A new view of the world

Machine Imagining was the latest exhibition to be displayed at the Braybrook Community Hub.

Artist Kate Geck had the idea for the community engaged arts project because she was curious to explore databases that are used in machine learning.

“I thought it might be interesting to bring robot projects into the community by working with people in the area who might not have experience with machine learning and are probably curious about it,” said Kate, who over several months, worked with community members to produce a community database of observations of the local natural world.

“We worked together to make our own database of local endangered plants from the area. We did that by hand drawing and hand painting lots of specimens of vulnerable flora in our area. And then those were used to train some machine learning models to generate thousands of new images on the community database.”

Kate said these datasets were arranged through collage into large hanging textiles, and finally were finished with hand embroidery.

Plan for ‘final’ hotspot

The EPA has quashed speculation regarding a new hotspot at the Sunshine Landfill, confirming that there is just one remaining hotspot at the site.

Following the Sunshine Landfill community session with the EPA on September 21, news was circulating online that a second hotspot had been discovered near the first hotspot.

However the EPA has confirmed that there is only one ‘final’ hotspot remaining at the Sunshine Landfill site.

“EPA is awaiting an auditor-verified report on Barro Group’s landfill hotspot remediation

plan at the Sunshine Landfill at Kealba which would see the final remaining hotspot extinguished by depriving it of oxygen,” said EPA west metropolitan regional manager Steve Lansdell. “We will assess the report which we expect to receive shortly.”

Residents first made reports to the EPA regarding an unusual odour coming from the site in October 2019. Later that year, the Barro Group notified the EPA of four hotspots within the site.

The EPA said the hotspots were likely a result of “oxygen entering the landfill, and combusting with old, decomposed waste”.

In January this year, the EPA announced it

would be revoking the Barro Group’s licence for the Sunshine Landfill after multiple alleged breaches.

The decision meant Barro could no longer accept waste at the landfill.

The EPA said the decision to cancel the licence followed assessment of information Barro Group provided in response to a show cause notice issued by EPA on October 28, 2022.

As reported by Star Weekly, underground fires have been burning at the site for more than three years, with Barro missing several deadlines to put the fires out.

The Barro Group will now attempt to put out

the final hotspot with a new remediation plan that involves covering the hotspots in clay as a way to suffocate the fires and extinguish them through oxygen starvation.

The EPA said the court process continues and Barro Group’s next hearing is scheduled for April 15, 2024.

The EPA said it will continue to monitor air quality and odour from the site and provide information to the community. The EPA’s next community drop-in forum will be held from 5-7pm on Thursday, November 30, at the Kealba Hall located at 24 McShane Drive.

Watts Ward with Cr Justine Farrugia

There’s been lots happening in Watts Ward over the past few months, with many more exciting projects and works still to come.

A much welcomed park upgrade has been delivered at Banchory Green, along with improvement works to Splendour Circuit Reserve. Both projects were finished in August, with some additional furniture to be installed at Splendour Circuit in coming weeks. Council also installed a fitness station and fun goal at Parkwood Green Reserve in July.

Community consultation for Barwon Drive Reserve and Hillside Recreation Reserve Playspace were undertaken in July with preliminary design works having commenced.

There are also some great roads and infrastructure projects in the works, including stage 2 of the Hume Drive duplication which will start in late 2023, stage 3 of the Macpherson

Park Redevelopment project (rugby pavilion and pitch), a public convenience upgrade at the Toolern Vale Recreation Reserve, and the ongoing construction of the Diggers Rest Community Hub.

Other things to look forward to including construction of Plumpton Community Centre and Neighbourhood House, and of course, developing the master plan for the Plumpton Aquatic Centre.

Council has appointed the project manager and quality surveyor for the aquatic centre, with officers, together with the project manager, currently reviewing architect tenders. A report will be prepared for Council in an upcoming Council meeting, with masterplanning set to commence soon after.

Women go on walk for freedom

Hannah Hammoud

A mother of three from St Albans is leading a march of 22 refugee women from Iran and Sri Lanka who are walking to Canberra in a fight for security.

The refugee women from Iran and Sri Lanka are walking the 640 kilometres from Melbourne to Canberra calling for permanent protection visas for 10,000 refugees who have been living in limbo in Australia for 10 years.

In the first seven days of their walk, the women travelled through Beveridge, Kilmore, Seymour, Nagambie, Arcadia South and on to Shepparton. They set out from Melbourne at 10am on Friday, September 22, from the Immigration Minister Andrew Giles’ office.

The women are calling for permanent protection visas for the 10,000 ‘victims’ of the fast track assessment process.

These refugees and asylum seekers were left out of the February 2023 announcement from the federal government that allowed for 19,000 refugees who arrived over a similar period to apply for permanent residency.

At the time, Minister Giles said it made “no sense“ to keep people who were working and paying taxes in limbo.

Geetha Ramachandran from St Albans is one of the women leading the march, along with ten others from Brimbank.

“I am a mother of three young children, one of whom was born in Australia and knows no other home. Like tens of thousands of other women, I grew up surrounded by the violence of the civil war in Sri Lanka,” she said.

“My parents were refugees, I am a refugee,

my children are refugees. We transmit that violence and uncertainty from one generation to another. I am marching to bring this to an end – not just for me and my family, but for all people condemned to uncertainty.”

The women have garnered more than 3000 signatures through an online petition calling on support from Australians to press for protections for all refugees ‘left behind by the system’. Samira Turkian Zadeh, an asylum seeker from Iran, also leading the march said she sought refuge in Australia with her three

young kids, ‘yearning’ for the safety she never knew back home.

“We are women, resilient and determined, marching to Canberra to claim our right to permanent visas. We deserve to live like everyone else, focusing on rebuilding our lives and offering our children who were born here the opportunities other children have,” she said.

George is hoping to go the distance

On day six of his 726 kilometre journey from Adelaide to Melbourne to raise $50,000 for autism, George Chijarira will land himself in Caroline Springs.

The Melbourne Metro train driver is using his love of physical activity and the outdoors to embark on a sponsored 726 kilometre run, walk and cycle over seven days.

George is hoping to improve the lives of people with autism — including his friends and family - and will donate all the funds raised to AutismCRC, a charitable organisation he chose for its focus on autism research, support and advocacy.

George said Adelaide was chosen as the flag mark for the starting point of the journey in recognition of the appointment of Australia’s first and only state government minister for autism.

“We want to reach for a high fundraising goal, and spread the message of autism awareness across borders,” he said.

George is calling on locals to help the cause by participating, donating or sharing to spread the word.

“Aswecontinuetoraiseawareness, investin research, and fundraise for autism initiatives, we move closer to a world where individuals with autism can thrive, achieve their full potential, and be celebrated for the unique qualities they bring to our communities,” he said.

Less than a month out from the challenge, George described his first few months of preparation as ‘gruelling’, but said he is feeling focussed and prepared for his upcoming mission.

