Disabled and proud
Larissa MacFarlane acquired a brain injury 24 years ago, which she said allowed her to become the artist she is today.
“I had a brain injury which literally changed my brain, I had to learn how to talk and walk and through that I also became an artist, which I had never done before,” she said.
MacFarlane showed her most recent art in an exhibition at the Sunshine Arts Space. The exhibition titled ‘Practising our pride, remembering our ancestors’, featured a series of framed lino cuts.
“Through this exhibition I am trying to find new ways to practise disability pride and one of those ways has been looking at disability rights history,” she said.
“I have made portraits of some of our disabled ancestors who have died recently, all who have made massive contributions to the rights and the lives of disabled people in Australia and beyond.”
July is Disability Pride Month, which is of great significance for MacFarlane.
“My work over the years has explored disability pride and trying to change the ways we see people with disabilities through a negative lens. I am trying to re frame that in line with the social model of disability,” she said.
Unscripted question call
By Hannah Hammoud
A Brimbank councillor wants council to establish a regular public forum to allow the community to ask live, unscripted questions of council.
Councillor Maria Kerr will raise the idea as a notice of motion during Tuesday’s council meeting.
Cr Kerr said introducing a regular public forum would promote “transparency” and allow the community to hold representatives to account.
“It’s now up to each individual councillor to decide if they support transparency and accountability,” she said. “I would be happy to put myself in front of any resident and answer any questions they might have.”
Cr Kerr said she has been overwhelmed by the amount of support she has received from the community in regards to the motion.
“The reason why I’m putting up this motion is because I want to give the community a voice and I myself want to put myself forward to be scrutinised,” she said. “This forum is for the
communitytoholdustoaccountbecauseatthe end of the day they pay our wage.”
Cr Kerr said Monee Valley council hosts a public forum once a month.
The Moonee Valley council website states thatthepublicforumstakeplaceinalessformal setting than council meetings and provide another opportunity for residents to play a role in civic matters.
Moonee Valley council allows residents to raise questions directly and without notice, unlike council meetings where questions must be submitted beforehand and are read aloud by
council on behalf of the resident.
At the previous Brimbank council meeting held on June 20, the meeting was adjourned for 15 minutes as multiple residents seated in the public gallery continued to shout in protest of the draft LGBTQIA+ Action Plan.
Cr Kerr said there is currently no mechanism which allows residents to directly engage with council representatives.
“People are frustrated and upset. The communityisn’tabletoaskusquestionsdirectly andwealsoaren’tabletoanswertheirquestions …thisisn’tinthespiritofdemocracy,”shesaid.

Fighting for disability inclusion
By Hannah Hammoud
As many Melburnians continue to enjoy life after the pandemic with the return of in-person activities, some in the disabled community are feeling socially isolated.
Disability advocate Shannon Meilak is asking Brimbank council to level with the disability community and provide more frequent and consistent online events.
The challenges of the pandemic forced many councils, including Brimbank, to pivot their events and activities online. The virtual shift allowed many living with disabilities to be included in spaces where it would normally be
difficult to attend in-person.
Ms Meilak said many councils have rushed to return to “normalcy”, and in the process, stripped the accessibility of online events and activities away from the disabled community.
“Many disabled people for the first time in their lives were finally included when the world went into lockdown. Now, council is continuing to cut back on online events and the disabled community has been left socially isolated,” she said.
Ms Meilak said online options have been reduced to such a level that they are barely available. What exists of the almost bare
From waste to fashion
Award-winning artist Ruth Downes is holding an exhibition that repurposes found and upcycled materials – from razors to masks, piano keys to aircraft headsets – into wearable art, at CS Gallery.
‘Barely Wearable: body adornment for the age of overconsumption’ is a continuation of Downes’ passion for re-appropriating everyday materials and objects to celebrate their beauty.
Downes said that as long as she can remember, she has always been “obsessed” with wastage and recycling.
“I’m naturally frugal and always try to make a little go a long way. While my artwork does make a strong environmental statement, my starting point was really a fascination with these ‘low value’ materials that tend to be invisible in our affluent culture,” she said.
“These everyday materials have an intrinsic beauty that I cannot ignore so I hope others will learn to treasure them too. While this alone will not solve our many and varied environmental problems, a change in mindset is essential to tackle the bigger picture.
“I’magreatbelieverthatcapital‘A’artcanbe extremely intimidating for the casual observer. I’m particularly pleased that ‘Barely Wearable’ often appeals to people who aren’t normally found in the rarefied world of an art gallery. If my work helps create a window into a broader appreciation of art I will be delighted.”
Barely Wearable will be on display at CS Gallery until October 29.

selection are what Ms Meilak describes as “mundane” business-focussed activities.
Brimbank community wellbeing director Lynley Dumble said council is committed to providing a diverse range of programs in response to community need and feedback.
“Council will continue to offer some online programs and events and continue to seek feedback to ensure that the programs offered are in response to community need and are offered in the most appropriate delivery method,” she said.
A member of a local disability social group, Ms Meilak said there is overwhelming support from the community who want to
see more online options. Ms Meilak said that access to community events, workshops and consultations via online mechanisms is often the only way for many people to participate. Live-streaming and interactive online gatherings removes one of the common barriers to participation for people with physical or intellectual disabilities.
“Brimbank is known for talking about our diversity and how good it is and how we are one of the most diverse [local government area’s] in Victoria … and yet there is an entire faction of people being excluded,” she said.
“We shouldn’t need to fight to be included in our own community.”
Plant a tree in Brimbank
The Friends of Kororoit Creek (FOKC) are encouraging locals to get their hands dirty and join in a community working bee for National Tree Day.
The team of green thumbs will be working at the Bug Rug, a local spot just off of the Kororoit Creek trail in Sunshine West, to mark the national day.
FOKC president Jessica Gerger said the group is planning to plant scattered trees along with lots of shrubs, wildflowers and grasses, all of which are vital for biodiversity and carbon sequestration.
“It’s brilliant to see everybody out there working toward a common goal for the betterment of our local environment,” she said.
“It’s a very social day and everyone is happy to be thereout in nature surrounded by birds.
It’s a beautiful day and lots of fun.”
Ms Gerger said she is expecting many people in the community to head down on the day and help beautify the local landscape.
“Everyone is invited to come down and join us. It is easy to get involved and there is something for everyone, whether it be helping to mix water crystals, planting shrubs or filling up water buckets, there will be activities for all ages and abilities,” she said.
FOKC will host their National Tree Day working bee on Saturday, July 30, from 10am-1pm,atTheBugRug,59SandersAvenue, Sunshine West. Details: https://treeday. planetark.org/site/10028678

