provide their feedback.” Council said the plan would guide habitat restoration projects, support grant applications and inform infrastructure needs to improve the passive recreation and access to the creek for everyone.

resident Steven Robertson lost both his parents to cancer. His father Ted, who was an army sergeant in World War II in Papua New Guinea, initially beat a carcinoma of the colon in 1980, but was then diagnosed with a metastatic renal carcinoma in January 2002, which impacted his kidneys and had spread to other parts of his body. After undergoing radiotherapy, he died in early April later that year at the age of 78. Only a short time after his father’s death, Mr Robertson’s mother was diagnosed with a primary peritoneal carcinomatosis, a rare form of cancer which starts in the thin layer of tissue lining the inside of the abdomen. Despite undertaking chemotherapy and surgery in December of 2002, the doctors discovered the cancer had spread too far to treat and she died in April of 2003 at the age ofMr75.
“Every person who donates or buys daffodils this August will be helping us to continue investing in life-saving cancer research programs, giving hope for better treatments and early detection and ultimately, giving us hope for a cancer-free future.” Cancer Council and its partners have invested more than $290 million in world-class cancer research from 2016 to 2020, leading to a daffodilday.com.au/s/4443/3388/sboughtdaffodilsthescreeningnumberofadvancementsincancerprevention,andtreatment.Thankstoinvestmentinresearch,advancementshavebeenmadeincancerprevention,screening,andtreatmenttoincreasethesurvivalratefrom51percentinlate1980stoabout70percentcurrently.StallsinMelbourne’sCBDwillbesellingonDaffodilDayordaffodilscanbedirectlyfromtheDaffodilDaywebsite.Details:www.daffodilday.com.auorwww.

The Niro S HEV gets the latest iteration of the Kia Tiger grille with halogen headlights and LED daytime running lights and taillights. The GT-Line variants get LED headlights. The S HEV runs on 16-inch alloy wheels, the two EV models on 17-inch and the S GT-line on 18s. The gloss-black roof rails are a nice touch and add an upmarket look to the Niro.
Note: These prices do not include government or dealer delivery charges. Contact your local Kia dealer for drive-away prices.
Infotainment
The model we tested has a 10.25-inch central screen as well as a 10.25-inch instrument display. These sit in a wide panel that stretches across most of the front of the dash area. The quality is high and it’s easy to read them at a quick glance. This is an important safety feature as, despite my best intentions, I do tend to look at the centre screen to change radio stations or for other reasons.
Styling