George will set off on his journey on November 5, before concluding in Melbourne on November 12 with the National Gallery of Victoria marked as the finishing line on day seven

Keilor kinder petition

Parents and families in Keilor are asking Brimbank council to maintain dedicated three-year-old and four-year-old programs for 2024 at the Keilor Park Kindergarten.

Council received a petition with 62 signatures at its meeting on September 19, calling for the programs to remain separate after it was announced that they would merge in 2024.

Councillor Virignia Tachos said finding a kindergarten place has become an ‘anxiety-causing issue’ for many local parents and families.

“Itisfantasticthatwedonowhavefree three-year-old kinder, it’s just facilitating it and having enough resources on the ground … the demand is so big out in our community,” she said.

Councillor Maria Kerr advocated for the issue, and said she had provided feedback to council for more transparency and consultation with families in the future when decisions affecting them are made.

“This is a great example of the community getting together to advocate for better outcomes,” she said.

Cr Tachos raised a notice of motion in July, citing community concerns regarding families being unable to find kindergarten places for their children that are close to their homes.

Thenoticeofmotionpromptedcouncil to announce it will undertake a review of its current kindergarten registration and enrolment policy and will consider including an additional criteria prior to the 2025 kindergarten allocation process which would require families to detail their proximity to their preferred kindergarten.

The petition has been referred to the Brimbank council chief executive Fiona Blair for consideration.

Funds needed for grassroots club

Brimbank council is urging the state government to fund upgrades for improved lighting at the Taylors Lakes Sporting Club.

At the council meeting on September 19, councillor Ranka Rasic said the current lighting does not meet the club’s needs. Cr Rasic said the club requires adequate lighting on both the tennis courts and football oval in order to meet the community needs for night training and competitions.

“I have visited the club a number of times and seen first hand the amazing work they

do for our community. The Taylors Lakes Sporting Club is the heart of community sport in Taylors Lakes. I urge the government to seriously consider [a] third investment as soon as possible,” she said.

Councillor Maria Kerr said the club provides ‘vital’ social and sporting networks for the local community.

“At a time that we need kids to be involved in sports, these clubs are struggling to make ends meet with inflation and increasing cost of living challenges. They just don’t have the resources to do this alone, they need this funding desperately,“ she said.

“I call on the state government to please consider the request for funding to assist these clubs. The lighting is a critical requirement for both clubs to continue to operate, to promote more competitions, members and survival in these tough economic times.

“... please consider this request on behalf of all residents of Taylors Lakes … these clubs are grassroots family clubs with the potential to cultivate future champions, promote wellbeing and enhance the community spirit in Taylors Lakes.”

Young dancers shine on AFL stage

Keen-eyed AFL grand final viewers in the west may have been surprised to see some of Ravenhall’s best young dancers performing alongside international rock band KISS during the mammoth pre-game entertainment. It was only a month out from the big game that Kstar Studios got the call offering for 50 of their students to take to the field of the MCG and join 450 other dancers performing the classic Rock and Roll All Nite - performing at one of the nation’s biggest sporting events alongside one of the world’s biggest bands. Seven-year-old Fraser Rise performer, Cuban, even got the opportunity to take centre stage, back to back with Tommy ‘The

Spaceman’ Thayer for his guitar solo.

Cuban said he loved every minute.

“My back-to-back with Spaceman was my dream come true,” he said.

Kstar Studios founder-director Karen Jehodo said she and her team were screaming andcryingwatchingtheshowcometofruition, with her students in the spotlight.

“They were so excited, this is the biggest thing… they were blown away to perform in a stadium with the world’s biggest rock band,” she said. “I always want to find ways for our childrentoshineonstageandthisisaonceina lifetime opportunity for them.”

Ms Jehodo said it was a whirlwind month for

investments in community sport help create a safe training space for more local young athletes to take part in the sport they love.

“We support communities across Victoria with high-quality, accessible community sport infrastructure,” the spokesperson said.

Council resolved to write to the Community Sport Minister Ros Spence and requested funding to be directly provided to the Taylors Lakes Sporting Club to enable the club to upgrade the sports lighting on the oval and tennis courts at Lionheart Reserve.

From trash to treasure

Communities in Melbourne’s north are set to benefit from forgetful travellers, with Melbourne Airport’s new Community Giving Fund subsidised by the sale of lost property.

Each year thousands of items are left in the airport terminals and those that remain unclaimed are auctioned off.

The funds will now be used to establish the Melbourne Airport Community Giving Fund, with an initial $50,000 to support local initiatives.

The program formally launched on Monday, October 2, and provides grants of up to $2000 to successful applicants to help fund expenses, associated with community projects, such as uniforms, transport, community kitchens and libraries.

Melbourne Airport chief of aviation Jim Parashos said the fund is designed to support the great work of smaller local organisations.

“Every year millions of passengers pass through Melbourne Airport, and some leave behind items, that despite best efforts, will never be reunited with their owner,” he said.

“We’re delighted to be able to give the proceeds we’ve raised from the sale of those items back to our local community.

“Whether it’s an art class needing supplies, a sports club updating uniforms or a gardening club looking for seedlings, these grants aim to ease the financial burden on smaller organisations.“

The fund is open to community groups in suburbs directly surrounding the airport, with applications open through the Melbourne Airport website.

Successful applicants will be contacted by Melbourne Airport once they have been assessed.

“ThisalsomeantabusyweekendforVictoria Police [who]… focused heavily on drink and drug drivers,” he said.

“While pleasingly the majority of those tested were doing the right thing, we still detected 343 drink and drug driving offences - this is unacceptable.

“It was a tragic period on the roads with four liveslostinseparatecollisions…[bringing]the number of lives lost now [to] a seven year high.

Kids pledging to ‘Break it Down’

Student leaders from Sunshine Heights Primary School are on a mission to raise awareness about stereotyping and bias.

The young leaders are creating a documentary to explore the negative impact of stereotyping and bias on the mental health of young communities.

Sunshine Heights Primary School wellbeing and inclusion leader Francine Sculli said the idea was first brainstormed with last year’s grade 6 cohort as part of Brimbank council’s Dynamic Young Citizens Program.

“Through the program, students learnt about how council works and how they can have a voice themselves in their community,” Ms Sculli said.

“The students identified that stereotyping and bias was a problem within their cohort and they wanted to address it within their community. They applied for a grant from council and came up with the idea to create a magazine and a documentary.”

Ms Sculli said the grant was successful and the idea was passed onto the next set of grade 6 students to bring the vision to life.

Recently the students spent the day at the Visy Cares Hub in Sunshine interviewing local community organisations and professionals for the ‘Break it Down’ documentary.

“Students asked questions about the impacts ofstereotypingandbiasonyoungpeople, asked people to share their own experiences and also sought advice on how young people can take a stand to break down stereotypes and bias,” Ms Sculli said.

“It has been a really powerful journey for our students. Some of them have a strong understanding and their own experiences of stereotyping and bias, and others are learning

about it for the first time.”