Residents call on MP to front up

St Albans residents are demanding their concerns be heard as fears for safety continue to grow.

“She needs to get out in the community and be present, we don’t feel she represents us and we don’t feel safe.

Nominate a top senior
Last year, Taylors Lakes local Santhana Selvendra was recognised for her decades of volunteeringinthecommunityattheVictorian Senior of the Year Awards.
The awards for 2023 are now open and Ms Selvendra is encouraging others to nominate seniors who are making significant contributions to the community.
Ms Selvandra said the awards are about recognising ordinary, everyday people who have worked hard to support the community.
“Even nominating someone is your acknowledgement of their hard work and dedication,” she said.
“ … Often it is people who have developed a project over a period of time – from the outset when things are difficult and there is limited funding or support, to later watching it evolve and flourish years later.”
When Ms Selvendra migrated to Australia with her family in the ‘70s, there was little available for her Hindu
community.
At the 2022 awards, Ms Selvendra received a Council on the Ageing (COTA) award for her ongoingsupporttoculturallyandlinguistically diverse (CALD) communities. She was a driving force to the establishment of multiple religious temples in Sunshine, Carrum Downs and The Basin.
“The awards are a valuable recognition of the historical achievement of people, also demonstrating that people can keep contributing to our society at any stage of their life,” she said.
“Often when you are starting something you aresobusydevelopingitthatthereisn’tthetime to promote it fully, it is only years later that you can look back and see what has evolved.”

In response to the criticism, Ms Suleyman cited the state government’s “record” $4.5 billion investment to support Victoria Police, including funding for more than 3600 new officers.
“My deepest thoughts and sympathies are with those in Brimbank who have been affected by knife crime. Violence of any kind is unacceptable,” Ms Suleyman said.

Charges laid over katamine haul

A Sunshine North man is one of three men charged following the largest seizure of ketamine in Australian history on Tuesday, July 11.
The 33-year-old from Sunshine North was charged with importation of a commercial quantity of border controlled drugs, namely Ketamine, and attempting to possess commercial quantities of unlawfully imported border controlled drugs.
A 37-year-old Altona man and a 32-year-old
Hoppers Crossing man were also arrested at a Lara property.
The Sunshine North man and the Altona man are accused of facilitating the import of 80kg of ketamine hidden in tubs of cement sent from Spain to Australia.
The Hoppers Crossing man is accused of attempting to take possession of the illicit drugs.
A search of a Lara property uncovered another 80kg of suspected ketamine buried in the ground, while subsequent raids on properties in Altona, Yarraville

Over the years, the Mt Derrimut Golf and Community Club has found a home across three different courses. Now, the former Sunshine Golf Club is celebrating its 100-year anniversary.
Vice president Chris Saldanha joined the club as a teenager and has spent more than 25 years on the green. He said the club’s history includes periods of significant challenges which threatened to force closure of the club.
“This milestone is reward for all the hard work, blood sweat and tears put in over the years by many of our loyal and generous members, and who today continue to support the club, securing our future and setting us up for another 100 years of success,” he said.
The club hosted a centenary dinner celebration attended by many current and former members as well as professional golfer Craig Parry.
Mr Saldanha said the highlight of the night was hearing reflections from Mr Parry who

In total, 174kg of ketamine was seized with an estimated wholesale value of $6.9 million.
The raids were conducted as part of OperationWoodgatewhichbeganinMayafter the AFP were tipped off by Spanish authorities about suspicious cargo sent to Australia.
AFP officers conducted a controlled operationwhichinvolvedthe80kgofketamine being delivered to a property in Merrimu near

It’s alleged the Sunshine North man then transported it to Lara where the other two syndicate members were waiting and all three were arrested.
The men face the possibility of life imprisonment if convicted.
AFP Transnational Serious and Organised Crime Detective Superintendent Anthony Hall said seizing such a large amount of drugs would prevent community harm and send a message to international drug syndicates.

Arson spree
Police have announced an operation targeting organised crime syndicates believed to be linked to a recent series of arson attacks within Brimbank and across Melbourne. Authorities are linking at least 11 incidents dating back to June 24 to ongoing disputes between two criminal groups with links to Middle Eastern organised crime entities. The incidents took place in Caroline Springs, Fraser Rise, Ravenhall, Greenvale, Collingwood, Maribyrnong, Oakleigh, Fawkner, and Port Melbourne. Police are still working to determine the motive for the overall ongoing dispute and are speaking further to the residents and business owners of the addresses, as well as any associates, in order to try and understand the reason for the attacks.