By Tara Murray Diggers Rest will need to quickly forget about its qualifying final loss to Wallan if it’s to keep its Riddell District Football League season alive.Heading into the match most people could have seen either team getting the win, but no one predicted what occurred at Romsey Park onTheSaturday.Magpies tore the Burras apart in a 17.14 (116)-3.5 (23) win. The Burras were kept goal less in the first half and trailed by 51 points at the main break. The pain continued in the second half, with the Magpies winning through to face Riddell for a spot in the grand final. Having lost to the Magpies two weeks in a row, Burras coach Jamie Lobb knows they have work to do. He was lost for answers after that performance.“It’sprobably something we don’t want to look too far into,” he said. “ We had a stinker in all parts of the ground and not something you want to dwell on. “We won’t look too deep into it and we’ll focus on ourselves and what we can do to get back into this finals series.” Lobb said there were a few positives out of the game, but overall they need to be better otherwise they would be knocked out in straight sets. It was all single goal kickers for the Burras, with Patrick Jackson and Justin Tenaglia named their best. For the Magpies, who were without the competition’s leading goal kicker Matthew Perri, Todd Muldoon and Nathan Fowler kicked four goals each.4 Jarryd Bonello was named best on ground. Lobb said for his side now it was about taking it week by week, having lost the second chance. They were sitting top of the table heading into the final round. “We need to focus on ourselves,” he said. “Our best footy is better than anyone else’s, we need to get back to finding that footy. “We will get a few players back next week which will naturally help. Personnel changes will make a difference but our performance was more than that.” “We need to get in the right headspace and have a good week on the track.” The Burras will face either Macedon or Romsey in a knockout semi final. The Magpies will play Riddell in the other semi final.Among those set to return for the Burras for the semi final are Matthew Krul, Luke Ronaldson, Taylor Hine and Mitchell Day. The Hawks under-19s will face the Western Rams in their semi final.
Woodend-Hesket’s first foray in finals in the Riddell District Football League A-grade competition has been a successful one. The Hawks, who finished the regular season in second spot, showed no nerves as they accounted for Diggers Rest on Saturday in their qualifying final on Saturday. Hawks coach Meg Grbac said it was pretty exciting for the club having grown and developed throughout the years. “It was super exciting,” she said. “The club has been amazing and so supportive. “The girls were really good and the under-19s won and got the double chance as well. It was a good day for the club.” Grbac said there were always some nerves come finals, but for them it was about sticking with what had worked. She said they had a chat during the week and relied on the more experienced players to make sure they were ready come game time. “We were pleased with how we dealt with it,” she “Oursaid.first quarter was our best quarter of the game so we were able to contain our nerves.”TheHawks were able to hold onto the lead and ended up winning, 32-27. The match started in rain and difficult conditions, before drying out in the second half.Grbac said that the court drying out worked to their advantage and they were able to slow the ball down and control the match. She said they were thrilled with how they played overall. “It was really good,” she said. “We had a few rotations and showed some good depth with players coming off the bench. “We were hoping to do that in finals and show some versatility coming onto the court. “Diggers is a great side and got within two goals. I’m super proud.”
The Sunbury Lions finished their Ballarat Football League season on a high, beating Bacchus Marsh. The Lions dominated from the first whistle and were able to extend the lead throughout on the way to a 15.19 (109)-6.8 (44) win. Leigh Brennan kicked five goals for the Lions in the win. The Lions finished the season in ninth with five wins. Big V Sunbury Jets stars are among those nominated for the Big V awards. Ish Sanders, Gerald Blackshear and Maxwell Barkleley are nominated for the most valuable player and all-star five for the men’s state championship division. Trevor Clayton has been nominated for the defensive players of the year and John White coach of the year. In the women’s state championship, Ida Andersson and Maria Jespersen have been nominated for most valuable player and all-star five, and Ben Draper coach of the year. Bendigo FL A final round win by Kyneton wasn’t enough for the side to play finals in Bendigo Football League. The Tigers came away with a 19.19 (133)-4.8 (32) win against Maryborough, but with Sandhurst coming away with a 27.16 (178)-7.2 (44) win, the Tigers missed out on finals by percentage. Gisborne, which claimed the minor premiership, finished the regular season with a 17.15 (117)-5.7 (37) win against Eaglehawk. The Bulldogs have a bye in the first week of finals. AFL combine Calder Cannons duo Paul Pascu and Rye Penny have been selected to attend the AFL combine. Pascu is from Oak Park, while Penny is the latest young gun to come out of Gisborne. The state combine lists are selected via club interest levels, with players requiring a nomination from at least two AFL clubs to be invited. The Melbourne combine will be held on October 9.
While now full on confidence, Meldrum knows they are the underdogs this week in their semi final with Diggers Rest. The Burras were smashed by Wallan in their qualifying final. Wallan faces Riddell for a spot in the grand final in the other semi final this week. “I saw the game,” he said. “Wallan were clinical while Diggers Rest would be disappointed after such a strong season. “All the pressure is on them and we go in with zero expectations. Everyone is expecting them to come out firing and respond. “We don’t deserve to go in as favourites and the guys have embraced that.”
By Tara Murray Macedon has shown that it can’t be discounted in the finals race after an upset win against Romsey in a Riddell District Football League elimination final. After sneaking into finals and having not beaten a team above them, the Cats were the back runner of the five teams left. But on Sunday they produced some of their best football of the year to knock off the Redbacks.TheRedbacks kicked the first two goals of the game and didn’t score another until late in the fourth quarter. The Cats found their groove in between to win, 8.8 (56)-4.8 (32). They led by 16 points at quarter, but Meldrum said it could have been a different story. “Our pressure and intensity was really good,” he said. “They didn’t make most of it and kicked 2.5, if it had been 5.2 it would have been a different story.“They didn’t capitalise the way they would have liked and we stuck fat.” While the Redbacks were wasteful in front of goal early, the Cats were anything but. They kicked 6.1 for the second quarter to lead by 21 points at the main break. “We then took our opportunities in the second quarter with the breeze and we nailed it,” Meldrum said. “We got the ball out of the middle and the pressure was up. We were able to capitalise on our opportunities, which pretty much got us theAfterwin.half time, the teams kicked two goals each. Meldrum was thrilled with the defensive pressure across the whole ground. Matthew Knox kicked three goals for the Cats, while Jason Cooke got two goals. Jordan Dyer was named their best. Nathan Rayment was the Redbacks best. Meldrum said after the tough year they’ve had it was satisfying to get a finals win, with their best performance of the season.