Ms Sculli said it was essential that the idea for the project came directly from students, andencouragedthemtorealisetheimportance of their voice.

“Itisequallyimportantforusasacommunity to give young people a platform for them to have their voices heard,” she said.

“They are natural-born leaders and they

hold so much knowledge. We need to continue to create opportunities for them to share their voice and take action. They are brilliant change-makers and the more opportunities we give them, the better.”

The school is leading the charge to change by starting an annual ’Break It Down’ day on October 13, where schools can pledge their commitment to promote true inclusion

and belonging.

Ms Sculli said she hopes the ‘Break it Down’ day gains momentum with more schools jumping on board to mark the day.

“We want that day to be a show of commitment that we are raising awareness and are committed to the work of actively breaking down stereotyping and bias, and working towards creating a better society,” she said.

Young Caleb’s story saves lives

Delivered prematurely through an emergency caesarean section, baby Caleb’s life was saved with the help of a point of care ultrasound (POCUS) machine.

Now, his story has allowed the Western Health Foundation to raise $154,000 to purchase a new POCUS machine that will help treat more babies in the future.

In July 2022, Caleb’s mum, Emily, visited the Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s at SunshineHospitalforher34-weekultrasound.

A Western Health doctor noticed that her baby had developed a condition called foetal hydrops, causing a severe fluid build-up in his lungs.

The next day, Emily was rushed in for an emergency caesarean section after Caleb’s heart rate dropped dangerously low. Caleb was born premature and extremely unwell. Due to the fluid build-up in his lungs, Caleb had stopped breathing and the Western Health team set up the POCUS machine in the operating theatre.

Using the POCUS machine, doctors could determine the depth of the fluid in his lungs as well as its precise location. This allowed the neonatologists to accurately insert drains into Caleb’s tiny lungs to remove the fluid.

In October 2022, after 100 days in hospital, Caleb was finally ready to go home with his parents.

Emilysaidsheandherfamilywere‘eternally thankful’ to the staff at the Joan Kirner Women’sandChildren’satSunshineHospital.

“Without them, and the incredible POCUS machine, our gorgeous Caleb would not be here with us today. [Bringing Caleb home] was such a joyful day, we were so thankful that Caleb was healthy and could finally come homeandbewithhisdaddyandme,”shesaid,

The ultrasound machine is set to be of enormous benefit as the Western Health

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) moves into caring for extremely preterm babies.

Western Health said the timing is critical, as almost 7,000 babies are delivered each year at the hospital, with the numbers expected to grow over the coming years.

Re-imagining Brimbank

A collaborative video installation is on display against the back wall of the Sunshine Library, encouraging passers-bys to re-imagine the concept of ‘public space’.

DamianLaingandSiLeonghavecombined their interests of urban planning, philosophy and design to create the ‘Affordances of Space’ installation.

The large-scale 60 second video installation invites viewers to contemplate and imagine new ways of inhabiting, using, and interacting with the built environment in Brimbank.

Damiensaidthecreationoftheinstallation was a two-stage process.

“I travelled around Brimbank collecting video footage of different spaces in long takes, Si then digitally animated this footage together on intersecting planes using 3D software to show how these spaces collide together into a rough whole,” he said.

Si said the installation is a ‘site-specific’

piece that uses footage of Sunshine and the local community, edited through 3D software, and mapped onto the Sunshine Library for looped projection

“I hope the work inspires people from all walks of life to come together in reimagining potential uses of shared spaces,” Si said.

“... I hope the work brings people together - at a literal and figurative intersection, to contemplate the vast and diverse networks of people, animals, machinery, and infrastructure that comprise a community.

“Everyone has their own way of defining what it means to ‘be in a community’ and I hope the work shows how important it is to acknowledge the power, privilege, and responsibility that comes with shaping and coding land, waterways, and sky for specific ways of living.”

Shutting the door on gambling

Gaming machine areas in all Brimbank venues will soon be subject to mandatory closure periods following the state government’s first step to enforcing its landmark gambling reforms.

On October 3, Casino, Gaming and Liquor RegulationMinisterMelissaHorneannounced a bill to enforce mandatory closure periods for all gaming machine areas in venues, except Crown Casino, between 4am and 10am. In August alone, more than $15 million was lost

to Electronic Gaming Machines in Brimbank.

Brimbank mayor Bruce Lancashire said reducing gambling harm was a priority for council. “Brimbank has the highest losses to electronic gaming machines of any Victorian local government area, totalling $172.8 million in 2022-23,” he said.

“Council has been advocating for gambling reform over a period of years. Advocacy on the issue has been led by mayors and councillors, who have met regularly with local MPs and ministers for gambling.“

Albanvale’s own Wing Chun Kung Fu Master Maurice Novoa set off to Indonesia on a philanthropic journey through the power of martial arts.

Novoa conducted a martial arts workshop at the Kali Majapahit martial arts club, owned by Head Instructor Wulung Damardoto, where participants learned defensive footwork techniques against knife attacks, incorporating elements from basketball movements to make self-defence techniques practical and accessible.

Earlier in the year, Novoa was inducted into American Martial Arts Alliance Foundation Legends Hall of Honors in recognition of his dedication to the world of martial arts

Novoa described the workshops as a ‘huge success’, and has said he hopes to make the classes a regular event.

“I’ve been travelling to Indonesia for years ever since I was 21. Martial arts is my passion and this is the first workshop I’ve done over there. I hope to run a bigger workshop again next year and hopefully create a snowball effect.” he said.

Nine students attended the workshop with Novoa donating the cost of the class fee to a local orphanage in Jakarta.

“If it means everytime I go over there I can raise money for this orphanage by just giving a two hour workshop then that is fantastic,” Novoa said.

The workshop’s success was unprecedented, with Damardoto describing it as the most successful fundraising event in the club’s history.

“You taught us not only the value of martial arts but also the value of sharing and making an impact on the community,” he said in a letter thanking Novoa for his visit to the local club.

Brimbank council said it will continue to advocate to the state government for further

measures to help minimise gambling harm across the municipality, including bringing forward the closing time to midnight, lowering the daily EFTPOS withdrawal limit to $200, decreasingthemaximumbetto$1perspin,and introducing a ‘sinking cap’ whereby gaming machines are not replaced once entitlements have been forfeited.

Speaking about the bill Minister Horne said the mandatory closure period is important to prevent and reduce gambling-related harm. The mandatory closures are set to come into effect by mid-2024.

Mum’s mission in honour of son

The Rehmat Sandhu Foundation is a Melton-based charity that supports people across the west who are living with disability, struggling financially, experiencing domestic violence and much more. The founder, Ravinder Kaur, is driven by her strong will to rise above her grief and make a difference to the lives of people in need. She spoke to Liam McNally about the foundation’s journey.

Shortly after Ravinder Kaur’s son passed away in 2014, she received a call from a young girl who had met her son at a low point in her life.

The girl said she was sitting in a park alone in the city when a 21-year-old Rehmat Sandhu approached her.