Musical connections
During the “doom and gloom” of COVID, Fraser Rise resident Alan Brown looked around and saw people losing jobs, and his community feeling disconnected and alone.
He asked himself “what can I do to bring some sunshine and light into an otherwise gloomy situation?”
For Mr Brown, the answer was music.
Mr Brown had been playing guitar since he was eight years old. In the aftermath of COVID he used his talents to bring the community together for free guitar lessons, which he has been teaching at the Fraser Rise Community Centre since 2021.
Mr Brown’s classes invite people to learn
through his self-designed method, 5 Minutes to Music.
“People think when they go along to guitar lessons that they’re going to learn a lot of theory and terms and wonder when they’ll play music. I reverse that,” he said.
“I’mgoingtohaveyouplayingasongwithin five minutes … then I want [the students] to spend five minutes each day practicing what I teach each week.
“If you can do that … then after the term you will be able to play at least 20,000 simple songs.”
Liam McNally
Senior students have the opportunity to enter the My First Speech competition. The competition challenges students in years 10, 11 and 12 to imagine they have just been elected to Parliament and record a 90-second speech on a topic they are passionate about. The winners will be flown to Canberra to deliver their speeches at Parliament House. They will also participate in a program that will deepen their understanding of how the legislative process works. Submission deadline for the competition is 5pm on August 11.

Sunshine locals roll up sleeves
Red Cross Lifeblood paid a visit to Sunshine with a pop-up blood donor centre, where Brimbank locals rolled their sleeves up and made more than 100 crucial blood donations.
Sunshine resident Kelly Hawkridge’s appointment at the pop-up centre was her first blood donation. She said she knows all too well the life-saving impact blood donations have.
“My mother was in a really terrible accident about three years ago and she had several operations and needed blood transfusions to save her life,” Ms Hawkridge said.
“Donating blood is just a small thing to be able to do to really help people, so why not do it?”
The Sunshine pop-up will be back in October, and Ms Hawkridge has already made an appointment for when the centre returns. Lifeblood spokesperson Elle Giles said one in 30 people donate but one in three will need bloodintheirlifetime.Shesaidthatbydonating blood, localscanbecomethe‘lifeblood’oftheir community.
“We will be back in Sunshine in October, if you’ve ever thought about donating blood then you can book an appointment by visiting our website, through our app or calling us on 13 14 95,” she said.
Lifeblood recently announced that tattooed Aussies can now donate blood just a week after getting a fresh tattoo, potentially contributing up to 10,000 extra donations each year.
The latest rule change reduces the wait time between getting a tattoo and donating blood from four months to just seven days.

New name for park on the cards
By Hannah Hammoud
Works at Sydenham Park are tracking along, including plans to rename the reserve in Keilor North to an Indigenous title.
At the last Brimbank council meeting, an update was provided on the status of works at Sydenham Park, which included some minor delays.
A number of projects are being planned and delivered which were labelled as running mostly on time.
The renaming process will be launched alongside the establishment of the Sydenham
Park Consultative Committee and will engage firstly with the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation as the Traditional Owners and the Brimbank Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Committee (BATSICC).
Brimbank mayor Bruce Lancashire said the changingofthenameofSydenhamParkwillbe an exciting, collaborative process for council.
“This idea came from the community to change the name to an Aboriginal name and I think that’s incredibly appropriate for a park that we see as having significant conservation, environmental, tourism and wellbeing aspects
Simply stunning stories
Mother of God Primary School pupils in Ardeer participated in a series of writing workshopstowriteandpublishtheirveryown picture story book, titled ‘Simply Stunning Stories’.
Pupils in years 2 and 3 worked alongside children’s book author Heather Gallagher, and classroom teacher Rosemary Nicolas to create their own stories and images for the book across four weeks.
Mother of God family school partnership leader Greg Woolford said the writing program, supported by Australian children’s education charity Ardoch, allows pupils to put theirskillsintopractice, withthecollaborative book being placed on display in Brimbank libraries.
“It gives children a chance to see the connection between what we learn in class and how we can use these skills to make a book,” he said.
“So having a published book that is going into libraries, that they can take home and show their families really explicitly shows children the power of their learning being applied to real world situations in a number of ways.”
MrWoolfordsaidthepupils’wereoverjoyed with the opportunity to create stories as long or as short as they wanted, as well as being able to illustrate it.
“Working with a real life author was also exciting as well as the printing of the book and a party at the end where the whole school and guests came together to launch it,” he said.

to it’s sporting facilities,” he said.
Stage one works of the Sydenham Park projects include the construction of a shared use path with a lookout and nature play area, the installation of an access gate near the golf course pavilion and the installation of signage for wayfinding.
The official opening of stage one works will be held during September.
Councillor Virginia Tachos said the Sydenham Park project is one of the most exciting openings for council.
“When we sat in the council in the first term, we were looking at an old master plan. It was
a rocky road ahead with the council, there’s a lot of passion in this particular park, and understandably we can’t get things moving fast enough,” she said. “ … To get to our stage one [works], with completion of the new shared use park, is indeed one of the most exciting steps that I have experienced.”
Projects within the precinct are being delivered by staff across a range of council departments and includes the involvement of numerous external stakeholders. An internal cross branch steering group has been established to manage and monitor these projects.

