A community group is petitioning Melton council and the state government to fix a “serious issue” that is impacting the safety of school students in Melton South. A group of residents has started a petition calling for the construction of a school crossing on Rees Road in Melton South, in an area where students from four different schools cross the road.

The petition that has amassed almost 250 signatures.During the August 15 Melton council meeting, councillor Ashleigh Vandenberg called for council to investigate buidling the crossing.Nasim Uddin, a parent of a student who attends Al Iman College on Rees Road, said there were often road accidents due to a lack of school crossing. “At the roundabout, when kids try to cross the road, some drivers stop to give way but then a car behind will crash into them,” he said.“We just need attention as soon as possible, this is a very serious issue.” Mr Uddin said parents were also concerned about the lack of footpath on the west side of the road to access the bus stop, forcing those using public transport to walk through the mud.“Alot of parents, we have seen women with prams or people with mobility scooters, they have to drive over the grass,” he said.

“It’s open to everybody, old people, young people, all sorts of different people come to the club.

By Olivia Condous Melton residents are still being drastically affected by local doctor shortages, as the entire state’s healthcare system continues to struggle. While the most recent crisis concerns the number of bulk-billing GP clinics across Victoria dwindling, many Melton residents have reported they can’t get an appointment at Meltonall. resident Aileen Battye said she travelled more than an hour to take her two-year-old son to see her previous regular GP in the eastern suburbs. “Everytime my son gets sent home from childcare for a sniffle … it can be about two or three days before I can get him into our regular doctor,” she said.

‘‘ I can’t get anything local, so I’ve got to travel out of the area ’’ - Aileen Battye

“We feel it’s like a really good opportunity as a school just to be inclusive, to learn about different illnesses and disabilities,” he said. “So hopefully with that awareness … we feel like we create that broader and more engaging community spirit amongst everyone.”

Diggers Rest Primary School teacher Bradley Kemp, his daughters Willow, nine-months, and Isla, 3, with school pupils and principal Sheridan Thomas. School steps up for cerebral palsy

One of Digger’s Rest youngest community members is inspiring others to step up to raise awareness and funds for cerebral palsy. Willow Kemp is the nine-month-old daughter of Diggers Rest Primary School teacher Bradley Kemp and was diagnosed with cerebral palsy shortly after she was born. The school community is taking part in the STEPtember fundraiser run by the Cerebral Palsy Alliance, in support of Willow and to raise awareness about the disability.

Olivia Condous

Melton mayor Goran Kesic said extensive planning was going into creating an entertaining festival for both residents and visitors to enjoy.

For STEPtember, each class at the school will use a pedometer to track their daily steps at recess and lunch time in a competition to reach the highest step count, all while raising money to support those affected by cerebral palsy. At the centre of the inspiration for the school’s fundraiser is Willow, who Mr Kemp said “smiles all the time”. “The resilience and things that she’s had to overcome is probably more than what some people would go through in a lifetime, she’s a trooper,” he said. Mr Kemp said his family was very grateful for all those in the community who were supporting the cause. “People are amazing, in times of need for people in the community… people step up.”

Frustration over doctor access

“I can’t get anything local, so I’ve got to travel out of the area. “It means I have to take days off work for it and I still have to pay his childcare fees for those days as well. “It creates a lot of stress and pressure … [and] frustration.”

On a social media post, other Melton residents shared similar frustrations about a lack of available appointments locally. “You can’t get an appointment anywhere, places aren’t taking new patients and when you try to book at your regular clinic they are booked out two plus weeks,” one resident said.

“This is why I travel to Gisborne to see a doctor, a few friends have started going there now, what a joke having to wait two plus weeks to see a doctor,” another resident said. In a letter to Melton mayor Goran Kesic, Western Victoria MP Gayle Tierney said a solution to increase the number of local GPs was a “challenging issue.”.

“I fully appreciate that your community is experiencing substantive population growth, and this makes it even more imperative that a solution to increase the number of local GPs is explored and implemented,” Ms Tierney said.

Melton’s artistic talent is currently on show for all to celebrate, with two local artists displaying their work in exhibitions. ‘Elements of Hannah Watts’ by Christian Hansen is currently being exhibited at Melton Library until November 1 and Julie Zapasa’s ‘Anima Animus’ exhibition is being displayed at CS Gallery until November 27. Hansen has lived in Melton for the last 10 years and said he always enjoyed going to Hannah Watts Park to relax, but was intrigued by the woman behind the name of the park.