“He said hello to me, and then he asked, are you okay? Are you crying?” she told Ms Kaur.

Thegirlsaidshewasinitiallyconfusedbythe stranger, but she explained to him that she was alone on her birthday and feeling sad.

“Straight away he called all his friends and they organised a birthday for her, a party and a cake and everything and celebrated her birthday,” Ms Kaur said.

“That was Rehmat, and he would do that for anyone.”

Ms Kaur said that it was to honour her son’s caring spirit that inspired her to launch her charity organisation, and name it the Rehmat Sandhu Foundation.

“The very word, Rehmat, means blessing,” she said.

“He was very compassionate, very kind and he always desired to make a positive impact on people, on the lives of others. So I’m just trying to do that.”

Since 2015 Ms Kaur’s tribute to her son’s legacy has been successful in uplifting the community in Melton and across the west.

Ms Kaur has a long history in the healthcare field, and The Rehmat Sandhu foundation began with blood drives and organ donation programs.

It quickly expanded into a leading charity organisation in the disability support field, as well as assisting people who are struggling in any way it can.

“Our aim is to enhance the lives of people

with disabilities by offering essential support services and promoting inclusivity within our community,” she said.

“We aim to reach out across all cultures and abilities, rendering assistance to anyone in need across Melton and the western suburbs.

“We meet the needs of homeless people, disadvantaged youth, seniors, those affected by domestic violence and vulnerable and financially struggling families.

“We also provide support and counselling services to new migrants and victims of domestic violence.”

Thefoundation’ssuccesshasbeenrecognised through record-breaking blood donations, a Victorian Premier’s Volunteer Champions award, and celebrated community events, but

for Ms Kaur it’s one-on-one assistance that brings the most satisfaction.

“We are particularly proud of our work in providing vital assistance to individuals with disabilities, helping them lead more fulfilling lives,” she said.

“Additionally, our foundation has made significant strides in promoting community awareness. Any positive change we bring to someone’s life is a source of pride for us.”

The current economic climate has seen demand for the foundation’s services increase, with Ms Kaur noting an increase in vulnerable families in need of food assistance, with fuel and day to day supplies.

The organisation responds to rising demand by making an effort to be available when many

organisations aren’t - including on weekends and holidays - and by doing little things that help struggling people regain their confidence, such as providing personalised birthdays for kids.

Ms Kaur said the organisation is soon set to expand following the purchase of a house in Melton West that is almost finished being renovated.

“We can accommodate more people with disabilities, or who are homeless, or domestic violence affected families,” she said.

“We’re going to have a community garden so that we can have a veggie patch and people can come and have coffee, socialise.

“Im very, very, excited about this one.”

Looking further ahead, Ms Kaur said her vision is for the foundation to continue to expand its reach and impact.

“We aim to continue providing comprehensive support to individuals with disabilities, fostering a more inclusive community. Additionally we aspire to create partnership and collaborations that enable us to make an even greater difference in the lives of those we serve,” she said.

Ms Kaur said it’s the community that keeps her going.

“I’m just trying to make a positive impact,” she said. “The love and support I get from everyone, it makes me keep going.

“Rehmat Sandhu foundation is we, not I, it’s all of us.”

Ms Kaur said anyone in the community who isstrugglingshouldreachouttothefoundation to see how they can help.

“Anyone who is in need, we dont judge, we don’t ask questions,” she said.

Walk for awareness

This Friday, Arcare’s Sydenham and Hillside will join forces in a walk for breast cancer to mark Pink Ribbon Day.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month takes place every October. The National Breast Cancer Foundation reports that over 20,000 Australians will be diagnosed with the disease this year alone, equating to 57 Australians every day.

The older women get, the higher their risk of developing breast cancer, with about three out offourbreastcancercasesoccurringinwomen aged 50 years and older.

The foundation projects that more than 3200 Australians will lose their lives to breast cancer this year.

Residents, family members and team

members from Arcare Sydenham will walk the 1.5 kilometres to Arcare Hillside to join fellow residents for a Pink Ribbon Day morning tea. Arcare Sydenham lifestyle coordinator, Victoria Large said this walk is to raise awareness, and honour those close who have bravely battled breast cancer..

“Breast cancer is something we have all been touchedbyinsomeformoranother–weknow someone who has had it, or we ourselves have beat it,” she said.

“Community involvement for our residents is vital to support their emotional and physical wellbeing, while the close proximity of Arcare Sydenham and Arcare Hillside makes it possible for our residents to meet and mingle.”

Throughout history, women have faced and overcome unique challenges because of our sex. As adult human females, women have shown time and again that we are a force to be reckoned with-economically, socially, culturally, and politically. I congratulate all the ‘Women in Business’ for their achievements, because as all Liberal’s know, it is private businesses that grow a nation’s wealth and provide employment and training opportunities to the next generation. I also congratulate all the ‘Women in Business’ because as all of us know - there is nothing in this world that can compare to a real woman!

In Victoria, close to 40% of small business owners are women and one third of small businesses are run by migrants. We know that migrant women can face challenges when starting or running a small business.

That’s why the Allan Labor Government is proud to support women to achieve their full potential, delivering record support to small businesses.

Important funding supports groups like Migrant Women in Business, who plant the seed for countless businesses owned and run by migrant women.

When given the opportunity to learn and grow, they generate so much social, cultural and economic value for our local communities.

Women in St Albans and Kororoit are talented and resilient, and when women come together, incredible things happen.

MY PLACE

Andrew Marshall is a Caroline Springs resident and the senior vice president of his local RSL. He spoke to Star Weekly about his connection to the local area.

What’s your connection to Caroline Springs?

I am a resident within the Melton Council area of 18 years, albeit on the border, prior to this I was a resident in Brimbank for 36 years.

What do you like about where you live?

The area where I am residing is a reasonably low-traffic area with good neighbours and with the local councillors being readily available and willing to listen and act when the need arises.

What, if anything, would you change about where you live?

The only thing I would change is the roads and footpaths. They are managed by another council and although they’re prompt to respond to complaint, they are very slow to act.

Where is your favourite local place to spend time?

Being retired I find it enjoyable to meet and spend time with other RSL members at our monthly morning teas at our Taylors Hill officeandourFridaynightraffleatWestwaters Hotel in Caroline Springs.

Tell us about your time/work with the Caroline Springs RSL?

As a past president of the Caroline Springs RSL Sub-branch and its current senior vice president I am kept fairly busy with upcoming 10th anniversary celebrations - with a Dinner

Dance to be held at Westwaters on October 14, as well as coordinating our Remembrance Day commemorations at Caroline Springs on the November 11 and Aintree on the November 5. The Sub-branch is also in the process of filming a documentary regarding the formation and the growth of the RSL in Caroline Springs.

Do you mind telling us a little bit about your military history?

At the age of 18 I enlisted in the Citizens Military Forces as a Musician for a period of three years then enlisted in the regular Army for a six year period as a Medical Assistant serving overseas in Malaya, Thailand and Vietnam, after that I transferred to the Army Reserve for another eleven years.