In the Council and Wellbeing Plan, our collective vision for our city, one of our priorities is for a city that protects and enhances its natural environment - its grasslands, forests, waterways, flora and fauna – for future generations.
You told us that having close access to green open space was important to all our health and wellbeing and that we needed a whole-of-community commitment to address climate change to ensure a thriving natural environment for current and future generations. And above all, you told us to plant more trees. Lots of trees.
That’s why I’m inviting you to join us next Saturday at 1pm for a special tree planting event at Botanica Springs Childrens and Community Centre to celebrate National Tree Day!
Starting in 1996, Planet Ark’s National Tree Day has grown into Australia’s largest community tree planting and nature care event.
Put on some boots and yard clothes and join us to help plant some trees and shrubs in our backyard.
Everything else is provided. We just need your enthusiasm.
We will also have a free BBQ and drinks for everyone who takes part.
I would also invite everyone to go to conversations.melton.vic.gov.au and have your say on four parks across our city that Council will be upgrading over the coming months.
Feel free to contact me about Watts Ward or Council related issues on 0409 951 020 or email at: lara.carli@melton.vic.gov.au or visit my Facebook page at: facebook.com/Cr.LaraCarli

Lake Caroline is one of the most iconic recreational spaces in our community. Vegetation around the lake provides vital habitat for fauna, and the lake and surrounds feature public art, outdoor gym equipment, walking tracks and host exciting Council and community events.
Last week, Councillors participated in a workshop with Council officers and consulting firm, TCL, to kick off work on our Lake Caroline Masterplan and Activation Strategy.
This is a very exciting project that will set out Council’s broad vision for the lake, its future use and the entertainment, hospitality, and recreational activities our community can look forward to, and enjoy.
Residents will be able to provide input into the development of the Masterplan and Activation Strategy in coming weeks. Keep an eye out on Council’s Facebook page
@cityofmelton or our Melton Conversations page at conversations.melton.vic.gov.au for further information.
In other exciting news, work is also set to commence on a masterplan for the new Plumpton Aquatic Leisure Centre.
The design and masterplanning process will run over the next 12 months, and will outline the proposed features of the new facility including indoor pool, a gym, warm water pools, a water sensory experience and community café. Importantly, the final design will be developed with the community’s input and Council looks forward to engaging with our community as the project continues to progress.
You can contact me regarding any Council related matters. I can be contacted via email at kathy.majdlik@melton.vic.gov.au or on 0412 584 058.

Safety service marks one year
A new service to stamp out unwanted sexual behaviour on public transport has received more than 1500 notifications in its first year. STOPIT, a text-based notification service, launched on July 11 last year to help combat sexual offending on public transport and give commuters greater confidence when they travel.
It’s the first service of its kind in Australia.
Victoria Police analysis shows more than 40 per cent of notifications to STOPIT related to threatening and offensive behaviour such as verbal abuse and harassment.
Almost one in five notifications related to

unwanted sexual behaviour. This can include catcalling, sexual gestures, non-consensual touching and flashing.
Since inception STOPIT has led to 13 arrests, including a 24-year-old man who was charged after performing allegedly explicit acts and making inappropriate sexual comments towards a woman on a city-bound Werribee line train on November 11 last year.
Another arrest was a 33-year-old man charged after two witnesses saw him allegedly perform an explicit act towards a woman on a city-bound Sunbury line train on September

Across all the Brimbank library branches, there is no shortage of events and activities to fill your day up.
Whether it be ‘sensory storytime’ at the Deer Park Library or ‘practise your English’ sessions at the Sunshine Library, the what’s on’ section of the Brimbank Libraries website has something for everyone.
‘Create and Chat’ is a regular activity held at the Sydenham Library, where locals are encouraged to bring their craft projects along and join others for an hour of creativity and chat.
Brimbank mayor Bruce Lancashire said the five Brimbank Libraries are a valued community asset that provide much needed servicesandprogramstothelocalcommunity.
“Our ‘Create and Chat’ activity helps build social connectedness while encouraging adults to be creative. People of all skill levels are encouraged to bring their knitting,
stitching or any other craft projects and enjoy creativity, a cup of tea and a chat,” he said.
With a variety of programs on offer throughout the day, Cr Lancashire said libraries play a key role in encouraging lifelong learning across Brimbank.
“It’s important to have lots of frequent activities available for the community as it helps combat social isolation and brings the community together.”

MY PLACE
Kings Park resident Fiona Demark is an adventure seeking local who does not let being blind stop her from achieving her dreams. She tells Hannah Hammoud about her connection to Brimbank and the importance of keeping a positive mindset.
I am an inspirational speaker and coach and am passionate about helping others. I bring a unique aspect to my work as I have learned how to ‘think outside the square’ and overcome challenges as I am legally blind. I have realised that my disability is a positive and it makes me who I am and gives me a unique perspective on challenges and how we can all take the opportunities provided to make the best of life.
What is your connection to the Brimbank area?
I have lived in the area for many years. I love the diversity of culture and environment. I am a member of the local council Disability Advocacy Committee and feel that Brimbank is an area of growth.
What do you love most about where you live?
The cultures, the cuisines and great transport infrastructure that assists with accessibility.
What, if anything, would you change about where you live?
More community connections.
Tell us something people would be surprised to know about you.
I love adventure and will get involved in anything that involves adrenaline and challenges my fear and takes me out of my comfort zones. I also enjoy reading audio books, chatting with friends and listening to a wide range of music.
How do you balance motherhood with your business aspirations?
Although my daughters are now young adults, motherhood never stops. I still constantly worry about their outcomes and wellbeing, the issues just change as they get older. There is plenty of time for rest, relaxation and spending time with loved ones, but being busy
and living life to the full keeps me happy. I balance it out so I never feel overwhelmed.
What aspects do you find challenging?
Networking, creating social media, travel and using technology are all things I have to think