The number of crimes reported in Melton has significantly dropped over the previous financial year, according to crime review data. Victoria Police conducted a crime review for the Brimbank and Melton Police Service Area over a 21-week period in order to gather data on the number of crime reports, which recorded a 15.4 per cent drop. Melton Inspector Lisa Prentice-Evans said police were “definitely happy” with the result. “It coincides with an increased police presence in the community and a focus on neighbourhood policing,” she said. Inspector Prentice-Evans said while pandemic restrictions last year contributed to the drop in reports, the decrease in serious offences was “incredibly positive”. “Police are working hard with our external partners to implement early intervention initiatives to try to divert young people away from crime,” she said. fromcrimeAccordingtopolicedata, themostprevalentreportinMeltonwastheft, particularlymotorvehicles.

“All snakes are just as placid as each other, snakes are never ever aggressive, they are always just reacting or defensive,” he said.

By Olivia Condous With warmer weather approaching, Melton and Moorabool residents are being urged to take precautionary measures to minimise incidents with snakes. Snake season officially begins in spring, when snakes emerge from winter hibernation as the temperatures warm up. Jarrod Bingham, a former Moorabool councillor and professional snake catcher, has worked in the Melton and Moorabool region for many years and urged residents to recall common safety measures after two years of lockdown.“During COVID, we were in lockdown for a number of years, now we’re getting some of that freedom back and people just need to remember that we do live in an environment where there are snakes,” he said. Mr Bingham advised that when spring arrives, residents can prevent snake encounters by mowing their lawns, clearing rubbish piles, trimming trees and bushes in order to mitigate hiding places.

He recommended that residents also be vigilant in keeping doors to the home shut during the hotter months, as when the temperature reaches above 30 degrees, snakes may seek shade inside.

Business leaders need

to inspire

You can find many definitions for this: • “Organising a group of people to achieve a common goal.” – Wikipedia. • “Bringing out the best in others and yourself.” - Liberty Leadership Training • “Leadership is influence, nothing more and nothing less.” - John C Maxwell. But the one I like best is the one I recently learnt while watching a Jim Collins webcast: • “The art of getting people to want to do what must be done.” – Jim Collins. There are some very subtle but important aspects to this definition, in particular, noting it is an art and not a science. This implies leadership cannot be affected by simply adhering to a set of rules but instead includes within it an inherent element of creativity. The other key element is it is not about orderingpeopletodothingsbuttrueleadership is about influence so that people ‘want to do what must be done’. Great leaders bring people with them through vision and engaging the hearts and minds of those that decide to follow. Think about the great leaders you know –it is through their words and actions, not their directives, that they inspire action in others. Examples include Martin Luther King who had a dream, John F Kennedy who created the vision of landing a man on the moon when the US was trailing Russia in the exploration of space back in 1961 and Winston Churchill who inspired an entire nation to rally when it looked like Great Britain would be defeated in World War II. In business, there is a neat distinction between management and leadership that I would like to share: “Management is about doing things right while leadership is about doing the right things.” This simply explains why some managers don’t make great leaders and also why some leaders aren’t necessarily good at doing things right. So back to the initial question: ‘Are good leaders born or made?’ In working with business leaders, we sometimes use personality profiling to enable a better understanding of their own natural behavioural preferences, i.e. the things they do naturally well and the sort of things they might struggle with. This approach typically associates a person with a profile type that has certain discernible characteristics such as introvert vs extrovert or being well organised and detail-oriented as opposed to being a big picture, creative person who thinks outside theDependingsquare. upon the nature of the leadership role, the specific characteristics that a person naturally possesses may make them more, or less, naturally suited to that role. However, once leaders are aware of their natural behavioural preferences, it is quite possible to work on those that are hindering the desired leadership characteristics and so, to some extent, good leadership can be said to be made. From a personal perspective, many years ago when I first became a manager, I remember being terrified of public speaking. It was far from natural for me, but I knew I had to learn this skill if I was going to be effective in my role. Many years of practice has helped me overcome this fear and whilst not an expert in this space, it demonstrates that it is possible to learn to overcome such limitations.