Tell us something people would be surprised to know about you.

During my reserve service I also spent a number of years with St. John Ambulance at Deer Park, Melton and Laverton, providing first aid coverage at local and country events including the Ash Wednesday Bushfires.

Brimbank local Neil Sgroi gathers a group of volunteers once a month to keep the streets of Maribyrnong clean.

Founder of the Maribyrnong River Rubbish Club,Neilsaidhecameupwiththeideaforthe project after attending the South Melbourne beach patrol five and a half years ago.

“I thought it was a great idea, and I thought it was something that was really needed in the Maribyrnong area,” he said.

Neilsaideacheventattractsbetween30to40 volunteersfromarangeofdifferentagegroups.

“We are very happy with that number. It would be difficult to manage if we had too many more people turning up.

“We have everyone from families with small children coming, through to retirees and everything in between.”

The event is co-run with organiser Sanda, every month throughout the year, advertised through meetup and Facebook.

“We generally run on the second Saturday of each month and we normally start from the Footscray wharf area.

“We get together as a big group and have a chat about our aims for the day as we usually end up with half regulars, half new people.

“It is really about getting together and meetinglikemindedpeopleinthecommunity.”

Following the debrief, Neil said the group goes about collecting as much rubbish as they can along the riverbank area.

Neil said they average collecting 70 to 80 kilos of rubbish, althoughin March they hit their record of 201 kilos.

“It was horrifying because that was done in a 90 minute cleanup period.

“I encourage people to take responsibility of their own local area, even if they’re not the cause of the litter.”

Seniors unite for football game

The Victorian Seniors Festival has returned for its 41st year, in a month-long celebration filled with events and activities for seniors.

Brimbank council has joined in the celebrations for the month of October, with a range of events to promote health and wellness, and bring together older community members for fun and friendship.

Star Weekly photographer Damjan Janevski paid a visit to the Keilor Basketball and Netball Stadium to capture all the action at the ‘Walking Football’ event.

The weekly walking football program will be running every Wednesday for the month of October.

Spring has sprung

Melbourne’s outer north-west has been awash with a sea of yellow canola fields to welcome the change in season.

Brimbank residents can witness the flowering fields, which are normally at their best from the middle of September through to the middle of October.

The crop is grown across the state- with

the main production in the south west- for its seeds, which are crushed to use in margarine and cooking oil.

According to Agriculture Victoria, Australia produces 1.9 to 2.7 million tonnes of the grain every year, and Victoria was the second-highest canola producing state between 2017-18 and 2019-20.

As a country, Australia is widely known for its high quality exports, and canola is no exception, with some significant international markets for its canola.

Most of Australia’s canola in 2019-20 was exported to the European Union for biodiesel, and in 2020 the five year average price was approximately $560 per tonne, Agriculture

Victoria said.

People wishing to see the vibrant fields can try the road to Sunbury Road past the airport or the Princes Freeway towards Little River.

‘Canola tourists’ are encouraged to enjoy from a distance, as most flowers are grown on private farms and used for agriculture.

You’ve probably heard about Australian government changes to medicine prescribing rules, and how it’s now possible to get your regular pills for two months at a time instead of one.

If,likemanyofus, youusuallypopintoyour local pharmacy 12 times a year for medicinesand maybe double that if you also collect stuff for a family member – then this is good news.

However, it’s important to remember that this change doesn’t happen automatically, and you can’t just ask for twice the amount from the nice people behind the counter at your pharmacy – even if you’ve been going there for years and they know you well!

The main thing you need to know is that the repeats on your current prescription will still be valid only for a month at a time, and, no, you can’t use two of them at once.

Strictly speaking, the new scheme covers 60-dayprescriptions-whichisasnearenough to two months to make no difference. The plan is that for certain long-term medications - those for cholesterol or diabetes or endometriosis, as examples – 60-day supplies will be available, but only as long as your doctor thinks it’s a good idea.

On September 1 this year, almost 100 common medicines listed on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme became eligible for 60-day prescriptions. By this time next year the list is expected to have grown to over 300.

To take advantage of this you need to talk with your GP, who has to make some important decisions with you. They have to be confident your condition, whatever it is, is well managed by the medications and that

you won’t need a change of dosage for the next couple of months.

If they consider that you are doing well on the meds, then they may issue 60-day scripts, with repeats.

The 60-day prescriptions look different to the normal monthly ones, so your pharmacist can identify it at a glance. And, of course, your pharmacist might ask you a couple of gentle

questions, to make sure you’re comfortable with the new arrangement.

These new rules, the government says, will save many Medicare card holders up to $180 a year, and concession card holders up to $43.80 a year. They don’t affect the PBS Safety Net in any way.

So, patience is probably the key here. Remember that your current repeat scripts –

even if the medication is on the list - are still monthly, andthereisnothingyourpharmacist can do to change that.

Once the time comes to see your doctor for some more, however, ask them if you can have the two-month versions. And remember, even with them, i you can still pop into your local pharmacist as often as you like for great advice!

Watch out for our slithery locals

The warmer sssspring weather has woken up the most slithery residents of Brimbank, Melton and Wyndham, and residents have taken to Facebook to share numerous snake sightings.

Star Weekly spoke with local wildlife controller Jarrod Bingham about what residents can expect from a particularly hot spring-summer season, and what to do if snakes get a little too neighbourly.

MrBinghamsaidthatwhilethewarmspring may bring the snakes out earlier, that doesn’t necessarily mean the entire season will be

particularly busy in his line of work.

“It’sacommonquestionforallsnakecatchers that we get, is this year busier than usual?” he said.

“Yes they may come out earlier in different years due to the weather, but in terms of numbers our call outs do even out to roughly [1,500] every year.”

MrBinghamsaidthatoncetheweatherheats up to be consistently higher than 30 degrees, snakesaren’tactuallyoutforthatlongatatime.

“Put it this way - a reptile is basically a living solar panel, they can’t switch this thing off… On a 30-plus day if a snake is in the sun for longer than 20 to 30 mins it will die due to the

heat,” he said. “So in these warmer days you’ll find snakes hanging around the pool, under bushes, attempting to get inside, anyway to escape that harsh sun.

“So keeping that in mind, keep doors closed and be vigilant when walking out under your patio that there may be a possibility that you have a friend under there trying to escape that heat.”

Mr Bingham said general advice for keeping snakesawayfromyouryardincludeskeepingit generally clean with a mown lawn, trimming bushes around the base, not leaving piles of rubbish, rocks or wood laying around, closing up holes, and keeping pet water bowls away

Keep garden clear to prevent snakes

Vets at Greencross Vet Hospital in Werribee are urging local pet owners to stay vigilant and to keep their gardens free from overgrowth as it treats three to five dogs or cats daily for snake bites.

The change of season and warmer weather brings the snakes out from hiding as they love to sunbake but not get too hot.