Property news
Home values grow in June
There’s some good news and not so good news on the home front for homeowners.
Prices have risen in the month of June, but the pace that prices have risen has slowed. That’s according to the latest CoreLogic Home Value Index for June. Nationally home prices went up for a fourth month running, going up 1.1 per cent in June.
However that is slightly down from a 1.2 per cent rise in the median home price across the country for the previous month.
Of the capital cities, Sydney lead the way in price rises with homes rising 1.7 per cent for the month, bringing the median home price in that city at $1,073, 924.
Brisbane was the next in line for prices rising going up by 1.3 per cent and putting the median home priceacross both houses and units - sitting at $725,397.
Melbourne remains the second most expensive city in Australia with the median home price at $725,537 after the cost of a home rose by 0.7 per cent in the month of June.
CoreLogic’s research director, Tim Lawless, said that a lack of homes on the market was a key factor in the latest figures.
“Through June, the flow of new capital city listings was nearly -10 per cent below the previous five-year average and total inventory levels are more than a quarter below average,” Mr Lawless said. Although housing values continue to go up in June, the pace of growth across most capitals eased.
“A slowdown in the pace of capital gains could be a reflection of a change in
sentiment as interest rate expectations revise higher,” Mr Lawless said.
“Higher interest rates and lower sentiment will likely weigh on the number of active home buyers, helping to rebalance the disconnect between demand and supply.”
Meanwhile in regional Australia prices also continued to rise for the fourth month in a row, jumping by 0.5 per cent. The median house price in regional Australia now sits at $586,645.
But the amount of growth, as in the capital cities, was down.
Regional Victoria is the only rest of state market where quarterly housing value trends remain negative, down -0.4% in June to be -1.3 per cent lower over the quarter.

Trek drives into familiar territory
By Derek Ogden, Marque Motoring
‘‘Haven’t we met somewhere before?’ sprung to mind on my first encounter with the Subaru Crosstrek, for there is a lot in common here with the company’s XV sport utility vehicle.
In fact, says Subaru, the newly named compact is the latest iteration of the popular XV, including two petrol / electric hybrid models, aimed at anyone who wants a versatile, reliable, and stylish small SUV.
Priced from $34,990, the all-wheel drive Crosstrek comes in five variants - AWD 2.0L, AWD 2.0R, AWD 2.0S, AWD Hybrid L and AWD Hybrid S - offering those with an active lifestyle a versatile, reliable, and stylish small SUV.
However, there is a major point of difference between the Crosstrek and its antecedent. The Crosstrek has benefitted greatly from a visit to the doctor - a whole team of medics, in fact. Subaru collaborated with a medical school to study the structure of the human body and what causes driver discomfort, fatigueandlowerbackpainbehind the wheel.
Results found ride comfort is not solely affected by the vibration of the vehicle, but also by sounds and changes in visual information because of jerking and head swaying during driving.
Hence seats have been redesigned to reduce shaking of the head and roof damping has been improved to help reduce sound pressure fluctuations in the cabin.
Meanwhile, vehicle health is in the hands of Subaru’s standard five-year / unlimited kilometre warranty and 12 months complimentary Subaru Roadside Assistance.
The mid-range Crosstrek AWD 2.0R, selling for $38,490, plus on-road costs, was the test vehicle for a week and confidently took on widely varied road and weather conditions well during that time.
Styling
Once the domain of predominantly white or silver exteriors, or in this case ‘Subaru blue’, these days, subtle shades of colour are taking to streets around the world. Take for example the test Crosstrek with its Magnetite Grey Metallic paint job and dark machine finished 18-inch wheels. Who would have thought ‘dull’ could look so classy?
While the all-round appearance of the Crosstrek is generally a carry-over from the XV, the bonnet and radiator grille come in for a complete redesign, the latter maintaining the signature hexagonal shape, but in a larger more aggressively styled honeycomb.
Use of lightweight aluminium enables a newly designed bonnet to contribute to improved pedestrian protection with a softer headimpactzoneandasavingoftwokilograms in front fenders optimises weight distribution all round.
LED headlamps, plus cornering lights, improve visibility at night and add to power savings, while LED rear combination lamps feature a sharp 3-D C-shape. Rear-view mirrors are smaller, improving aerodynamics and presenting a less obstructive view.
Interior
The ‘doctors’ orders’ seats, clothed in premium material, provide exceptional comfort during longer drives (try 200-plus kilometres as we did), while leaving ample room for passengers to stretch out and relax.
Standard roof rails top off generous storage possibilities. However, a cramped cargo compartment weighs in at a stingy 291 litres with the rear seat backs up, and a maximum of 1278 litres with them folded. Under the floor sits a temporary spare wheel.
Infotainment
A fourth-generation infotainment system features, in the central dash, a large high-definition 11.6-inch portrait tablet-style touchscreenfocusingonentertainment, vehicle information and control switches within the centre display. Gone is the instrument strip
atop the dashboard, duplicating many of the functions displayed directly in front of the driver.
All Crosstreks feature full wireless Apple CarPlay and wired or wireless Android Auto connectivity, as well as AM, FM and Digital Radio, while WD 2.0L, 2.0R and Hybrid L come with a high-quality six-speaker system with 160 mm full range speakers in both the front and rear doors, as well as tweeters in the front instrument panel. Buyers can ‘turn up’ the sound with a premium harman / kardon systemonlyintheAWD2.0SandAWDHybrid S variants.
A 2.4-amp Type-A and one 3-amp Type-C USB port are located in front of the gearshift to power mobile devices. Two additional power supply USB ports are also provided for rear passengersatthebackendofthecentreconsole.
ForthefirsttimeinaSubaruvehicle, wireless charging of smartphones and other devices is on hand through a centre console tray.
Engines / transmissions
Thepetrol-onlyCrosstrekvariantsarepowered by an upgraded version of Subaru’s 2.0-litre directinjectionFB20four-cylinderhorizontally opposedengine, deliveringmaximumpowerof 115 kW at 6000 rpm and top torque of 196 Nm 4000 revs.
An upgraded continuously variable transmission with more than 80 per cent new components compared with the previous generation XV, results in improved drivability. Best fuel consumption on test was a whisker under 5 litres per 100 kilometres. A combined 7.2 litres per 100 kilometres is claimed by the maker.
Subaru Crosstrek AWD 2.0L $34,990
Subaru Crosstrek AWD 2.0R $38,490
Subaru Crosstrek AWD 2.0S $41.490
Subaru Crosstrek AWD Hybrid L $39,590
Subaru Crosstrek AWD Hybrid S $45,090
SPECIFICATIONS
Subaru Crosstrek 2.0R 4-cylinder petrol, CVT automatic, AWD SUV
Note: These prices do not include government or dealer delivery charges. Contact your local Subaru dealer for drive-away prices.
Safety
Crosstrek benefits from Subaru’s commitment to achieving no fatal road accidents in any of its vehicles by 2036 through the four pillars of primary, active, preventive and protective safety.
These already include advanced vehicle dynamics control with electronic stability control, anti-lock braking, electronic brake forcedistribution, brakeassist, tractioncontrol, active torque vectoring, a brake override and limited slip devices. Much more, no doubt, is on the way.
Driving
For some reason, the Boxer engine, on occasions, had some difficulty in settling when first accelerating, with a resulting surge in revs. A warmed-up motor showed no such stress.
At low-speed throttle openings, gear changeisinfinitelyvariableasinaconventional CVT, but at higher throttle openings it automatically adopts an eight-speed step control, creating a more conventional sound and feeling of acceleration, as well as holding engine speed higher for a sportier and more satisfying drive.