A lot of progress has been made since Melton Christian College announced the news of its new campus in late 2020. Over the past 18 months the school community has watched construction unfold across 83 acres of land on Coburns Road, just north of Central Melton. Excitement has grown in the college community as cranes, steel and trucks have moved across the site. The roof and panels are up on the gymnasium, ground works are continuing, and more infrastructure is being put into place in readiness for classroom buildings and that will be starting at Toolern Vale.

By Derek Ogden, Marque Motoring Some would say, not before time, Jeep has brought back an extra row of seats to its Grand Cherokee large sports utility vehicle range, turning it into a full seven-seat SUV. While at it, the maker has boosted its iconic off-roader with more technology. The replacement for the big five-seater, the long wheelbase L comes in three versions, beginning with the Grand Cherokee L Night Eagle, selling for $82,250, plus on-roads, then the mid-range L Limited ($87,950) and the L Summit Reserve ($115,450).

A new-generation five-seat model - with the same technology and styling as the seven-seat L - will follow to Australia later this year, with the option of 4xe plug-in hybrid power.

All models are powered by the tried-and-tested 3.6 litre Pentastar naturally aspirated V6 engine, delivering 210 kW of peak power and 344 Nm of maximum torque to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission. The flagship Summit adds a more advanced four-wheel-drive system with a low-range transfer case.

Safety Top-shelf safety features take the Grand Cherokee L Summit to new heights. These include adaptive cruise control with stop/go, full speed collision warning with autonomous braking and pedestrian and cyclist detection. Then there’s blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert and, last but not least, active laneAllmanagement.theseusea selection of loud warning beeps at times hard to pinpoint the source of the potential trouble, while driving assistance, such as active lane management, can be over-intrusive.

Interior The increase in the horizontal exterior allows for a boost to the wheelbase and cabin space in general, something not lost on occupants aboard the test vehicle. In a first for Jeep, the Grand Cherokee L boasts Uberesque seating for a driver and six passengers in space and comfort. All three rows are easily accessed, even the power-operated third row, with the second row tumbling well out of the way, leaving the back to weigh in with adult leg room. Carry-on bits and pieces find a home in a range of storage spaces, including a deep box in the centre console and bottle holders in the centre and doors all round. Rear passengers have the advantage of retractable blinds, just in time for summer heatwave predictions. Luggage is not left behind in the storage stakes, with 487 litres available with all three rows in use, leading up to a cavernous 2395 litres with the two sets of rear seatbacks folded flat. There’s a cabin-wide cubby under the floor where the jack is stored. The flagship Summit Reserve (on test) included Palermo quilted leather, 21-inch wheels, a McIntosh premium sound system, front-seat ventilation and massaging, four-zone climate control and air suspension, while a $5500 Advanced Technology Group, with head-up display, wireless phone charging, night vision camera and front interactive passenger display, was added, taking the price to more than $120 grand, before on-road costs.

The Grand Cherokee has become grander, with increased dimensions, seven seats and boosted technology. (Pictures: Supplied)

Apple CarPlay wireless support means an iPhone can be connected without having to plug it into the vehicle. The system brings contacts, audio apps, Apple Maps and more on board, all through the Uconnect system. A 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster looks after sat nav, along with mechanical features such as tyre pressure monitoring and driving aids. There’s a roof-mounted rear facing ‘kid cam’ camera that will police questionable behaviour in the back two rows. It even has a zoom mode.

For a vehicle so big, at more than five metres long, the Grand Cherokee L Summit is well proportioned - width more than two metres, yet height well under two metres - gives the SUV a bold yet sleek aerodynamic coupe character.Oneonlooker compared the test car looks to a Range Rover, which in this case, was a bit of a stretch, literally. Indeed, at more than 5.2 metres long, the ‘L’ is easy to find in a crowded car park, as it inevitably sticks out from the standard car space. The front consists of an upper metallic grille with Jeep’s trademark seven slots flanked by LED headlamps. Below is a full grille-width air vent incorporating LED daytime running lights. From the rear, the SUV belies its bulk with simple horizontal lines incorporating wraparound tail lights and twin alloy tipped supportalloyexhaustpipes.Sideon,21-inchpolishedpaintedwheels,astandardfitmentonSummit,asportystreetpresence.

It’s onwards and upwards towards the Victoria Derby for excitement machine Catch A Wave, who bounced back from a shock defeat in devastating style on Saturday night.