Clinical director at Greencross Vet Hospital Dr Liam Donaldson says owners domestic pets need to be extra cautious during spring.

“Primarily it’s dogs who are presenting with snake envenomation, but it’s also not uncommon to also see cats. We have even had a rabbit who suffered tiger snake envenomation – luckily the owners were aware and brought the little one in quickly for treatment,” he said.

His team at Greencross Vet Hospital are

seeing several tiger and brown snake bite cases in and around the western Melbourne area.

Bites from either snake type can result in respiratory paralysis and a coagulopathy; an inability to clot blood that can be rapidly fatal if not immediately treated.

Dr Donaldson is warning owners to look out for signs of envenomation as early as possible, and to always bring them in for professional assessment.

“In dogs we commonly see vomiting and collapse before a very quick recovery. This recovery is only short lived, before the toxin has its most fatal effect of causing breathing paralysis,” he said.

“Sometimes pet owners feel that their pet has recovered following the initial period of collapse, only to find an hour or two later that their pet is struggling to breathe. Dogs

also often present with dilated pupils and a wobbly gait or an inability to walk.”

He urged pet owners to keep their gardens clean and free from overgrowth as snakes like to hide in cool places and an overgrown garden creates the perfect hiding spot.

“Pet owners should not under any circumstances handle a snake if their pet has been bitten, leave it be and immediately take your pet to your closest animal hospital,” says Dr Donaldson.

from doors so animals seeking water aren’t coming to walkways.

“If you see a snake remain calm and don’t panic… that snake is more scared of you, trust me, so just stop what you are doing and let that snake slither away from you,” he said.

“If it can’t get out of the property on its own accord or if you are in a built up area where it would be safer removing it then as soon as the snake is some distance away to safely move back then by all means keep an eye on it or call a snake catcher.

The ultimate 4x4 dual cab ute

Well, hello. We’d almost forgotten about the other Korean – you know, SsangYong.

After some financial woes, restructure and change of ownership, SsangYong is back in business selling cars, with two SUVs and a 4x4 dual cab ute to offer.

Originally launched here in 2004, Musso was available as both a ute and SUV, the former calledtheMussoSports, whichattractedbuyers with a bargain price and Mercedes-sourced turbo-diesel.

These days ute and SUV have parted company, but it’s the Musso 4x4 dual cab ute that we are checking out here and its bid to grab a slice of the lucrative sports utility market.

Launched in 2018, Musso is offered in two lengths with different-sized tubs, but is not available in cab-chassis form with a metal tray replacement.

Styling Musso comes in a choice of short or long wheelbase, both with the same 2.2-litre turbo-diesel.

The short wheelbase version is 5095mm long, with a 3100mm wheelbase and 1300mm long tub – and can carry a 790kg payload.

At 5409mm, the XLV is 314mm longer, with a stretched 3210mm wheelbase and extended 1600mm tub that is able to accommodate a full tonne (1020kg). The shorter version is fitted with benign five-link coil suspension and is more of a sports focused model.

Tick the box for the long wheelbase option and it also comes with supportive leaf springs at the rear and is targeted at the working end of the market.

Both versions have independent, double-wishbone front suspension.

There are two grades from which to choose, ELX and Ultimate, with a couple of add-on packs from which to pick.

Prices start from $36,790 driveaway for the short wheelbase ELX with a six-speed manual.

ThelongwheelbaseELXis$38,290driveaway, also with a manual. An auto adds $2000.

Ultimate is priced from $43,090 driveaway, with an auto and metallic paint thrown in. Addingthelongertubtakesthepriceto$44,590 and topping it off with the Luxury Pack takes the total driveaway price to $47,590.

Metallic paint is $495, the XLV Pack $1500 and Ultimate Pack $3000.

Even at these prices it leaves plenty of overhead for further optioning the vehicleand there’s plenty of them.

Sports bars, fender flares, side steps, tub liner, roller tonneau, under-body protection and sports suspension kits are available.

There’s a choice of six colours. Atlantic Blue is standard; Grand White, Silky White Pearl, Marble Grey, Space Black or Indian Red cost extra.

Standard kit includes cloth seats and manual air, 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, 18-inch alloys, cruise control, LED daytime running lights, front fog lights, projector headlights with integrated LED turn signals, front and rear parking sensors, auto high beam, auto lights and wipers and an auto dimming mirror.

Ultimate adds black 18-inch alloys, artificial leather, heated and cooled front seats, heated steering wheel, 360-degree camera and walk-away locking.

Our test vehicle was the short wheelbase

Ultimate with $205 Luxury Pack fitted at $46,685 driveaway.

It adds Nappa leather, dual zone climate air, HID headlights, power-adjust front seats, powered driver lumbar support, heated rear seats and a power operated sunroof.

Musso is covered by a seven-year unlimited kilometre warranty, with seven-year roadside assistance and seven-year capped price servicing.

The warranty extends to commercial use.

Infotainment

Infotainment consists of an 8.0-inch touchscreen, six-speaker audio, Bluetooth,

AM/FM radio and wired Apple Carplay and Android Auto.

It’s not the fastest, or most intuitive system that we have used – but it’s not the worst either.

At times it can be difficult to see, particularly in strong sunlight.

The front console offers two USB-A ports, a 12V/120W power outlet and a cigarette lighter.

Engines / transmissions

A 2.2-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel produces 133kW of power at 4000 rpm and 400Nm of torque from 1400-2800 rpm.

The latter figure rises to 420Nm in the longer XLV but is available over a narrower band from 1600 to 2600 rpm, presumably because it is expected to carry heavier loads.

Transmission is six-speed manual or six-speed auto, with drive to the rear wheels and selectable four-wheel drive, with 2Hi, 4Hi and 4Lo ranges. It also has an auto-locking rear diff.

Safety

As yet Musso has not been rated by ANCAP for safety and we cannot justifiably award more than five points for this feature on this basis.

But the safety story is a strong one with six airbags, a rear-view camera and Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) with Forward Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning, Front Vehicle Start Warning, Active Rollover Protection and Driver Attention Warning.

Ultimate adds Blind Spot Detection (BSD), Rear Cross Traffic Warning (RCTW) Lane Change Collision Warning (LCW) and Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS).

Two ISOFIX and three top tether child seat anchors are provided.

The entry level model lacks reach adjustment for the steering wheel, but in a real faux-pas the rear-centre seating position is equipped only with a lap seat belt.

It’s been a long time since we’ve seen one of these in a modern vehicle.

Driving Musso’s new body-on-frame platform is shared with the SsangYong Rexton.

The rigid body-on-frame design features high strength steel with eight large mounting points that contribute to lower levels of road

noise and a more refined ride.

Weighing up to 2090kg, it can tow a 3500kg braked load and is equipped with trailer sway control as standard.

Steering is hydraulic in ELX but Ultimate scores speed sensitive power steering, with an 11.8-metre or 12.2-metre turning circle depending on wheelbase.