Sharks find mojo with big win over Craigieburn
Areturntoplayingwithabitmorefreedomhas paid off for Hillside in the Essendon District Football League division 1 competition.
After two straight losses, including one to top side West Coburg, the Sharks set a focus of getting back to what had worked earlier in the season.
Itpaidoff, withtheSharkscomingawaywith a big win against Craigieburn.
“We so badly needed it obviously after two losses in a row,” he said.
“You can get down at this time of year and it affects the confidence in the boys. We’ve been given some challenges in the last couple of months.
“The boys have been a little bit resistant and afraid of making a mistake. We gave them the freedom to play their natural game.
“We told them not to be afraid to make a mistake and don’t worry about kicking efficiently and the numbers.
“We wanted them to pull the trigger and it paid off.”
Denaro said it resulted in four good quarters
of good football and in turn they used the ball really well.
Bailey Ryan, who has been in and out of the side through Victorian Football League commitments, was the main recipient up forward, kicking seven goals.
Denaro said it was good to see Ryan starting to get some reward for effort.
“It’s a funny one with Baz,” he said. “It’s always good to have him back and he’s getting better week in, week out.
“He’s playing just as good as the start of the season, he’s just getting rewarded a bit more. It’s always nice to have a goal kicker like him in the side.”
The return of Ryan was a welcome one, with the Sharks other main goal kicker, Josh Covelli currently playing in the reserves.
Denaro said they were hoping to have last season’s division 1 leading goal kicker back in the side soon.
“Joshhashadanextendedruninthereserves,” he said. “He had surgery pre-Christmas and then one after Christmas.
“Hehadalimitedpre-seasonandithasreally affected him. He had a go, but he wasn’t right to go and we wanted him to get his body right.
“He has been playing centre half back and had a stint in the ruck and has had a licence to run and have some fun.
“He’s not ready to come back yet, but hopefully we will get him back in the next few weeks, but there’s no rush.”
The Sharks tests continue to come, with a match against Rupertsood on Saturday, after deadline.
Rupertswood entered the match a game ahead.
Denaro knows it will be a tough race for a finals spot.
“Every game critical and this week against Rupo is a huge game one. We’re taking it week by week and there has been lots of upsets this year.
“Hopefully a couple can go our way and we can pinch a couple.”
Angie Beard’s World Cup dream
By Tara Murray
There’s light at the end of the tunnel for Western United’s Angie Beard after two of the hardest months of her life mentally, with a FIFA Women’s World Cup appearance.
Having joined United part way through the A-League Women’s season, Beard had to watch her side from the side lines in their grand final defeat.
Beard said the whole United set up was extremely special and had been a big part of why she came home, signing with United until the end of next season.
“I loved playing professionally in Europe and it’s not the last time you’ll see me over there,” she said. “It’s been great to be closer to family, but it’s always hard leaving a club and connections you’ve made.
“Leading into the World Cup, Mark Torcaso and Amanda Stella (along with everyone at Western) gave me a lot of support in finding myformandplayingleftbackinanaggressive, attacking way.
“The club from top to bottom prioritised the women in a way I’m not sure I’d seen before”
The disappointment of missing the grand final was tough for Beard with a foot injury.
She said while Sydney FC was too strong in the grand final, there’s always a case of what might have been.
“It was hard to be on the side line with a couple of our girls, especially Chloe Logarzo and Jess McDonald,” she said.
“I’d like to think we would have made a difference if circumstances had been different. But that’s football.
“Injuries are an inevitability and with experience and support around you, you learn to take it in your stride and focus on recovery first and foremost, then focus on supporting the team in the ways that you can.
“The after effects of my foot injury and surgery and the timing of it all, I probably had two of the hardest months of my life mentally. With the big picture in mind, I’m lucky and grateful for the medical team at Western United for getting me back to full fitness before the World Cup. I won’t be wasting this opportunity.”
Having recovered from surgery with the help of the United medical team, Beard has been named in the Philippines team for the FIFA World Cup starting this week in Australia and New Zealand.
Beard, who had played three friendlies for the Matildas, will represent the Philippines for the first time at the World Cup.
She joins fellow Western United star Jaclyn Sawicki in the squad.
“It was a long process that started around
15 months ago, right after the Asian Cup,” she said. “[Alen Stajcic] Staj reached out to me and we had our first conversation about it, and at the time I didn’t even know that it was an option.
“I’ve worked with Staj before, him being head coach at the time when I received my first Matildas training camp call ups at 18 years old.
“I trust him, I respect him as a coach and the coaching staff as a whole here make me feel valued and respected as a player.
“I was still being called into Matildas camps against Spain, Sweden and for the Canada games, I had to sit with it and really decide what I wanted for my football and for my life before ultimately placing my allegiance with the Philippines.”
Beard said while she cherishes her time at the Matildas, the Philippines are just as much a part of her as Australia.
Her mum was born and raised in Cebu City with her family still living there.
She said she feels like she made the right decision to switch her allegiance to the Philippines.
“We didn’t have that much money growing up so the opportunities to travel and spend extended periods of time with my family in the Philippines were limited,” she said.
“My football career has taken me to a lot of places, Europe for a few years now, champions league, other national teams.
“It feels like I truly belong. The women in this squad are very talented and Staj is developing them to a place where their potential can really shine.
“Not only that, I feel like I’ve been a part of this team for a long time.
“I know that there have been whispers about my change for a little while now so the fans have just been waiting and waiting
for the official announcement and it’s been kind of like a “so when is this thing finally happening?!” situation.
Beard said this was the biggest stage for players in the sport and knows it’s something that might only come around once.
“It’s been intense,” she said.
“Personally, I believe I have developed myself into a player that should be playing international football.
“I’m at a point in my career where my experience and age is now pushing me more to step up on and off the field.
“The pressure can definitely be felt at times but nevertheless,
“I’malsoreallyenjoyingtheexperiencewith this team. I’ve been working a lifetime to get this opportunity and we’re all excited to show the world what the Philippines is all about.”
The Philippines first match is on July 21 against Switzerland.