And,insomethingofararityforthesegment, it comes with four-wheel disc brakes, ventilated at the front -- most of the more fancied utes still come with rear drums.

With a 75-litre tank, fuel consumption ranges from 7.9 to 9.0L/100km, depending on grade and wheelbase.

Nexen N Priz RH7 road tyres are fitted, with 255/60 18s for Musso and 235/70 17s for XLVsilver for ELX and black for Ultimate.

A full-size spare is provided.

We’ve always felt the tub in the Musso was too short, a bit stubby even compared to other utes. The latest model addresses this issue, at least with the long wheelbase XLV which boasts one of the longest tubs in its class.

Having said that, we were still able to transport a heavy, power adjustable hospital-style bed in the short wheelbase, even though the end jutted over the tailgate.

Fortunately, it was only for a short distance.

Although our test vehicle was not fitted with side steps, grab handles at each of the four doors makes entry easier.

Rear legroom is limited, particularly for knees which press the back of the front seat.

Musso is push-button start and performance is surprisingly strong, both off the mark and in roll-on acceleration.

You can change gears manually with a thumb-operated switch on the side of the transmission lever.

The feel is solid but nothing fancy, with stiff suspension that generates plenty of old school shake and shudder. Large bumps are likely to produce some steering wheel backlash.

The digital instrument cluster looks a bit underdone and while you can choose from three different skins, it needs to be more configurable.

In terms of dimensions, the standard tub is 1300mm x 1570mm x 570mm, with a width of 1100mm between wheel arches. The longer tub is 1600mm, with other dimensions the same.

SPECIFICATIONS

SsangYong Musso Ultimate 4x4 dual cab utility, 2.2-litre turbo-diesel, 6spd automatic, part-time 4WD

Note: These prices are driveaway and include government or dealer delivery charges.

The first holds 1011 litres while the longer tub has a 1262-litre capacity - an increase of almost 25 per cent.

As for off-road capability, Musso presents mainly as a farm or worksite candidate. Weekend warriors will need to invest in a lift kit and some chunkier all-terrain rubber to tackle anything tougher.

Low range gearing and a locking rear diff deliver plenty of traction, with hill descent control as well as hill start assist to help.

But a silly 23-degree approach angle, modest 215mm ground clearance and equally shy 350mm wading depth are limiting factors, the former when it comes to negotiating tricky fire trails with some rock hopping involved.

But the foundations are good and Musso certainly has potential.

We were getting an impressive 7.1L/100km after more than 500km.

Summing up

Musso is the proverbial value for money.

The styling is generic but the basics are there, it just needs fine tuning to meet market expectations.

To wit we live in a digital world and that means digital radio and a wireless charge pad need to be added.

It’s got the desired black wheels but a sports bar and soft tonneau (at minimum) are needed to complete the look that 4x4 dual cab buyer’s desire.

CarPlay and Android Auto are okay when they work, but when you’re out in the sticks and run out of reception, built-in navigation is your friend.

These electronic aids are all available in other markets, but have obviously been removed to keep down the price.

While resale could be an issue, Musso presents as a quality product with more than enough off-road capability for most, at a price that is frankly difficult to ignore.

Don’t forget the Nappa leather and vented front seats.

United season around the corner

Daniel Penha was the happiest man on earth when he scored his first goal in a Western United jersey last week.

The Brazilian star has arrived at Western United and settled immediately into the side, making his competitive debut against Sydney FC in the Australia Cup and catching the eye in his brief cameo.

But Penha went one better in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Western Sydney Wanderers, scoring early in the second half as United won the clash 2-1.

After being played clean through by Noah Botic, Penha had much of the attacking half to run into and following a lovely dummy shot, the Brazilian blasted a brilliant finish into the back of the net.

Leaping into the air and releasing a wave of emotion, Penha celebrated in style and said after the game that it was a special feeling after the adversity of injury over the last 12 months.

“I can’t tell you. I am so, so, so happy,” he said.

“After I scored, I cried a little bit because the mind can remember the hard times in the last year. I am so happy, I’m looking forward to this season.

“After one year, I’ve come back again and I can play again in the first 11. I’m so happy to score, to help the team. I think this is a good game for the start of the season. I’m so happy to be back again.”

After the club reached the quarter-finals in the Australia Cup for the first time, United is continuing to get up to speed ahead of the A-League Men opener in just over two weeks.

Penha is buoyant about how the side is shaping up, with United aiming to return to the finals after missing out last season.

“Our team is so good, we have good staff,

Another award for Muus

Wyndhamvale’s Chloe Muus has taken out the women’s Western Region Football League division 2 best and fairest award.

Muus won with 22 votes, only one above West Footscray’s Roxana Sefton who came second. Spotswood’s Isabel Choate came third polling 16 votes.

This is Muus second league best and fairest after winning the award in 2021, in her first season on football at the Rovers. Muus had previously played football while completing Year 11 and 12 in Mildura.

LastseasonwhilelivinginWesternAustralia she continued playing the game she loves for Baldivis in the Perth Football League.

“I didn’t really think I was a sniff this year,” she said.

“Didn’tthinkIwasgoingtowinanything,so it was a good surprise.”

When Muus first won the award in 2021, the Rovers finished on the bottom of the ladder without winning a game. This season, they were runners up in division 2, coming just two points away from premiership glory.

“Obviously, everyone prefers a team win but sometimes individual awards are nice,” she said.

“Itwasnicethisyeartowinitandforustobe successful, just not completely successful.

“[The improvement in the team has] been massive, when I came back this year and saw the development.

“There were a fair few new girls who have fit right in, but the growth of the girls who have been there since the start [has been massive].

“Some of those girls had never played before that first season [in 2021] and to see how far they’ve come now is awesome.

“Every year we’re getting more new girls coming down, some that have played before and some haven’t.

“So it’s good to see the talent growing so much.”

With another year under the teams’ belt, the next step is obvious for the Rovers, to win the premiership.

“That’s the goal next year,” Muus said.

Cahn departs Knights

Melbourne Knight’s has announced the departure of coach Ben Cahn.

In the club’s 70th anniversary year it set out to reclaim its place at the top end of soccer in Victoria, and Cahn played no small part in this.

Finishing the National Premier League season in fourth place, Cahn led the Knights to an NPL Victoria semi Final, Dockerty Cup semi final, and Australia Cup semi final in which the club drew its largest attendance in a decade against Brisbane Roar at Knights Stadium last Sunday evening.

Whilst all at Somers Street would have liked to have seen Cahn remain for the 2024 season, health and family have taken priority.

“This decision hasn’t come lightly. It’s incredibly tough to walk away from what we’ve started to build this year but it’s an important time for many reasons for my family to be back home around our support network,” Cahn said.

“I’m very grateful to the club for grantingmetheprivilegeofleadingthe club in its 70th anniversary year.

I couldn’t be prouder of the staff and playing group who have come together and who have given everything consistently for 11 months to create something special, and I can’t thank the Melbourne Knights supporters and community enough for welcoming me, supporting the team this year and being there for us to share some amazing moments that will live with me forever.

time too, so although I think we’re definitely well placed for next year, we’ve got a good group and another 12 months of building, so does everyone else.

“So I definitely wouldn’t rule Laverton out, they’vebeenreallygreat, they’relikeus, they’ve come a long way from where they started.

“So I don’t think it’s going to be a walk in the park next year.

“It’ll definitely be a hard fought year, but [a premiership] is definitely the goal for next year

and we’ve definitely got the group that will be able to do it.”

Inotherresults,thedivision1bestandfairest was awarded to Spotswood’s Molly Althouse for her incredible season.

Althouse was a clear standout in the division polling 25 votes.

Parkside Spurs’ Rita Ceravolo and Werribee Centrals’ Jessica Spall tied for second place on 19 votes. While Caroline Springs’ Caitlin Pretty was fourth on 18 votes.

“I hope the momentum and togethernesswe’vebuiltasawholeclub this year will carry through and will be there to drive this genuine powerhouse of Australian football into the future.”

The club said they would like to thank Ben for his efforts this year and wish him the very best back home in Brisbane.

Devils ready to welcome women’s team

Keilor Park’s women’s side is returning for the 2024 season.

The Devils were a part of the Essendon District Football League’s inaugural women’s competition, however did not return after Covid.

Now the Devils are ready to make a return under the watch and guidance of coach Luke Baker.

Baker comes to the club with an experienced women’s coaching background, having spent five years as an assistant coach in the Western Region Football League.

During his time in the WRFL he contributed as an assistant coach to the establishment of two inaugural teams, Tarneit and Werribee Centrals, he made and won a final in his second year with Centrals, was a 2022 premiership assistant coach at Caroline Springs and 2023 grand finalists at the Lakers.

Now Baker is ready to take the reins of his own team.

“It’s a great opportunity overall,” he said.

“To get a women’s team back out there, obviously the women’s competition in every league is growing, I’ve been involved in coaching senior women for a while now so it’s something I’m passionate about.

“We’re looking to establish a strong women’s program… the whole club has put a lot of time and effort into getting the women’s

side up and going.

“So I’m very lucky and very happy to be here because they are giving me a lot of support.

“Getting numbers and getting interest is obviously the first and foremost key, you need a team on the park before you can start playing around with what you want to do.

“And then create a good bond between the girls and the club, the club’s already doing really well with the support and the men’s side is fully behind supporting the women’s which is great.”

While there is interest at the club from a variety of women, Baker’s message is clear for those who are wanting to try it out, even if they never had before.

“The main thing is, you can’t really comment on something until you try it, so always give it a go,” he said.

“You might be surprised at how much you actually love it.

“That’s what creates good club culture, and it helps with day to day life as well.

“Give it a crack, you never know. If it’s not for you, it’s not for everybody but you don’t know unless you give it a go.”

Spring Hills getting back on track

Spring Hills is determined to return to FV State League 4 west under new coach Sal Paglia.

Spring Hills only won three out of their 22 matches last season, finishing with a goal difference of negative 51.

The poor run of form had them finishing second last and heading into state 5 for the 2024 season, however with a new coach at the helm the club is hoping to turn it around in the not so distant future.

“I’m really, really excited to get going and get started,” Paglia said.

“It’s a vision that we’ve got over a two, three year plan, to bring these young, quality, Spring Hills kids that are coming through and see if we can expose them to senior football.”

Paglia will also be keeping a keen eye over the reserves and under 18’s programs at the

club to ensure that there will be a focus on youth development. Although he said that he will still be looking to recruit players into the club.

“It’ll be a blend of both, but the focus will be to get the foundations right and then build the blocks from there,” he said.

“It’s having a look at what Spring Hills has developed over the years and really just opening up a pathway for these young kids to come through.

“It’s not a short term plan, it’s a long term plan and hopefully by putting in some processes and a foundation that will give us the opportunity to have some success.”

Paglia said he understands that the journey won’t be an easy one, however if done right it will bear fruits in the years to come.

“Winning is very important, for us it’s

about building a good culture, and building the foundations,” he said.

“But my focus for 2024 will be making sure that we’ve got a team to be able to perform at thehighestlevel, andIthinkourperformances will take care of the results and where we want to be.

“I’m a coach that’s really driven to win and succeed and I think everything else will fall into place.

“It would be nice for us to get promoted but I think there are a lot of boxes that need to get ticked [first].

“We need to get our foundations right and performance is the next thing and then we’ll see where we sit half way through the year and then change it from there.”

Lions ready to bowl

Deer Park is ready to roll in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association season following a fantastic off season.

Coming off a senior division grand final in March, the Lions proved they are a destination club with the arrival of two Victorian Premier Cricket stars.

The Lions picked up Dean Russ and Dan Sartori in May.

Russ, who won the Ryder Medal in 2021-22, played more than 300 games for Footscray and captained its premiership team in 2013-14 and is one of premier cricket’s best ever players, being the 10th leading all-time run-scorer in VPC history with 9506 runs to his name.

Sartori, has played with Footscray in recent years, scoring 1800 runs with the club, after having made a name for himself at Richmond notching up over 5000 runs.

“We’re looking forward to it, hopefully we can go one better than we did last year,” Lions coach Mick Andriadis said.

“All in all, we’ve had a good pre-season, we

had a very good bonding trip to Shepparton for a pre-season game a few weeks ago.

“We’re ready to rock-and-roll in the first few rounds.”

Andriadis said the influence that Russ and Sartori has had on the group has been massive.

“The whole club’s excited to see them play,” he said. “They’ve been great so far with their professionalism so far.

“It’s good for the young ones around them.

“If you are a batsman you get the chance to learn off these two blokes who have been terrific district cricketers.”

Andriadis said these players will add needed batting depth and strength that will hold them in good stead come finals time.

“We got a bit lucky towards the end of last season, winning the last game outright and having a few games go our way,” he said.

“Then playing a good semi final against Haig [Fawkner].

“But we don’t want to be in that position, hopefully we’re in the finals all the way through the season so we don’t have to rely on luck, we make our own [luck].

“And hopefully go one better this year, that’s the main aim.”

On top of the marquee signings at the club, there are a few other players Andriadis is looking forward to seeing out on the park.

“I’m looking forward to seeing our Sri Lankan boys with another year together, I think they can offer a little bit more,” he said.

“They’ve been great in some games, and hopefully they can be a lot better in more games and make us stronger.

“Young Nicholas Xavier, it’ll be great to see him, I think he’s only 15, but he’s a year older, a year taller, stronger and more experienced now.

“He played a few games in the ones, he’ll take Lachlan Fitzgerald’s spot who moved onto Melbourne Uni.

“So, I think we’re in good shape.

“Now we’re just going to wait for the season to kick off and hopefully there’s no delays next week and we’re playing next week and can get stuck into it.”

Deer Park is scheduled to face Keilor next weekend, after round one was cancelled due to weather conditions.