Falcons cement another strong win
The City West Falcons threw the bibs around as they sealed another win in the Victorian Netball League championship division.
With top spot already secured, the Falcons ran their full squad as they looked at different combinations and trying to get everyone qualified for finals.
Despite all the changes, with 12 players taking to the court, the Falcons came away with a 70-58 win.
Falcons coach Marg Lind said the amount of changes made it a challenging match.
“We ran with a lot of rolling subs,” she said. “We were trying to qualify Soli [Ropati], Kim [Borger] and Molly [Kennedy].
“Itwasabitrevolving, butwegotthere. When you’re sitting 10 points clear on the ladder, you can have a look at every combination.”
Lind said they played well for three of the four quarters, but admits to pulling too many changes in the third quarter.
She said all the changes weren’t necessarily comfortable for the players, as they couldn’t get settled in one spot.
Every player spent time on the bench, which is unusual for that side, showing how much they rotated.
Jane Cook shot 34 goals for the Falcons, while Uneeq Palavi shot 22 goals.
Lind said it would have been hard for the umpires to decide the best on court with so many changes.
She said there weren’t really any standouts for them.
“Montana [Holmes] had a good game in patches,” she said. “Kim had one of her best games for us and combined well with Maggie [Lind] on the line.
“Maddie [Gray] and Jane [Cook] were solid. It was hard to settle. We had another look at the Sophie Hanrahan and Zoe Davies, goal defence-wing defence combination as well
“Soli played all three positions in the mid court and she’s getting into form.
The match was enough for Ropati to qualify for finals, with Borger, Kennedy and Olivia Cameron, who has been playing division 1, needing to play in the final round to hopefully qualify.
Lind said for a while they didn’t think their plan would come off. The Falcons have four players who will be away at the World Cup.
“It’samiracle,”shesaid.“Aroundthehalfway mark of the season I had a light bulb moment about Olivia.
“We already had Kim lined up, but Olivia could cover both grades. Hopefully it all pays off.”
The Falcons other two sides both had wins.
They all finish the regular season against the Casey Demons.

Balmoral has a big goal
By Tara Murray
Balmoral is focused on continuing what it has been doing, with a championship and promotion firmly on the cards in FV state league 5 west.
After 14 rounds, Balmoral sits atop the table with a perfect 14 from 14 record.
Club president Enver Malkic said they couldn’t have asked for much more this season.
“It’s going beyond our expectations,” he said. “We’ve played 14 games for 14 wins and conceded just six goals.
“Half of those goals came in a 15 minute period when our first goalkeeper went off injured.
“The goal for us is to get promoted and win the title.”
Balmoral has been in the mix the last couple of seasons, finishing third in 2022 and were sitting equal third on points in 2021 when the season was called off due to COVID-19.
In2019,theyfinishedinsecondspot,justone

Malkic said they wanted to take the side of the next level and beyond in the future.
“State league 5 isn’t easy,’ he said. “Teams that are involved have high quality players and we want to match and go above them.
“We were missing the x-factor last season, so we added a lot of quality players from higher divisions.
“Our goalkeeper is from state league 1 club Altona City, while we got two players from Kingston City. A lot have already signed for next season.
“We’re pleased to be where we are.”
As well as bringing in some high quality players, theclubisfocusedonbringingthrough players from their junior program.

Wins in those matches will take the side one step closer to the title. Malkic said it will be a challenge.
“We already have about three players left to go overseas on a holiday,” he said.
“We were aware of that at the start of the season. We have another three leave next week so we will be tested.”
Off field, Malkic said everything was going well with a change of committee bringing in some fresh ideas as they aim to strengthen not only the senior but the junior programs.
“Wehavealotofenergeticyoungpeoplewho have brought in,” he said. “Last season was the first we had a technical director and we’ve got more quality coaches for the juniors.
“Everyone is working together.”

Kangaroos upset Magpies to win four in a row
A strong run of four games for Sunshine has been capped off with an upset win against Parkside in the Western Region Football League division 2 on Saturday.
The Kangaroos found the right receipe to upset the Magpies, who suffered their first loss of the season. The win, the Kangaroos fourth in a row, shores up a top four spot, as the back end of the season hits.
Kangaroos coach Ben Chapman said after an up and down start, they had started to find their groove.
“We’ve played some pretty good footy,” he said. “We’re not worrying about the results and we’re on the right track. We’ve now beaten every team in the competition. When we play our best footy, it’s good enough to beat anyone, which is really pleasing.”
Chapman said they had spoken during the week about the challenge of facing the Magpies and the opportunity it presented the group.
He said knowing they were playing some
good football, it was a good opportunity to see where the side was sitting.
On Saturday, the Kangaroos controlled the game through the first half to open up a 42 point lead at half time. The Magpies showed some resistance in the second half, but the Kangaroos steadied to come away with a 16.8 (104)-11.10 (78) win. Chapman said the group played some really good football.
“We controlled the majority of the game andplayedthewaywewantedtoplay,”hesaid.
“We were able to dictate the game and we took the strengths away from them and opened it up a little bit.
“We kicked the first four goals of the game before they kicked two goals before quarter time. We kicked seven goals to two in the second quarter and gave our forwards some really good opportunities.”
Chapman said they were a bit off in the third quarter as the Magpies tried to make a comeback.
He said he was pleased with how the group held firm and responded, saying it was something that wouldn’t have occurred earlier in the season.
“It was a bit of reward for effort,” Chapman said.
Charly Williams kicked seven goals for the Kangaroos in a best on ground performance.
Chapman said the midfield group led by Hisham Kerbatieh, Mathew Medcraft and Jack Allan, and ruck Murray Boyd were really good in shutting the Magpies down.
He said the defensive group was also really strong.
Chapman said the message after the game was to make sure they don’t get ahead of themselves after that win.
“Weareontherighttrack,”hesaid.“Wehave to keep the consistency in our performance and be on the ball every week.”
Knights out of Dockerty Cup
The Melbourne Knights’ Dockerty Cup run is over.
Hoping to add to their 10 Dockerty Cup titles and win their first one since 2014, the Knights were in action in the semi-finals on Wednesday night, with a spot in the final on the line.
The Knights faced the Oakleigh Cannons at Knights Stadium in front of a big crowd.
The Cannons opened the scoring first through Daniel Clark in the 24th minute, before the Knights levelled the scores when Steve Whyte converted a free kick 10 minutes later.
That was the score at half time.
An early goal in the second half gave the Cannons the lead, with the Knights struggling to find a second goal to put the game back on even terms.
The Cannons scored the sealer through Alex Salmon in injury time to come away with a 3-1 win.
The Cannons, who lost the cup final last year, will face Heidelberg United in the Dockerty Cup final.
Calder through to final
By Tara Murray
Calder United’s dream of a sixth straight Nike F.C Cup title in a row are alive, with the side through to the grand final.
Having last lost in the knockout competition in2016,CalderhadtogetpastSouthMelbourne on Wednesday night in the semi finals.
It was a slow start for Calder, but as the game went on, Calder only got better. Two second half goals sent Calder into the decider with a 2-0 win.
Coach Nathan Maiorana said it was pretty exciting for the group.
“It’s really exciting for the club,” he said. “We did it with a lot of new players, a new team.
“It’s a different experience for the group and we’re happy they get to experience that, but we haven’t done anything yet.
“We still have to win it.
Maiorana said it took a while for them to get into the semi-final. He said nerves might have played a little part early.
“The first half we struggled a little bit,” he
said. “South Melbourne is a great team and has some great players.
“Wedohavesomeyoungplayersintheteam, to it could have been a bit of that [nerves]
“We didn’t execute the plan at all in any moment in the first half. We reiterated what we spoke about during the week at half time.
“The second half we executed it and that is how we won.”
He said they put the belief in the players at half time and they were able to respond.
Keiwa Hieda and Alexis Mitchell were the goal scorers for Calder, both with some individual moments of brilliance.
“Keiwa down the wing was really evasive the last part and was able to find the finish,” Maiorana said.
“Aleks has the tool box to do that and it’s always at her disposal.”
Just five players, who were part of the team from last season’s Nike F.C Cup championship, werepartofCalder’steamonWednesdaynight.
They were captain Ava Groba, Western United star Alana Cerne, Natasha Dakic,
Montanna Mathews and Raquel Deralas.
Maiorana said it was good for all the others to have the opportunity to play in a big game like this.
“It will help them going forward in their careers experiencing these big moments,” he said.
A win in the final would ensure Calder’s second trophy for the year having already won the Community Shield.
Calder didn’t celebrate making the final, as it was back in National Premier League Women’s action on Sunday, after deadline.
Calder faced Heidelberg United. Calder entered the round in sixth spot, only one point outside the top four.
Maiorana said they were keen to make the finals in that competition.
“We are a point behind Box Hill, but we have agameinhand,”hesaid.“We’refightingforthe top four.
“We’llcontinuetoplayourgameandexecute the plan we’ve been doing most of the year. We would like to be in the top four.”
Heidelberg easily accounted for the Goulburn Valley Suns on Tuesday night, winning 5-0.
The away team opened the scoring in the sixth minute and it would be the only goal for the first half.
Heidelberg’s experience shone through in the second half despite being a man since the 29th minute, scoring four more goals including three late to seal a spot in the final.
It’s one game further for Heidelberg this year after making the semi finals last year.
The Knights were quickly back in action on Sunday in the 22nd round of the National Premier League, facing Moreland City after deadline.
The Knights were in fourth heading into the round.
In other matches at the weekend, Green Gully was set to face Hume City on the road on Saturday night while the St Albans Saints were due to play the Altona Magic on Sunday.
